Why are there no more TV commercials for toddlers with disabilities?

The Shift in Representation: Why We See Fewer TV Commercials Featuring Toddlers with Disabilities
The landscape of television advertising, particularly for products aimed at children, has undergone significant changes over the past few decades. While commercials featuring toddlers with disabilities were once more prevalent, their presence has become less frequent. This shift reflects a broader societal evolution in representation and inclusivity. Let's explore some possible reasons behind this decline:
1. Moving Beyond Inspiration:
Shifting Focus: Early commercials featuring children with disabilities often leaned heavily on the "inspirational" narrative. The focus was on overcoming challenges, with the product playing a secondary role in aiding this triumph. This approach, while well-intentioned, could be seen as patronizing and fail to resonate with viewers who desired a more nuanced portrayal.
Authentic Representation: There's a growing emphasis on authentic representation in advertising. Audiences expect to see children with disabilities simply being children – playing, laughing, and enjoying their lives – instead of solely defined by their disability.
2. Targeting the "Real" Decision-Makers:
Parental Influence: Decisions about children's products are often made by parents or caregivers. Advertisers are increasingly targeting this demographic directly. Instead of focusing solely on the child's experience, commercials might highlight how the product benefits both the child and the caregiver, offering solutions to real-life challenges parents face.
Focus on Product Functionality: Modern commercials tend to take a more product-centric approach. The emphasis is on showcasing the features and benefits of the product in a clear and engaging way. This allows parents to assess how the product can specifically address their child's needs, regardless of ability.
3. The Rise of Social Media and Targeted Advertising:
Micro-Targeting: The rise of social media and targeted advertising allows companies to tailor messages to specific demographics. Instead of relying on mass-market television commercials, companies can reach niche audiences (including parents of children with disabilities) through online platforms and create more relevant, targeted messaging.
There are a few reasons why you might not see as many TV commercials featuring toddlers with disabilities:
Shifting Advertising Strategies: Advertising has moved heavily online, with targeted social media campaigns often replacing traditional TV commercials.
Focus on Authenticity: Modern marketing might favor featuring real families in their everyday moments, potentially showcasing disability in a more natural way.
Evolving Representation: The emphasis might have shifted towards inclusive casting across various media, where disability becomes a part of the character rather than the sole focus of the advertisement.

Influencer Marketing: Influencer marketing, where trusted individuals promote products online, has gained traction. Parents of children with disabilities might be sought out to showcase how a product works within their everyday lives, offering a more relatable and authentic perspective.
The Future of Representation:
Moving Towards Inclusion: The decline of commercials featuring toddlers with disabilities purely for "inspirational" purposes doesn't translate to a lack of inclusion. Instead, it signifies a shift towards more genuine and diverse portrayals.
Inclusion as the Norm: The goal is for inclusivity to become the norm, where children with disabilities are naturally represented in advertising alongside their peers without disabilities. This reflects the reality of classrooms, playgrounds, and families everywhere.
Ultimately, the advertising landscape continues to evolve. While television commercials featuring toddlers with disabilities might be less frequent, the broader conversation about representation and inclusivity remains ongoing. The goal is to create a world where all children see themselves reflected in the media they consume, celebrating individuality and the value of every member of society.

Wanda James is one of the most widely respected leaders in cannabis today. Her path to cannabis emerged when she moved to Colorado back in 2004. Wanda and her husband, Scott, became the first Black licensees in the United States to own a dispensary, grow operation, and edibles company when they opened their first dispensary in 2009. As a Black woman, a veteran, and a former Fortune 100 executive, she's spent the past decade working to remove the stigma of the plant and shedding light on the racial inequities of the cannabis industry. Whether it’s speaking out on the lack of Black ownership in cannabis, over-policing Black neighborhoods, or the mass incarceration that still exists for people of color, Wanda is a fierce advocate for those without a voice. #ChangingTheNarrative #WomensHistoryMonth https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpa_NySv0Or/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#selftalk Repost @scribesandvibes ・・・ #CHANGETHENARRATIVE... Speak less of who you were, Speak more of who you are. Think about the #plottwist. YOU GOT THIS! Your ability to articulate the divinity within will make you a star. Change the narrative. Change the narrative. Take the band-aids off, Open your heart and let the world see your scars. Speak of those #definingmoments, There's no shame in the pain. Tell the world, "The things that break you make you who you are." Change the narrative. Teach the boys and girls how the lowest moments in life have prepared you to reach for the stars. Teach the boys and girls how you acquired #emotionalintelligence from the grief of being #emotionallyscarred. Teach the boys and girls why everything you've been through has made you everything you are. #SPEAKLIFE. Plant seeds of wisdom in the youth, Help the boys and girls grow. Speak life. Teach the youth to live and let die, Preach the power of letting go. Speak life, even if it kills you to #speakyourtruth; You must know that everything you've been through has been preparing you for everywhere you must go. -Stevie #youarenotyourcircumstances #sonnet | #ChangingTheNarrative revisited ・・・ #vibewise: You are not defined by your circumstances. I really hate when I can't share these on IG 😩
The people who write the tests, the people who rate the schools, and the people who create curriculum are all colluding together to make more money off of the "lower-performing" schools.
The tests are one of the worst tools of oppression that the oppressors have created but nobody wants to start rallies about that.

What's REALLY going on in NYC?
NYC is pushing a narrative of a dramatic increase in Violent Crime, w/ a focus on Shooting Incidents. I can relate 2 the frustration of Mayor Adams & Police Commissioner Sewell. No One wants 2 live in a War Zone, or see Police Officers- especially Young Officers & Rookies getting shot & killed on the Streets they patrol. That said, We really need 2 look @ the role Bail Reform plays in this 'Spike'.
I thought that Bail Reform was supposed 2 B offered 2 'Non Violent Offenders', but many of these Assaults & Shooting Incidents involve individuals (many just Teenagers) that were arrested on Violent Crime Charges & released on bail. What's going on? 'Crimes of Convenience' normally rise during Times of Recession, & COVID has many in Economic Distress. Letting Violent Offenders 'Out on Bail' only seems 2 B emboldening these individuals 2 escalate. What do they really have 2 fear? Is it a coincidence that this 'Spike' began around the Time of the Chauvin Trial?
People took 2 The Streets demanding Police Reform, but now We only hear that more resources need 2 B put into 'Street Crime Units'. I remember Eric Adams as the Spokesman 4 '100 Blacks In Law Enforcement' speaking out against Police Violence, so i'm willing 2 see what The Mayor & Police Commissioner have in mind. That said, i'm Clear Eyed about 2 'Black' Leaders sending Police into Black Communities, using (updated) Tactics that remind Me of 'Guiliani Time'.
Could resources dedicated 2 Mental Health Outreach & keeping Violent Offenders off The Streets B a better use of City Funds? Is this 'Spike in Violent Crime' a distraction created 2 shift the narrative away from the spotlight on a National Epidemic of Black Men being wantonly shot & killed by Police Officers? The whole thing reminds me of the Early 90's, when Joe Biden & Hillary Clinton pushed a narrative of the (Black Male) Super Predator. Where's the concern over the 'Spike' in Young White Males committing Mass Shootings? What about stopping the 'Steel Pipeline' arming them?

When you know better but aren’t doing better First I must acknowledge, simply knowing and recognizing coping skills and behaviours within ourselves that no longer serve us and/or may be harmful to ourselves or the people around us, is the the most important step in this journey. You are at the planning stages. You are thinking about trying a different path. You may have even decided to take that different path but you end up on the old path. Don’t worry; someday you will take a step down that path. It may only be one step, at first. You may start down the old path, stop, run back and try the new path. All of this IS “doing better.” As we do in our children, we need to celebrate our small steps. We need to recognize that so much of the work is internal. Just knowing what to do differently does not stop you from old patterns. When it comes to parenting, many of these patterns are set in your own childhood. You may but even realize you have these patterns, until you become a parent. Often these patterns are also triggering for the parent, further fueling the emotional burden of parenting because when they see themselves doing exactly what they promised they would never do, their confidence and self-worth as a parent can simply plummet. Usually I realize I was overwhelmed in some way and validating my feelings of overwhelm, forgiving myself, giving myself grace and making a plan to meet some of those unmet needs, has transformed my perception of these moments where reaction was my initial response. I discuss this in detail in the Guide to Survival Mode Plans, now only 5$’s The link is in my bio @responsive_parenting #responsiveparenting #jmilburn #healingjourney #parentanger #parentmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #postpartummentalhealth #breakingcycles #intergenerationaltrauma #changingthenarrative #allthefeels #changeishard https://www.instagram.com/p/CWjwkkhr014/?utm_medium=tumblr

with the rise in working from home, online and ‘zoom’ fatigue is very real. it’s more important than ever to find new ways to tell stories that energise, engage and stimulate us. mental health is an issue in and of itself during this pandemic, so us storytellers must find ways to connect with audiences that takes them away from staring passively at a screen. challenge accepted!

Repost from @blackvoicesuncensored 💎💎💎💎 #BLACKLOVEISREAL #BLACKLOVE + #BLACKFAMILY = BLACK POWER YOU JUST HAVE TO BELIEVE IN BLACK LOVE AND WANT A BLACK FAMILY. THAT’S HOW WE BUILD BLACK POWER. IT’S OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TEACH THE NEXT GENERATION TO LOVE THEMSELVES AND EACH OTHER BY #LEADINGBYEXAMPLE . We know #BlackLoveIsReal and no matter how hard they try and tell us different we can not fall to their programing. I realize many of you would rather feed into negative stereotypes given to you by people who hate you, than to see the reality. STRONG #BLACKMEN AND STRONG #BLACKWOMEN DO LOVE EACH OTHER. Only we can change the narrative of how we see our own people. If you dont see it yourself maybe you should change what you are looking FOR and AT. I would rather show positive images of our people than to help them destroy the BLACK FAMILY. Pick a side because either you are fighting for Black People or you are not. #ChangingTheNarrative is up to us. We must love the person in the MIRROR(that mean loving yourself) FIRST. ✊🏾👊🏾👍🏾❤️💚🖤 #BLACKLOVEISREAL #KingsOurQueensNeedUsToBeKings #QueensYourKingsNeedYourSupport ❤️💚🖤 WE ARE THE #BLACKMEDIA SO WE MUST #CONTROLTHENARRATIVE becuase #ChangingTheNarrative IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY @wecontrolthenarrative #wecontrolthenarrative @Therealremyredd3 #Therealremyredd3 #Therealremyredd2 #therealremyredd https://www.instagram.com/p/Ces_YRYuOCe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
