Asian dramas and Love tropes

There are my favorite characters and their love stories as a list. Enemies to lovers

Drama: Her Royal Highness/长公主在上 Characters: Gu Xuanqing x Li Yunzhen Screentime: Main A boy is sent to be a servant in the unruly princess`s palace in order to find some dirt about her and to help his master to overthrown her, but something goes wrong... The HE is attached.

Drama: The Legends/招摇 Characters: Li Chenlan x Lu Zhaoyao Screentime: Main A leader of a demonic sect died trying to get demonic sword. Her soul returns to the world full of wish to get revenge on the current leader of her sect, who, as she thinks, killed her in the past. Found the way to be close to him, she learns that he wasn't the reason of her death and, moreover, desperately in love with her for many-many years. This is an adaptation of the novel "Ostentatious Zhaoyao", which I love more than a drama, but it's a good story in both variants. The HE is attached (although it`s a little bit obscure in the drama).

Drama: Till the End of the Moon/ 长月烬明 Characters: Tantai Jin x Li Susu Screentime: Main A boy who is destined to become a Demon God and to destroy the World tries to fight his doom. In a process, he falls in love with a transmigrator, who was sent 500 years back in the past to prevent his transformation into a Demon God. The irony is,making him falling in love is the only way to kill him for good... It`s an adaptation of the novel "Black Moonlight Holds the BE Script", which I like way-way-way more than the drama, not the least because the drama has BE and the novel has HE. I just watched it as a visually beautiful fanfic to the novel.

Drama: Love Between Fairy and Devil /苍兰诀 Characters: Dongfang Qingcang x Xiao Lanhua Screentime: Main My favorite drama of all times! Trying to save her love, a girl accidently falls into a secret prison for immortal criminals, revives the most fearsome demon of all times and heals his ability to feel. Later, forced to spend his time together with the girl from the enemy camp, the demon finds out that he actually likes her... The HE is attached. I wrote A LOT about them and made recap of the whole drama from the point of their relationship development in these posts: one, two, three, four, five and six.

Drama: My Journey to You /云之羽 Characters: Gong Shangjue x Shangguan Qian Screentime: Secondary In order to destroy the martial artist's clan, a female assassin was sent in there. While she is trying to seduce one of clan's young masters, he tries to expose her lies, but, eventually, falls in love with her. Unrequited. Maybe. This story has an open ending. My analysis of their relationship is here.

Drama: Butterflied lover /风月变 Characters: Ling Changjin x Bao Zhu Screentime: Secondary A wicked nobleman marries a princess because of her miraculous blood: it`s able to bring his zombie sister back to life. The princess allows him to treat her bad because she has been in love with him for a long time and believes he is a good person. Bit by bit he starts believe in it himself and begins to cherish his wife more... The ending is obscure (in a traditional Chinese way).

Drama: The Blue Whisper /与君初相识 Characters: Li Shu x Xue Sanyue Screentime: Minor A cat demon prince infiltrates the valley of demon hunters in order to set free the great demoness, but falls in love with one of demon hunters. Mutually. The ending is traditionally Chinese - they met again in another life. Т_Т

Drama: Immortal Samsara / 沉香如屑 Characters: Xuan Ye x Ran Qing Screentime: Minor An Asura king infiltrates the Heavenly Realm in order to steal the artifact that can help him conquering the world. The keeper of this artefact is a brave and honest goddess and he can't help but fall in love with her. After, he needs to choose: to be with his lover or to rule the world. He wants all at once, but there is no way to get it all. No HE for this pair. Pride and Prejudice

Drama: Lighter and Princess / 点燃我 Characters: Li Xun x Zhu Yun Screentime: Main A girl from a rich family with an anxious type of attachment falls in love with her classmate from a poor family with an avoidant type of attachment and tries to win his heart. It`s a problematic ship in a full meaning of these words and I like it this way. Yummy! The HE is attached.

Drama: Derailment /脱轨 Characters: Qi Lian x Jiang Xiaoyuan Screentime: Main A boy accidently meets his school sweetheart after many years of radio silence and understands that something is wrong with her. It turns out that her body is occupied by a transmigrator from a parallel world. At first he hates transmigrator for replacing his lover, but bit by bit he learns, that a transmigrator has not only the same appearance but the same habits and way of thinking, and falls in love with this new personality again... The story ends with HE but not in a way that you may think it would.

Drama: The Love by Hypnotic /明月照我心 Characters: Li Qian x Li Mingyue Screentime: Main In order to build relationship between two countries an emperor arranges marriage for his son. His fiancée is from a barbaric tribe: she is good at horse riding and archery, but knows nothing about palace etiquette and ladies stuff. It`s a light and sweet story about finding a path to each other's heart. The HE is attached.

Drama: The Long Ballad /长歌行 Characters: Hao Du x Li Leyan Screentime: Secondary A tsundere of a low background with a poker face does his ruthless job in a court, that's why a young princess thinks he is an awful man and is scared of him. But in reality he is a loyal servant and son and, moreover, secretly in love with the princess, who can't stand him... The HE is attached.

Drama: Miss the Dragon /遇龙 Characters: Xue Qianxun x Qingqing Screentime: Secondary A very naïve bird demon girl accidently meets a tsundere god of netherworld and turns his well ordered life into havoc. He starts liking it, though. The HE is attached. Forbidden love

Drama: A Frozen Flower /쌍화점 Characters: Hong Rim x No Guk Screentime: Main A gay king needs a heir, so he forces his lover to conceive a child with a queen. In a process, a boy, who was groomed as a king's lover from his childhood, finds out that he likes women much more than men. A traditional Korean tragedy. Very beautiful and full of feelings, though. (No GIFs because they all would be erotic ones).

Drama: 100 Days My Prince /백일의 낭군님 Characters: Moo-yeon x Kim So-hye Screentime: Secondary An assassin who is working for a wicked court official is secretly in love with a wife of a crown prince, who happens to be a daughter of the killer of his parents. Forbidden love doubles! But it's mutual, unfortunately for him. It's a very beautiful and full of desperation and feelings story. No HE, we die like Koreans. More detailed story of their relationship is available here, here and here.

Drama: The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity/晴雅集 Characters: He Shouye x Zhang Ping Screentime: Secondary A woman, who is destined to restrain the undying evil within her body for eternity in solitude, falls in love with Yin-Yang master. Her love is mutual, but her lover can't be with her forever, so he leaves with her his guardian demon to brighten her loneliness. Protecting her for ever starts being the only goal of demon's life... A tragedy, but a beautiful one.

Drama: The Legends/招摇 Characters: Gu Hanguang x Shen Qianjin Screentime: Minor "The Legends" once more! The main doctor of a demonic sect is in love with a leader of a righteous sect. A girl is not allowed to love anyone, otherwise she will suffer from the poison, so he anonymously sends her packages of medicinal herbs. She is curious about anonymous sender, too. But nothing can be kept in secret forever... Unfortunately, no HE for these two. In the novel he is safe and sound, but he has no love plotline at all. So is a price of love Т_Т.

Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!

This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Miss The Dragon Thoughts

Miss the Dragon is a 2021 Mainland Chinese drama. The drama is based on a video game, is thirty-six episodes, and stars: Dylan Wang, Bambi Zhu, Deng Wei, Pan Mei Ye, and Zhu Zan Jin.

The drama tells the story of Liu Ying (later Yuan A Yu in her second life, Feng Chen Yue in her third life, and Gu Qing Yan in her final life) who saves a thousand-year-old dragon demon called Yuchi Longyan. To repay her debt, Yuchi Longyan promises to marry Liu Ying. However, things get messy due to Liu Ying having a special soul and Longyan having to save Liu Ying’s friend’s soul. So, Longyan erases Liu Ying’s memories and has her marry someone else. Longyan than vows to follow Liu Ying through all her lives, with the goal of marrying her in her final life (when she’ll have strengthen her soul enough to become an immortal). Each life takes place over 10 or so episodes.

More thoughts below:

The Cast:

1. Dylan Wang is a very handsome young man. He’s only 22. He was also a flight attendant and a spokesperson/model before becoming an actor. He seems like a complete sweetheart in his behind the scenes videos and his costars speak very highly of him. As of this drama, he has been the lead in three other dramas. So, I’m not completely blaming him for his rough talents. To be honest, after Meteor Garden someone should have put him in supporting/second main roles for a few years so he can work on his acting skills.Instead of putting him in drama after drama (usually with older actresses/actors who are usually better actors) then he is. Because, Dylan has only a handful of expressions/emotions in his acting: angry/jealous, cute/bashful, emotionless, and annoyed. All that aside, he did do a good job (for the most part) as the awkward Longyan who is willing to do anything and everything to protect the woma(e)n he loves.

2. Bambi Zhu is a very pretty young lady and has been in the business for about six years. Is she the most talented actress out there? No. But, she does a very good job of playing her four characters:Liu Ying is sweet, confused, and loving. A’Yu is playful and cares about the people around her, Chen Yue (who Bambi plays the best) is a general who lives for the fight, and Qing Yan is sweet and innocent. Bambi seems to do her best work in fantasy or historical dramas.

3. Deng Wei needs to get a lead role soon. How is this his first drama? He played the role of the coldhearted/I-hate-everyone-but-you role of Xue Qian Xun perfectly. I cannot say more, but Deng Wei is talented and I just really hope some producer or director was watching his preformance carefully. He really did out act the leads in several scenes.

4. Pan Mei Ye needs to get more lead roles. It is terrible that she’s been in the business for five years and has only had two leading roles. She owns the role of QingQing and brings a lightness and freshness to the drama. Her chemistry with everyone is amazing and you can just tell she’s having a great time playing her playful character.

5.Zhu Zan Jin is an actor that has made a career out of playing supporting roles in fantasy and historical dramas. He is always popping up in something and he always gives a solid performance. He was campy at times (especially toward the end),but he did well with what he was given.

The Characters/Romances:

1. With Longyan and Liu Ying, you get a very sweet, playful, and innocent love story. The angst appears when Longyan is forced to marry someone else (he doesn’t really marry someone else, but he does marry her. It’s complicated), so he erases Liu Ying’s memories of him and replaces them with memories of a government employee. Longyan then vows to spend his life protecting Liu Ying. In a way, Liu Ying is Longyan’s first love and he judges all others by her.

2. With Longyan and A’Yu, you still get a very innocent/first love situation. Longyan goes to A’Yu as QingQing’s brother (he has QingQing befriend A’Yu to watch over her, and QingQing is willing as Liu Ying saved her) and the two actually have a short but very sweet romance. A’Yu finds out he is a demon, and is still willing to be with him. Sadly, Longyan’s power is too weak (from protecting Liu Ying) and he is taking her mortal energy, which is slowly killing her. To make up for it, Longyan goes against the Heavens (he does that a lot) to help A’Yu become the “Divine Lady” who stops a drought. A’Yu is married to the Emperor and ends up having a very lonely life. BUT, when she dies and goes to the afterlife (Longyan is always waiting for her there, as she always regains her past lifes memories when she sees him in the afterlife), A’Yu fakes drinking the tea that will make her forever her life as A’Yu.

3. Chen Yue and Longyan have a different relationship then the last two lifes. Chen Yue has memories of him (even if they are fuzzy) and Longyan pretends to be a mortal solider in her army. They spend years together - with Chen Yue knowing who he is, Longyan pretending that he’s not who he is, and the two of them just being happy to be near one another. This relationship is probably the most mature with the two almost being on equal footing. It is also in this life (or afterlife) that Longyan takes Chen Yue to his home and tries to marry her - but, they are stopped by the Immortal of Fate, who reminds Longyan that Chen Yue has one more life to live, before she is strong enough to become an immortal.

4. Qing Yan and Longyan probably have the shortest time together, but Qing Yan is also the most like Liu Yang. Longyan actually approaches Qing Yan when she is a child, hoping that will make their future meeting easier for her to understand. So, Qing Yan spends 13 years secretly hoping to meet Longyan again. I wouldn’t say Longyan is in love with Qing Yan more than any of her other lives, but it is in this life where he is willing to go the hardest - going against God, Immortals, and even friends to be with Qing Yan.

5.QingQing and Xue Qian Xun are a better couple than the lead couple. There, I said it. They have an angsty past (that neither can remember), he’s only nice to her (but she thinks he’s teasing her), he’s extremely protective and possessive, she’s sweet and (unknowingly) flirty. They both just want the other to be happy - and they are willing to hurt themselves (or even kill themselves) to make sure the other is happy and well taken care of. I love them so much.

The Story:

1. As this is based on a video game, there isn’t really a story. There is something about Liu Ying’s soul being needed to stop demons (that are locked up) from breaking free, but considering that Liu Ying is allowed to reincarnate three times over a period of 200+ years...I guess they weren’t in a huge hurry, as the Heavens were able to keep stopping the demons from freeing themselves. Each of Ling Ying’s lives has a “villain” that Longyan helps her defeat (even if she doesn’t know it) and Longyan falls more in love while Liu Ying is pretty sure she knew Longyan before (and had moments with him), but cannot quite remember them.

2. The story of Xue Qian Xun and QingQing was very sweet and sad, due to their past together. I liked their ending, but I don’t want to say too much on it.

3. Longyan and Qing Yan have an ending that some people will like and some with hate. Personally, I didn’t really care for it. Because, while they are together forever, they aren’t really together in the way I had spent 36 episodes wanting them to be together.

Final Thoughts:

1. I’m not walking away from this drama planning to watch it again. I may rewatch clips (probably of QingQing and Qian Xun)on Youtube, though. It was a good drama and I did binge it over four days, but it isn’t something I’m likely to remember in a year.

2. If you are a fan of anyone in the drama or Chinese Xianxia dramas, check this out. If you aren’t - I’d skip it.

Love Triangles

I was thinking the other day, about what determines the second male/female and what determines the main male/female lead. And then I was thinking about which romantic dramas don’t involve love triangles and I... couldn’t think of any. So today I will analyze one, love triangle tropes, and two why dramas always include love triangles.

The love triangle in A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好)

Types of Love Triangles

There are three main types of love triangles:

A - when the male/female lead has loved both persons in the love triangle

B - when both members of the love triangle have their moments with the male/female lead

C - when its obvious that one member of the love triangle is seen only as a “friend” or “sister” or “brother” (aka has no chance)

Some dramas feature love triangle B and love triangle C at the same time, here are some examples:

Love triangle B: Xu Feng (旭凤) - Jin Mi (锦觅) - Run Yu (润玉）

As you can see through these seven shows, commonly the main love triangle is composed of two guys one girl, while the secondary “love triangle C” is composed of two girls and one guy.

The love triangle in Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (倚天屠龙记) and one of the few love triangles not to follow the two guys fighting for one girl triangle.

Characteristics of Love Triangles

Almost always, the two members vying for the affection in the triangle are foils to each other. Examples:

A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好)

Jiang Chen (江辰) - mature, cold and extremely smart

Wu Bosong (吴柏松) - careless, kind and bad grades

Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)

Xu Feng (旭凤) - arrogant and proud

Run Yu (润玉) - quiet and calm

Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (倚天屠龙记)

Zhao Min (赵敏) - clever, manipulative

Zhou Zhiruo (周芷若) - “innocent, selfless” (I mean she technically is worse than Zhao Min, but that’s not the mask she puts on)

In school dramas you typically have the smart guy and the dumb girl pairing that eventually wins out:

A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好)

Jiang Chen (江辰) and Chen Xiaoxi (陈晓希)

When We Were Young (人不彪悍枉少年)

Hua Biao (花彪) and Yang Xi (杨夕)

With You (最好的我们)

Often there’s also the “childhood friend” aspect, and while that particular trope usually looses out there are some exceptions:

When We Were Young (人不彪悍枉少年) - Li Yu (李漁) - second lead

Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber (倚天屠龙记) - Zhou Zhiruo (周芷若） - second lead

In some dramas, almost any male character that appears is in love with the female lead:

The male leads in Startling With Each Step/Scarlet Heart were lucky! They all got something with the female lead:

Male lead: Yin Zhen (胤禛) - is the true love/soulmate

Second male lead: Yin Si (胤禩) - gets her love in the first half

Third male lead: Yin Ti (胤禵) - gets to marry her

So What Differentiates the First and Second Male Leads?

The love triangle in Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - can you guess (if you’ve never watched this show) who the winning couple is?

Typically the female lead just likes one of them and you can’t really give a reason for why the first male lead is better than the second one. However, some dramas do a good job of creating a jerk second male lead that makes the decision sufficiently easier for our female lead:

Princess Agents (楚乔传)

Second male lead Yan Xun (燕洵) kind of goes insane after his entire family is slaughtered and becomes obsessed over revenge. He looses all the qualities our female lead fell in love with him for.

Put Your Head on My Shoulder (致我们暖暖的小时光)

Second male lead Fu Pei (傅沛) is a literal jerk. He takes our female lead’s love for granted and constantly abandons her when she needs help.

Bloody Romance (媚者无疆)

Second male lead Gong Zi (公子) treats people like chess pieces instead of real humans, and is willing to kill or manipulate anyone. Our female lead, being kind and unwilling to kill anyone, obviously would never fall for him.

My Little Princess (亲爱的，公主病)

Second male lead Zheng Chuyao (郑楚曜) is childish and immature. He is unwilling to confess his love for the female lead and constantly embarrasses her instead.

However, in most other cases, there is never a clear difference between who wins out in a love triangle. One similarity most share is that the first one to speak with the female lead wins out:

Usually, the second male lead is the type of person who will forever watch over the female lead, caring for them are a subtle way. They are kinder, calmer, and perhaps more down to earth and human:

A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Wu Bosong (吴柏松)

Meteor Garden (流星花园) - Hua Zelei (花泽类)

Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Gu Jian (顾剑)

Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) - Run Yu (润玉)

With second female leads, the similarities are rather obvious. They think they “deserve” the love of the male lead because they either grew up together or they have the same social standing:

Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Zhao Sese (赵瑟瑟）

Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) - Sui He (穗禾)

Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传) - Baili Mingxiang (百里茗香)

Boss and Me (杉杉来了) - Yuan Lishu (元丽抒)

While the male lead often sees his excess admirers as “sisters” the female lead simply friend zones them.

Often, the male lead is also somewhat of a foil to the female lead:

Boss and Me (杉杉来了)

Xue Shanshan (薛杉杉) is innocent, a little stupid and cute

Feng Teng (封腾) is mature, intelligent and cold

Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)

Jin Mi (锦觅) is unaware of love and a little stupid

Xu Feng (旭凤) is fully aware of his feelings and smarter

Goodbye My Princess (东宫)

Qu Xiaofeng (曲小枫) is innocent, kind and longs to go home

Li Chengyin (李承鄞) is cold, cruel and willing to do anything to keep Xiaofeng by his side

If you really just want to tell who’s the male lead, I’ll tell you an easy way to find out: he’s going to be played by the guy who’s more famous.

The love triangle in Startling With Each Step (步步惊心) - can you guess who’s the first, second, and third male leads are?

So Why do Dramas Love Love Triangles?

Not to say TV shows have lazy writing or anything, but I feel like love triangles are an easy way to make both male and female leads realize their feelings. For instance, in Boss and Me, when our female lead (Shan Shan), sees our male lead (Feng Teng) dancing with another girl, she gets jealous. That makes her realize her feelings. Love triangles can also stretch out a TV show longer. A show that might only have 24 episodes can probably be stretched to more than 30 just due to love triangles.

On a level of characterization, when a character has many admirers, we, as watchers, can infer various things about them. Either they are one, amazingly beautiful or successful, or two, amazingly unique. For example, Chu Qiao in Princess Agents is strong and intelligent and for that reason, almost every guy she comes in contact with falls head over heels for her. This can show you that she is one of a kind in this world. Very few women in Princess Agents are as straightforward of their power, and so she really is unique. Xiaofeng in Goodbye My Princess has admirers because she is kind, innocent and selfless. Her bright and cheerful personality contrasts heavily with the political and dark atmosphere of the palace. So, when a character is entangled in many love triangles, you can infer there’s something special about them, and use that hypothesis to further infer something about the world in which the television show takes place.

Love triangles can also lead to more character development. In trying to get girl (or very rarely guy), the admirers must rise to become a better version of themselves. For example, in Meteor Garden, Daoming Si goes from being bratty and immature to being (relatively more) mature and understanding. In A Love So Beautiful, Jiang Chen goes from being a guy that’s cold and pushes people away to a guy who is more open about his feelings and love.

So, while in some shows, love triangles exist purely to elongate the show, in other shows we can use love triangles as a way to investigate the society we are plunged into at the start of the show.

Notes:

Would you say Go Go Squid (亲爱的, 热爱的) has a love triangle. That weird press lady likes the male lead, but she has like four scenes in total.

Here’s another thought I had about love: the ability of a character to admit their feelings often reflects upon how they’ve lived up til that point. Characters that do not understand their feelings could either have grown up isolated, never been in a relationship or have been fed a pill by their mother that takes away their ability to love. Characters who confess more easily were probably raised with loving parents in a loving household with loving friends surrounding them. Characters that understand their feelings at once know themselves well, and they can understand love. They either were raised in a loving family, or have been in love before. Love is a strange concept, sometimes we can’t handle it, and a lot of times we can’t understand it. TV shows feature humans (or at least things that look like humans) and so they deal with that aforementioned problem too.
