RIAA kills youtube-dl

In 1998, Bill Clinton signed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act into law. At the time, most of the attention was on Section 512 - AKA "notice and takedown," which absolves platforms from liability for users' infringement provided they respond quickly to removal demands.

Over the years, this has been horrifically abused, with everyone from post-Soviet dictators to sexual predators to cults and literal Nazis using spurious copyright claims to censor their critics, often without consequence.

But the real ticking time-bomb in the DMCA is Section 1201, the "anti-circumvention" rule, which makes it a felony (punishing by a 5-year prison sentence and a $500k fine) to help people tamper with "access controls" that restrict copyrighted works.

This rule means that if a company designs its products so that you have to remove DRM to use them in legal ways, those uses become felonies. DMCA 1201 is how Apple and John Deere make it a felony for anyone except them to fix their products.

They just design their devices so that after the repair is complete, you need an unlock code to get the system to recognize new parts. Bypassing the unlock code defeats an "access control" and is thus a literal crime.

But there's no copyright infringement here! Swapping a new part into a phone, a tractor or a ventilator is not a copyright infringement. And yet, it is still a (criminal) copyright VIOLATION. DMCA 1201 lets companies felonize ANY conduct that is adverse to their shareholders.

It's "felony contempt of business model" and you can go to prison for it.

Thing is, it would be easy to fix this law. If you thought that DRM deserved its own legal protection, you could get there just by adding "this only applies when copyright infringement takes place."

But from the very first days, it was clear that DMCA1201 was NOT about preventing copyright infringement, it was about enforcing business models. The first users of this law were DVD manufacturers who wanted to stop the public from "de-regionalizing" their DVD players.

The manufacturers and studios had cooked up a racket where they would sell DVDs at different prices in different countries, and they didn't want Americans shopping for cheap DVDs in India.

But going into a store in Mumbai and paying the asking price for a licensed DVD and watching it in NYC is NOT infringement. It is how copyright is supposed to work: a rightsholder names a price, an audience member pays it, then they get to enjoy the work they've bought.

Likewise the early consoles that also took advantage of DMCA 1201. If you own a Sega Dreamcast and I write a game for your Sega Dreamcast and sell it to you, we are doing copyright right: a creator and an audience member exchanging creative works for money.

But Sega - and the App Store businesses it spawned up to and including Apple - used DMCA 1201 to make it a felony for creators to sell their works to audiences without cutting the device manufacturer in for a commission.

Now that everything has software in it, DMCA 1201 can be brought to bear on an ever-widening constellation of devices, from medical implants to kitchen appliances, from printer ink to insulin pumps.

When the Napster Wars began, the RIAA represented the Big Six record labels. Today, it represents the Big THREE labels, as an entire realm of human endeavor stretching back to a time before language itself is now the near-exclusive purview of three giant corporations.

They are tightening the noose. Yesterday, the RIAA sent a DMCA 1201 takedown notice to Github demanding the removal of youtube-dl, a venerable and popular tool for format-shifting Youtube videos.

As Parker Higgins documents in a brilliant, scathing thread, the complaint is a masterwork of legal shenanigans, claiming that because someone COULD infringe an RIAA member's copyright by saving a Youtube video, Github MUST remove tools that permit this.

The RIAA's lawyers don't mention the millions of hours of public domain Youtube videos that archivists have preserved using youtube-dl, nor the Creative Commons licensed videos that are unambiguously lawful to download with youtube-dl.

Nor do they mentions the limitations to copyright that sometimes make it lawful to download ANY video from Youtube.

DMCA 1201 isn't just a charter to transform your commercial desires into legal obligations, it is also a powerful censorship tool.

I started this essay talking about DMCA 512, the "notice and takedown" rule. That says that if you believe your copyright is being infringed, you can fire off a notice to the host and demand its immediate removal. If they comply, you can sue their user, but not them.

In 1998, Congress recognized that this was ripe for abuse, and created a "counternotice": if your material is taken down and you think you are in the right, you can counternotify the host and they can put your stuff back up, again, without being liable if you're wrong.

If the rightsholder complains again, the host either removes the content (the rightsholder and user can go to court), or they can leave it up if they think the complaint is BS. This system has been wildly inadequate at protecting legit speech, but it's better than nothing.

And "nothing" is what you get under 1201. When the RIAA complains about youtube-dl to Github, Github pulls it down, but if the developers counternotify them, Github can't restore the files without facing CRIMINAL liability (5 years/$500k).

Copyright trolls have long figured this out: DMCA 1201 is a superweapon for getting content removed from Google and elsewhere: if you assert that someone who recorded you doing something abusive is violating 1201, that video goes down and STAYS down, with no counternotice.

DMCA 1201 is a goddamned dumpster fire, a surefire recipe for techno-corporate dystopia. EFF is suing to overturn it. That trial can't come fast enough:

The app lets you grant temporary permissions to applications. So, for instance, you can let Facebook access your location long enough to check into a place, and Bouncer disables the permission once you leave Facebook. This is a great way to use all of the features of a social media app without digging into your settings to disable those permissions or giving those apps permanent access to your information. The app runs for $0.99 and should work on most (if not all) apps. It’s rumored that this could be an Android Q feature. If that’s true, then even Google really likes this app.

You can, of course, buy more if needed. What makes Google Drive so special are the suite of Android apps that are attached to it. They include Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Photos, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Keep. Between the office apps, the Photos app (which allows unlimited photo and video backup), and Keep for note taking, you have apps for practically anything you need to do in terms of productivity. Some of the features of these apps include live collaboration, deep sharing features, and compatibility with Microsoft Office documents. Microsoft Office has a similar setup with OneDrive and Office. That makes them a great alternative for Google Drive. However, Google’s solution is just easier to use.

Google Maps and WazePrice: FreeDOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAYGoogle Maps virtually owns the navigation apps scene and it remains of the best Android apps ever. It gets frequent, almost weekly updates that seem to only add to its incredibly generous list of existing features. Google Assistant / Google Feed / Google SearchPrice: FreeDOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAYThis is one seriously powerful app. It also works on most Android devices. You simply download the app and then enable it. From there, you can ask it whatever you want. It also supports a variety of commands. You can control lights, ask about population control, and it can even do simple math problems for you. There are a variety of products like Google, Bose QC II Bluetooth headphones, Home and Chromecast that extent the functionality even further. There is also a second Google Assistant app for those who want a quick launch icon on the home screen. The hardware stuff costs money, but Google Assistant is free. Amazon Alexa is another excellent app in this space, but it doesn’t support Google Android quite as much as we would like, yet.

There’s more content there than a human person can watch in several lifetimes. That includes music videos, educational videos, news videos, reviews, video game let’s plays, and a whole lot more. YouTube Music is also now a thing. However, it’s not quite as good as Google Play Music yet. We expect the service to improve dramatically over the next year. They are the best music and video streaming package on mobile as long as they remain tied together. Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal are also great music streaming services, especially if you want better sounding music.

LastPass Password ManagerPrice: Free / $12 per yearDOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAYLastPass is one of those must-have Android apps. It’s a password manager that lets you save your login credentials in a safe, secure way. On top of that, it can help generate nearly impossible passwords for you to use on your accounts. It’s all controlled with a master password. It has cross-platform support so you can use it on computers, mobile devices, tablets, or whatever. There are others, but LastPass always feels like it’s one step ahead. Additionally, the premium version is cheap. You can also grab LastPass Authenticator to go along with it for added security. There are other great options like 1Password, Dashlane, KeepassDroid, and others that are just about as good. However, LastPass feels a little more friendly and secure (usually), especially with its extra authenticator app.

Nova LauncherPrice: Free / $4.99DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAYInitially, we weren’t going to put any launchers on this list. Nova Launcher seems to be extend beyond what normal launchers are. It’s been around for years, it’s been consistently updated, and thus it’s never not been a great option for a launcher replacement. It comes with a host of features, including the ability to backup and restore your home screen set ups, icon theming for all of your Android apps, tons of customization elements for the home screen and app drawer, and more. You can even make it look like the Pixel Launcher if you want to. If you go premium, you can tack on gesture controls, unread count badges for apps, and icon swipe actions. Those looking for something simpler may want to try Lawnchair Launcher, Hyperion Launcher, and Rootless Launcher as well.

Pocket CastsPrice: $3.99DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAYThose who enjoy podcasts probably have the easiest decision in regards to which podcast app that should use. Android Messages is a little more basic but it’s simple and it gets the job done. Both of these apps also offer SMS messaging from your desktop. Pulse charges either a monthly subscription or a single $10.99 charge while Android Messages is free. Pulse SMS uses a server structure while Android Messages live streams your messages. Both methods have their pros and cons, but they’re both still excellent options. These are the SMS apps we’d recommend to everybody. Those who don’t care about texting from a computer can still use these and people seem to like Textra a lot as well.

Other features include a dedicated number row, SwiftKey Flow which allows for gesture typing, multiple language support, cross-device syncing of your library and much more. It’s about as good as it gets in the keyboard space. It’s true that Microsoft now owns SwiftKey, but so far they have managed not to mess it up. Gboard, Google’s keyboard app, is also exceptionally good and is an excruciatingly close second place here.

Tasker and IFTTTPrice: $2.99DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAYTasker is a glorious application if you have the patience to learn how to use the app. What it does is allow users to create custom made commands and then use them in various places. There are many apps out there that have Tasker support and you can even use Tasker to create very complex commands for NFC tags. It’s difficult to truly explain what this app can do because it can do so many things. Between the apps supported, plugins you an add, and the sheer volume of stuff that you can do, there aren’t many apps out there as useful as this one. IFTTT is another excellent automation app. In some cases, it may even be better than Tasker thanks to its simplicity and wide range of uses.

TickTickPrice: Free / $27.99 per yearDOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAYTickTick isn’t as popular as other to-do list apps. However, it may be the best one. It covers the basics like recurring tasks, reminders, push notifications, various organizational features, and categories. The app also lets you share tasks and entire categories with other people. This makes it great for family use, small teams at work, or other such groups. It’s also great for stuff like grocery lists. The to-do list app is full of excellent choices, like Todoist, gTasks, and Ike along with more professional options like Asana, Trello, and others. However, TickTick just seems to strike that perfect balance of functional while still being easy to use and all of its most important features are free. Todoist is perhaps the most fashionable option because it’s a lot flashier. However, it hides all reminders behind a paywall and TickTick doesn’t. Sorry, Todoist!

It’s not 100% perfect. It does have the occasional bug and some irritating advertisements. Zedge Premium is a new initiative to provide premium content at a reasonable price. You watch ads or fill out surveys to earn Zedge credits. You can buy them as well with in-app purchases. It’s a good way to support the developer and the artists. The Realme 8 impressed us with its long battery life and fast charging. It also packs a very nice Super AMOLED screen and a capable Helio G95 chip, which does well for games. It offers speedy charging, NFC, a 3.5mm jack, a dedicated MicroSD slot, and even FM radio.

Its camera setup can pack four shooters, but the photo quality for main and ultrawide shooters was indifferent. Videos turned out good, however, selfies too.

The Realme 8 isn't the best phone, but it's cheap, it passed our battery life test, and it offers more than enough for its price.

4. Samsung Galaxy A12 - Best Long Battery Life Phone

If battery life comes first, the €150 Samsung Galaxy A12 is a very affordable smartphone. It has a large screen with a small notch which is ideal for watching videos. The quad camera at the back is also good.

Does not affect the phone performance; Its screen is just 720p and with washed-out colors. However, the Android 11 OS and One UI are still quite fast.

So, the Galaxy A12 is for those of you who are on a limited budget and prioritize battery life above everything else. If it isn't, we should probably look elsewhere.

Ok I'm bored so imma rate sims packs by how much I actually use them in gameplay

(excluding most stuffpacks, snowy retreat and cottage living, the decorate game pack, any kits, and the star wars game pack

Eco living 5/10

To be honest the whole neighborhood vote system got annoying very quickly, after turning it off I ended up ressetinf worlds bc no matter where I went npc sims kept getting in my house and stealing stuff bc of the 'everyones property" thing (that I didn't even vote to get)

However I do sometimes use the solar panels and the rain collector to save money. And the phone calls (especially the challenges with wills) can be entertaining sometimes

-university pack 7/10

I don't do it much, but I like revisiting the university gameplay sometimes. It's pretty time-consuming to do, and the clubs can be nice to participate in

(also the bed that comes with this pack is perfect to have ur sims not be constantly tired bc it's cheap and has 8 energy refill)

Two brands in particular have really nailed impressive specs for a small price. Motorola prides itself on value for money, with even its highest-spec handsets failing to break the £400 mark. And while Samsung is best known for its premium Galaxy S and Galaxy Note ranges, it also has several phones for those on tighter budgets in its reasonably priced A series. Read on to find out more about each brand’s latest budget handsets. Motorola and Samsung phones under £150

Let’s start with the truly budget phones. Motorola has more choice if £150 is your absolute limit, but there are some inexpensive offerings from Samsung too. If you pick a phone this cheap, expect slower processors, lower-resolution displays and pared-back cameras. It’s not all bad, though: some phones at this price point outperform premium handsets for battery life. Below we’ve pitted two of the brands’ cheapest phones against each other to see which, on paper, is the better bet. Motorola Moto G10 – £130

At first glance, we’re impressed with what Motorola’s offering for the money. It comes with four rear cameras, 64GB of storage (32GB is more common at this price) and, helpfully, an IP52 rating. Spending a little more on the Moto G30 (£160) gets you a higher-spec camera, better processor and more internal storage. This is about as cheap as it gets if you want a big name on a budget. Don’t expect fancy features though, as this Galaxy is pretty stripped back. It has 32GB of storage (although this can be extended), three rear and one selfie camera, and just a face scanner for unlocking the phone. Samsung claims it’s kitted out this phone with ‘streamlined design aesthetics’, and it does have an impressive screen-to-body ratio for a budget phone, with just a small notch for the front camera, like the Moto G10. You can forgive the lack of add-ons if it’s a great phone, so check how well this phone fared in our tests in our Samsung Galaxy A02s review. Verdict There’s a lot these phones have in common, from their 6.5-inch low-resolution LCD screens, large 5,000mAh batteries and NFC for making contactless payments – a feature you can’t take for granted when your budget is this low. However, the Motorola has more processing power (4GB of Ram vs Samsung’s 3GB), runs off the latest Android version (the A02s is lagging behind on Android 10) and its four rear cameras offer more versatility than the Samsung’s three. Where the Samsung edges it is on software updates. It benefits from four years of manufacturer security patches from the date of launch, which means you can keep the phone running safely for much longer than the Motorola, which is due to stop receiving support in 21 months. You get 64GB of storage (although this is extendable), and four cameras in total, including a 48Mp wide-lens main camera on the back, and a 25Mp selfie camera. Verdict These Android 10 phones both have the same amount of Ram (4GB), but their strengths lie in different areas. We’ve come to expect big screens from Motorola, so the 6.7-inch display on this phone should come as no surprise. One of Samsung’s cheapest 5G smartphones, the A32 comes with 64GB of extendable storage, a large LCD screen (6.5 inches) and battery (5,000mAh). The MediaTek Dimensity 720 processor has performed fairly well our tests before, and with 4GB of Ram it should be able to cope with most of your multitasking. It has exactly the same rear camera setup as the Motorola Moto G 5G plus, but one less selfie camera, with just a 13Mp wide lens on the front. Verdict It’s great to see 4K video recording on both these phones (a step up from the cheaper handsets) and, of course, 5G compatibility. The Samsung comes equipped with Android 11 and it benefits from a long update policy, so you’ll be able to own it safely for longer. However, if you’re after the best phone for now, it’s hard to argue with the Motorola’s much higher display resolution, extra 2GB of Ram and additional selfie camera. Winner: Motorola

Why it’s important to consider mobile phone security
