My thoughts on the Cat Pack

So this is something I've been wanting to talk about for a while now. I'm sure the reason we all love PAW Patrol is because of the adorable pups. But honestly, I'm actually AFRAID of most dogs in real life...they're too loud, energetic and unpredictable...so I've always been more of a cat person due to their more relaxed nature, which makes it really tiring to see the overused trope of "dogs good, cats bad" in media of any kind. Don't lump me in with Mayor Humdinger though, I don't hate dogs...quite the opposite actually, I do really love dogs! I'm a big fan of huskies in particular (which is ironic considering they're the mascot for a major university in my state, so they're well loved by a lot of people here), they are BEAUTIFUL and my therapist has one that she used to bring to her office before everything went virtual, and I LOVED him! He was so calm, quiet, and gentle (which I know is uncharacteristic of huskies), and very very soft and fluffy, with a beautiful reddish brown coat and blue eyes, his name is Rory but we always called him a "gentle giant"...this is pretty close to what he looks like btw.

So I don't hate dogs by ANY means, and if I ever saw one being abandoned or mistreated, I wouldn't be able to stop myself from helping it, just like I would if I saw a cat in the same situation (I really do love animals and find them easier to feel empathy for than people, those humane society commercials on TV always cause me strong empathic distress and make me wanna adopt all those poor pets and give them a better life...seriously why are people so mean...? It's not okay...). I'm just afraid of them most of the time...I'm usually fine around calm ones, it's just the energetic ones that I get anxious around. So when Wild was introduced into the PAW Patrol in season 7's Moto Pups subseries as the first cat member, I thought it was a breath of fresh air that there was now a cat character that wasn't a villain (yes I know Cali isn't a villain but she doesn't do much either way). Wild took the spot of my favorite subseries character because of that fact...and also, he's a stunt cyclist, and motorcycles are cool (they're too loud for me personally but I love watching them on TV)! I was honestly really sad to see Moto Pups go because it meant Wild wouldn't be in the show anymore...but then the Cat Pack happened, introducing three more cats that Wild himself made into their own team to help the PAW Patrol! I was really happy to see more good cat characters, and the Cat Pack's gear and vehicles are honestly really cool. It's also really cute how they each look up to a different big cat and have the skills of their respective big cat as their "Cat Pack power" and vehicles designed after them as well (Wild - cheetah, Rory - white tiger, Leo - lion, and Shade - jaguar). I have Wild's cheetah-cycle and it's so much fun to yell "Cheetah speed!" when playing with it, and I hope to collect Rory, Leo, and Shade's vehicles as well someday. It's too bad the Cat Pack stuff seems to be over too...part of me wants a spin-off about them tbh, they have so much potential and I miss them.

(They're so cute I love those kittens!)

Anyway, with all that said, who's you guys' favorite Cat Pack member...? Mine, if it wasn't obvious, is Wild, but one of my brothers likes Rory because he LOVES tigers...like, they're his favorite animal EVER. Also, if you like the Cat Pack and miss them like I do, do you have any ideas for a potential Cat Pack return? If so, I'd love to hear them!

Produce X 101 Position Evaluation Thoughts (Post ep 6/7) VOCAL/RAP POSITION

I just had a lot of thoughts after watching episodes 6 and 7 so just gonna rant here.

Firstly i just want to put it out there this the first time i followed a produce x 101 series for so long mainly because my main picks since the start are still there! (I’m looking at park sun ho and nam do hyun)

PLEASE DON’T GET ANGRY BECAUSE THESE ARE PURELY MY OWN OPINIONS WARNING LONG LONG POST AHEAD

So im just gonna go thru each performance and share my thoughts on each trainee of course im naturally going to be sort of biased so ill just follow my feelings.

VOCAL POSITION

4th. TO MY YOUTH stage,

I would say this was my least anticipated stage and i feel this is generally not a stage I would rewatch very often in the future. I’m not saying its bad in fact I love how emotional they are since I know very well how hard these lyrics hit myself being a avid bol4 fan. I just didn’t really like the arrangement of the song, its inevitable but comparing it to the original this arrangement seemed to dull out their voices abit as in it felt too loud. I think it was the adlibs that really sounded too loud when i was listening, it was emotional yes, but did it highlight their emotion as well as it could? I don’t think so. But other than that i do think this was a well done stage and finally i can start to see why everyone loves kim min kyu.

JIN WOO - I love that he chose this song because this song IS for all the teens out there trying to find their way in life and the lyrics just match him so well too and yeah it was just a good song choice i think.

SE JIN - i just like the tone of his voice its really soft and fluffy and it worked to his advantage in this song

WOO SEOK - He’s up in the ranks for a reason and he maintains that through this performance 

BYUNG CHAN - I felt like he got outshined by woo seok, maybe a poor song choice on his part, felt like his voice would suit day by day more but it is what it is and i think he did well just out shined

MIN KYU - I see improvement from my previous impressions of him and i can see him trying to sing louder as what the vocal trainers told him, only time will tell if he improves more.

3RD DAY BY DAY STAGE

This stage was nice. It was good. But it just did not really pop or leave a super lasting impression. I liked the arrangement into a rainy day style song. I liked the concept that they had. I liked their powerful vocals and harmonies. But it just didn’t stand out for some reason like I really can’t explain it. Its like the I am stage in produce 48 it was good but it just didnt pop.

CHOI SU HWAN - I’ll first declare i am biased towards him so don’t take me seriously but like i found it quite unbelievable that he got 5th place in the live voting because he was hitting those notes darn powerfully and his harmonising with yu bin was really nice and good so yes i like him and i hope he makes it through

SONG YU BIN - Same as woo seok he continues to show why he’s in the top ranks and that there’s a reason why he already debuted really nothing suprising

NAM DONG HYUN - I like his work ethic, he accepts criticism and works hard to get what he wants the arrangement that he did was pretty and his voice matched well with the song but didn’t really have much highlights during the performance apart from the high note with yubin

MOON JUN HO - I have no idea he existed until now but i loved his facial expressions and his voice aint bad but because of the lack of screentime he gets I really can’t talk much about him (im sorry)

KWON TAE EUN - Same as jun ho definitely does not get enough screen time considering the effort they probably poured into the stage

2ND TWIT STAGE

These 5 guys killed it, be it from the arrangement to their voices to their stage presence and performance everything conveyed their teamwork. Also i loved the outfits and the mic stands yes.

YOON JUNG HWAN - This guy’s stage presence is no joke where has he been all along? He knows what he’s doing that’s for sure and he is such a good pick as the center for this song, just watch the performance the way he moves its killer.

LEE HYEOB - WHERE HAS THIS GUY BEEN ALL THIS TIME TOO? When Bae Yoon Jung went “who is he?” i was like exactly I know right? This was a good song choice on his part and now i want him to go through as well maybe i just have a soft spot for independent trainees.

LEE EUN SANG - Clearly he ranked first based on popularity for this live stage but its not to say that he didn’t serve those killer looks, I could see him being a pretty good vocal but for this stage he stood out with the looks

KANG SEOK HWA - Another independent trainee that i have a soft spot for too, didn’t have many lines but was stable and did his job and also meshed well with the rest

LEE MI DAM - Damn if it weren’t for the comments I wouldn’t even be sure/ remember who arranged the song Mnet certainly could have given him some spotlight because i absolutely loved this arrangement into this sort of rock pop song

1ST ME AFTER YOU STAGE

Now this is a stage i’ve been replaying since it aired. This is up there in all the produce performances i’ve watched. These guys are made for ballads with their voices. Also i just love me a ballad and i do feel like this is the avengers team for the vocal position.

KIM YO HAN - He knows how to sing with emotion and when he does it feels like his heart is out on his sleeve, he may not have the biggest range (vocal wise) but he sure can deliver the feels

CHA JUN HO - I love the friendship between him and yo han but he definitely has to thank yo han for helping him but once that shell broke his vocals definitely shine through

KIM HYUN BIN - After the amazing performance with No More Dream i thought he was going to choose a rap position but no he chose a vocal position and he stuns. Similar to yo han he doesn’t exactly have the largest range but he does know how to sing.

HAN SEUNG WOO - He is good. He deserved the first and the center position, i feel like i’ve been saying this alot but he picked the right song he knows how his voice works and i respect him for that. But i wish someone would change his hairstyle.

WEI ZI YUE - He is trying, I can really tell he’s trying his voice is very unique and I’m not quite sure if he knows how to use it yet because the first time I watched the performance it felt a bit jarring because the rest of his team mates have those sort of clear voices but i could see he was trying to enunciate properly so thumbs up for trying.

RAP POSITION

2ND BARCODE STAGE

Before i watched the episode, I had hopes for a good stage because i love this song but after watching it i just wanted them not to cry. I think it was more upsetting because they made mistakes one by one and you could see them visibly getting less and less confident even though they were doing well. I feel sad because I could see the stage that this could have been with their different rap tones blending together and a very emotional lyrics.

WON HYUK - He was sort of evil edited but like he made up for it in his stage, he kept his calm and he kept his composure and i felt like because of that the team managed to finish the song. He was the only one that didn’t make a mistake and in fact i felt like he rapped harder because he wanted to make up for his team mates mistakes and he was good as a rapper which is surprising after his energetic performance.

BAEK JIN - He was really good and stable at the start which is why it was worse to see him fall, i think his nerves and his team’s mistakes really got to him and it broke him. His facial expressions were really good too.

YURI - His rap voice is so low and so different from his team mates that it made him stood out but imo i think from the start he already didn’t feel particularly confident, and it showed on his face and ultimately caused him to get flustered and make mistakes as well

LEE WOO JIN - I’m not sure about this but it felt like he was a vocalist? As in he felt new to rapping and the whole team vibe certainly didn’t help the situation if that was so. Tbh i think he needs more practice but he was really the most nervous even from the start but i wish him all the best

MY FAVORITE STAGE OUT OF ALL THE STAGES!! This was just so fun. They were literally having fun on the stage and this was a stage where I absoulutely loved the killing parts and everyone had one! also all their lyrics are both fun, sad and powerful at the same time, i just love this team and want all of them to go through!

NAM DO HYUN - My pick since the start and I continue to love what he brings to the table, he actually took Cheetah’s advice seriously and he killed the stage especially the part where he says I’ll be your Oppa ji I was like wow that was good and on beat and on point

JO SEUNG YEON - He trained Jaehun and Seong yeon pretty darn well and he took care of his own part too and even though his own part was short it was IMPACTFUL like that line “naega” is too damn good, he’s both main vocal and main rapper and not a joke

JUNG JAE HUN - He’s trying hard too, I can see it but i loved how he just basically acted out his part about being nervous and the lyrics in his part are so honest that they’re kind of sad especially the part where he says “the only thing i’ve shown is my temple heart”

KIM SEONG YEON - Not sure if he wrote his rap or Seung Yeon did but it was nice and simple and effective and he had his own killing part at the “ pick pick pick” line. Kinda loved him as a rapper wanna see more of him as both vocalist and rapper.

Bandito tour-Nashville

So this is later than usual but here it goes, my experience of the first show after Twenty One Pilots had been on hiatus for over a year.

Getting there:

So i had to work a closing shift that let out at 9:30 on monday but right after i booked it to get Kaylee and then we booked it to nashville. The drive was honestly great. It was so much better than the drive last month and me and K rolled the windows down and blasted Trench. It was so peaceful. Also,  if people heard some of the things we say out of context things would get very awkward.

The line:

wowowowow i actually missed camping out i hadnt done it since TDC. But we got there about 3am and it was so cold!!?!??! Kaylee ended up going to my car to sleep. So when we got there we set up her little brothers tent which was way to small for the both of us but we made it work. But like after 30 mins they moved the line and we were trying to get everything so we threw the stuff in the tent and just picked it up and shuffled our way. About 6am us and this dude named Ryan(?) went to starbucks. It was pretty chill the rest of the day i forgot the other dudes name but i painted his nails yellow and he let us have some duct tape so hes cool. And there were these people next to us that are my new best friends. Me and one of them went to get pizza for them and they let us have some. Despite me shivering the entire time i absolutely loved it. Me and Kaylee got 211 in line until they started scrunching for the show then we got 1163 i think? (163) im not sure how but it was really weird how they did everything. bUT bridgestone was super nice. There was a guy helping set the merch booth and when he saw how excited we were getting about the new merch he said "GA is gonna be blown away" and when they said that it wouldnt open till another 30 mins someone asked if we could still watch what was being put up and another guy said "of course!" then when we got in they made us all get in a line and told us that when we get in to sit down in our spot and they were gonna bring us water bc they didnt want anyone to pass out during the concert. It was so nice and every single one of the workers made it such a good experience for everyone. During the show they passed water around and made us waterfall it so other people could drink it too then near the end they just started handing out the bottles. Ive never seen an arena care so much it was amazing.

Max Frost:

What a dude! I had been listening to him for a tad before the concert in preparation but nothing could prepare me for how hyped he was. I didnt know he was doing everything so that was super cool to watch and uh Money Problems is my favorite and was so great live. Those high notes? He hit them. Love this guy and cant wait to see what the future holds for him.

Awolnation:

Um ok the guitarist didnt have to go THAT hard. i could lay on the ground and be at peace listening to them but i could also mosh like hell. They're super fucking good???? Like idk what i was expecting but they exceeded it. Really wanna go see them again...multiple times.

Twenty One Pilots:

Oh goodness i have so much to say. I didnt know that they could step their game up even more but they did. By a lot. This was my 10th concert and 2nd time seeing them and by far the best show i have ever seen. (Ive always loved fire so this next part is multiplied by like 986) the curtain dropped and it took me a second to see what was going on but when i did oh bOY. Josh was up there lookin like a fierce ass bandito holding a tORCH WITH FIRE. we were on his side second row (pretty much barricade)  so he was super close when he walked toward us i was yelling. tHEN I NOTICED TYLER coming up through the stage oN A BURNING CAR OKOKOKOK. I knew the burning car was gonna be there but that entrance??? Didnt have to be that amazing.but it was. During jumpsuit when all the flowers fell and some of the fans were throwing their own flowers to and it was so breath taking. The transition into levitate was better than anything i could ever do. I wasnt expecting him to do the death drop or go into the stands again but gUESS WHAT????? There are just so many moments and its so hard for me to put it all into words. NATN? My favorite song off the album? The one that means a lot to me? Him walking on a bridge through the crowd during it? I was gasping for air. Pet Cheetah? Incredible. Bandito? Beautiful. Neon Gravestones? Wow i love this song so much because its so raw and powerful and the fact that he put it on the setlist means he wants us to hear it. He wants us to LISTEN. Me and k were a mess. Of course it didnt help that it came right afteR MOTHER FUCKING TAXI CAB ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. You cant tell me for one second that this band does not listen to their fans. I cant believe i hears that song live wow. Leave the City was one of the songs on the record that i had trouble connecting with because i think i was trying to search to much into its meaning but seeing it live really just made it so special and i found the meaning of it, or at least what it means to me. WDBWOT was amazing as always and when we first yelled Yeah Yeah Yeah he was a little shook. He was not expecting. Idk what they were expecting this crowd to be like for the first show but you could tell by their smiles they were happy with how it played out. During Morph Tyler messed up and later called himself out on it but tbh we all did...we just kept singing with him and when he realized he messed up is when i did lmao and he also looked at josh and said Whoops and thats a whole ass mood. There are so many other moments that im sure im forgetting but if anything was taken away from this it was a little bit of love. Seeing everyone in yellow bandanas and duct tape, seeing myself in that, makes me feel fearless. I keep the term "they cant see yellow" very close to my heart. And i keep the term "east is up" even closer. Seeing everyone in yellow, and hearing everyone say that, none of us are alone. We all have each other's back. And tyler and josh? They have our backs too. Maybe not in such a personal way but they created this. All of it. They created something that has brought all of us together. They created something so interactive we truly feel like we area part of it. They tell the truth about fear and then they bring hope to life. They're Twenty One Pilots and we truly are too.

Hunger Games! au | Park Woojin

you were in district 11 the agriculture district

it was the 80th annual hunger games and saying you were nervous was a complete understatement

your mom smiled brightly at you, tucking a strand of your hair behind your ear, “dont worry sweetie, your name is only in there 5 times. there is no way you will be picked.”

you wanted to be positive

you honestly did but you couldnt help but feel that knot in your stomach and chest

it meant something bad was going to happen

but you pushed it aside to give your mom one last smile

“well, let’s hope i dont get picked.” you lean down and give her a peck on the cheek before walking out of your front door

“lee daehwi! get over here!” you screamed out once you saw your best friend walking in front of you

he turned around and broke into a huge smile as he noticed it was you

daehwi has been your best friend since the day you opened your eyes basically

both of your parents were extremely close in middle and high school, so naturally the two of you got to be close

daehwi was the light of your life tbh

he made you happy when you felt sad or insecure

everything about him was amazing

he felt the same way about you too

nothing could come between this very real and beautiful relationship

not even the stupid hunger games

“______,” daehwi grips onto your forearm when the reaping center comes into view

you grab his thin hand turning towards him with a reassuring smile

“don’t worry daehwi, you will be fine”

daehwi turns towards you with pitiful eyes

“but will you be okay?”

damn

that hit a spot in your heart

“of course i will be, we are fine every single year. let’s just get this oer with.”

daehwi gives you a bright smile that immediately puts you at ease

once you go to the center, you and daehwi are split, like every single year

that is when the nerves really kick in

you look up front where the representative from the capitol would be standing and notice a huge bowl instead of two medium sized bowls

before you could question it further, the birghtly colored woman steps onto the stage

you zone out slightly, not caring what she has to say

but something does catch your attention

“this year we will have two tributes, per usual, but they could either be both boys or both girls or boys and girls! isn’t that wonderful?”

she claps excitedly but your head shoots over to the male side and lock eyes with daehwi

his eyes show panic

“dont worry, you will be okay!” you mouth to him trying to calm your racing heart

“anyone can voluenteer too! now, let’s get on to the tributes!”

your heart starts to beat in your throat and your vision gets blurry

this happens every year

but this year, something feels off about it

“park woojin! park woojin!” the lady calls out

you let out a huge puff of air

“only one more to go, daehwi wont be chosen. calm down ____” you tap your arm slightly, trying to reassure yourself

you look up and see a strong looking teenager standing on stage

he was attractive, there is no denying that

he didn’t look scared in the least bit

honestly, he looked relieved

when the lady puts her hand back into the bowl, your palms start to sweat as you chant the mantra

“daehwi is fine, you are fine. daehwi is fine, you are fine. daehwi is fine, you are fine” over and over in your head

“lee daehwi! lee daehwi!”

your legs automatically collapse in shock

you saw all of the boys surronding daehwi part from him

blood rushes to your head, blurring your thought

the next thing you know is you are being pushed back by military guards while screaming, “i volunteer!”

you look at daehwi’s shocked face with tears running down your face

you just gave yourself a death sentence

and you couldn’t take it back

“oh! district 11′s first volunteer! come on up, sweetheart.” you pass by daehwi slowly as you walk up the stairs

he gives you a look of “what the actual hell was that” before you finally make it up the stairs and turn to the microphone

“what is your name?”

“______” you mumble, the adrenaline in your system dying down a bit 

“what is daehwi to you?”

the question strikes you as you look at daehwi’s miserable;e expression

his expression shows that he knows you are going to die

he knows his best friend is about to die because of him basically

“daehwi is my best friend, i would trade my own life for him” he looks away from you as you mutter the sentence sadly into the microphone

you knew he was crying by the way his shoulders went up and down

“district 11′s tributes for the 80th annual hunger games, park woojin and _____!!” 

no one clapped

as you were walking back stage, you could faintly hear daehwi outwardly sobbing which made your heart hurt, even more, knowing that was the last time you were ever going to see him

the lady, which you found her name was cheetah, loads you up on the train that will take you to the capitol

you and woojin sit in a suffocating silence as you look out the window

“listen,” woojin is the first the break the silence, “i will protect you until it is just the 2 of us, then it is game on. got it?”

he leans down, capturing your gaze

man, he was attractive

but all you wanted to do was you wipe that cocky expression right off of his attractive face

“who says i need your assistance?”

he scoffs, leaning back in the leather chair

“feisty, i like it.”

before you could bite back, cheetah comes rushing in with your mentor who your recognize to be ong seongwoo

ong seongwoo was ruthless

he went with his little sister to the hunger games and brutally murdered her in cold blood

they were one of the last ones 

seongwoo and his little sister went down to the river to catch some fish and suddenly something in him snapped

he grabbed her by her throat and pushed her into the frigid water

he strangled her and drowned her all at once

when her body went limp in his hands, he climbed out of the freezing water and sat up against a rock

when the canon went off, that is when it clicked in his brain what he just did

then he went on an amazing killing spree and came out victorious

it gave you shivers down your spine just thinking about it

back then seongwoo was an attractive young man, around age 16 but now he looked depressed

he had huge bags under his eyes, his hair was messy and untamed, and he no longer supported that killer smile he was known for

“what advice do you have for us?” woojin asks, arms crossed in front of his chest

“dont get attached and kill without thinking.” seongwoo deadpans, grabbing a soju bottle and downing half like it was nothing

“kill without thinking?” you ask, looking over at woojin

it seemed he was confused about that part too

seongwoo leans down in front of you, giving you a condescending smirk

“kill people ruthlessly. dont think about their families or their life they had before that moment. kill with the thought that you will never see your precious little daehwi again.”

seongwoo laughed an empty laugh at your stoic expression before walking out of the room, leaving the three of you in an unbearable silence

(i know woojin wasnt in this much but this is only part one and if people like it i will make a part two :))

I’ll do my sister cus I was just talking to her:

She’s incredibly talented at things like knitting and sewing and playing the piano, but it’s sad how much she underestimates her talents because she’s so impatient and wants to already be at a certain level and convinces herself she should be there already with how long she’s been doing it. Her natural personality is pure sarcasm and sass, teasing and poking fun and pointing out dumb questions with sarcastic answers, she has almost no filter, saying what’s on her mind even if it’s probably not the best time to say it, and sometimes she doesn’t even realize she’s doing it because it’s like her default setting. She’s got a hot head sometimes and has a tendency to get easily angered over small things, building up on top of other small things until it’s a big thing she can’t take anymore. She’s also very caring. She’s the oldest and, even though I don’t want her to do it, she has always put others before herself, ensuring that my brother and I were always comforted and taken care of first even when she felt like breaking down. With that she bottles up her emotions too much, convinces herself that her well-being doesn’t need to come first when it comes to my safety. Dream job: For my entire life, it was working in film, most recently being an editor. But within the last few months, in a dramatic turn of events, my ideal job would be doing what @tree-paine does: being the publicist of clientele in media, music, film, sports, maybe even politics. Idk.

Dream trips: Jake and I have an elaborate dream of traveling down the Alps from Frankford to Austria to Switzerland to Mulan and ending in Verona. Additionally, I am desperate to take Jake to NYC, LA, Boston, and San Fran. Would love to visit almost every hotspot in the US (Chicago, Atlanta, NOLA, Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Disneyworld, Colorado, Alaska, etc). Also VANCOUVER, lots of East Asia, lots of Europe, Giza, Jerusalem, South Africa - but I have literally never been out of the country and am TERRIFIED of flying let alone over the OCEAN. UM. I just want to be well traveled man lmao.

Favorite food: LOTTA shit I am NOT picky, but tops for sure: cinnamon rolls, cheeseburgers, pizza, mac n cheese, blueberries, pasta in general, sushi, and Jake's aglio e olio/veggie nachos.

OTHER than that, this is 100% subjective and to me personally but: Tim McGraw because those opening notes are just nostalgic as hell; Out of the Woods because when that leaked I was just starting to get back into TS and I put on my headphones and covered myself in a blanket and closed my eyes to be fully into it and oh my God...it was immersive, I will never forget that feeling; IV Sweatpants by Childish Gambino, because it was the MOST PLAYED SONG OF 2018 on our Spotify akdjakajaj; My Shot/Wait For It from Hamilton because they have both inspired and driven me to feel like I can take on the fucking world; and A Diagnosis from Crazy Ex Girlfriend because it changed my life and I have listened to it more times than I can count.

When I created this account: A few months ago. I am changing my person this year, and starting fresh with how I present my online persona was an important part of that process for me. But I have been on Tumblr on various accounts since 2010/11 lmao.

Best memory: Getting moved to the front row at my first TS concert, the 1989 Tour; so, so many things with Jake, years of memories; getting my bun; reconnecting with Sarah; a lot of SXSW 2018; my 20th birthday.

I’m three weeks into my semester abroad in Gaborone, Botswana and finally starting to feel comfortable in my new surroundings. Since my plane touched down life here has been a whirlwind- between meeting the other students in my program, getting a roommate, registering for classes, and beginning clinic visits I have only just now found time to catch my breath and reflect.  Gabs has truly taken me by surprise in the most wonderful way possible! In all the time I spent planning and imagining my time abroad I never dreamed I would encounter such a friendly, vibrant place.

This past weekend we traveled with the International Office to the Bahurutshe Cultural Village and Mokoldi Nature Reserve.  We spent Saturday exploring some of the local attractions including rocks paintings in the village of Manyana and the Livingstone Memorial, where David Livingstone, a missionary, built the Kolobeng Mission.  After an amazing braii (babeque) we traveled back to the village and spent the evening around a fire watching traditional dances. My accommodations for the night consisted of a mattress on the floor of a mud hut which, aside from the fear of bugs, was definitely more comfortable than it sounds. We arrived at Mokolodi the next morning around 10:30 and were greeted by park rangers and mimosas (one of my favorite parts tbh). The next two hours were spent on a fairly bumpy drive where we spotted impala, kudu, cheetahs, baboons, and tons of birds. We finished the weekend with another braii in the middle of Mokolodi and between the chicken and vegetables and banana caramel cake for dessert it was the best meal I’ve had since I got here.

Today was my first day of clinic!!! For the next twelve weeks I’ll be spending Tuesday mornings in various clinics around Gaborone observing the healthcare system. I spent today in the Phase 2 clinic where I weighed and measured babies. Children under five years old here come in every month for a quick checkup. The process for weighing the babies consists of hanging them in a sack from a hook attacked to a scale which may sound strange but is pretty adorable to watch. I was given more responsibility today than I expected- I recorded weight, height, HIV status, recent illness, immunizations, growth and development standards, and feeding methods for each child that was seen in the clinic. The job itself wasn’t hard but the environment was intimidating especially since many of the mothers preferred to communicate in Setswana, a language of which I know approximately three words. Aside from a few mistakes, I managed to keep up with and understand the nurses I was working with as well as learn more about childcare and development in Gabs. Overall, my first clinic experience was extremely positive.

 I can’t possibly cover everything that has happened in the past three weeks in this post but I’ll be touching more on daily life, classes, and other events in future posts!
