Tango transfers to SMH during the last week of the first month of August (just in time for the freshmen tour of the haus)

That's because when he first arrived, he was a woman, and he immediately learned during his first week that there aren't just trans women, but also trans men, and the women's hockey team (and y'all know they have a women's hockey team at Samwell) help Tango start to transition, at least socially, with his name, and updating his files at the school with the right name and pronouns.

So literally in his first month of college, Tango becomes a man.

SMH doesn't know he's trans, just think he's a late start or something, and when asked, the coaches just say it was a paperwork mix up, which it kind of was.

Tango waits until everyone else leaves the locker room to change, or he changes in the bathroom.

He's taken to wearing a back brace and a sports bra to bind because he doesn't know what else to do, he doesn't know there are literal clothes that are made to bind, or that they're called binders.

He asks questions still, but he's more quiet, mumbles a bit, and is trying to lower his voice.

The first person to call him bro doesn't understand why Tango looks so emotional about it, but figures maybe Tango doesn't have a lot of friends, so the familiarity is probably why, because it's new.

And it is, just not for the reason they think.

Whiskey usually leaves the locker room among the fastest, but one day he learns that Tango is literally the last to leave, and so he goes back in and waits up for Tango, and he heard the other in the shower and decides to just sit at his cubby.

He notices the back brace, and wonders if Tango's hurt. Is that why he joined them so late? And then he sees the sports bra and wonders if Tango's got a girlfriend.

And then Tango leaves the shower, and Whiskey looks up just as Tango freezes, and it takes a moment for Whiskey to notice it.

Tango's towel is wrapped around him at the chest, rather than the waist, and then he realizes Tango's chest is definitely not flat, and he looks up at Tango.

"My bad." He said, "I won't tell anyone."

He ends up helping Tango with the back brace, after Tango says he can look (because Tango's uncomfortable and while he trusts Whiskey's word of being respectful and treating him the same, he doesn't like his chest, and he doesn't want anyone even risking the chance of seeing his boobs-), and Whiskey is definitely not thrilled.

"This is so not safe, you know that right?" Whiskey asks him.

"Well, yeah, but-"

"But nothing. Why haven't you gotten a binder?" Whiskey cuts him off, and Tango is quiet.

And quietly tells Whiskey he's only just realized he was a man and that the women's team helped him with his name and papers, but he was going through this alone otherwise, and Whiskey realizes that Tango doesn't know what a binder is.

Whiskey takes Tango to a local drag show where a friend of his is working, and the friend is a drag queen, and Whiskey asks her for help because he's hopeless, it's been like, a month, and she immediately gets the other drag queens and some drag kings and Tango is overwhelmed as they give him advice and tips, and several write down where they got their binders.

He then learns at least half of these people are students at Samwell and are part of the "queer support group" (It's actually the gay straight alliance of Samwell, but they make jokes it's a queer support group, because "the only straight person who ever came was Shitty Knight!"), and they tell Tango to join them.

Tango goes the next meeting.

Two Lax Bros are there, and they just stare at each other, and then just nod in solidarity.

recently i read fully through check, please for the fourth time and it really got me thinking ... i've had a different favourite character for each time i've read this comic now, and each choice really reflects where i was in terms of my own personal life.

first readthrough: jack

i feel like it will surprise no one to know that at this point i was an angsty kid with anxiety issues reading this in my literal bedroom closet. i wish i was joking, it was uncomfortable as hell

second readthrough: whiskey

my first read was actually when year 4 hadn't come out yet, and so i ended up reading the whole thing again during year 4 since i forgot so much. this readthrough came along with one of my Queer Crises about labels, and as such it was a lot easier to relate to whiskey. both jack and bitty are so self-assured and open, but even in an accepting community, it's fucking terrifying

third readthrough: kent

i didn't even think about this comic for another three years, and then one day i remembered it and went back. in that meantime i had gone through a friend's od, and so, surprise surprise, it was parse who i ended up latching onto. this was also the read during which i actually got into the fandom side of things, and so he's probably always going to be my lasting favourite

final thoughts

looking back, it seems pretty fucking obvious that i would connect to the characters who had similar Problems to mine, but at the same time it's really interesting to think about. we don't consciously choose our favourite characters, but they reflect us regardless.

people like people who are like them, i guess.

My dad, who often just says things out loud with no rhyme or reason (much like I do; ADHD style), randomly said “WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT” and in short order I realized 1) why that became Ford’s nickname in OMGCP 2) that it stands for WTF and 3) THAT IM VERY SILLY FOR NOT HAVING REALIZED THIS EARLIER

The situation boils down to this: there's a kid (wearing an SMH shirt) standing on Chad's front porch, escorted by a men's rugby player and one of his own teammates (sophomore, attack and occasional middie) and looking like he'd like the ground to swallow him whole. "He's having issues with his team and needs to avoid them tonight," Dylan says without preamble, and shoves the hockey kid closer to Chad before sliding through he door with the rugby boy in tow. "Hey," Chad says softly, directing his voice at the hockey kid. "I'm Chad L. You can call me L or Chad, but yelling Chad will get you a whole bunch of answers in this house." The hockey boy nods. Chad realizes, suddenly, that he's blocking the door and that he's left an uncomfortable student - who's trying to hide from his team, no less - on his porch, and feels like an idiot.

It wasn’t something they really talked about. Chad was a senior now, after all, and he would be leaving soon.

Tony always wanted to talk about it, make plans to meet up and all, but whenever he tried to ask, Conner would frown, and Kyle would say nah, we got time, Tony.

Chad only found out about Tony’s attempts because Denice slammed the door open to his bedroom in the Lax House, and crossed her arms.

“Uh… Hi?” He said, raising an eyebrow as he laid in bed, in nothing but boxers and binder. “I think you could’ve knocked so I could-”

“I got the same parts.” She said flatly.

“And maybe that’s the issue for me.” Chad complained, and she faltered, before sighing.

“Sorry.” She said, “But we have a problem.”

“What kind of problem?” He asked, sitting up. The junior sighed, but sat on the edge of his bed.
