En el pasado se creía que, durante la Noche de Brujas, la línea que une a este mundo con el de los muertos se estrechaba y los espíritus buenos y malos podían pasar a través de ella, caminando entre los vivos. Un relato que como muchos otros se quedó en el olvido de la mano del tiempo, convirtiendo el ultimo día de octubre en lo que para el año 2010 se conocía como Halloween en los Estados Unidos. El noticiero de la mañana marco el inicio de noviembre, la inflación disminuyo, el otoño estaba cerca y el alguacil de policía de King County en el estado de Georgia que había sido herido el día anterior durante una persecución policiaca continuaba en delicado estado de salud. Así, noviembre comenzó con toda normalidad en un mundo que giraba a gran velocidad. La renta, las facturas, un empleo, el resultado de la Super Bowl y un fin de semana memorable eran algunas de las principales preocupaciones de muchos. Nadie podría haber visto venir lo que sucedería, ¿cómo hacerlo? Las historias de ultratumba eran solo eso, historias... Hasta que dejaron de serlo.

Nadie sabe con certeza cómo y por qué apareció aquel extraño virus letal, mucho menos que causo que después de matar a su huésped, este aún pudiera moverse, pero una cosa fue cierta: Ya no eran los mismos. Atacaron a todo ser vivo sin distinción alguna, mostrándose violentos, con afectaciones en su motricidad, raciocinio y con tolerancia total al dolor, pero lo peor de todo, con comportamientos propios de un cuadro extremo de canibalismo. Por desgracia, el mundo no pudo hacer nada contra lo que muy tarde fue identificado como el cuadro de contagio humano más aterrador de la historia: Una mordida, incluso un rasguño de un sujeto con dichas características, y en cuestión de horas el dolor, la debilidad y la fiebre cobrarían la vida de la víctima, quien eventualmente se levantaría de nuevo como alguien totalmente diferente: Un muerto viviente. Aterrador nombre, pero lo realmente importante fue que estos seres, junto al contagio masivo, causaron una ola de muerte de proporciones apocalípticas, apagando el mundo en cuestión de semanas y uniendo a sus filas al menos a la mitad de la población humana.

Leyes and the others were marking the International Survivors of #Suicide Loss Day. “I lost my son in 2014 to #suicide, and I’ve done a lot of community events and teaching and that sort of thing. I want people to know that they’re not alone, that you can get through this,” said Leyes who was volunteering at the event. The Central Oregon #SuicidePrevention Alliance along with Deschutes County Health Services sponsored the event, which included a screening of a documentary produced by the #AmericanFoundationforSuicidePrevention and discussion groups for those dealing with loss. “It helps me to be able to help others. The mystery of sinkholes? Why? Where? 

Some Facts:

- there are three types: 1. Solution, 2. Cover Collapse and 3. Cover Subsidence

- they often occur where there is karst terrain, these are regions where the types of rock below the land surface can naturally dissolve by groundwater, soluble rock include salt beds and domes, gypsum, limestone and carbonate rock.

- sinkholes can vary from a few feet to hundreds of acres, and from less than 1 to more than 100 feet deep. 

- some are shaped like shallow bowls or saucers and others are vertical walls, some hold water and form natural ponds. 

- the largest in the world is the Xiaozhai Tiankeng in China, with a depth of 2, 172 feet and dubbed “The Heavenly Pit” it was discovered in 1994.

- there is one call the Dragon Hole (also known as Yongle Blue Hole), named after the third Ming Emperor,  in the Parcels Islands it’s 987 feet (300.89 meters deep)

- March 2022, downtown core of Toronto on Camden street, in front of the Ace Hotel, into the bowels of Toronto’s sewer system. 

- other areas in Canada that have unstable soils and bedrock, Guelph, Rockwood, Manitoulin Island, Bruce Peninsula, just to name a few.

- May 2022, discovered by cave explorers, outside Ping’e Village in Leye County, South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, found a primitive forest inside this giant sinkhole that is 630 feet deep. When exploring it they found ancient trees and other plant life.

Scientists Discover Ancient Forest at Bottom of Gigantic Sinkhole

Put that thing back where it came from or so help me!

Actually, it could all turn out okay. Scientists in China have discovered previously unknown animal and plant species lurking at the bottom of a sinkhole in in Leye County, the Guardian reported yesterday. Some brave spelunkers found the more than 1,000-foot-long and 629-foot deep sinkhole while exploring caves in the region.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to know that there are species found in these caves that have never been reported or described by science until now,” expedition team lead Chen Lixin told the outlet.

Zhang Yuanhai, a senior engineer at the Institute of Karst Geology of the China Geological Survey, also told a state news outlet that the site has three caves as well as an ancient forest hiding in its depths. There are also 100-foot-tall trees inside, NPR reported yesterday, and there’s about 30 of other, similar massive sinkholes in the country.

Spelunking Species

Lixin’s prediction about new species is likely to come true, because isolated environments the world over have long been creating interesting, unique plants and animals that adapt to their biome. The Galapagos Islands are probably the best known example and boast several native species found nowhere else, but even the cold waters of the Antarctic turn up discoveries for researchers.

There’s no telling what’s in that forest, but whatever it is, we sure hope it comes in peace.

State of Missouri v. Celia, a Slave

Robert Newsom, a prosperous man that settled in Callaway County, bought Celia, his first female slave (he had other five male slaves). He travelled to Audrain County to purchase her.

It is likely that Newsom raped the 14-year-old Celia for the first time on the journey from Audrain County back to Callaway County.

Between 1850 and 1855, Newsom repeatedly raped Celia, and she bore two children over the course of those five years, at least one of whom was fathered by Newsom.

At some point before 1855, Celia began a romantic relationship with George, one of Newsom's other slaves. She was pregnant for a third time with a child that was likely fathered by either George or Newsom.

At some point, George gave Celia an ultimatum and told her "he would have nothing more to do with her if she did not quit the old man."

Sometime on or around June 23, 1855, Celia begged Newsom to leave her alone because she was sick and pregnant. Newsom refused and told her that he was coming down to her cabin that night. Celia threatened Newsom and told him that she would hurt him if he tried to rape her again.

On the night of June 23, 1855, Robert Newsom came to Celia's cabin, as he had told her that he would. Celia made an attempt to reject his predatory advances, and when he refused to back down, she clubbed him over the head with the stick that she had brought into her cabin earlier that day. After she had hit him the first time, he reached out his arms as if he was trying to grab her. She clubbed him a second time, which killed him. She then moved his body into her fireplace and spent the rest of the night burning his remains. She crushed some of Newsom's smaller bones with a rock.

Celia, who made no attempt to flee after she had killed her owner but instead resumed her normal activities was questioned when Newsom’s daughter began to worry. Celia initially denied any knowledge of what had happened to Newsom.

They continued to interrogate her and used accusations and threats to get her to confess. Eventually, Celia confessed that she had killed Newsom and attempted to dispose of his body, but she maintained that "she did not intend to kill him when she struck him, but only wanted to hurt him."

Celia is taken to the county jail and was there until her hearing date arrived. The defense asked the jury (twelve white men) to acquit her if they truly believed she did it in self-defense. In Missouri this was a crime: "To take any woman illegally against her will and by force, threat or duress, compel her to be desecrated."

They emphasized “any woman” and that this included enslaved females and that Celia could not be convicted because she was trying to avoid being raped when she killed Newsom.

On October 10, 1855, Celia was found guilty and sentenced to die by hanging.

On November 11, 1855, five days before her scheduled execution, someone removed Celia from her cell. She returned to her cell a few days after her execution date and was assigned a new date, December 21.

Her defense team requested an appeal, which was denied, afterwards they requested for the Supreme Court to review her case and for a Stay of execution so it would not arrive before her hearing at the Supreme Court. On December 14 1855, the court responded by, stating that after having reviewing the case, they were not going to pause the execution date.

Celia was hanged on December 21, 1855, at 2:30 p.m.

The laws of the time recognized that Celia was Robert Newsom's property, and that he was within his rights to do whatever he wanted with her, including rape.

Enslaved could neither give nor refuse consent, nor offer reasonable resistance, yet they were criminally responsible and liable. The slave was recognized as a reasoning subject, who possessed intent and rationality, solely in the context of criminal liability."

Un 23 de Junio de 1855, Celia le rogó a Newsom que la dejara en paz porque estaba enferma y embrazada. Newsom se negó y dijo que iría a su cabaña esa noche. Ella lo amenazó y le dijo que si intentaba violarla otra vez, ella lo lastimaría.

Tal y como lo había dicho, se presentó a la cabaña esa noche y con un palo que Celia tenía en una esquina, le pegó en la cabeza y este colapso, luego de que vio que había extendido sus brazos para sujetarla, le dio un segundo golpe y este fue el que lo mató. Quemó los restos en la chimenea y aplastó los huesos pequeños con una piedra.

Celia no pretendía huir, se quedó y retomó sus quehaceres a la mañana siguiente. La hija de Newsom sospechó de que algo andaba mal y cuando comenzaron los interrogatorios, ella aseguraba que no sabía nada.

Por medio de amenazas y acusaciones lograron que Celia confesará, mencionó que no tenía la intención de matarlo, solo lastimarlo.

Celia es llevada a la prisión del condado y allí estuvo hasta que llegó la fecha de su audiencia. La defensa le pidió al jurado (doce hombres blancos) que la absolvieran si en verdad creían que ella lo hizo en defensa propia. Ya que en Missouri esto era un crimen: “Tomar a cualquier mujer ilegalmente contra su voluntad y por la fuerza, amenaza o coacción, obligarla a ser profanada”.

Enfatizaron “cualquier mujer” y que esto incluía a las esclavas y que Celia no podía ser condenada debido a que estaba tratando de evitar ser violada cuando mató a Newsom.

El 10 de octubre de 1855, Celia fue encontrada culpable y sentenciada a la horca.

El 11 de noviembre de 1855, cinco días antes de su ejecución programada, alguien sacó a Celia de su celda. Regresó a su celda, unos días después de la fecha y le asignaron una fecha diferente, 21 de diciembre.

Las leyes de ese entonces reconocían que Celia era nada más que un objeto, propiedad de Robert Newsom y que estaba en su derecho de hacer lo que quisiera con ella, incluso violarla. Este caso demostró que una persona esclavizada no puede dar o negar consentimiento, ni mostrar resistencia sin embargo tiene responsabilidad penal. Un esclavo era reconocido como un objeto que posee intención y racionalidad, únicamente en el contexto de responsabilidad penal.
