bonjour mom this might be a stupid question but i'm super interested in environmental protection and i'm trying to go vegan and buy less and all that jazz but everything is super expensive if it's local or it's okay but they have to fly it here etc and i understand your idea of only getting quality stuff but like i don't know yet what i like so i don't want to splurge (not that i could anyway) and i want to avoid amazon but it's super practical and at least it's for sure not a scam and i WILL get my package etc, and sometimes i do like a bit of dairy or i'll have birthday cake but i feel super guilty about it and i'm getting super anxious, do you have any advice??

Hello dear (and oh boy, this is going to be another wall of text),

I've been there. I went vegetarian with the hopes of becoming vegan back in 2012, went super minimalist, started to buy way less, switched to bulk and organic, got a menstrual cup, felt like I had to donate money I didn't have because others needed it more than me and felt awful every time I binned something thinking I actually didn't need that thing and that was a selfish decision, and it was so hard to see other people around me not caring about these things. It was eating me alive and making me bitter and sadder than a bag of rocks. It's a real thing called eco-anxiety and it's well-documented at this point so you can look it up.

In my case, researching capitalism and going to therapy were the key. Because little old me being vegan not only wasn't sustainable because I had personal issues with food and ADHD and it made it worse, but at the end of the day it's not going to be enough to annihilate centuries of specism and make the industry change its mind; just like little old me feeling guilty about buying ice cream because I was going to have to throw away the pot is the most insignificant thing in the world when you look at what Nestlé or cruise boats are doing to the planet.

Whatever you do, you will have to sacrifice something and it will never be enough - you've already noticed it. Change comes gradually, when people come together and stand against what's wrong, which has been harder to do these days where we routinely lose family members and friends to Facebook radicalisation. My advice is to do what I've been doing, after years of trial and error: putting myself first, staying realistic about my goals, practising empathy, remembering to be a role model rather than a preacher, and giving myself time before I make a decision.

I like you prefer to boycott Amazon but between shipping fees, delivery time, dodgy neighbours, prices, fear of scammers (...), I used it occasionally to get stuff whenever it felt like the best solution. But then, at the beginning of the pandemic, I bought face masks online from a French pharmacy, which cost quite a lot but I was trying to do the good thing. Three weeks later I received a white piece of plastic that looked like every package from Wish videos on Youtube from somewhere in China that contained the masks with a little note in broken English stating that those were only for fashion and couldn't be worn for medical reasons.

I did some research and realised that they bought the items for pennies on Aliexpress and got the suppliers to directly send me my order - it's a very scammy and common concept called drop shipping. If you're looking for anything brandless on Amazon (from sunglasses to hairbrushes to decoration and gym equipment), check out Aliexpress and your cart will go from 132,99 to 17 bucks in under five minutes. So after years of judging people who use Aliexpress or Wish, I started doing the same, because what I receive is the exact same thing, but there's no mediocre business tycoon wannabee making a profit on my behalf in between.

And ever since, I've rethought my beliefs. I no longer feel bad about wanting children even though every human being creates a lot of waste in a world where Kylie Jenner takes a private jet to avoid a 40-minute drive. I no longer feel bad about occasionally flying to go on vacation because I have only one shot at living and once in a while I deserve a break. I no longer feel bad about doing my nails even though I will have to buy and dispose of cotton buds because I'm tired of neglecting my happiness to avoid worsening problems I haven't even caused.

I still do what I can. I'm still conscious of what I do, don't waste water, buy all my clothes secondhand, donate money whenever I can and all that, but I'm at peace. I try and that's what matters in a world where succeeding is not an option.

It comes after Russia’s defence ministry said it had invited experts from the UN and Red Cross to examine the deaths “in the interests of conducting an objective investigation”.

The ICRC condemned Friday’s attack in which at least 50 prisoners died, Reuters reported.

“Families must receive urgent news of and answers on what happened to their loved ones. The parties must do everything in their power, including through impartial investigations, to help determine the facts behind the attack and bring clarity to this issue. However, it is not the role or mandate of the ICRC to carry out public investigations into alleged war crimes,” the ICRC said in a statement

“Early in the morning on July 31, a leading figure in Ukraine’s agribusiness, tycoon Oleksiy Vadaturskyi, and his wife Raisa Vadaturska were killed by a Russian strike that hit their home in the southern city of Mykolaiv.

The 74-year-old businessman was the founder of Nibulon, one of Ukraine’s largest agricultural holdings, specializing in the production and export of a variety of products, including grain, wheat, and corn.

In 2021, Vadaturskyi’s net worth was $430 million, according to Forbes Ukraine.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky's Office, said Russia had deliberately targeted the businessman.

“In my opinion, the death of Oleksiy Vadaturskyi was not an accident, but a thought-out deliberate murder,” he said.

According to Podolyak, the Russian missile struck the bedroom of Vadaturskyi’s house, indicating that the attack was a premeditated assassination.

Videos from the scene show the strike hit precisely the wing where the couple’s bedroom was. Their house was the only building in the neighborhood hit by a Russian rocket.

“Vadaturskyi was clearly a target,” Podolyak said.

“President Vladimir Putin on Sunday signed a new naval doctrine which cast the United States as Russia's main rival and set out Russia's global maritime ambitions for crucial areas such as the Arctic and in the Black Sea.

Speaking on Russia's Navy Day in the former imperial capital of St Petersburg founded by Tsar Peter the Great, Putin praised Peter for making Russia a great sea power and increasing the global standing of the Russian state.

After inspecting the navy, Putin made a short speech in which he promised that what he touted as Russia's unique Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, cautioning that Russia had the military clout to defeat any potential aggressors.

Shortly before the speech, he signed a new 55-page naval doctrine, which sets out the broad strategic aims of Russia's navy, including its ambitions as a "great maritime power" which extend over the entire world.

The main threat to Russia, the doctrine says, is "the strategic policy of the USA to dominate the world's oceans" and the movement of the NATO military alliance closer towards Russia's borders.

Russia may use its military force appropriately to the situation in the world's oceans should other soft powers, such as diplomatic and economic tools, be exhausted, the doctrine says, acknowledging that Russia does not have enough navy bases globally.

Russia's priority was to develop strategic and naval cooperation with India as well as wider cooperation with Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and other states in the region, according to the doctrine.

"Guided by this doctrine, the Russian Federation will firmly and resolutely defend its national interests in the world's oceans, and having sufficient maritime power will guarantee their security and protection," the document said.

Putin's speech did not mention the conflict in Ukraine, but the military doctrine envisages a "comprehensive strengthening of Russia's geopolitical position" in the Black and Azov seas.”-via Reuters

An Incomplete History of the FICTIONAL America’s Cup

In the Beginning

The oldest continuously-contested trophy in international sports, for almost 175 years the America's Cup sailing races have been known for glamour, intrigue, and controversy.

The first competition was organized by the British Royal Yacht Squadron in 1851 as part of that year's Great Exhibition, challenging sailing ships from any nation to race the Squadron's best around the Isle of Wight. Unfortunately for the Brits, the race ended up being won by the New York Yacht Club's America, and the ornate silver trophy they had purchased was taken back to the United States. (Both The Doctor and The Master may have secretly been present at this event.)

Several years later, the New York Yacht Club decided to make the trophy part of an ongoing international competition. Under the very formal "gentleman's agreement" rules of the time, races were arranged almost like duels, with a representative of a foreign yacht club (usually British) submitting a request to "challenge", upon which the NYYC, as "defenders" were allowed to chose the date, location, boat type, and equipment.

Unsurprisingly, with their club essentially allowed to make the rules, the NYYC's American teams would overwhelmingly win every America's Cup competition for the rest of the Victorian Era and into the 20th century.

[This is all real-world information, but citations for it happening this way in fiction include the historical fiction novel Sparrowhawk on the Horizon and Morgan Weld's model room speech in Wind.]

The First Hundred Years

In addition to the tilted rules, it should also be noted that around the turn of the 20th century, the NYYC was led by noted dark sorcerer J. P. Morgan, who may have used magic to further tip things in the Americans' favor— indeed, a mysterious murder that may have been a human sacrifice took place during the NYYC's 1900 annual cruise.

Novelist Mark Twain was actually part of the American crew during the 1903 competition, and attempted, somewhat confusingly, to interview himself afterwards.

Despite the best efforts of Irish tea baron Sir Thomas Lipton and Scottish millionaire Scrooge McDuck, American teams continued to outrace challengers from the British Isles into the 1930s, but were defeated by American skipper Harold Russell. One of Lipton's colleagues attempted to build a J-Class yacht of his own in New Zealand using local timber, but this ship, the Erewhon, would be wrecked and forgotten until 2007.

Because New York Harbor had become too busy, racing was relocated to the posh resort town of Newport, Rhode Island, before being interrupted by WWII.

When the races resumed in the 1950s, the familiar pattern of British teams losing badly to Americans continued. But in 1962, the first Australian challengers would arrive. Facing sailors fortified by Australium and equipped with that island continent's advanced technology, the Americans found themselves, for the first time in 100 years, actually challenged.

The Summer Everything Changed

Still, the Americans were not without resources of their own. With the brains of scientist Matt Hooper (Hooper says in the film that he's sailed "three TransPacs and an America's Cup trial"), the financial backing and tenacity of TV tycoon Tex McGraw, and the seamanship of captains like Alan Seton, Paul Normandin, and Morgan Weld, the United States managed to prevail in the competitions of the 1970s. (Onshore in Newport, summer 1974 also saw the kidnapping of socialite Penelope Pike.) But with the NYYC now receiving so many challenge requests that a separate series had to be organized for the foreign teams to race each other for the chance to contend with the Americans, it was clear that things were changing…

The 1983 America's Cup in Newport is notable for many reasons. It was the first time a female sailor— American Kate Bass— was formally part of any competing crew, training as part of Morgan Weld's Radiance team. Unfortunately, sexist senior NYYC officials dismissed Bass from the team before competition begun, while her fiancé Will Parker remained part of the Radiance team. During the summer of 1983, a mysterious jewel thief was also at large in Newport, taking advantage of the high-society balls and parties surrounding the Cup to commit robberies. (This may have been one of the Lupins, Walter Hardy, or another "gentleman thief" of the period.) Also stalking the waterfront that summer was international assassin Marie-Ange Planchet, who had been hired to kill members of the Defiant team.

(Far away, on the other side of the world, drug mule Ray Jenkins was caught by police in Melbourne, Australia, and spent this period under surveillance.)

But the main reason the 1983 competition will be remembered is the actual action on the water. With an innovative hydrodynamic boat design and skilled captain Jack Neville, the Australian Team Boomerang quickly beat all of the other foreign challengers, and seemed to be an even match for the American Radiance. For the first time in history, the America's Cup came down to a 3-3 tie, with one final deciding race to determine it all. For most of the last race, Radiance had a small lead over Boomerang, but an onboard accident allowed the Australians to slip ahead, and then to pull away.

After 130 years, the America's Cup would leave America.

The Cup Down Under

The Boomerang crew became national heroes in Australia, celebrated with ticket-tape parades and fireworks. The sleepy port of Fremantle, Western Australia underwent massive renovations as the Australians prepared for their eventual title defense. With the breaking of the NYYC's stranglehold and the change of scenery, the Royal Perth Yacht Club received challenges from many foreign clubs, most infamously the Japanese Sasori.

Unfortunately, despite the club's investments in security, several nefarious parties attempted to steal the Cup during its time in Perth.

Back in the United States, the various American teams attempting to reclaim the trophy and their country's honor seemed to be in disarray. In Maine, yacht designer Jack Briggs, working for the Challenge syndicate, was found bludgeoned to death in his workshop. In Maryland, the residents of the small town of Oxford organized their own underfunded but quixotic challenge. And in Newport, Radiance skipper and team owner Morgan Weld, "the man to blame", suffered a nervous breakdown after the defeat, becoming a recluse for several years.

Will Parker, however, was undeterred. Together with Kate Bass and his old Radiance teammates, and with backing from Weld's daughter Abigail, they created their own Geronimo syndicate.

In the 1987 competition, Parker and Bass's Geronimowould face Jack Neville's Platypus in a rematch of sorts. This time, however, the Americans were victorious, and Bass went down in history as the first female sailor to be part of an America's-Cup-winning crew.

Northbound and South Again

Although they had constructed their boats at Deadman's Flat, a desert airfield in the Mojave, the Geronimo team were formally affiliated with the San Diego Yacht Club, and would defend their title in that city's waters.

In 1992, a British aristocrat hired the famous Japanese art restorer Zero to build a perfect replica of the original schooner America for that year's competition. Although it was not allowed to compete with the new monohulls of the International America's Cup Class, the replica was a memorable tourist attraction during the event.

The 1995 competition would again see the America's Cup trophy change hands. Despite attempted sabotage and murder by an overzealous San Diego Yacht Club official, Team New Zealand would defeat American defender Dan Cahill's Stars & Barswith help from a teenager named Mike Lucas. (An all-female team, Mighty Mary, had been defender candidates but lost narrowly to Cahill.)

With the damage to the global economy caused by the following year's Martian-Harvester War, this would be the last America's Cup competition of the century. The City of San Diego's search for alternate tourism draws after the loss to New Zealand may have influenced their approval of InGen's Jurassic Park San Diego project, with disastrous results.

In the United States, the 1990s editions of the America's Cup were covered extensively on the Continental Sports Network's Sports Night program, with co-anchor Dan Rydell being an avid fan.

The 21st Century

The 2000s saw the New Zealanders defending their title against new challengers like the Soviet Federation's Ivan Illich, Italian Tommaso Bortolotti, and Japanese prodigy Jin Kazama. Unexpectedly, however, they would be defeated by an international team based in the landlocked nation of Switzerland that included American Maxwell Tate. [This is a slim thread to import Team Alinghi's history on, but in the episode Tate was literally described as crewing on "the SUI-64".] A landlocked country winning the world's most famous sailing competition was commonly considered, amongst other strange events of the period, as proof "the world is going crazy".

As the Swiss had no "home waters" on which to host the competition, the team made an arrangement with a city in the south of Spain to stage the racing in the Mediterranean. One notable unsuccessful American team of the late 2000s was backed by billionaire Richard Roman, who also steered the boat.

In 2010, Team TerraMemory USA, sponsored by American computer magnate Barry Dominic (possibly a guise of the Time Lord known as The Master), would finally return the trophy to the United States, after defeating the Swiss in one of the fiercest contests in the history of the Cup. Dominic introduced controversial technological changes, such as racing in double-hulled catamarans that made the races faster, but also more dangerous. During training for the 2013 competition in San Francisco, skipper Catherine Voss was murdered, but her replacement on Team TerraMemory was still able to win.

At some point in the 2010s, a group of "altruistic pirates" called the "East-Western Yacht Club" stole a catamaran being used by the Italian America's Cup team and attempted to use it to deliver food and medicine to the Middle East.

Although they were helped by a tree frog named Tiny, Team TerraMemory would lose the 2017 competition to Team New Zealand. During the most recent America's Cup, held in Auckland in 2021, the New Zealanders successfully defended their title, despite some difficulties caused by a bumbling local news crew.

(Two hydrofoil catamarans similar to the designs used by Barry Dominic were known to be owned by Russian arms dealer Andrei Sator sometime in the 2020s. But that's another story…)

In one possible future, the 2032 America's Cup in Melbourne, Australia suffered interference from both American and Australian warships interested in seeing their nation's yacht succeed. While the American team was victorious, a group of disgruntled Australians would attempt to steal the trophy back several years later.

If kinda been going in a new direction for me. As pocket trains is still addicting, I just got into to new games that I think are just as addicting as pocket trains.

One of them is cookie run kingdom. (CRK) And Roblox cruise ship tycoon (CST)(on my laptop, duh) And these to games are just as fun.

I actually play crk just as I was posting on my Tumblr, but cst is new and I CANNOT STOP PLAYING. I'll maybe post something on my YouTube channel about it, Probably not.

the sadık family yacht, named yakamoz ( sea sparkle ) was purchased back in 2018 after kerem sadık sold the old family yacht and decided to celebrate the most successful year for their company, sadık lojistick. the sadıks sold their last cruise line ship in 2006, focusing solely on the ever-growing international shipping industry. the 91.5m ice-classed yacht is an ocean-going world exploration vessel and it was designed by oceanco and winch design. the true price of the yakamoz was never revealed to the public as the yacht had never been available for public purchase. it remained reserved for the shipping tycoon kerem sadık until it’s official launch in march of 2018. yakamoz has enormous outside living areas and very comfortable indoor guest areas with connections to the outside. the yacht’s interior is a masterpiece of both style and texture with wenge, gold leaf, bamboo, bleached oak and travertino velluto marble creating the ultimate in indulgent relaxation. from its magnificent guest accommodation to its various saloons and deck areas, the yacht has an extensive choice of socializing and lounging spaces. situated on the upper deck. the master suite includes a spacious lounge and study, with a private exterior door leading to a deck area with a jacuzzi. a full-beam VIP suite is located on the bridge deck while additional guest suites are located on the main deck, including two VIP cabins. the yacht’s outside space is equally impressive, offering all the usual facilities of a yacht of this size. the upper deck features a 20sqm pool and huge sun lounging area aft on the helipad, certified for an airbus EC-135 or equivalent. down on the lower deck the extensive beach club, offers a bar and lounging area, which is directly connected to a fully equipped gym with a sea terrace, beauty salon, hammam, plunge pool, and showers. yakamoz has a top speed of 18.5 knots, a cruising speed of 15 knots, and a range of 5,000nm at 14 knots. yakamoz boasts two 10.5 meter hodgson tenders, one sport, and one closed limousine, that can accommodate up to 12 guests and two crew in each. it also carries an impressive range of water toys including jet skis, wave runners, seabobs, and a radinn electric surfboard. the sadık family keeps the yacht docked in either istanbul or portofino, but it can also be rented for 1 million dollars per week. the family is notorious for their privacy and does not rent out the yacht to just anyone, offering a waiting list instead. however, banu sadık first set foot on the yacht in the summer of 2019. it’s been said that she still hasn't forgiven her husband for selling their old family yacht without her permission, a yacht that had been with their family since 1991, and held plenty of memories for the matriarch. despite both of their busy schedules, kerem and banu had spent plenty of family vacations with their two daughters on the old yacht, teaching them both to embrace the seas and oceans that run in their veins. banu’s resentment hasn’t subsided even till this day, as she condones her husband’s ostentatious display of wealth and claims that the money could’ve been donated to various charities and organizations instead. yakamoz is, however, a symbol of the sadık success, fitted only for the ship lords. the yacht is supposedly and currently rented by a famous american actor.
