Made myself cry piecing together what i think will be the outline for the end of teen jon :)

what kinda problems does tma have? i haven’t finished listening to the whole thing yet but i don’t mind spoilers. asking because i wanted to gauge if it’s something i haven’t gotten to yet or something i’ve missed!
oh yeehaw i will gladly tell you!
full disclosure i haven't actually finished listening to it, I still need to pick up again after s3 but I've listened up till then
also spoilers below for anyone planning on listening to it!
anyway, tma is overall a VERY good podcast and especially in the horror genre, its incredibly well written and effective and genuinely fucking scary and unsettling, and manages to do that without using misogyny or homophobia/transphobia as a device to achieve the sense of dread you get in pretty much every episode. that being said there's a few instances of casual (unintended) racism, such as episode 72 which has a case of anti-chinese racism where the villain is a Chinese cannibal that owns a takeaway shop. that is the most blatant example I remember, there are likely others I have missed because I am white and these things go over my head, but if other people remember better than I do I encourage them to respond to this!
in terms of other problems, to be honest I think what I'm talking about is just my engagement with the show - namely Daisy Tonner. she's a police detective who gets involved with the main cast during s2 and is an avatar of the hunt, sometimes headcanoned by fans as being werewolf like in nature. she's not a nice person, nasty and blunt and rude and brutal, and there are several instances in the show where she kills others and justifies it with reasoning ranging from 'suspected to be a vampire' to 'my boss told me to'. she's violent and cruel and her morality is tied to the law, in that she takes the orders she's given and works to uphold an unjust system based on her perception of other people as a threat, and this comes out in almost every interaction she has with anyone, especially jon, the main character. at one point she kidnaps him and holds him at knifepoint in the woods, fully intending to kill him, before something stops her (its been a while since I've listened to it I can't quite remember what gfjkds).
as a character i fucking adore her. i love female characters who are actually seriously vicious and cruel and horrible people and allowed to be awful, the narrative doesn't shame them for their personality. to me daisy means a lot and I see a lot of myself in her horrible attitude and nasty demeanour (take that as you will ghjfdksl).
but i can't deny that she's a cop and comes with everything that entails. she's suspicious of everyone, she threatens legal action that she can take, and failing that threatens violent action instead, sometimes acting on it. she's part of a group that works to protect their own and target suspects for their own personal agenda rather than any actual sense of 'justice'. as much as I love her for being a female character with bite and attitude, she is like that for a reason. she's also incredibly emotionally dependent on Basira, her coworker-turned-magnus-archives-employee. their relationship is quite homoromantic but its never confirmed as actually romantic or anything because fuck cops, lesbians or not.
(if you're worried about queerbaiting in the show tho, don't, I promise there's none, because no one ever advertised the show as being queer friendly/having canon queer relationships so they literally didn't bait anyone at all, and people who say that don't actually know what queerbaiting means)
i love daisy as a character and I do think she is a very interesting exploration of police institutions, especially with the lens of the hunt and the horror that all that entails, I think its very well done as horror literature. but there's a reason people hate her and it'd be unfair of me to not warn you of the kinds of things she does in the show, in case that's upsetting for you.
in terms of the actual show content, trigger warnings range from gore, body horror, insects, depression, mental health, paranoia, unreality, and many more, and various times they intersect with instances of marginalised characters that don't come across as well-intentioned as the creators probably wanted.
this is a list of trigger warnings by episode (all 200 of 'em) and is generally good for checking if you can listen to the episode, especially the earlier seasons, because it wasn't until about s4ish that they started including trigger warnings for really graphic things in the episode introductions.
this is a folder of transcripts of all the episodes, which I personally found helpful when starting the show. i'd often read transcripts and if I could handle that, id listen to the episode (until I binged half of s1 in a week and got used to the general sense of dread the show gave me and after that I just dived in lmao).
thats mostly what i talk about in terms of bad - the show is good, so good, but it is a tragedy and it is horror and it has some horrendous people, some of which will be worse than others, and being horror it's gonna upset you in some areas. tread with caution, look at the trigger warnings and transcripts if you need to, and maybe avoid the fandom for the most part, it was not very pleasant when the show was airing, but overall, this series is so good and I do gladly recommend it to anyone looking to branch into horror. i think if you follow me and enjoy the same things I do you won't regret giving tma a shot ^^

Daisy Kidnapping Jon agenda: Rules
Jon figured out, far before Daisy, that it was easier to have rules. If X, then Y. When someone does this, you do that. As long as the rules are followed, you’d be safe. Safer, anyway.
He starts writing the Daisy rules a week and a day after she takes him, and never stops.
The old rules - for school, for his Gran, for Bournemouth - don't apply anymore. Daisy is in control now.
She might let Jon make decisions, but that is a privilege she can and will revoke. The only thing that keeps him free of that little locked room is Daisy’s good will.
It’s a large locked room, now.
The west-facing window isn’t as secure as Daisy assumes.
The old rules don’t apply. Daisy doesn’t care about how long his hair is, or if he meets her eyes while speaking.
No discussion of anything that contradicts Daisy’s cover story.
It’s best not to talk about his life before Daisy at all, if possible.
If he can’t avoid it, it’s best to imply. Leave empty spaces in the story where Daisy might fit.
Jon is a terrible liar. If the direct question ever comes up, he’s screwed.
Besides the forbidden subjects, talking is good. Questions even better. If he’s silent too long, Daisy gets agitated.
She doesn’t much care what Jon talks about - the latest documentary he watched, a debate about the use of force in policing, speculation about this or that neighbor’s life, complaints about coursework - as long as he isn’t quiet.
Specific situations have certain allowances. He isn’t required to speak much at all if he’s reading or studying. Watching television or a movie only requires occasional comment.
After a chase, he can do whatever he pleases
Jon’s impulsive decisions have consequences. Those consequences are Daisy.
He could probably live with that, except that the consequences mostly happen to other people.
Quoth Daisy, If he’s going to be an idiot, he’d better be an idiot with an exit plan.
Quoth Daisy, “if it matters that much to you, I’d rather you told me and let me help.”
Daisy isn’t human, however much she pretends for Jon. She doesn’t think like humans do.
No one human would have looked at Jonathon Sims and decided they wanted him.
She needs the Hunt, the way Jon needs food or water.
Humans are herd animals, gregarious and social, building social bonds and communities. Daisy is not. (Jon is not.)
At her best, she’s a pack-based hunter. She cares for her small, closed circle of people, and nobody else. There had been Calvin, the boy eaten by the beast, and her father. Now there's Jon.
If Daisy doesn’t have anyone, if she becomes a solitary predator (if Jon left her) she’ll become a monster.
As long as he doesn't think about it too much, everything can be fine. Daisy's his half-sister, and she loves him. There’s nothing wrong with his life.
Where would he even go, if Daisy didn't want him? His grandmother is dead. (She is dead, she is dead, she is dead, an endless echo of a scream, swallowed down.) He’ll never be able to reconcile with her. Daisy is all he has left.
'All he has left', as if there had ever been anyone else. He had been an unlikeable, annoying child, who demanded too much attention and gave back too little affection for the effort. His grandmother had loved him, dutifully, blood of her blood, flesh of her flesh. That didn’t mean she’d liked him.
Does he actually know that? Or is he re-writing his own past, trying to justify his attachment to the woman who kidnapped him? Maybe his Gran had wanted him. Maybe Jon is over-sensitive to the possibility of rejection, reading every negative emotion as a reflection of him.
Daisy’s never told him he’s too old for nightmares and that he needs to stop getting up in the middle of the night.
Daisy is not a good comparison for anything. There’s no one in the world like Daisy.
‘All he has left’, but does he even have Daisy? He still doesn’t understand why Daisy chose him. Why him? Why then? What had marked him out as the one she’d wanted? He had no assurance that she wouldn’t one day tire of him as abruptly as she’d once laid claim, and cast him out again
He should want that. The relationship between him and Daisy, it isn’t normal. Isn’t healthy.
The thought of losing her is terrifying.
He's going to die at Daisy's hands eventually. Until then, anything or anyone who wants to harm him will have to go through her first.

teen jon snippet
In the quiet dark, with no one but herself to conjure up an attitude for, Sasha understood whatever appeal sleeping in Daisy's bed held for Jon. She'd suffered far less than he had, but the whistle of Tim's nose on the inhale and the rumble of the formless sounds Martin made while he slept were a bright shield before thoughts of Prentiss, and of Gertrude decomposing all alone, in the dark.

writing updates
ok, in lieu of updates this morning here's a mega ramble about writing stuff
cult au and little archive are both ~5 chapters ahead on posting, teen jon has 3 unposted, completed chapters rn, the first of which will be up eventually today. fae au is something in the range of 4-7 chapters ahead as well
upcoming cult au: fallout, depression, some jonah, unethical therapeutic relationships (sit down fannibals not like that)
upcoming little archive: just. a lot of ongoing gerry and the gals drama. also jon being Adorable but that's a given. reaffirmation of best-friendship
upcoming teen jon: !!! an extremely fortuitous place to be picking it up, ft. a big summary of events by way of crime reporting and wikipedia. coming to terms with being kidnapped forever. school! changing mind about said coming to terms. terrible teenage decision making
fae au: several panic attacks and trauma responses. a touching conversation about finances. a partial and probably mostly unnoticeable reference to stag story, which you should all read. MELANIE!!! tearful conversations re: various terrible happenings
ALSO! vampire au route 2!! HOPEFULLY i still have time to reassess the ending of the next bit and get it close enough to the finish line that i can go ahead with my old tentative plan, which is 2 stories, 3 chapters, released today, saturday, and sunday
featuring: vampire circus
there's more but the vampire circus was so much fun to write i can't think of it. a fun oc bc i couldn't find anyone in a stranger statement who fit what i needed. sasha reaching heretofore unseen levels of deranged. a plot hook for potential rarest of pairs femslash. it's so fun, i'm going to be so sad if i have to put off posting
also having tentative progress: the jontim time travel au where helen drops jon in the s1 archives instead of the circus-era archives, lighthouse au, polychives, artefact storage, ttab. don't expect anything in the near future for most of them, but like. comments, asks, what have you about your faves obviously always help. cheers!

fic update: unless something changes drastically, I probably won't be back before Valentine's Day. I'm just now starting to get some of the sticking point chapters to shake out right (don't ask how many times I've rewritten chapter 117 of cult au after deciding I didn't like what I had half-finished)
