Stepping away from classic bolero/ranchera in favor of dreamy samba jazz and sensitive chamber folk, Natalia Lafourcade's latest album is one of her best yet, showing off her talents as a vocalist and songwriter by stripping back her compositions while keeping what's necessary as rich and lively as can be. De Todas las Flores' timeless beauty gives Lafourcade the chance to lean into the further corners of her sound without losing the romance and wonder she revels in.

De Todas las Flores is unlike anything Natalia Lafourcade has released before, and yet it sits so beautifully next to the many albums she has put out in the past two decades. It's a testament to her skills as a singer and songwriter, weaving in and out of the worlds of traditional Mexican folk in her Musas and Un Canto por México albums while albums on the fringes like Hasta la Raíz and Hu Hu Hu saw her playing in the realms of folk pop and artsy prog-pop respectively with the same amount of passion and love put into it all, De Todas las Flores another entry into her impeccable discography that takes little influence from what she does before and instead follows the path paved by vocal jazz and gentle singer/songwriter music years ago, still holding her Latin influences dear but incorporating them into new genre contexts and giving them a lavish treatment of satiny strings and graceful horns. The results are nothing short of spectacular, pushing Lafourcade into unfamiliar territory and learning just how vivid a world she can build. As the album oscillates between jazz-infused folk tunes and lonely singer/songwriter laments, De Todas las Flores finds its core not in the usual bright and colorful Lafourcade energy, but in her raw skills as a performer and writer, taking on the same kind of romantic doom of both classic Spanish folk records (think Chavela Vargas and Violeta Parra and beloved American soul/jazz singers in ways only a contemporary artist like her can do, her intimate knowledge of what has made these older generations of artist stick around for so long allowing her to do the same on tracks like Pasan los días and Pajarito colibrí, her intermingling of deep heartache with the love that preceded it making for some of the most well-written and beautifully performed songs from anyone this entire year while managing to stay surprisingly reserved and laid-back for someone with a voice so radiant. The jazzier tracks tend to pull from the worlds of samba and bolero to push the songs forward without letting go of their Latin roots, the title track and Mi manera de querer similarly mysterious but separated by how they take advantage of samba's push on the front end of the beat to keep the song moving forward even as Lafourcade's voice and guitar work seems to be drifting right past you, part of De Todas las Flores' beauty found in how you can't capture it all in a single listen. You'll notice different things on repeat listens - the way Marc Ribot's electric guitar works a smooth countermelody to Lafourcade's singing on El lugar correcto or the soft ocean waves swirling in the background of Pasan los días - and gain an even greater appreciation for Lafourcade's magnificent songcraft through it, her refusal to let you soak it all up in one go ensuring De Todas las Flores stays right at the front of your mind long after you've finished listening to it. Few albums can balance pure elegance with true musical brilliance, but Lafourcade blends her genres and tells her stories with what seems like the ease and calm of someone whose been doing it for a thousand lifetimes. It's this eternality to De Todas las Flores Lafourcade uses to breathe easy across these 12 songs and still create an engaging artistic experience - the album may move slow, but its strength never wavers, largely due to the magnificent compositional work by Lafourcade and string arranger Emiliano Dorantes. The latter's touches are integral to giving depth and a dark streak to the sweeter sound of Lafourcade's voice and brisk classical guitar work, setting the stage in the album's first moments with the heavenly minute and a half that opens up Vine solita and establishes De Todas las Flores' dark and sensitive sound, but even his lighter additions are absolutely essential: Llévame viento completely earns its abstract musings on isolation and desire when the slightest touch of violin hovers in the background, and the marvelous finale Que te vaya bonito Nicolás knows when to make space for just Lafourcade and her guitar and when to let the other elements wash over you like the last flashes of color in a sunset just before it dips below the horizon, an absolutely heartbreaking finale piece with the gorgeous instrumentation to match. Still, the album has a few tricks up its sleeve you might not expect from someone like Lafourcade, making the addition of a bossa nova jam that melts into an ambient surfy finish in the form of Canta la arena or María la Curandera's hypnotic offbeat grooves and wah guitar on that reminds me of a restless reggae tune more than anything else that much more impressive when it doesn't clash with the delicate, almost regal tone of the surrounding tracks even a bit, De Todas las Flores' internally driven narratives incentivizing Lafourcade to hold back but still explore as much of herself and her music as she can. A lesser talent couldn't have handled songs this slow and this layered, but Lafourcade is so comfortable and confident in her craft you won't even realize an hour has passed when the album comes to a close. Though De Todas las Flores' beauty is a familiar one, Natalia Lafourcade does more with this heavenly sound than anyone else in years, incorporating ideas from her many years writing and recording in traditional Latin musical styles into the classic sound of 40's and 50's vocal jazz and string-laden folk with an understanding of what makes each of them special and how they'll interact with one another on a larger scale - if you ever wondered what it'd sound like if bolero came into contact with sensual American jazz, Caminar bonito brings that to life better than anything I've heard before. She's always been a gifted songwriter and brilliant musician, but De Todas las Flores truly is the peak of her talents thus far, taking everything she's done in the Musas and Un Canto por México albums over the past few years and planting their seeds in a new, heavier soil, one where the roots dig deeper and the emotions hang with more drama and conviction than ever before. There isn't a moment where Lafourcade's magic fades, and that's all De Todas las Flores needs to reach such absolute perfection.
