The wedding I photographed (Vancouver wedding photographers) was in De Winton. De Winton is a hamlet in southern Alberta, Canada within the Foothills County. It is located just south of the City of Calgary and west of Highway 2A. De Winton is located within Census Division No. 6. A variant name is Dewinton. The village has the name of Francis de Winton, a British army officer.

DR. HINSHAW AND 230 PRESS CONFERENCES LATER….

Dr. Hinshaw, this modest, steady as she goes woman from Camrose, Alberta, is giving her last regularly scheduled press conference today. Apparently, she has delivered over 230 of these since the beginning of the pandemic. Imagine standing before the press during a televised conference to deliver the week’s numbers of infections, hospitalizations, and deaths, 230 times. And doing it every single time with genuine grace and empathy, answering question after question with endless patience, and demonstrating unfailing respect for every single other human being involved in the work of managing this marathon for the past year and a half. Just imagine doing that.

Today’s press conference is to be her last regularly scheduled one because, thanks to the vaccination program, the numbers she has been reporting on these past many months are low enough that regular reporting is no longer worthwhile. She said if it becomes necessary, she will be back on the podium. May that never become necessary.

This woman deserves an epic sabbatical. If I was planning it for her, it would begin with several quiet days hidden away in the nearest to be secured private retreat with a pool. It must be cool, green, sweet smelling, and quiet, and it must have several different places to sit, so that if she wants to be in the sun, she can be in the sun, and if she wants to be in the shade she can be in the shade. This retreat would also offer several different kinds of chairs so she can choose the one that suits her best at any given moment. And these chairs must be the most comfortable chairs ever made, because this woman deserves to sit and do nothing for as long as she likes.

And then there would be food. There would be the most delectable Alberta strawberries (like the ones grown by Mia in DeWinton I just saw a picture of this week) and B.C. cherries and chocolate cake from one of Calgary’s amazing gourmet bakers and Pinocchio ice-cream from Edmonton (gotta spread the love), and, if Dr. Hinshaw likes wine, well, our Alberta wine merchants should be selecting the finest B.C. wines in their collection and personally delivering them to the gate of Dr. Hinshaw’s retreat. I would personally bring her a nice chilled rose for these hot days.

This sabbatical would also include anyone with whom Dr. Hinshaw desires to spend time with. She may wish to be alone, but my guess is she would want to share the pleasures of this highly deserved rest with all of the thousands of other medical professionals she continually recognized as being equally integral to the medical management of the pandemic. This may not be practical, so perhaps a random draw? Or perhaps she would insist that each one take their turn spending time in this retreat. I can see Dr. Hinshaw doing that, she strikes me as an incredibly fair and generous woman who would perhaps be uncomfortable with too much of a good thing. She would not eat all the strawberries and cherries and cake and ice cream. She would probably not drink all the wine either. More likely, she would want to share.

I was going to keep planning this sabbatical for Dr. Hinshaw. It would have included a sandy beach and turquoise ocean, and more delicious food. But the more I think about it, the more I feel she would not want anything too extravagant, she strikes me as a very humble person, with an appreciation for simplicity.

So I will stop here, and just send out the vibes that she will, after today’s conference, at least find herself in that private retreat for a few days. If I could stop by to say hello, I would tell her how very much I appreciated her efforts, how very lucky I believe we have all been to have been guided by her intelligent and sensible advice, and that I hope she is able to continue to use her skills on behalf of the rest of us for as long as she wishes.

As summer heats up, I’m going to cool down Takhuk for a couple of months. I wish you all wonderful reunions with family and friends as we slowly return to some version of our pre-pandemic lives.

Before I go, a comment on the tragic news related to residential schools. I learned years ago that my great-grandfather was involved in the construction of the original Old Sun Indian Residential School on the Siksika Reserve. (He and my great-grandmother actually lived on the Siksika reserve for a few years, while my great-grandfather contracted with the Anglican church to construct numerous buildings on the reserve, including the Indian hospital). When the original residential school on the Siksika reserve burned down, it was replaced with a large brick building which still stands and has for decades been used as the site of the Siksika people’s Old Sun Community College. I have visited this college, perused it’s library, gone on to the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park where there is an outstanding museum and opportunities to walk the land where thousands of indigenous people gathered to follow the proceedings of the Treaty 7 negotiations conducted between indigenous leaders and representatives of the Canadian government. All around the hills of this area are cemeteries. Nearby one of them is the gravesite of Chief Crowfoot. Perhaps a visit to these places is one way we can express our condolences and show our respect to our indigenous neighbours.

Parliament of Uganda has pledged to support Darius Wasswa Nuwagira, a toddler whose genitals were bitten off by a dog last year.

Making the commitment was at Sunday Vision’s 6th twins festival, Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, who was the chief guest at the event, said she will work with President Yoweri Museveni to ensure that Wasswa gets the treatment he needs.

Police on Thursday night foiled an attempt by UPDF soldiers to fleece Indian investors of 'taxes'. The incident occurred at around 1:30pm at Dewinton Drive opposite Spear House. The business which according to available information is a workshop for Indian investors dealing in computers is registered as Mitsumi Computer garage Ltd. According to a statement released by the deputy army spokesperson, Lt Col Deo Akiiki, two UPDF soldiers who were allegedly involved in the ploy have been arrested. One of them has been identified as Corporal Isoke. Three other suspects purportedly working with the tax collection body Uganda Revenue Authority
