POLL: Olicity Fandom’s Top Arrow Episodes

Hey everyone! As we come up to the last episode of Arrow, we’re trying to figure out WHAT ARE THE DEFINITIVE FAVORITE EPISODES of Arrow/Olicity fandom?

The results of this poll will be used to determine the next couple months’ Coordinated Episode Rewatch schedule on the Olicity Discord server (want to know more about this and join in? READ MORE HERE and HERE).

Because here’s the thing...we hold WEEKLY coordinated group rewatches (learn more here), and while we usually watch episodes in chronological order (while skipping universally disliked episodes 😉), we’re currently at episode 4x16 (”Broken Hearts”) and we just reeeeally didn’t feel in the mood to watch that this week, or the rest of season 4, going into season 5. These next couple months are going to be heartbreaking enough.

INSTEAD, over the next couple months we will be doing something different to commemorate the ending of Arrow: we’re going to be watching the fandom’s TOP FAVORITE ARROW EPISODES (as voted on by you in this poll).

To create this poll, I asked the Olicity Discord members to list their top 20 Arrow episodes of all time. (IT WAS VERY PAINFUL AND WE ALL KIND OF DIED A LITTLE). Afterward, I tallied the results and came up with 26 top episodes, which are the choices presented in this poll. Now we need YOU to help us narrow it down to THE FANDOM’S TOP 15 EPISODES OF ALL TIME.

After calming down from my happiness following the finale I think its time to finally say goodbye to the hero that is Felicity Smoak.

Like Oliver, my only regret is that I didn’t have more time to love her. I only found Arrow in the summer before season 7 but I found it at exactly the right time. I was a mess that Lucifer had ended, and I wanted to find a new ship, but I found so much more than that.

When I found Arrow I was getting ready to begin University. I was considering wearing make up every day, wearing contact lenses instead of glasses, buying a whole new wardrobe. In other words I wanted to become someone else, someone that I wasn’t.

And then I found Felicity Smoak. She was happy to take the profile of “geek” and make it beautiful. She was smart, and a leader, and not scared to be either. She couldn’t cook, she put her foot in her mouth, she thought out loud and she made accidental innuendo. She wasn’t just the comedy factor. She wasn’t just a damsel in distress, love interest that got the guy (even when everyone was screaming a girl like her never could). Felicity Smoak was a hero, a partner and a strong woman with agency.

Flashforward a couple of months and I was dressed for university in a Smoak Tech jumper with my hair in a ponytail and glasses on. And I didn’t feel so bad when I looked in the mirror on the way out the door.

But Felicity didn’t just bring me that bit of confidence. She brought my sister and I that much closer. Speedy and I now have “our own language” according to our family. We stayed up for one live watch together and got to see the pregnancy announcement we were hoping for. We spoiled episodes and left notes for the other to prepare themselves appropriately. We were at a hockey match when Emily announced she wasn’t coming back and from one look, and Speedy telling me to sit down, I knew what was coming. For a year we have laughed, cried and cheered together and I will forever be thankful for those memories.

The final blessing Felicity brought me was my amazing discord Famdom. I don’t know how I would have survived the last few weeks without all of you and I look forward to our continued rewatches!

So for now, if this is the end, goodbye Felicity Smoak I hope you enjoy your happiness with your husband, knowing that your tech changed the world and your children will continue to keep it safe. If it isn’t, and I really hope it isn’t, I’ll see you soon. I love you more than the freaking universe.

Happy Mancrush Monday

Sorry I missed the last two Mondays, but I’m back with the final installment for season 2 of Mancrush Monday, Olicity Edition, featuring episodes 2x14 to 2x23.  For those who don’t know, these posts are gifs of Oliver with captions that focus on fashion (if he’s wearing anything ;)) and the Olicity moments.  All the thanks in the world to @xspeedytrashx for suggesting my silly posts be a series. :)

The banter and fun (and most of the shirtlessness) of the previous season 2 episodes came to an abrupt halt when the TPTB decided to slow their roll on Olicity.  In order to do that, Olicity scenes were limited because the natural chemistry can’t be denied when they are in close proximity to each other. 

A sparring session leads to everyone talking about the scars they have.  We learn that out of all of Oliver’s scars, none were caused by a grenade and  Felicity’s only scar came from having her wisdom teeth removed.  Oliver is wearing pants in this scene, like we care lol.  

Comfortably chic in his coat and jeans, Oliver’s panties got in a twist when he saw Felicity working out in stretchy, thus skintight, yoga pants and cute top.  

Oliver comes across as brusque and borderline judgmental in this scene.  But if you look closely, the arched eyebrow and the fact he literally couldn’t take his eyes off of her give away that the emotion coursing through him wasn’t anger. ;)

In the Arrow suit, hood down, Oliver was going to stay in the bunker to help but Felicity sassed him right into that awkward and awful Lance family dinner.  TBH, it’s what he deserved.  #sorrynotsorry

Uh-oh he’s got angry face.  Only one person who can help with that and he can find her in his phone without even looking.  We’ll have a better look at his navy peacoat in the next gif.  For now, just admire the chiseled jawline. 

Cloaked in his navy blue peacoat and broodiness, Oliver takes a moment to tell wifey that he plans to face a Mirakuru-enhanced Slade all by himself without any backup.  Obviously, Felicity (like the rest of us) realize that is a dumb idea.

Again on the phone with wifey.  Oliver’s outgoing call history:  Felicity, Felicity, Felicity, Felicity, Felicity, Thea, Felicity, Felicity, Felicity, Felicity, Felicity............ This is the look I prefer to see when Oliver works with the police. Cause dayum.

Oliver’s first instinct is always to protect Felicity.  It’s reflexive and as natural as breathing to him.  He’s looking heroically badass in his leather jacket and jeans as he flips them over the railing (very fortuitous that Felicity wasn’t wearing one of her trademark skirts or dresses -- Slade would have gotten an eyeful) :P

Damn, our OTP looks hawt in their all black, breaking and entering, we’re gonna blow up a building, outfits.  Oliver’s gorgeous face is incredulous when Felicity tells him she didn’t think he would go along with her plan.  As if that boy wouldn’t do anything she asked and he can’t believe she doesn’t know that lol.

Oliver’s spidey (arrow-y?) senses were tingling that bae was in trouble.  It makes me laugh that Oliver came right at the guard, no stealth, no sneaking up on him,  and dude still didn’t see that punch coming.  How fast was Oliver moving for that to happen?  In their matching black leather jackets and gloves, Olicity could’ve blown up the building with their fiery intensity and explosive chemistry.

He may look like a regular (albeit very attractive) human in his business suit but it takes a superhero to stab themselves with a large dose of Lidocaine in their busted knee so they can go about their day.  Felicity, who we know has a fear of needles (all pointy things really), watches in horror and then disgust. Same, girl.

Oliver dressed in a somber black suit and tie to attend his mother’s funeral, but instead went to be alone with his dark thoughts in his other secret lair.  Leave it to our broody boy to have a secondary secret lair.  TBH, it’s actually pretty smart since the primary lair isn’t that secret. :/   But there is nowhere on earth where he could go Felicity can’t find him and there is never a time when she won’t try to encourage him to find another way.  

Our stubborn sacrificial lamb remains set on his suicide mission to stop Slade.  Felicity reluctantly lets go of his hand but she isn’t going to let him go too far.

When encouragement doesn’t work, there’s always a tranq dart. 

Felicity and Diggle save Oliver so he can fight another day and another way.  I know this isn’t technically an Olicity scene but Oliver deciding not to go it alone and who he chooses to have by his side in the end is monumental.  This is one of my all-time favorite lines from the show and my mantra to the Arrow writers.

Things go sideways (literally) and Felicity is injured.  Rather than have the strong and able-bodied member of OTA carry her to safety, Oliver and his busted knee hand his bow to Dig and hoists Felicity into his arms.  I love the aesthetics of this but logically it wasn’t the smartest move.  Here we see Oliver’s decision-making process and internal dialogue lol.  

I’m reaallly nostalgic right now for the old Arrow suit and the mask.  The city is burning but these two are on fire as they walk together in battle.

Even at his lowest points, when he doesn’t believe in himself and he isn’t sure of anything, he hangs on for dear life to every word that Felicity Smoak speaks.  Her words break through the walls of self-doubt and fear to the hero within.

Many fans have stated that they believe Oliver realized he was in love with Felicity when they hugged after her epic ‘you are not done fighting’ speech.  Me personally, I think Oliver was aware of his feelings long before then but did his level best to suppress them, ignore them, beat them down with a stick and self-loathing into the darkness.  But this amazing woman’s kindness, generosity, compassion, wit, and trust brought him and his feelings into the light where he was struggling to hold them back.  

This is such an underrated Olicity scene, imho.  Felicity worries that Blood has set a trap for her boys.  She tells Oliver and Dig she is gonna be really pissed if they don’t come back.  The man who was more than willing to die for the past few weeks not only gives her a smile but also a reassuring shoulder squeeze because now he wants to come back and more importantly, believes he will.

There’s something about Oliver being in the suit while returning to the darkened foyer of his childhood home with Felicity.  Maybe it’s that his past, present, and future are all colliding at once.  I remember I got goosebumps the first time I saw it because everything about this scene--the music, lighting, camera angles, close ups- told me something big was going to happen.  I had no idea how big lol.

Exhibit A of one of the close-ups.  He takes a moment to just soak her in.  She has inspired him to want to live.  To embrace his humanity and have a life filled with love.  But the city needs saving and he still holds wellsprings of guilt within his heart.  This is always Oliver’s struggle within himself.  

Eyes shining with emotion, expression earnest, Oliver lets go of his internal struggle over his feelings as those three little words slip through his lips.  

I adore this kiss.  I’m fine that they didn’t use it because honestly after that sincerely whispered ‘I love you’ they really didn’t need it to sell the “ruse.”  With the hood down and mask off but still in the suit, this was Oliver’s dual identity coming together for one brief moment because all of him loves Felicity Smoak. 

Talk about unthinkable...that these two wouldn’t end up together.  Even though Oliver wasn’t quite ready to follow-up on the admission of his feelings to Felicity in the light of day, his heart eyes and adoring expression give him away.  

I said on Discord during the re-watch yesterday that I really didn’t like this scene when it first aired because I wanted them to kiss but over the years, I have come to appreciate the aesthetics. <3

In the last gif, Felicity says ‘let’s go home’ and Oliver nods with that soft smile he only has for her.  I made a header about Olicity and the concept of home when Oliver returned from prison in 7x08. I think it was just as true then as it is now. <3

Do u think Olicity will be ok this season? I only worry cause often times when Felicity is angry with Oliver she can almost be cruel (I don't want to be a woman you love) or walks away without talking through their issues. I know that was pre-marriage but I just hate seeing Oliver hurt after he's been through so much. But so has Felicity just in different ways. Honestly Felicity has every right to be upset. I dunno I just feel conflicted and worried cause I don't want to see them break up.

Ok.

This will be the only post I respond to in regards to the obscene and ludicrous possibility of Olicity separating/divorcing.

Honey, this fandom (namely @jbuffyangel @callistawolf @dmichellewrites and @hopedreamlovepray @dust2dust34 ) should have taught you better (in terms of Olicity) than to worry about a separation occurring now.

See, the majority TV couples who are ‘fated’, ‘star crossed’, ‘meant to be’, ‘written in the stars’, ‘soul mates and true loves’ etc, go through at LEAST 1 trial of separation. 9 out of 10, have 2 or 3 and sometimes 4. The separation often comes with new love interests and story lines that aren’t exclusive to each other. It’s an old and very used TV trope and Olicity have been there, done that, worn the T-shirt.

I find it so odd that the majority fandom think that, once a couple get it right, they cease to go through mishaps or hurts or relationship issues. If a couple hit a stumbling block, for some reason it means, break-up. Even the couples who are so clearly head over heels for each other that the world could burn and they wouldn’t notice, can have things happen between them that causes hurt, tension or unpleasant reprisals. In fact, the deeper their love, the more devastating the hurt can be.

And Olicity’s is a whopper.

But you know what’s the BEST? Seeing that hurt, heal. You know what’s satisfying? When a showrunner decides to actually spend time and focus on the main couple’s lives so that it doesn’t get magically and superficially fixed in one episode and that doesn’t happen with a couple that’s destined to repeat their break ups.

All good things to those who wait.

So either, a) you’re a hater and trying to spread a little discord or b) you genuinely worry over every bump in the road, which has to be exhausting for you.

If it’s a, you aren’t my first.

If it’s b, then I must ask why every little hint of angst or emotional upset, the integration of moral turpitude, the possibility of danger, even an argument, makes you worry like this? Olicity aren’t a weak couple, unlike many other TV couples. Tiffs, disputes, grief, heartache and heartbreak do not threaten the strong couples the way you are worried it will.

Olicity. Are. Unbreakable.

But they can be hurt the most by each other.

You also seem to favour one half of the couple over the other so - Oliver over Felicity - so, if your aren’t a hater, bad. They’ve both suffered, but Oliver’s suffering was by his own making. There have been multiple interviews on it: Oliver didn’t involve Felicity in his decision because he knew she’d change his mind and he didn’t see a way around the problem.

Now, he’ll never know if she could have, if she did.

If you are a hater, you’re going to loathe the truth in what I’m about to tell you.

This current story line in Arrow, is very literally about two people who miss each other, who need each other, who are working together whilst apart and who love each other so much that everything they’re doing in the show, revolves around the other.

Felicity is now gunning for Diaz and not just because he attacked her in her own home: it’s for Oliver. It’s to honour his sacrifice, like she said. And it’s to ensure that Oliver will be able to come home one day SOON, which she also said. It’s to give him some peace of mind whilst helpless in jail. It’s to give her some peace of mind because… Oliver’s sacrifice included her. She needs to combat that.

I don’t include William in the sacrifice: Oliver ensured William would have Felicity. Felicity wasn’t given the luxury of a loved one. 

Or good friends.

She’s alone: like Oliver.

It was a beyond hard/difficult situation.

Oliver’s gunning for Diaz because Diaz hurt Felicity.

He was keeping his head down, defending himself and staying out of the picture. The moment his wife walks in, injured but alive - the moment she tells him her plans and that, after his decision, he really can’t decide how to keep her safe especially since his decisions have failed in that regard - he starts to fight back too: he starts his own investigation into finding Diaz.

This is not a couple apart. It’s a couple together.

A couple who both have trauma/PTSD, who have been hurt, who are lonely and alone, who have no friends to count on, who are aching to be home and home is each other.

They’re a couple that realised something: one half of the couple knows that his decision was fucking BAD. The other half is reeling from the decision. Now they’re both acting towards the same goal.

Felicity knows that Oliver sacrificed her to keep her safe. However, a) it didn’t work (BIG TIME) and b) how can any wife/husband be okay with spending the rest of their days without their other half and c) especially when, their other made that choice without you.

This is what’s going to happen.

Currently, Olicity are paralleling each other and I think it will continue for a while. I already see… three themes, I think, circling around them (don’t quote me on this).

Redemption. Revenge. Reunion.

Felicity, right now, is as focused on revenge as she is determined to free her husband. She has a lot stored up on this front, so who knows when she’ll stop.

Oliver’s focus is on the man threatening his family.

But once Oliver gets out - I’m currently going with a Shawshank redemption style escape - it’s going to change.

I see Oliver becoming obsessed with revenge and if not revenge, redemption. Or redemption and revenge.

This includes Olicity. You see, when he gets back- sure, we’ll get some heavy emotional scenes, kisses, sex and so on and so forth and while sex can heal, these two will have to face the truth of the matter.

Felicity once said, ‘I’m glue, baby’. She meant it.

While Oliver has, over and over again, told Felicity that she is his all end and be all, his always and forever, he hasn’t convinced her that he’s glue too.

So, they’re married. They’re a team. But at any moment, Felicity will now be waiting for Oliver to make a decision that ends in her being alone again… until the next time. And the time after.

Remember when they broke up in 4.16? And the theme between them in S5? And their wedding vows in 6.08? Felicity decided that being with him and making the ultimate commitment, was worth the possibility of loosing Oliver after the fact.

So, she’s not going to leave him over this. She’s going to be angry at him; he’s hurt her. And he sees/knows that. And she’s missed him and he’s been injured and they’re both traumatised. It’ll be a mix of emotions and many of them won’t be happy and fluffy. It’ll be angsty and passionate as heck and that’s GOOD. It speaks of the depth of their love.

Oliver now needs to prove to Felicity that he’s glue too.

I said revenge might be a theme between them: when Oliver returns to her, what if she doesn’t stop her quest? What if he joins her on it? What if she stops and he starts? Is it a good thing? A bad thing? How do they help each other?

I said reunion will be a theme between them: there are all sorts of reunions. Physical, emotional, moral. Hearts and minds and body’s. They’ll have more than one. It’s coming.

I said redemption because Oliver was once a man who crossed off names in a book after killing their faces. My hope is that this season ends with Star City’s acceptance and love of him, the hero of the city.

And he’ll never be able to do that without Felicity, as it has been since season 2.

They are interwoven and Season 7 is taking it a step further. The flash forwards and present story line are centred around Olicity, which is what happens with THE couple of a show that has not only earned their place but IS part of its foundation.

I predict that you will need chocolate… copious amounts of alcohol. Fandom friends. Why; because this will hurt in all the best ways and some upsetting ones. This is not angst for the sake of angst. This is angst generated because this couple is worthy of it.

Because they’ll be even stronger for it afterwards, SOMEHOW.

But it’s going to take time. I won’t be surprised if it takes the majority of the season for them to fully figure it out… there might even be two or three love scenes to symbolise that, who knows?

The are never again ‘breaking up’. This isn’t high school. This isn’t a relationship where one cheats on the other and two seasons later, they return to each other. This isn’t a lacklustre romance. This is a MARRIAGE.

A marriage between two heroes. Their issues will be bigger than a normal couples.

We get to watch them solve these issues the right way.

Or you can completely ignore this. I might be wrong… but I don’t think I am this time.

Confessions

I have stopped watching the show ever since Emily announced she’s leaving and they revealed the Big Bad. Honestly, I was already hurt by the fact that we’ll get 10 episodes next season just to support the other DC shows so when Emily decided not to be in Season 8 I started to pull back. I can’t help but feel disconnected. I tried really hard to enjoy these episodes and to stay in the moment but the writers do not make it easy, do they?

For me, Season 7 ended the moment Oliver left Slabside. If you ask me, Beth and her writers did a great job with the prison arc. The episodes were focused on Oliver and Felicity who were really badass both together and alone. Also, they were a real couple, focused on coming back to each other and they delivered some of the most emotional and stunning scenes we have seen on Arrow. 

But the rest of the season has been so damn UNINSPIRING that it would take the best and most talented fic authors in our amazing fandom to fix it. It’s a mess. It lacks originality (Star City turning on Oliver again), threatening villains (Emiko, really?) and above all emotional depth (having Tommy back in one ep merely emphasizes the problem). Not to mention the horrible secondary characters that had already ruined Season 6. It’s lackluster and unimaginative. And I’m being polite here.

Anyway, I digress. I’ll keep the first 7 episodes in my heart as well as our beautiful daughter Mia, SmoakNHawke and baby OTA. I will probably binge-watch the final episodes at some point but I don’t know when. This clusterf*ck was not what I had in mind for Felicity Smoak’s journey. She deserved to be appreciated, Oliver Queen deserved to live his life without sacrifice, their family deserved to be happy and we definitely deserved better than that after 7 years.
