Cornwall’s Random Card of the Day #493: Master of the Pearl Trident
Tumblr media
Featuring Yet Another Merfolk Lord.
Master of the Pearl Trident is a rare from Magic 2013, seen here in its Duel Deck: Mefolk vs Goblins printing. This card is kind of a mix of the two merfolk from Alpha: Merfolk of the Pearl Trident(thus the name) and Lord of Atlantis, which boosted all Merfolk by +1/+1 and gave them islandwalk(not just yours, everyone’s, they made cards DIFFERENT back then). This is just another merfolk lord, and as I have mentioned above, there are quite a few. I this one was like the fifth. It helped that merfolk was blue’s characteristic race, but I think they had more lords at 2 mana than fucking GOBLINS, red’s characteristic race, and one much more prone to weenie decks.
So, what gives? Well, I think the fact that the merfolk deck was well performing and remembered from Alpha times did a lot, plus WotC’s bias towards blue in general, especially in the earlier years. Despite it, to my knowledge, never being a tournament-viable deck, some folk just love to go wide and fast with dudes from below the waves. It helps that merfolk is blue’s most enduring characteristic race, even surviving a dark period where the creative team tried to kill them all off. Magic players just like em.
Oh, and to answer the question as to why this was printed instead of Lord of Atlantis, well, I don’t know if he was on the reserve list or not, but by this time they’d decided to have most cards only boost your own cards, so this almost-but-not-quite-functional-reprint was required.

Mark Ghostfire was reprinted in Duel Decks: Merfolk vs. Goblins. In your article today you said it hadn't been reprinted.
At the start of the first article in the series, I said I was talking about “pre-prints” in sets with new content as it could be “the first place it was printed”.

Do you have any speculation for the merfolk vs goblin duel decks?
The Merfolk half is probably going to be, if not Ixalan heavy, then at least Ixalan leaning. Though this might not be enough to push it into green, that does mean it’ll push towards evasive creatures. Expect River Sneak, Shaper Apprentice, that sort of thing. Merfolk are currently being represented as a sneaky, evasive tribe, because you really can’t make the Merfolk deck be all lords. That said, expect at least one lord. Perhaps something from Rivals, but possibly Merrow Reejery... Actually, yeah. He’s a $4.50 uncommon. Absolutely expect Merrow Reejery.  Maybe a Cursecatcher, too.  There’s a few uncommon Merfolk with decent price tags, so expect enough of them that the price of the deck winds up being a bit more than market value (until adjusted for its own supply, of course.)
For goblins, that’s a harder question. We already had a vs goblins deck, and it seems like a new one would be going out of its way to not overlap. The old one was a pretty good mix of aggro, tokens, and burn, all the things that make goblins goblins... So this could really be anything. I’d say the goblins would probably lean toward all-in Dominaria, but the significant majority of the Elves vs Goblins Duel Deck was Dominarian anyway.  Only seven of that deck’s goblins were from elsewhere. We could see a lot of options. Along similar lines to the Merfolk, Goblin Lackey is the only uncommon goblin in real need of a reprint, but there’s a few moderately costed rares that would be nice to see, like Goblin Chieftain and myself. If they really wanted to pull out the stops, they could shove a single Goblin Guide in there, but that would eat up most of the deck’s potential value, so probably not. I really have no idea what they’re going to do with the goblin deck, but if there’s one card I’d say just should be in there, it’s Goblin Lackey.
TL;DR: Merfolk deck will be evasion heavy and include some uncommons that go in competitive merfolk deck. Goblin deck is anybody’s guess, because they already did a goblin deck once and it’s going to be hard for this one to be different while still being a goblin duel deck.

So care to share thoughts on the Merfolk vs Goblins duel decks? I don't know if you've seen the decklist or not yet.
Had to look over the deck lists. Ok, so for $26.99, you kinda get what you pay for, but not really. I’m using Starcity, and even then, prices for the cards I am looking at will drop.Next, this just feels like they looked at the tribes and went. We need two face cards, and we need them to be tribes. We should have had Krenko as the face, with the new mono blue merfolk as the face as well. New art and foil, would have helped a ton. Also, can we just make the “Dual decks” the New Premium decks? I mean these new dual decks cost more. Just price this thing at $499.99 and make the whole thing foil. These decks lack depth. and it seems that Goblins just do better. Also, can we just stop throwing fluff into these decks. Like Battle Squadron, Goblin Tunneler, and Goblin Goon don’t need to be in here. Put in more Tarfire’s, and another Brittle Effigy. Merfolk could have used a Sage’s Dowsing, and perhaps the new Compass for some flavor. We could get rid of Aquitect’s Will. All in all this is really a niche thing, and will make some players happy.Still, these decks don’t have to be a Modern Power house, but it would help greatly if they were built with more concise play. Thanks for the ask!

There are three pieces of Steve’s work being reprinted in Iconic Masters but since I number his releases chronologically I have to consider the possibility that he may have cards in Duel Decks: Merfolk vs Goblins.
Personally I don’t feel Steve has had his work appear on any cards that are likely to see reprinting in this product.  It would be awesome to see him give an alternate illustration to an existing card, especially the marquee foil.
I don’t know what to think about Explorers of Ixalan since Steve had no work in the main set...
I don’t expect to see Chosen of Markov in From the Vault: Transform though... but, again... new art.  Steve has done FTV alternate art twice.  It is time.
Unstable.  If Steve was not tapped for his high quality yet irreverent work for this product then I don’t know what to think about the current state of WotC art direction...
Anyway, there is a lot of product coming out in a five week span.   Should be fun to watch it all unfold...

SET SYMBOLS!!!
I was heading over to the Coming Soon page for MtG products, just to check when Unstable was releasing, and I was met with this!  So let’s take a look at ‘em, left to right, top to bottom:
Ixalan Love that we’re using a compass rose here for Ixalan.  Not only does it fit the pirate high-seas aspect, but also the exploration aspect of Ixalan as well.  Can’t fit the dinos, but oh well.  Speaking of exploration--
Explorers of Ixalan Avast!  It be a ship wheel for ye out-o’-the-box multiplayer experience!  As a side note, I hope we get side products for settings more often.  I hope this one does well.
Rivals of Ixalan Is it a gate to the lost city?  Is it a crest?  Is it a closeup of the compass rose?  Probably all of the above!  We’ll just have to wait and see if it has any story significance.
Commander 2017 Four tribes, one shield.  Yeah, nothing big to note here.  I mean it kinda looks like a skull/head sorta, though I’m probably just reading too much into it.
Merfolk vs Goblins Are axes really a goblin thing?  We have the trident on the left, but axes?  I thought a dagger or shanking weapon would serve better, but oh well.
Iconic Masters It actually looks like the art from Pristine Talisman.  Foreshadowing, or coincidence?  You decide!
UNSTABLE I’ll be damned if that isn’t an acorn in that wrench.  Like holy shit we’re finally getting squirrels back in magic! :D

Hi Mark! Just a little FYI regarding your latest article on Future Sight designs, Ghostfire was already reprinted in Duel Decks: Merfolk vs Goblins, although I don't know if you were counting only premier sets. Have a great day!
I wasn’t counting all-reprints sets.
