#dunmeshi as a dnd party
Note
a while back in the news headlines that firefox recommends to you on the new tab, it showed me a kotaku article or smth that was called smth like "dungeon meshi is the cooking anime dungeons and dragons fans deserve." closest ive ever been to throwing my computer in a lake tbh
god okay to be COMPLETELY fair, it's clear that Kui is drawing from the DnD oeuvre, from some of the old-fashioned character tropes she's drawing on, the specific selection of races to populate the main setting (Humans, Elves, Gnomes, Halflings, Dwarves, and Half-Elves) are almost the exact lineup as the 3.5finder core rulebooks, missing only half-orcs, and of course to specifically focus on a mixed-class party venturing deep into a dungeon. It's just that that's got some distance from the MODERN DnD culture which is more focused on aboveground stuff, has its own memes and cultures, as well as a lot of the stuff that 5e bumped to core like Warlocks, Dragonborn, and Tieflings. Additionally, we can see from her Elves In Other Fiction sketches that she specifically has played some Pathfinder adventure paths! Which is incredibly based.
Anyway saying Dunmeshi is DnD inspired is not strictly wrong, but it's less Dimension 20 and more Order of the Stick.

Rereading Dungeon Meshi and it's such an interesting series in how it's a deeply gamic story, but often the way it deploys game logic will be in ways that's rare to see in actual games. I think a lot about chapter 5, the one where Chilchuck really gets the spotlight for the first time.
Tumblr media
This chapter does a lot to drive home the importance of party comp in this setting. Like at this point we've already seen Laios, Marcille, and Senshi be competent and useful in their own roles as fighters, mage/healer, and dungeon survivalists, but here's where we get to see why a thief archetype is important for a party to have.
Tumblr media
It's super cool to see all the thief shit Chil needs to do to keep the party from dying badly from traps, but most games, especially multiplayer ones tend not to have elaborate digressions about trap disarmament.
Like sure lockpicking mini games are everywhere and some older crpgs like the early bioware games will have bits where you have to click on a bunch of traps on the ground, but any adventure game with combat where another gameplay approach, like stealth or something, isn't the main focus will tend to subordinate those systems to combat. I think a big part of that is the lineage of dungeons and dragon that established that adventuring in rpgs primarily looks like swinging swords and casting spells, but to be fair to dnd in a game with very distinct character classes like that having any one class with a complex mechanic the point is that the other players dont have the expertise to deal with (like the trap bit in dunmeshi) would make for a weird play flow.
But a manga like Dungeon Meshi doesn't really have to worry about player experience so it gets to do game things games dont get to do. It's really interesting to me and I'd be super curious to see if a game with the type of breadth of dungeon meshi could work

If the Dunmeshi party was being played in a Fantasy Flight 40k game instead of dnd, I feel like Chilchuck would thrive. Milky Way's most successful ratling.

what monster do you want to see the dungeon mehsi crew cook up?
It’s a DND original but this thing.
Tumblr media
A grell… We ate one in a game I was in, almost ate a mind flayer tadpole too (I think they start out living in the brain part like it’s an anemone? I think bc of lore it’s symbiotic but might just be parasitic). I believe in the Dunmeshi party they can make it work… Marcille will never mentally recover
Beyond that, all my favorite monsters got eaten already... Except trolls. Listen, fine ok they don’t exist, but it’d be fun if they successfully ate a troll turned that’s turned into stone, like scraping off some minerals like it’s salt or something lmaoo. They never ate shapeshifter either, prob boring but like, raccoon meat? Can’t remember if they ate the changeling mushrooms either.
Thinking of other dnd monsters I was gonna say kobold and immediately realized my mistake lmaoo- I ALSO have eaten some kobolds in a dnd game, but TO BE FAIIRRRR in both this one and the grell situation (different campaigns) we were starving. With the kobolds we got food poisoning… But I do think it would have been interesting to see a demihuman like mermaids… Laios and senshi going up to Kabru like "hey if you had to cut up a humanoid how would you do it" "Well i’d start with the ribcage and- WAIT WHY" Would it taste more like fish or more like human… A question Laios would crave an answer for, for academic purposes of course of course. Fish I’d imagine, but I guess how would they even know if it tastes human… Guess they can ask Senshi lololol WAIT-
Seeing more yokais could have been cool too. Like I think kappa would have been really fun, they’re like turtles and they have special life water on their head. Wonder what Kui would have cooked up for them biology wise… What’s the shape of their skull… Why do they immediately die once dehydrated…
Last one, I don’t want them to eat the poor guy but the azukitogi/azukiarai is a soft spot yokai of mine, it’s literally just a creepy little old man demon who washes beans by a river all day, like that’s what they do. Senshi forget Anne I got a buddy for you

didn't poast last week so this is a two-week extravaganza post! con: got roped into DMing dnd pro: none of these fools have read mdzs so i can steal plots from there. hope the party is ready to be lead on a quest by a disembodied arm!
listening: oh shit SO many things. i will not be linking to all of them.
depeche mode: basically just their top songs on spotify, not any specific album. strong shoutout to 'shake the disease' and 'wrong' (which featured in my secret samol post!)
disturbed: ditto
franz ferdinand: albums 'hits to the head' and 'tonight'. throwbacks
phoenix: 'wolfgang amadeus phoenix' ditto throwback
inxs: 'x' DITTO throwback. doesn't hit the same as when i first listened to em years ago unfortunately
streetlight manifesto: album 'somewhere in the between'
boy and bear: 'harlequin dream'
sammy rae: 'let's throw a party', 'the good life', and their 'everybody wants to rule the world' cover
hozier: 'wasteland baby' and 'unreal unearth'
paramore: album 'this is why'
grizzly bear: 'veckatimiest' and 'painted ruins'
haken: their newest album 'fauna' because i'm thinking about whether or not to go to one of their shows in feb (leaning towards yes right now)
my SO's pinecore playlist
shosty symphony no 5 (<3)
and, finally, a lot of borodin symphony no. 1 in e flat and the last two movements of rimsky-korsakov golden cockerel because that's what the youth orchestra i'm volunteering with is playing right now haha
for podcasts, i've listened to the new counter/weight prequel eps! i'm so charmed to see these characters again. i still haven't finished millenium break holiday special because i lost my spot when a bunch of an episode played without sound by accident so i finally went and scrubbed back to the beginning of the episode (it's the second to last part) so by next week i will FINALLY be out of holiday special zone.
reading: finished rereading tgcf lol,,, in loving memory of square checkbox: apparently apple is switching to circle ones? hateful wikipedia page for kessler syndrome my friend @celestialtourguide sent me a dm to ask about a few of the characters in this manuscript and i was immediately charmed by it. it's so pretty, i loved the informational blurbs, just really cool stuff. it was already on waybackmachine but i've gone ahead and updated it.
Tumblr media
watching: kurtis conner looksmaxxing. weird little subculture peek. rewatched sideways' why the music in cats 2019 is worse than you thought because my roommate was interested. this led us to the same channel's why avatar has the most ironic soundtrack of all time because roommate misread ironic as iconic and she really likes that movie. no accounting for taste, but aight. much more interesting than i thought it would be. that video then lead us to tony hinnigan's woodwind demos because hell fuckin yes. big-ass panpipes.
i've been keeping up on dunmeshi anime in little watch sessions with my SO, and also am working through kill la kill with him! i've seen it before but he has not so i'm really enjoying that.
playing: fallow.
making: i managed to finish my secret samol gift in time for reveal day!!! comics are fuckin hard dude!!!! i don't know if i'll be doing it again but it was a fun challenge. i decided to use a New App for some reason instead of procreate because procreate has not been hitting right and i wanted comic half tone brushes for this project. app is called sketchbook, it's an orange icon with a pencil on it. shrug! it's fine! i'll probably keep using it for a bit. started working on an english paper piecing project! soliciting tips for that because right now my method is: cut out hexagon using pattern piece i made to be 1/4 in larger all around than the template, gluestick template onto hexagon, baste edges down neatly, whip-stitch right sides together. remove template once all six sides have something attached. i'm sure there's a better way to streamline this process, i'll have to experiment. this will end up as a dice bag i think.
Tumblr media
finally, pottery starts again this week! so next week will have some of that in here
eating: ah beans i did not do a good job keeping track of this. uh. made the ground pork & cabbage thing again because my roommate got SO much napa cabbage for making kimchi and we had a shitload left over. napa cabbage isn't as good as a more standard cabbage for this imo, standard cabbage tends to be a little sweeter i think once it's cooked in? idk. had some stage 5 mental illness moments last week trying to cook dinner on a very short time scale with lots of other shit to do, following a recipe because fucking of course my roommate wanted me to cook with a recipe that night. anyways.
misc: like said at the top, somehow i managed to sign up for Another Activity god damn it. so now every saturday evening i run dnd. tl;dr i'm in a group irl that meets biweekly, someone who i give a lift to for that was complaining in the car that their other online group's dm ragequit after his encounter wasn't well-balanced (skill issue) and before thinking about it i just was like oh well i could probably step in if you need! god damn ittttt lol i have missed dming so it should be fun. i vibe checked them for a session 0 last week and they seem chill and honestly shouldn't be too much work on my end, especially if i yoink plots from mdzs ha ha ha. other than that, all is basically well. i've settled back into a schedule, applied for some summer positions (!), and absolutely hate the amount of busy work in one of my two classes. yippee

Talent De Lune dungeon meshi AU?
I'm an anime-only (for now... >:]) so things will probably change as I watch/read further, but yeah! TDL dunmeshi AU!
(I don't have much worldbuilding/lore knowledge so I'm just referencing this old DnD AU I used to have for fantasy species and party role. For now!)
Tumblr media
Sam is like if Laios was Marcille lol. She wants to save her bff Cameron who got eaten by a dragon but she is NOT happy about the eating monsters thing. In DnD terms she's a human fighter, and I think her weapon is just Punching.
Tumblr media
Cameron is dragon lunch! RIP. In DnD terms he's a half-elf cleric but I'm pretty sure that's gonna change. I don't even know if dunmeshi has clerics lol I'll have to see
Max is an elf sorcerer, which will definitely change I bet. I think he's the one who wants to try eating monsters the most but he wouldn't be so blatant about it... Maybe Ben would be in the party? I think he's the most like Laios in personality but he wouldn't be hyperfixated on monsters. He'd still want to try the food though! Good sport!

Chilchuck and Falin!
Chilchuck - which of the main parties (Laios', Mr. Tansu's, Kabru's, Shuro's, The Canaries) is your favourite?
I really like the premise of the Canaries, honestly. And they even have a werewolf with them!
Falin - what is your favourite part of the series' established magic system?
The fucking trope of running out of spellslots actually having like, a physical representation and consequence on the spellcaster. FUCK IT'S SO GOOD. And it's so simple too???? Like. In DnD you're like "im tapped out soz lmao" but in dunmeshi you've got your caster having to be mindful of their magic reserves cuz they will be useless for a WHILE afterwards otherwise. I like it a lot

that post was convincing what is dunmeshi + where can i read/watch/access it
Lmao dunmeshi is short for dungeon meshi (eng name is "delicious in dungeon") which is a manga by ryoko kui! It's a very funny and interesting take on a kind of dungeon-crawling dnd universe setup where an adventuring party gets KO'd and has to go back down to rescue the member they left behind with no supplies, and so have to find food in the dungeon on the way. I'm not caught up rn but as of the point I got up to it's very very good! I love the author's design variations on a lot of fantasy races (love the kobolds in this series) & I am tentatively hoping for lesbians but we will see how that pans out
I believe it has an english translation so obvs support that if you can, I was reading it online (ik ik) but I think the site I was using shut down so I cannot help you on that front unfortunately :v
