official Star Trek instagram posted something about Sam Kirk being in strange new worlds. many people replied to say modern trek is dumb and he never had a brother in the original series!!! funniest comment imo is definitely “Why not include his wife, pet cat, and gay lover while you’re at it!? Making shit up now!?”

honestly greatly enjoying watching various current star trek shows struggle to decide how to work with the 90s/early 2000s being seen as the distant future in older shows when it is our past or present.
like in the sixties when the nineties were decades in the future the original series established that there were wars/khan/etc but in strange new worlds they just used the line “This is Earth in our 21st century. Before everything went wrong.” and apparently moved the eugenics war back a few decades at least and in picard they had soong doing… something with a file on khan from the nineties in 2024.
idk just fascinating how they decide to retcon some things and reemphasize others lol

okay a few more thoughts on snw ep 1:
Celia R Gooding as Uhura is so delightful!!! As soon as she was cast I checked Twitter and they seem wonderful there too :) I think Celia really displayed body language in a couple scenes in a very specific careful way that reminded me of some Uhura scenes in tos that I remember which is great, I can’t wait to see what they do with Uhura (and relatedly I liked that we saw her meeting chapel I think they should be best friends and maybe kiss)
Chapel + Ortegas + M’Benga I cannot WAIT to see what they do with you guys i don’t really have a feel for the direction we’re taking but ily
sigh. okay so spock. I don’t know. I just struggle to connect this version of him with tos spock I guess? Like if I didn’t have all these original series scenes popping into my mind whenever he does or says anything and making me go “I don’t think he would do that” I think I would like him a lot more. I definitely have trouble reading tos spock as anything other than totally gay so that makes me more biased I guess but even disregarding that I do find many of his scenes just hard to relate back to the original guy lol.
also the t’pring stuff… I will withhold judgment for the most part until we know what direction the writers are taking this and I think it WAS meant to be shocking to the audience but also I’m having trouble not looking back and forth between this and his hand stuff with the romulan commander/him and t’pring being nearly strangers and deeply unhappy in amok time/MANY other scenes. also scared what the official snw opinion on arranged marriage is going to be
also also if they demonize t’pring in any way I’m gonna lose it. I was very sympathetic to her when I watched amok time and then read posts on here and saw that some people hate her and think she should’ve… what? just slept with/married a guy she clearly didn’t want to? I think every action she took in the episode was justified and I would like to think I would be bold and clever enough to do the same were i in those circumstances
The Samuel Kirk thing was hilarious though I must admit. And the implications—!
Melanie Scrofano was a fun touch I was obsessed with her (thank you Wynonna Earp) when I was 14 :)
hmmm what else. Oh I don’t mind Pike but I really don’t get why people are so into him on here lol. Maybe it’s the lesbianism a little but I just don’t care that much. The scene where he was practically hugging that horse while talking to the admiral was funny but if I wanted to watch a white guy Star Trek captain who liked horses I would just watch tng lol
Anyway I am excited to see what directions they go in and whether they do keep it more episodic or go in with an overarching plot. Obviously have more opinions on the episode but this was what I felt like writing :)

insane that there’s a star trek episode about two people who are (more or less) reborn and fall in love multiple times in a soulmate way and it’s a romantic tragedy. and it’s from the nineties AND it’s lesbian

having some thoughts about Jadzia’s zhian’tara and specifically how it was Benjamin who took the role of joran... I saw someone a while ago expressing shock at him being the one she chose to play that guy and on the one hand I get it, and don’t actually know why the writers chose that when these two men are so fundamentally different (though as many of the other pairings were opposite like odo and curzon it might be intended specifically to draw attention to those contrasts. And Avery Brooks definitely has the range) but like from an in universe perspective I do think it’s easy to find an explanation!
however much Dax has come to trust and care for the entire senior staff by the end of season three, Benjamin is the one person she’s known since before she was even Jadzia. He is her oldest friendship and the one she usually goes to for advice and comfort, probably the person she’s trusts most in the universe (also especially look at rejoined, just a few episodes later, for that trust to be emphasized). even in the first part of the first season of the show like in the episode “dax”, we see how much he cares for her and how dedicated he is. she knows how unconditional his friendship is (and feels the same way towards him), and therefore of course he’s the person she trusts with Dax’s worst facet. he won’t judge her for the actions and feelings and thoughts of that host, and she knows he is strong enough to stay in control, not get overwhelmed by the personality and desires of the soul he basically volunteers to get possessed by. Idk I just think that the witnessing of vulnerability is something these two are fairly comfortable with between them, after youth and loss and just a decades long friendship, and that jadzia specifically chose ben for joran out of her love and trust for him and I have a lot of feelings about their friendship haha
