WIP questions tag
i got tagged by @eff-writes and I haven’t actually participated in a tag game in like 10 years, so here we go!
1. What is the working title of your book?
Book 1 is called The Beginning. Boring, I know... The series as a whole is called Feilan! It used to be The Feilan Chronicles but then I decided that was stupid.
(book 2 is The Queen of Feilan, book 3 is Storm and Shadow, book 4 is Liaea. 2 and 4 are literally perfect but 3 is Bad and needs replacing when I finish the manuscript.)
2. Where did the idea for your book come from?
It’s based on a recess game I used to play with friends in elementary school. You know how basically everyone was involved in that stupid Boys Versus Girls war in first and/or second grade? I was the leader of my school’s stupid Boys Versus Girls war, it was centered around “Fairyland,” and my friends and I all had these overly complicated self insert characters that we LARPed as during recess. Over the years, the boys vs girls thing faded away, but we kept playing fairies and developing the ~lore.~ When I got to sixth grade, I decided to write it all down for posterity, and that’s when the first concept of Feilan came into being. I wrote the first legitimate draft in 9th grade, after spending a few years developing the characters and world into something that could exist without relying on bad self insert Mary Sue logic.
There were a couple specific scenarios that we always wound up playing, and those are what the books’ core plots are about. Book 1 is the game we played at my house in the woods, usually searching for treasure. Book 2 is the ice skating rink game where we rescue Violet from the Frozen Isles, fused with the swimming pool game where we turn into mermaids. Book 3 is the one we played at my friend Emily’s house, where we built couch fort “prisons” and tried to escape without making enough noise to bother her dad. If we knocked too much stuff over, he’d come up and lecture us for interrupting his Warcraft game, so avoiding him became part of the LARP. Just typing this is bringing up vivid flashback-style memories.
3. What genre is your current work in progress?
High/heroic fantasy, with a drop of genre de/reconstruction added in for fun :)
4. Choose the actors for your movie rendition.
Lucy Liu has to play Lilac Ravenhart. I don’t care about anything else but she has to be Lilac, it’s perfect.
Honestly, if I got a movie, I’d want Sayara to be played by a total unknown because I feel like it fits her place in the story. She wants to be known as Sayara, the actor should want to be known as Sayara and not as whatever their last major role was. Plus I can’t think of any actresses who are short and buff enough.
5. Give a one-sentence synopsis of your book.
An ambitious illegitimate princess stumbles into a civil war and somehow manages to make herself a ~new legendary hero~, much to everyone else’s chagrin.
6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agent?
I’m not sure yet! It would be awesome to have an agent and be published with a legit publishing house, but self-publishing is faster and easier. Considering that I’ll be trying to market a debut novel with niche appeal and no romantic subplot to speak of, which also has three sequels.... self-pub seems more likely right now.
7. How long did it take you to write the first draft?
The first first draft? I plugged that baby out in six months back in high school, because I didn’t have anything else to do with my life. It added up to over 150,000 words, so that was no small feat. It’s taken progressively longer to finish every new draft since.
8. What other books would you compare your story to?
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (frantic googling sounds)
Honestly, I have no clue. I’ve read lots of books with similar concepts or characters, but I’ve never read another book that was enough like mine for me to want to make a comparison. I’ve taken some inspo from Game of Thrones, but deep worldbuilding lore and too many characters isn’t enough similarity to make a good comparison. Most of the fantasy I’ve read lately has been in a very different vein from what I write, because I’m trying to push my boundaries.
9. Who or what inspired you to write the book?
I got into this a little with the “where’d the idea come from” question! But mostly, my inspiration was spite.
The reason for making this particular recess game into a novel was, simply, that I couldn’t find a single book in YA fantasy that gave me what I wanted out of a story. I wanted strong female leads, who didn’t fall in love or have a LI, who saved the world without being questioned because of their gender or being outshone at the final hour by random boys. Do yall know how rare books like that were (and are) in YA fantasy? Full respect to paranormal romance writers, but your genre was the bane of my existence in high school, because the library would always label it as fantasy, and they always stocked twice as much of it as they did the actual fucking fantasy. Poor little naive Taz would pick up book after book about cool monsters and seemingly-intriguing plots, only for it to devolve into Edgy Boy Love Triangles. I didn’t care about the sexy demon/angel/whateverthefuck boys! I wanted to know how the girl who was supposedly the protagonist was gonna save the world!
Also, I was really into fairies, but the only YA-ish author I could find who wrote about them was Holly Black. Who is a talented writer and I envy and respect her success, but that just wasn’t the kind of story I wanted to read, yknow? She’s too edgy, and the love interests are... that.
I’d sat on “the fairy story” for years at that point, but this powerful rage was the kicker to actually get me started. I was bitter and salty and figured that if nobody would give me what I wanted then I’d just have to make it myself.  I already had this source material that was funny and weird and deep and (as far as I could tell) totally unique, so I took it and ran with it! My friends gave me a lot of inspiration, because a few of them still remembered the fairy game, and they wanted to know when their characters would show up. So I’d send them chapters as I finished them, and we’d all get excited about stupid inside jokes and goofy names.
10. What else about your book might pique a reader’s interest?
I think the deconstructive elements are the core appeal in Feilan. I have a lot of the trappings of standard high fantasy--the lost princess, the return of the evil, the big war, the chosen one--but they’re used with the intent of picking them apart to see what makes them tick. None of the elements listed are played entirely straight.
The main cast is made up of mostly royalty, and their positions have Actual Responsibilities that motivate the plot and their character development instead of just being set dressing.
Female friendships and relationships are really important to the story, no boys will ever appear to derail character arcs at any point.
One of the main characters (Violet) is a trans girl and I know people appreciate queer content
(most of the main characters are actually under the queer umbrella but it doesn’t really come up in canon since i have a lot of plot to deal with)
Sayara is a relatively unconventional character type (especially for a female protagonist), she’s ambitious and mostly confident in herself, and her conflict comes from the way other people treat her more than how she treats other people. She’s not forced to learn “humility,” she’s not forced to give up on what she wants. Instead she learns how to handle responsibility and move past naivety to realistic optimism, and how to achieve her goals without hurting other people by it. I feel like that’s a theme that should be way more common in YA fiction than it is right now. teenage girls are right about things sometimes!
i have Deep Worldbuilding(tm)
The magic system has categories and you can sort yourself. because we all know what’s really important here.
I’m not going to tag anyone new in this, because I’m tired and I don’t have the energy, but if you want to pass on the challenge then feel free to say I tagged you! :)

*Harvey enjoys reading Shakespeare. I think he and Elliott would be good friends.
*Elliott stares off into the river on the bridge because he thinks bridges are romantic and he needs inspiration for his Gothic romance novel.
*Alex drinks Gatorade constantly.
*Demetrius refuses to turn on the A/C in the summer because he's worried about his work papers fluttering away and ending up on the floor. His family has to sweat it out or use localized fans. Seb doesn't care. The basement is pretty cool.
*Gus donates food to the local shelter and soup kitchen.
*Haley goes shopping in Zuzu City frequently once access to the train is repaired. She is not a bus girl. Haley would do more online shopping if her internet didn't crash so often. She regularly calls Sebastian to come fix it. He obliges only because it's a gig and makes him gold but he is secretly starting to like her a bit. She doesn't find him that bad either.
*Sam used to cloud gaze with Granny Evelyn. He talks to Harvey about getting a better prescription so she can see the clouds again. He means well, but of course, doctor-patient confidentiality prevents Harvey from saying anything. He might just suggest it though in Evelyn's next check-up. ❤☁️
*Lewis wanted to be on a cooking competition show when he was younger. That's why he's so adamant about the soup being perfect for the Governor during the luau.
*Evelyn used to collect seashells with her little girl (Alex's mom). It's too painful, both emotionally and physically to do it now. But during the luau she let's herself dream a little and remembers her daughter.
*Robin is the unofficial town tourism board. Mayor Lewis always ropes her into meeting newcomers when they arrive. She is friendly and personable and a good fit for this role. I imagine she traveled frequently when she was younger and that's how she met Demetrius.
*Abigail plays World of Warcraft and Elder Scrolls Online. She has an epic high level character in both, even higher than Sebastian.
*Jas enjoys playing hide and seek with Shane and Marnie, but hates it when Mayor Lewis does. He's terrible at hiding, and he always sneezes and gives away his place.
*Post-recovery Shane likes to take naps in the Farmer's field on sunny days.
*Sam's allergies make him a poor farm companion, but he does wonders in sprucing up the cabin. If married, he would even create a little music room for himself and their kids.
*Marnie enjoys working out once a week at Caroline's. It helps with her body confidence. She is hoping to convince Pam to join sometime.
*Pam was married to a sailor at one point. He left her soon after Penny was born, going to procure diapers and he never returned.
*The witch used her memory erasing technique on the Wizard, her ex-husband to make him forger who his child is in SDV.
*Caroline once considered getting a health coach certification but worried the classes would take her away from raising Abigail properly.
*Pierre is a workaholic, but he allows himself to unwind at Stardrop every Friday evening. He wishes Caroline would join him, but she's not a night owl.
*Gunther is allergic to peppers. He hates spicy food. Tacos literally make him gag.
*Penny relates better to children than adults. She is a painfully shy introvert and she had a speech impediment as a child. She used a puppet to help communicate.
*Jas also had delayed communications, and Vincent is showing early signs of ADHD.
*Emily and her best friend, Sandy grew up doing everything together before moving to the Desert. They swam in the Gem Sea, they played pirates and nobles in the Cindersap Forest, and they collected gems in the quarry. They always invited Haley to join but Haley refused since she didn't like the more active gameplay. When Sandy moved away, Haley was secretly glad hoping Emily would finally spend more time with her.
*Leah loves making fresh salads. When she lived in the city, she would visit the Farmer's Market near daily.
*Maru wonders what life in space would be like. Her scientific and rational brain tells her she could never be an astronaut because of her poor eyesight and low stamina, but that doesn't stop her from dreaming.

It's that time of year again where Jon and I prepare to play games for charity! I donate 24 hours of my time (and money as well) to doing a live stream where you can watch me play games to raise money for the Colorado Children's Hospital. I'll be spacing those 24 hours over the weekend of November 7th-10th. I hope you'll pop in to say hello, see what kinds of games I'm currently playing, and maybe open your heart (and wallet) for the Children's Miracle Network.
Potential games in the stream: Stardew Valley, Amnesia: Memories, Cinderella Phenomenon, Hatoful Boyfriend, or possibly speed runs of the entire Mystery Case Files series/Delicious: Emily games (I’ve always wanted to try speed runs of both these series).
I’ll also be playing a few games with my husband that include: Armello, For the King, Monster Prom, World of Warcraft Classic and Potion Explosion.
Hope to see you there!

talk about any potentials u might have! and like what youd wanna do with them if u did app them!
okay lets see
most likely is beliax, who i might rename… what was my idea earlier… oh, ferrosia. beliax isn’t that fitting for her lore. ANYWAY she is one of my warcraft ocs! ive talked about her a bit, but. she is a black dragon, who are Designed Evil, but i enjoy kind of… playing with that a bit. her primary deal is that she was hatched after most of the other black dragons were all wiped out after trying to destroy the world. she barely managed to scrape by. she claims she just wants a quiet life to herself, but that… would never actually satisfy her. she has an unending need to power to try and fill some vague void in her from feeling so isolated. she’s a little tragic because she probably would’ve ended up less awful if some other dragons had given her a bit of guidance when she was very young….. but she also throws away any chances to have a stable life with other dragons in a similar situation.
ANYWAY. i am trying to push myself to app her because villain! denny needs villains! i need a villain! and she’s not like laurel, she’s not gonna get immediately routed to a redemption arc. she’s kind of redemption arc proof, actually, she’s like a kung fu panda villain that rejects a redemption arc. one of my main problems is i DON’T know what she’d do exactly. she’s clever and scheming and likes to charm her way into different social circles to try and build up power, but usually ends up getting impatient and throwing them away/destroying what she made. but i don’t know… what she’d do? she could join up with the MLD, or maybe team up with jack, or… i don’t know. but at this point i figure it might be better to “app a villain and then figure it out” than “sit around and don’t app at all”
and then a few others…
ive also considered arvensia (also maybe be renamed). she’s another warcraft oc, also a dragon. she’s a twilight dragon! theyre a bit weird. she’s kind of a foil to beli/ferri, in that arvensia is everything she SAYS she wants. arvensia is also a designed chaotic evil dragon, but she’s chaotic neutral. she really does just want a life of her own and to get away from her kind’s terrible history and reputation. in some versions, the two of them team up, but if i app them both to denny they probably won’t know each other. i think she has a lot of potential to end up hanging out with some denny people, especially some groups on the edge. i just gotta… differentiate her from laurel. she’s the sort who could end up dragged along with heroes, OR working with villains, OR just in some neutral group… she’s not a bad person, but she’s not really a good one either. she’ll take umbrage with like, some things beli does, but she’d look at the mld or jack and just go “who cares, not my problem”. her and beli/ferri are both Young Dragons, both under ten. (so mentally theyre in like... i think i decided beli/ferri is like early twenties, arvensia is like mid twenties)
and for a warcraft CANON, i’ve considered apping jaina. she is….. an old warcraft character. she was introduced in warcraft 3, i think, which came out in 2002. and she’s been pretty involved in lore since then. she’s this like, very powerful human mage who originally really just wanted peace between the horde and alliance and was kind of a symbol for that. but then some intense trauma happened and she got more… vengeful before people talked her down. her most recent stuff has involved reflecting on her past and going back to the homeland that hates her. she is, uh, a warcraft women, which means her writing is all over the place and very ?? at times, but… conceptually a lot of it is compelling. ive hesitated because 1) warcraft characters sometimes feel weird outside their universe, since the world is one of the best parts of that lore 2) ive been waiting to finish the new question stuff, but health issues and… game balance issues have been a block 3) the weird and baffling moral stances this expansion has been taking, esp re: jaina’s old feelings about the horde?? i wont get into that, but. maybe someday. she’d be pretty interesting to involve with other magical characters, and she is pretty op but not likely to involved herself in things unless pushed, which… i feel like could be used somehow, but i’m not sure how.
actually i gotta link it, jaina’s warbringers song is basically the best thing blizzard has put out in years, even without context i feel like it’s worth the watch (warning for… some sytlized corpses, i guess? eh)
also, as you know, emily from until dawn! meeks mentioned maybe apping jess and i thought about if there was anyone i really liked, and… well. i always wanted to like sam, but emily stood out to me more. i think because she’s such an asshole, but in that until dawn cast way of “mean asshole until stuff gets real”. i’ve talked about her potential before so i don’t have much to add. i’m just sitting on this idea while i canon review slowly and see how i feel. it would be fun to have more college-aged kids around denny…

In 1994 a port was made for 3DO by Krisalis Entertainment and published by Interplay Entertainment. Alone in the Dark is a survival horror video game series, originally developed by Infogrames. In most of the games, the player controls private investigator Edward Carnby, who goes to investigate a haunted mansion or town that is full of undead creatures. The original story is based on the writings of H. Lovecraft, although later games in the series drew inspiration from other sources. A suspicious suicide. A chilling curse. A malevolent power. Finally, a wicked dark secret. This is Derceto, a legendary Louisiana mansion where, against your better judgment, you're drawn into a world of shadows to explore the darker side of Jeremy Hartwood's imagination.

Alone in the Dark is a critically acclaimed 1992 action-adventure horror video game originally designed by Frédérick Raynal and developed and published by Infogrames for the PC. In 1994, the game was ported for the 3DO by Krisalis. Alone in the Dark is considered a breakthrough and influential title, being the first 3D game in the genre of survival horror. It has spawned four follow-up games as part of the series, as well as two movies loosely based on them. Players choose between a male or female protagonist (Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood respectively), and are then trapped inside the haunted mansion of Derceto. The player character starts in the attic (the place of Jeremy's suicide), having ascended to the top of the mansion without incident, and is tasked with finding a way out of the mansion while avoiding, outsmarting or defeating various supernatural enemies including slave zombies and giant bipedal rat-like creatures. Though able to kill most enemies with simply fists and feet, the player character can also find and utilise weapons. Many opponents can be beaten by solving a particular puzzle rather than a straight fight - indeed, a significant number of opponents cannot be killed at all. Much of the game involves exploration and puzzle-solving, and optionally searching the house for clues to what happened before the player's arrival. The player character can search any area, open and close doors, push certain objects, and pick up some items. Items in inventory can be used, opened, read, thrown, or put down, though not all of these options are offered for every item. Inventory is highly limited, and the player must often discard items to make room. It is possible to discard items that are needed to complete the game, but discarded items remain in play and can be retrieved later, even if the player character leaves the room. Available space in inventory is determined by weight, not number of items; for example, a player may discard a book and two knives yet still not be able to pick up the heavy statuette. Unlike its sequels, and much of the survival horror genre, the game is partially non-linear. The player character is initially restricted to the attic and third floor, whose rooms are arranged such that they must be traversed in a linear order. Completing the puzzle at the end of the third floor grants the player character access to the first and second floors. The player can explore the rooms in this area in any order, and can also revisit the attic and third floor if desired. Upon completing a specific puzzle, the player gains access to the caverns beneath the mansion. The caverns are completely linear, and each challenge must be overcome as it is encountered.

You can trace the long lineage of horror-themed adventure games back to Alone in the Dark. It was the primary muse behind such famous games as Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Nocturne. As most of you who’ve been around the genre longer than me probably already know, Alone in the Dark is not a pure adventure. You’d have to call it an action/adventure. In fact, it’s so excellent at blending the two genres that you could probably make the argument that its one of the original games of this subgenre.
Alone in the Dark is heavily influenced by the wonderfully dark, twisted writings of H.P. Lovecraft, and that’s a pretty good literary pedigree for any game. If you haven’t read Lovecraft, chances are you’ve seen plenty of movies with the same idea: a researcher into the occult finds some ancient, dusty incantations and rashly begins reading them aloud, thereby releasing into the world all matter of unpleasant, icky monsters.
Once you have clicked 'Preferences', go to 'Connection' found on the left side of the window. https://greattastemakerfest.tumblr.com/post/638713821049061376/how-to-make-utorrent-download-faster-mac.
It was released way back in the dark DOS era (1992), and so you shouldn’t expect it to be graphically impressive. The game overcomes its “primitive” technology by a very high degree of craftsmanship. The sound effects are creepy and convincing. The character movement is complex and varied. The camera angles are constantly shifting, giving the game a very cinematic feel. Finally, the characters and objects have a convincing sense of weight and substance. The designers have done a great job with limited technology.
All of these factors add up to the result that, DOS or not, the world of Alone in the Dark is strangely compelling. It was the original game that sparked our immagination and showed the full potential of the PC as a genuinely powerful artistic medium that could, when done right, run games that can scare us half to death. Creepy camera angles, odd noises and spooky monsters all work in tandem to deliver on the of most memorable adventures on the humble computer.

What are your favorite character from each of your top 5 IP’s into?
UGH Don’t make me choose waifus.
Alright alright...
So.
Tracer (Overwatch) is a really submissive girl, who really works hard to please. She goes out of her way to get her dommes to control her and loves to get rewarded with a face-sitting. She doesn’t so much like ass-play, but doesn’t resist it because Emily loves that booty.
Sylvanas (Warcraft) is super boring, she hates sex because it is beneath her. The best you’ll get is a reluctant handjob from her, but she’ll happily pass you off to one of her minions if it’ll get you and your filthy cock away from her - specifically she likes trying to breed her Valkyr and given how precious they are to her, you will be bound and gagged the entire time. You might not even be warned, and you probably won’t be able to resist. Chandra (MtG) is super “slutty”, she fucks everything and has no impulse control. She’s into everything, but the best thing in the world to her is getting her pussy eaten, and absolutely wrecking your face as she does it. She gives no fucks about you or your feelings, she’ll pump and dump you as quickly as she burns mana. Then, if you’re not a bitch about it, she might come back on the regular if you’re good enough. Vi (League of Legends) is the handjob queen, no-one does them fiercer. She’s super into sloppy, angry, absolute “wreck me” sex but will kick the shit out of you if you dare disrespect her. It ain’t rough enough unless you leave bruised. She is also partial to blowjobs, it really makes her juices flow to roughly wrap her throat around a thick cock and drain it dry. But she really doesn’t like getting degraded guys... no seriously. (maybe a little)
Kerrigan (Starcraft) is a size queen and a breeder, she loves to see her armies grow just like she loves to see her own belly swell. Luckily for her, being a brood-mother for the Zerg is the perfect job for her and her adaptable body can handle just about anything with ease. She’s got no interest in small dicks, but she’ll play with just about anyone who she catches. She loves to see her prey squirm.

8/28/19 8:09pm - Meanwhile, In Real Time (basically all of aug ‘19)
So today I only have one patient for the first time in like half a year. I guess it makes sense since it’s the end of august and insurance policies are starting to roll over. After so many busy weeks of work it’s really exciting though.
And it couldn’t have happened at a better time. For one I’m pretty excited to get writing and catching up on this past year. But for TWO, World of Warcraft Classic just launched this week. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. Yknow I never played it before because I was worried how it would eat my life like Runescape did. But Spencer and a bunch of NC Melee peeps wanted me to play so I’m in there. Looks like my obsessions really have cycled in order.
[continued at 11:04pm after putting pts to bed]  Pokemon (first grade), Magic (third grade), Runescape (fourth grade), Halo/Gears (7th-9th), Guitar Hero (8th-10th), Quiz Bowl (11th&12th) , Ultimate Frisbee (12th-soph), League of Legends (soph-senior), Melee (senior-last year). I have a kind of filthy habit of playing so much that it’s debilitating and then finally breaking out of it only to move on to doing the same thing with something else.
Since quitting melee I’ve gotten obsessed with Pokemon and Magic, so it looks like getting into WoW was inevitable.
Just kidding, an unscheduled 2nd patient showed up and it turns out he’s actually supposed to be here so I’m not QUITE so free as all that, but it’s still not 3 patients, 2 is totally easy for me now.
Lol I took this screenshot when I got in to the office
Tumblr media
as of now I’m all caught up with work and I’ve still got 133 minutes to go, so looks like I have plenty of time to write for a second.
So what do I have to catch up on? well my days have been looking like weds-thurs-fri are always work, saturday I’ll stay up all day doing something, sunday I’m usually sleeping in, Monday I’m usually either playing DnD or chilling playing games, and Tuesday is a chill day until karaoke.
The past two weekends have been kind of crazy though, so I just wanted to write about them for a minute before I got too far gone.
Actually, let’s go back to 3 weekends ago. I visited Dars because I needed to, it’s been too long. I meant to write a lot more than I did, but instead I stayed up late into the night watching Andi draw shit on twitch. I’ve been thinking about her a lot lately, mostly trying to collect all my thoughts on what I want to write about, but I definitely miss her and hope she’s doing okay. I ‘accidentally’ responded to a question she asked when she was talking to herself on stream, I hadn’t meant to talk to her at all I just wanted to see her do her thing and reflect on her a little.  Really I wanted to watch her play breath of the wild. I miss us playing that together. Watching her enjoy something I enjoyed so much really made me happy. Anyway, I only bring that up because I tried to tune in again to actually watch her play BotW and found out she blocked me from her channel. I could still watch, which was nice, but I couldn’t say anything. Probably for the best. After watching her for a few hours I unfollowed her channel so I wouldn’t even try anymore.
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know.
I did that song at karaoke last night. I practiced in the bathroom and the car beforehand and was nailing it I thought. But I got up on stage and I was thinking of you and I bombed it. I haven’t bombed a song so hard since the time I tried to sing you I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing when I was in drunk-screaming mode, or the first time I tried to do MakeDamnSure. And those were when I was drunk. This I like just tried to get to the high notes and on stage I just couldn’t. My voice kind of broke. I cleared the crowd. It was humiliating, to be honest. I don’t know if I was tired from playing 12 hours of WoW with spencer yesterday (amazing, btw. I had a ton of fun), or if I was thinking of you too much, or if I was actually just floundering from making the first mistake (which doesn’t quite make sense because I’ve made mistakes and then fixed them easily in plenty of songs before). But it was awful.  I got to hang out with some friends for a bit, sang The Hand That Feeds and did excellently at it, got some good cheers and shit, but I still felt like ass. Went home and played some melee and some more WoW and stayed up until 6am and slept 12 hours lmao.
So I had an avocado for dinner and now here I am. I’ve been doing more fasting days lately where I eat really light. They’re not true fasting days because usually I eat a bunch of nuts or something. But I don’t eat a big meal like I normally do once a day. Also I wanted to go back to Darlin’s because we watched zoolander, and at one point he says “bulimia is a great way to lose pounds before a shoot” and I was like “oh yeah, true.” lol so now if someone makes me eat a bunch of ice cream with them (darlin and jill), then I’ll do it and throw it up after -_-. Not the healthiest but I’ve only done it on like two or three occasions. I’m mostly being good. Only exercising once a week lately though, WoW kinda blew up everything this week and I’ve been hella busy lol.
Okay so week after Darlin’s, I made some new friends at karaoke that my buddy Skyler introduced me to there. I drove up to Virginia on Saturday to do Quarry Fest that tessa and her boyfriend had planned out on his property. It was fucking phenomenal. Spent the day day drinking and swimming, it was gorgeous out, beautiful people in swimsuits everywhere, made a whole bunch of new friends who loved me because they already loved tessa, saw a handful of old high school friends. I really got strong attraction vibes from my friend Emily, but she was there with a new boyfriend so ah well such a shame for her lmao. Stayed up until like 4 in the morning talking with people around a big bonfire, it was just like a fun old rappahannock field party where everyone knew everyone at least by a removal factor of one. Such a beautiful time. I fucking drunkenly danced my ass off all night while these live musicians and djs were on. Just phish style sway jammed out in the sand, made my legs fucking exhausted lol. Moving in sand is so fucking hard! I’d get a drink, chug it down, spin around drunkenly jam around for a bit, sober up, get a new drink, rinse and repeat lmao. The Diet Dr Pepper and white rum idea later in the night was miserable though. FUCK diet drinks they’re not adequate mixers. holy blegh. plus the rum was hot as balls I need to find a new kind of liquor to keep in my trunk. The best idea I’ve heard from people so far is sake. I loved Tessa’s boyfriend’s family too. The one little brother had the same supreme cheetah print that I had on except he had the boxers, we really hit it off actually. After sleeping in my car for the night I woke up and went skinny dipping for like an hour or so, I spent a lot of the next morning talking to him and his girlfriend, mostly entertaining her with the weird stories that I tell on here. She said I was probably the craziest person she’d ever met, and wished that I lived closer so that she could hook me up with her sister. She said she needed to try someone fun like me out LMAO. Then their family made a huge breakfast at their house and I got to pig out on some lox and chit chat with tessa about shit before heading back to Raleigh.
That’s right, I went there and came back for just a day because I needed to be back the next night for Emo Karaoke LOL. There’s no way I was gonna miss it, it’s only once a month.
It was the craziest thing though. My friends caitlin and gretchen came to emo karaoke but it hadn’t started yet because of an open mic poetry night, so they split to go to Ruby’s annual No Pants Party and told me to meet up with them if I wanted to. I was the first person to sing, I did The Used and it went fantastically. I met this guy morgan and his girlfriend elizabeth I think, and she emailed me a video of it lol I love it. I also sang backup vocals for him on MakeDamnSure, I was so happy that he asked me, I’ve literally practiced doing the backup singing just in case someone ever did hahaha. But after my song this girl walks up to me and says “did you go to chapel hill? Do you remember who I am?” I look at her and it’s none other than fucking LEXI. Like huge crush in college Lexi. Like written about her at least a handful of times at LEAST Lexi. Like I named my fucking CAR after you Lexi. So I was like “HOLY SHIT YES” oh my god and caught up with her and I’m 90% sure she was there with another guy, but I got to meet her friends and chit chat and I screamed my fucking throat out that night. My voice was already toasty from singing in the car all the way up and back from virginia but after that it was torched lmao. I also did The Used+MCR’s Under Pressure with my friend from there Kenny, got some chick’s number, and the list was full so I dipped after that.
Went to the no pants party and it wasn’t super crazy, but I got some beautiful pics lol. Caitlin helped me tie up my shirt super cute, I wore it as a blouse and as an ascot hahaha. But hanging with them at the no pants party mostly got me to this afterparty at a friend’s place downtown.  I had rum and bought some coke that we threw in the freezer, but instead of mixing the coke and rum me and Jacob had this great idea to mix the rum with freezie pops to see if it was any good. Did like 3 shots testing it out to see if the ratio could work. Mostly it tasted like a bad slushie lol. Went to the porch to smoke a cig and people started passing some coke around so I did a little of that, and started having this long ass conversation with this girl MJ. We hit it off for like literally an hour on the porch at 4 in the morning. We talked about pokemon and tons of nerdy video game shit, and it turns out she had been at karaoke that week, I had already listened to her singing! I got her number and have since tried to hit her up a few times to hang out. She’s always responded to all of my texts IMMEDIATELY. like within the minute fast. It’s weird. But unfortunately either because she’s not actually interested or because she’s truly been too busy, I haven’t been able to meet up with her to do anything. I guess we’ll see if that ever develops, but I think she was really cool. I really hope I at least get to make a pass at her.  After that I brought gretchen back to my place to hang out. Didn’t try to hook up with her or anything, but we just wanted to chill and do some blow that I had leftover and wanted to get rid of. Did some talking about some fucked up shit going on with some of her friends dying, but it was mostly in the context of her wanting to go back to the party to try to find an adderall on the ground when we ran out of shit. At like 8 in the morning we drove around to pick up some shit, but nobody was awake, she gave me half an adderall to try to help me stay up but after I popped it I still took a nap in the car while we waited so I was like yeah nah I’m tapping out. After driving to virginia and back and having two late party nights I was fucking spent and didn’t want to miss my appointment to drop my car off for repairs. Honestly though, I have no fucking idea what Brandon saw in her that made him so coocoo for her. She seems like your typical party hardy everything-sucks kind of girl. I don’t think I’ve heard her say a positive thing about...anything. She’s always shit talking or talking down about life or saying she wants to go somewhere else that’s cooler, or that older parties were more fun or some shit. Meh. Luckily I’m not the one tryna bang her, and Caitlin totally balances her out with how smiley and happy she is when I hang out with them. Her and Jacob are cute as fuck too.
But I DID end up making it to my appointment. My car is almost done being fixed!!
Then I had a board game night that monday, me and Trent and Steven played some of this train game called snowdonia and I narrowly lost. Steven almost always beats me, that fucker lol. I really respect how smart he is about magic and game theory in general tbh.
Last week there was karaoke and work. At karaoke I found out this really cute smiley girl Hannah (a friend/coworker of my lesbian couple friends) is getting a divorce from her husband (she’s like 24), and so thattt’s pretty interesting. I don’t wanna make moves because she’s wonderful and I don’t want to be a douche, but she’s like... still the happiest person I’ve ever met even in the midst of changing her entire life. I kinda wish I could go on a date with her just to find out more about her lol. Saturday I didn’t sleep so that I could go to my friend Helena’s place for her to dye and cut my hair. I really followed through on wanting it to look like Brad Pitt from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood like I decided when we saw it darlin’s lol. I really wanted to change my hair, I’m kind of sick of having bangs in my face and need to symbolically move on to doing something new. Then saturday afternoon/evening I got drunk as fuckkkk with broscious and irene for their housewarming party. First time getting really drunk with them it was so much fun! We played a drinking game while watching a glassblowing show where we drank every time they said glass or blew, so it was pretttty good hahaha. I probably overdid it with the threesome and trap jokes later with their friends when we got to the bar lol, but they seemed so innocent I had to fuck with them a little hahaha. Fell asleep on the floor of their living room at like 3 in the morning because someone else had dibs on the couch. Woke up at like 7am blegh, found out I lost my house key lol, went back to sleep at my place til noon, then went to play board games with steven trent and reyad again.  After that I went to boxcar to meet up with Maya, and she had brought a bunch of her coworkers and Rianne as usual, so it was a great time. We bounced from boxcar to Rianne’s place, got to drink with Ollie and played this weird frog golf game and we discussed whether Blonde or Channel Orange was the better Frank Ocean album. They ALL were fighting me that Channel Orange was just better in every way, but I still think Blonde is incredible. I offered to take Jill home to her place since she lives nearby, we got some mcdonalds and watched some american dad and had some great sex. and again the next morning, and again in the afternoon. So luckily that’s still working out, I thought it had fallen apart, but I’ll explain more on that later on when I finish playing catchup. I took her back to her car and we got some good ass ramen downtown.
We made tentative plans to hang out again the next day and maybe go thrifting and I spent the rest of monday playing Melee for a couple hours. But I woke up at 9am and started playing WoW with spencer, so when she hit me up that she was getting off work at like 3pm I was in the middle of a 6 hour bingefest playing WoW for the first time in my life. He told me I should keep playing with him so I didn’t fall behind and so I thought about it... and then I did lmao. I said that I was nerding out with my roommate and asked if she wanted to hang out after karaoke. She said yeah definitely but she might go to bed earlier than normal (~3) because she had to work a double. I hit her up at midnight to leave karaoke early after that embarrassment of a performance, but she never responded. I think she said she wanted to hang out so that she could blow me off too, tbh. But jokes on her, I got to play more melee until I could get through the login queue for WoW and got to play for another 3 hours. Perfect.
Though more sex would’ve been nice, for sure.
Anyway, things are going wonderfully. I’m going to a big concert in raleigh in two weeks. Probably just nerding out this weekend since I mixed up my weekends and didn’t make plans. Helena dyed my hair with highlights to look like brad pitt, but I’m changing it to be totally blonde like Maya and Rianne want instead. They miss my old yellow hair lol and Oliver and everyone I’ve asked did too so I’m gonna try it out again.
Definitely ready to move forward and try some new things.
I’ve been thinking about Andi way too much the past two weeks. It sucks. I really want to talk to her. And give her her chair back. So I want to see her. But I know I’m feeling good with everything so really things are better off just moving on I guess. Maybe once I finally write my catchup posts about her I can stop thinking about her. But it’s made me procrastinate a lot, I’m like literally doing anything I can to not write these last handful of catchup posts...
But I promise I will soon. I need to do it. Maybe that’s what I’ll do saturday while I wait for the queue for WoW to thin out lmao. It’s currently 12:06 and I still have an estimated time of 13 minutes after trying to log in at 7:45 lol.
Also tryna cop some supreme clothes tomorrow. Wish me luck, I Really hope I can get this tiger print jacket and hat. Boutta drop a mint lol. Clothes are kinda fun. It’s nice not dressing like a hobo all the time, I guess. Mostly because it’s hot. Once it’s the right temperature to wear pajama pants again you better believvvve I’m gonna just get fancy sweatpants lmfao.
Anyway, queue’s finally done! holy shit yeah it’s only 12:15 Kappa. Gonna go play some WoW love you guys bye <3

Exciting and Memorable Senior Thesis March Experiences
Tumblr media
Throughout special programs and this month our seniors are literally around the world engaging in self-designed experiences for their senior theses. These are immersion experiences that involve hands-on research and internships.
Associate Director of Communications and Marketing Emily Magnus ’88 has a fun contest to get photos and information from our seniors during their adventures.  Above are a few of the photos Ms. Magnus received, and below are some of the descriptions seniors sent her:
Charlie Cunha wrote: "Here’s a picture of me playing at Blues Night at Hal and Mal’s in Jackson, MS." Charlie is studying how the Delta Blues influenced the British Blues.
For her March experience, Yarmony Bellows visited Crooked Island in the Bahamas: "I am looking at hurricane damage. One of the pictures is with the mother of my host, Marina, and the other picture is of her house which was destroyed by Hurricane Joaquin."
Ms. Disney's Out Back group is teaming up with senior Kathryn Potter to help her with her senior thesis project and do a little citizen science work for Mountain Hub. At each campsite the juniors will measure snow depths and record them. When they return, Kathryn will submit them to @mtnhub and share their data with the global community! Kathryn's essential question is: What does the future look like for alpine glaciers? Will there be alpine glaciers left in 50 years?
Tanner Ensign also checked in. He's studying video game companies and writes, "Here's a picture that I took while at Blizzard Entertainment today. I got to see the areas that World of Warcraft and Overwatch are worked on. I also got to ask employees what their thoughts are on the future of game development. Now, I will be making my own video game for the duration of March."
Will Keating sent this message from the West Coast: "I am currently in Los Angeles studying the internet's effect on the music industry. I have been talking to people working in music distribution and creation. In this picture, I am working on a song with multi-platinum and grammy-winning record producer/writer DannyBoyStyles for an up and coming artist named Shraban."

Today I tried not to let my brain pull me into molasses. It was cold this morning. I put on as many layers as possible. Short John, my new 88 corolla has a working heater which is nice. Emily came with me for part of the train trip and I napped for the rest. At work I was tired, then I was depressed, then I was anxious, and then depressed again. On the plus side I had a playlist from Emily, news of her good day, and friends to complain near incessantly at. I managed to not have a panic attack about being tightly cornered into my train seat by a big old dude on an already packed train and came home to my amazing partner who made weird dinner and played World of Warcraft with me and Alison until bedtime. I did do one of those self evaluation tests for depression, anxiety, and stress today as well just because I haven't checked in line that in a while. Those tests are good because they ask you questions and then tell you what you're saying back to yourself in a certain way. Listening to that, I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be avoiding my GP and psych like I am. I should probably get over my hangups about meds also. Tomorrow I have to visit the vehicle registration office after work on a fasting day. I will need support cause it's gonna suck. - by acegiak.net

Granblue Fantasy Versus Review — Curves and Lines of Gran Designs
March 6, 2020 11:00 AM EST
Arc System Works proves to be the best fighting game developer with Granblue Fantasy Versus.
There have been so many facets of my life that have changed since I started working with DualShockers. Most notably, my gaming habits and interests have completely changed. There was a time where I believed long single-player experiences were the best games the medium could offer. Games like Mass Effect, Skyrim, and World of Warcraft were the peak of game design. Now, that is entirely not the case.
I have begun to favor much tighter, shorter experiences. Games such as The Messenger, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Emily is Away are among my favorite games of all-time. This also includes competitive gaming, arguably the tightest, and shortest experiences you can have in a video game — especially with the fighting genre. I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing most of the modern lineup you would see at EVO (Mortal Kombat 11, Samurai Shodown, and Under-Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r]). Each feels familiar but makes slight deviations to create a wholly unique experience. Granblue Fantasy Versus by Arc System Works and Cygames is no different.
“Granblue Fantasy Versus is maybe the most intuitive and beginner-friendly fighting game I have ever played.”
The one aspect of Granblue Fantasy Versus you will quickly notice in your first match is the visuals. They’re legitimately stunning. It is one of the best looking fighting games I have ever played. The amalgamation of the character designs, the bright environments, and aggressive animations all flow so well together. Everything is just so clear, which is both visually pleasing, and helpful for gameplay. It’s on par with Dragon Ball FighterZ, another Arc System Works game that arguably is the best looking fighting game of the past few years.
While I do think the overall visual quality is fantastic, the animations, specifically during the opening match cinematics and the super special “skybound art” moves, are a bit off-putting. The game runs at a solid 60 fps, but the character model animations look like they run below 40 fps. This is to simulate the motions you would see in an anime. A similar technique was done with Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s opening match cinematics. I understand the appeal of using this animation technique, but it just feels out of place, especially when the rest of the animations surrounding it are in 60 fps.
The actual gameplay of Granblue Fantasy Versus is not unlike other fighting games. There are light, medium, and heavy attacks. The fourth input is character-specific. It is all fairly standard. However, there are a few facets of its gameplay that really deviate from the norm.
Similar to Dragon Ball FighterZ, and to a lesser extent Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r], combos are executed automatically by simply pressing one of the three attack inputs. The button you press determines if it is a light, medium, or heavy combo. It is incredibly simple and very approachable for players who may not play fighting games regularly.
Adding to Granblue Fantasy Versus‘ approachability is how special attacks are executed. Instead of inputting a quick button combo (i.e. quarter circle+light attack, etc.), you can simply use variations of R1 and a direction on the d-pad or analog stick (if you’re using a DualShock 4); pressing the heavy attack input while executing special moves with this technique will give you a stronger special move. Additionally, inspired by Granblue Fantasy‘s roots, there are cooldowns for these special moves; the stronger the special move, the longer the cooldown. Of course, there are traditional inputs for special moves (called technical commands), which are beneficial as they have shorter cooldowns.
If that didn’t seem easy enough, any basic attack can be canceled into a special move. For example, your auto-combo might be three medium attacks in a row. Well, at any point during that combo, whether it is after the first or third input, you can cancel into a special move. This includes “skybound arts” which can be done by pressing quarter circle+R1. These are essentially super special attacks you can execute once your meter (known as the SBA gauge) is full.
Granblue Fantasy Versus is maybe the most intuitive and beginner-friendly fighting game I have ever played. Because of these simplified inputs, pulling off effective combos is a cinch. However, the game’s accessible nature should not be mistaken for lack of depth. I’ve played hours of this game and I am still getting whooped by other players who are far better at reading their opponent’s moves and executing even more intense combos. Every time I felt like I learned enough to be competitive, I then discovered something entirely new. It’s disheartening because I’m terrible, but it keeps me wanting to learn more about its systems and get better an using them to my advantage.
“Granblue Fantasy Versus is a must-have for fighting game fans.”
Learning the basics and even some of the advanced techniques of Granblue Fantasy Versus can be done naturally by playing the traditional Arcade Mode or going into Free Training. However, there is a tutorial (called “Mission Training”) that can teach you these basics, as well as some easy combos to get you started. There are also character-specific scenarios that will test how well you can defend, maneuver, or punish certain moves.
Much of the Mission Training is helpful and will get you started in Granblue Fantasy Versus, but it will do only that. Other fighting game tutorials, like the ones found in Mortal Kombat 11 and Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r], explain everything you need to know in tremendous depth. It’s impressive how much more I know about playing a fighting game because of Mortal Kombat 11‘s tutorial. I can’t really say the same about Granblue Fantasy Versus‘ tutorial. It is by no means bad, but I wish it went into the nitty-gritty of it all.
Everything you have learned can be tested online against real players. Overall, I would say the online experience for Granblue Fantasy Versus was positive. Out of the few matches I played online, it never felt like there was a noticeable amount of input lag, or that the match itself was lagging. It was a smooth experience throughout my online time.
While much of my time was getting absolutely crushed in Ranked, you can play casual online matches in Granblue Fantasy Versus via its lobby system, which I absolutely adore. When you first boot an online lobby, you will get to choose a cutesy avatar based on one of the few characters, as well as your default character you will fight with. The lobby I was in was aboard a skyship, which can hold up to 64 players at a time. Aboard the ship were Granblue Fantasy Versus arcade machines, which essentially act as the queue. A play can then approach the same connecting cabinet and fight against you. Again, everything worked as intended, but was unexpectedly adorable as well.
If competitive fighting games aren’t your bag, there is a single-player story called RPG Mode. To put it simply, Gran and his skyfaring crew are tasked to save the world from an evil long-haired man named Beezelbub who plans on restarting the entire universe. I put it simply because it’s entirely forgettable. In the moment, I was interested in its story, but it gets so monotonous by the time you get to the third level, I would just finish the quests as fast as I could.
youtube
My qualms are mostly pointed at the lack of variety the quests hold. The majority of these quests task you to simply kill the enemies on screen, or kill as many as you can within a certain time period. Enemy variety is mostly stagnant, until the latter half where darker versions of those enemies appear. It just gets tedious and boring.
It is interesting that the mechanics do switch up a tad bit during these portions. Since there are multiple enemies on screen, you are not constantly facing an enemy like you are during Versus Mode. Rather, your left and right movements determine where your attack will land. It is akin to a side-scrolling beat-em-up but with fighting game controls. It is novel at first, but that novelty wears off very quickly.
“To put it simply, Gran and his skyfaring crew are tasked to save the world from an evil long-haired man named Beezelbub who plans on restarting the entire universe. I put it simply because it’s entirely forgettable.”
There are moments called Raid Battles that do change things up but only for those few moments. Raid Battles are more akin to the traditional mechanics of Versus Mode, as you are only facing one opponent. However, these can range from other characters on the roster, to giant dragons. Each one of these bosses felt unique, both visually and in gameplay, and are really the only reason to check this mode out.
After you’ve completed each quest, you’ll earn weapons and abilities you can equip. This is where the RPG elements come in (along with the previously mentioned special moves). Each weapon features one of six elements: Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, Light, and Dark. Weapons also feature skills that help increase your attack or HP. These weapons can be upgraded with the in-game currency which will increase the actual level of the weapon, with skill shards which will level the weapon’s skills, and by feeding it copies of the weapon to increase the level cap.
“Granblue Fantasy Versus is such an amazing fighting game.”
When you equip a weapon, it becomes part of a grid, which you can add more weapons to, giving you more attack power and HP. As such, it promotes some experimentation, as you can add any weapon to the grid. However, Granblue Fantasy Versus‘ CPU fighters are so easy to take down in its default difficulty, you hardly have to tweak anything. I was perfectly fine with just using the auto-select feature, automatically places weapons on the grid for you.
The RPG Mode also features the Tower of Babyl, which is an extension of that story that adds a plethora of missions. There are a total of 100 floors, each following either one of the few quest structures from the main story. Along with unlocking Hard Mode after you beat the four to six-hour story, there is plenty to do once the story is done. You can also play cooperatively with another player, which may distract you from the tedium to a certain degree. It’s just too bad the majority of the quests are so repetitive.
Granblue Fantasy Versus is such an amazing fighting game. The mechanics are both intuitive and full of depth, making it a solid choice for both fighting game casuals and veterans. The visuals are gorgeous, with an animated aesthetic that allows it to stand out amongst the crowded genre. Its online features, although simple, are functional and allow you to really test out everything you’ve learned from its decent tutorial. The only downside is its RPG Mode, which may be filled to the brim with monotony, but it still has moments that are worth checking out. I cannot recommend Arc System Works and Cygames’ newest fighter enough. Granblue Fantasy Versus is a must-have for fighting game fans.

The best PC games around – essential pick-ups from every genre

The best PC games around – essential pick-ups from every genre
The best PC games
With unparalleled accessibility and endless upgradability, it’s no wonder that millions of gamers around the world think PC is the best place to play. Because of the platform’s history, curating a list of every great PC game throughout the ages would be a tough task, so we’ve put together a listing of modern titles that’re the best PC games to spend your time with right now.
So, in alphabetical order, here’re 50 of the best PC games around.
Cities Skylines- Honorable mentions: Prison Architect, Tropico 5
In an alternate universe where EA and Maxis didn’t drop the ball, this slot is occupied by the latest and greatest SimCity release. In fact, Cities: Skylines developer Colossal Order was miserably certain its project wouldn’t be greenlit thanks to SimCity’s announcement- but its subsequent pratfall only stimulated Paradox more eager to bring PC gamers what they wanted most.
The best way to describe Cities: Skyline is” SimCity but make use of people who liked the same things about the series as you did “. The indie squad has demonstrated tremendous commitment to ongoing support, too.
Civilization 6- Honorable mentions: Total War Rome 2, Endless Legend
Dissatisfied with the style of the world right now? Fire up Civ 6 and it’ll be 2019 before you know it.
This latest entry into Sid Meier’s Civilization series is an astonishing day sink, with the possibility to spend more than 1,000 hours across multiple games scrapping your style to global domination using strategy, diplomacy, and, when everything else fails, all out war.
The AI can be shonky at times- confounding itself and get stuck in the same flurry of actions- but there’s a lot to love here. Each of the present 24 civilization leaders are colourfully animated and bursting with personality, and there’s enough variety in their strengths, weakness and unique divisions to make playing different nations fun.
CS GO- Honorable mentions: Arma 3
To be honest we didn’t think anything could ever out Counter-Strike: Source as the go-to competitive shooter on PC( and for some people, both CS: S and the original CS remain their primary shooter ), but good ongoing support on top of the experience and panache of Valve’s development team has proved us wrong. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is now one of the top eSports titles in current circulation, and a damn good time even for the less competitively-minded.
Global Offensive was also available on consoles but like every Valve game support outside of Steam was restriction. Steam is where you’ll find the best of the best, if you fancy being humbled.
Cuphead- Honorable mentions: Nuclear Throne, Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth
Because of its unique art style, Cuphead has been on just about everyone’s radar for years. Thankfully, when it ultimately reached, the game was just as good at it seemed.
Cuphead is tough but accessible, and while the amount of projectiles on-screen can reach near bullet-hell different levels of madness, it entirely nails that artery-bursting, desk-smashing difficulty that has you fistpumping with every hard won victory.
DOOM- Honorable mentions: Wolfenstein 2, Bioshock Infinite
If your rig can run it, DOOM on max sets is a beautiful sight to behold. Well, as beautiful as monstrous demons from hell getting ripped to pieces with a chainsaw can be.
Fast-paced and ultra-violent, DOOM isn’t for the weak of belly- not just because the enemies leak strawberry jam like a poorly packed barbecue, but the ardor with which Doomguy doles out infernal punishment from a first-person view can leave some feeling nauseous.
This is no-holds-barred action at its eye-widening, engrossing best.
DoTA 2- Honorable mentions: Heroes of the Storm
DoTA- and MOBAs in general- might have started life as a Warcraft 3 mod, but with DoTA 2, it’s blossomed into a fully-fledged cornerstone of the eSports MOBA scene- with nearly $140 million won as prize money to date.
There’s a vast amount to get to grips with in DoTA 2, where developers Valve attained the trade-off of a steep learning curve for unparalleled depth. Once you’re up to velocity with the meta heroes and builds though, DoTA 2 offers a tense and engrossing competitive experience.
Dark Souls 3- Honorable mentions: Nioh, All of Dark Souls
Souls is a special series, and picking simply one game to represent it on a list is tough. It’s fitting then that Dark Souls 3 plays like a greatest hits, with all the strengths and weaknesses that come with that tag. It might not be as zeitgeist-shaping as the original, or have the same context or subtlety, but everything that you fell in love with is there in spades.
Dark Souls 3 also manages to be the most accessible Souls game, but doesn’t lose any of the challenge. The motion velocity might be quicker and some of the systems streamlined to be less confusing, but that doesn’t detract from the same core loop-the-loop that sits as the foundation for the whole series- die, and get ready to die again until you achieve glorious victory.
Dishonored 2- Honorable mentions: Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Prey
Immersive sims are synonymous with PC, and Dishonored 2 utterly nails the genre. Each map is a rich sandbox where you’re given a simple objective and how you reach it is your choice- leaving you to use every weapon in your arsenal as you see fit.
This means that every level plays almost like a puzzle to be solved, and you’ll be constantly be thinking, “what happens if I do this”, and “what happens if I go over there? ”
Dishonored 2’s dual playable results, Emily Kaldwin- the usurped queen- and Corvo Attano- the grizzled royal defender- have distinct power defines. Emily’s youthful indignation lends itself to a more destructive, violent playstyle, whereas Corvo is more adept at remaining undetected. This only adds even more replayability to a game that are currently has a whole host of different solutions.
Divinity: Original Sin 2- Honorable mentions: Tyranny, Shadowrun Dragonfall
For more than 15 years, Belgian maestro Larian Studios has been churning out quality RPGs in the old-school mould of genre classics. The recently published entry, Divinity: Original Sin 2, is a sequel to 2014 ’s Divinity: Original Sin- which itself is a prequel to the 2002 OG Divine Divinity- and a high water-mark for the already acclaimed series.
Original Sin 2 expertly mixes its nuanced tactical combat and memorable narratives and side quests with an incredible sum of option. The variety of potential interactions that can arise in every situation mean that the game’s formula bides fresh for the entirety of the its considerable length.
What’s more, you can party up with three friends and explore in four-player drop-in co-op, and this is an experience well worth sharing.
Dream Daddy- Honorable mentions: Huniepop, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havok
The world of dating sims can be a strange one, but the best in the genre approach their characters with a heartwarming earnestness that makes them a pleasure to befriend.
In Dream Daddy you play as a single Dad who’s upped sticks to a new township with your daughter, Amanda, in tow. In a fortuitous turn of events, your new home Maple Bay is stuffed full of eligible daddies just waiting to be wooed. With Amanda’s blessing, you can choose to date any of seven hunky parents, revealing more and more about their personality as your relationship grows.
There are normal and secret ends to unlock for each perfect pop too; enough to keep any would-be matchmaker busy.
Elite Dangerous- Honorable mentions: Star Citizen
A few years ago it felt like you couldn’t move for all the upcoming space sims, but very few of them have materialised in any form a sane person would pay a retail price for. Elite: Dangerous practically wins over its genre buddies by default just by being a playable, full-featured game you can buy as opposed to something you’re allowed to look at in trailers while gibbering for a release date.
It’s also great, though, which is why it’s here. We don’t have much hope for the console constructs, to be honest; what you want is a powerful old beast of a PC, all the situates turned up as high as they can go, and a gorgeous universe to go and explore. At least one of those things is yours for the taking, courtesy of Frontier Developments, and nearly justify an investment in the first one so the second becomes a potential.
Europa Universalis 4- Honorable mentions: Hearts of Iron 4
Ah, grand strategy. How better to live out your imperial fantasies than at the helm of an endlessly growing empire that responds totally to your beck and bellow.
While Civilization V also occupies this list, Europa Universalis 4 stands out because of its straighter representation of history and the world as we know it, rather than a haphazardly made map each time. You’re still guiding your nation through centuries of diplomacy, trade, and warfare, but now there are random events to contend with as well. These can reflect the real world challenges that a nation in your opt part of the world might face, or come entirely out of leftfield- meaning there’s always room for a spanner in the works of your best laid plans.
To deplete Europa Universalis would take hundreds of hours on its own, but add the ceaseless release of new DLC packs and- even if they’re a bit pricey – you’ve got a strategy game for the ages.
EVE Online- Honorable mentions: Warframe, Black Desert Online
EVE Online is like nothing else out there. Where most games are lorded for their deep worldbuilding and painstakingly crafted lore, EVE’s greatest legends played out in real period between real players.
Hardcore members of this profession-based space sim have formed sophisticated corporations which fuel the game’s functioning economy. In times of peace the organic-feeling world is a marvel of role-playing. But when shit makes the fan, EVE Online plays host to more political intrigue and calculated backstabbing than a glossy series of HBO drama.
If you’re in the market for a “living, breathing world” that’s more than a marketing buzzword, EVE might be your purse.
Fallout 4- Honorable mentions: Skyrim
One of, if not the, best thing about Bethesda RPGs is the exceptional community of modders that painstakingly add hundreds of hours of fun to the vanilla experience with their hard work. So when the “Enhanced Edition” of Softworks’ previous highwatermark, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, was released and broke years of mod support, it was a weep shame.
It induces sense then to recommend one of Bethesda’s more recent endeavors, Fallout 4, which not only offers another romp into the transcendently awesome Fallout universe, but updates the underlying game mechanics enough to finally make it a competent shooter as well.
While the newly-voiced main character hampers some of the game’s ability to provide flexible role playing, the main narrative is interesting, the side quests are superb, and there are plenty of secrets and pop-culture references to unearth in all regions of the Commonwealth.
FF14 – Honorable mentions: Elder Scrolls Online
Final Fantasy 14 is one of the greatest redemption narratives in gaming. After a bumpy launch which find the game scrapped just after release in favour of a wholly revamped version, Final Fantasy 14 re-emerged with a reworked interface and gameplay, better optimisation and a snazzy new tagline: A Realm Reborn.
Now with virtually 12 million characters generated worldwide, FF14 is a thriving MMO community that’s merely been bolstered by the release of the critically-well-received Stormblood expansion.
The main depict for new players is the story missions, which tell the suitably grand tale of war between the adventurers of Eorzea and the invading Garlean Empire. But there are plenty of side quests- called Leves- to combat through as well; each oozing with that trademark Final Fantasy panache.
Fortnite- Honorable mentions: Team Fortress 2, Totally Accurate Battlegrounds
Fortnite is the biggest game running, and it’s not even on Steam. It’s been a slow-burn, but right now, Fortnite seems unassailable in its global domination, violating well and truly into the mainstream thanks to its popularity on mobile and with kids and streamers alike.
While the paid Save the World PvE game mode is fun enough and a good way to earn free V-bucks, it’s the F2P battle royale mode that’s taking the world by storm. The combining of a low barrier of entry, a simple to learn but hard to master gameplay loop-the-loop, and tense player-versus-player opposes constructs Fortnite a compelling proposition.
GTA 5- Honorable mentions: Saints Row 4, Sleeping Dogs
Yes, GTA 5 is on our PS4 and Xbox One best of listings. Yes, it’ll likely go on every listing we ever stimulate. It is just that good. It is a titan of our times.
But also it’s especially good on PC. Even though Rockstar has not been staggeringly supportive of modding( arguably fair enough, given how hard it must be to police GTA Online ), the GTA 5 mod scene is a gift that maintains on giving. The video editor has enabled some cracking bits of art and craft. And, of course, on Ultra decideds the PC version of GTA 5 outshines all the others. Sorry.
Gunpoint- Honorable mentions: The Swapper, Sperlunky
First there was nothing. Then there was Gunpoint. Now there are imitators- but nothing does it quite as well as Tom Francis did that first time, even if you can knock it over pretty quickly with your whizz-kid brain.
Gunpoint is a sort of stealth puzzle game in which players must infiltrate various houses without being identified by guards. Making use of existing securities systems and eventually even rewiring grids altogether is far more satisfying than merely ninja rolling across a doorway.
Hearthstone Witchwood expansion- Honorable mentions: The Elder Scrolls Legends, Chronicle: Runescape Legends, Gwent
Hearthstone, with each passing expansion, cements its place at the head of the card battling table further and further. While its original appeal might’ve had more to do with WoW nostalgia than anything else, it’s grown into its own distinct entity, and is now just as popular with gamers that’ve never set foot in Azeroth.
Regularly updated with new cards- like the most recent Witchwood expansion- Hearthstone manages to stay fresh by constantly introducing new mechanics. The RNG can be frustrating and the implementation of the new standard competitive format, which rotates cards out of circulation after a certain amount of time, can make it difficult to maintain a competitive deck if you’re not playing all the time. But the additions of the Dungeon Run solo adventure Monster Hunt mode have stimulated it immeasurably easier to enjoy the game for cheap.
Hollow Knight- Honorable mentions: Ori and the Blind Forest, Owlboy
Hollow Knight is a beautiful indie Metroidvania filled with lush animation, tight platforming and tense action. You play as The Knight, a mysterious character exploring the ruinings of the insectoid kingdom of Hollownest.
Despite its nebulous narrative, Hollow Knight is gripping thanks to its absorbing environments and original character design.
It’s not an easy game either, owing to some twitchy platforming and combat. A lot of foes won’t go down without a fight, and you’re almost certainly going to die a couple of times on some of Hollow Knight’s more difficult boss.
Homeworld Remastered Collection- Honorable mentions: Stellaris
If VG247 expanded its editorial remit to cover classic games, this would be a very different listing- but in both parallel cosmoes, Homeworld builds the grade. One of a number of properties put up for auction when THQ folded, support for Homeworld had well and truly ended and you couldn’t even buy the classic games any more, so the fanbase was hungry both for a re-release and for something new.
Gearbox’s Brian Martel was one of those fans, in the enviable position of being able to do something about it. The developer is not merely gave its boon and financial support for spiritual successor and now official sequel Homeworld: Shipbreakers, it put together a wonderfully tasty package in Homeworld: Remastered Collection. Both games in classic and updated kind, with a combined multiplayer suite? Yes, please. The classic gameplay is as strong as ever, by the way.
Into the Breach- Honorable mentions: Invisible Inc
From the sadistic minds behind FTL: Faster than Light, Into the Breach is an addictive turn-based strategy where you squish bug-like foreigners with giant fighting robots. What more needs to be said?
You fell your mechs onto a square grid populated not just with foes, but obstacles and objectives based on the type of mission you’ve undertaken and terrain you’re battling on. Your task is then to clear the field of hostiles in a certain amount of moves, involving considerable forethought and planning to get the job done effectively. While the premise is simple, completing the hardest challenges Into the Breach has to throw at you isn’t- and once you factor in the scalable difficulty modes, there’s some serious replayability here too.
Kerbal Space Program- Honorable mentions: RimWorld
In Kerbal Space Program you design, build and launch rockets from first principle. If this sounds like a doddle to you, you’ve been playing too many crafting survival sandboxes; constructing things takes more attempt than slapping the appropriate number of resources down on a blueprint.
Getting Kerbals into space is hard, but every time you blow one up or leave them endlessly orbiting the moon as a corpse, you’ve gained something: you’ve learned what not to do. It’s almost like a rogue-like with persistent character progression, only what’s being carried over is your knowledge. Get your little Kerbals to new reaches of the solar system, and then get them back again, is an absolute triumph.
League of Legends- Honorable mentions: SMITE
Another of the heaviest eSports hitters around, League of Legends is easier to get into than Dota, but is still retains a high level of strategic depth.
LoL has the largest roster of heroes of all the major MOBAs, with original and interesting champion designs that mean you’re pretty much always going to find someone new you want to try out. That choice is limited somewhat if you really want to play the metagame, but there’s still decent variety in the top pickings.
In terms of gameplay, we’re talking bread-and-butter stuff- two teams try to destroy each other’s Nexus while working to raise their individual power level- but here it’s executed brilliantly. The delicate balance that League of Legends manages to create between fast-paced action and strategic positioning attains it one of the best in the genre.
Life is Strange- Honorable mentions: Dreamfall Chapters, TellTale’s The Walking Dead
Originally episodic but now totally bingable, Life is Strange is an engrossing narrative of high-school drama, rekindled friendship, and day travelling. What’s better is that the first episode is now free, entailing you can get a savor of the waterside township of Arcadia Bay with no strings attached.
As Max, an 18 year-old wouldbe photographer, you explore the parallel mysteries of your new-found powers and the disappearance of fellow student Rachel Amber, all the while trying to fit into a new school and make friends.
From its drizzly Oregon setting to its jangly hipster boulder soundtrack, Life is Strange perfectly captures the feeling of teenage angst and adds a supernatural twisting that’s interesting until the credits roll.
Minecraft- Honorable mentions: Terraria
You can argue that it wasn’t until its Xbox 360 release that Minecraft entered the public consciousness, but it was and remains a culture phenomenon on PC. More than 20 million purchases on a single platform is a huge amount by any measure, but the PC version of Minecraft is also where updates drop-off first, where mods and custom servers happen, where most of the amazing video content is attained, and where educational programs are carried out.
Minecraft is also credited with kicking off or at least popularising a bunch of industry tendencies- paid early access schemes, crafting sandboxes and of course indie as multi-million dollar success tale.
Overwatch- Honorable mentions: Team Fortress 2
Overwatch’s charming cast of playable heroes inspire undying fealty in their legions of fervent fans- and it’s easily to find why. The visual design of this lavish and slickly presented competitive shooter is as stylish as its gameplay is tactical and engaging.
It might’ve been a bit light on content when it first made shelves, but Acti-Blizz’s ongoing supporting has consistently refreshed the competitive meta with tweaks and new heroes. There’s something for everyone the roster, with strong heroes in every architype- from twitch-heavy offensive characters like cyborg-ninja Genji, to slower-paced, defensively minded characters like the mounted gun Omnic Bastion.
Recently Blizzard has doubled down on Overwatch’s esports potential with the multimillion dollar Overwatch League, where teams representing cities from around the world compete for a huge award pond.
Papers, Please- Honorable mentions: Her Story
Papers, Please starts off simple- check the documents, stamp them or reject them- and get very hard very, very quickly. It’s not just the increasingly finicky regulations handed down by your government overlords and the constantly ticking clock; the misery of applicants and the escalating political tension stimulates your role as a border guard feel like a penance. Of course, it pays the bills- if and only if you do a good enough job.
Channeling a kind of generic Cold War East European flavour, Papers, Please isn’t really about any specific place or time so much as it is about depressingly universal themes of hope, hopelessnes, bureaucracy and everyday people whose lives are just grist in its mill.
PayDay 2- Honorable mentions: Hotline Miami
Oh sure it came out on consoles, including current-gen, but the PC version is simply the best PayDay 2 experience. Not to get all Master Race on you, but PC multiplayer aficionados are generally better equipped to deal with the kind of gameplay PayDay 2 fosters and often demands- leadership, teamwork, communication and patience, as opposed to racing to get the most kills.
Overkill Software has kept up support with new content and patches for PayDay 2 over the years, and you are able to even play the game wholly in VR. There’s always something new to find and collect, and the nature of the game means even running the same missions repeatedly can have wildly different results. Get a crew together, example the joint, and go for the loot.
Pillar of Eternity- Honorable mentions: Planetscape Torment, Wasteland 2
Once again, imagine if this were a list of the best PC games of all time. Clearly it would not be complete without a bunch of Infinity Engine games like Baldur’s Gate and Planescape Torment , not to mention other classic CRPGs like Fallout. In the absence of these vintage treasures we offer Pillars of Eternity, a love letter to a golden age of PC RPGs, crowdfunded to be the successor fans wanted even if they did have to wait ten years for it.
Pillars of Eternity is remarkably faithful to the formula, with a huge casting of diverse, complex characters, robust customisation and oodles of compelling content. If you’ve never tried a classic CRPG it may not be the very best basic starting point, but if you’re even partly interested you’ll find plenty to love.
It’s sequel, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, is a brilliant game too- and well worth the investment if you enjoyed the first.
Portal 2- Honorable mentions: The Witness, SUPERHOT
Portal 2 is a victory of clever design and exceptional world-building, managing to make the player feel like they’re ingeniously breaking the game at every turn, when that was the correct solution all along.
It’s not just top-quality puzzles that constructs Portal 2 stand out from the crowd though- there are plenty of laughs from Ellen McLain’s star turn as GlaDOS, writer of The Office and Extras Stephen Merchant as Wheatley, and the lovably stupid turrets.
Project Cars 2- Honorable mentions: DIRT Rally, Assetto Corsa
When you think of the lackluster recent efforts from once great racing series, it’s brilliant to ensure new names lining up at the grid. Project Cars 2 is a strong racing sim that offers a solid driving experience, great visuals, and tons of licensed supercars to push to the limit.
Racing fans are notoriously hard to please, but there are some growls that have to be aired. The aggressive AI is sometimes difficult to deal with and penalties can feel unjust, while some players report issues with graphical stuttering. If you can get things tuned how you like them though, Project Cars genuinely hits the place.
PUBG- Honorable mentions: H1Z1 Battle Royale
Though the fervour around PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds may have cooled somewhat in recent months, it was better provides one of the tensest competitive shooting experiences around.
With a stronger focus on realistic weapons and environments than it’s cousin, Fortnite, PUBG laid the groundwork for the battle royale genre to take the world by storm. Not merely does it require intense concentration to hold your nerve as you stalk the large surroundings in search of unsuspecting prey, but the bursts of explosive activity require deadly precision and lightning-fast twitch skills.
It’s still buggy and rough, but there’s tons of fun left to be had.
Rainbow Six Siege- Honorable mentions: Insurgency
When it first released to decent reviews, we don’t believe anyone expected Rainbow Six Siege to have the sheer staying power it’s demonstrated since it dropped in 2015.
Now in its third year of consistent content updates, Six Siege offers something different in the competitive shooter space. There’s less emphasis on all-out fragging, in favour of coordinated team maneuvers in tight, destructible environments. Get used to constantly evaluating the bullet-repellant abilities of every surface around you- and try not to let the habit bleed into your everyday life.
You choose from nearly 40 Operators- each with their own kit and special abilities- and fighting in various categories of small squad game modes. Year Three kicked off with Operation Chimera, which added a new PvE horde mode where you fight infected zombie-ish animals.
SOMA- Honorable mentions: Outlast
Back when YouTubers only attained hundreds of thousands instead of millions of dollars, squealing at jump-scares was in vogue and Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Dark Descent was many content creator’s go-to. But while it won popularity for its noisier moments, what Amnesia did better than pretty much anything else was create a creeping gothic ambience that dripped tension and menace- so that when something did inevitably emerge from the dark “youre ever” good and ready to shit your gasps.
Five years later, with a few lessons learnt and a new sci-fi setting, Frictional re-emerged with SOMA, an exceptionally immersive and unsetting experience that stays with you far past the game’s near ten-hour runtime.
SOMA improves on everything that stimulated Frictional’s back catalogue great, as well as being mechanically tighter too. As you explore the underwater PATHOS-II research facility, solve light puzzles, and investigate the mystery of your surroundings, things start to get weirder and weirder before the tension reaches its crescendo at the game’s disturbing conclusion.
Starcraft 2- Honorable mentions: Warhammer 40 K Dawn of War 3
The StarCraft franchise was essential to the growth of the eSports scene. Shooters have always been important, and MOBAs have risen to prominence these days, but the tens of millions of dollars handed out at prizes at tournaments today would never have passed without Starcraft. What says eSports more than a packed arena of cheering Korean fans threatening to Zerg Rush their heroes on the stage?
Starcraft 2 is the template that most modern competitive RTSs follow, and has earnt the reverence that it’s afforded in the gaming community.
Stardew Valley- Honorable mentions: Slime Rancher, Farming Simulator 17
Stardew Valley is simply the best farming sim around. While it might not be the most realistic, or the most visually impressive, Stardew Valley more than induces up for those working deficits with exceptional charm and oodles of magical moments.
The game centres around the player’s revival of their grandfather’s dilapidated old farm, raising livestock, sowing crops and making food to sell at marketplace. There’s also a number of light RPG parts where you can fight through dungeons filled with ogres, craft items and forge relationships- some of them romantic- with the townsfolk in surrounding villages.
Developed almost single-handedly by designer and programmer Eric ” ConcernedApe ” Barone, Stardew Valley shows how a clear vision exacted by a lean team can produce something that’s severely special.
Sunless Sea- Honorable mentions: Don’t Starve
“Eat your crew” is a hell of a tagline, and you will eat them, at the least once. This unusual rogue-like is set in the same fascinating universe as browser-based escapade Fallen London, but in addition to the darkly beautiful fiction this time there’s a stressfully difficult survival and exploration game to conquer as well.
Roaming the Sunless Sea in silence as your food and fuel ticking ever downwards, eyes and ears straining for any sign of ogres or pirates, hoping to find a port in need of whatever bizarre cargo you’re carrying – it’s a unique and challenging experience. Survive long enough to pass a trait to your successor and begin constructing a heritage of captains; Sunless Sea is not a game to be conquered in a single lifetime.
The sequel, Sunless Skies, is currently out in Early Access, but due a full release soon.
The Forest- Honorable mentions: Ark, Dying Light
Early Access survival-crafting games were all the rage in 2014, but while some remain in a perpetual state of beta, others are actually coming out as full releases and starting to look properly good.
The Forest situateds itself apart from its contemporaries by being both a fulfill resource-gatherer and spoopy as flippin’ heck. You find, the wooded peninsula that your player-character determines themselves on isn’t as idyllic as it first seems. Infesting the woodland and network of subterranean caves is an intelligent society of cannibalistic mutants that grow more twisted and freaky the deeper you delve.
During the working day- while the mutants are less aggressive – you have to stockpile your resources and craft a fortified base, because come nightfall you’re going to need everything you are able to lay hands on to fend off the ravenous beasties.
The Stanley Parable- Honorable mentions: The Beginner’s Guide, Firewatch
Nominally a game with a very straight forward if surreal story line and a clever narration gimmick, The Stanley Parable only opens up for those who wilfully play with it. While many games expend a great deal of effort ensuring the player knows they have to go from A to B and trying to prevent them doing anything else, The Stanley Parable openly engages with the tropes of modern story-driven gameplay by rewarding you for doing the things a few gamers will always do: disobey. Wander off. Fiddle. Wall hack.
In this sense, The Stanley Parable is one of the very few gaming experiences with a narrative to tell and respect for its players as more than a passive vehicle for the creator’s artistic vision. Also, it is hilarious.
The Witcher 3- Honorable mentions: FF 15
Few games are lauded with as much ardor as The Witcher 3, and it truly deserves every plaudit. This is the high-watermark for character-lead RPGs, constantly telling richly layered and engrossing tales across its main quest, side missions and narrative DLC.
The Witcher 3 follows Geralt of Rivia throughout the Northern Kingdoms on parallel quests to find Emperor Emhyr var Emreis’ daughter, Ciri, and solve the mystery of The Wild Hunt.
Geralt’s world is densely populated with Monster Hunts, hidden rich, and secrets to uncover, entailing you are able to spend well over 100 hours finding it all- as well as mastering the deep potions and crafting mechanics and combat ability tree.
The DLC packs are some of the best around too, meaningfully upgrading the core experience with even more quests to devour and areas to explore.
Titanfall 2- Honorable mentions: Battlefield 1
In 2010, some of the top brass behind the world-conquering Call of Duty franchise left Infinity Ward to find their own studio: Respawn Entertainment. After a spluttering start with the multiplayer-only Titanfall, they found their feet- critically at the least- with the brilliant Titanfall 2.
By blending the same frantic action and eye-bulging set pieces that stimulated Modern Warfare’s campaign live so long in the memory with an affecting buddy-movie storyline, Respawn crafted one of the best shooter campaigns in years.
It might not be the longest, but is often on sale for cheap.
Total War Warhammer 2- Honorable mentions: Warhammer: Vermintide 2
For years, Creative Assembly has been king of the historical strategy war game. With Total War Warhammer 2 they’ve brought the same ingenuity and depth to the table, just this time you’ve get Lizardmen instead of Carolingians. And when is anything not improved by the addition of Lizardmen?
Owning the first Total War Warhammer as well as the second is pretty much a necessity, since it unlocks a ton of content in this more recent game, but it’s worth it for the life-consumingly awesome campaign mode where you take part in an epic battle to control the Great Vortex.
Undertale- Honorable mentions: Kentucky Route Zero
The breakout indie hitting of the last few years, Undertale won hearts the world over by perfecting the delicate balance of in-joky, referential witticism without overdoing it.
Developed virtually single-handedly by inventor Toby Fox, it’s not just the story that induces Undertale special, but also the variety of its combat mechanics and puzzles. It might look like a typical retro JRPG throwback, but there’s a lot more going on than first satisfies the eye.
There’s also an entertaining meta-narrative that gives you a properly compelling reason to run two or three different play-throughs, and memorable soundtrack that blends classic game sounds with haunting piano and guitar.
West of Loathing- Honorable mentions: Jazzpunk
Back in the working day, flash adventure games were awesome. They might not have been the most graphically impressive, but they more than made up for it with sharp humour and chuckles-a-plenty.
West of Loathing is like the best flash comedy-RPG you’ve ever played- full of silly jokes, clever puzzles, and a simple combat system that’s fun without doing anything too fancy. Every area across the stick-figure Wild West has the potential for chuckles, and- like the best cowboy gunslingers- the jokes reached more than they miss.
What Remains of Edith Finch- Honorable mentions: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Gone Home
Modern narrative adventure games- sometimes pejoratively referred to as” walking simulators”- can often prioritise style over substance and start to crumble under their own pretence. What Remains of Edith Finch however, is a exceptional journey through the lives of the Finch family, as told through a series of varied and delightful vignettes.
One minute you’re exploring the eerie rooms of the Finch household, then you’re flying through the air as an owl, or swimming as a shark in the ocean. The narrative is still at the center of its own experience, but the new levels of interactivity and inventive storytelling that developer Giant Sparrow has managed to craft into What Remains of Edith Finch make it a real standout.
World of Tanks- Honorable mentions: World of Warships
A former VG24/ 7 editor once called World of Tanks ” niche” on Twitter and was wailed at for days. The competitive online shooter has a huge and devoted playerbase from all over the world, because, it is about to change, the desire to get in a tank and blow up someone else’s tank is quite universal.
If you get really into it, World of Tanks can be incredibly expensive. There’s a massive variety of premium tanks available for buy, and its premium model in general is particularly aggressive. However, the glacial firing rates of your hulking war machines make for something truly unique in the online shooter space, forcing players to stance themselves strategically and overcome foes tactically rather than with brute force.
On PC, the piece de resistance is World of Tanks’ recent 1.0 update. By some miracle Wargaming kept the same minimum requirements while entirely overhauling the game’s graphics engine to bring it in line with current gen gaming. You can run World of Tanks on a potato too, so it’s good for those of us that aren’t blessed with infinite coffers.
World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth- Honorable mentions: Guild Wars 2
There’s life in the old girl yet. While it might not be at its pre-Cataclysm peak, World of Warcraft continues to be played by millions of subscribers around the globe.
Endlessly imitated, WoW streamlined and standardised the blueprint for a modern MMO with its rich lore, differed action-RPG gameplay and deep roster of high-level and endgame activities. As a new player, the sheer quantity of content to slog through is a daunting proposition- especially when you’re forking out $15 a month for the privilege- but there’s a reason this game is venerated above all others.
The upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, introduces four new races to the mix, raises the level cap to 120, as well as adding a host of new dungeons and raids including the golden city of Atal’Dazar.
XCOM 2- Honorable mentions: Templar Battleforce
PC has always been the home of turn-based tactics, and there are few games out there that do the genre better than XCOM 2. Set 20 years after the first XCOM reboot, Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2 freshens up the formula with a higher tempo to the gameplay and new mechanics like the concealing phase, which lets you carry out covert missions while you remain undetected.
XCOM 2 is a tough game, and it can feel a little capricious when your highly-trained super soldiers miss their target from point blank range, but it’s that moreish difficulty that keeps you coming back for time and again.
Your soldiers are vastly customisable, so it’s great fun to give your squad their own panache and personality- or recreate your favourite characters from other games. The only drawback is that it’s all the more heartbreaking when their head is inevitably squished by a hostile foreigner.
Battlefield 5- honest mention
The latest title from DICE assures us return to WW2 for some truly innovative and exciting FPS action. While items like the Union Jack gas mask might be a bit tone deaf, Battlefield 5 captures the camaraderie described by those who survived through the war, whilst giving you a taste of the horrors that would have ensued on the battlefield. War is hell, after all.
You can play the single-player War Stories that take you across different theatres of war or leap straight-out into its multiplayer, with an emphasis on tactics and positioning over twitch skills and a keen focus on team-playing and support classes.

Today I dealt with each thing as it came up. I woke this morning after a lovely sleep in to 37 pieces of feedback on the article I'm writing and they're all super valuable but every time I make the suggested changes I feel like it sounds less and less like me. Every time I get to the next one I have this internal struggle between a good suggestion from a person I trust that looks right, and feeling like I'm losing myself in my own text. I also found out that a campaign I organised for IANTTKY would need to be rescheduled. We eventually worked out a new time but it's left a gap that I will have to fill in the meantime. We were supposed to play World of Warcraft with Alison this afternoon but we are completely broke until payday so Alison lent us the money for sub time, except the money transfer which has always been and is advertised as instant didn't go through straight away which we only worked out after an hour or two of fucking around and calling the bank for an inadequate explanation, which they provided as condescendingly as possible. After we'd given up on World of Warcraft for the day Emily happened to find something on line which upset her in an unexpected way and so we spent a good couple of hours working through that and dealing with her head stuff around that which was super valuable but took a lot of spoons from both of us. I had a shower to get ready for I Am Not Trying To Kill You and Emily came and sat with me cause I knew I was emotionally pretty low which was great but she had to go back to her desk when I was trying to get dressed and being shouted at by the bird so that definitely took longer than it should have due to moods. I also wanted to do weird makeup again for the stream today and I had some cool ideas but it was pretty obvious that I had gone into "this looks weird but not in a cool way" territory with my first attempt and only managed to salvage some of it with some fixes. Still looked weird but at least it was ok enough to go on stream. The game of The Quiet Year was actually super rad though. The audio issues were easier to manage thanks to the changes in my setup and we had a really amazing and fun time actually playing the second half of the game together so that was a total win. Tomorrow, I've got a full day at work and I'm kind of dreading it just because I don't feel like I'm rested and ready enough but that's the drum beat I'm marching to sonic just hope I can find a nice focus for my work for the day. - by acegiak.net
