Hi, imma start by saying I love your blog and work. I was wondering what your opinion was on The cabot family/quest in fo4. Mostly Jack Cabot. I personally really loved the quest and wish it can be somehow used to make similar quests in the future. Thanks in advance for answering my ask. 😊

A little smattering of caps for this one, but thank you for the kind words! 💙💛
While I can't help but feel a pull to compare the Cabot family with the Cullen family from Twilight, I actually think that makes them more interesting as characters overall. What does one do with eternal life, especially if it's bought with the suffering of your own father? Are the Cabots merciful, or monsters? I actually see the imprisonment of Lorenzo Cabot as a sort of narrative parallel to the Institute and synths - the Institute argues that keeping synths imprisoned is for their own good, for the Commonwealth's own good, and there is plenty of in-game evidence to support either side of that argument. Lorenzo, meanwhile, is 100 percent the villain that the Institute makes its escaped synths out to be, but the question of whether Jack is justified in keeping him imprisoned still stands. What rights does a telekinetic madman have? Should the Cabots be allowed to use his powers to prolong their lives? How long would he even remain contained if they were to pass away of their extreme old age?
And that's not even getting into the Cabot family's existential logistics. How do you dodge the inevitable questions? How do you let go of the friends and family that you had, outside the circle of immediate relatives? Do you bother making new connections? Do you find them distractions at best, disposable at worst? How do you view time, as more and more years pass and the country around you begins to crumble and grow dangerously desperate? Do you try to stop the decline, and risk everything? Do you hide and hope your wealth and influence are enough to keep you safe from nuclear fire? And how did Edward Deegan and the rest of the Cabot family's ghoulified associates feel, after the bombs fell and their superiors continued on unaffected, forever youthful? The agony of basic existence as a ghoul is perhaps best reflected in characters like the Cabots and the sole survivor, who don't suffer the usual consequences that come with Fallout-bestowed immortality. As the Vault-Tec rep said, ghouls had to get to the future "the hard way."
Finally, I just like seeing aliens and kooky mind powers in Fallout (I adored Fallout 3's Mothership Zeta DLC and Fallout 76's Invaders from Beyond event, despite their flaws). It's a sign that the writers aren't taking themselves too seriously, while still paying homage to vintage pulp science fiction. And full disclosure, I'm the person who spent half their time playing Skyrim just wandering around Dwemer ruins, utterly entranced, so the idea of a buried city in the middle of the Rub' al Khali immediately piques my interest. I just have to temper it with a self-reminder that "ancient aliens" narratives can take away the historic accomplishments of real-world peoples: The lost city in the Empty Quarter may really surface someday, and it wouldn't do to diminish its builders by tying it to extra-terrestrial influence. Still, I wouldn't mind some alien-centric quests tied to the Cabot family's adventures after sorting out the business with their patriarch. Maybe luring aliens in with the artifact in order to study them, or using it to root out other alien artifacts across the Commonwealth for Jack's research.

a sneak peek of that cabot house thing I said I was gonna do
“You’re right,” Kennedy stated loudly, in a desperate attempt to keep him from walking away. It seemed to work, because for a second, he stopped. “What mom did to you was horrible. You deserved to grow up like I did, with a family, with people who cared about you.”
Kendrick turned, scanning her with confusion spread across his smooth features.
“But, I’m here now. And leaving this time isn’t taking it out on me, or mom. All you’re doing is hurting yourself. I searched for you because I want you in a family of my own. The only thing is… I can’t be here for you if you won’t let me.”
He looked away, a bad attempt at hiding the tears that were pooling at the bottom of his eyes. He might’ve been eighteen, but at that moment, staring at his big sister, he felt like a defenseless child.
“How do I know that you won’t throw me out to the dogs at the first inconvenience like she did?” He muttered, hardly loud enough for her to hear.
“You’re my little brother,” She dared to step closer, and this time, he didn’t move back. “We might not have grown up together, but that doesn’t change the fact that I care about you. I would still care about you even if you were a strung out druggie begging in the streets of Goodneighbor, because that’s what I’m supposed to do.”
She sucked in a deep breath as her brother’s light blue eyes finally overflowed with tears, which he wiped off quickly.
“Mom may not have wanted you, but I do,” Kennedy finalized, glancing down at her feet. He didn’t respond, and she took that as a sign he was about to walk away again.
But suddenly, just as she was about to turn and leave, he crashed into her, sinking into her embrace like a child that had never experienced someone that truly cared for them before. He was trembling against her. For a moment she just stood, letting her arms snake around her little brother like a protective shield. He was crying, clinging to the back of her duster, and she held him.
One sibling down. Six more to go.

Characters That Could Have Been Companions
Edward Deegan - It probably wouldn’t make sense for Edward to become a companion considering he works for Jack. But keep in mind that based on the choices you made at the end of the quest, Edward would no longer be in Jack’s employ. Edward seems like a reasonable, quiet and cool headed guy with an open mind. I also just really like Edward’s design. Maybe it’s his longer face but he doesn’t look like a generic ghoul. A solid character all round.
Jack Cabot -  Just imagine the dialogue you can have with Jack as you travel the Common Wealth. He’s well over 200 years old and would offer interesting history and lore before and what happened during the fallout. Also consider how much of a missed opportunity it is that you couldn’t ask him to make a cure for MacCready’s son Duncan. Instead of finding the cure just siting on a table in a depilated building after 200 years. Jack as a companion may want to use his knowledge to help the people in the Common Wealth before his last days.  Jack seems  very curious, maybe a bit overly excitable about his passions and it bit of a brat when annoyed. Just listen to his dialogue when he tells Edward not to interrupt or when his mother asks him to look for Emogene. I think his annoyed quips could be really funny.
Emogene Cabot - Emogene has a lot of story potential. The terminals says after what happened to her dad she changed. When we meet her she seems to be lashing out and going on drunken stopers with questionable men. The relationship with her family is a bit rocky. Jack’s seems to be completely over her antics. Her mother worries but they also fight over the serum that keeps them young. Emogene could have had a personal quest where she comes to terms with whatever feelings she has on her family and their situation. She may not seem good in a fight but it is implied the serum gives the Cabot family increased strength. So I wouldn’t worry she can’t hold her own. She be like Cait except she for chems she like alcohol and likes when you’re mean. After her quest she dislikes alcohol and likes charity.
Mel & Sonya - I just really like Mel from The Big Dig Quest. He had some funny interactions with Bobbi No Nose. Seems like he would have humor similar to Deacon. But unlike Deacon who uses rifles, Mel is a melee fighter and Sonya’s pulse would stun robot enemies.
Darla - You like being bad? Darla does. She was willing to kill her mobster boyfriend because the sole survivor can charm her into thinking they’re more of a badass than her mobster boyfriend. The more mean and blood thirsty you are the better. Maybe don’t take her to dilapidated places. She’s not a delicate flower but her nice dress and hair implies that she still likes a cushy life style.
Honorable mention
Pickman - A companion that is a serial killer could make for an interesting challenge. By interesting I mean if you like to suffer. If you’re one of those players who plays survival or defeating Fallout 4 with only a stimpack type players.  Pickman is an unhinged character that insta-kills you because he didn’t like the options you chose. You think the raider amor and weapons looks cool? You better use it on unless you want to be insta-killed. Did a raider ask you to do something and you responded with anything but no? Dead.
Sidenote, how terrify would it be while having the Nuka Cola World dlc installed and you play as a raider there’s a random encounter where Pickman insta-kills like the mysterious stranger. You’re just walking around the raider camp and there’s a kill cam of a random raider. You the player run over to the body and find Pickman’s calling card. Or maybe when you’re aligned with raiders it happens to you.

Finishing up the Cabot storyline:
1-2, poor attempt at post apoc noir club.
3. I didn’t make any friends with the fun missionaries
4-6: resolving Jack’s daddy issues.
also 6: I’m not a fan of the Enclave Armor’s looks, never have been, but it does seem more optimal in some respects. we’ll see. (I still have mismatched legs of t 45d and t60b legs bc I haven’t upped the weight limits on the legs that came with this suit

The other day I was playing FO4 and an NPC told me that synths were completely synthetic.
All this time, I assumed the synths in the Commonwealth were at least part organic because it's well established that they were made from Father's DNA. I mean . . . that's why he's called Father. It's also the entire plot.
I guess they weren't actually made from his DNA but were modeled after it. To be honest, I can't remember Father's explanation because I tend to space out when he's talking.
You know, if this was the case, it would fit my theory well.
Disclaimer: I am not that familiar with FO lore because I'm not as invested in it as I am with other games (see my tag #obsessed nerd/obsessive nerd). Use that to discredit me or hand-wave my opinions as a fan, but whatever. This is my theory.
I have a theory that pre-war people are all super human compared to post-war people simply because they are unradiated.
Look at the Cabots. All of them -- the sister Emogene especially -- can fight and are strong. Emogene walks around the post-apocalyptic world like it's nothing, smashing any raiders that get in her way. Sound familiar? Yeah. She sounds like the SS.
I guess you could say it was their father's whacked out blood that was making the Cabots strong. I can't remember if the family started taking the blood before or after the war.
Point is, pre-war people aren't super human, it's just that all the modern people are weak because they've been exposed to radiation for 200 years, so the unradiated pre-war people, who are strong by comparison, seem like gods to them.
This would explain why the Institute would kill all the other members of Vault 111. Imagine if SS and all her/his neighbors all woke up and decided to take over the Commonwealth. They would all be gods among weak, radiated people. And maybe some of them would be assholes who would rule as tyrants, or else just go on a killing spree. To be safe, the current Institute director ordered all the pre-war people in the vault killed simply because they -- being unradiated and thus "super human" -- posed a potential threat.
I mean, it was enough that they were taking Shaun, a pre-war human, inside the Institute. They brainwashed Shaun heavily growing up, because if he wasn't properly afraid of the surface, he would easily just kill everyone in the Institute and leave if he wanted. They successfully brainwashed him and he never left, even became loyal and afraid of the surface enough that he never went up once except after meeting you.
More support for this theory: because the synths were modeled after Father's DNA (and thus after the sole survivor's), the synths -- and coursers especially -- are typically stronger than humans.
This is why the SS can kill a courser and sees it as nothing, while everyone else is piss-in-their pants afraid of them: the coursers were modeled after pure, pre-war DNA. So they have those "super powers" of a pre-war human, namely the SS.
It seems this knowledge of a pre-war human's superior vitality wasn't passed down in the Institute, as Justin Ayo expresses bafflement that you were able to defeat his courser.
Either that, or Justin Ayo was testing you to see if you had figured out that you could easily kill everyone in the vicinity -- coursers included -- on your own. He was testing the waters, trying to see if you were ignorant of your own power or if you were truly a threat.
I'm more inclined to believe he was simply testing you to see if you’d figured things out. I’d be surprised if Justin Ayo didn’t have access to a lot of knowledge being SRB.
The other scientists, however, seem baffled at your strength. During "A House Divided," they are shocked when you manage to get past a couple Gen 1 synths and some turrets -- which should be laughably easy at this point -- and can't believe it when you continue to plough through everything they throw at you.
So, the strength, vitality, and danger of pre-war humans seems to be a secret that only a few Institute scientists are privy to.
Perhaps Father, after becoming Director, (and now a harmless old man who couldn’t benefit from the knowledge) learned the truth about pre-war strength and realized that you were probably incredibly powerful and could survive the Wasteland. He released you from the vault, lured you to him, and then once he met you, couldn't even tell you why he would so coldly send you into danger. During the conversation on the roof stop after Bunker Hill, he couldn't tell you about your own super powers because, at that point he still doesn't feel as if he can completely trust you not to massacre his people.
So if all this was true, imagine how that rooftop conversation went for Shaun. He confesses to doing a terrible thing by releasing his own parent into a highly hostile environment where death is a certainty -- I mean, most people would have enough decency not to do this to a random stranger, let alone their own parent, however estranged -- so to the SS, he just sounds cold and cruel. But deep down, he knew you would probably survive simply because you were pre-war and unradiated (though it was still a dick thing to do).
In past posts, I’ve often referred to Father as cold and cruel. I was not saying this because I hate the character (I don’t really) but because it’s a fact. He was raised like a guinea pig in a lab. He was such a void that he had to use science -- the only thing he knows -- to run an experiment on his own parent just so he could understand what love is.
That’s how fucked up the Institute made Shaun. Sure, he seems well-adjusted, but he’s actually not. I think the FEV labs are evidence enough of that. Do you really think people in the Institute were hugging Shaun and tucking him in with bedtime stories and actually loving him? Kellogg being such a dick about that -- by sarcastically assuring you that Shaun is in a good place where he’s safe and loved -- was such  a shitty thing in hindsight.
The seeming super strength of pre-war people would also explain why the SS is so extraordinary. Everyone in the Commonwealth is in awe of the SS (Deacon being their number one fan). They're an overpowered god walking around, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. And it's because they aren't radiated and can even become immune to it, while retaining their pre-war vitality -- unlike pre-war ghouls, who have been weakened by the radiation like everyone else.
Basically, pre-war people are stronger than post-war people and pretty much every other splinter race of radiated human -- super mutants, ghouls -- because they are unradiated.
