currently thinking of starting a fallout story where all the long lost children of Emogene Cabot find each other around the commonwealth. Main character will probably be a girl and her kid sister who still lives in Cabot house but leaves when Emogene tries to make her take the serum. Her goal is to find all of the siblings written in one of Emogenes diaries. (With the help of a companions, Mac, Deeks, Valentine, or Hancock, haven’t decided yet)

Hi, imma start by saying I love your blog and work. I was wondering what your opinion was on The cabot family/quest in fo4. Mostly Jack Cabot. I personally really loved the quest and wish it can be somehow used to make similar quests in the future. Thanks in advance for answering my ask. 😊

While I can't help but feel a pull to compare the Cabot family with the Cullen family from Twilight, I actually think that makes them more interesting as characters overall. What does one do with eternal life, especially if it's bought with the suffering of your own father? Are the Cabots merciful, or monsters? I actually see the imprisonment of Lorenzo Cabot as a sort of narrative parallel to the Institute and synths - the Institute argues that keeping synths imprisoned is for their own good, for the Commonwealth's own good, and there is plenty of in-game evidence to support either side of that argument. Lorenzo, meanwhile, is 100 percent the villain that the Institute makes its escaped synths out to be, but the question of whether Jack is justified in keeping him imprisoned still stands. What rights does a telekinetic madman have? Should the Cabots be allowed to use his powers to prolong their lives? How long would he even remain contained if they were to pass away of their extreme old age?

And that's not even getting into the Cabot family's existential logistics. How do you dodge the inevitable questions? How do you let go of the friends and family that you had, outside the circle of immediate relatives? Do you bother making new connections? Do you find them distractions at best, disposable at worst? How do you view time, as more and more years pass and the country around you begins to crumble and grow dangerously desperate? Do you try to stop the decline, and risk everything? Do you hide and hope your wealth and influence are enough to keep you safe from nuclear fire? And how did Edward Deegan and the rest of the Cabot family's ghoulified associates feel, after the bombs fell and their superiors continued on unaffected, forever youthful? The agony of basic existence as a ghoul is perhaps best reflected in characters like the Cabots and the sole survivor, who don't suffer the usual consequences that come with Fallout-bestowed immortality. As the Vault-Tec rep said, ghouls had to get to the future "the hard way."

Finally, I just like seeing aliens and kooky mind powers in Fallout (I adored Fallout 3's Mothership Zeta DLC and Fallout 76's Invaders from Beyond event, despite their flaws). It's a sign that the writers aren't taking themselves too seriously, while still paying homage to vintage pulp science fiction. And full disclosure, I'm the person who spent half their time playing Skyrim just wandering around Dwemer ruins, utterly entranced, so the idea of a buried city in the middle of the Rub' al Khali immediately piques my interest. I just have to temper it with a self-reminder that "ancient aliens" narratives can take away the historic accomplishments of real-world peoples: The lost city in the Empty Quarter may really surface someday, and it wouldn't do to diminish its builders by tying it to extra-terrestrial influence. Still, I wouldn't mind some alien-centric quests tied to the Cabot family's adventures after sorting out the business with their patriarch. Maybe luring aliens in with the artifact in order to study them, or using it to root out other alien artifacts across the Commonwealth for Jack's research.

Also good boy Edward Deegan, who deserves better treatment.) Rescued Emogene, got to threaten Brother Thomas and steal his stuff.

On a personal note: Sorry I haven’t been posting as much original content. I’ve been under a lot of stress lately, and my mental health has been kind of messed up. Good news is that I’m doing a bit better. I’ve been working more on the fan fiction and drawing, just haven’t gotten around to posting it yet.

I’m currently stuck on the writing portion as I feel like I need to do more research, but I don’t want to go down a slippery slope of too much research and too much information. The ADHD does not help. Sometimes I wish I had a writing buddy, lol. Not to keep to a deadline or anything, but someone to talk about ideas and stuff with.

I've mentioned before that Nora has a radiation resistance gene, but she also has this thing where when she's taken a lot of rads/is rad sick she sees and hears things. Like 'ghosts' or hallucinations, and sometimes gets pulled or influenced to do things she otherwise wouldn't.

When she learnt to drive in highschool she liked speeding. She flipped her car once and ended up in hospital with an injured arm. She has a very faint line along her arm from it. This is the only scar or blemish she starts the story with (not counting stretch marks).

She initially didn't want to be a mother, or even a wife, until she fell for Nate and then accidentally got pregnant. Both of these events greatly impacted the trajectory of her life and who she would become.

Being a mother is generally a big plot point for her even in AU's, with the people and circumstances involved influencing the choices she makes. Not always for the better either.

She comes from a well off family and made more as a JAG corps lawyer than Nate did as a soldier. They weren't rich rich but they donated to charities and the war effort, and when Nora got pregnant she only stayed working as long as she could because she dreaded the thought of being home with nothing to do. Affording Codsworth and a new family-oriented car wasn't too much of a blow to them financially.

When Nora meets the Cabot's, Wilhelmina initially mistakes Nora for her mother, who Wilhelmina had met at upper class social events. She'd also met Nora once before at one, right before she went to law school. Nora has her mothers name as her middle name and the two do look very alike, though Diane had blonde hair and blue eyes.

- alright, guess i’ll go back to the CABOT HOUSE to tie up this business. he said a week, but i’m not going to remember that, so i’ll see if i can just talk to him immediately.

- HANCOCK’s seen the LANDMINE MOLE RATS too???? what maniac keeps doing that????

- ooh, back at CABOT HOUSE the doors that previously were locked are now open!

- also JACK has a TERMINAL that i missed last time, which he’s apparently been using since 1968? he mistyped his username as JACK CAB0T lol.

    - looks like this is a log of his experiments on the ARTIFACT? he apparently tried a whole lot of different treatments, none of which worked.

    - something that pinged my interest though was that he possibly traded samples of the SERUM with military contacts through a SENATOR DESOTO - a name which we’ve seen before in his patient records, connected to ANTONIO DESOTO, who exactly 100 years, 2 months, and 20 days later was admitted “under special arrangement with family”. this is the one for whom “no treatment [was] necessary” - maybe he was supposed to be in prison but got put in PARSONS instead due to family connections? idk.

    - he also outright admits that he arrived at the SERUM through “trial and error” and doesn’t actually know how it works :|

    - EDWARD was hired in 2058 to replace the previous jeeves, who was getting on in years. i shouldn’t be surprised that it never occurred to JACK to share his SERUM with the hired help, even if they were extremely devoted and already in on the big secret :/

    - the typo in his username somehow persisted all this time despite his getting ROBCO to look into it specifically lol. sure, just call microsoft to have someone reinstall your computer software over a single glitched alphanumeric character. rich folk man.

    - EDWARD was apparently still human immediately after the bombs fell, but JACK made him work outside in the radiation anyway and that’s how he turned into a ghoul. i should’ve shot this motherfucker back at the asylum >:(

    - EMOGENE is apparently a badass, which we already knew.

        - i’m still conflicted about her - JACK was the most directly involved in this business, and it was apparently WILHELMINA’s idea to use the SERUM, but EMOGENE... idk. maybe she has a diary in here or something, but so far it seems like her choices were “toe the line and go along with what’s good for the family” or “die of old age while everyone else remains young and healthy and ostracises you forever”, and she’s just been reliving the existential crisis cycle ever since.

        - i kinda feel bad for her, actually. after a couple of decades there would’ve been no way for that to not have been an incredibly isolating experience - no way to leave without aging overnight, no way to invite anyone in if even the most trusted servants don’t get to take the immortality juice. she was trapped with this fucker and their mother forever. yikes.

Ooh, this is a nice challenge. So the rules are to go through your WIPs and post snippets containing your assigned words. This will be a little difficult for me because I don’t have any WIPs with these words, so these are completed and posted works. Let’s dive in, shall we?

From Small Acts of Rebellion (Dragon Age: Inquisition) - hold (Solas/ F!Trevelyan. Side note: This is Dorian’s POV)

Eve -- she didn't like the title of Herald or even Lady Trevelyan -- was settling on the edge of the bench Solas had set up directly behind himself to hold his pot of paint as he worked. Even from this distance, he could see the telltale slump of her shoulders and back that spoke of just how tired she was, and he very nearly called down to add his agreement with Solas's admonishment.

From Love Is..., chapter 5: Lucky (Fallout 4) - sleep (Deegan/F!SoSu)

It didn't surprise him at all, though, when the second and third egg also produced double yolks. The rad chickens Nora had brought home from wherever she had been with the synth detective were very strange creatures; of course their eggs would be just as weird. At least they smelled better than a mirelurk's.

Leaving them to fry for a moment, he turned his attention to the toaster just in time for the bread to pop up. Lamenting the lack of butter as he placed the dry toast on the plate next to a couple slices of fried cram, he entertained the thought of mentioning acquiring a dairy brahmin. He had experience taking care of cattle in his youth, as well. And they had the space in what was once the front gardens of Cabot House.

What would Wilhelmina think if she knew her stately manor was destined to become a farm? he thought with only a little impish glee as he reached for the pan of eggs to add to the plate. The german shepherd that occasionally showed up to sleep in the foyer. The rad chickens in the pigeon loft on the roof. Now a brahmin in the roses.

From Goodneighbor Good Rockin’ (Fallout 4) - freedom (MacCready/Hancock/F!SoSu. This one was heckin’ difficult to find.)

Fu--screw it! He could hide out in the VIP lounge if he spotted her at the bar.

Mind made up, he turned and exited the room.

Outside the hotel was decidedly worse than inside. Though much quieter, MacCready had to turn up his collar in an attempt to ignore the shadows and silhouettes of still more couples tucked in darkened corners and in the alley. What few Neighborhood Watchmen there were standing guard seemed to be doing the same, pointedly keeping their eyes fixed to the empty street.

Goodneighbor was all about personal freedom, but this was ridiculous!

None of his business, he told himself, walking a little faster toward the bar.

“You’re right,” Kennedy stated loudly, in a desperate attempt to keep him from walking away. It seemed to work, because for a second, he stopped. “What mom did to you was horrible. You deserved to grow up like I did, with a family, with people who cared about you.”

Kendrick turned, scanning her with confusion spread across his smooth features.

“But, I’m here now. And leaving this time isn’t taking it out on me, or mom. All you’re doing is hurting yourself. I searched for you because I want you in a family of my own. The only thing is… I can’t be here for you if you won’t let me.”

He looked away, a bad attempt at hiding the tears that were pooling at the bottom of his eyes. He might’ve been eighteen, but at that moment, staring at his big sister, he felt like a defenseless child.

“How do I know that you won’t throw me out to the dogs at the first inconvenience like she did?” He muttered, hardly loud enough for her to hear.

“You’re my little brother,” She dared to step closer, and this time, he didn’t move back. “We might not have grown up together, but that doesn’t change the fact that I care about you. I would still care about you even if you were a strung out druggie begging in the streets of Goodneighbor, because that’s what I’m supposed to do.”

She sucked in a deep breath as her brother’s light blue eyes finally overflowed with tears, which he wiped off quickly.

“Mom may not have wanted you, but I do,” Kennedy finalized, glancing down at her feet. He didn’t respond, and she took that as a sign he was about to walk away again.

But suddenly, just as she was about to turn and leave, he crashed into her, sinking into her embrace like a child that had never experienced someone that truly cared for them before. He was trembling against her. For a moment she just stood, letting her arms snake around her little brother like a protective shield. He was crying, clinging to the back of her duster, and she held him.

One sibling down. Six more to go.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the serum 👉👈

A lot of it was stuff that I had been thinking about several week/months ago but forgot about bc we were talking about other stuff. But then the whole topic of Hector using the serum on himself came up, and got me thinking even more. This is mostly just me talking in circles, though, I don’t really have a point

So what I’ve been wondering is how, exactly, the serum works, how the blood it’s derived from works, and how the experiments Hector did on the blood affected it. Because we know that regular use of Jack’s serum makes people immortal and keeps them young, but is also addictive. What confused me initially before I looked into it was whether it simply halts aging, or is regenerative enough to reverse some of the signs of age. Jack still looks fairly young, but Emogene looks older when you first meet her. Jack would have near constant access to the serum, so if it simply halted aging, then that could explain why he looks so much younger than Emogene and Wilhelmina

But according to the fallout wiki, the Cabot family also dilutes it before using it. Taking it straight also makes the user incredibly strong and resilient, which was what happened to the raiders that took it. It’s also derived from Lorenzo’s blood, which means that either Lorenzo’s blood is just Like That, or Jack modifies it in some way before he, Emogene, and Wilhelmina take it

Which leads me back to Hector, because it’s been established that he is the way he is because of the serum - or, more likely, because of Lorenzo’s blood. Any serum made from Lorenzo’s blood back when Hector was first working with Jack will automatically be different from the serum acquired ingame, because Jack has had the time to actually study the blood since then and refine it into the serum

So I think that it seems far more likely that instead of stealing some the serum itself (or at least the early, experimental version of the serum) when he left, Hector most likely would have just stolen some of Lorenzo’s blood, along with a few samples of the experimental serum and Jack’s notes (copies of his notes, anyways), and that whatever Hector did with Lorenzo’s blood afterwards either altered the way it acts completely (halting his aging without him needing to constantly take it or become addicted by boosting his regenerative capabilities), or enhanced certain properties already present in the blood. It’s possible that Lorenzo’s blood has all kinds of strange side effects, but that the refining process/experimentation simply isolated and/or enhanced specific side effects, while suppressing others

And then there’s the strength + resilience aspect of Jack’s serum, so if the same side effects are present in the unfiltered blood, then perhaps whatever Hector used on himself also had similar effects. I mean, he sure is pretty fucking resilient and hardy for a someone physically in his 60’s. It could just be because of the regenerative aspects of it, but it’s possible that that’s part of why he’s as resilient as he is (and maybe you intended for that to be the case, I don’t know, but I sure did notice it). There’s also the possibility that that “resilience boost” from the blood/serum also gave his immune system a little boost. Not enough to put him with everyone else in terms of immune system strength, but enough to make a very small, but still noticeable, difference

I’m not so sure about how the strength aspect could come into play, since he’s still not a particularly strong guy. Maybe he is pretty weak when compared to most other people, but is just a little bit stronger than you’d expect someone of his size and build to be. Or maybe the blood/serum gave him an initial boost when he took it/was actively taking it, but it has more or less worn off since then

Then there’s the regenerative aspect of it all. I know it’s not really discussed at all ingame, so it’s not really canon that the serum halts aging by boosting the body’s regenerative abilities, but I feel that would make more sense than “it just stops/reverses the aging process” because in order to do that, you need to stop a very specific type of degradation from occurring, whether by reversing some of the damage done, or by preventing it from happening altogether. Plus, we’ve already discussed and agreed that Hector can heal just slightly more than a normal person should be able to - which is why he can do some of the things he does

There’s also the fact that if you give Emogene the serum you took from the raiders, when you next see her, she’ll look young again. When coupled with Lorenzo’s physical age, the most likely scenario would be that Jack did something when refining the serum to enhance the regenerative effects enough that taking it reverses aging - albeit very temporarily, since Emogene apparently once went an entire month without taking it, and yet she still looks much older when you meet her, implying that the Cabots need a near constant supply of it in order for them to stay looking young

And then that brings us back to Hector yet again, and what he wanted to study it for in the first place. Whether or not Lorenzo is safely recontained during the raider attack on the asylum or killed, Hector is going to end up with at least one vial of the serum, and he’s going to experiment on it once he studies it, and depending on what he learns/how confident he’s feeling, he might also use some of it on himself. Which… if the serum can make someone look younger even when diluted, then even if he only uses the smallest amount on himself, he’s still very likely to end up with some questions at best, and quite a shock at worst if those particular effects decide to kick in. Like, does diluting the serum lessen the severity of how much younger it makes someone look? If Hector were to only take an extremely small and diluted amount, would it even affect him at all, would it only put him back a couple years, or would the effects be just as severe as they were on Emogene?

I still have so many more thoughts on this, but I’ve already got so much right here, so this seems like a good stopping point for now

- went upstairs and found LORENZO CABOT’S JOURNAL, which i did Not expect.

    - this is all in that terrible super-blown-up handwriting that all written notes are, so i won’t inflict a billion screenshots on y’all.

- EMOGENE also has a diary!

    - adksjha looks like unlike JACK, she actually learned how to program, and is responsible for his username still being glitched after all this time. whoever wrote this has siblings, i can tell.

    - visiting LORENZO wasn’t entirely off limits to the rest of the family, which i hadn’t really considered. apparently he put on the act of still being the same man, but EMOGENE wasn’t convinced.

    - yeah, she specifically tried many times to go off the SERUM, but viewed it as a form of suicide, which i guess technically it would be, and couldn’t go through with it. that’s a fucked position to be in.

- WILHELMINA doesn’t seem to have a diary that i can find, so i think that’s about it for the stuff up here - it appears to just be spotless bedrooms and this weird little museum hallway with generic artifacts belonging to other cultures.

- i did however find this thing back down in the lab! i don’t think this is what JACK wanted to give me, as he’s not here - i’ll still have to come back in a week to make sure. excited to find out what it does though.
