Day 7: Free Day - 1960s
@asakikuweek2024
Tumblr media
It was free day yesterday! So I drew some of my designs for these two. I normally draw Arthur a bit more formal— but I’ve been thinking about London 1960s counterculture recently. My man’s was on the King’s Road at the Chelsea Drug Store constantly. And then, Kiku in da suit, Kiku in da suit, thank you.
Also forgive me it’s not entirely historically accurate because I wasn’t thinking this was 60s when I went into it.

just had a realization about EngPan and that’s that it’s a fucking top-tier power move on Kiku’s part. like, okay Alfred, you’re gonna force me out of isolation and try to strongarm me into your little imperialist game? well I’m gonna fuck your dad. see how you like that. god what a power move. I love when I can make historical events into toxic family drama, it’s so fun, and this works particularly nicely.
some more historical context for the Anglo-Japanese Alliance is that Canada (now a semi-autonomous dominion) and the US very strongly opposed the alliance. part of this was due to racial tension, and part of it was because Japanese expansion in the Pacific threatened American expansion in the Pacific (and British commercial control in China), and the two countries were already heading down a fairly hostile path, and neither the US nor Canada wanted to even entertain the idea of fighting a war against each other because of Japan of all countries. meanwhile Australia supported the alliance, because they, rather correctly, saw an unallied Japan as a potential threat and didn’t trust the isolationist US to protect them in case of a war. (and they were right!) so the political result of all this is that despite Australian misgivings, the Canadians and Americans successfully demanded the break up of the alliance, and in exchange, the UK got some very nice naval treaties with the US and a lot of American goodwill that possibly resulted in the Lend-Lease Agreement which kept the Allies afloat in WWII... aaaand Australia getting super fucked in WWII.
so putting this in human dynamics, Kiku starts fucking Alfred’s dad, immediately pissing off Alfred beyond reason. like presumably Alfred is just absolutely seething in the background every time he sees them together, he’s so fucking angry that Matthew, who has himself only recently gotten on better terms with his twin and would very much like to remain on those good terms, starts to panic. so Matthew feels like he has to back up Alfred here and condemn dad’s new boyfriend, which in turn upsets Jack who actually likes Kiku hanging around. and in the end it finally results in Arthur dumping Kiku in return for reconciliation with his eldest, except Alfred is just way too fucking done with European bullshit at this point and goes into isolation again anyway. so Arthur is out a boyfriend, the empire just lost a valuable ally, and three of his sons are furious with him. fantastic. politics and family drama at its finest.

some rough headcanons regarding the anglo-japanese alliance: as i see it, kiku and arthur are similar as hell in many ways. a proud, ambitious old world island nation with a strong streak of tradition, but also adaptable and innovative? these two fuckers also are obsessed with birds, tbh—and there’s ambition there. as i see it, the anglo-japanese alliance feels like one of the very quid pro quo old-world style relationships. they do enjoy each other’s company, but i can envision it being more pragmatic than sentimental? like, to me, nations aren’t rigidly monogamous, but regarding arthur and kiku, imo there are other nations they will say they’ve loved (francis and jan/johan (ned) respectively)—and for centuries longer. they don’t love each other the same way they would say they do francis and jan. they’re those old world fuckers who can appear aloof and cynical—but who are capable of being intensely romantic to a very special someone (but not each other lol). so, they get along for a while on hating ivan and shared hobbies, but it’s rather a realpolitik sort of rship.
additionally, alfred’s role in this equation of pacific politics just feels like a whole lot of daddy issues on one level. because the black ships is in some ways about loudly and proudly announcing himself as capable of playing with the big boys, of projecting naval power far from home...to someone who is in many ways similar to his old man, but who, thanks to 250 years of sakoku, can’t slap him right in the face for his impudence. it’s also about gaining a presence in the pacific to compete with Lord Father and his imperial presence there too after all. it’s quite the mirroring: arthur is across the atlantic, and kiku on his other side with the pacific. there’s a rivalry with alfred on both ends of it—and it’s almost fitting that alfred saying ‘choose’ to arthur is one factor that breaks up the anglo-japanese alliance— but neither does that allow arthur to escape being eclipsed by his eldest son after 1945 either. and that’s how it ends: the old gods being defeated by the young boy-god at their own game.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Hetalia: Axis Powers Rating: General Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: England/Japan (Hetalia) Characters: England (Hetalia), Japan (Hetalia) Additional Tags: Historical Hetalia, Period Typical Attitudes, Imperialism, Mild Hurt/Comfort, Historical Inaccuracy Summary:
It’s the late autumn of 1903, and tensions are higher than ever. When an invitation to a ball in St Petersburg arrives at Kiku’s doorstep, he almost rejects it then and there, but Arthur manages to convince him to go– for the sake of maintaining peace, no opportunity to settle the affair could be missed.
That being said, the sorry state of the Russo-Japanese negotiations was far from being the only worry in their minds.

Kiku probably excel in black magic more than Arthur, but he hide it so Arthur won't feel intimidated or learn it.

Along the same lines as this post–
I also want more variety with Arthur-centric love triangles, too. I often see Francis and Alfred fight over Arthur, but how about some other possibilities?
Alfred competing with Gilbert, Natalya, Ivan, Kiku, Lovino, or Ludwig for Arthur.
Gilbert competing with Francis, Ludwig, Ivan, or Antonio for Arthur.
Lovino competing with Antonio for Arthur.
Natalya competing with Ivan for Arthur.

compilation of my Arthur ships
Arthur/Mathias: Mathias is a big proponent of safe sex but Arthur wants only the Danger Sex. toxic trashfire. in the modern day, Arthur drags Mathias down to his level; in historical settings, Mathias is the one dragging down Arthur. this ship is about nostalgia and change, or not changing.
Arthur/Kiku: lonely ♡ hearts ♡ club! ♡ do you want to be with somebody like me? ♡ also if you look to your left you'll see Arthur's family life absolutely imploding on itself.
Arthur/Francis: you know me better than literally any other person on the planet. you make me feel more loved than anyone else. I wish we didn't fight so much.
Arthur/Port (nyo or not): finally, some fucking stability. childhood sweethearts. fell head over heels for the knight in shining armor except they're both the knight for the other. classic chivalric romance.
Arthur/Feliciano: self-aware shallow whirlwind romance that could never survive any actual conflict, but it's not supposed to. pure escapism for both involved. luxury brand everything, exclusive high society, the works. it's honestly just straight hedonism.
Arthur/Gilbert: they're so fucking tired. there's an intimate camaraderie in being able to be old and tired in front of someone who feels the same. they've played the game of power, won more than their fair share of victories, and now they've lost. but it was fun while it lasted, wasn't it?
Arthur/Antonio: they're actively trying to sabotage or outright kill each other the whole time. the only actual ship content here involves piracy.
Arthur/Nor (nyo or not): magic club meets every other Thursday during the witching hour to cast spells and also kiss.
Arthur/Duncan: the least functional ship here somehow. they're two dumpster fires that combine to create the ultimate dumpster fire. unfortunately, this is how they like to live.

EngPort and Asakiku (ship bingo)
Tumblr media
They've been married for way longer than 30 years. There was the official wedding for their alliance, then there was their pirate wedding. They're just so fucking soft and I love it. One of Arthur's relationships where he feels safe enough to be genuine. Because he knows Afonso has seen every side of him, he knows how much Afonso cares, he trusts Afonso more than anyone (well except maybe Dylan but still). But as much as I love this ship they're either exes or part of a polycule with Francis and Ludwig. But they're one of the ships I have quite a few headcanons for despite them not being my main pairing. Mostly just them being soft and sweet. Peak childhood friends to lovers if you ask me.
Tumblr media
Before finding GerEng, Asakiku was my favourite Arthur pairing. Not my fav pairing ever, but my fav for Arthur. I just felt they wrote Arthur's character a bit better than the fruk fics I could find at the time. Nowadays I think it's cute but it isn't my fav Arthur ship anymore. I usually see them as exes but they also have an old married couple vibe too. Anyway, I think they're cute
