Annabeth Chase; Your ideal career
01.
You would do best with a career that allows you to add your own touch. You could feel drawn to the prospect of entrepreneurship for a reason, and that is your inate ability to understand, follow, and set trends. You may rarely inspire neutrality, as you are either adored or disliked. This can cause you some hesitation in approaching anything self-made. Nobody wants to be put on blast or have their name dragged through the dirt the second they make a mistake, especially under circumstances where you are left alone to take the blame without a team to lean on, but you do have the benefit of forethought and diplomacy to avoid the worst of it. So long as you stay true to yourself and stay genuine, you have little to fear.
You inspire others, and thus you would do well in showcasing yourself and your lifestyle, your interests and your ideas for others. You would do well in business and in sales, as well as communications. You do well with people and are able to meet others with authenticity and really hear people. You could use your skills to promote important causes or rally people towards necessary changes. A career which allows you to travel and explore the world and write home about it would be very fitting. You can easily embrace different cultures and aren't afraid of trying new things, and your desire and willingness to learn new things is quite endearing and soften up your edges, inviting more warmth to how people perceive you. A chance to provide new solutions to problems or rework how things are done by inventing or designing something new could be really successful for you.
02.
Your best bet career wise would be to turn your passion projects into more than a thing you do on the side. You're creative and may really struggle when you feel unable to extend past limitations set by others. You enjoy variety and are drawn to more unusual concepts or ways of doing things. This creativity could lend itself to many things, but to name a few you would find yourself at ease within art and music, various online endeavours, writing and design. Though you may very well be introverted or simply a little, perhaps consider yourself a little socially awkward, you would do very well when involved with people. In any job, your clientele is met with a friendly and genuine demeanour as you try to meet people as unique individuals with their own stories and needs. You could be drawn to working with animals too, as your compassionate nature lends itself well to helping not just other humans, but animals, and the planet at large.
You could dread the thought of being in the spotlight, but the kind of following you would attract would feel quite familiar to you and rather easy for you to intract with when necessary. If you were to publish a book as an example, your readers would be drawn to your work out of the inherent mutual interest in its themes and thus make interactions fluid rather than awkward. You could even consider some anonymity to protect yourself. Fun will matter a lot in whether a career fits you or not. Work will always be work, but ideally it isn't all work and no play. Having a team of kindred spirits working towards a goal helps in this regard. Even if you wish to fly solo, you're collaborative and would benefit from teamwork and helping others, as well as allowing others to help you in return.
03.
Career wise you may want a little bit of a challenge, and plenty of opportunities for advancement and change. You're ambitious and cunning, and would do well in structured environments. To name a few, you could find it fitting to pursue academia, medicine, science, law, journalism, or anything else which allows you to use your wits and ability to learn and internalize new information. You are organised and steadfast, and a phenomenal problem solver. You could invest yourself in things that leave an impact on society, such as pursuing changes in the juridical sector, pedagogy and education, health care, or politics. Dissertations, articles, or other written works of you could prove very successful and provide objectivity in a world which is ever-increasingly divisive.
You're prone to stress, however, so creating a proper work-life balance is of upmost importance. Knowing when to step away and take a break is a skill that once mastered, you'll be able to wield it in favour of your productivity and take greater leaps in your career. Remember that you work best when you're not ill, aching, and burnt out. Due to your ability to multitask and see many things through, you could work on passion projects on the side. Ex. criminologist moonlighting as a poet or a songwriter. This duality would benefit you as a side hustle which aligns with what you may consider a mere hobby could end up providing you with extra income, which you can use to take good care of yourself and make sure you get to play too.

Hey there, learners! Are you ready to dive into the world of innovation and entrepreneurship with me, your favorite snarky blogger? I hope so, because today we're talking about the one and only Steve Jobs.
Now, you might think you know everything there is to know about the co-founder of Apple. He's been idolized, analyzed, and dramatized to death in movies, books, and documentaries. But I'm here to tell you that there's still plenty to learn from this tech titan, even if you're not an Apple fanboy or fangirl.
Let's start with one of Jobs' most famous quotes: "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." Pretty bold statement, right? But the thing is, Jobs walked the walk when it came to innovation. He wasn't content to follow the crowd, copy what others were doing, or rest on his laurels. No, sirree. He was constantly pushing the envelope, exploring new technologies, and disrupting industries.
And here's the thing: you don't have to be a tech guru or a Silicon Valley insider to innovate like Jobs. You just need to be willing to challenge the status quo, think outside the box, and take risks. Maybe you're a small business owner trying to come up with a new product or service. Maybe you're an artist trying to break into a crowded market. Maybe you're just someone who's tired of the same old routine and wants to shake things up.
Whatever your situation, Jobs can teach you a thing or two about innovation. He believed that the best ideas come from a combination of intuition, creativity, and practicality. He also believed in the power of simplicity, elegance, and user experience. And he wasn't afraid to fail, or to iterate until he got it right.
So, my dear learners, let's take a page out of Jobs' book and embrace our inner innovators. Let's ask ourselves: what can we do differently? What can we improve? What can we create that doesn't exist yet? And let's not be afraid to take risks, fail, and try again. Who knows? We might just come up with the next big thing, and change the world in the process.

Four types of reading (and notes-taking) strategies
Tumblr media
The actual doing of a PhD (and research) can be simply described as reading and writing. However, this doesn't tell much about what to read, how to read, and implications for notes-taking and writing, where there are much variations exist than looking from the surface. Should I read book or paper? Full length / cover to cover or just flipping through? Should I write summary of ideas, critiques, or articles? How to organize these notes? These questions are particularly perplexing at the beginning of one's research journey / PhD journey and are easily overwhelming.
Looking back from one year into my PhD (in design, but generally applicable to transdisciplinary studies in wider social sciences / humanities), I see four types of reading that serves different purposes at various stages.
read to scan the landscape
This is the reading that takes a majority of my time in the first year of PhD. The nature of transdisciplinary study determines that a lot of grounds need to be covered before one develops an idea how her research is positioned in historical/disciplinary contexts. In this stage I read widely (and often in rotation) on topics including (looking down from my desk and on the stacks of papers on the ground):
sustainability, degrowth and postgrowth, ecological economics
theories on embodiment, practice theory, cognitive science and ecopsychology
entrepreneurship studies, entrepreneuring, sustainable entrepreneurship
action research and transdisciplinarity
postqualitative methods, more-than-human methods, non-representational theories
Ecofeminism, political ecology, environmental ethics
complexity theories
Once I was asked the question "are PhDs really that busy?", I tried to describe my confused, lost and almost drowning feeling at the start of my first year. Now I see it is a necessary stage to go through (and maybe experience again when entering new fields) as certain "conceptual system" and vocabulary needs to be established.
The purpose of this stage is not to learn by heart and each theory and author that you encounter, but to "get a rough sense" what are the important themes that interests you in concerned fields. Therefore I don't recommend reading books too early in this process and spend too much time do detailed reading and notes-taking. Sometimes even just doing abstract reading is enough. Also as in this early stage you don't necessarily have the research question, or it is still very roughly phrased, some common advices like "read with a question", or to follow Niklas Luhmann to not to quote what you are reading but make connection to your question simply don't apply.
This stage is like how life and pattern is emerging from chaos... what matters are the general feeling of the field in general, recognition of a few key authors, and identifying a few groundbreaking articles/books and good review articles.
In terms of notes-taking, I heavily rely on physical copies of paper (despite not best for the environment). Printed copies leave physical artifacts which 1) remind us their existence 2) can be re-organized and re-grouped later according to our latest conceptual model.
Tumblr media
I find writing a few points that touches me (not necessarily the authors' most important arguments) on the top of the cover page of the paper works for me. If time allows I may put them into Roam Research (my notes-taking app), but it is not compulsory. But leaving multiple traces of materials encountered, including print it out, add entry in endnote, and write down authors and book/paper titles in one central place (e.g., Roam Research, not a random notebook!) are highly recommended. This would help tramendously particularly in stage 3.
Tumblr media
2. read to understand the fundamentals
By the end of the first stage, you should be 1) developing a sense what a field is about and how it is related or different from relevent fields 2) what are the most important theories and authors that everyone start their research with. The second type of reading is therefore to single out these authors and their most important work. For papers I suggest to read them in full length. For books deep reading at least introduction chapter and selective chapters of interest. Take good notes including important definitions, concepts and quotes. Mark clearly citation and page numbers. These reading notes will be used again and again in the future for writing conference papers / journal articles / thesis.
Tumblr media
I have to admit this kind of reading is a luxury particularly given my "academic ADHD" that I described in the last post. However, I see this deep reading and engagement with important writers fundamental in forming my own thinking. Also, when presented a new theory, the first impression may be the sharpest in terms of potential conflicts with existing knowledge. This provides perfect entry for critical evaluation and development of your own thoughts. Therefore I do recommend active reading (as suggested in "how to read a book") and to write your first reactions either on the margin of the book, in a notebook or in your notes-taking system.
When it comes to this deep engagement with books/papers, notes-taking is always a struggle. On one hand, reading offline (facing book and notebook, not a screen) helps me to concentrate and think. On the other hand, offline written notes present real challenge to locate in future research. I don't have a definite answer on this yet.. Sometimes I take notes in Roam directly, other times I write notes with pen and paper (but seldomly type them into Roam). I'm also trying to take picture of my notes and upload to Roam, so that I may be able to read some of my notes when the time comes.
Tumblr media
3. read to compare and write
This is the time I'm going through right now, developing my confirmation report and some other revision / paper projects. What precedents this stage is a rough structure of the thing you are writing - an outline and a few sentences to describe what you want to write for each section. These ideas are generated from the stew of type 1 and type 2 reading, and there is no linear process to reach them. But once you've got there, then you have better idea of what is the thing you are developing based on which topics or even authors you have read.
The writing / notes-taking in this stage happens directly in the work (paper or report) I developing and serves directly the objective of dedicated section. I will collect notes I've taken in the previous stages, locate the text in books/papers that is most relevant to my goal here, and write paragraphs in the paper. Note the writing here is not general introduction of theories, but really pinned down to specific views and their connections / differences.
4. read to go beyond / get new perspectives
The way academic research, particularly PhD research, is usually framed is a constant zooming in and narrowing down. But this can be dangerous sometimes. It is not uncommon in my reading hopping across different disciplines to find scholars in different fields are concerned with very similar problems with different vocabularies. Notably there are usually certain biases within a field that are not visible from within the field but only from a completely different field.
An example is that sustainable entrepreneurship is often stuck with either three intersecting circles of social, economic and environmental and a concentric model with economic in the middle circled by the social and then the environmental. But essentially both of them has an inherent dualism, viewing human and nature goals as competing, or seeing material and energy dependence the only connection between human and nature. Reading anthropology (e.g., Descola or Ingold) provides a completely different view on this.
Again this is probably against what "proper academic research" is supposed to be, but it is my belief that a lot of value could be created by these distant comparing and making sense of. So when I have some flexibility in time, I would attend speeches and seminars that seem don't have much to do with my topic, listen to non-relevant podcast and follow some of the interesting references they provide. This kind of reading is loose and free flow, without goals in mind. But I believe in the long-term they will become seeds feeding into another cycle starting from type 1 reading.
I do acknowledge that every research is different, so should be the strategies for reading. My way of learning is quite broad which may not make sense for everyone. I do think there is a big mystery in terms of how we are reading and writing and there are different patterns in different stages. You are welcome to share yours!

dating george costanza in college headcanons below cut :)
Tumblr media
-you usually saw george towards the end of semesters, biting his nails furiously in the back of the classroom, accidentally snapping pencil leads as he tried to cram weeks of missed lectures into a few pages of his mostly blank notebooks
-you worked part-time in the small campus cafe he frequented as well, and would get distracted at the way he smiled and laughed with his friends, even when it seemed like they were poking fun at him.
-you were nervous at first to be the one to take his order, but it seemed like he didn’t really recognize you, although he was generally polite and friendly, maybe more so than his friends, even if you suspected it was because he thought it could get him better treatment (and to be fair... it did, with you). After a while, your coworkers caught onto your interest in him and conveniently let you take his table every time you worked.
-you quickly learned what he would order based on the weather, his outfit, the way the last class went, the mood he seemed to be in. you’d loiter nearby, pretending to clean another table, while he tried the coffees or sandwiches you had made, your heart fluttering every time he told his friends how good it was.
-the first time you really talked, he was in the library while you were studying. He was arguing in whispers with a librarian who wouldn’t let him check out more books because he hadn’t returned the last few, claiming they were stolen and that campus police had never looked into it and honestly, it wasn’t his fault at all!
-you took pity on him, not just because you had a little bit of a crush on him.  You also knew a big portion of your shared class’s grade depended on an upcoming project and that he really did need the books in order to pass.
-you offered to take the books up and check them out under your card, which he accepted gladly, standing awkwardly with a hand on the back of his neck, shuffling his feet while the librarian checked you out, just a little bit suspicious.
-once you had both walked outside, he confessed that he had really just lost the other books, because his dorm room was a mess, since his roommate, an odd sort of business major, was constantly coming up with entrepreneurship ideas that turned their shared space into a chaotic, cluttered workspace.
-you suggested, timidly, that you kept the books at your room, and that he come over when he wanted to work on the project.
-you ended up helping him with the project much more than you anticipated, but kept enough undeniable george-ness in it that he was able to finish and present his topic quite well
-when you went to collect your final grades, you opened your report cards together– he had passed, and was so excited that he grabbed your shoulders and kissed you, right in the middle of campus.
-realizing how many people were around, even if they weren’t paying attention, he stuttered an excuse nervously and rushed off
-a few days later at the cafe, he came in and sat at his usual table. You gathered up your courage and went over, saying hello softly, asking if he would like what your best guess was, based on how it was sunny out but not too hot, how he was alone, and how he looked like he needed some cheering up despite having all the cause to celebrate because of passing the class.
-he looked nervous but chuckled at your guess, saying that yes, that’s just what he was thinking of getting.
-when you came back with his food, you asked if he wanted anything else, lingering for just a second.
-”um, my number, maybe?” you prompted, hopefully. “For the break, i thought– maybe we could hang out.”
-he turned pink, choking on the coffee he had just taken a sip of. “Oh– oh, uh, yeah. Yeah, that would be great.”
-you managed to write it down for him before running to the back to grin wildly, unable to hide your excitement.
-he called you that afternoon, surprisingly, rambling on about how he was so worried you had given him the wrong number on accident or to play a joke on him, and how he would’ve waited a few days to be cool but he knew he would just drive himself crazy worrying about it if he tried to wait– you had to interrupt him after a while to say it was okay, that you were worried he wouldn’t call you at all too, and that you were really happy he had
-you ended up going out that night, both too excited to wait, even if it made you uncool
-he took you to a nice little dinner spot, perfect for college student budgets, and you took him to your favorite place to sit and study on campus, although you didn’t study at all, watching the sun set together before sharing your real first kiss, and then, in between talking and complaining about your lives, gradually just shamelessly making out as the moon started to come up, pulling away and giggling whenever other people walked by
-you found that you were both a little jaded, decidedly uncool, and aside from your coworkers and his two friends, largely unsocial, so you spent the next semester together as well, studying and.. not studying.

Introduction: The Digital Frontier of Entrepreneurship
In today's digital age, the rise of the internet and technology has revolutionized the way we do business. It has opened a world of opportunities for entrepreneurs to start and run their own businesses online. Online businesses offer flexibility, scalability, and the potential for global reach. This comprehensive guide will provide you with a step-by-step framework for building a profitable online business from the ground up. Whether you want to start a side business or build a full-time online empire, follow this ultimate guide to turn your idea into a thriving, sustainable online business. With focus, grit, and commitment to continuous improvement, you can build the profitable online business of your dreams.
Selecting a Niche and Business Model: The Foundation of Success
The foundation of every successful online business is choosing a profitable, in-demand niche and a business model tailored to your goals. Select a niche you're passionate about; this will make creating content a breeze. Conduct thorough keyword research to assess search volume and demand. Join relevant online communities to connect with your audience and understand their needs. Evaluate direct competitors in the niche and aim for less saturated niches or unique angles. Consider affiliate marketing potential, as some niches offer higher commissions. Assess opportunities to create multiple products and monetize in diverse ways. Examples of popular online business niches include health, fitness, personal finance, pet care, tech, travel, content marketing, home design, spirituality, language learning, and more. Choose a business model that complements your niche and provides multiple income stream opportunities. Many successful online businesses incorporate 3-4 monetization models. Some of the best online business models to consider include: 1. Blogging: Make money with display ads, affiliates, and branded products. 2. Online Courses: Sell your knowledge and expertise as courses. 3. Dropshipping: Curate and sell products without inventory. 4. Affiliate Marketing: Earn commissions promoting other companies' products. 5. Information Products: Sell online books, templates, checklists, and more. 6. Virtual Services: Provide consulting, freelancing, coaching, or other services. 7. Subscription Membership Site: Offer exclusive content or tools for a monthly fee. 8. E-commerce Store: Sell physical products, merchandising, and more. Your choice should complement your niche and offer multiple income streams. Many successful online businesses incorporate 3-4 monetization models.
Building Your Online Platform and Brand: Your Digital Headquarters
Your website or blog will serve as the headquarters for your online business. Invest time upfront in creating an optimized, professional-looking platform. Purchase a domain name that matches your brand, ideally a .com if available. Select reliable web hosting with optimal speed and uptime. Install WordPress or ecommerce platforms like Shopify or WooCommerce. Design an on-brand, mobile-responsive theme that conveys your style. Include essential pages like Home, About, Contact, Services, Blog, and Shop. Set up email marketing and analytics to capture leads and track traffic data. Create visually branded assets such as logos, color palettes, fonts, and graphics. Ensure a cohesive user experience across all touchpoints. If you lack web development skills, consider hiring a freelance designer to bring your vision to life. Continually optimize your website for higher traffic, leads, and sales over time. This includes technical enhancements, user experience improvements, and page speed optimizations.
Creating High-Demand Products and Services: Delivering Value to Your Audience
The key to running a profitable online business is consistently creating products and services that deliver extreme value to your audience. Popular digital products you can create include online courses, eBooks, guides, checklists, software, premium memberships, virtual events, video tutorials, templates, and more. When brainstorming products, look for opportunities to simplify lives, save time, educate, entertain, or improve outcomes for your target customers. Leverage your expertise and tap into the skills of others to create premium offerings. High-value services like consulting, freelancing, coaching, and more can also be extremely lucrative. Promote your services through your website and social platforms. Structure your offerings to passively earn income over time, such as online courses that continually generate sales vs. 1-on-1 services that require ongoing effort. Deliver an excellent user experience across your products and relentlessly optimize based on feedback to foster raving fans who refer others.
Tumblr media
Implementing Effective Marketing Strategies: Attracting Targeted Traffic
Once your online platform and offerings are ready, it's time to start attracting targeted traffic using proven marketing tactics. A diverse marketing mix is key. Some of the top strategies include: 1. Content Marketing: Create engaging blog posts, videos, and visual content. 2. SEO: Optimize your website for search engines through on-page optimization and link-building. 3. PPC Ads: Utilize platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for pay-per-click advertising. 4. Email Marketing: Build your email list with lead magnets, newsletters, and automation. 5. Social Media Marketing: Employ organic and paid tactics to engage your audience. 6. Affiliate Marketing: Recruit others to promote your products and earn commissions. 7. Influencer Partnerships: Collaborate with relevant influencers in your niche. 8. Live Events: Host local meetups or virtual events to connect with your audience. 9. Podcast Guest Appearances: Grow your authority and reach new audiences. 10. Retargeting Ads: Remarket to previous site visitors across the web. Start by focusing on 1-3 core channels, then expand your efforts over time. Pay-per-click and social ads can help quickly scale an audience, while SEO and content creation tend to be most cost-effective in the long-term. Leverage tools like Google Analytics, Facebook Business Suite, and landing page builders to optimize results across all campaigns. Don't hesitate to enlist help from digital marketing agencies and specialists.
Diversifying Revenue Streams for Maximum Profits: Building Financial Stability
Generating multiple streams of revenue is key for building a highly profitable online business. Diversification reduces risk and provides stability as each income channel goes through ups and downs. Here are some of the most lucrative online business revenue models: 1. Product/Service Sales: Your core monetization stream. Ensure competitive yet profitable pricing. 2. Advertising: Display ads, sponsorships, native advertising, etc. Set up Google Ad Manager. 3. Affiliate Marketing: Promote other company's products for commissions. Join affiliate networks. 4. Memberships/Subscriptions: Offer exclusive benefits, content, or tools for a monthly fee. 5. Events: Sell tickets for online or in-person events and training programs. 6. Dropshipping: Curate and sell products without holding inventory. 7. Physical Merchandise: Sell branded products with print-on-demand services. 8. Consulting/Freelancing: Sell your skills and expertise through 1-on-1 services. 9. Tip Jars/Donations: Allow fans to tip or donate to show support. Aim to generate income from both active efforts like service packages and passive streams like online courses that earn as you sleep. Automate processes wherever possible to scale income without increasing workload proportionally. Reinvest profits back into growing your business and diversifying income channels to create an unstoppable snowball effect over time.

Gift giving... Getting high grades... Even a potion-? Wow... Those are good suggestions- But I'm not sure which would work...
I don't really want to use a potion on him, so that's out...
And I do my best to get good grades- But I don't think he's noticed...
So that leaves gift giving!
I have a few ideas for what I could give him, but I'd also appreciate some more advice... Azul, as a studious person yourself, what kind of gift would *you* like? I'd just like to have a frame of reference, so I can choose something suitable...
-🌻
For the getting good grades part, I can make you a study guide and offer some tips on how to study. I'm sure you have heard the rumors about how I can make anyone score high grades on their exams with them barely having to study at all. Although this does come at a bit higher price than this little chitchat we're having right now.
As for gifts... Well, I personally love having people come to work at Mostro Lounge for free. But other than that, receiving books about things that interest me, mainly entrepreneurship and business, is another good one. If it doesn't have to be just items, I enjoy having some time off to go outside, maybe visit a nearby town. I do like seeing what businesses are around...
But I'm getting off topic. I'm sure everyday items such as stationary would be more than enough for your crush; as he is studious, he will most likely use them often, and that will remind him of you. If you get something with your personal touch - perhaps your favorite color or animal, or maybe even your initials on it if you're feeling quite bold - then that might help even more.

Now it's 1910, and the Davenports live surrounded by servants, crystal chandeliers, and endless parties, finding their way and finding love—even where they’re not supposed to.
There is Olivia, the beautiful elder Davenport daughter, ready to do her duty by getting married . . . until she meets the charismatic civil rights leader Washington DeWight and sparks fly. The younger daughter, Helen, is more interested in fixing cars than falling in love—unless it’s with her sister’s suitor. Amy-Rose, the childhood friend turned maid to the Davenport sisters, dreams of opening her own business—and marrying the one man she could never be with, Olivia and Helen’s brother, John. But Olivia’s best friend, Ruby, also has her sights set on John Davenport, though she can’t seem to keep his interest . . . until family pressure has her scheming to win his heart, just as someone else wins hers.
Inspired by the real-life story of the Patterson family, The Davenports is the tale of four determined and passionate young Black women discovering the courage to steer their own path in life—and love.
Review: I have to start with the obvious….LOOK AT THAT COVER! It is absolutely gorgeous. I saw this at a table at NCTE, the last book and I practically swooned. Then I grabbed it, hugging it to my chest because I was so excited to see a historical romance (because you just know) that featured Black Love. And I am not exaggerating here. I am still so in love with this cover. I couldn’t wait to read the book as I was also intrigued by its’ premise especially knowing that it was inspired by a real life wealthy Black family. I was also interested in the premise of the story being for four points of view of young women on the cusp of adulthood. And the novel delivered, in the usual and most unexpected ways.
The events in the Davenports are set during the spring and summer ball season and follows the four young women was they navigate establishing their own identities while trying to meet their parent’s expectations. Olivia is “the good daughter” who is in her second season and whose parents expect an engagement by the end of the summer. Olivia’s beliefs are challenged when she meets Washington DeWight who exposes her to the injustices Blacks were facing in 1910 - injustices that her parents worked to shield her from. With each interaction with Washington, Olivia realizes she likes being an activist and struggles with a desire to break out on her own but still please her parents. At the same time, her attraction to Washington grows and they have an interesting courtship, but to me it somewhat felt one sided at times so I didn’t get invested much in their relationship. I was really enjoying Olivia’s social awakening much more. Her younger sister Helen was so much fun to read. Helen is very mechanically minded who loves fixing cars and has ideas for her father’s company, unfortunately because her father had antiquated notions, she knew he would never listen to her ideas. I liked that her brother John supported her and turned to her for her opinions, but the sad fact was that he often has to pass off her ideas as his own to their father. My heart broke for her because Helen was such a 2000ish woman stuck in 1910. Being the youngest Helen was also a rebel and I so loved her antics. Much like Helen, Amy-Rose was a bit of a rebel as well, but she had a touch more freedom. When she was a child Amy-Rose’s mother was hired on as a maid and when her mother passed the Davenport family decided to hire Amy-Rose and now she’s in a unique position of being employed by her “friends”. I use quotation marks because there wasn’t much friendly interaction between the trio outside of when Amy-Rose was helping dress Olivia and Helen. This depiction made me wonder how close the girls really were when they were children because I couldn’t see it on the page. What I did see and loved about Amy-Rose was that she was tenacious with her dream and even though she was in love with John, she still always put herself first. She was definitely one of my favorite characters in the entire novel. The character I liked the least was Ruby because while I understood she was in a precarious position with her parents, she seemed to react to the events in the novel, rather than make her own decisions. Her father was running for mayor of Chicago and like a good daughter, she was willing to do anything to help her parents out, which is admirable, however she consistently sacrificed her agency many times in the book. Of the four, Ruby is the one character who didn’t seem to grow throughout the novel.
Having four different perspectives throughout a novel can be a challenge but I feel like Marquis pulled it off very well. Each of the chapters were told from one of the 4 POV’s and all felt very like distinct individuals. The story moved along well and I got caught up reading when I should have gone to bed, which is the mark of a good book. I enjoyed the detail to history in the book and really loved the callouts to specific landmarks in Chicago. It was clear that Marquis did her proper research for The Davenports and this dedication is what makes this a great read.

“You didn’t fail—your idea failed. Try something new.”
Tumblr media
Last week, David and I were invited to be delegates at a G20 event at Guru Nanak Dev University, which is just up the road from Khalsa College.
One of the panels at this event at GNDU was on entrepreneurship. While this is not exactly my field, I am glad I was compelled (by my status as a delegate) to attend. One of the panelists, an esteemed professor of business from Mumbai, offered the thought that I have chosen as my title.
I would say that my idea—as conceived—has failed.
Without getting into too much detail, I will simply say that several factors have contributed to this: my own naivety at what could be accomplished with a group of actors with whom I do not share a common language (unlike Kerala—where I did my first Fulbright), some particularly nasty departmental politics that became clear to David and me a few weeks after arrival, a lack of communication concerning hindrances to my project work plan, and (what I perceive) as the global effects of COVID on the current college age student. One toxic presence has done more than anything else to dismantle what I planned to accomplish. I have kept quiet about this in my blog and hoped for the best.
I am disheartened, but I also need to look at what my essential goals were for this project:
•     To connect young people with survivors of Partition in order to foster understanding about the experiences of those who came before them
•     To guide a group of young artists in creating original material based on interviews with Partition survivors
•     To provide a way for said young artists to share their original work with an audience.
All this will be accomplished.
•     I have accompanied students on interviews with people in their 80’s and 90’s who survived Partition, and witnessed the effect their stories and these connections have on my students. I have been deeply moved by the experience of sitting in the presence of these survivors.
•     David and I are working with these young actors to create, albeit slowly, original monologues out of those interviews. I understand that students at Khalsa College (and perhaps more widely in India) are not as accustomed to writing their own material, so this is a big “ask” we are making. Many are rising to the challenge beautifully. And some very generous translators have helped us to understand what is being written.
•     And we will have a sharing. It will not be a full-scale production, as we first envisioned. Given the amount of rehearsal time that has been taken from us due to various roadblocks- a full production would not be possible. We have been given a goal of the first week in April (before exam preparation begins). With that date in mind, we had to let go of the idea of a full production last week. But we will have an invited sharing at the college, and I also hope to have a lecture/demonstration at the Partition Museum and a local cultural center. I need to remind myself that if David had not been able to accompany me, these sharings would have likely been all I would have been able to offer.
I am turning my focus to things I can control (and my little living space has been getting daily cleanings-- this seems to be my way of gaining some control.) Following the advice, I am "trying something new."
•     I am booking performances of The Belle of Amherst at several colleges in Kolkata, one in Assam, and (hopefully) one theatre in Nepal.
•     I have been awarded a regional travel grant to spend two weeks teaching voice and speech at an actor training program in Nepal.
•     And I have been invited to serve on the panel to interview Fulbright applicants among Tibetan immigrants in Dharamshala in May.
I have met a lot of great people here. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. And my students are absolutely lovely people. When I am with them (those who show up) my spirit cannot resist being lifted. So-- I’ll share a few pictures of these exuberant, brave young people—and move on. The idea failed. I did not fail. And I believe these young people will take something meaningful away from this experience—as I know David and I will.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I “owe” you all a post about our wonderful return to Kerala. Maybe now that I have shared the not-so-pleasant, I can go back and share those beautiful memories!

NRC Students as Youtubers
I started the idea with octatrio as youtubers and thought it’d be fun to think of what other students would do if they were youtubers. Took a while to think of something for everyone, since some of the characters I am not super familiar with (just cause I don’t have a lot of cards of them lol). Some of them were kind of hard, but I’m fairly satisfied with what I’ve come up with.
It was fun thinking them all up and I’d love to know your thoughts on this list.
Heartslabyul
Riddle:
Lots of study with me videos. Tutors on certain subjects. Also equestrian club vlogs showing how to properly take care of horses, sorta like animal therapy type thing.
Trey:
Baking/cooking videos. Teaches the basics and really goes into details about tools, safety, temperature, etc. Mentions proper dental hygiene right after.
Cater:
Typical influencer. Vlogs, does collabs, unboxings, sponsors. Occasional singing vids alone or with pop music club. Lots of café vlogs and aesthetic shots.
Ace:
Prank channel, trolls his viewers a lot. Does lots of card tricks and magic show stuff. Vlogs a lot and they're all chaotic.
Deuce:
Tinkers with stuff a lot. Shows how to fix various things, ranging from watches to more heavy machinery. Occasional vlogs of him riding blastcycles when he goes home on holidays.
Savanaclaw
Leona:
Does a whole bunch of logic games and burr puzzles. Fairly chill live streams of chess solitaire or idk minesweeper. ASMR quality audio.
Ruggie:
Does one of those "live like college student" type of vids, where he cooks meals on a budget, thrifts, shows how to find best cheap stuff, and mend things to last longer.
(on the other hand I would love for him to do like mukbang videos (on leonas credit card ofc) just cause boy deserves to be fed lol)
Jack:
Work out bro. Motivates and teaches how to properly exercise and diet. Does fitness challenges. Also vids of him watering his cactus. Occasional vlogs with friends. Very consistent upload schedule, never missed a day.
Octavinelle
(I’ve done some fanart for Octavinelle you can find [here].)
Azul:
Lots of advice q and a's. Talks about entrepreneurship and finances and business. All his videos are monetized, half are for members only. Does occasional vlogs about his hobbies and collabs.
Jade:
Cooking/foodie/travel channel. Lots of plants and mushrooms. Totally capitalizes on ASMR. Aesthetic. Filled with his hobbies and interests.
Floyd:
Whatever he happens to be interested in. Either 5 mins or 2 hour vids idk. How he got Vil to be in his vid no one knows. Chaotic and lots of pranks. Dunks on people but gives good advice sometimes.
Scarabia
Kalim:
Mostly a vlogger. Vlogs all his parties. Really positive and uplifting videos. Does lots of different challenges (safety checked by Jamil). Looves to collab, almost every vid is a collab with someone new.
Jamil:
Dance cover videos. Does dance challenges and creates new dances. Emphasizes proper stretching and teaches moves. Sometimes vlogs certain outings or basketball club shenanigans.
Ignihyde
Idia:
Gaming channel. Anything from video to board games. Trash talks a lot online. Does tier lists about his fav games, shows, characters. Likes to geek out about his new engineering feats.
Ortho:
Collabs on games with his brother. Shows off his different functions. Maybe a Mythbusters type of content, where he tries out a bunch of experiments (usually ends in explosions even though no explosives are used lol).
Pomefiore
Vil:
Beauty channel. Make ups, product reviews. Get fit videos, advice videos, some vlogs on acting or modeling sets. Generally very polished videos and really good quality advice.
Rook:
Occasional beauty videos. Does reviews on like books, plays, movies he's recently seen/read. Really good insights and dissection of text. Fanboys about Vil a lot. Does journaling videos as well and poetry.
Epel:
Apple carving videos. Does crazy detailed carvings sometimes makes whole displays of them. Vlogs his trips home and shows off his apple orchard and his family.
Diasmonia
Malleus :
Travel/exploration vlogs. Visits different ruins and abandoned places. Teaches people about ruins and gargoyles, videos tend to be hours long. You'll either use it to fall asleep or stay up till 5 am watching.
Lilia:
A kind of everything channel. Mostly vlogs of him trying out different things and messing with people. Definitely does the whole "how do you do fellow kids" attitude for fun. Gives cryptic advice and half the time it's off the wall nonsense, other half actual good advice.
Silver:
Lots of training and exercise videos. Also experiments with making coffee different ways. Sometimes he falls asleep live and it becomes like a fall asleep with me ASMR?
Sebek:
Malleus fanboy channel in all but name. Does self improvement and fitness challenges but they all relate to Malleus in some way. Occasionally does videos following Lilia’s advice and people freak out how he's not dead yet.

Entrepreneurial Options for graduates of Mechanical Engineering
Recently, a shocking number of engineering graduates have opted to pursue the road to entrepreneurship. Rather than laboring as employees in different companies, they are always thinking up fresh concepts for starting and running their own businesses. A survey found that people with engineering backgrounds launch around one-third of all businesses annually. To succeed as an entrepreneur, an engineer must, however, also graduate from the top engineering schools like Maharishi Markandeshwar (Deemed To Be University). So, let us find out the top business prospects for graduates of b.tech mechanical engineering.
Construction Industry
If you are choosing to start your own company, you might seriously think about investing in or establishing your construction company. Given that real estate is currently one of the industries with the fastest rate of growth, the explanation is rather clear. Given the strong need for various types of structures, such as medical facilities, dining establishments, commercial and private buildings, lodging facilities and fast food joints, entertainment hubs, educational institutions, colleges, and recreational areas, there is a wide choice available to you.
Store for Spare Parts
Being a skilled and certified engineer, you should be able to identify the best replacement parts. You might open a spare parts store in your neighborhood to serve those who need to replace broken goods.
E-book writer
Engineers are experts in mechanics, electricity, and infrastructure. They can certainly develop textbooks or e-books in any engineering subject in which they specialize in this way. E-books are currently preferred over traditional textbooks. Since the internet is becoming the primary information source, several web sources can be used to gather ideas and themes for an e-book. If you want your e-book to be widely read, you should first establish a serious online interaction with other people. You should be able to do this using several social media networks.
Independent Engineer and Designer
Being a freelance online engineer designer is another fantastic online business concept for engineers. Benefits from this kind of business include flexible work schedules. These engineers can find employment at discounted prices on several websites, such as Upwork, Freelancer, and others. It primarily entails solving engineering puzzles and producing goods for clients worldwide.
Services for Maintenance and Repair
Both the business and private sectors should engage in this. Engineering expertise entails resolving current problems, suggesting more fixes or replacements, and recommending modifications to current protocols and systems. Maintenance and repair involve not just fixing current problems but also foreseeing potential problems in the future and suggesting ways to avoid them.
Conclusion
These are only a handful of the company concepts that have previously been proposed and are being developed as you read this blog. The discipline of mechanical engineering is vast, and the majority of engineers working in it possess an entrepreneurial mindset. Given their vast potential, individuals can launch their own firm and create jobs for people rather than waiting to be hired by organizations.

Bella Tipping: The youngest girl entrepreneur in Australia
When it comes to business or entrepreneurship, commonly we think of an adult and experienced person. Yes, business needs lots and lots of experience and courage to take it to the next step and achieve success. The major and most important essence of entrepreneurship is confidence and a strong business idea. But the times have changed as new and young entrepreneurs are rising with their new ideas and startups and are successful at a young age. Here in this article, we will discuss a young girl entrepreneur from Australia who started her business at the age of 11 years. She started a travel review business for kids called Kidzcationz.com.

Bella Tipping: Start of Business
Bella Tipping is from Dubbo in Australia has started her business when she had just completed her primary school. The basic reason for that made her start a business was her bad experiences on holiday trips, where she felt the lack of focus on the children’s internet by many hotels. Bella saw her mom giving good reviews on TravelAdvisor about the hotel but Bella did not like it, as it was more comfortable for adults. She felt that beds, food, and other facilities of the hotel ignored kid’s needs and requirements.
Bella after her bad experience, designed and launched her online website or app called Kidzcationz.com. This a travel review or rating app specially designed for kids where the kids can share their experiences about the hotel stay and also can suggest the places they liked and enjoyed. She being a kid thought of helping other kids and making their holiday trip more enjoyable and happier.
Bella expressed in one of the interviews that she as a kid did not have any idea about business or entrepreneurship but her parent supported her to make her idea and wish come true. The most crucial part of raising funds was to convince her parents with the proper business plan which should make them feel as investible. Bernadette and Paul, Bella’s parents after the presentation of the good business plan invested an amount of $80,000 to launch Kidzcationz.
Bella expresses that, the support given by her parents was incredible and boosted her to build a business. From funding her website to providing help with whatever she needed in designing the app. Her parents also used to travel with her for meetings and other business work. Hence supporting her dream and her as the youngest girl entrepreneur in Australia.
Brief on Kidzcationz.com
Bella is concerned about having a good experience on the kids’ holiday trip planned and launched the website to rate and review their trip.  Bella’s Kidzcationz.com mainly focuses on the need for restaurants to make an ambiance that makes children comfortable and enjoyable. Kidzcationz.com as you log in can submit and see the ratings and reviews of particular hotels, restaurants, and, attractions.  One can also search the hotels by the place name and choose the best-rated restaurant for kids.
The major problems or issues that need to be tackled with the website are security and privacy checks. Keeping in mind the child’s safety Kidzcationz.com allows you to provide reviews with avatars instead of using personal information like photos, names, ages, etc. Allowing the use of avatars will also make kids more interested and help in providing an effective way to review.
Recognitions and Awards
Bella Tipping was listed in 18 under 18 of Fortune magazine as a World Young entrepreneur. She grabbed the award of Won Young Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day Awards in 2018. She has also written a book called “Jed Finds his Forever Home” and published it. Bella got the invitation to An evening with President Barack Obama in March 2018 in Sydney.
Bella was a speaker at Diamond Challenge Delaware in 2019. She is one of the fighters and supports people with disability to travel with their chairs in flight. On her website, Kidzcationz.com she launched the function for review on disability. Bella Tipping’s success is been an inspiration to youngsters to achieve their dreams and make their lives glorified with success.
