As a global mode of production based on class domination, capitalism depends on the extraction of surplus value from a subordinated class, the world working class, which is the pool from which profits, interest, rent, dividends, and other forms of this surplus are taken. As one of its most basic features, corporations in different countries mechanize their operations to raise their profit rate by increasing labor productivity. As these techniques become generalized, the relative advantage for their early adopters dries up, and a new productivity norm becomes the rate at which businesses must produce to remain competitive. The drive for a new breakthrough in productivity begins. Enormous amounts of profit are produced and realized during this process while deleting workers from it—that is, by getting rid of the real source of profit, labor power. As a result, even as individual corporations rake in more money through investing in machinery, the average rate of profit for all producers declines. Tumblr, Just Talk To Them! Long Post
My idea for helping Tumblr would be to focus on the things Gen Z wants, this is easier said than done for a wide range of reasons. An issue that social media platforms are facing is a decrease in user activity, this is primarily due to an increasing portion of Gen Z users logging off their accounts, or uninstalling them all together. Many of these users have cited a lack of representation, diversity, inclusivity, or effects to their mental health as reasons for leaving social media and online spaces. For many millennials and older folks like myself the idea of “just don’t use it then,” seems like a pretty straight forward idea and simple solution. However, I would argue taking this point of view on being online and interacting online is just as bad as what the older generation told millennials about our mental health.
You know the whole, “just get up and do it,” we know this misses the point for a generation that grew up learning more and more about mental health and personal wellbeing. So I think we should really consider the fact that Gen Z might not remember a time where they didn’t have the entirety of human knowledge at their fingertips. As well as the effects that being connected like this from a very young age has on people.
I believe as millennials we have become jaded to the world and what we can do to enact change, however I would argue that as we get older we should work towards giving Gen Z the power to enact the changes we were not always able to. We should also work together to give the younger generation the tools they need to create the change they want to create, and help them develop the online spaces that are healthier and more inclusive than they have been for millennials.
            What can Tumblr do to give Gen Z the tools and space they need? Tumblr must open up a dialog with Gen Z to discuss the issues and topics that are important to them. Of course not everyone wants to enact radical social change, that is not what I am suggesting Tumblr do by having this conversation. What I am suggesting is Tumblr take the lead in an industry that is still operating on outdated methods for engaging users. As news reports, and first person accounts discuss how these companies fail to realize the true source of what people are looking for I think it is time for a change that can and should take place. Tumblr is the ideal proving ground for this type of change to take place too. Doing what is popular and works for the vast majority is not the issue and that is not what I am saying.
Tumblr is working towards being a relevant platform with respect to mainstream online platforms it must be willing to put its ear to the ground and truly listen to what is going on. Especially where Gen Z is concerned, as they continue to make up a larger and larger portion of the online populations.
            I would suggest that Automattic, Tumblr, WordPress, @staff, @photomatt work with the very talented team from the Log off Movement. The Log off movement is a teen-led, worldwide organization, with the goal of helping teens and adults understand the impacts social media and the internet have on mental health.
            Also with June coming up soon, it would be a wonderful time for them to highlight LGBTQI+, POC, and other marginalized groups across the US and the world where Tumblr has users too.
