SO! Your first must-read is Like Water by Rebecca Podos, which has bisexual representation and a love interest coming to terms with their gender identity. (You’ll find the same in Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake, which I also highly recommend, but it’s not out until May.) Your second must-read is When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore, which alternates between a queer female MC and trans boy POV and is one of the most beautiful YA books ever written. (Less focus on bisexuality there, which is the only reason I put it second, but definitely read both.)

For more great and varied bisexual rep, check out Far From You by Tess Sharpe, How to Make a Wish by Ashley Herring Blake, They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera, Autoboyography by Christina Lauren, Our Own Private Universe by Robin Talley, Not Otherwise Specified by Hannah Moskowitz, A&B by JC Lillis, Not Your Sidekick by CB Lee (the only non-contemp on this list, because I’m only including books that use the word bisexual and that’s really rare outside contemp), Little & Lion by Brandy Colbert, and, it’s the love interest rather than the main character, but I’m gonna rec my own Under the Lights anyway, because I happen to think it’s good for this, and that gets confirmed for me decently often!

If you’re more of an SFF person, there’s great bi rep there too - The Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine, Otherbound by Corinne Duyvis, Adaptation by Malinda Lo (which, actually, also has the word bisexual IIRC), Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova, The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey - you just won’t generally see the word, so I prefer to rec contemp for this since I think that’s particularly affirming in the beginning.

For books with main characters grappling with gender identity, I highly recommend If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo - though she’s firmly transitioned to girl for the current timeline of the book, the flashbacks go through the process in a really well-crafted way - Brooklyn, Burning by Steve Brezenoff, Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin, and Girl Mans Up by M-E Girard, and for non-contemp, for sure try Lizard Radio by Pat Schmatz, Dreadnought by April Daniels, and The Unintentional Time Traveler by Everett Maroon.

the malinda lineage; character spotlight

ethel malinda was born in 1896 as the oldest child of agnes and jacob malinda. she was later joined by a younger brother, everett and a sister, eloise. as a child, ethel’s life was relatively peaceful, although her mother struggled to fend off greedy relatives who still doubted her claim to the malinda fortune.

early on, ethel wasn’t interested in becoming the next malinda matriarch. she was free-spirited and longed to travel instead of being tied down to the manor. when she turned seventeen, she gave up her claim to the manor and gave it instead to everett. at this point, the siblings weren’t close anymore, so everyone was surprised by her decision.

everett and eloise wanted to impress the wizarding elite of britain and looked to make prestigious marriages to raise the malindas back into the good graces of the sacred twenty-eight. ethel wasn’t interested in posturing and hated the stuck-up attitudes of the pureblood circles, so instead she decided to strike out on her own, becoming a journalist for the daily prophet.

eventually ethel grew dissatisfied by the way the daily prophet was run and resigned, becoming an independent investigative journalist. she moved to new york, after having already worked there for some time with the prophet. she reconnected with irene quinn, her brilliant but eccentric former class mate, and the two begun solving crimes together, working as partners for several years. through this work, she was able to realize her dream of travelling and seeing many different places.

it was also in the states where ethel met her future husband rory o’neill. during her hogwarts years, she had harboured a crush on the older gryffindor and as fate would have it, she had a second chance when rory arrived in new york in search of his sister. eventually the two fell in love and got married. ethel had three children, a step-son miles, and twin daughters jane and kate.

she always remained close with her parents and even made up with her siblings and though they never became the best of friends, she was a part of the lives of her nephews and nieces. irene remained her best friend through her entire life.

picture 01: my malinda lore only goes back a couple of generations. it’s all pretty straightforward. the marriages to the nott and greengrass families were made in an effort to get back into the good graces of the sacred twenty-eight. i haven’t really expanded on that side of the family very much (yet.)

a few words should be said about mervyn malinda, verna’s father. he is listed as the legitimate son of everett and antonia, but in truth he is an illegitimate child of everett and a muggle woman. the circumstances of his birth were well hidden in order to spare the family even more embarrassment. (so you didn’t hear this from me!)

the o’neill side of the family comes from @unfortunate-arrow

The Malinda lineage; Ask game

Thank you so much @kathrynalicemc for hosting this challenge! I had a lot of fun delving deeper into the Malinda family lore, as well as reading about all of your families!

Canon or Fiction? Definitely original! I started playing HPHM pretty much right after it came out and @potionboy3 helped me pick out a good “wizard-sounding” name for Verna. I can’t remember where the first name came from, but I’m sure Annie got the last name from MALINDA the youtuber. I took it and ran with it. ~

Family Ties: All the pure blood families are probably related to each other one way or another, to be honest. The Malindas share close ties to the Greengrasses and the Notts. By marriage, they’re also related to my other original family, the Quinns. Verna’s grandmother is a Selwyn by birth. Verna marries Merula Snyde, and thus is related to the Snydes by marriage. Verna’s mother comes from the Raeburn family, belonging to @potionboy3 Verna’s great aunt Ethel married into the O’Neill family by @unfortunate-arrow Verna and Merula’s child Roe ends up with Declan Rovere, also by @potionboy3 ~

Foundations: Agnes Malinda is the oldest character on the timeline that I’ve actually developed. Her parents, Robert and Eleanor, are named, but I have no current plans of elaborating on their backstory. Until Agnes, the Malindas were an upstanding pure-blood family, probably included in the Sacred Twenty-Eight (maybe called something like, The Sacred Thirty-Five at the time...), but Agnes, unfortunately, was a girl. A girl who married a half-blood called Jacob Macmillan. It is said, that the Malindas are descendants from a cadet branch of Godric Gryffindor himself. This claim has been disputed by those who wish to see them fail, but the Malindas certainly feed the rumour any chance they get. It helps that most of the family is sorted into Gryffindor. When it’s finally time for Roe Malinda to attend Hogwarts, this sort of Gryffindor-elitism is pretty much a thing of the past. ~

Fun Facts: The Malinda’s are famed for the apple orchard located at the Malinda manor. Every year, Verna’s father used to enchant one of the apples to appear golden and arrange a little friendly competition between his children to find the ‘treasure’. Jacob usually let Verna win. Mervyn Malinda is actually an illegitimate child. His father Everett had an affair with a muggle woman. This is going to prove to be a problem during the 2nd Wizarding War. (This is not a fun fact??? This is a depressing fact.) They’re actually (very distantly) related to Godric Gryffindor, so the rumour is true. ~

A pureblood witch with great expectations for her daughter. She passed away when Agnes was only 11, leaving her husband heartbroken. Agnes was not close to her mother, since Eleanor found her to be too wild. She always tried to instruct her to be a proper lady, which Agnes despised as a child.

Husband: Jacob Owen Malinda, né Macmillan

Agnes and Jacob met at Hogwarts. Jacob was two years ahead of her so the two weren’t close. They knew of each other but barely spoke. After Agnes graduated, she met Jacob again through his work as a ministry official. He assisted her in the legal issues of her inheritance and the two grew to be friendly.

Agnes finds out during their courtship that Jacob is half-blood, his mother being a muggle. It was hidden from the public to save face, as the Macmillans are a respectable pure-blood family. This doesn’t deter her though, and she marries him anyway.

She wants to keep her inheritance and her father’s legacy and will fight tooth and nail for what she believes in. She’s academically talented and wants to do well in school, and she’s a terrible loser, preferring to win everything from games to arguments.

Ethel Malinda:

She is the eldest of three siblings and the only one who left Europe for a different kind of life. Her younger siblings, Everett and Eloise, grew up to be sort of... stuck up and old-fashioned due to influence from their other relatives (Agnes' aunts and uncles and their sons who suck!! and wanted to inherit the manor and all the money instead of Agnes). Ethel didn't want anything to do with all the drama involved with her family so she made sure to study hard and have the ability to carve out a life of her own. She loves her mother and father a lot and misses them but she's glad to be away from England. Ethel doesn't get along with her siblings very well as they are so different but she does love them too, and tries to be a balancing influence on them and especially their children whenever she can.

Nova Hartley:

Nova is scared of the sea, has been ever since her mother drowned. She used to love going to the beach but it takes her years to overcome her fear even a little. If HPMA had a beach episode, she'd be grumpily sitting somewhere while everyone else had fun in the water. She only starts to love water again after she notices her own children's excitement and love for swimming and playing at the beach! I imagine her holding toddler Wyatt's hands as he splashes around in the shallow water and she starts to think that maybe she can get over her fear someday!
