A Versace Luncheon♕
Dreaming of what it must look like... what patterns the tile makes... how ornate the sculptures are, where the staircases lead. All of this I wondered as we walked by the old Versace mansion that is one part restaurant and one part VERY exclusive boutique hotel.
We were at the beach after a day out around Lincoln, shopping and finding fruity piña colodas to send off our friend from class who is the first to fly out to his base. Tiffani and I had one more day in Miami and I was curious if I could get a lunch reservation at the renown establishment.
Tumblr media
WELL, much to my surprise, we did. I was shocked, since even places in Austin book out month's in advance. I thought surely there's no way a world-famous destination like Miami and it being Gianni Versace's last residence, it must have years of reservations. NOPE! The property managers or hospitality directors made it inclusive to dine at Gianni's by offering a 3-course lunch special (dining is a different scene entirely) that's set at around $35 + tax. Whatever else you want: champagne, espresso, etc is extra. Sick. A lavish lunch for the peasants. Booked it!
The cuisine is exquisite with Italian and Mediterranean notes. You're in an elegant atmosphere, surrounded by ornate decor, frescoed walls, and lush gardens. Gianni's combines fine dining with a touch of celebrity glamour, making it a unique and memorable destination for those seeking a taste of both high fashion and culinary excellence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feeling luxuriously satiated... this was a lunch date for the diaries. The meal, the ambiance, everything about this place was gorgeous and historical. And a reward for our prior weeks grueling over coursework for our new venture as charter flight attendants. The Mayor of South Beach, Gianni Versace lived and breathed within these walls. And yes, now it is a place for tourists to go... but even so, we did Miami the local way and now we've had the pièce de résistance.

Say You Won’t Let Go
a Sidney Crosby wedding series
Part Two
a/n: here’s part deux! read part one here. this will have at least one more part, probably 2! worth noting that I know next to no French and am relying heavilyyyy on our pal Google Translate in this story.
summary: a little more background throughout, as Juliette and Sidney meet up with their families and hockey star-studded bridal party for a rehearsal at their iconic wedding venue. if you’re not familiar with the location (it’s honestly incredible), click here for a look!
warnings: mention of deceased father. otherwise, so damn fluffy it’s practically cotton candy.
_____
Sidney and I arrived at the church exactly on time, much to Lauren’s satisfaction, with two cars carrying Mario’s crew pulling in at the next moment. I closed the passenger door of Sidney’s steel grey Range Rover and turned to take in the sight of our wedding venue, Heinz Chapel on Pitt’s campus, reaching a hand up to shield my face from the early evening sun as I gazed. Sidney did the same, coming to stand next to me and snaking an arm around my torso.
“Not a bad place to get married, eh?” he teased, kissing the crown of my head. I smiled and shook my head. “I’ve dreamed of this since the moment I first saw this place,” I told him. “It’s perfect.”
He took a step forward, offered his hand to me and grinned, quite pleased that we had been able to reserve the coveted location last summer despite it typically being booked three or more years in advance. I didn’t often request many special favors in the name of my uncle or fiancé, but this was one that seemed a necessity. Taking Sidney’s hand and walking toward the cathedral-style landmark, I said a silent prayer of thanks that I’d gotten even more than what I always dreamed of, in so many ways.
My family and Sidney walked into the chapel to find his parents and our bridal party already mingling near the pews, excitement palpably buzzing beneath the magnificent arches and towering stained-glass windows that decorated the exquisite interior. As we stepped through the doors, they turned our way, and I let out an echoing, very French-Canadian-sounding, “Allooo!” making them all laugh.
I first greeted Troy, Trina, and Taylor with hugs and warm hellos. Sidney’s parents were staying at his former townhome on Mt. Washington, which previously served as his bachelor pad and now housed Taylor in light of her recent move to Pittsburgh. We had spent much quality time with the elder Crosbys since their arrival from Nova Scotia a few days ago, helping us with final preparations and enjoying each other’s company ahead of my official entrance into their family.
Both Trina and Nathalie had accompanied me earlier in the week to my final dress fitting and pickup appointment at the bridal boutique where I had selected my gown. Though my mother did plan to attend the wedding ceremony as a guest, she was uninterested in playing the traditional mother of the bride role and joining me for such commitments, which hadn’t surprised me but still stung sharply, especially when I was fastened into the gown and presented by the salon attendant to a waiting Trina and Nathalie.
Bitter tears pricked my eyes as I allowed myself to feel robbed of sharing that moment with my own mom. My sadness was quickly overcome, however, when the women, sensing my sadness, warmly embraced me and fawned over me, admiring the perfect fit of the gown, both becoming emotional when Nathalie tucked my headpiece and veil tenderly into my hair.
The three of us stared at my reflection in the mirror for a few moments as we let tears of many complicated emotions fall, with joy prevailing above them all. I couldn’t keep the enormous smile from my cheeks when Trina squeezed my shoulder and whispered, “Oh, sweetheart, just wait until Sidney sees you.”
Now, we were less than 24 hours away from that moment, with our bridal party and family bustling around us in the chapel.
As our officiant, Father Antonio, announced that we would be lining up for the rehearsal momentarily, Lauren approached me with a grin, extending a bouquet she had made of the countless ribbons and bows from my bridal shower gifts acquired a couple of months ago. I giggled at how cheesy yet adorable the arrangement looked, thanking her as we huddled at the back of the aisle with my bridesmaids and Sidney’s groomsmen.
“This place is a little beat up,” Nate MacKinnon, our best man, ribbed Sidney from between the two of us. “I don’t know why you guys picked this dump,” he added, pulling me to his side. Sidney shoved lightly at his chest before the two of them laughed and embraced.
“Yeah, the old barn in Cole Harbour was booked this weekend, so we kinda had to settle for the next best thing,” Sidney played into Nate’s teasing, as his longtime best friend Mike, also a Cole Harbour native, approached us.
“Kind of a shithole,” Nate whispered, earning a warning glance from me as Austin tried to hold in hysterical laughter. “You can’t say shit in church!” Austin forced out from under his breath. “Oh, we’re going straight to hell,” Mike commented softly. Sidney gave me an apologetic look and I smiled up at him.
“It’s fine. These are our people!” I said to him, flicking Nate’s elbow as I passed him. “Besides, we’ve already been living in sin,” I added, winking at Sidney. He gave me a look of mock disbelief and insisted, “No. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m a nice Catholic boy.” I giggled and pushed onto my tiptoes to kiss his cheek, which smelled of his fresh aftershave.
In addition to Nate, Mike, and Austin, we greeted Sidney’s other groomsmen as we prepared for the rehearsal — his current teammates Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin and former Penguin Marc-Andre Fleury. They had all graciously accepted the invitation by Sidney to play this special role in our day, with Geno flying in from Russia and Kris and Marc-Andre from Quebec.
Marc-Andre had brought a few other important components to our day along with him — not the least of which was his wife and my best friend, Veronique. She and I had first met when Sidney and I were only casually seeing each other, and she had predicted this wedding long, long ago. She had been one of our biggest cheerleaders since the day we met, and despite her and Marc’s eventual move to Las Vegas, the four of us remained the closest of friends, visiting each other when the men’s respective teams played and whenever else possible.
With Lauren as my maid of honor and Stephanie, Alexa, and Taylor as three of my other bridesmaids, my friend Jacqueline, a Pittsburgh transplant with Canadian roots whom I met while studying at Duquesne, rounded out my crew of six ladies who would stand by my side on this long-awaited day.
To up the cuteness factor, Sidney and I had selected Marc-Andre and Veronique’s daughters, Estelle and Scarlet, as our flower girls, with Geno’s son Nikita and Kris’s son Alex as our ringbearers. Nikita was still a bit young to understand his role, but grinned broadly when Sidney told him when they arrived just how important he was to our day. On the other hand, Kris told us that Alex had cried after his parents had asked him to be in our wedding, because, as much as he adored and was attached to Sid, Alex had been under the impression that I was his girlfriend, not Uncle Sidney’s.
Eventually, after Sidney and I made the rounds to greet them all, the entire bridal party was grouped together to begin the walk-through. The venue’s wedding planner wrangled the children as the priest noted that Sidney needed to leave my side to approach the front of the church alone, in preparation for his emergence from one of the side doors at the front of the sanctuary tomorrow.
Playful “oooh”’s erupted from our groomsmen, who teased Sid about having to pry himself away from my hip. Sidney rolled his eyes, nodding and smirking, before turning his full attention to me. He tucked some hair behind both of my ears before caressing my cheeks with his thumbs.
“You gonna be okay, Jules?” Sidney asked, eyes wider than normal as he searched mine carefully.
I knew he wasn’t asking if I would be alright once he left my side to stand twenty yards away for the next five minutes, but rather if I would be able to contain my emotions as Mario walked me down the aisle, even during a practice run, in place of my father.
We had talked about this specific part of our day a number of times, with Sidney even pondering aloud whether he should walk me down the aisle himself because walking with anyone except my dad felt impossible to me. His sweet dad had even offered to do so, should I desire. After each conversation, Sidney and I both kept arriving at the same conclusion — that the best and most appropriate plan of action was for Mario to give me away and also to join me for the traditional father-daughter dance at the reception.
I nodded, holding onto Sidney’s wrists. “Yeah,” I whispered. “I’ll be okay,” I promised. He nodded solemnly in return and kissed my forehead before pulling back with a wink.
“You can do this,” he encouraged. “I’ll see you up there.” I gave him my best smile as he turned and walked to the front of the chapel.
As our wedding party lined up in front of me to take their positions, Nate stopped me for one of his signature bear hugs, resting his chin on top of my head just for a moment before releasing me. The rest of our group squeezed my hands and rubbed my arms lovingly as I walked to the back door of the sanctuary where Mario waited, hands folded in front of his hips and a tentative smile on his features. He, too, gave me a sweet kiss on the forehead before holding my shoulders at arm’s length.
“Listen, princesse, it was one of the greatest honors of my life when you asked me to walk you down the aisle,” Mario said, soft enough that only I could hear. “But if you’ve changed your mind and would rather do this some other way, please, just say the word.” I shook my head and wrapped my arms around his waist just as the piano music began.
“No, you are exactly the person my dad would want doing this if he couldn’t,” I told him confidently. Mario let out a small exhale, and I could tell he was trying to remain composed. As we parted, he said, “Then let’s go make him proud.” He offered his arm to me and I wrapped my hands around it firmly, leaning my head into his shoulder briefly.
We watched pairs of our party head down the aisle toward Sidney and the priest at a relaxed pace: Jacqueline and Geno led off, followed by Veronique and Marc-Andre, Taylor and Kris, Alexa and Austin, Stephanie and Mike, and finally, Lauren and Nate. Alex walked down the aisle in a near-skip, holding a fake pillow very carefully just as his mother, our beautiful friend Catherine, had instructed him, with Nikita by his side mimicking his every move. Their fathers gave them thumbs up and everyone clapped lightly when they reached the end of the aisle.
Next, after a bit of prompting from both their parents at the front, Estelle and Scarlett followed the boys’ path, scattering fake rose petals in place of the real ones they would have tomorrow, earning their own quiet round of applause. As the children were seated at the ends of the front pews on either side, the music shifted, and our wedding planner turned and gave Mario and me the nod.
“Ready, Juliette?” he asked softly. My eyes traveled down the long red carpet in front of us to the steps where the love of my life stood centered in between our closest friends and family, waiting for me. He gave me a warm, adoring smile and at that moment, I felt my unease melt away, just as it always did when Sidney was near.
“I’m so ready,” I whispered.

Bringing together the finest creative talents in architecture, design, art curation, food, beverage, and hospitality, each NoMad explores the artistic, cultural and historic interplay between its home city of New York and European culture. In London, NoMad lends its residential warmth and casual elegance to the storied building, layering it with rich interiors and a playful spirit that is decidedly NoMad.
In collaboration with New York-based interior design studio, Roman and Williams, the transformation of the historic 19th century building draws inspiration from the building’s history and its location in Covent Garden, as well as exploring the artistic and cultural connection between London and New York. Grounded in this narrative, and an ethos rooted in creating voltage by uniting complementary forces, the masculine character of the historic architecture is animated with interjections of femininity, glamour, and a cosmopolitan spirit. This is expressed through richly textured fabrics, aesthetic woodwork and ethereal murals.
The opening of the hotel comes on the heels of Roman and Williams’ most recent opening of the British Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Robin Standefer, co-founder of Roman and Williams, says: “The spirit of the London NoMad is collected and fundamentally residential. It embraces a New Romanticism that has a powerful contrast with the grit and strength of the courthouse. From rich textured textiles to aesthetic inspired woodwork to ethereal murals, the space evokes a grand residence but always tempered with a bohemian spirit that Stephen and I infuse into every Roman and Williams project.”
Stephen Alesch, co-founder of Roman and Williams, says: “With all our projects we want people to feel comfortable and curious. On a journey of discovery that is familiar even if it’s from a dream they may have had. The Nomad is meant to be beautiful, bohemian and evocative all at once. The building is so powerful and remarkable that you are embraced by its strength, while the rich and textured interiors balance the bones. There is a tension between this muscularity and softness that creates a powerful narrative for the guest. There are many stories to discover and hopefully to create.”
NoMad London is also home to a world-class art programme that celebrates the influence of post-war American art and the European avant-garde. A collaboration with long-time Sydell creative partners, be-poles, the hotel accommodates a curation of over 1,600 collected and commissioned works by a variety of British and international artists that lends a deeply layered narrative to the hotel experience.
For the first time in a NoMad hotel, abstract art is featured in reference to the Abstract Expressionist movement, which represents a significant moment in New York’s influence on modern art.
Antoine Ricardou, founder of studio be-poles, says: “The art for NoMad London was carefully curated to explore the exchange of creative ideas between New York and London. The full collection is not only a unique ode to the neighborhood of Covent Garden and the Royal Opera House across the street, but to the NoMad’s American roots, creating a rich narrative that blends photographs, sculptures, ceramics, paintings, drawings and more.”
As in all NoMad properties, food and beverage plays an integral role in the experience with a host of dining and drinking experiences throughout and is overseen by Executive Chef Ashley Abodeely. The hospitality and dining room teams will be overseen by Food & Beverage Director and NoMad NYC opening alum, Chris Perone.
At the heart of the hotel, The NoMad Restaurant is housed in a lush, light-filled atrium evocative of an Edwardian greenhouse and is open five days a week (Tuesday to Saturday). Side Hustle is NoMad’s version of a British pub with a decidedly New York sensibility and a playful spirit, serving a menu of sharing plates paired with an agave-based list of spirits created by legendary mixologist Leo Robitschek and the award-winning NoMad Bar team.
The Library is the living room of the hotel where guests can enjoy light fare, coffee and tea, and cocktails amidst a thoughtful collection of books. Coming further down the line, Common Decency, is the first-ever NoMad lounge, and is nestled in a subterranean playground, offering a lively East London style craft cocktail bar complemented by elements of West End establishments.
NoMad London also offers over 9,000 square feet of elegant and adaptable space for weddings, events, meetings and private dining. The building’s original Magistrates’ Courtroom, now the Magistrates’ Ballroom, has been re-imagined as a formal space with two adjacent private dining rooms, a separate bar, and a dedicated entrance from the street using the original courtroom’s entrance.
A unique part of the hotel will also be the Bow Street Police Museum which pays homage to the building’s colourful past both as a police station for over 100 years and as a Magistrates’ Court.
Following government guidelines in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, NoMad London will adhere to regulations, including the appropriate PPE for restaurant and hotel personnel.

Chicago, that toddlin' town
I guess very deep inside I love it: I always end up visiting freezing places in December for a quick holiday before the actual big holidays. First it was Russia, then Finland, London and now Chicago. I must definitely have a fetich with the cold, because it’s really unbearable with -18C, and yet, here I am.
Tumblr media
Chicago is cold, yes. But it’s wonderful as well. I can’t wait to come back during summer time. If I find it gorgeous already, I can’t imagine then. Winter isn’t that bad either: all the beautiful places you want to go, see and know are actually empty, picture-perfect awaiting for you and your enjoyment. Some rooftops get cold very easily but, there are other closed ones, surrounded by glass, already ready to fight the winter back, gifting you a beautiful sight of Chicago lights within the comfort of AC.
Tumblr media
You breath and eat its culture. People are polite. The American flavor is present in every corner. It’s hard to describe a particular neighborhood or place; instead, you just have to wing it to discover it. If, as per my point of view, New York City is the heart of the US (at least on the East Coast), where the culture beat and rhythm is determined, Chicago must definitely be its lungs: the air is fresher, the city is cleaner, more tidy yet exciting, smaller but rich, more elegant and better taken care of, making sure the blood stream fluids hassle-free in this living being that is America. I mean, it’s called the Windy City for a reason!
A mix of Sydney, San Francisco, Singapore and Sweden (all of them with S - such a weird coincidence) with a dash of Toronto and Austin, this is a perfect merge of everything. What Yangon is to SEA, I believe Chicago is to North America’s East Coast.
Downtown Chicago, The Loop & River North, the main stuff.
Michigan St. is one of the city’s main arteries, it’s fully decorated, with its fancy boutiques, stores and hotels, charming the riverwalk and its surroundings. The sharp cold, the one that makes you feel like you are about to lose your fingers in any sudden bump or gentle touch, paints the city with a crisp white - still figuring out whether it actually came from my frozen watery eyes or the snow itself. Regardless, it’s indeed a charming Winter Wonderland.
Tumblr media
Arriving from O’hare to any part of town is quite easy thanks to the CTA. I went off on Washington stop and walked a few blocks reaching my friend Gabe’s house by New East Park. A compulsory stop at Millennium Park, with a visit to the wrongly named “bean” (it’s actually named Cloud), the Art Institute of Chicago - awarded the best Museum in the World by Trip Advisor until 2018 for four years in a row - is a must. But what is even more important is to try Chicago’s pizza emblem: the stuffed pizza pie at Giordano’s. It has multiple locations, -the original one being at River North- and its menu is full of the good stuff. We went to the one by the Bean instead, and be prepared: it’s a lot of food and it will take at least 45 mins to reach your table. So don’t get fooled, try to hold on and avoid ordering appetizers, don’t be like us, if not you’ll get super full before the main food star. It’s rich and full-filling, the doe is fantastic, it honors the actual “pie” name it stands for, the sauce is delicious and the stuffing reminded me of the pizza rellena my Nona used to make, although with a complete different taste (ours was way better, coz it had bacon, anchovies and eggs).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After an evident food comma, be prepared to check out a wonderful sunset at London House, a hotel & rooftop bar strategically located on the intersection of Michigan St. and the Riverwalk, where you can be mesmerized by Chicago’s skyline. If you are visiting in winter, remember to drop by early (sunset in December happens approximately around 4:30pm), and if you are checking it out during summer nights, be ready for some music and fun until late.
A great winter alternative is The Signature Room & Lounge - a closed yet wonderful restaurant, located on the 95th and 96th floor of one of Chicago’s tallest building. A reminiscence of  the Hyatt Hotel in Tokyo and a flashback to Charlotte’s wondering sights at the massive windows in Lost in Translation happens when you first face those monumental glasses, while being charmed by Chicago’s lights and movement. From 5 to 7 there’s a very convenient happy hour, so be mindful to check it out: Prosecco for me, Old Fashion for Gabe. Another incredible talk for our memories.
Right next to it, you can find The Drake Hotel, now owned by Hilton, also known as the place where Al Capone lived here in Chicago.
Tumblr media
When it comes to dinner, man, you’re in a pickle! Chicago is known for its food scene and for a reason. It’s foodie’s heaven. Thankfully, talking with locals, residents and cross-checking with blogs and seasonal magazines, I can undoubtedly say that The Purple Pig is the place to go. Mediterranean cuisine with a twist, with a wonderful collection of wines and charcuterie. We shared three delicious dishes: whipped feta with honey and sweet heirloom tomatoes, butternut squash with peanut butter and adobo, to finally wrap it up with an exquisite Spanish grilled octopus with potatoes and pesto greens, which made us end up with no extra room for dessert - my friend Belu would be so disappointed on me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right across the street, you can take some pictures at the Intercontinental Hotel, which hosts Michael Jordan Steakhouse (not a biggie, but it’s kind of funny that this legend, Mike 23, has a restaurant on his own). Wrap up your night with some blues. Walk down the area to find your favorite bar, hopefully one with no or little cover fee. We went to Blue Chicago ($10 bucks), grab a IPA Goose Island beer (the local brew) and enjoy some tunes. It was really amazing - I could listen to this music all day long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up North: Old Town, Wicker Park & Longan Park, the cool stuff.
Head up to Old Town, near Lincoln Park. Take the brown line (if you manage to activate your CTA card, it’s not an easy task if you don’t have a US phone number) and travel 4 long stops. This neighborhood holds St Michael’s Church, one of only seven buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Start your tour over there, and check out the beautiful architecture that surrounds it. It’s an extremely weird merge of modern and old buildings and styles, with some very well preserved gems. Same happens downtown. I guess that after the fire, the city really focused on keeping its charm as untouched as possible. And damn they are doing a great of a job at it!
Tumblr media
Up there, one of the main roads - which is also a National highway - is North Wells Street (IL-64 Route, oh well hello New York’s BQE deja vu!) and check out Second City, an iconic Comedy Club and Theater in the US - thanks Juan for the tip!-. It started as a small cabaret theater nearly 60 years ago and has since become the world’s premier name in improv-based sketch comedy and education. Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Bill Murray and Mike Myers are just some of the name-dropping figures that appear as their alumni.
Tumblr media
Right in front of it, there’s Foxtrot Cafe, a wonderful and warm place where to have breakfast. It’s iconic spicy chicken biscuit is a must, and you can pair it with the coffee of your choice. Almond cap for me. After some needed calories to fight the -8C temperature, I headed east to Wicker Park.
What a wonderful place. It’s dodgy, ruined down and hipster-looking. It is truly fantastic. The best of British’s Shoreditch with the untapped, gritted vibe of Brooklyn’s Bushwick or Flatbush, with the crazy look of Seattle’s Pike/Pine-Capitol’s Hill. This is where High Fidelity (2000s, John Cusack in a record store movie) was shot. Gentrification is the hype word you’ll hear, but still, Wicker Park remains a vibrant hub of culture and commerce in Chicago, riddled with boutiques, restaurants, cocktail bars, concerts venues and condos. It’s main area is located around the six corners of Milwaukee, North and Damen Avenues.
Starting from Milwaukee Ave. South, make a compulsory stop by Myopic Books, a nerdy paradise for all second-hand book fans. Continue your literally hunt down by Milwaukee Av and rejoice at Volume’s Book, get the warm hot cocoa you were craving for while writing your travel blog post about Chicago or read a new book instead. For a more funky venue, walk down a few more steps to find The Wormhole, Chicago’s most visited coffee shop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Wormhole is a place very hard to define, so I will just say that is an '80s-themed rustic coffee shop, complete with a DeLorean, pouring locally roasted coffee. It’s a fun place with great music and even better wifi. It’s easily and strategically located before arriving to some of greatest stores by Milwaukee Ave. Make some time to check out all the fantastic the second hand, vintage and thrift shops like Kokoroko, Free People, & or if you prefer, stop by Reckless Records for some great music discounts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Make yourself some time to check it by night as well, you can have fun at Emporium, the great arcade place or even have a drink or two at Davenport’s, the great piano bar and cabaret.
Tumblr media
The best place - and most iconic one - to have a cozy, all-time-classic lunch is Dove’s Lunchonette, inspired in old ‘60s and ‘70s Chicago’s soul and blues. It’s really fantastic. Becky (almost certain that was her name) is the great waitress that will recommend you all the goodness available in the menu and refill your coffee or tea, always with her laugh and great vibe. Make sure to appreciate the tunes and the environment, it’s a great memory from this city. A delicious poblano pepper filled with chicken and cheese, deep fried in delicious crumbles, topping a side of mexican rice with house, home-made spicy sauce. Yummy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continue your exploration heading towards Logan Place, where more cool stores like tattoo parlors and skate stores are located. Don’t miss out on the street art scene and the 606, the Chicago’s Highline. Make a stop at the “Greetings from Chicago” mural and don’t hesitate to refuel at Colectivo Coffee, a great place where co-working and coffee brewery merges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going West: Fulton Market, Greek Town and West Loop
This is THE place to eat. All of Chicago’s top restaurants are here, even the ones that have their venues by the riverwalk, they know they need to be here as well. We tried out luck at Au Cheval, named the best burger in America for a while, but it comes with a cost: an hour and a half waiting queue. Instead of getting our burger treat, with it’s typical knife on top, resembling some kind of conquest your stomach is about to achieve and colonize, we decided to give Green Street Smoked Meats a chance. This is one of Gabe’s favorite spots in Fulton Market, and it’s a nice and fancier Texas Smokehouse. Communal, big tables, great music and vibe, where to find delicious BBQ, even better brisket which we tried to tuned down with healthier sides such as yummy broccoli salad as well as the traditional pickle cabbage one, are there to ignite your night.
The Green Door Tavern is an awesome tip my parents gave me. Apparently, it was vox populi back in the ‘20s that the establishments that had a green door, hosted a speakeasy inside and did not respect the prohibition rules of no-alcohol. So, let’s party like it’s 1921 and enjoy a drink or two in here! Once you enter, it just look like a regular, sports and antique bar, where memorabilia and Irish Pub look-and-feel rules the place. Yet, do not despair: head to the back, go down the stairs and before reaching the bathroom, try to listen to the music. A wall, a tricky one, hidden behind a books and ornaments shelf, you shall find Heaven’s door. A funky, old school, hour-o-clock-show bar, where to enjoy strong cocktails, and around the clock shows. Music, magic or, it’s signature event: burlesque. After choosing your drink from a very unique tarot-card-like menu, indulge yourself in the ‘20s era with the surprise show and the old-school videos played on the stage curtains. It’s a fantastic experience!
Tumblr media
Visit the Hoxton hotel (always beautiful, never disappointing according to my experiences in Brooklyn, Paris and now Chicago) and head up to it’s rooftop restaurant Cabra - a Peruvian fusion delight. Great for brunch or lunch, we indulged on it’s sample menu and enjoyed some fresh guac and chips, a pulled pork belly sandwich, a tuna tiradito, goat empanadas and some delicious mango and chocolate dessert. It was a perfect Thursday food-comma.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before leaving Fulton Market, walk around and visit the brand new Time’s Out Market. Contrary to the Hoxton experience, Time’s Out is a great content platform with great venues around the world. Although, no market is as nice and as delicious as the Lisbon one. It was the first Time’s Out market they launched, and although I’ve visited some others like New York’s or Chicago’s, they do not manage to create the same vibe and atmosphere you can find in Lisbon. Chicago’s one is nice and you can find top names such as The Purple Pig and so on, but maybe you wanna give some of the surrounding restaurants a try before choosing Time’s Out Market.
Wrap it up by Navy Pier & a bis on the Riverwalk
While my stayed in the Windy City was coming to an end, I went to the Navy Pier for sunset to be wonder by the Michigan Lake and its view. We also walked down again the main road and visited The Protein Bar, a healthy venue were wraps and juices are top notch and you with your purchase you contribute to a local start-up. You can also check out a top view of the Bean and the Millennial park at Cindy’s, the rooftop of Chicago’s Athletic Association. Visit the Public Library and imagine yourself studying at the same booths or with the same texts Obama once did. Have a coffee by the Theater District at Goddess and the Baker.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Head to Nonnina for some yummy Italian and even better service. We had some wine, pasta and salmon to celebrate my last night in the city. Call it a day by visiting another Varela’s Family recommendation and favorite: The Redhead Piano Bar. This energetic, fun and light-hearted venue is a fantastic spot where to drink your sorrows away, sing your heart out and laugh as hard as you can. The talented crew at the piano and mic will sing your requests for tips and will cheer and entertain your night with fine tunes, Chicago’s stories and public interaction that will certainly lift any night and place a unique bow on your unique Chicago Farewell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4 days in Chicago is not enough, specially if the cold forces you to be inside. I guess the same applies in summer: it wont be enough either due to the outdoor activities the city will offer.  Next time I will drive a little bit uptown heading to Superdawn, the traditional and well known Chicago sausage drive thru. I would also love to visit Manny’s Place, a traditional deli that’s been around for quite a while now, as well as to Kingston Mines, the traditional blues bar near Lincoln Park and Zoo -which we did actually go but too early for a show- as well as another fun and very hard to find ( I need to research a little bit more) tiki-bar speakeasy called three dots and a dash. Chicago, you’ve been awesome - I’ll be back!

During this year’s Baselworld, I made all possible to visit the Frederique Constant booth. One of the watches that I enjoyed was the Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph, Ref. FC-397HNR5B6. This reverse panda dial is part of a special collection – the Vintage Rally. Frederique Constant dedicated, over the years, several series of watches to the Austin Healey vintage rally cars. Especially since the brand participated, as the Official Timekeeper, to the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge. These are my impressions about the Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph, Ref. FC-397HNR5B6.
Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph. The reviewed watch received some serious hits and scratches – perfect to see how the chrono will behave on serious, carefree wear.
Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph
I do enjoy the brand a lot. The good quality and affordable prices made me return to the Frederique Constant Boutiques. I ended owning, over the years, four of their timepieces. So the Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph was love at first site. Have a look at the wrist role below.
youtube
Watches and cars go hand in hand
The Frederique Constant and Austin Healey automobiles partnership is just one of the many existent today. Watches and cars, cars and watches go so well together. Most of the people passionate about mechanics enjoy watches and cars. And since the watches were used since the beginning of the rallying for timekeeping, there is no wonder how well these two objects end up often together.
An Aston Healey NOJ393 model car find in the retail package of the Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph watches
The joint project of Frederique Constant and Austin Healey automobiles celebrates the fifteen-year partnership. The Vintage Chronograph embodies the connection between timeless, horological savoir-faire of Frederique Constant and the know-how of automotive engineering of Austin Healey automobiles.
For those familiar with Frederique Constant watches, the Vintage Rally chrono will be just like a blue déjà vu.
Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph – a beautiful line of vintage Chronos
The  Vintage Rally Healey follows the familiar design lines of the Frederique Constant watches. The beautiful steel case measures 42mm in diameter. The 14.45mm height is normal for this type of watch. The dimensions are balanced and make the watch look good.
The watch is designed from a series of curves, elegantly combined to give a vintage note to a modern construction.
One of the first detail that one can observe at this watch is the lack of sharp edges. All over the watch, the edges are rounded, all the surfaces are convex or bombe. Even the side case and the bezel are convex. The back case makes no exception.
Note on the fine curved lines that give the Vintage Rally Healey not only an elegant touch but also a comfortable wear.
The Healey chronograph was fitted with two lovely classic chrono pushers adorned with a hobnail pattern or clous de Paris. Again, the size and the shape are well integrated into the overall balanced design.
The side view of the Vintage Rally Healey
The crown is decorated with the brand logo and offers a good grip for setting and winding. As a personal remark: I have difficulties getting the crown in the second position for the setting. Otherwise, the watch is easy to wind and set. The chronograph function is also pleasant to use.
A splendid reverse panda dial that offers multiple decorations dedicated to a better legibility
An informative reverse panda dial
The Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph has a relative busy dial. The time display uses luminous alpha hands (or lance type). The hour hand reaches out to three-dimensional indexes: Arabic numerals for 12 and 6 o’clock and silver applied indices for the rest of the time. Except for 3 and 9 o’clock, where the chrono minutes, respectively small seconds subdials are placed. The hands and the indexes are filled with white SuperLuminova.
The chrono seconds’ hand hovers over an outer rail track
Apart from the hour indexes, all the information is printed on the dial using contrasting colours: black on white and white on blue. The watch offers excellent legibility.
The grey Healey logo is visible at 6 o’clock.
The small seconds, the chrono’s central seconds and the chrono’s minutes hands are painted in red. Not only the contrast and the legibility are enhanced, but also the entire dial’s beauty gains from this detail.
The small-seconds subdial with 15 seconds numerals and bold indices
The 30-minutes chronograph uses a central seconds red hand. The two chapter rings, black printed indexes on a white background and, the second, raised track with white indexes on a blue background offer a precise readout.
The 30-min counter uses negative printed indexes. I think the readout is well enhanced using this subterfuge.
Despite the fact that the Vintage Rally Healey has a relative busy dial, all the details are used to enhance the legibility. The proportions are well chosen: the length of the hands, the raised outer chapter ring, the size and shape of the indexes. I simply cannot complain about any of these elements. I can rather say that I found them not only cute but also useful.
The Swiss beating hearth
The Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph is powered by the Calibre FC-397. This automatic chronograph movement is based on an ETA/Valjoux workhorse or a Selita Sw510 (most probably, since the brand uses various Selita movements). How much personalisation was made, I have no idea. Certain is that the calibre will be robust and easily serviceable.
The screwed in back case features a see-through sapphire, revealing the FC397 movement. Note that this watch was a prototype and does not feature the final engravings. Also, the reference number is not the correct one.
Judging after the simplicity of the finishes (just an overall polish) that also the movement is not finished to the final stage. The Frederique Constant decoration, even if machine made, include perlage, Geneva waves and other small but significant details.
After revisiting the pictures and having a look at the other Vintage Rally Healey Chronographs, I noticed that this simplicity of the movement is present in several timepieces. While the polished movement is not unpleasant, it is unusual, at least for me, to see this lack of decoration in this watch – a Frederique Constant piece. Maybe it has to do with the relatively low price. A rich decoration will result in an increased price. Taking that into account, the price justifies the product (or the product justifies the price). But these are only speculations.
The gold plated rotor weight with Frederique Constant engraving is present on all automatic watches from the brand.
The Aston Healey Chronograph has a power reserve of 46 hours. This is achieved using a 4Hz or 28’800alt/h, 25 jewels and a single barrel.
The retail package
For 2.595€, including free shipping, Frederique Constant offers a nice package. The watch comes with two straps: a blue leather strap with red stitches and an additional sportive textile strap, red and blue.
The Austin Healey Chronograph with the leather and textile strap
Both straps look and fit superb the Vintage Rally Healey theme. The red accents on a blue background is a lovely combination for a watch.
On the textile strap, the movement is covered by the NATO style band.
The pin buckle is a Frederique Constant standard type with the brand’s logo engraved.

The retail package also contains an Austin Healey model car with metallic green paint. Gorgeous model.

Final Impressions
I really enjoy the Austin Healey Collection and the Vintage Rally Chronograph. While the older versions are nice and with an exquisite well taste colour selection, this blue white red theme is the dearest to me.
My favourite piece from the Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Healey Chronograph
The watch is absolutely amazing. It was love at the first site. Being acquainted with the Austin Healey Collection of Frederique Constant, I can surely say that this last piece is my all time favourite. Great looking watch, with a precise readout and an amazing retail package at a good price. It is not easy to find something similar on the market.

Boston City Guide - Some of My Favorite Places
While I don’t pretend to be an expert on things to do in Boston, I can tell you the places that I’ve enjoyed going the last few times that I’ve been to visit my daughter Rebecca. This trip, my youngest daughter Sarah, came from Nashville and met us there. It was her first trip and unfortunately, it was very very cold so we made the best of it by shopping, eating amazing food, and exploring new neighborhoods.
NEWBURY STREET - BOSTON
Newbury Street is Boston's most enchanting street….it may not be the very best shopping, but the charm definitely makes up for that.  Eight blocks filled with salons, boutiques, and fabulous dining. Boston's Newbury Street has something for everyone. Some of my favorite shops are Aesop for the most fabulous skincare products, Rag and Bone for an amazing selection of jeans and boots and Alice and Olivia for funky fun clothes.
STEPHANIES ON NEWBURY STREET - LOVE IT FOR LUNCH
Restaurants come and go on Newbury Street, but Stephanie’s On Newbury is one of my favorites! Stephanie’s is casual elegance at its best with one of city’s most fashionable sidewalk cafés, although it was too cold to eat outside while we were there! You’ll love the bar and lounge overlooking Exeter Street and cozy sky-lit dining spaces…not to mention the lobster guacamole!
BOSTON FINE ARTS MUSEUM
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced that the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is one of 13 buildings to receive a prestigious 2011 RIBA International Award for architectural excellence.
From the opening of its first location in Copley Square through today, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), has undertaken a series of renovation and expansion projects. We were fortunate to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit while we were there, which was beyond excellent!
CHICKADEE RESTAURANT
Chickadee Restaurant is a small restaurant with delicious food that we found on this trip! Chickadee is a New England born and Mediterranean inspired restaurant situated in the heart of Boston’s Innovation and Design Building. Named after the state bird of Massachusetts, Chickadee is a collaboration between long time friends and industry veterans, Chef John daSilva and Ted Kilpatrick. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the food, and the wine selection was excellent! Pictured below are chickpea fries that we devoured!
TATTE BAKERY
Founder Tzurit Or started Tatte Bakery & Café in 2007, baking 20 hours a day in her home kitchen and selling her delicious creations to Boston farmers’ markets. After only one summer, Tatte expanded to its first brick-and-mortar bakery in Brookline, Massachusetts. When she opened her very first location she wanted it to feel welcoming, as if someone was hugging you, a home away from home. She has since opened eleven Tatte cafes but the aim has always remained the same; each Tatte has its own individual sense of identity, feel and style but they all stay true to the original spirit – to what Tatte is all about. Tatte has become one of my favorite places to go for brunch while in Boston and I promise, you will not be disappointed!
BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
Established in 1848 by an act of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts, the Boston Public Library was the first large free municipal library in the United States.  In 1986, the National Park Service designated the McKim building a National Historic Landmark, citing it as “the first outstanding example of Renaissance Beaux-Arts Classicism in America.” Within the McKim Building are exquisite murals series by John Singer Sargent, Edwin Austin Abbey, and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, a peaceful inner courtyard, and additional works of famed sculptors and painters that can be viewed via the library’s daily art and architecture tours.
FAIRMONT COPLEY PLAZA
This luxury downtown Boston landmark hotel has been a symbol of the city's rich history and elegance since its gala opening in 1912.  Centrally located in Boston's historic Back Bay, Fairmont Copley Plaza sits steps away from the Boston Public Library, historic Beacon Hill, and the Freedom Trail. This historic landmark Back Bay hotel is a luxury four diamond property located only a few blocks from the Hynes Convention Center, Copley Place Mall and the boutiques of Newbury Street. We didn’t stay there this time, but we had a delicious lunch there and coffee every morning. It’s so elegant and beautiful that I just love being there! We’ll definitely be staying at the Fairmont next time we’re in Boston.
EATALY BOSTON
“In November 2002, the Eataly concept was born from Oscar Farinetti’s idea sketched on a piece of paper.
The idea was simple: to gather under one roof high-quality food at sustainable and reasonable prices for ALL, celebrate Italian biodiversity, and create an informal, natural, and simple place to eat, shop, and learn.
The name EATALY is a fusion of two words: EAT and ITALY
As a result, Eataly stands for “Eating Italian” which encompasses the history and the food culture of Italy, the ease to prepare its dishes, and the many qualities that Italy has to offer.
After five years of research and hard work, the first Eataly opened its doors in Torino on January 27, 2007, when an old vermouth factory was transformed into Eataly Torino Lingotto – the very first multifunctional marketplace dedicated to Italian excellence in the world.
And the rest is history. Since then, Eataly has expanded, with more than 35 locations throughout Italy and the world.” If you’ve never been to Eataly, find one and go. It’s an experience like no other! I could spend days wandering around and especially eating!
SEPHORA AT COPLEY PLACE
We all love to shop and it was so cold during our visit that we spent some time in the mall (ok, maybe a lot of time). We totally enjoyed getting our makeup done by Anastasia Beverly Hills makeup artists at Sephora! My favorite new makeup palette that I got while I was there is the Norvina palette by Anastasia Beverly Hills. I’m still trying to replicate the exact look!
FRENCHIE RESTAURANT - AMAZING FOR DINNER OR FOR BRUNCH
Frenchie Restaurant is a French cuisine made in house using locally sourced and sustainable products. Served with awesome wines and cooked by executive chef Alex Falconer.
SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD
The last day we were in Boston, was of course, the prettiest and warmest, and we had such a nice time walking around and exploring the South End Neighborhood! The South End is a culturally rich neighborhood with restored Victorian row houses surrounding charming English-style squares. We loved popping in the cute boutiques and seeing the beautiful architecture.
WESTIN COPLEY PLACE
We stayed at the Westin Copley Place while in Boston. It’s a large hotel and the best part about it is that it is connected to two large malls…The Prudential Center and Copley Place. This was so nice, especially on the day that the high was 23 degrees, because we didn’t have to go outside. I’m not sure I could live in Boston because of the cold, but it’s a great place to visit! Maybe my next trip should be in September instead of February! I would love to go and see Boston Harbor when it’s warm!
The two pictures of the city were taken from our room at the Westin. The views were breathtaking!
A few other restaurant recommendations for eating out in Boston are Alden and Harlow, Southern Proper for fun and very casual Southern food, Puritan & Company, Pammy’s, Oleana and Mare Oyster Bar. There are so many, but these are ones that we’ve enjoyed!
I hope this guide helps if you’re planning a trip to Boston! Thanks so much for reading today! Please be sure to check out my Pinterest Boards as I’ve been trying to get them more organized and add great Spring fashion!
