Spoilers for season one Next in Fashion!
Okay I'm going to do a Next in fashion video analysis of all the contestents the fashion the winners as well as an analysis on the show and my personal opinion.
Spoilers under cut- images of outfits for Episode one.
Next in Fashion Season one has a diverse cast of different colours both inside and out. Wether they are queer, straight black or white this is a room full of creatives in a competition giving a prompt.
The best part? That so many are proffesionals, I rarely see people who have already worked with A-listers and considered the best of the best competing against each other its like seeing the olympics but for artistic expression.
This group was full of loud, expressive and creative personalities all in one room.
So I can't really speak about culture or other prejudice- but I do want to talk about the outfits and my own opinions on who won and who went home. I disagreed with some of the judges takes and opinions while others I agreed with.
I kinda fell in love with Next in fashion but I will admit I am aware it was a mixed bag full of...issues, there were some things that I did deem problematic. But when the season expressed itself as activists, bringing awareness I would've assumed they would put things in place to accomadate that in the next season.
Overall, I think Next in Fashion season one;
Is a window into the fashion world.
It felt as if all these designers who worked with a-list celebrities were getting their voices heard. It was an insight into the fashion industry and was able to present a ton of hard topics and discussions in a way that was relatable and beliveable.
They revealed hard truths, ones I especially agree with and find understandable. Which I'll get to later, just to let you know in advanced though.
I know nothing about fashion-
but I do find an interest in it, as a creator I know I cant wear certain clothes but my characters can and find I have one ear on the fashion world but overall I dont know enough to be a professional.
So we start with the first episode: The red Carpet.
A look you can see actors, hollywood stars and influencers to wear and be interviewed on the red carpet something bold, stunning as well as jaw dropping so who did I think should've won and whose outfit was just not my idea of what I'd call great [but to remind you guys the reason I'm not a fashion person is that art is subjective what I find meh someone can love and it can be developed into an open market as long as theres a target audience and people like something then theres no such thing as bad art]
So onto the prompt: RED CARPET.
Winner: Angelo and Charles. Sent Home: Issac and Nasheli.
First off I have to say- this sucked. It was so unfair for Nasheli to leave especially since Issac was a huge tit. He did fuck all, gave Nasheli shit material and told her to make it work then said we're a team :D and when he was sent home he gave no shit- he said it was just another day! This was grossly unfair to Nasheli she should've been put on a different team or should've been asked to come next year and try again she deserved another chance it was grossly unfair that she was tripped at the finish line and couldn't have a chance to show off her talent because of an incompetent partner.
Anyway: Angel and Minju Red Carpet piece.
Tumblr media
I loved this, I love the colour, the boy and the silouette. I find this so pretty and fell in love with this outfit on the spot 10/10 :D
Next up is : Ashton and Marco
Tumblr media
Its a no from me 4/10, my reason is that I find this so basic, its a boring silouette feels like something someone wore back in the 2000's also that belt in the middle of her chest? I hated that when she moved it was moving and flip flopping all over the place it distracted me and made me look at her boobs even in the shot above I can see the belt moving slightly. I dont hate the dress but for a red carpet its a meh.
Next up is : Issac and Nesheli
Tumblr media
I think the overall look the collor plus the bust and the oversized pocket at her stomach is distracting my focul point was aimed there instead of the overall look. The fabric was uncomfortable for the model to move in and couldn't go to the bathroom overall wearability was non existent. What is heartbreaking was how most voices in the show was steamrolled by their partners and most felt as if they werent heard. In this sense it's awkward because of artistic differences you dont know wether to trust your partner if their choice ends up making or breaking your chance in the competition. 1/10
Next up is farai and Kiki:
Tumblr media
Again I love this colour and overall liked the look, when I first saw it I loved it. But the more I looked at it I thought hmm so it's more of a 7/10 personally I do think it looks more like something my mum would wear on holiday at the beach than a red carpet if I could change one thing it would be the jacket. Either have that fabric pattern at the top or bottom of the outfit OR Change the jacket to a darker purple to make it more as a gradient.
Tumblr media
I think if it was a slightly shade darker it would be able to narrow down the focul point better- but I'm speaking as an artist on colour theory not as a pro fashion advice I am aware fashion is different so even though thats my personall opinion on the change I'm aware that sometimes peoples ideas are different to mine.
Next up is : Carli and Daniel
Tumblr media
I might get a few raised eyebrows but this was a meh, from me. I thought it was safe I did like the colours pearing blues with browns and a soft white as the top colour theory, and structure as well as the bold move of a pant/skirt with pockets! Did look amazing. Idk I just think it was a 6/10 for me.
Next up is : Narresh and Lorena
Tumblr media
HARD YES 10/10 I loved this outfit, I like the shape, the colours I love the back as well as the asymetrical sleeve I just- I freakin love this outfit I would want to wear this and twirl around in it.
Next up is : Julian and Hayley
Tumblr media
I liked it at first, but yeah it does seem a bit incomplete but overall 5/10
And then theres : Claire and Adolfo
Tumblr media
hmm Nope. NOPE. I don't like it 0/10- look art us subjective not many people will love it and I'm not one of those people, there is artistic differences and as an artist I don't like it. Other than the split at the side but it feels done before, and it feels so rubbery and stiff when the model walks, I just I cant nope.
And last but not least, Angelo And charlie.
Tumblr media
My immiediete thought was "The matrix." Or any other 90's film. I do like the hot pink skirt just peeking out on the back but overall. Its kinda basic just another black dress I can't even love the trail when the model walked I couldn't help but think it wasn't laying right and seemed to be stiff once she dropped it. I can't help but think that the judges were too blown away by the tail drop than to actually see the dress it makes me think of x-factor when they give the golden buzzer to the child singer. Not because they were good or it was a talented song just because it was instent gratification. Overall I like it but its just meh to me 4/10....which is ironic since they're the ones who WON.
So yeah since what I LIKED and what the judges choose, just comes to show why I'm not making a career out of fashion either I'm too far ahead or tar far behind the times for what fashion even IS I just get annoyed that what I happen to like was something the judges were put off by...so let me know what YOU guys think were good tell ME which red carpet look you would rank out of 10 and let me know for the red Carpet look who YOU think the winner should've been???
I might do more episodes if this does well but if not? w/e

Probs a little unpopular opinion 😂 but I am watching Next In Fashion and like I’m quite angry of how Farai and Kiki were judge. They weren’t my favs but I bet you that later on people will steal their designs, the world love to hate and judge black fashion until they steal it.

I don't know if this is tumblrs fucking dead rabbit algorithm or if really nobody on this site is talking about Farai's speech on "next in fashion". Stop gushing about how cute uwu the judges are and get real. That right there in ep4 was a true moment.

I've been watching Next in Fashion with my mom these past few days. She's a seamstress so she liked this idea of a sewing competition. We just finished ep 4 and started ep 5 cuz we had to know what happened after that cliffhanger ending. I need to say this.
No. I don't like that they essentially ignored the streetwear challenge and began another challenge with 6 teams. I feel that they should have either done a vote (it seemed like it was 3 to 1) or a faceoff between the 2 teams. In my opinion, Farai and Kiki should have been the eliminated team, that was already their 3rd time in the last two. It is annoying and frustrating honestly, but oh well. Just had to get out my personal opinion.

watching next in fashion episode 4 and kiki & farai are so right. Also it got me thinking how African American culture is not rlly seen as culture? Farai was saying how these looks are street wear but it only gets noticed when it’s high end, so getting noticed as a minority is really hard, which is so true. And that one judge (I think he’s a celebrity stylist) was saying I get it, it’s still happening to me, you just need one yes. It felt like saying oh that’s not a real struggle etc,

Up next for rage blogging a netflix show as I watch it: Next in Fashion
- Omg everybody’s outfits and their personalities!!! <3 <3 <3 It’s really painful that every episode someone gets eliminated because they are all so amazing.
- Really hated Isaac’s attitude, though, and the dynamics that resulted from pairing him with Nasheli. She deserved so much better! She would have done so much better with another partner! It was extremely unfair to her.
- I especially loved Carli and Daniel’s pantsdress in ep 1 - I really wish I could wear it! :O
- Painful watching Hayley and Julian - he was such a character and I would have liked to see more of both of their work, but they just did not fit together. No surprise at all that the teams who know each other well and have worked together a lot already are the most successful.
- In the streetwear competition, on a scale from 1 to 10, how racist was it that both of the teams chosen as the bottom two had the only Black women, and the only Black people left in the competition? In streetwear? Seriously? Bless guest judge Kerby Jean-Raymond. The show is edited and scripted to be extremely emotional (literally people are crying all the time, it’s fantastic), but at that point, when he decided to walk out, I truly felt it so much. Love him. Love Kiki and Farai, who are constantly being judged much harsher than the other contestants. Thankfully here the “nobody gets eliminated” move was used for good, and not to keep in boring old white guys like in Blown Away ... because there are no boring old white guys in this show! Yay! :D
UPDATE 1:
Ep. 5 - I’m not that interested in underwear, but I really enjoyed all the boxer shorts for the women’s looks. And Angel’s men’s look was amazing! I wish they would have shown it without the jacket. There was way too much focus on the made-up bra support issue. Women actually like to feel comfortable, and wasn’t it interesting that both of the all-women teams made bras without wires ... maybe because they know how uncomfortable that shit is?! So yeah ... :-/ To be honest it felt like a setup that the tops MUST have underwire and pushup. (That’s so 90′s though?) The judges didn’t ask Farai and Kiki’s model how she felt in it, like they asked one of the others, they just straight up decided to hate their creation because of the missing underwire. They acted so rude when they were looking closer at their design, the whole “What’s this?!” and pawing right under the model’s boobs. :/ Also I didn’t like Claire’s attitude and being angry that nobody was eliminated last time - so she’d have preferred if her own team was eliminated? And guess what ...
Ep. 6 - Claire and Adolfo were eliminated, so maybe it taught her a lesson to not throw her own people under the bus? Or not ... I don’t know, it was somehow interesting how she stressed her Asian half at the end (in the speech about how she is still to be taken seriously even though she is small and half Asian), as if she wanted to distance herself from her Blackness, and look away from how racist the elimination process was? I may be reading too much into it - I’m also mixed race and really interested in how other mixed race people experience it. Still impressive that Claire and Adolfo got so far without having worked together before, if I’m not mistaken. Btw one of the judges went out of their way to compliment the unfinished edges on one look, while it had been so harshly criticized when Farai and Kiki did unfinished edges on the streetwear challenge. Sigh. All the looks in this challenge were really great, and I guess that says something about my own style ... \m/
I don’t know if I want to keep watching, because the judges are so irritating (sorry Tan :( ) and the elimination part is so stressful ... But I also want to see more amazing clothes and how these amazing people make them in such a short time!
UPDATE 2:
Ep. 7 - Nooo, Angelo ... It was totally fair that he was eliminated for his grave lack of technical skill, I just loved watching him on the show so much. Together with Charles they were unstoppable and complemented each other so well, but apart? ;___; Same with Carli, together with Daniel they were awesome. I could relate a lot to wanting to quit instead of finishing something half-assed. :/ So nice that other contestants were looking out for her. It felt a bit more relaxing to watch now, although the stakes keep getting higher and the contestants fewer, but it seems like they are being judged more fairly now that Anti-Black racism is off the table lmao ... Sigh, I’d really love to watch arts and crafts contests with only Black judges and contestants. + I adore Adidas and wear way too much of it, but cringe at Jo Aberg’s heavy Swedish accent, haha (I used to live in Sweden and way too many of them go around telling foreigners that Swedes don’t have an accent when they speak English *eyeroll*).
Ep. 8 - Daniel seems like such a genuinely nice and caring person, so it’s kind of okay that the white guy stayed in the game over the two Asian guys. Charles on his own was perhaps missing Angelo’s pizzazz ^^ ... I liked Marco and his stuff a lot, and it seemed a bit like a setup here, too, that they criticized his design for being “too costumey” (I kind of hate that word now thanks to this series) and he got thrown off, instead of just doing his thing the way he wanted it, regardless of whether he would be eliminated for it.  Kind of “pro wrestling” that Minju was so freaked out by the challenge and then she made the best look hands down. Loved it! Especially with the leather band/harness - I don’t get why they criticized it. Overall I was a bit disappointed in all the other looks, because I like a lot about military style, but very few except Minju used the kind of stuff that I like. I didn’t really like Angel’s look that much - the concept was amazing, but that coat seemed a bit awkward to wear and I’m a bit confused about why everyone liked it so much, but maybe I just don’t get that about fashion. Happy for her though! Many of her other looks have been really great. + Judge Elizabeth’s crooked tie drove me bonkers. WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE FASHION WHEN YOUR TIE DOES NOT COVER YOUR TOP BUTTON. lol
UPDATE 3: SEMIFINALS
I’m happy for Minju and Daniel and can’t wait to see them in the finale! I liked Ashton’s looks so much! I’d love to wear the women’s top (and maybe I will try to sew something similar for myself :-p). Loved the reference to hakama - I thought he made all the right choices of what to adopt from the inspiration. A bit bummed that he got eliminated, especially since he was so community oriented when he talked about what it would mean for him to win.  I squealed when I heard Angel’s inspiration, Tibetan horse racing! Here I felt like the looks were a bit far off from the inspiration. But they looked so gorgeous. Maybe if she’d used the bleach lace pattern (on the edges for example) it would have been even more amazing. The women’s look was so great! Though I was a bit concerned about the crotch exposure :D Overall maybe Angel didn’t need the win so I guess it’s fine that she got eliminated. I’m a bit confused about why they were so in awe about Daniel’s looks. Both of the looks were really nice and clean, but I didn’t think they were all that interesting or innovative, and the message was a bit simplistic. And I literally made a similar quilt a few months ago, so I can’t really agree with the “it’s NEVER been done before” sentiments. I’m really looking forward to his stuff in the finale though! For Minju I felt the same, it was great, but I couldn’t really relate to how they thought it was so new and fresh. The men’s pant length would have surely gotten her eliminated if she’d been Black, haha. Can’t wait to see what she makes in the finale - I’ve loved almost everything she did so far.
UPDATE 4: FINALE!!!
OMFG MINJU!!!!! YAY!!!!! Aaaaah, her collection was so beautiful and fun! And all women’s looks! It was so nice!  It was so nice that Minju’s sister also realised that she had held Minju back creatively and that it was wrong to do that. I didn’t read spoilers about the ending, and kept nervously thinking that it wouldn’t surprise me if Daniel the white guy won the entire competition, but then Minju won and Daniel was so happy for her! <3 <3 <3 I cried so much!

A few thoughts about Next In Fashion
I really don't like casting shows cause all those stories about background, childhood, obstacles usually sound acted to me but dang, Next In Fashion is good. They limited those teary moments to the minimum, which help us like/understand the designers but not roll our eyes at them. The designers were really talented, maybe not always well-paired, but always managing to do their best together.
I love that two halves of my fav teams, Angel with Minju and Carli and Daniel got to the final. I think their designs were always strong looks but they tried their best to also challenge themselves a bit. They weren't always making in what they felt secure but trying to understand the theme in their own style. Maybe it's because simpler, more minimalistic looks speak to me more, rather than Farai/Kiki/Angelo ones, full of everything everywhere. Anyway, the two pairs I liked at first were most successful so I guess Tommy Hilfiger was right about first choice lol.
I love how finally, the Daniel and Minju collections were very very different, just like their runways but I think after Minju's show the result was obvious, especially after her final dress with the "wow effect". I believe that they chose for the final 2 people who had vision, skills and potential.
I would have settled for the simpler/more useful in a Queer-Eye-way tips on Tan and Alexa side but it was a good choice to get them host the show. Positive, likeable people with fashion knowledge. I like their insides, especially at the beginning of each challenge. They really make you understand the nature of the theme which at first may seem too easy/obvious (when you're a fashion ignorant like me a bit) but then yiu realize that it really is a wide range of possibilities.
That being said, it was fun. Because they chose really talented people, I had a feeling that this is really o competition of skilled and talented people which was nice. I really hope they'll get season 2!

Kiki and Farai are also really good friends? Who worked together on the Nicki Minjai collection (which I didn’t know existed)? The designer dynamics of this show are wildly different than what I am used to.

Good Friends - Daniel & Minju

so ep 4 with kiki and farai....
farai was right in what she said. our culture is constantly stolen and our work isn’t considered ‘high fashion’ until a nonblack person does it. the theme was streetwear and kerby got it because it was pure Brooklyn Black culture and he’s from Brooklyn and he’s Black. is their design suddenly bad because the judges don’t understand that kind of Black fashion?
and kerby was right, if kiki and farai are put in the bottom two because of construction, then the other team(s) with bad execution need to be in the bottom as well.
sure kiki and farai had been in the bottom before but again Kerby was right when he said if the show was looking for future, innovative ideas, that’s what kiki and farai gave them. are we judging people by their past works or are we judging them on today’s challenge?
i didn’t like the other team’s work at all. they shouldve went home imo.

Angel & Minjus look was cute and playful but not lingerie and definitely not sexy...unfortunately. The guys outfit was a joke. It was so cute that I'd wear it. (I'm a girl) and I think it's super freaking adorable but for a female lol idk any men in my life who would wear that let alone consider it sexy or lingerie.
But the woman's was cute too. Just should have taken those two pale offwhite layers of lace and pulled it around the backside of the dress to line the backside, kinda draping down would have been cuter in my opinion.
And Farai & Kikis...i think y'all know how I feel about this. The unjustice. Was definitely Top 2 but okay judges.
