Do you have any trans fem light headcanons?

I always have Light headcanons 👁️👁️

Usually I hc Light as bigender (she/her used generally as Kira-specific given that I think that's the only other spot in his life that he could acknowledge as a change in who he was SUPPOSED to be rather than who she really IS), because I do think Light actually does feel mentally aligned to his masculinity in a solid capacity, just not completely so, but! I can totally cook up something for trans fem Light :3

I actually have thought about this before—it's somewhere in my long ass wip ideas list—but the snag I always hit is Light even,,,,figuring out that she's trans :/ Because canon Light tends to just ignore when he feels bad in any sort of emotional or mental capacity, so dysphoria would probably ping "his" radar as something to go "Welp, time to ignore that! ᕕ(; ᐛ )ᕗ" about. So I see Light discovering it either young enough that she doesn't know that she should be denying it yet, or old enough that she could move towns and change her name with little fuss—never speaking to her family again, of course, but that's the price of being trans in early 2000s Japan with traditionalist parents :') Sayu might eventually go looking for her though. Sayu strikes me as someone open-minded.

BUT, these two options have different catalysts. If Light discovers it young enough for Sachiko to see it as "okay" to socially transition, then Sayu is the catalyst. Sayu has lots of pretty, traditionally feminine things, and she wants to play with her brother—which, of course, Light indulges. Sayu bullies Light into dressing up to play with her, she does makeovers with him, he does her hair and make-up and she does his (and while I usually hc Soichiro finding out and gently but firmly putting a stop to that, for this AU let's say he doesn't find out). Light, after enough times doing this with Sayu, probably notices the fact that he actually prefers Sayu's things to his own. He probably permanently borrows a hair pin or two, maybe even buys a few of his own when he runs errands for his mom. And Sachiko inevitably finds out about it, but again. Sachiko is just as much of a snake as Light in that she's cunning and able to switch faces quickly. So she probably has a long talk with Light about why he bought them and what's going on, and he confesses (after much manipulative prodding) that he doesn't "feel right", that he hasn't for a while, and he thinks it might be because he's a boy.

So Sachiko does what any good mom would do; she fixes it. Light would be young here, seven to ten I'm thinking, enough that it wouldn't be hard for Sachiko to buy Light some new clothes and start introducing her as a daughter. When Soichiro comes home, she sits him down after the kids are asleep and tells him what's going to happen. She does not ask for permission or his thoughts on it. She goes "Light is our daughter now and you'll treat her as such. We're moving cities in two weeks so she can have a new start in a new school. If anyone ever asks we've always had two daughters." Soichiro is bewildered of course, and instinctively affronted at the idea, but Sachiko steamrolls him. Queen Gaslighter, your honor, and her new Princess Gaslighter who learned from the best. They do as Sachiko bids, and Light is able to live her life unimpeded.

HOWEVER. If Light figures it out as an adult, then RYUK is the catalyst. Human Ryuk, of course, as I don't see grown-up Light with the Death Note having time to realize anything like that when he's busy manipulating the Task Force and his own father and the SPK and Misa and Mikami and—you get it. Anyway, Ryuk is the one who makes Light realize that she's a she instead of a he. And, being the terrible influence/cynical voice of (sarcasm) reason he is, Ryuk is the one who encourages Light to go whole hog with vanishing off the face of the Earth and changing her name instead of transitioning in secret or telling her family. But again, by this time it's too late for Light to socially transition and keep her family; everyone knows Chief Yagami and his brilliant son, their extended family knows Sachiko had a boy and a girl. They wouldn't be able to take Light in as a daughter, only disown her as a son. And Light knows this, Ryuk knows this, but Ryuk is the one that knocks Light out of her self-sacrificing "I shall simply swallow it down and deal with the lot I've been handed, continue living my life as a man even though it grows ever-chafing and suffocating :)" and into "Fuck that. I'll be doing whatever I fucking want, actually, because I'm better than literally every other conceivable human being and I should be able to revel in my own splendor as the person I want to see in the mirror." Encouraging Light's ego is double-edged sword here, obviously, but try getting Ryuk to give a fuck ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Light abandons her life as a Yagami and Ryuk helps her forge some papers so she can get a job in Fukushima as an accountant/architect/designer/whatever the hell she wants to do as Asahi Tsuki. (This is one of the few scenarios I ever picture Light changing her name in. Only ever out of necessity. Her name was never the problem, and she likes it—she keeps it if she can).

I don't see Light's personality changing all that much? Save for the fact that transitioning probably yanks down the veil of her politeness a little and she acts a little bit more herself. I.e. mean and sarcastic but in a way you only realize three hours after the fact. Light's learned to go after what she wants viciously in this case, and is probably a little more indulgent of herself as well. Unlike canon Light, trans fem Light has learned to ask herself "What do I want?". She probably lets herself have things that she didn't before, like sweets and beautiful clothes and shiny trinkets and expensive stationary—things she actually likes instead of things she's expected to have. After all, if Light's going to be "selfish" why not go all in? ;3

Death Note would be drastically improved as a story if L was a woman. Light "proud misogynist" Yagami would throw such a pissy tantrum if the smartest detective in the world, his only intellectual equal and greatest opponent was a woman. Tbf Light would lose immediately bc he'd underestimate L and probably try to manipulate her with the very similar tactics he uses on the other women in his life. Imagine a world where Light loses against L bc he couldn't keep his misogyny in check. Peak fiction. Sadly this would never happen bc the only person who seems to hate women more than Light Yagami is Death Note's own creator Tsugumi Ohba.

Another Death Note AU I love to think about: Fem!Light x Male!L.

I adore these two in any form, but the potential of this dynamic in particular had me thinking plots that had my brain noodles excited since way back when I was in the middle of writing Time Speaks.

Now, L's gender wouldn't change anything about him, not really, but Light? Oh, it would be a whole new act for her to put on. And with L still male, it ensures it's not just a repeat of canon, but a whole new exploration of their characters, their dynamic, and the world they live in.

So in this AU, we have a Light Yagami who grew up in a society that told her she was lesser. That implied her gender was predictive of her place and abilities. But she wouldn't actually have a lot of anger about her gender I feel, since that goes against her natural feelings of superiority based on her intellect, so she'd just see it as the world being wrong as usual (rotten, if you will). She would look down on men for how easy they were to manipulate; not that anyone else would ever see these thoughts. Except Sayu, who Light raises with care.

Now, while said world would make it harder for her to rise up, Light is someone who gets what she wants and thrives on a challenge. She would use gender as her stepping stone, playing the "good girl" role to perfection.

And she'd be so very good at it. A much better manipulator than male Light.

Now, when she gets the Death Note, the story goes about the same at the start because Light Yagami is Light Yagami regardless.

Then in comes L, the first person who bested her, the first person she hates, and the plot changes. L is the only person, the only man, who looks at her and sees Kira. The only man who is deadpanned and blank to her "good girl" act and meets her provocation for provocation. Infuriating her every time they meet simply by being as smart as she is. By looking at her pointedly crossed arms, at her 'casual' forward-leaning posture, at her inviting smile--and blandly asking if her back hurts like his sometimes does.

How dare he.

How dare he see and value and fear her for her intelligence? He is certain she is Kira despite how aghast every other man and woman in her life is about the very idea of it.

They call L mad. Sexist. He ignores them and insists he's right, that no one else could be Kira but Light. That she's perfect.

And Light? She hates him for seeing through her. He scares her right back.

But she also can't stop herself from craving the acknowledgement.

The game between them would be so different and yet just as complicated this time, because while the two of them don't care about gender, they know this about each other, the rest of the world is not at their level and can't stop their bias about it. And Light uses that to her advantage; Kira will use any shield.

While L will do his best to strip her bare of all her lies.

So Light plays with the world's perceptions of womanhood in her war against L, using her 'weak' gender and 'need for protection' to manipulate the police against him. While L continues to pursue his Kira with a single-minded focus and certainty. He knows it's her.

But now he has to work even harder to prove it because no one is willing to listen to him. He has no proof, and in this universe, that means a lot more to the task force.

Light is smug about this, internally of course. She sweetly tells him to give up and start looking for the 'real' Kira.

L blinks at her and says he'll give up when she stops being a serial killer.

Light hates him.

But she also can't stop thinking about him. She can't stop revelling in how he sees her like no one else was ever willing to. And she eventually decides that she'll get him to give into her too, like she's gotten everyone else in her life. She'll make him admit he wants her, too. That he's human just like they all are, that he has feelings. (Just like she does).

She'll give him her attention in a way no one else has ever deserved. And L better appreciate it.

And after that? She'll kill him, of course.

She's Kira. She's pitiless. She plays to win.

But she might as well...enjoy L while he's here.

He's the only one she'd ever want to have in that way.

As for L? Well he's more than willing to play along, in any and all ways Light wants. He's seen her from the start, seen Kira behind her sweet smile, and he's entranced by her as always. He'd want her in any form, and gender is just one more tool of the brilliant mind he'll always be obsessed with, in any universe.

And he's absolutely thrilled at this game.

So, yeah!! I love this AU and one day, I'll write it, but for now thank you to the amazing artist @thanatelle who inspired these current thoughts! His work is so good <3

(I was thinking how I use to hate Light but the I realized all the guys I’ve had a crush on are exactly like him…)

Academic student! Light Yagami who since he was a little boy, only cared about his grades.

Academic student! Light Yagami who, even in his senior year of high school, never held a girls hand.

Academic student! Light Yagami who does have a lot of girls that want him and yet he pays them no mind.

Academic student! Light Yagami who met you when a you got paired together for a project.

“Nexted, let’s do…” your teacher scans the class, trying to figure out who doesn’t have a partner. “Light and (y/n).” Light scans the room for a “(y/n)”. He’s pretty self centred, forgetting peoples names after 3 seconds off knowing them.

Finally he finds you, looking at the work sheet your teacher previously handed out. Light wasn’t going to lie to himself. You are one of the most beautiful girls he set his eyes on but his main focus is his grades.

Once your teacher said begin, Light walked towards your desk with some of his notes in his hand. He takes an empty chair and pulls it to the opposite side of your desk. “Hi” A warm smile forms on his face. “Hey. Um let’s get started.” ‘Very straight to the point.’ Light thought as you pulled out both a blank piece of paper and the rubric.

“So what topic do you want to do?” You asked, placing the pieces of paper on the desk. “I think we should do this one.” Light points to the topic section on the rubric. “since it’s seems simple, but when you look more into it, it’s more complex than what most people think.” He continues. “Yeah I agree but…” Light rises an eyebrow. “Don’t you think that there are limited things we can write for it?” You question.

Light is confused. Because he’s so smart, no one really question his better judgment, especially when it comes to projects. “Well what do you think we should do?” He asks “Well..” you look at the paper. “We should do it on the death penalty. Reason being, there is so much we can do for examples. We could reference crimes that didn’t deserve to have the penalty. We could reference ancient be headings. We can also contrast and compare certain ones and use out better judgment to determine if they were deserved or not.” You continue.

“Hey..” He’s impressed. “I really like that idea. Yeah let’s do that.” He smiled. A slight blushie smile appeared on your face. You were kind of rambling yet he was still really engaged. Usually people just tune out what your saying.

Academic student! Light Yagami who became more fond of you during and after the project done.

Academic student! Light Yagami who would help you with your work, if you help him with his.

Academic student! Light Yagami who started to come home later because you two would spend the weekends studying together.

Academic student! Light Yagami who suggests that after you’re done studying for the day, the two of you watch a movie before he leaves.

Academic student! Light Yagami who gets all red when you move closer to him.

Academic student! Light Yagami who when you fell asleep on him, stoped watching the movie to watch you. He admired every single one of your features. From the braids that he pushed out the way to see your face. To your lips that he stared at, imagining they were kissing all over him.

Academic student! Light Yagami who immediately stoped himself from thinking these thoughts but he couldn’t help it.

Academic student! Light Yagami who finally realizes and accepts the fact that he’s in love with you<3
