treehouse censoring even alfred's, kagetsu's, etc romantic lines in elyos after you s-support them....
#WHY!!!!#why let alfred say he loves you in his pact ring support but then not in the hub world???#avgn WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?.mp4#fire emblem engage#fire emblem#alfred fire emblem#i swear to god i will make a masterpost of every change at some point because this is insane.#regardless on whether people like how fe has dating sim elements there is no excuse for removing content that *isnt even problematic*#i am normally not someone who overly cares about FE censorship but in engage it was extremely excessive and with no rhyme or reason#hitting even characters that are over 18 in the datamined ages (which aren't even visible in game)....#hitting characters that otherwise WEREN'T censored but then are in other places#theres really no excuse for it especially when this is the game with the most textual m/m and f/f options to date#including characters like mauvier (he says he adores you in his wake up events!) who isnt just a bishounen (ignoring the bad 3d models lol)#thankfully mauviers wasnt censored too hard tho they still removed another reference of him saying he loves you! like why?#because romantic content does not change based on alear's gender; by removing romantic elements they also removed textual bisexuality#dont assume im also including jean and anna in that; because im not. but when its comes to characters that are of age as well...like come o#there also isnt any consistency. mauviers datamined age is 31 and zelkovs is 28; but zelkov is censored muuuuch harder#fe#fe17#its a little embarrassing to care about this sort of thing but its still content people are paying for that is removed which isnt okay#for the record ive played almost every FE game and enjoy them with or without dating sim elements.#but what i hate is this half baked situation#games#my post

Winners Round 2 Masterpost
Tumblr media
[Image ID: The Winners Round 2 Bracket. The matches are listed at the end of this post. End ID./]
It's finally time for Winners Round 2!!!
Some housekeeping things for the tournament:
Double Elimination format (so there will be a loser's bracket)
Propaganda is allowed and heavily encouraged! Submit propaganda either through the reblogs/replies of a match or in this blog's submissions box! Propaganda will be featured!
Please tag propaganda with #propaganda when you reblog!
That being said, please be nice about the propaganda. Any kind of attack on an opposing sibling duo must clearly read as light-hearted, and absolutely no attacking other people (eg don't say things like "If you actually like so-and-so duo, you're stupid")
Please don't be mean if your duo gets sent to losers bracket or eliminated. Nobody likes sore losers.
Matches are open and hyperlinked!
Winners Round 2:
Mercedes & Emile vs Leo & Corrin
Corrin & Lilith vs Ike & Mist
Alfred & Céline vs Diamant & Alcryst
Eirika & Ephraim vs Chrom & Lissa
Clanne & Framme vs Alear & Veyle
Alfonse & Sharena vs Xander & Camilla
Ninian & Nils vs Delthea & Luthier
Celica & Conrad vs Pandreo & Panette

Faye's Fòdlan Journey: Season 1 - Chapter 1: Welcome to Fòdlan
Introduction
<-Previous Masterpost Next->
Tumblr media
After two posts' worth of introductions and preambling, we can finally start playing the actual game.
Tumblr media
The objective is simple: Defeat the bandits' leader before they burn down the village. Easy enough.
Tumblr media
Weapon Durability returns in this game, contrary to Fates, Echoes and Engage. Personally I feel pretty neutral towards the mechanic as a whole, but it's a nice way to balance Combat Arts, returning from Echoes and consuming durability instead of HP this time.
Here when a weapon breaks, instead of disappearing altogether or turning into a worthless 30 weight 0 might weapon you have to repair or get rid off, it gets a penalty in Might, Hit and Attack Speed, which could be a more elegant solution depending on how severe it is.
Bows also seem to work like they did in Echoes, with an added penalty on hit the further you attack from. Which is, you know, pretty fair. Wonder if Hunter's Volley is just as busted here.
Tumblr media
After having a pleasant chat with the three completely ordinary kids, they along with Byleth begin clearing out the bandits, while Jeralt sits in the back doing fuck all and yelling random advice.
Thanks, dad. Really cool.
Good thing Edelgard's there to pick up his slack with the first crit of the game.
Tumblr media
Also the proportions between the characters and the village is really funny. My main Edelgard headcanon is that she's a huge kaiju fangirl, so it's nice to see she's fulfilling her dreams. All she needs now is learn how to fire a laser from her mouth.
Tumblr media
After killing a few bandits, their leader shows up to pick a fight with Byleth.
Tumblr media
They kill him pretty easily.
Except Kostas must have smuggled a Revival Stone from Elyos, since he gets back up like it's nothing.
Tumblr media
He charges at Edelgard, but Byleth puts themselves in the way.
But just when the bandit is about to strike...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The world stops.
And Byleth finds themselves in front of Sothis once more, who is pretty peeved they were about to throw away their life so recklessly, since that would also kill her.
Tumblr media
She finally introduces herself: Her name is Sothis, also known as "The Beginning". Though she wouldn't be able to tell you why is that, given that lo and behold, she has amnesia, the favorite plot point of modern Fire Emblem.
Someone had to have it, and since Byleth seems to have all of their memories, she lost her privilege to hers. Honestly, I think she'd get along with Alear.
One thing's for sure, though: Her first impression of Byleth is... less then stellar. While she lives and breathes sass and metaphors and moves and emotes a lot for someone with the eepy disease, Byleth is overly blunt, barely emotes and tells morbid jokes with such a straight face everyone thinks they're serious.
Or at least, I'm having them be that way. I love the idea of Byleth being selectively mute and socially inept.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also apparently support points can go down? I doubt you'd be able to get the characters to dislike you so it probably just hinders your progress to get their convos)
Apparently Sothis stopped time, something she herself didn't remember she could do. Well, that's convenient.
Luckily for both of them, she figures out she can reverse time too.
Not thanks to Byleth, who joked they could just sit here and wait to die.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sothis turns back time just enough for Byleth to react to the bandit's attack, bids them farewell with some cryptic nonsense and- wait, is that readable text?
Upon further inspection, it is, even if the only phrase I recognise is at the top, "The goddess always lives in heaven and Fòdlan" and "It is watching over us. The mother[???]".
That's neat! Didn't expect to see readable text in actual English. Usually this stuff is hidden with a special alphabet.
Anyway, this time instead of just putting themselves in front of Edelgard Byleth actually strikes back at the bandit leader, finally putting him down for good.
Tumblr media
Wait is he aware Byleth turned back time? How!?
Tumblr media
Byleth earns the MVP, which in this game looks like one of those photos you'd get for Employee of the Month. Which I suppose makes sense.
Tumblr media
A face shows late to the party. It's Alois, of the Knights of Seiros.
He's really happy to see Jeralt after 20 years, who apparently was the former captain.
Jeralt is way less thrilled to see him, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jeralt and Byleth are "invited" to return to the Garreg Mach Monastery with Alois and the Three House Leaders. I say "invited" becuse Jeralt clearly does not want to go there but feels he has no choice, and I suspect Byleth would just go wherever their father goes.
Before heading out, Byleth has a chat with Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude, who all seem... oddly interested in them.
Tumblr media
Huh. Jeralt would have done wonders in Elyos with a name like that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Claude makes it clear once again that our presence at the monastery is, in fact, mandatory. So for all of those who hoped there was a secret fifth route where Byleth just retreats to the woods and lives a long, peaceful life, I'm sorry to crush your dreams.
They finally mention they're students at the Officers Academy of the Monastery. And through a quarrel they immediately start with each other, we learn they're the heirs of their respective nations.
Whoah. Shocker, I know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And already not only they're fighting each other (seriously guys it's only the prologue, fucking chill), they are all strangely in awe of Byleth despite them having just killed a few bandits (with their help no less) and are already fighting each other to have them join their side. Boy, this does not bode well for the future.
Tumblr media
WAIT I ALREADY HAVE TO CHOOSE WHAT
I know I'm going to choose Dimitri regardless given this is Azure Moon, but GEEZ this is way too soon to force a choice like this onto the player! You just met these people and already you have to declare your allegiance to one of them!
With that choice way too important for just the prologue of the whole game being done, we finally head back to the monastery.
But not before Byleth ponders a bit about the three of them.
They think Claude has an easy smile that is striking as well as fake, that Edelgard is constantly judging them and that Dimitri seems honest but with a lot of darkness to hide. What that means, we still don't know.
All in all, a decent Prologue. There isn't a lot here to chew on, but it shows the basic mechanics fine enough. The lightning is great and I LOVE Fòdlan Winds as a track.
Fòdlan as a whole has a particularly distinct sound, I think. Though I wouldn't be able to tell you why.
I am still baffled they have you choose a route this soon, though, and while the house leaders bickering with each other already is just worrying in-universe for the storm that will one day come, the fact they already seem to be throwing themselves at Byleth's feet for just killing a few bandits is mainly concerning for the narrative.
While I don't think power fantasies are inherently a bad thing, I fear it wouldn't gel at all with what Fòdlan seems to be going for. But I guess we'll see.
Lastly before closing off, a few notes about the characters we met until now.
Seiros: Local goddess is fucking pissed. I guess we'll see the aftermath of what happened in the intro soon enough. Also I still swear her design is Greek-inspired.
Nemesis: Wonder what caused the war between him and Seiros to begin with?
My guess is likely the creation of the legendary weapons given that, you know, they seem to be made out of Seiros' family and that is enough reason for her to want him dead. But if that's the case, we still don't know why he did that. Is it just for power, or something else?
Byleth: Not gonna lie, getting a few red flags from the way they're handled. No customization options, a mostly silent protagonist, their dialogue choices may very well have barely any effect. Not to mention they already seem to sloowly gravitate the plot around them.
Jeralt:
Tumblr media
Jokes aside, he seems fine as a parent. Save for him not doing anything during a bandit attack.
The question is always not if he's gonna kick the bucket, but when. I even somewhat know the how.
Hey, he's a Fire Emblem parent, is that really a spoiler?
By the way, I'm suprised he's a Paladin. Always thought he was, you know, a Mercenary, but maybe that's just because I kept comparing him to Greil given they're both mercenary dads.
Sothis:
BEST GIRL BEST GIRL BEST GI-
*ahem*
I freaking love her.
She's the perfect combination between refined and a sassy chaotic gremlin, and she has one of my favorite tropes which is living inside another character's body. I am SO excited she can talk to Byleth whenever (and apparently read their thoughts?) and can't wait to see what they do with her!
Alois: Very little to say since we barely met him, but he seems a jolly fellow.
Claude: You know, maybe this is a 4D chess move I don't understand, but isn't the whole point of a schemer and deciever to NOT come across as sketchy? I feel constantly talking about how sus you are kinda undermines that but, what do I know.
Edelgard: Ah, the one who just mentioning her name starts a flame war. Not much to say about her yet, although she seems the type to sleep light with a few knives on her person, given how openly mistrusting of others she is.
Also she is a massive kaiju fangirl. I don't care how little sense that makes, you will have to take that headcnon from my dead body.
Dimitri: Honestly right now I'm just waiting to see what that "darkness" is about. I just know it will lead to him becoming VERY murdery in the timeskip so boy, can't wait to see him snap.

Welcome to Fire Emblem Showdown!
The goal of this blog is to post a series of 1v1 match-ups for each Fire Emblem game to find Tumblr's favorite character from each title. Eventually, this will culminate in the top character from each game squaring off against each other in a final set of polls!
To allow as many people as possible to vote (and to give me a break between posting sets of polls), the polls will all be timed for a week. These aren't going to be seeded brackets, I'll just do my best to make matches that aren't going to be one-sided stomps (unless the stomp is a good bit because I love to commit to a bit).
Occasionally, I may need to include 3 characters in a poll to even out the numbers; in that event the top two characters will progress and the third-place character will be eliminated.
Also just to be clear, in the event of a tie, both characters will move forward, but they will be given different opponents! I'm not a fan of the structure of moving tied characters ahead as a unit.

A newcomer’s guide to Fire Emblem
With the release of Fire Emblem: Engage, I figured out more people are trying to get into the Fire Emblem franchise, so I decided to create a masterpost including basic information about the games.
This post will give you a quick rundown on what is Fire Emblem, which games are connected with which and my recommendation on where to start.
So, without further ado:
What is Fire Emblem?
Fire Emblem is a series of tactical role-playing games created by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. Fire Emblem games take place in settings within a medieval time period. The franchise was established back in 1990 and currently consists of a total of 17 mainline entries.
How do you play Fire Emblem?
Fire Emblem’s core gameplay takes place in grid-based maps, where players must take a set amount of units (unique characters) to battle against AI-controlled units.
During battle, player units can gain experience points by performing actions such as attacking an enemy or healing an ally. If a playable unit’s HP reaches zero, they either die or retreat, depending on if permadeath is active or not.
Each unit has a specific character class (which can be upgraded and/or changed depending on the entry), stats and growths (hidden stats that determine the chance a unit has to level their stats). Units are also able to use a variety of weapons depending on their class.
Most Fire Emblem titles also include a “paper-rock-scissors"-type mechanic called Weapon Triangle. Swords beat axes, axes beat lances, and lances beat swords.
What is “permadeath”?
Permadeath or Classic Mode is a gameplay difficulty setting which allows playable characters to die when their HP reaches 0 during battle. Dead characters stay dead for the rest of the game and can no longer be accessed via the menu.
All Fire Emblem games from New Mystery of the Emblem (FE12) forward have an option called Casual Mode, which disables permanent character deaths. Instead of dying, characters retreat and return in the next chapter as if nothing had ever happened.
Mainline series games
As I mentioned previously, Fire Emblem currently consists of 17 main entries, divided on different settings or continents. Some of these games occur on the same setting, while others are completely unrelated. Here’s a list dividing the mainline entries by continent, along with some notes:
Archanea + Valentia
Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light (FE1, Japan only) and its remakes Mystery of the Emblem Book 1 (FE3, Japan only) and Shadow Dragon (FE11)
Gaiden (FE2, Japan only) and its remake Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (FE15)
Mystery of the Emblem Book 2 (FE3, Japan only) and its remake New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow (FE12)
Awakening (FE13)
FE11, FE12 and FE15 are remakes, so I’ve decided to pair them with the originals. In my opinion, there’s not much reason to play the original games over the remakes aside from personal preference or curiosity.
FE13 (Awakening) takes place 2000 years after FE3. It has some references to past titles (both from the Archanea series and from other entries), but you can play it without playing those first and still understand the story just fine.
Jugdral
Genealogy of the Holy War (FE4)
Thracia 776 (FE5)
The Jugdral series is technically in the same universe as the Archanea series, but their relation is strictly lore only and it’s not that relevant to the continuity of Fire Emblem.
FE5 is considered as one of the most difficult games of the series. Thracia 776 is a “midquel” of FE4 and, depending on who you ask, it’s either canon or exists in AU limbo due to the way some things play out, which are impossible or don’t match with FE4. Despite this, I recommend you play FE4 first.
Elibe
Binding Blade (FE6, Japan only)
Blazing Blade (FE7)
FE7 was the first game to be released outside of Japan and includes a thorough, 10 chapter long tutorial. It explains mechanics from both the GBA titles and Fire Emblem in general.
FE6 is a sequel of FE7 and much more difficult than the later, but you can play them in whichever order you’d like.
Magvel
The Sacred Stones (FE8)
FE8 is a standalone entry. It can be played at any point and it’s a nice transition from the newer games to the older ones due to it being on the easier side and its short campaign.
FE8 also includes a branching route system. The routes reunite about 3/4ths of the way through the game and, depending on which one you take, the story will change a bit. I recommend you save on a separate slot before the route split occurs in case you want to experience the route you didn’t take first after clearing the game.
Tellius
Path of Radiance (FE9)
Radiant Dawn (FE10)
The Tellius games are infamous for fetching high prices on reselling sites, so I recommend you play these by employing... shadier methods.
FE10 is a sequel of FE9 and it is recommended you play the later first to understand the whole story.
Both games include a thorough, optional tutorial which can be viewed at any moment.
NOTE: I do not recommend playing FE9 on Very Easy mode if you plan on using the FE10 data transfer option. Very Easy mode was added by the localization team into FE9, and trying to transfer data from a cleared save file played on this difficulty will crash FE10.
Fates
Fates: Birthright (FE14 or BR)
Fates: Conquest (FE14 or CQ)
Fates: Revelation (FE14 or RV)
All entries of the Fates continent are alternate paths. You can play them in any order you want, but I recommend playing Revelation last as it answers questions from both the other routes.
Birthright is the most newcomer-friendly entry of the three. Conquest was designed with experienced and strategy-focused players in mind. Revelation has a bit of both.
Fódlan
Three Houses (FE16 or TH)
TH has three separate stories, with an extra story route in one of the three main ones. They have the same first half but a different second half. Each story path follows a different main character.
Three Houses is unique in the series for having lots of in-between battle content, and is often compared to games like Persona 5 in that regard.
Elyos
Engage (FE17 or FEE)
Engage is the most recent entry to the series. It plays relatively similar to entries prior to the older FE titles and adds a bunch of new mechanics.
Engage was supposed to be a 30th anniversary game, and thus includes lots of references to the previous mainline entries. It is not required to play these first, however, and works just fine as a standalone game and/or entry point.
So, where should I start?
There are five games I consider the best starting points for series newcomers: Blazing Blade (FE7), The Sacred Stones (FE8), Path of Radiance (FE9), Awakening (FE13) and Engage (FE17).
Blazing Blade has a great tutorial, and its gameplay will give you a solid enough base that you’ll be able to pick up almost any other game in the series with relative ease. It’s also very easy to emulate.
The Sacred Stones lacks a tutorial as thorough as FE7′s, but it’s easy enough you won’t have much issue with it. FE8 allows grinding, so it’s possible to clear with whichever team you want. Additionally, Sacred Stones is, as mentioned previously, a nice game to transition from the new games to the older ones. Like FE7, it’s very easy to emulate and can be run on a potato.
Path of Radiance is another easy entry in the series and includes an in-depth tutorial. The only downside of starting with FE9 is that physical copies are extremely expensive, and that it’s not super easy to emulate (you’ll need a decent computer for it).
Awakening has been the entry point staple for quite a while now. It’s newer than the games I previously listed, includes some QOL features and tons of optional content, and lets you pair off characters. Its lower difficulties are on the easier side of the franchise, allows grinding like FE8 does, gives you lots of freedom to customize your characters, and includes Casual Mode, which can help you get used to the core gameplay features.
Engage is the newest entry of this list. Gameplay-wise, it’s more complex than the others listed here, but I still consider it one of the better entry points to the series. Like Awakening, Engage has a ton of QOL features, freedom to build characters, and includes Casual Mode. As mentioned before, Engage plays sort of similar to some of the older games. Additionally, it lets you rewind turns a total of 10 times per battle, which can be useful for transitioning from Casual to Classic mode.
Fates (specifically Birthright) and Three Houses are also good entry points to the series. I’d rank them below the ones I listed here in terms of newcomer-friendliness, but they aren’t bad starting points.
Where should I NOT start?
I advise you to not start with Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, Gaiden, Mystery of the Emblem, Genealogy of the Holy War, Thracia 776, Radiant Dawn and Fates: Revelation.
FE1-5 are not beginner friendly, so I suggest you don’t touch them until you have some experience with the series.
Radiant Dawn is, as mentioned previously, a sequel of Path of Radiance. You will understand and enjoy it more if you play FE9 first.
Revelation is meant to be played once you finish the other two Fates routes.
I finished my first FE game and want to play more! Where should I go next?
I'd personally recommend you check out one of the other newcomer-friendly titles regardless of which game you played first. Outside of those, my recommendations vary depending on which game you chose to play first.
Blazing Blade (FE7): Binding Blade (FE6) and Shadow Dragon (FE11) .
The Sacred Stones (FE8): Shadow Dragon (FE11) and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (FE15)
Path of Radiance (FE9): Radiant Dawn (FE10)
Awakening (FE13): Shadow Dragon (FE11), any of the Fates (FE14) routes and Three Houses (FE16)
Engage (FE17): any of the Fates (FE14) routes, though I’d really suggest you check the other newcomer-friendly entries first.
-------------------------------
And that’s about it! If you have further questions, concerns, corrections or suggestions, feel free to shoot an ask or add them in reblogs. Hope this was helpful!

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 15
(Masterpost)(Other Canary Content)
Warning: Spoilers for all 50 episodes!
Tumblr media
This rewatch is going to fit into a single post, because a third of the episode is just crying and yelling on a very slow boat. If you want to learn the Chinese words for “Mother” and “Father” this is your episode.
Captain Blowhard
Clan Leader Yao shows up, having barely survived the massacre of his clan, along with two disciples who aren't too excited about their unwilling promotion to top targets. Jiang Cheng tells his dad that the Wens are systematically exterminating the smaller clans, and have said anyone who helps the survivors is going to be punished.
Tumblr media
Jiang Fengmian tells Yao that the Jiang Clan will protect him. Which is why Wei Wuxian is responsible for the massacre of the Jiang Clan.
Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian both think that taking Yao to the Jin clan is the best way to keep him safe. Wei Wuxian was wrong to help the heirs of the powerfullest richest clans, but sure, let's save this asshole.
Road Tripping
Tumblr media
The boys go down to the dock to send Jiang Yanli and Jiang Fengmian off, saying a formal goodbye with a bunch of disciples and showing off how extremely good they look in these close-fitted, simply cut robes with cool belts.
Yu Ziyuan comes down to say goodbye to Yanli and give her some medicine, covering by saying it's for Jiang Fengmian, because being sick is bad for marriage prospects, probably.
Tumblr media
Later the boys will mention their hope that YZY will be mollified by the time JFM returns, which means this possibly isn't the usual state of their relationship. The dislike and jealousy seem to be constant, but perhaps being openly at war with each other is not.
(more after the cut!)
Club Ruohan
At Club Ruohan, Wen Ruohan is tired of sitting on his big uncomfortable throne so he's sitting on the floor next to it, instead. He's suffering the embarrassing problem of black smoke leakage, and needs Wen Qing to give him acupuncture to fix it, but she's not around. Wen Ruohan has an awful lot of trouble containing resentful energy, possibly because he is controlling a bunch of zombies 24x7 instead of letting them take a break. Wei Wuxian is mostly able to control it--except when he, you know, totally isn't--without ever needing an attractive acupuncturist to give him a poke.
Tumblr media
WRH learns from Wen Chao that Wei Wuxian 1. killed a boss-level monster on nightmare level difficulty without his sword 2. took whatever thing had been suppressing the nightmare monster for the previous really long time.  WRH wants whatever it is.
Boys in Charge
When the boys get back to Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng doesn't understand why they couldn't all go to the Lins together, and Wei Wuxian explains it to him. Wei Wuxian is the one seeing the big picture, and he wants to plan how to handle the Wen forces when they, inevitably, arrive.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng would rather talk big than actually plan, showing how--at this age--his anger management problem is an issue on a strategic level, not just a personal one.  As a clan leader he will eventually master this aspect, for the most part, and learn to keep a cool head in regard to martial matters, while continuing to feed his interpersonal rage problem.
The brothers supervise the archery practice of the Jiang disciples, having their last nice time together, and still without a plan. Wei Wuxian is bored and calls practice early so he can go be bored on the porch or in his room, since he isn't allowed out. In fact he's so bored by lockdown that he starts an irreverent niche blog.
Tumblr media
(he’s kidding! keep your mask on, don’t go to wine houses)
Knowing that the Wen Clan is gunning for enemy cultivators, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng send the whole group of disciples, including children, outside the compound walls to retrieve their kites. This is what happens when you don't have a plan.
Wen the Levee Breaks
Wen Chao’s girlfriend Wang Lingjiao finds a kite with a hole in it and uses it as a pretext to snatch up the youngest disciple.
The other disciples come running back and tell WWX and JC what happened. Wei Wuxian calmly gets all of the information from them and starts figuring out what to do, while Jiang Cheng freaks out.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng is a good fighter, and matures into an excellent one after a core upgrade and war experience. But Wei Wuxian is a born battle leader, developing strategies on the fly and staying cool under pressure.
Tumblr media
Madame Yu is as brave as a barrel full of bears and Yinzhu and Jinzhu chase lions down the stairs
Yu Ziyuan and the murder twins show up and all of the disciples line up behind them, relieved to have someone scary in charge.. Yu Ziyuan is also a natural leader and an awesome fighter, but her judgement is terrible, as we're about to discover.
Bitchfest
Wang Lingjiao strolls in to the main hall and has the nerve to comment on the interior decorating, because it doesn't have enough rough-hewn black rock and lava pits, apparently.
Tumblr media
She shows them all the kite and says that because it looks (kind of) like the sun, using it for target practice is an attack on the Wen Clan. Bitch, everything your clan wears and uses has fire on it and is red. The sun is not your emblem, no matter what the text says. This kite situation is presumably where the anti-Wen campaign gets its name of "Sunshot," however, which sounds pretty cool.
Wang Lingjiao moves along to her main point, which is that Wei Wuxian needs his ass kicked, and she'd like Yu Ziyuan to do the kicking. To goad her, she starts talking about the rumors about Wei Wuxian's parentage.
Let it Whip
So let it whip (let's whip it, baby) Get a grip (let's whip it baby) Well, what's your trip? (Oh no)
Tumblr media
Yu Ziyuan takes the bait, and proceeds to whip the shit out of her strongest battle asset, in a sequence that's either horrifying or completely fucking awesome, depending on how you feel about whump.
There are a lot of bad effects in this show and a lot of questionable fighting, but any time Zidian flies, I am HERE for it. I gave this beatdown its own gifset over here.
Jiang Cheng is devastated and tries again and again to protect Wei Wuxian, but his mother and her lieutenants keep moving him out of the way so the beating can continue.
Tumblr media
Yu Ziyuan hits Wei Wuxian at least 5 times, until he is totally unable to get up off the floor. Wang Lingjiao has succeeded in eliminating him as a threat for the moment.
Gotta Hand It To You
Wang Lingjiao isn't satisfied with the brutal whipping, however; she wants his right hand as a trophy, and for him to be unable to recover.  Yu Ziyuan tells Jinzhu and Yinzhu to close the doors because some blood is going to fly.
Tumblr media
I'd like to think this is when Yu Ziyuan decides to kill the Wens, rather than maiming WWX, but I'm not certain. Because she doesn't start attacking until after Wang Lingjiao says the Wens are taking Lotus Pier, and tells her to discipline Jiang Cheng. So maybe she is okay with taking WWX’s hand, but draws the line at giving up her house.
Tumblr media
Through all of this, Wei Wuxian doesn't once protest, even when he thinks they're getting ready to take his hand off. He'll do whatever it takes to make peace. THIS is the core of his heroism; he will sacrifice anything to do what he thinks is right. He's not "playing the hero;" not doing this for fame or kudos, but for a clear conscience.
It’s a Murder Party
Wang Lingjiao explains the new Wen World order, and Yu Ziyuan smacks her to the floor and then takes out all 8 of the Wen soldiers in one elegant move.
Tumblr media
Can we talk about how incredibly effective a fighter Yu Ziyuan is, without a sword? With her first-class spiritual tool as her only weapon? Nobody is telling her she needs to carry a sword. She shows she can use one, after she gives Zidian to Jiang Cheng, but she's absolutely devastating without one.
Tumblr media
Having defied Wang Lingjiao, Yu Ziyuan...doesn't kill her. She chokes her, slaps her and yells at her. Then she insults her clan and sticks her FOOT on her FACE.
Tumblr media
She sics the murder twins on the guards in the room, and they shank all of them at super speed while the boys watch with alarm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then she has them sloooowly advance on Wang Lingjiao, giving her plenty of time to holler for Wen Zhuliu before they can kill her.
Het Heat
Wen Zhuliu comes flying in, literally, kicking both murder twins across the room at the same time. This is followed by Core-Melting Hand x Violet Spider suddenly becoming the most shippable M/F couple in this thing, because wow, they have some serious chemistry.
Tumblr media
I never saw a pretty girl look so tough
Actor Feng Mingjing continues to do an awful lot with almost no lines, in his portrayal of Wen Zhuliu. WZL politely apologizes to Yu Ziyuan. Is he offering to withdraw, or is he just being polite before getting down to the killy bit? Either way, Yu Ziyuan is ready to rumble, and doesn't even consider de-escalating.
You know who was able to rein in his temper, after fighting with this same extremely dangerous dude, and therefore lived to fight another day? Fucking Nie Mingjue, that's who, who has a generational CURSE making him angry. While Yu Ziyuan, is like, "fuck the safety of my clan, this is Wei Wuxian's fault anyway" and throws down.
Tumblr media
Wen Zhuliu and Yu Ziyuan proceed to have an epic, sexy fight, where he catches her whip and she dodges his attempt to feel up her core.
Tumblr media
He's a magic man, mama, he's got the magic hands.
Wei Wuxian, still incapacitated, tells Jiang Cheng to stop Wang Lingjiao from calling for help, but JC gets distracted by the threat to his mom, and goes to engage with Wen Zhuliu.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng takes a horrifying smack in the chest, which injures him and takes him out, while Wang Lingjiao sends the signal that seals the fate of Lotus Pier.
It’s All Over Except for the Crying
Yu Ziyuan immediately sees that she's lost the battle, and has the murder twins divert Wen Zhuliu while she brings the two boys to the pier.
Tumblr media
She verifies that Jiang Cheng's core is still intact, showing the viewers, for future reference, that it's possible to tell by touch if someone's core is missing, although a casual touch won't do it.
Then she re-codes the Zidian so that it recognizes Jiang Cheng and puts it on his wrist. She follows this with a display of maternal affection for Jiang Cheng unlike anything we've seen so far, which super fails to reassure him.
Tumblr media
She follows this up with screaming at Wei Wuxian and telling him how much she hates him, and blaming him for the multiple shitty choices she just made..
Tumblr media
With a heart full of rage, she reminds him that his worth lies in what he can do for more important people.
She binds the boys with Zidian and then sends the boat on its way....
Tumblr media
...with a frickin' TALISMAN, holeee shit. As toxic as she is for Wei Wuxian, there is a direct line from her cultivation skills to his.
Dad To The  Rescue...sort of
The last third of the episode is basically yelling and crying punctuated by a couple of interactions out on the water. The extreme emotions go on for long enough that I eventually stop feeling bad for the characters and start feeling bad for the actors, who had to maintain this level of feeling for probably days of shooting.
The boys eventually meet up with Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Yanli. JFM discovers that Zidian responds to his control, which tells him something is very, very wrong, since it probably knows how his wife feels about him.
Tumblr media
This thing isn’t biting me; your mom is in serious trouble.
Here Jiang Fengmian decides to do the heroic, totally futile thing, which is exactly his style. He tosses Jiang Yanli in with the boys and takes his leave so he can go die with his wife while the children survive.
Tumblr media
He has to know that Yu Ziyuan is the stronger fighter of the two of them, and that he's not going back to rescue her. He's just going to stand with her and die together, which is the most romantic thing you can do in a C-drama, after all.
How Much Do You Owe the Jiang Clan?
Jiang Fengmian tells his two children not to cry, making them and the viewer cry extra hard. (specially ouchy gifset here).
Tumblr media
Then he turns to Wei Wuxian and, with a heart full of tenderness, reminds him that his worth lies in what he can do for more important people.
Next episode: Is going to be even more horrible!
Soundtrack: 1. When The Levee Breaks, Led Zeppelin 2. The Tale of Custard the Dragon (poem) by Ogden Nash 3. Let it Whip by the Dazz Band 4. U Got the Look by Prince & Sheena Easton 5. Magic Man by Heart

Faye's Fòdlan Journey: Season 1 - Opening Thoughts
Tumblr media
Introduction
Masterpost Next->
As a reminder, we're starting with Azure Moon first, followed by Verdant Wind, Crimson Flower and lastly Silver Snow.
This was a route order I decided when I asked around for advice on which order to play them (mainly if there was an intended route order like in Fates) and they basically told me "play Azure Moon first, don't play Verdant Wind and Silver Snow next to each other since they're incredibly similar" and something else that made me decide to place Crimson Flower in the third slot. We'll see how well it turns out.
Before starting, I want to make a small note on my past experiences with Fòdlan.
I was there when Three Houses was first announced and I watched all the trailers as well as some Youtubers breaking them down.
But once it got released, I decided to go on hiding to avoid spoilers, which among other things meant unsubscribing to the very bad, not good r/fireemblem subreddit. One thing led to another, I eventually realized Reddit did me more harm than good because at that point I logged in there deliberately to get angry, so I decided to delete it.
Which means, in a way, I have to thank Three Houses to get me out of there, years before Reddit crashed and burned on top of that.
The following years were spent dodging most (but not all, sadly) spoilers, witnessing third-hand reports of flame wars with morbid curiosity (basically it's as if there was a huge wildfire outside and I was in my garden ignoring it while grilling) and being increasingly annoyed that almost every new content felt like it was about Fòdlan. At least before Engage was announced.
So I my feelings coming onto this game are a mix of awe, curiosity, fear and annoyance. I wonder if that makes sense.
Speaking of annoyances, I have to talk about a small pet peeve I have with the cover art.
Tumblr media
While I definitely wouldn't call it bad, something about it felt off to me from the moment they revealed it.
It's clear what they were going for, with the house leaders dividing the art into three spaces, but the end results ends up looking a bit goofy, especially with the infamous upside-down Claude (which became a meme from the very beginning) and the Byleths just slapped onto the background of a building even if it doesn't make much sense.
But this is mainly a subjective thing. What isn't subjective, though, is the art error where Claude's bow is misaligned. If you look closely at the center, you'll notice the end of the bow isn't actually ligned up with the rest of it, and now you won't be able to unsee it, bothering you as much as it bothers me. You're welcome, by the way.
Tumblr media
But we've delayed the main event for long enough. Let's start the game, shall we?
Tumblr media
The first thing you see when starting the game is an empty throne on the left, followed by a quiet rendition on the organ of the Fire Emblem theme. Already it's starting to become clear the tone this game is going for.
Waiting around a bit, the opening of the game starts playing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all- wow, that theme. Edge of Dawn is one of the best vocal tracks of Fire Emblem by far. I remember listening to it on loop when it first got released!
Also I gotta say, I missed the anime-style cutscenes.
While I like the 3D ones these give the game plenty of charm, even if I wish they were a bit more fluid. Honestly, they make a solid argument for a Fire Emblem anime to be released. no the cancelled OVA doesn't count shut up
If this is anything like Echoes, this opening is made of spliced-up future cutscenes. And given a good portion of it shows up again in the intro cutscene, I'd say I'm right.
Returning to the game, we start creating our file and- ooh, boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ignoring the difficulty options for a second, which are the same as every modern Fire Emblem save for Echoes (only difference being that "Lunatic" is now named "Maddening"), it's time for my first big criticism of this game.
Which is ironic, given that it's about all of the text being too. Freaking. ˢᵐᵃˡˡ.
Maybe it's just an impression I have, but back when Three Houses first released, it felt like every AAA company was in a competition to put the tiniest text possible due to the larger screens, with the result that most of the time you have trouble reading it unless you get closer.
This is a huge blunder on accessibility for people with visibility problems, and while it luckily got better especially now that accessibility is a larger focus for most mainstream developers (except, of course, Nintendo), here it still shows its tiny, hugly head.
And remember, the Switch is also a portable console, so there are people who had to read this tiny font on a small screen, so I'd say this is pretty bad. I doubt I'll play Three Houses on portable because of this.
In fact, I feel this is such a problem I will be including alt text on all the screens with dialogue.
Going back to the difficulty options, I will be playing on Normal Classic.
Normal because I'm an impatient scrub, Classic because I like having some form of consequences. Besides, I have Divine Pulse covering my ass.
Hey, I said I was a long-time Fire Emblem player, I never said I was good at it.
With that said, the screen fades to black, and the first proper cutscene begins.
Tumblr media
We open on a large, rainy battlefield, in what I assume is the distant past.
Two armies clash against each other, until a human(?) named Nemesis descends from the skies in a burst of flame. Immediately he turns his attention towards his foe, the goddess Seiros.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two soon begin a duel to the death. Seiros uses a sword and shield which couple with her general design makes me think she might be slightly inspired from Greek culture? Big if true, because from what I know Fire Emblem never took inspiration from Greece.
Nemesis, meanwhile, fights with... the Sword of the Creator?
Tumblr media
Huh. Will need to keep a closer eye on that one.
Eventually, Seiros prevails, and in a fit of rage, stabs Nemesis to death over and over, yelling that he took everything she loved.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After felling her *heh* Nemesis, Seiros grabs the Sword of the Creator, lovingly caressing it calling her Mother.
Tumblr media
We see the Divine Pulse activate, and all of a sudden we're brought at Best Goddess Sothis' Mind Space, where she notices her new visitor.
Tumblr media
So. This intro.
Besides already setting the tone Fòdlan is going for (grand with a lot of death and tragedy and murder), it's interesting how if you're at least a bit savvy with how Fire Emblem stories go, you can already put two and two together with that's happening.
Granted, future games and loose spoilers are kind of helping me, but still. Let me explain.
First of all, Seiros is a goddess. If it wasn't clear from the fact there's a Church named literally after her. And given what most goddesses are in Fire Emblem are and her particular shade of green hair (the same Naga and Tiki and also Mila share), it's clear she's Fòdlan's equivalent of Divine Dragons.
Nemesis, meanwhile, is using a sword made of bones, which are what all of Fòdlan's legendary weapons are made of. And given they are all effective against dragons as Heroes and Engage show...
Well, it doesn't take a genius to realize where those bones come from.
Remember, Falchion is made from a dragon's bone too.
And given what Seiros says, it's likely Nemesis or someone else affiliated with him murdered all of Seiros' loved ones to make legendary weapons of unfathomable power out of them.
The Sword of the Creator seems to be made out of the bones of her mother, on top. No wonder she's pissed.
I am curious about the Divine Pulse transition. Is it just cosmetic to signify a fast-forward, or is there some time fuckery already going on? I guess there's only a way to find out.
Tumblr media
Sothis greets us in her own, sassy way, prompting the Avatar creation screen.
And lo and behold, we went from Awakening and Fates' somewhat limited but still extensive customization options to... Just getting to choose the Avatar's gender.
Tumblr media
*sigh* Listen. I went on a tangent about this multiple times, so I'll just keep it brief and say that given how restrictive Fire Emblem's dialogue options are, if you're not going to make the Avatar at least visually properly customizable then there's no reason to have an Avatar and all.
Okay. With that tangent aside, let's talk about Byleth's designs.
Male Byleth is my favorite. The outfit looks good and practical for a mercenary, I'm a big fan of the loose sleeves of his jacket (?) and his face looks neutral but serious.
Meanwhile, Female Byleth... well.
Tumblr media
I'm sure I'm far from the only one who mentioned this, but between the random holes in her armor just to show more bare skin, her strangely ornate thights and her somewhat younger face with larger eyes... Yeah, it's clear what the designers' priorities were for her.
Also her expression makes her look like a doll. A doll having flashbacks.
Tumblr media
I like her hair more, though. So that's that at least.
As a reminder, male Byleth will be used for the first two routes while female Byleth for the last two. But regardless, I will be talking about Byleth in a gender neutral way, safe for cases where I mention a specific gender. Because again, besides romance options, the Avatar's gender really Does Not Matter.
Tumblr media
Here we have the first dialogue option, something this game loves to use. I guess it's why Byleth's a silent protagonist, although I doubt it will be worth it.
As a general rule of thumb I like to immerse myself in who I'm playing as, so I will be picking the dialogue options I think Byleth would choose, which will be the highlighted ones in the screenshots.
I know Byleth is nicknamed the Ashen Demon but I don't know how they feel about that moniker yet, so I choose to have them call themselves a mortal.
Sothis then asks Byleth for their name, which for every route will be... Well, Byleth. Not that it's ever said out loud anyway.
Lastly, she asks them about their birthday.
Tumblr media
It's interesting to note how here, instead of using our real life Calendar, every month has its Fòdlan counterpart. While this is really neat, I hope they will keep the number along with it because I know I will forget about them otherwise.
Tumblr media
And I share their day of birth as well! What a peculiar coincidence!
With a last phrase that feels like it's leaning on the fourth wall, Sothis bids Byleth farewell for now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
donotmakeaSkyrimjokedonotmakeaSkyrimjokeDONOTMAKEASKYRIMJOKE
Tumblr media
Byleth's father and soon-to-be corpse, Jeralt, wakes Byleth from their strange dream.
Apparently, Byleth dreamt about Sothis multiple times, but this is apparently the first time she actually noticed them.
Guess she was asleep for the other nights, that must have been pretty awkward for them. I hope she doesn't snore at least.
The father-and-child duo prepars for another mercenary mission, when they're approached by three inconspicious teenagers who definitely haven't set the Internet on fire for years to come, asking for help.
Tumblr media
The problem is of course, bandits. The universal evil of all of Fire Emblem. With a whole group of them on their tail and about to attack a village, the five prepare their counterattack.
Which we will see next time, since this post is getting incredibly long and more importantly, I've hit the image cap!

Faye's Fòdlan Journal: Introduction
I am not quite sure how to start this, so let me just start by explaining who I am and what this project I've been considering for years is about. First and foremost: Hello, I'm Faye. I'm a longtime Fire Emblem fan who played most of the series, from the Kaga and classic era to the modern ones, which are those I tend to like more. My favorite Fire Emblem titles are Echoes and Engage, to give you an idea of my tastes.
This will be a liveblog of my (mostly) blind playthrough of Fire Emblem Three Houses. Except that, compared to most liveblogs, this will be a deep dive, with me writing down all of my thoughts and generally attempting to view the game with a more critical eye compared to how I usually play games, Fire Emblem especially. So I suppose this makes it more like an old-school text-based Let's Play than a liveblog, but oh well.
So basically, this whole thing is a personal excercise in critical thinking.
If you're wondering why Three Houses specifically, it's because it's the only mainline Fire Emblem game I know very little about, and because this game is huge and... divisive, to say the least.
But if you're worried this is going to view "critical thinking" as an excuse to nitpick and shit on the game as a whole, don't. I hate six-hour videos on why your favorite media is objectively bad as much as you, and I've always been of the idea that Fire Emblem never had a truly bad game. So at worst, I'm expecting a heavily flawed game with still plenty of things to enjoy, even if they might not be to my taste.
The liveblog will be divided into "seasons" for each route, to make it more digestible for both of us, because I know I am going to burn out harder than Sigurd if I try to play the whole game at once. Hopefully I can release a chapter once a week but, no promises. As you can see in the masterpost, the order will be Blue Lions -> Golden Deer -> Black Eagles -> Silver Snow.
I will refer to Byleth in a gender neutral way, unless there's a specific example I suspect is gender-sensitive. Mainly because I'm a firm believer that the Avatar's gender really, really does not matter.
Last but not least, I know the Fòdlan fanbase can be... enthusiastic to say the least, so all I am asking is please be civil. Also no spoilers, please. If you act rude or spoil me something I will block you.
That sour note aside, I hope you enjoy this long, slow journey through Fòdlan with me!
