i watched fma, and but then i think i only watched an episode or two of full metal alchemist brotherhood before seeing that it was unfinished and decided to return to the series after it'd been completed. *checks watch* it's been 12 years im sure they're done by now

#all this to say i've stared watching fmab on hulu #i remember all this vaugely. i know i hated the movie they released #web.log #i can already tell the humor i thought was great when i was 13 is not going to slide well now

Nosey makes a sympathetic noise. “Your poor mother. Shouldn't have married a bluecoat— no offense to you, McDougal— There would've been good men back home, she really shouldn't have left Ishval for a—”

“No,” she says, putting their things in the chest, there isn't much anyways and a little dust won't kill them. They'll deal. “My mother was Amestrian.”

She doesn't turn around to see it, but she can practically feel Nosey's eyes going wide. “Then your pa, he was—”

“He wanted to change Amestris.” There's a stone where her heart ought to be, she thinks. An admirable dream, some would say. But to her it never was within grasp. Even the her of many years ago, a wide-eyed kid with a hopeful heart, even she knew it was a stupid dream.

Change? By being upstanding citizens? Take all the abuse, all the ridicule, stand and take it all, never raise a hand, even to protect themselves? She remembers rulers on her knuckles, of cruel laughter, of vandalized desks, of hungry nights and cold dark rooms, all the injustice in her little life.

Change won't come to good little citizens, it just won't. They'll have to seize it by the throat and drag it to where they need.

He stayed with the military even to the bitter end, until he was taken away— presumably to be executed or imprisoned for life.

Some part of her dimly wonders if he was turned into a Philosopher's Stone, too. Like those other Ishvalans. Like the rebels who refused to keep fighting for Amestris.

She's broken out of her thoughts when they hear a loud thud. There's someone hollering from another room— and Nosey curses under his breath as he hurries that way. Fucking clumsy dolts.]

been watching a playthru of paranormasight and its VERY good. cool art style, cool characters (my GOD the girls and women of this game are SO good and NONE are over-sexualized at all!!!! a rarity in that genre of game!!!) VERY cool story and mechanics. 10/10 would recommend buying if you like horror/mystery visual novels (altho if youre sensitive def check out a trigger warning list first, but if not, 10000% recommend going in as blind as possible like I did) just. Awesome Game 👍 kind of blown away by it!!!

my controversial opinion is that the soul eater anime-original ending wasnt bad at all. i think it was a perfectly fine ending that tied together all the themes the story was building up in a nice bow, and gave a reasonable conclusion. was it perfect? no, there was for sure much more to be explored, and the weapon maka thing was a little contrived to me, but also... idk maybe the fact that it wasnt this crazy powerful shounen ending, and instead was just one girl proclaiming her courage with a single punch... just didnt have enough flare for typical shounen fans. but i think that was also the point and that it went over a lot of ppls heads. and tbf fmab had a similar conclusion w how it beat its antagonist, and no one complains abt that one! (tho i think the real power in its ending is ed's choice and why it was the "right answer" etc etc so it pulls it off better, this post isnt abt that tho). i think the soul eater ending was perfectly serviceable, the average shounen watcher just doesnt appreciate the themes if they dont end with fucking insane powerscaling, which is the only way to ever end an action show. and the idea that it was the Worst Ending Ever became so pervasive bc of this that ppl started to believe it, just bc it was echoed so much. but its literally fine. the ending is just... fine. it works. its fine. its not the best ending in the world, but it works literally just fine. we're not 13 anymore we can admit the soul eater anime ending was fine

so back in january @waitineedaname did the incredible public service of cataloguing the majority of fma characters by appearances in fmab per episode. and its only with the help of their data that i was able to make this graph

it contrasts episode count by the amount of fanfiction tagged with their name*. theres a break in the y-axis because the ed, al, mustang, hawkeye and winry tags were so much more prolific, so note the change in scale. also note that the x-axis goes from right to left.

theres only a very weak positive correlation between the two factors.

ive gone into the enormous gap between ed and al in the past but reminder that not only is eds count over double als, but only 8% of fics tagged with alphonse elric on ao3 do not also include ed.

havoc and hughes are the biggest outliers outside the "main 5", with envy as a close third place.

ling also boasts a considerable score for his middling episode count but given the central role he takes in what episodes he appears in, i feel like a more minute-count-based analysis would put him more on track with the average, however if i ever decide to sit down and time every fma character by Minutes Onscreen please shoot me

chris mustang has more fic to her name than wrath, pride or even father himself despite being in 10 or more times fewer the episodes, which i would normally congratulate her for but suspect she achieved via nepotism.

greed is on top of the remainder of the cast but he has not left the main cloud out of solidarity with the proletariat.

the worst number of episodes you can be in is 13-16 i guess.

*both ao3 and ff.net were counted towards the total. given how ff.net only counts fics to the closest hundred or thousand after a point, theres a significant margin of error there, but i dont think it really affects the data because "theyre popular enough to reach that amount" is all we need to know.

tag ambiguity re: sloth, wrath and pride on ff.net meant i had to go through and sift out the 03-original characters manually and there may also be a slight margin of error there because of that. aside from those instances i did not discriminate between 03- and manga/brotherhood-based fics. it would be interesting to see a similar graph in regards to 03 episode count.

If anyone's curious, this is my overly specific Dungeon Meshi AMV idea. Spoilers ahead, this idea hinges on me having read the manga and supplemental materials.

The basis of this idea is Marcille. Specifically, her age. It's been canonically stated that she's 50 years old, and that -- in plain numbers -- this equates to her being about 5 years old compared to a human lifespan. However, it's also been shown that at age 13, Marcille was the size of and dressed like a 2-4 year old and was still drinking juice out of a sippy cup. I'd guess that this means age 50 is further from age 5, developmentally, and closer to early or mid teens. Early 20's at oldest.

This still means that Marcille is the youngest of the group (aside from Izutsumi), but it also means that she's a literal 13-18 year old kid. Which is a fact that can be analyzed for days -- how it influences Marcille's choices in canon, how it affects her relationships with other characters, how we view those choices and relationships through the lens of creatures with an 80-100 year maximum lifespan ourselves, etc -- but it also lends really well to a trend from when I, myself, was a teenager.

I can't make AMVs myself. I didn't have that skill then, I don't have it now. But I still think it would be hilarious if a Marcille "I'm Just a Kid" AMV existed. The irony of that song and the associations with isolation and lack of autonomy and the pressures of vying for justice and fairness in a world that thinks you shouldn't yet know the meaning of the word playing over a slideshow of her more impulsive/childish "I have made things significantly worse for everyone" decisions and highlighting how she's just a kid in the "doesn't know the consequences of her actions and doesn't care because she hasn't had the life experiences to examine things outside herself" way would be really fun right up until near the end when it shows some of her actual emotional reasoning and speeches and reminds the viewer that all the associations of the song do in fact apply to her and her story arc.

I distinctly remember at least 3 anime series with kids as protagonists/major characters that got the "I'm Just a Kid" AMV treatment. It was usually angst, sometimes comedy, always compelling. The one for Toboe from Wolf's Rain left a significant mental mark, and the ones I saw for Ed and Al from FMA/FMAB made a lot of sense, for example.

It would be funny and poignant and perfectly Marcille and I'm slightly frustrated that I can't make it exist. I don't even know where I'd start -- or who I'd ask to make it for me.
