Note
Do you have any particular favorite episodes of the Fred Allen show?
Okay I got most of my way through answering this a few minutes after it arrived this morning but then I had to go out so
Any episode w Jack, obvs, but a few off the top of my head:
The one-two punch of 19 and 26 May 1946- Phil Harris followed by King For a Day
I can't remember if it was Jack's or Fred's show, but the fight of the century was fun ofc
If nothing else, for historical value there's the 30 Dec 1936 show w Stuart Canin where Fred makes the crack about Jack's playing that started the whole thing (only the east coast broadcast survives so it's not exactly what Jack heard, but it gives you an idea. It's not the easiest one to find but it is out there.)
And a few others:
Both the Orson Welles eps are fun (they do basically the same sketch both times but in 1940 it's w jokes about Orson being a prodigy and his ego, in 1946 it's rebuilding his personality after he develops an inferiority complex)
20 March 1940 where an eagle (who's guesting) gets loose
A couple of Take It or Leave It-themed shows- 6 Jan 1946, where Fred goes on it to pay back a cab driver w the winnings, and one I can't remember the date of where Phil Baker crashes Fred's show to claim back the 15 minutes he says he's owed from Fred running over and starts Take It or Leave It right then and there
2 May 1948 w Henry Morgan (actually any ep w Henry is likely to be good)
And try and avoid the AFRS rebroadcasts if you can bc they tend to cut bits out for time so sometimes you lose punchlines

Peter Lorre in "The Killers" | Texaco Star Theater, 1944
"Why do people think I'm such a monster? I'm just a lovable little guy, trying to get a head."
youtube
It's very nice to hear Peter's voice and his fey little laugh, but be aware that not all of the jokes aged well in this episode of the Texaco Star Theater with host Fred Allen, June 4, 1944.
