You know, regarding Lloyd's achievement in history and whether ordinary citizens know him or not made me crave post canon modern au.
Imagine seeing an in universe fanfic authors notes in ao3 or twitter crying about how they simply wanted to write a story set in Lloys time but they just keep diving into rabbit holes.
Kinda like
"So i was writing an historical au set in Alician era where the MC had a detour in Cremo and he was admiring a statue by the sea with a local explaining its history. Of course, I needed to do some research only to found out that Lloyd Frontera, YES, THAT Lloyd Frontera who made the Pantara railroad defeated some sea monster, nearly died and got statue for it"
Maybe someone from Beneto Kingdom being so confused because all he learned from history in school (Beneto history) is that Lloyd is just some brilliant engineer so he got specially confused on why in the movie he was watching set in Alician era is Lloyd fighting a goddamn bone dragon.
I'm interested on how scholars and political figures bemoan and analyse Lloyd's action and achievement but ordinary people's Internet discourse could be so much fun as well.
Javier and Lloyd getting the Alexander and Haphaestion treatment on whether they were lovers or not. The discourse would be so toxic lol.
oh my god forget changing the history of civil engineering forever, sparking the nastiest discourse ever on history/fandom internet forums is lloyd's true greatest achievement akshfksdg
he's the go to historical domain character used to set the time period for a historical movie/book/series. he's the guy writers insert to give their work a more period accurate vibe. everyone knows just enough about him to make really passionate history nerds very angry about all the inaccuracies and made up facts that are taken as common knowledge.
i'm thinking people of completely different online circles all knowing about lloyd in some capacity but regarding completely separate facets of his life and work and being so surprised when they accidentally find yet another whole field lloyd revolutionized. like.
a sword nerd who's really into the concept of the asrahan core technique and knows perfectly well that lloyd helped invent it getting gobsmacked about the fact that's the same guy that laid the ground for modern sewer systems.
a fan of historical romance stories who is used to seeing lloyd as a fun cameo in the background of stories set in the alician period being really confused when they open their book on thermodynamics and see there's a whole chapter dedicated to a method lloyd figured out to create ice without the need of magic.
a train enthusiast who is really fascinated by the rudimentary switchback system lloyd frontera implemented when the concept of a train wasn't even known in the empire being completely dumbfounded when their friends invite them to see a movie about that one time lloyd frontera and his knight defeated a knight of hell in namaran.
i think it's definitely a meme to post "so i was doing research for my asfahan au and went on a rabbit hole and guess who fucking built the qanat that's widely regarded as the only reason the kingdom didn't fall into civil war. take a wild fucking guess" "was it lloyd frontera" "IT WAS FUCKING LLOYD FRONTERA OF COURSE IT WAS"
i'm also certain there would be some guys who think he's overrated and people should really stop talking so much about him when there's so many other historical figures who are just as interesting and not as recognized 🙄. to which people immediately go "mad cause your history blorbo didn't defeat a bone dragon aren't you" at them
Javier and Lloyd getting the Alexander and Haphaestion treatment on whether they were lovers or not. The discourse would be so toxic lol.
they definitely get the alexander and hephaestion treatment you are so correct. they're also the achilles and patroclus of the modern magentano girlies. there's a bunch of 'queer retellings' of their lives. they're the go to example for homoerotic friendships. there's a bunch of edits that mix historical paintings of them with ship fanart with that 'history hates lovers' song playing over them. dudebros get really angry about it. llojavi truthers pull out their 20 pages long annotations that start with "they fucking slept in the same bedroom for years" and it only gets worse.
there's one poor person online who just really fucking wants to know how and why lloyd frontera changed faces one day out of the blue with no one ever explaining it. there's no official records. no member of the royal family ever made a statement about it. why is everyone acting like the frontera family didn't have one eldest son for 25-29 years and one day suddenly had a completely different one. what the fuck is going on.
so. yeah. i'm a little obsessed with this concept actually ajkshdksa

Somethin' kind of interesting about Mikoto is that she's this evil gal who is like. Well. I mean, she's trying to end the world, right.
But you see stuff like this and then you look at her quote video,
youtube
and like, you start to realize that this is just her way of wanting to stop pain and suffering.
One thing about Magia Record is that it doesn't have straight up evil characters (well playable characters). Everyone is redeemable. Everyone can become a friend.
This can be frustrating sometimes. Promised Blood lead to deaths in Kamihama. Himena tried to commit fascist genocide. Oriko tried to kill Mitama (and totally killed a bunch of people through Kirika before her respective event). Alina is Alina. Like, some of these girls committed heinous things, but at the end, everyone is saved, redeemed, and made into friends.
I think additionally, one can argue that it's out of capitalist desire to do this, not necessarily out of a desire for good writing. You want your girls to have some likable traits, right? Otherwise who the hell would roll for them? You want your precious blorbo to have enough good qualities that people aren't just completely turned off on the concept of them. There are people on tumblr who believe that Alina fucking Gray was in the right the whole time; this is strategic shit on their part. Even if you don't give them enough good to outweigh the bad, you want to give the girl the best kind of ending possible for her (yes even for the girls who died).
That means Alina isn't going to get killed and forgotten about, it means that Himena gets saved before turning into a witch, it means that Yuna doesn't ultimately give into her hatred and become a kimochi monster, it means at the very last moment Oriko won't go through with killing Mitama. Everyone stops just short of crossing that event horizon of punishment and retribution for their actions.
But to be honest, I also kind of like it about Magia Record too, even if can feel "weak" writing-wise. I feel like there is a message behind the story-- that all of these magical girls have a shared suffering, a shared trauma, that only they have ever experienced, and that's why they need to work together. Even if some of them have done horrible things. Because truthfully, the worst thing done was done to them by the society they live (aka Kyubey). Their sacrifices are used to power change that benefits the universe at their expense.
I think one can easily use this as a metaphor for real life issues regarding marginalized people. Magical girls perform invisible labor that doesn't get acknowledged outside of their community as part of the inherent system. I think it's pretty easy to relate this to women as a whole for large parts of history. One reason that men historically have been able to accomplish so much is because their wives were helping them in the background-- either in assisting in the actual research or "simply" by taking over all the household labor and tasks, freeing up their husbands' time to study the universe or whatever. But I don't think you can "just" relate this to women's issues; I think it can definitely be argued that it can relate to a bunch of other marginalized groups.
And with that in mind, I kind of like that all of these girls are able to get along. Every single one shares this one piece of trauma. There are many different ways that trauma can look like-- sometimes it's knowing that you sold your soul for a wish you didn't really want. Sometimes it's knowing that you have to fight for the rest of your life. It might be knowing that your fate is to become a witch. It might result in loneliness. It might result in fights amongst your fellow magical girl peers, because there aren't enough resources to go around. It might be from watching your friends die and become a witch, aka magical girl food.
The really evil characters who are always presented as such are non-magical girls. Yeah, that's again because you want your playable characters to be likeable and sellable-- but it's also fascinating in it's own right. Mikoshiba gets almost no kind displays on her part. One could argue that it's a poor writing attempt to make a villain. One could also argue that she's perpetuating the system and trauma that these girls face and using it for her own advantage, with no regard for the tools she's set up to sacrifice. Acting out and trying to fight back isn't irredeemable. Knowing better and taking advantage of these girls is.
Then we come back to Mikoto, and why I think she's actually compelling, even if she's probably the most "evil" playable character. This girl has suffered a hell of a lot-- in addition to her own horrible homelife and schoollife, she becomes a witch and then a parasite-- but that parasitedom is really just another way to hammer in her suffering. She can't affect the world while she's in Hanna's head, she can only tell Hanna what to do and hope that Hanna follows it-- and sometimes Hanna does. Sometimes she doesn't. And then you have Mikoto seeing all of the various bad ends that magical girls get when they turn into witches. Doom, despair, suffering, and failure are burnt into her psyche. And when Hanna dies, it must feel like Mikoto really doesn't have anything at all, but a cruel universe that toys with her and shows her nice things, only to take them away. The world and all its beauty feels like its a mockery of what she can't have for herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With that in mind... yeah Mikoto is like, not a great person or anything, but we see how her problems stem from society's treatment/neglect towards her. It's like the game is saying, "by not protecting our most vulnerable, we make monsters. And that's our wrong, not theirs."
IDK. Maybe I'm really overthinking it? Very possible. But I like that the game points to some of these poor girls and says that they need help, not condemnation. They need understanding, love, and friendship. They need hope. The world can be an unkind place, but it can also be a beautiful one, and they deserve to feel that beauty and love too.
Anyways thanks for listening to my long rambling rant.

Ive had an idea for a fantasy/medieval fic, an epiphany if you will. (Forgive me if this is inaccurate from a historical standpoint; I was eepy and refused to do any research before getting 8 hours of sleep)
What if, in a kingdom of knights and peasants and royalty, there lived a feared (but kind and generous) king? A king who has leveled battlefields, mended relations between allies, and whose kingdom is so prosperous that all commonfolk live comfortably. Many have sought to wed the king. Suitors from various other kingdoms travel to a grand palace to only be met with of what looks to be several royal adivsers and... a jester?
Many suitors are in disbelief when said jester clad in a oversized jangly hat, checkered bodysuit, and a variety of barely-concealed pointy weapons, politely and very happily says, "No." Many nobles and knights are too stunned, but the rest like to voice their opinions in a way that isnt very pleasant..... just jangly blorbo that's courting the king and has to deal with unworthy suitors getting in the way.

can I get BTS for any part of A Beautiful Poison?
A Beautiful Poison on AO3:
Writing this story was a personal catharsis for me. I pretty much exorcised my COVID19 demons into it.
The pandemic was a window into both the brightest and darkest aspects of human nature. As it wound down, I struggled to process all that. And what better way to work through Stuff than to mold it into a fanfic starring one's favorite blorbo?
Elrond is the light: altruism, kindness and persistence in the face of despair. The courage to do what needs to be done, even if that thing is hard, exhausting or unpopular. Valor without renown, and all that.
Tarlanc, his foil, falls to the siren song of a simple cure, an easy way out that will save nothing and no one but himself, and not even that.
I've never done as much historical research for any fic as I did for ABP. That, too, was therapeutic. Reading about historical plagues and the people who lived through them made me feel less alone. Humanity has gone through this before, and then, as now, we were being humans at our very best and very worst.
I cried over the quote from the 14th century Italian chronicler at the end of chapter 1 because his description of the horrors of he Black Death exactly matched my fear at the peak of the pandemic: what happens when there are too many bodies to fit inside the morgue?
Turns out that in the 21st century you can simply rent a mobile one, and so there was no tossing in rivers or dogs dragging bits through the streets. Even so, the best fictional horror is just this side of real, and the opening chapter was born. I'm still proud of how vivid and effectively terrifying it turned out.
Ancient alchemy, too, was a strange comfort. Orpiment and mercury and the Golden elixir, ... People of all times have believed in wacky and toxic cure-alls. Hydroxychloroquine, horse dewormer, and Facebook knows what else are just another iteration. There truly is nothing new underneath the sun. Somehow, that's a relief.
And then came the final fight, and I decided to just write an opulent horror scene and have some pure, self-indulgent fun. Elrond and Tarlanc duking it out in a pool of blood and poison, smashing the room to bits was pure stress relief, and a joy to write. (I'm aware that this sounds weird, said about a mutilation scene, but writing is a craft and I took a craftsperson's joy in trying to do it well)
Even a couple of years later I'm still proud of A Beautiful Poison. I think it's among the best things I've ever written and I'm always tickled pink when people mention it, so thanks for asking!

OP's blorbos round 1 poll 13: Heidi Hammel from the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) vs Renfield from Renfield (2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Details under cut:
Heidi Hammel:
Historical blorbo from my childhood, so maybe slightly less weird at this point but. First off, she is a REAL, LIVING PERSON. She's just doing her career! But one of the first books I owned outright as a wee babby op was a biography of her, and I'm pretty sure my parents still have all the heidi hammel fanart I made in like, first grade.
Renfield:
He is the most pathetic creature to ever exist on earth. He's the scrunkly. He's my world. He's an accessory to 90 years of murder and has little baby fangies from sharing in the power of Dracula. His arc is about getting out of an abusive relationship and his first act after that is to paint his apartment bright green, orange and pink. He has bedsheets with little orange kitty cats. I love and adore him and I want to nurture him despite his being like a hundred and something. He gets superhuman strength from eating bugs and uses it to do violence. 1000/10.

Now that I've had a few days to recover from what i just did to myself i can proudly announce- on a new blog because I don't want my main blogs being associated with this project because one of my lives greatest achievements really probably dosen't belong my incoherent screamings into the void.
On that note. I beat this freaking nanowrimo thing in like six days. no I did not mean to. a friend was coming to visit by the seventh and i PANICED on the last three days. I was already overdoing it, but the last three days were a freaking doozy.
Tumblr media
Image description: a terrible little graph showing a brief upwards slide, then a little cha cha slide to the right as it evens out briefly, which depicted my first 4 days of nanowrimo, followed violently by an uppercutting-punch to the face line that has a little pop up window under it saying i reached 50,018 words by november the sixth.
So heres a fun little question and answers session made up of the questions I thought were most suited to this acheivement.
are you okay? my hand briefly went numb. Somehow I was under the impression a fifteen minute walk was all I needed to do to fix that- it wasen't. i kept writing anyways. I think i've mostly recovered now- but to answer your question I am undefeatable and also i slept for ten hours afterwards so I think I'm basically done recovering
what is the plot A victorian professor lady, a ghost with emotional issues, and a college age whole entire freaking lady who just got adopted against her will by this professor try to solve the mystery of why the ghost guy cant move on and how he died
what was the most hours you wrote during this
12
4. did you take a brea-
no. no i did not take a break.
and while obviously i'm not the fastest person to have ever beaten this challenge i'm feeling pretty good right now. : ) i've always wanted to be able to write novels really fast and that's been the biggest thing standing between me and writing *more* novels. you know?
and yes the specific 'part' of the victorian era I chose is in fact, none of them. that was intentional. theres a lot of great things in the victorian era and this isint even a one to one copy of it. theres no specific town this takes place in, theres no specific time period this takes place in. just vaugely 'victorian era' so I could shove all the ten thousand things i've researched into one little area. its probably not even really earth. so like, good disclaimer to put there. don't go into this expecting great historical accuracy. though most is based on some sort of thing i learned about this fabulous era of history (yes im aware of the horrors too, It's not as if I want to live in lead face paint land and eat little arsenic wafers for my complexion or something- I don't need to be reminded that humanity did not briefly free itself from all the evils of this world so that humanity could drink tea and say things like 'tussie-mussie' and wear hat pins- I just think the victorian era is neat)
so yes I'm very proud of myself rn and hope to blog about my blorbos here to keep myself wanting to edit this thing.
speaking of which. This thing i've done to myself is called Tussie-Mussie.

What’s your favourite AU setting to write?
Ok I love modern AUs but with a twist and fantasy AUs. Historical ones are fun but the level of research can be draining.
With the modern AUs, I’ve done some fun ones and have some ideas. I did my horror based AU for Star Wars which was a fuckin BLAST to write. I’m currently debating starting some new ones with my latest blorbo and OC including:
1.) they work at a dive bar (inspired by my favorite bar in the town where I live) and have to deal with the nightly shenanigans of the staff and patrons
2.) Eddie is a famous musician with his band Corroded Coffin and Layla is a sex worked on OnlyFans. They are mutual fans of each other who end up meeting because he contracts her to do modeling for their album covers. They become friends and it progresses from there

2022 Pokémon Holiday Exchange Letter
Dear Writer,
Thank you so much for writing for me! This is my first Pokemon exchange, so I’m super excited!
I’ll also drop a link to the exchange AO3 page for people who follow me: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/pokexchange_2022/profile
I’m not the best at preambles, so I’ll just jump into likes/dnws below the cut:
Likes: Horror, unreliable narrators, AUs with interesting concepts, worldbuilding, aged up characters, time travel and timeline shenanigans, mystery, bureaucracy, espionage, interpersonal drama and toxicity, characters making bad decisions, repression, pining, classic fanfiction tropes.
I prefer names from the English dub; while I sort of interpret Kanto as being a sort of fantasy [region of] Japan, I grew up on the dub and I’m used to the dub names.
DNWs: Explicit sex, pokemon getting maimed/killed (peril is fine as long as they pull through in the end), downer endings, pregnancy, omegaverse, Hogwarts AU, major character permadeath, gore, character bashing.
Prompt 1:
Gary Oak/Ash Ketchum
Palletshipping is the ship of my heart that I’ve had for literally over a decade now. I’m really interested in whatever you come up with, but if you’d like some ideas:
Horror! Anything goes - what if they run into one of the scary glitch pokemon from the games? What if one of them gets possessed? What if they get trapped in some kind of malevolent living structure?
The Warmth of Frost by SilentAvera had some really cool horror vibes that I absolutely loved.
AUs - I love AUs for this pairing, I feel like they’re both really fun to put in new contexts/settings.
A Team Rocket AU could be really fun - Gary as a Rocket scientist hiding that he’s related to Professor Oak, while Ash is trying to work his way up the ranks.
Star Trek AU - I love Star Trek and could easily see them in Starfleet having a similar rivals-to-friends (to lovers) relationship dynamic there.
If you have any particular historical/setting obsessions, I’d love to read them!
I’d be particularly excited about a pirates AU, or pirate/naval officer?
Specific historical countercultures could be fun too. Beatniks?
I’m not super into explicit fic with Pokemon, but I am a fan of secret submissive freak Gary (and see Ash as a pretty vanilla service top lmfao). Gary has to have some Roman Roy shit going on, right? I don’t know if I’d want full on explicit scenes, but how would they navigate that together? If that speaks to you, go for it! I never see it and would love to read more of it! Please age them up for this one.
SFW aged up Palletshipping would also be great. What does Ash do in his 30s? Does Gary take over the lab?
Professor Oak seems to have a role of science educator to children, both in giving young trainers their first pokemon and as a public figure. How does Gary, who even after Johto can still be kind of a prick, adapt to that role?
Gary confessing his feelings to Ash to somebody else could be fun! Maybe he goes out for drinks with Misty and they start talking about Ash, or he tells Professor Oak?
These prompts are not by any means exhaustive! If there’s something that really speaks to you, please feel free to write it!
Prompt 2:
Gary Oak
Definitely thee Pokemon blorbo for me. Really, I’d be interested in any gen that explores what he’s been up to offscreen, but I’ll drop a few prompts:
Johto: What was he doing in Johto? Did he get up to any wild adventures, or experience anything that might have changed him?
If you want to write horror for this I will love you forever. Gary Oak could be a final girl. He has that in him.
What’s his research life like? How is a 12-13 year old just allowed to do scientific research in major labs? Does he have to take classes on the side? Is he getting published?
This could absolutely be an avenue for worldbuilding about education in the Pokemon universe. Professor Elm has a line about Professor Oak supervising his thesis, which raised so many questions for me. Do you have to apply for grants? How do you get your degree? When do you get your degree? Do you have to publish? Do you have to teach?
Grad school/sciences drama could be really fun too!
I think it could be interesting to write Gary with a learning disability. How would that affect him, or reframe the way he acts in the show?
Gen about Gary hanging out with some of Ash’s friends from the anime! Wherever he is, he probably returns to Kanto fairly often. Does he run into Misty or Brock, or Tracey? Is there a friends-of-Ash group chat?
Thank you again!

pleae rant about hamilton
(also disagree on headcanoning real ppl being the same as headcanoning irl celebrities but i don think thats the conversation? though i can explain if u want)
celebrities was just the first thing i can think of but i think headcannoning real people is unhealthy and inappropriate that being said feel free to elaborate i want to hear your opinion on it.
for preference one of my special interest is the revolutionary war so i take this a little personally
my main problem with the fandom is the headcannoning of historical figures. they’re real people who had a lot of influence on the world and our Country as a whole they had lives and families you can’t just Blorbooify them and decide that Lafayette and Washington where dating (fyi Lafayette saw Washington as father figure irl) or general fandom things.
which is isn’t normally a problem let people do what they want in fandom right?
the reason it is a problem is because they can’t seem to separate Washington from their Blorbo and the real one. it’s warping their perception of history of will cause issues in the future. not to mention the musical made Hamilton look like moron, and the musical was a lot of people’s first instruction to him means that it will effect their perception of him as a person. people seem to take it as reality for some reason i haven’t seen this issue with the other historical musicals.
there’s also instances of this outside fandom as well, some time last year i saw someone on tiktok say that Deborah Sampson was trans (she dressed as a man to fight in the revolutionary war) they had no actual sources which is annoying in general. but also isn’t it wrong to decide someone’s identity if they’re not here to say otherwise. i feel like this was a Direct result of the hamilton fandom headcannoning historical figures
(according to my research Deborah Sampson was bi/lesbian but she lied a lot in the book about her life that she co-wrote on top of that the man she was writing it with didn’t believe in lesbians so we will never know for sure)
i love Six and Newies and have no problem with them because from what i’ve seen people understand that it’s not reality, it’s not historical, that they are just characters, sadly it’s not something the hamilton fandom seems to be able to do.
also they seem cultish in general i actually was so put off by the headcannoning of the historical figures so i avoided them at all costs, apparently they did more than just that and now i’m curious
