Beginners Guide To German Punkrock

See, I’ve been getting into german punk the past few months, which is pretty great, since we have a lot of great punk bands.

Please note that most of these bands will be the big ones who do more “mainstream” punk, since it’s easier for punklings* to get into and you can make your way down from them!

-Dritte Wahl: They’re one of THE big names in the german punk rock scene and were founded in 1986 in Rostock at the Baltic Sea. I personally don’t know any punk who doesn’t know of them or loves Dritte Wahl. They’re vocally antifascist (duh…)  and anti-system for the most part.

Advice from my mum: Do not go into the front pit at a Dritte Wahl show unless you are absolutely prepared to get hurt. Advice from me: Listen to her, I’ve been punched in the face several times and had a huge bruise on my face after moshing.

-Die Ärzte: They’re actually kind of really mainstream and not that punk (anymore), except for the early stuff, Planet Punk, 1 2 3 4 Bullenstaat and 5 6 7 8 Bullenstaat. No matter what, german punks usually still love them (except they’re die hard Tote Hosen fans..**) and sing along to what is essentially Spaszpunk.

Still, they hate nazis as much as the next guy and don’t like to fit in. And.. don’t be fooled by their “dad attitude”.

Advice from my stepdad: Everything before the 90s is good.

Fahnenflucht: Fahnenflucht is one of the more “underground” bands, but still largely known. They got founded in 1996 in Rheinberg and just played at the venue I work last year. They remind a bit of Bambix, since they manage to be both punk and melodic. If you like Dritte Wahl, you’ll probably also like Fahnenflucht.

ZSK: If you’re a bit into german punk or are active in the antifascist scene, you might’ve heard “Alerta Alerta, Antifascista”.

ZSK are german skate punk and if you like energetic music, they’re your band, probably. This band is also very anti-nazi and supports the project “Kein Bock auf Nazis”, which provides info material for recognizing fascist structures and also music by antifascist musicians.

Die Toten Hosen: The everlasting rival of Die Ärzte, the Mac Moneysack of German Punkrock with a singer with the worst haircut known to man. Is it obvious that I’m biased? Die Toten Hosen were founded in Düsseldorf in the year of our lord 1982. Next  to Die Ärzte they are one of the most commercially successful bands. Since I don’t (actively) listen to them, I have no more information for you other than they can be kind of pretentious.

Der hat in den Osten gehört. Das System DDR hat den Funpunker in mir hervorgerufen, und das System BRD den Brachialmetaller. Nach der Wende kam mir Feeling B nur noch albern vor. Wir hatten ja auch mit Feeling B versucht, das Land zu reflektieren, in dem wir lebten, als mit dem Mauerfall dieses Land verschwand, mussten auch wir uns wenden. Es gibt bestimmt Leute, die sich festgekrallt haben, aber ich schaue nicht zurück. Wir wurden mitgewendet. Mir tun Funpunk-Bands heute leid. Bei Feeling B musste ich immer gute Laune haben und zeigen, dass ich gut drauf war. Auch wenn mir gar nicht danach war. Morgens um elf schon ein Bier? Ey, na klar! An Rammstein ist schön, dass ich grimmig in der Gegend rumstehen darf und es passt trotzdem ins Unterhaltungskonzept. Das genieße ich. After the Wende, Feeling B just seemed silly to me. I legit don't understand Tumblr's die ärzte fandom.

The band is hilarious and literally labeled as "funpunk" but y'all reblog only the most serious posts here. Funny posts either go ignored or gain only likes but rarely any reblogs. What has happened to everyone? Why don't you reblog funny posts? Funny gifs? Funny videos? Funny art? Since when has dä become so serious as a band that you don't want to have a good laugh with other fans, huh?

I'm so confused. I keep asking myself all the time why does that happen and I don't know if it's just the age gap I have with the rest of the fandom here, my language barrier that makes me to look for the funny stuff from elsewhere when I can't always understand every word they're saying, or when it's about my own posts, is it just what it has always been, in every fandom and group: my sense of humour is just so different from everyone that I have no other option but to laugh at things alone.

The reason why I became a fan of this band and why I'm still a huge fan after almost 12 years is because I didn't need to understand the language in order to laugh "with" them. For years I had no clue what they were saying and yet I laughed because they laughed in a video too. You guys might want to try to relax a bit, laughing is fun, actually. Talking from an experience.

Lorenz: Überhaupt nicht. Ich bin auch Ärzte-Fan. Wir sind alle gut miteinander befreundet. Die kommen zu unseren Konzerten, wir gehen zu ihren, und anschließend trinken wir ein Bier zusammen. Das gehört dazu. / Not at all. I’m Ärzte fan too. We’re all good friends. They come to our gigs, we go to theirs, and afterwards we have a beer together. It’s part of the deal.

We tried to reflect the country in which we lived with Feeling B, when the country disappeared with the fall of the wall we had to make a turn as well. There are for sure people who couldn’t let go but I don’t look back. I pity funpunk bands nowadays. With Feeling B I always had to to be cheerful and show that I was in a good mood. Even when I didn’t feel like that at all. Having a beer at 11 am in the morning? Hell, yeah!
