Wellness Gardens: Designing Outdoor Spaces for Mind, Body, and Soul
In the fast-paced world we live in, finding moments of tranquility and balance is essential for our overall well-being. As we increasingly recognize the importance of mental and physical health, the concept of wellness gardens has gained popularity. These outdoor spaces are carefully crafted to nurture not only the plants but also the well-being of those who inhabit them. In this blog, we will delve into the art of designing wellness gardens, exploring the profound impact they can have on our mind, body, and soul.
1. The Rise of Wellness Gardens
In recent years, there has been a noticeable surge in the popularity of wellness gardens. With the hustle and bustle of urban life, people are seeking refuge in outdoor spaces that provide a sense of calm and rejuvenation. According to recent statistics in the UK, there has been a 20% increase in the number of households incorporating wellness features into their gardens.
2. Mindful Design for Mental Well-being
One of the key principles of wellness garden design is mindfulness. Creating a space that promotes mental well-being involves careful consideration of layout, colors, and natural elements. Recent studies have shown that exposure to nature and green spaces can significantly reduce stress levels and improve overall mental health. Incorporating meditation areas, water features, and natural pathways are all integral components of mindful garden design.
3. Tree & Hedge Planting: The Pillars of Wellness
The strategic planting of trees and hedges plays a crucial role in wellness garden design. Trees not only provide shade and oxygen but also contribute to the overall aesthetics of the garden. Hedges, on the other hand, create natural boundaries, offering a sense of privacy and enclosure. According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the demand for native trees and hedges has surged by 15% in the past year, indicating a growing interest in creating sustainable and ecologically rich outdoor spaces.
4. Garden Design for Physical Health
Wellness gardens are not only about mental rejuvenation but also about promoting physical health. The design should encourage movement and outdoor activities. Incorporating functional spaces for yoga, exercise, or simply lounging in the fresh air is essential. Recent statistics reveal a 25% increase in home gyms and outdoor exercise spaces integrated into garden designs across the UK.
5. Creating a Sustainable Oasis
Garden design with sustainability in mind is a key aspect of the wellness movement. Sustainable gardening practices, such as rainwater harvesting, composting, and using native plants, contribute to the overall well-being of the environment and its inhabitants. The UK has seen a 30% rise in the adoption of sustainable gardening practices, reflecting a growing consciousness about environmental impact.
6. The Therapeutic Power of Gardening
Beyond the physical and mental aspects, gardening itself has therapeutic benefits. Recent studies from the National Gardening Association indicate that engaging in gardening activities can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Whether it's planting flowers, tending to vegetables, or simply enjoying the sensory experience of soil and plants, gardening fosters a deep connection with nature and promotes a sense of accomplishment.
Conclusion: Cultivating Harmony in Outdoor Spaces
In conclusion, wellness gardens have emerged as sanctuaries for individuals seeking respite from the demands of modern life. By integrating elements of mindfulness, sustainable practices, and physical activity, these outdoor spaces cater to the holistic well-being of their inhabitants. As the statistics from the UK suggest, there is a growing recognition of the importance of wellness gardens, with more people embracing the idea of creating harmonious and health-promoting outdoor spaces.
In the ever-evolving field of garden design, the emphasis on wellness serves as a reminder that our outdoor spaces can be more than just aesthetically pleasing—they can be transformative, promoting a sense of balance and harmony for the mind, body, and soul. So, whether you have a sprawling backyard or a tiny balcony, consider infusing elements of wellness into your outdoor space and experience the profound impact it can have on your overall well-being.

I was being annoyed about how I wish I could be one of those really tall lanky guys but that was never an option so I'm just gonna have to learn how to cope. Then someone popped in to contradict, because Coping Is Bad and I should just fix my problems instead. I said there's fuck all I can do about my height, and this mf goes "nuh-uh, yes there is", and told me to get that leg lenghtening surgery. I told him that there's no fucking fathomable way that that shit could make me significantly above average. Send proof.
Coping Cop sends me a link to a height surgery expert website, where they explain that if you have both your femurs and your lower leg bones broken, you can gain up to 12-14 cm. This is the agreed safe maximum amount they can do. I am 168 cm tall. The average male height in Finland is 180 cm. If I got both my legs broken in two places, in a surgery that takes you like a whole fucking year to recover, and costs more than a new car, I could be like. 2 cm above average. For the americans in the audience, that's like three quarters of an inch.
That is not significantly tall.

I have a thing for rust. Sealing it is key if it’s an indoor piece that you want to display. I also love recycling and reusing. Look at how adorable this coffeeshop in Thailand is. It would make great inspiration for a salvaged tiny house.
How nicely it blends in with greenery.
The kitchen and counter area. So cute.
Dine outside on the pretty patio.
Or, relax here with a cup of coffee.
How about a ride on the swing?
This corner is set up so that customers and tourists can take pictures.
What a delightful place.
