artists: the second
Returning to Gerwald Rockenschaub, and again the piece 'Bend It' as a focus, the concepts of plane and balance are represented effectively. The ideas of plane are simply shown through the consistent placement of Rockenschaub's pieces on a single flat plane (typically a wall). Simply put, this work's balance is nearly nonexistent, until the viewer realises that each block of colour sits generally neatly within a series of consistent widths. in this way, the implied balance of the work is evident, until it is spoiled once again by the vertical issues presented by the height and vertical placement of each block. what I'm saying is that it's implied balance is simultaneously present and not present depending on the specific interpretation of the piece.
Michael Parekowhai works with physical balance in his piece 'The Promised Land' which as a baseline plays with the audience's associations of seals and their balancing acts.
the piece literally shows a seal balancing a piano on it's nose, but like my wooden piece, there really is no danger of it falling at any point.
