i've been wanting to say this but thinking about

how the weaponisation or the weaponhood of the aptly named weapon hybrids dominates the story, carrying over from part 1 where it was a subtheme into a major theme in part 2;

it's denji's struggle with viewing himself outside the scaffoldings of the worldview lent to him inside public safety by makima. it's a capitalism informed allegory. you see it in miri who conversely plays into this weaponhood while verbally denying it, in quanxi (in part 1) with her assumed ignorance. the factions of the church and public safety dissolve here,

and asa's power being quite literally Making people into weapons hits the nail on the head. the core theme functions in how denji cannot deweapon himself. in his attachment to that status or rather the icon which emanates from that status.

iconography assumes more importance in part 2 with multiple panels including the very first chapter being dedicated to Portrayals Of Chainsaw Man and in the later chapters the growing showcasing of asa in similar imagery as associated with chainsaw man. pair that with CSM being displayed in his hybrid transformed state and asa meanwhile retaining her human characteristics:

the transforming of CSM into an Icon bleeds him of his humanity, his familial connections while turning him into a Weapon, a larger than life idea. and asa, in her status as the war devil, facilitates this transformation as the wielder of maybe not the Literal csm (yet) but at least the idea of him.
