You kicked off your shoes as you entered Rei’s apartment. You practically lived there by now with how close you two have gotten and how much he wants you around. After a long day at your corporate job, you just wanted to relax in his arms. You took long strides and approached him, noticing that he was playing games in in the dark again. You were able to slip yourself under his arms, sitting between his legs as you gazed at his shooting abilities in the game. “Welcome home,” he mumbled whilst planting kisses on your scalp and inhaled your scent while still keeping his eyes still on the game.

You dusted off the coffee table, wiping the bits of ash on the floor to sweep and vacuum for a later time. This was a regular occurrence that you were over at your lover's, Rei's apartment. You practically lived there by now with how much you're over. You couldn't help it. They needed somebody to tidy up the house and sometimes look after their kid. You bent down to pick up the blankets and toys off of the floor. Miri was a sweet little girl that you loved looking after and you were happy to take a load off of her papa's hands. You looked at the time on your phone and noticed a text from Rei. 'Comin home soon, you want any food?' You smiled at his offer, feeling a bit peckish. 'Sure, surprise me!' You wrote back, he knew your favourites by now.

Since it was late and their mission ran all day, you wanted to do something nice for Rei. Pondering for a bit, you decided to run Rei a bath. He loves your touch and who is he to say no to a massage and an intimate moment? Kazuki would thank you too as he constantly complained about his hygiene. You made your upstairs, quietly of course to not disturb Miri in her sleep. Cracking open the washroom door, you were all too familiar with the layout of the room. For the first month of being with your lover, you would sleep in the tub with him as it made him feel safe and comfortable. Now he is able to doze off easily as long as you were beside him. Bending over, you picked up the blanket and pillows scattered around the tub, tossing them aside before you turned on the faucet. The gushing of water into the tub masked the sound of the duo coming home. You opened the cabinets to see the selection of shampoo and body wash you were working with. You decided on a sweet vanilla scent as Rei loved sweets. You were humming to yourself, unaware that the door to the washroom was being opened. As you set your findings down on the edge of the tub, you felt a pair of arms wrap around your waist and locks of dark brown drape over your neck. 

"(Y/N) missed you... what's all this?" He mumbled into the crook of your neck. You were startled and twitched a bit as you smiled realizing who it was. "Just wanted to treat you to a nice bath after a long day." He hummed and planted a chaste kiss on your cheek. "Do I have to? I'm sleepy..." "Yes Rei, I'll give you a massage I know how tense your muscles get after being in a sniping position in so long." He easily gave in as you poured the shampoo into the tub. You turned around to properly face him and plant your lips on him. "Welcome home. Sorry I didn't hear you down there," you apologized.   

He first removed the hair tie from his slicked back hair, letting his locks flow loose. You wanted to massage his scalp right then and there and admire how fluffy his hair looked. You let your eyes trail down his chest as he stripped himself from his suit which was muddy. He definitely needed this bath. "What happened? You usually hate getting your suits dirty," you inquired. "Had to sacrifice it to hide or we'd be dead," he bluntly put. You nodded, happy that he made it out. The two of you knew the risks of being in his line of work. He could die any day and you could be in harms way, and the odds are tripled with the two raising a child along with it. It was a risk you were willing to take though, he was worth everything. His toned chest was soon exposed as his clothes were laying about the floor. "Lemme go throw these in the wash for you," you reacted, starting to bend down to pick up the soiled clothes. He stepped forward blocking you as you bumped your head into his bare chest. "Later, just want you with me right now..." he murmured. He looked exhausted and the stress from the day was still worn on his face. "Fine." You shut the faucet as the tub was at its capacity and dipped your finger in the water. Nice and warm just for Rei. 

You also started to strip yourself of your clothes, tossing your sweater on the floor and stepping out of your pants. It wasn't the first time that the two of you had been bare in front of each other. Occasionally the two of you would do the deed to relieve stress but it was rare, but Rei trusted you with his entire being to be able to be this vulnerable in front of you. You soon got in the tub with him, feeling the warmth of the water against your skin. You grabbed the conditioner as you wanted to wash Rei's hair for him. "Turn around for me baby," you whispered. He obeyed as you lathered your hands with the conditioner and started to drape his locks with the suds. You ran your fingers through his dark strands, raking across his scalp as he let out a sigh of content. Massaging his temple, feeling the built up tension there made you wonder when the last time he was truly able to let go and relax was. You worked your way up to the top of his head, lathering the suds on his hair. "Feel good love?" You cooed. He hummed with content, allowing himself to melt into your touch. 

After working through his head, you grabbed the vanilla scented body wash and lathered it on your hands before placing your hands on his tense shoulders, intending on giving him a massage whilst cleaning him. He groaned, feeling the knots finally move in his tense form. "I know its supposed to hurt, you're doing so well," you commented whilst planting kisses on his neck. He loves your touch so much. Working your way down his back, you could really feel his muscles loosening up after working your strength on them for awhile. Letting your hands work on his back, you traced over his scars silently as you admired his form. He confided in you before, telling his story about each scar during the more intimate moments of your relationship whether it be from his abusive father or a failed mission. You leaned in and ghosted your lips over a scar on his back before finally kissing it. The silence was comforting to him too. 

"Raise your arms up for me," you smiled as you got more body wash. You let the bubbles gather up on your hand before gently rubbing your hands on his arm and armpits, causing him to recoil a bit in discomfort. "Mm ticklish," he commented. You giggled a bit. "I know just bear with me."

"Turn around for me baby," you mused after you finished massaging and lathering up his back side. He turned around as you shifted your position and pressed a hand on his chest. "Now you can lean back and relax," you smiled sweetly. You carefully leaned him back on the tub to soak his back with the warm water. It's also good for his spine, he must feel a lot of pain being hunched over in a position for so long, you thought. You grabbed the conditioner as well to lather through your own hair. As you were running your fingers through your hair, you felt his hands run snake up your neck to your hair. "Let me..." he whispered. You were flattered by his offer and adjusted yourself to lean against his chest. Running his fingers through your hair, he hummed "You're beautiful (Y/N)." After being with him for awhile, you still blushed at his compliments as they were rare. "So are you Rei." You leaned your head back, enjoying his delicate touch against your scalp as you shared this intimate moment with your lover. He wrapped his arms around your nude form, holding you whilst placing a chin on your shoulder. He stared at your beauty, admiring you in silence. A genuine smile could be seen from his face, you loved it when he could truly express around you. He planted kisses on your jawline and down your clavicle. You could almost fall asleep as his fingers danced around your stomach lovingly.   

Feeling a little silly, you scooped up the bubbles on the surface and blew on them, making them fly. You repeated the action and turned towards Rei as you gently whispered the bubbles towards his face, some landing on his hair and tip of his nose. "Cute," you giggled. He let himself grin as he also cupped some bubbles to blow back at you. You loved that he could let his guard down around you and fool around like nothing mattered in the moment. After a bit of the bubble war, you noticed the water was getting cold meaning it was probably time to get out. 

"Lets get you rinsed and dried off." You ran fresh warm water through Rei's hair and down his back to rid the suds and he did the same for you. You stood up, grabbing a towel for him from the towel rack and felt the coldness of the room hit you. You felt his arms wrap around you as you started to shiver. "You're shivering..." he commented. He knows you get cold easily. You maneuver yourself to turn around and drape a towel on him. He made no effort to let go of you and pulled you closer, landing his lips on yours, exchanging warmth. You melted into his kiss, letting his tongue dance around your mouth. You were his first kiss and you had taught him how to kiss you properly. Now he can't get enough of you. You pulled away, catching your breath as you ruffled the towel through his drippy locks and down his body to dry him off. Draping a towel around yourself too, the two of you stepped out of the tub as the water drained.

Having stayed at Rei's place often, you had kept a couple pairs of pajamas and other garments there at his place. You grabbed your favourite onesie and dawned it on, looking at yourself in the mirror. It was Rei's favourite one on you too, as it was one that looked like a tabby kitty. He slipped one of his loose shirts on himself and a pair of sweat-shorts and gazed upon you. "Adorable," he said with a half smile. You bounced towards him to grasp his hands. "Ready to sleep?" 

He was more than happy to sleep in a bed with you tonight. He didn't want to sleep in a soggy cold tub especially when you were here. He felt relaxed now that you had given him a bath and a massage. He smiled to himself as he held you in his arms, he was wanted and loved by you, safe with you. Your small snores showed your exhaustion from the day, taking care of Miri, cleaning the flat, and pampering him at the end of the day. He felt so lucky to have you. 

"Love you (Y/N). Sleep well." He whispered, letting his sentiment go in the dark.

Slow Mornings (Rei x Reader)

You stirred in your sleep as you heard the tapping of the rain against the washroom window. You felt your lover behind you shift as he held you closer to him, burying his face in the crook of your neck. The tub was large enough to fit the two of you, it wasn’t comfortable but not uncomfortable by all means. You much rather have preferred a bed but in Rei’s state from last night, he wouldn’t have been comfortable and you would rather sacrifice comfort to keep him feeling safe.

Last night was pretty rough, you were sitting next to Rei in the tub as he held his head down, trying to suppress the anxious thoughts that were coming to mind, triggered by his past. You sat there stroking his back and rubbing his shoulder, telling him it was going to be okay. He was never vocal when it came to dealing with his PTSD, he only recently allowed you to stay by his side when he was feeling this way and you two had been together for over a year. He trusted you to take care of him and be there as someone he could lean on. “Baby it’s going to be okay, he’s unable to hurt you anymore. I’m here…” you whispered, trying your best to soothe his aching mind. It was the first time that you saw a tear slip from his eye and it glistened against the moonlight. He let you lace your fingers with his and leaned against your figure. “Deep breaths Rei, deep breaths.” He did as he was told to stabilize his breathing. “You can rest now, I promise everything will be okay.” He let himself go, the haze that clouded his mind slowly slip away as he fell against your shoulder with exhaustion. You softly placed a kiss on his forehead whilst wiping the tear away from his soft pale cheek. “You deserve so much love Rei… I love you.” You covered him with a blanket and settled beside him, trying to get comfortable in the multitude of pillows that were in the tub that he placed down for you. 

You focused on the pitter patter of the rain against the washroom window as you knew this was going to be a slow morning. You knew that Kazuki and Rei had the day off, meaning Rei could slumber for as long as he wanted to to recover from last night’s events. You shifted a bit to turn yourself around to face your lover. You stared at his peaceful sleeping figure, wondering if his nightmares and anxiety subsided. You hoped that you had given him enough comfort to get a good nights rest at the very least. You placed a hand on his cheek and admired his beauty. His stone cold stare that he gave most people softened once he saw you and during his slumber. ‘Cute…’ you thought. 

You smelled the scent of fresh eggs and potatoes wafting through the bottom of the door as your stomach grumbled. Kazuki must be cooking breakfast for Miri, your thoughts were confirmed by muffled high pitched laughter and mumbling beyond the washroom door. You looked back at Rei, feeling guilty that you were a bit hungry and wanted to go snag a bite of food but also didn’t want to leave his side. You pressed a soft kiss on the tip of his nose and whispered, “Be right back.” Just as you were able to untangle yourself from his arms, you rose from the tub, trying to maintain your balance. Just as you were about to step out of the tub, you felt a hand grasp at your wrist. “(Y/N), stay…,” he mumbled. Who were you to go against his cute groggy voice. With his eyes still closed, he gently held you close to him and planted a soft kiss on your lips. “Thank you… for last night.” 

You hummed in approval. “Of course Rei, I’m here. I’m not leaving your side. You feeling better though?” You saw a small smile form in his face before his eyes opened just a bit to gaze upon your face. “Yeah…” Even after a year of being together, he still got flustered at the sight of you and your beauty, but he loved to stare at you and admire you. You pulled him in for another heartwarming kiss as he relaxed into your touch. “Hope the tub wasn’t too hard for you to sleep in…” he mumbled after you pulled away. “It was fine, I know it’s hard for you to sleep elsewhere during tough times like last night.” “I’m so lucky to have you…” he confessed. 

You leaned it and peppered kisses down his cheek and neck. It took him awhile to get used to your touch but he learned to love it and even to this day, he still got butterflies in his stomach when you kiss him like that. The two of you didn’t share your first kiss till 6 months into the relationship. He never even thought that he was capable of loving, much less being loved, but your demeanor and personality kept him captivated. The first time you held his hand it felt foreign to him, but he felt safe and slowly he learned that it felt right. He loved your touch, it made him feel at home. He loved slow mornings like these when mostly everything was peaceful and quiet and he could have you all to himself. He wrapped his arms around you and closed his eyes again with a smile that only you could see. 

Everything being peaceful would have entailed the door not being knocked on and door handle being jiggled with high pitched giggles outside. “Rei Papa! Come eat with me and Kazuki Papa! (Y/N) too! I’m gonna eat all the pudding if you don’t hurry!”

“We’re sleeping!” Rei yelled out in annoyance as he rested his head on top of yours again with his eyes closed.

You let out a sigh as you put on your gaming headphones, glancing to the side of the massive pile of papers and textbooks next to you that you knew you had to burn into your mind before your final exams. A bit of a break wouldn’t hurt right? You switched your status to online and hovered your mouse over you friend Rei’s profile.

You were deprived of human contact besides your roommate but you hadn’t seen them in awhile either as the two of you were busy gearing up for your finals, thankfully the last time you would have to do them as you would be done with university by the end of the month.

‘Wanna race?’ you typed to Rei. His instant response to you didn’t surprise you at this time of night, he would go on benders sometimes, gaming for nights in a row. He was someone who you could talk to online, although you had never met him you didn’t feel as if he had malicious intent and therefore trusted him. He wasn’t much of a talker, but he would listen to you ramble to no end. You had met him through an online forum that you would post your gaming highlight reels on and he seemed to interact with your posts every time, despite having a vast following you had noticed his interactions.

You messaged him and the two of you started chatting. It was mainly about Morio Kart, sharing techniques and talking about your favourite builds. It branched into other games the two of you shared in common too and one thing led to another and the two of you would play games together. You hadn’t spoken to him for awhile though with your busy schedule and his, as far as you knew he told you that he and his roommate were private investigators but kept pretty quiet about the specifics about his job. Nonetheless you missed him, you loved late night discussions with him, even if it was one sided. 

‘Sure.’ he simply replied. ‘Call or nah? I have a lot I wanna catch you up on’ you typed, hoping that you could get him onto a call. The two of you called a couple times in the past, you always initiated first as you picked up that he was pretty reserved. His voice took you by surprise at first, you knew that Rei was a man, but wasn’t expecting his voice to be so deep and… attractive. You hadn’t seen his face yet, but you already found him pretty attractive with his personality and voice. 

Rei looked around his surroundings, the reason why he had been so preoccupied recently and hadn’t been calling with you was because of Miri. The incident where Kazuki took in a little girl of the father that they had to kill during a mission took up most of his time. With finding a suitable daycare to buying supplies, and almost rendering the two of them broke, he had to cut back on gaming. Things were slowly going back to normal though, as normal as things could be with raising their new daughter that they had taken in. She was passed out on the couch next to him, but he usually didn’t talk that loudly anyway and Kazuki was taking a nap, why not? He turned his mic on in his headphones and pressed the button on your profile to call you. 

“What’s up Rei?” you chimed as you connected to the call. “Exhausted. Finally have some time for myself though…” he mumbled, trying not to be too loud. You had to turn up his volume. “Gah yeah, tell me about it. I’ve been so swamped with essays and studying for my finals. What’s been on your plate?” “I have a daughter now,” he bluntly spewed out. “What?” That was something you were not expecting from him, not in a million years. You had always known him as an isolated being, just wanting a kitty to accompany him but had to live with a rowdy couch crasher but took care of him. Was he seeing someone this entire time? Was it his? “You mean a cat right? You finally adopted one?” you asked lightheartedly, hoping that your previous thoughts weren’t true. “No. A little girl.” 

Damn, so it was true. The few months of getting to know him and developing bits and pieces of feelings for him shattered immediately, or so you hoped as you felt a pang in your chest.”With who?” your voice cracked a bit, hoping it wouldn’t be heard on Rei’s end. “Um during our work we ran into a little girl who was convinced that Kazuki was her papa. He looked similar to the guy in the photo she was holding to find her papa so he took her in. Now I’m kinda… forced to be a father too.” He sugar coated the fact that he had shot her actual father and now they are dealing with the consequences of their line of work. “Oh haha! So you weren’t seeing anybody and accidentally had a kid?” “(Y/N) you know how much I despise children… I wouldn’t do that, but Miri is ok… you’d like her.” You let out an invisible sigh of relief, knowing that he wasn’t seeing anyone as far as you knew. 

“That’s adorable Rei. You’ll be an amazing father! Let me know if you need me to babysit sometime, I’m surprisingly good with kids,” you joked around. You hadn’t even met him in person yet, but was this an opportunity amidst your joking manner? “(Y/N) I know you said you’re in the area, but maybe… in the future… you could?” Rei and Kazuki were exhausted by parenthood, they were looking into getting her a babysitter for the times when they would have to go scope or execute their missions in the middle of the night. “Wait actually?” “Yeah… maybe.” He was eager to lessen the load for their roommate and contribute something for once, and have a chance to meet you. Rei’s face flushed a light tint of pink, thinking about the idea of meeting you after so long. 

“Rei Papa, who are you talking to?” The sound of a little girl suddenly chimed in your headphones. You smiled a bit, Miri called him papa, how adorable. You heard him groan on the other side. “Miri go upstairs and tell Kazuki to put you to bed.” “But papa I’m not tired! I just slept! I wanna play Morio Kart!” She started to throw a tantrum. “(Y/N) I’ll message you later. I need to deal with Miri.” You chuckled, hearing him go into ‘parent mode’. “Sure, I’ll talk to you later Rei.” With that he hung up, and you grinned to yourself. He’s so adorable. Now that the highlight of your night was over, you rubbed your eyes and shifted your head towards the textbooks and papers again. You could only procrastinate for so long. You groaned as you grabbed your psychology textbook, getting back to it trying to shove Rei to the back of your mind.

You groaned as you felt your back crack, lifting yourself up from your desk. What time was it? It wasn’t the first time you had fallen asleep like that studying at your desk. Your back ached though from your posture, when had you even fallen asleep? You heard a ‘ding’ from your phone as you picked it up. It was already noon? You usually didn’t even sleep in this late. You swiped up to see your messages, two of them from Rei. ‘Sorry ‘bout last night. Do you think we could meet?’ ‘Miri wants to meet you, and we need a babysitter.’ Your heart skipped a beat, Rei was asking to meet you? You trusted that he wasn’t some creepy old man with bad intentions, you heard Miri last night too, you had to trust him that his situation was real with how much time you’ve spend with him.

You replied back, ‘Sure, what are are you located in? We can meet in public first, but I trust you.’ He sent a location at a nearby mall in the city, that was only a couple miles away from you. ‘No way that’s so close! We could meet there, when were you thinking?’ you texted back eagerly. ‘Today. If you can, at 3?.’ you started to feel giddy, you always loved meeting friends you got close to online and Rei wouldn’t be the first. Your heart started to race a bit, wondering what he looked like and if he would be the same as he was online. ‘Absolutely.’ you replied, rushing to get changed into a nicer outfit. 

Rei looked down in his phone, feeling a bit nervous now knowing that he was going to meet you in person. He had never initiated any plans with anybody else besides Kazuki before. This was foreign to him. You meant a lot to him, somebody that he could sit in silence with sometimes and he enjoyed listening to you ramble, even if he knew that he wasn’t the one to give the best advice. Through the months that the two of you had gotten closer, he also developed some sort of feelings for you although he did not know how to put it into words. He had told Kazuki the night before about your offer to babysit Miri to lessen the load for their missions and he was ecstatic. He picked out a nice suit to wear, trying to look nice for you.

He put his hair back, sideburns showing as he would usually do on his missions. He walked out of the room, tie in hand, knowing that he had to ask Kazuki to help him as he always did before their missions. “Kazuki…” he called out in routine. The blonde turned his head and gazed at him all dressed up. “Rei what’s all this for, I thought we were just meeting your friend at the mall, not going on a mission.” Rei had realized that too and started to blush as he averted his eyes from Kazuki’s direction. He caught on pretty quick. Grabbing the tie in his hand he gently put it around Rei to help him out. “Oh Rei, trying to impress them I see?” he said with a smug smile. “No…” Rei muttered. “You usually don’t give any effort in what you wear when we take Miri out to go shopping, you like em don’tcha?” he giggled. “I don’t know…” Rei answered dryly, still looking away from Kazuki with a blush. “Well in that case, I should dress up to par with you too, don’t wanna be looking like the housewife or anything and maybe I’ll impress em too!” he teased. Rei shot him a glare. “Alright I’m not some partner stealer don’t worry.” “It’s not like that,” he grumbled. Kazuki stepped back after helping Rei with his tie. He shot him a smirk. “Yet.” 

You spritz on a spray of your favourite scent. Looking in the mirror, you had a modest fashionable outfit on, trying to look your best for Rei. You picked up your phone and realized that it was already 2:45 PM. You were going to be late. You grabbed your keys and exited your shared apartment.  Your roommate caught a whiff of your strong vanilla scent that you put on and turned their head. “Headin’ out on a date?” you heard them remark. “Uh, something like that!” you shrugged whilst rushing to put on your shoes and head out the door. “Stay safe! Call me if you need an excuse to leave!” You smiled to yourself, heart racing as the time ticked down to the moment you were going to meet Rei. Surely it wouldn’t be that bad, you enjoyed his company online, even the silences became comforting at this point instead of being awkward.

You rushed towards the meeting spot, checking the time every once in awhile knowing that you still had a ways to walk. By the time you got to the entrance of the mall that Rei had texted you that they were at, you were out of breath. Hiding behind a corner, you decide to straighten yourself up and wipe the beads of sweat away from your forehead before approaching them. You took a deep breath and hoped that you didn’t smell gross from the exercise you had done to get there. You peered your head around the corner and looked down to see a little girl at your feet. “Are you (Y/N)?” she beamed. 

That must be Miri, you thought. You nodded and stammered, “Yes I am! Are you Miri?” You glanced your head up to see a blonde and a darker haired male standing not too far away looking in your direction. That must be them! You wondered which one Rei was, you had a feeling that he was the one in the suit and slicked back hair. You giggled, he’s cute. You stepped out from the shadows. “My papas wanted me to meet you!” She exclaimed with joy. She really was a bundle of happiness if you’d ever seen one. You glanced up at Rei whose eyes were widened now after noticing you and held up a hand in a slow wave. You ran towards him, time stopping a bit as you crashed into him with a hug.

You felt one arm around you patting your back awkwardly as you pulled away, a bit embarrassed as you were normally pretty touchy with the people close to you. “Sorry Rei, uh, it’s wonderful to finally meet you!” His cheeks tinted pink as he gave you a half smile. “(Y/N)... I don’t mind… this is Kazuki and Miri.” He began, mumbling the first part. “(Y/N)! Don’t I get an introductory hug too?” Kazuki joked, opening his arms up. Rei shot him a glance. You shrugged and accepted it, he patted you on the back with the embrace. He was shooting daggers at Kazuki. “Miri too!” You heard the brown haired girl exclaim. You smiled, kneeling down to pick her up as she giggled. “She seems to take a liking to you already,” Kazuki cheered. You smiled and nodded. “So (Y/N), down to be our babysitter? I’m sure Rei has already told you lots about our situation,” he grinned. “Of course! When do you need me?” He looked at Rei. “Tomorrow if you’re not busy um… but if you wanna see our apartment and familiar with things we can right now… or if you want to game,” he added the last part with a hush. “I’d love to Rei.”

The four of you walked back from the mall entrance to Rei’s flat. You and Rei trailed behind, walking in silence as Miri begged Kazuki for an ice cream cone as she noticed a stand with colourful decor. You stood next to Rei, appreciating your time with him. “You look really nice, the suit fits you.” You commented, feeling a bit shy now.” His expression softened as he glanced at you. “You’re really pretty…” he mumbled. You felt your lips tug into a smile as you blushed. “You’re sweet. I’m glad you’re just like how you are online and not some creepy human trafficker.” You joked trying to feel less shy. “Hate those kinds of creeps,” he mumbled. “Me too.” You leaned back against the wall as you watched Miri choose her ice cream flavours and Kazuki chat up the lady at the stand. You went to stretch your back as you heard a crack and lost your footing, falling into Rei who was also leaning against the wall.

Instinctively, he reached out and caught you before you smashed your head on the wall and grasped your arm. His loose strand of dark brown hanging down brushed against your face as you shifted your orbs to meet his. He’s beautiful. Realizing the predicament you were in, you hoisted yourself back up. “Sorry ah, I had a long night of studying and fell asleep at my desk!” You exclaimed, noticing his hand still having a hold on your arm. “I don’t mind…” he blushed as he slowly let go of your arm, the two of you not wanting to break contact. You looked towards the distance and saw Kazuki and Miri walking back with an ice cream in hand. You turned towards to Rei who was still flustered. “Let’s go.” 

The group arrived at the apartment and you stepped in, gazing at the luxury. I guess that was how two private investigators spent their money. “C’mon (Y/N) let me give you a tour so you know where things are for tomorrow!” Kazuki beamed. Miri followed behind closely, wanting to talk to you more. “I’ll have food prepared so it’ll be in the fridge on the top shelf, just reheat it and it’ll be good to go!” He whispered the next part. “And the pudding is in this box. Rei and Miri love pudding.” Miri’s ears perked up. “Pudding! I want pudding!” Rei turned his head too as he was messing with his consoles to prepare for you. Kazuki shook his hands frantically and hopped away. “Quickly uh, over here is where the emergency first aid is kept, never know when you might need it, and Miri’s bedroom is upstairs with the flowers on the door!” You peered down as you felt a tug on your pants. “I want to take a nap. Sleepy…” Miri mumbled. You looked at Kazuki. He sighed as he bent down to scoop her up. “Guess I’ll put her to bed now.”

You stepped away as you looked towards Rei, already sitting on the couch and gestures for you to come. You sat next to him and looked on the screen. He had already set up Morio Kart for the two of you to mess around in. He handed you a controller as you smiled. “Never thought we would be able to race together in person.” “I’ll beat you…” he said with enthusiasm in his tone. After a while of racing, you won more races against him fair and square as he sulked at your gloating. “I lost on purpose for you…” he mumbled, a half true statement. You giggled and leaned towards Rei, resting your head on his shoulder as your leg touched his. “I’m glad I could finally meet you y’know.” He hummed in agreement as he set his controller down. Kazuki hadn’t come down in awhile, assuming he had put Miri to nap and also fell asleep there himself.

The room was dark at this point as the two of you had been playing for awhile. The only light was illuminated from the TV screen, giving light to his facial features as you looked up to admire him. You felt his hand shift from his lap to gently touch yours. Your fingers mindlessly danced around his as they found their way in between his. It felt right. You relaxed against his comfort as he stiffened up, not used to this touch and physical contact. “Am I making you uncomfortable?” You asked with worry. He shook his head. “Just never had this…” you knew a bit about his past, about how rough his father treated him but not in detail and he wasn’t one to socialize around and be touchy. But he felt your hand in his and it felt comforting to him, he liked it.

Your phone lit up with a notification as you noticed the time. It was already 8 PM and you had an essay due that night. You jolted away from your position, startling Rei. “Shit sorry, I just have an essay due soon. After playing with you last night I tried to study and just passed out I’m sorry!” You apologized, knowing you had to get back and it was a walk away. “Wait (Y/N), let me drive you.” He was so thoughtful but you didn’t want to inconvenience him. “Are you sure?” He nodded firmly as he stood up to grab the keys to the car. 

You sat in the passenger seat and looked out at the window at the illuminating lights that made your face glow. You didn’t notice but Rei was staring at you at the red light. You were stunning to him, and he knew that he had fully fallen, the butterflies churning in his tummy was a dead giveaway. He had never felt anything like this before. “Sleep after you finish your work… in your bed ok?” He asked with a soft tone. You hummed. “I’ll try. What time did you want me at your place?” “Around 5. You can bring your work too if it’s too much. We’ll pay you too for your trouble…” Rei offered. You shook your head. “No need. Just take me on a date…” you mumbled the last part. “Hm?” He asked, hoping you’d repeat the last part. You lost your sudden confidence, fearful that he would not reciprocate. “Nothing, just thanks for the ride! I’ll see you tomorrow!” You beamed whilst exiting the vehicle. He watched as your figure disappeared into the darkness of your apartment complex. He couldn’t wait to see you again. And for the record he did want to take you on that date. 

You ran inside to get started on your essay with an hour or two to complete it. Trying to push Rei out of your mind for the time was difficult, the day went so well. You thoroughly enjoyed his company and had fallen for him harder than before. He checked all of your boxes in a potential partner and not to mention that he had an adorable daughter and was so thoughtful. You would have been able to fully focus if you hadn’t received a text an hour into your focused mindset from Rei that said ‘sleep well’ with a kitty blowing a kiss emoji at you. 

The following day you were exhausted. You had managed to turn in your essay on time and spent some more time studying for your finals that were coming up in about two weeks. Groaning, you knew you had to get out of bed as you had chores to do, it was your turn to clean the apartment this week and pack your things to head to Rei’s place later to babysit Miri. Shoving your textbooks and laptop into your bag, you hear a notification from your desktop and saw that it was from Rei. Your face automatically lit up as you clicked to open his message. “Need a ride?” As much as you wanted to be with him as soon as possible again, you decided that the walk was needed to get some fresh air before committing to more work again. ‘I’ll walk to destress a bit, but I can’t wait to see you again!’

As you walked out of your room to vacuum the apartment, you seemed in a happier mood than usual as your roommate noticed you from the kitchen table. “Date went well yesterday?” they asked grinning at you. “Uh yeah! Gonna babysit his kid today,” you remarked. “Damn (Y/N), getting it on with a dad?” they smirked. “Nah it’s not like that, just a special circumstance.” “Well just make sure he’s not a player or a liar.” “He’s not like that, just an extreme introvert who loves to play games,” you smiled. 

Rei stared at himself in the closet, knowing that had to wear stealth clothes to blend in with the public, meaning just his regular attire and not a suit. He wanted to impress you again, a bit fearful that you wouldn’t find him attractive with his hair down. Kazuki caught onto his tension and made his way over. “Relax, I have a feeling that (Y/N) likes you for you, don’t worry about it too much.” He tensed up with embarrassment, not knowing that he could give away his emotions that easily. “How do you know?” “Just trust me Rei,” he grinned. Just as you were on the topic of their conversation, they heard you knocking on the door and an excited squeal from Miri as she came running from her bedroom.

Rei was the one to quickly rush to the door to greet you. “Nice to see you again Rei. Missed you,” you added with a giggle. He felt his heart race a bit as you flirted with him. “You too,” he stuttered out. Miri ran between the two of you and wrapped her small arms around your legs. “(Y/N)! Papa Rei, do I get to spend time with them tonight when you’re gone?” Your gaze softened at Rei after hearing Miri call him papa. The more time you spent with him, the more qualities you saw in him to be a good father, even if he was distant and didn’t act like an adult at times. “Yes Miri, we’re going to be out for awhile. Don’t give (Y/N) a hard time.” She nodded with enthusiasm. He gazed at you again, taking in your comfortable sweater that you had on you and your sweats. You didn’t bother dressing up today as you were focused on chores and your homework. You caught on his gaze and chuckled, “I got busy this morning, sorry for not looking my best,” you excused.

He shook his head, “No you look… stunning,” he confessed. You noticed how casual he looked too and imagined that he would be looking like that when talking to you. “So are you,” you smiled. The moment was interrupted by Kazuki swinging his arm around Rei’s neck. “Watch it…’ Rei mumbled. “Let’s go or else we’ll miss the check-in time!” Kazuki exclaimed enthusiastically. You assumed that they were doing some private investigative work tonight. “Oh hey (Y/N) have fun with Miri tonight we’ll be out for awhile!” You waved at him as they walked out the door. “Good luck!” you called out, now turning your gaze towards Miri. “Papa told you where the pudding is! Gimmie!” 

Spoonfuls of pudding later, you put on her favourite TV show for her to watch as you got started on an assignment. You were in the zone before you heard a ‘ding’ from your phone, a notification from Rei. ‘Hope Miri isn’t giving you a hard time.’ It wrote. You smiled and looked at her and replied. ‘Not at all, she’s watching her show and I’m just catching up on some assignments. I miss playing games with you on the couch though :(‘ Miri noticed your preoccupation with your phone. “(Y/N) you’re done with your homework already? Can we play Morio Kart?” You glanced down at her and sighed. “Not yet Miri. Unfortunately I was just got distracted with your papa texting me.” ‘Ding.’ Another notification. “Me too. It’s so boring here at this festival with Kazuki. I wish I could have brought you.’

You smiled at his text, imagining yourself on a date with him there. ‘Me too Rei. I’ll put Miri to bed soon and wait for you to come back. Stay safe ok?’ You put down your phone as Miri was looking at you with widened eyes. “What did my papas say?” she asked curiously. You smiled and shook your head. “Nothing too important, Rei just said that he was bored doing his job. I can imagine that takes a lot of time and patience.” She nodded and turned towards the kitchen. “I’m hungry (Y/N).” You glanced down at your half finished assignment and the kitchen. You suppose dinner couldn’t hurt your progress. 

You served Miri dinner and had some yourself. Kazuki made pad thai, something you really liked and the flavors hit just right. You didn’t know how he knew, but you guessed Miri liked it just as much as you. The only person you’d told that to as of recently was Rei, perhaps he had spilled the beans to Kazuki about your favourite food, how sweet. You took initiative and washed the dishes for them, knowing that it must be tiring coming back from work to doing more chores. Soon after you tucked Miri into bed and read her one of her favourite bedtime stories. Closing the door behind you, you made your way down into the living room to finish your assignment again. Putting in some of your favourite tunes on the TV, you got to work but not before texting Rei that Miri was tucked away in bed and you were going to try to get your assignments done. He left you smiling by writing to you, ‘Be back soon. Things are going well.’ and reacting to your message with a heart. 

You knocked out two assignments before midnight. You wondered when Rei and Kazuki were going to be home, and by this time your eyelids felt heavy and you were quickly losing concentration in your textbooks. You weren’t sure when you passed out but you were softly snoring on the couch when the duo walked inside the flat. Rei’s eyes instantly fell upon you, looking at how the moonlit illuminated your skin and your peaceful expression. Kazuki noticed and whispered to Rei, “I’ll leave it up to you. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” He got a slight smack on the shoulder from Rei. 

Rei quietly made his way next to you, but not before grabbing a blanket from the extra closet they had. He sat down slowly, hoping to not disturb your sleeping state. He draped the soft blanket over you whilst placing a hand on your cheek. He knew that he was in love with you. You made his life so much easier and was there to support him and trusted him enough to babysit his kid and come over to his house on the first day of meeting him. He felt himself smile and let go the angst that he had. He ran his fingers through your locks whilst leaning down and placing a small kiss on your forehead. He didn’t want to leave your side. He wanted to feel your palm in his again and your touch. You stirred in your sleep, making him a bit startled but still caressing your cheek. “Rei…” you mumbled half coherent about what was going on. His gaze softened whilst staring at you, letting himself admire you against the moonlight. He was definitely going to take you on that date to make up for your hard work today.

You shifted as the morning sunlight hit your eyes. Moving around, you felt your back hit against a warm wall and slowly, you realized that there was someone behind you. You gazed down and saw an arm that was draped over you and the sound of quiet breathing behind you. You took it to be Rei instantly. You looked at your mess of papers around the coffee table and realized that you had probably passed out a bit after midnight in their house. You felt a bit guilty for staying over without asking and unintentionally, but you couldn’t help feel a bit flushed in the cheeks as your heartbeat started to race after realizing that Rei was cuddling you.

You saw the blanket over you and realized that he had probably come home to find you passed out on his couch and didn’t want to leave you to freeze in the middle of the night. You smiled, gazing at his mouth half open and messy brown locks that splayed across the couch and his face. Letting yourself feel comfortable in his embrace, you felt him shift and bury his face in the crook of your neck. “Good morning to you too Rei,” you mused. He opened his eyes and found his limbs with yours. He jolted up a bit, startling you. “Ah shit, I thought I was dreaming. Sorry for… that,” he sheepishly stated. You stared at him, realizing that he may have feelings for you too. Fuck it. You closed the distance between the two of you and captured his lips in yours.

You felt his hand cup your jaw and pull you in closer. After a heartwarming kiss, you pulled away and giggled. “I like you a lot Rei, I didn’t mind waking up to you cuddling me this morning. It was so adorable.” He looked down and replied in a hush, “Me too (Y/N), does this make us…” he trailed off. “I’d love to be yours. I’ve had feelings for you for awhile y’know.” He pulled you into another kiss, wrapping his arms around you and embraced your warmth. 

“I’ll take you out on that date, thank you for taking care of Miri and loving me.”

It was a breezy day, shivering as you walked down the street to your lover's apartment. You hadn't heard from him in a couple days and you were starting to get a bit worried. When you had last heard from him, he was a bit preoccupied with Miri as she had caught some sort of cold. You hoped that she was better now and to encourage her spirits you had baked up a batch of brownies that she loved. Rei also loved your treats and you wanted to make him cheer him up as well if he was stressed.

Deciding to give Rei a heads up, you dialed his number, holding onto your phone so it wouldn't slip from your shaky hands with the breeze, anybody could get sick from this weather. He didn't answer as you expected, he hadn't been for the past couple of days. You sighed as you dialed for Kazuki instead. "(Y/N), perfect timing! I was just about to call you because Rei has been super sick and won't come out from the washroom. Might need your help on this one." So that's why he's been radio silent. "I haven't heard from him either, I'm already on my way over don't worry!" You mouthed loudly over the wind. Quickening your pace, you huddled your way over to the flat. 

You knew Rei, you had been with him for quite awhile now, and he would always shy away from asking for help. There was once when he had a sprained wrist from a botched mission and refused help for a week, even with you prying at him to get it checked out resulting in his recovery time to lengthen longer than he would have liked. You weren't sure why until he brought up the fact that he was beaten by this abusive father whenever he would ask for help with physical injuries that he inflicted upon his own son. You grimace at the thought of that man. You were determined to nurse him back to health one way or another, to care for him as you knew he deserved that at the bare minimum. 

Pressing the button on the elevator, you entered the lift, wondering what Rei had come down with. You stopped in front of the apartment and gently knocked on the door. As if on cue, Kazuki let you in and Miri was there to latch onto your leg in a warm welcome. "I made some brownies for you all, are you all better now Miri? Tummy stopped hurting?" You smiled. She hummed enthusiastically. "Thank you (Y/N), I love your brownies!" You turned towards Kazuki. "You can have some too but they aren't as good as yours," you chuckled. "You know I always love your baking (Y/N), I'll save some for Rei too. He hasn't been eating or talking to any of us. I tried to give him food, or rather placed it in front of the washroom door but it'd be there the next morning." He sighed in defeat. "You know what he came down with?" You inquired, already turning the corner to check on your poor boyfriend. "No idea! Think he's been throwing up too," Kazuki called out. 

You gently knocked on the washroom door, hoping to hear a response from Rei. It was radio silent. You sighed as you knocked again, but this time with verbiage. "Rei it's me, can I come in? I've been missing you and heard you're feeling ill." Still nothing. You tried the handle and to your surprise it was unlocked. You stepped inside the room to see your lover curled up beside the toilet, hands clutching his stomach region and shaking. You rushed to his side and gently placed your hand on his shoulder to shake him to consciousness. "Rei, baby, talk to me, we need to get you to a hospital," you stammered. He shook his head as he mustered his strength to take your hand. He was cold, freezing at that. "No... hospital. 'm fine," He mumbled weakly. "Then what else are we supposed to do? I can't sit here and watch you suffer!" You cried out, anxious about his state of being. He was silent as you squeezed his hand and gently rubbed his back. He suddenly tried to sit up as he looked even paler in the face and grasped onto the toilet seat. You watched him hurl into the bowl as you gently patted his back. "I'm sorry I didn't know to come any sooner love," you mumbled.

You stood up to get him a washcloth and soaked it in water to cleanse the corners of his mouth. "Do you know what you're sick with?" You asked him quietly. He shook his head. "How about symptoms?" He shifted to lean on you and rest his head on your shoulder. "Throwing up, nauseous... haven't been able to eat, stomach hurts, 'm really tired," he whispered. You ran your fingers through his tangled messy locks as you listened. "Sounds like a stomach bug, but it'd be better to go to at least urgent care. I can't get you the meds you need over the counter," you hummed. "What's the last thing you ate?" "Leftover pasta two days ago..." He shifted into your warmth. You wrapped your arms around him as he buried his face in the crook of your neck. 

"Let me get you a blanket Rei and some water, you're dehydrated from throwing up so much," you observed as you saw the redness of his chapped lips. You felt him tighten his grip on your sweater as he silently conveyed that he didn't want you to leave. You softly planted a kiss on his forehead. "I'll be right back I promise." You leaned him upright against the wall as you quickened your pace out the door to grab him a blanket and other necessities. You ran down the stairs, skimming over the couch to grab a spare blanket and to the kitchen to grab a glass for liquid. "So what's the verdict?" Kazuki inquired. "Stomach bug... do you know anything about leftover pasta that he ate a couple days ago?"

Kazuki looked towards the rack of dishes. "I made a ton pasta like a week ago and had to be out of town for a couple days. I just washed up everything this morning. You think he left it out and ate from it?" It all made sense now, of course he would. You lightly facepalmed as you mumbled, "He was probably too busy with Miri and never put it back in the fridge, and chicken can't be left out for over a day," you sighed as you filled the glass with water and grabbed a liquid powder from the pantry that enhanced hydration. You were glad you bought some during a night of drinking you had with the boys, definitely coming in handy now.

You filed through the medicine cabinet, squinting to read through the names of the miscellaneous medication that was thrown in there. You found some anti nausea medication that wasn't past its expiration date and a bottle of painkillers and rushed back up the stairs to Rei's side. He had his head down and his knees tucked to his chest by the time you were back by his side. You draped the blanket over him as you placed the glass of water by his side. "Drink this, it'll help I promise. And here's a pill to help you with your nausea," you whispered. He lifted his head to gaze at you, his eyebags more prominent than ever as he looked exhausted and sickly. He obliged without saying anything, gulping down the water as if he had been on the brink of dehydration. “I also brought painkillers so let me know if you need one okay?” He nodded after gulping down the water. 

You sat next to him again on the cold washroom floor, gazing at his fragile form as he was gazing down at the floor. “You’ll get sick if you leave out leftovers for a couple days Rei, you were stressed out taking care of Miri while Kazuki was away?” You asked, taking his hand in yours. He nodded. “I forgot, was really hungry while playing my game… so I ate what was in front of me,” he mumbled. You grazed your thumb across the top of his hand feeling his warmth ever so slowly come back. “Call me next time if you need help okay? Whether you’re sick or stressed, just talk to me. I was so worried when you weren’t responding,” you spoke out. He let out a sigh and averted your gaze. “Sorry… not used to asking for help,” he confessed.

You moved your hands up to caress his arm, you knew how much he loved your physical touch, even if he never admitted it out loud. “If I asked, I’d just get rejected… beaten… hurt. I’m tired of it,” he huffed out. Your heart shattered at his words. “Not with me, or Kazuki. We were worried about you. We wouldn’t do that to you Rei,” you comforted. “Always been told to… do it myself.” “Not anymore, you can rely on us, your real family,” you smiled. You felt him relax a bit, letting himself lean against your touch. “Let’s go to the urgent care yeah? Getting those antibiotics will help you feel better much sooner,” you asked, hopefully persuading him this time. He fell silent before squeezing his hand around yours, finally giving in. “Okay.” 

You could tell he was a bit anxious going to the hospital, he hadn’t been raised up going to them and never voluntarily went when he had a physical injury. Kazuki was surprised to see you holding him and exiting out the door. “Papa!” Miri cried, rushing to Rei’s side. He gently ruffled Miri’s hair as he leaned on you for support. “Your Papa isn’t feeling well Miri, but we’re taking him to the hospital now so he can get better and play with you really soon!” You informed her. “Awh… feel better Papa Rei!” She empathized. You promised to stick by Rei’s side that entire day, from the car ride to the waiting room, holding his hand and letting him rely on you while the two of you waited for his name to be called. You went in with him when his name was called, explaining to the nurse everything that he was feeling as he didn’t do well talking in such settings. As you suspected, he did have a stomach bug and was promptly prescribed antibiotics for his case. 

“So I take these in the morning, and at night?” He asked, squirting at the letters in the packaging. You nodded, “Yup, and you have to remember or else they won’t work like they’re supposed to.” “Hm I’ll try… might forget though,” he mused. You stopped walking and turned towards him, “So does that mean I need to stay over until you’re healthy again?” You saw a half-smile form on his face. “I wouldn’t mind.” Of course you’d do that for him, you wouldn’t let him get as sickly as he was that morning again if he were to remain in your sights. “Well first things first, you’re not sleeping in the tub, we wouldn’t want you being in more pain than you already are now right?” “Fine…you’d have to sleep next to me then,” he mumbled the last part. You felt a grin coming on your face. “What was that?” you pressed, wanting him to repeat himself. He kept his gaze on the floor, trying not to hide the fact that he was flustered. 

The anti-nausea pills had already kicked in by the time the two of you arrived home. You heard his stomach grumbling as you stepped over the threshold into the flat. The apartment was oddly silent, Kazuki must have gone out with Miri for an evening stroll or something of the sort. “You think you can eat something now?”  You asked, wanting him to ingest something before taking his medication. He nodded slowly, “Maybe a little…” You made your way over to the brownies you brought over earlier as there was nothing else ready to eat. You grabbed one and brought it to Rei, holding it up to his mouth. He took a small bite, feeling a bit uplifted as he remembered the taste of your baking that he missed, it was the first time he felt as if he could consume something in days. “It’s so yummy,” he mumbled, taking another bite. As much as you didn’t want his first meal after days to be straight sugar, it was better than nothing.

After he was done, the two of you made your way up to his bedroom, knocking the rolled up foam off of the bed, a dummy that he had set up there when he slept in the tub. “You want a change of clothes?” you asked him, preferably he sleep in something comfier than a jacket and skinny jeans. He nodded and you made your way over to his wardrobe to pick out some comfortable pajamas for him. “Thank you for today (Y/N),” he mumbled, trying to express his sentiment towards you. You walked back over to him as you lifted his chin with your finger. Making eye contact with him, you spoke softly, “Of course Rei, I love you. I never want to see you like that again.” You felt his hand snake towards the back of your head, pulling you closer to him to seal off the distance with a soft kiss. He didn’t initiate the physical contact often, so you felt accomplished when he pressed his lips to yours. 

You ran your fingers through his hair, melting more into the kiss. He finally pulled away after he was breathless, staring at you with a messy smile on his face. “Sleep with me,” he mumbled. “I will I’m not leaving don’t worry, but you need to take your pill first and get you out of these clothes.” He obliged as you lifted his shirt off, exposing his toned figure and the scars that came along with it. He’s so beautiful, you thought as you handed him a soft pajama shirt to put on. He shimmied out of his pants next as you handed him some bottoms, reaching out to the nightstand to grab one of the pills he was prescribed. He was so comfortable around you, and he felt a bit more okay being vulnerable now after today. You handed him the pill and a glass of water, making sure he took the medication before setting it back on the nightstand for him.

You flicked the light off as he made his way under the blankets and sheets, staring at you as he waited for you to come next to him. “You feel better now baby? No more pain or nausea?” You whispered to him, sliding your figure next to him. He nodded as he wrapped his arms around you, having a bit more strength to give you affection now. “So much better,” he mumbled. You planted kisses on his forehead and cheek, seeing a flush of pink on his cheeks illuminated by the moonlight. You let him find shelter in the crook of your neck as he pressed himself closer to you, curling up as he usually did in the tub but against your figure. It had been a long day for you too, resulting in your soft snores filling up the silent room before he could be fully unconscious. He felt so lucky to have you, to have you nurse him back to health, someone he could let his guard down around. 

“Love you too,” he reciprocated, letting himself slumber in your grasp, hoping to have a fast recovery so he could take care of you too.

It was already very mind-numbing when Miri was ripped away from you, your lover, and his partners’ arms. Even more so when Rei announced that he was going back to his father in the New Year. 

The days following Miri’s departure were quiet, slow, and everyday you kept on yearning for the joy back. Specifically, what were you to do without her around anymore, you were hired on almost a year prior to be her babysitter but developed a bond with Kazuki and Rei. During that time, you had fallen for Rei and he reciprocated those feelings but the two of you never defined the relationship, but you knew that you were his and vice versa. 

With that, his departure stung just as hard as Miri’s weeks prior. The night before he was set to leave, he sat next to you on the signature red couch in the middle of the living room, squeezing your hand for comfort in silence as you let the tears fall. 

“Is there… no other way?” you managed to breathe out, stifling through tears. He let his gaze fall upon your sullen body. 

“Sorry… Thanks for everything (Y/N)... I mean it. I…” he let out in a shaky breath.

“I love you too,” you finished, looking up with your tear-filled orbs to gaze at him. He shifted his gaze away from your look to avoid shedding tears himself, but you could tell he had almost broken down, quivering his lips as he pressed them against yours in a last ditch effort to savor you before letting go. His warmth stayed around your form until morning when it dissipated as he left one last peck on your slumbering form before turning away. It was for the better, for your safety.

You let yourself slumber until an ungodly hour, knowing that he was no longer by your side. Your heart ached to be with your lover and to have Miri’s cheerful presence back. Shifting to wipe the sleep from your eyes, you glanced at the coffee table that had a picture thrown upon it, an image of yourself with Rei during one of your first dates together. You clutched at it, pressing it close to your heart as you let more tears slip from the corners of your eyes. 

He had left the last piece he had of you behind. 

The apartment was quiet, you had no idea how long you sat there unmoving and didn’t look around until you felt Kazuki’s presence next to you. “(Y/N)... have you eaten anything?” his voice softly called out. You shook your head as you finally slipped the picture of you and Rei in your wallet. You felt his palm trace the small of your back, giving you pats of comfort. 

“I miss him Kazu… I miss Miri too,” you managed to utter out. He let out a sigh while glancing in your direction. 

“I do too. C’mon let’s walk outside for some fresh air and to get you something to eat.” You silently obliged, following his figure to the door, knowing that a distraction could get you through the rest of the day. 

You wondered how Rei was doing, if his father was treating him tolerably. 

You walked in silence with Kazuki as he led you to Yadorigi where he had intentions of asking Kyutaro for more jobs as his means of distraction. That only led to the older man throwing a packet of cash in front of Kazuki as he was not in the right mindset to complete a job without butchering it. You let out a chuckle, your first smile through the day as you watched the two of them bicker. 

“To cheer you up (Y/N),” Kyutaro said warmly as he slid you your favourite drink, a strawberry lemonade. You felt a pang in your chest again as you remember that it was Rei’s favourite drink too and the two of you would share all the time when visiting Kyu. 

“Thanks,” you mumbled as you sipped on it, trying to shove the memories out from your head. 

Having a bit more energy, you kept up with Kazuki’s pace as evening started to fall. You gazed at the shimmering lights beyond the horizon line as you crossed the bridge with the older man back to the apartment. Your dazed trance was broken with the sharp trill of a ringtone coming from Kazuki’s phone. 

“Kazuki where are you right now?” 

Rei…?

Your heart rate started to increase as you heard your lover’s voice. “Uh, on my way back from Kyu’s?” 

“Go to Miri, now! Please! Hurry!” 

You turned your head in shock as you heard Rei’s panicked voice. The two of you turned in unison to run the opposite direction as Kazuki dialed Kyu’s number. 

“Leave something behind?” 

“Kyu-chan, can you contact Miri’s mom?! Tell them to get out of there now!” Kazuki huffed over the phone. Shit. This was not good news. Miri is in danger.

You felt the blood rushing to your head, heartbeat pounding in your ear as you suspected that Rei’s father had something to do with this sudden change in plans. You followed Kazuki, ignoring the tightness in your chest that began to form with your sprit to match the man’s speed. At least Misaki’s building was a short distance away. 

Kazuki burst in the apartment with his gun drawn to be met face to face with Ogino Ryo. You stayed behind, having no formal training with fighting. You grimace as you witnessed Ogino exert his force onto your friend. You managed to slip into the apartment unnoticed, grabbing a knife from the kitchen in the meanwhile as your main goal was to get to Miri’s side. You felt your heart drop as you saw Misaki hunched over in a pool of her own blood. She noticed your presence as she weakly gestured a limp finger towards the closed off room. 

“Miri… in there…” she mouthed.

You opened the door to slide yourself in without drawing attention to the two men fighting, letting out a sigh of relief as you saw Miri’s sleeping form. You slid the knife in your back pocket as you quietly shuffled around the room to hastily pack Miri’s things, knowing that your duty as a caretaker was to get her to safety in that moment. You froze as you heard a gunshot and heard Kazuki grunting. You held your breath as you heard Miri shuffle. If she were to wake up and find her Papa and Mama gone, she would be utterly devastated and who knows how she would recover from that. 

You breathed out a sigh of relief as you glanced at her sleeping form, unresponsive to the commotion outside. You felt tense again as the noises stopped and a set of footsteps could be heard closing into the room you were in. You held your breath as the doors were swung open with force, practically ripping them off their hinge. Ogino stood towering over you and Miri. He relentlessly aimed his handgun at Miri’s sleeping body. 

“No!” You shouted in a fit of fury, throwing yourself in front of her to be a shield for any incoming bullets. A fiery numbing feeling was shot through your flesh as you collapsed on the ground. The adrenaline was pumping through your veins as you prepared to take more bullets from Ogino, but to both of your surprise, the cartridge was empty. He grunted as he turned back around to Kazuki. You felt your chest burning and the smell of flesh illuminate the air as you found the will to move next to Miri. 

The blaring sounds of sirens closing into the apartment was never as relieving as that moment as you heard Kyu’s voice. 

“This is the police, drop your weapons!” 

Ogino shot a glare at you and Kazuki as he spat out, “Look after these two in their final moments. Cower in fear in the meantime.” He leapt from the balcony as he made his escape as Kyu entered the apartment after his stunt. 

His eyes widened as he witnessed Misaki barely holding onto life on floor in a pool of her own blood as well as Kazuki who got shot by her side, yelling at her to keep hanging onto life for Miri’s sake. The pain hadn’t kicked in from your wound yet, but you scooped Miri up, stumbling out to place her in Kyu’s possession.

“That bastard left…” you managed to croak out before your vision got hazy and everything went dark. 

The next thing you knew, you were in a rumbling vehicle barreling towards the unknown. You groggily whispered out, “Where are we?” 

You were too quiet to be heard as man in the front kept driving on as the other shifted in his seat tending to his wounds. The adrenaline wore off but your vision was still fading as you noticed your blood soaked bandages through your sweater that Kazuki must have wrapped around you. You twitched as you tried to sit up, the pain from your bullet wound finally settling in. It felt like you had fallen from a five story building and you felt your body stiffen up but also that burning sensation was still there. You weren’t sure what state of injured you were in, if it was even a clean shot or not, but all you could do was trust that your friends would take you to safety. What a hellish day. 

You let your consciousness fade away again until you heard a faint sound call your name through your haze. “(Y/N)... (Y/N) please…” 

The warm coloured light illuminated the room as a familiar face appeared in your vision. The loose hair piece dangling from dark coloured locks with a worrisome look added to the ache in your chest. “Rei,” you mumbled, reaching for his hand. You felt his warmth over your cold digits as you realized the state you were in. You weren’t sure if the hit was a fatal one or how much blood you had lost, but you knew you were safe in his arms. You saw him lower his head as he grit his teeth. Unbeknownst to you, a tear trickled down his face. “I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you.” 

“Rei… never apologize. Please continue to take care of Miri, and support Kazu,” you uttered out with the little strength that you had. 

“No, shut up, don’t say that!!” he raised his voice. You shook your head, everything felt numb. 

“All I ask is that, you don’t forget about me and help Miri live a long happy life,” you smiled weakly. You slid your hand down to your wallet and tugged at the photo that Rei left you earlier that day. Your breath hitched as you struggled, Rei took notice. You let the photo fall from your fingers onto his as you saw the tears well up in his ducts. “

‘M sorry I left this behind too. I’m done with my father, so please… don’t leave me,” he confided in a whisper. 

“Tell Miri that I’ll always love her like my own, Kazuki that his cooking is the best I’ve ever had…and promise me that you’ll keep on living too, protecting our family.” 

Rei felt his heart shatter. You couldn’t die, you weren’t supposed to, and it was all because of him? Why didn’t Kyu and Kazuki take you to a hospital? He let out a exacerbated sigh and gripped your hand tightly, acknowledging how cold you really are. You now looked so pale, like all the life drained from your face and took away your smile.

 ”Stop it. Our family means that you’re in it with me… I need you with me. Lemme see your wound and change your bandages,” he mumbled, letting a tear slip from his hardened expression. 

You felt his hands gently caress your shoulders and your back, lifting you to inspect your wound. You winced at the onset of pain as you moved any sort of way, feeling the pulsating burning sensation around your wound. His face was drained of colour as he unwrapped your bandages and saw the state of the hit. 

“Kazuki, we need to go to the hospital… NOW,” he yelled out shakily to his partner. Maybe it is worse than you thought.

You tugged at Rei’s sleeve as you felt your vision fading again. “You’re here now… protecting me. It’s okay Rei, I’m just glad… you’re here.” 

“Stay with me, please…” he begged. As gently as he could, he tried to maneuver you to wrap another layer of bandages on to stop the bleeding that continued to pool out. You felt the burning pain again but this time a hundred times worse. Clinging onto Rei for his warmth, you nestled yourself into his form. 

“I love you Rei, it’s okay…” You mustered your strength to press your lips on his one more time before you fell limp again. 

He stared at you blankly in his arms, holding you close to him for a split second until he realized that he needed to get you to a hospital immediately. You had lost a fair amount of blood and the pressure only did so much to stop the bleeding. Unbeknownst to anybody yet, the bullet had not gone through clear and it had hit your aorta next to your heart and lodged up in between the bones your scapula resulting in severe blood loss. You had accepted your fate after jumping in front of Miri, your protective instinct to protect the precious life of the one that you had raised for almost a year with the man that brought you the most joy you had ever been with. 

Rei sat in the back of the car with you, not letting you leave his sight and keeping you in his embrace as you faded in and out of consciousness. Kyutaro was driving as fast as he could, leaving Kazuki back at their safe house to keep an eye out on Miri just in case she wakes up. Rei felt tense, stiff, and anxious that he was going to lose you. He noticed how your breathing became shallower throughout the car ride, and he held his breath knowing you were holding onto dear life. 

He whispered to you, “You’ll be ok. You’ll make it…” but he knew that it was false hope. He intertwined his fingers with yours, feeling almost no warmth from the hands that once held his carefreely. 

Everything felt cold to you now, the pain was long gone and you could only see streaks of light in your vision. All the sounds around you became high pitched and jumbled as you registered that you were being wheeled into an operating room, but that was the last thing that you would remember experiencing. That and Rei’s fleeting touch in your last moments, his figure hunched over your hospital bed as he pressed his lips against your forehead for the last time. The last sensation of his tears dripping onto your face as you fade out for the last time. 

“I love you.” 

“Please (Y/N), I love you,” he croaked out, his voice hoarse cursing at himself when he was alone. 

It had been days since you had entered the hospital, and those days he sat by your bedside watching you. It had been days since he had last eaten anything too or gotten sufficient sleep. When you had been wheeled into the operating room, they had done their very best to supply you with blood and announced a triage to supply you with the best care as per Rei’s request. Ultimately, the bullet had struck a vital connection and performing surgery on that area had a high risk of failure, but it was either that or wait for the body to heal itself which was also a gamble that the odds were not in favor for. 

He watched as you were hooked up to machines, breathing through technology, and all he could do was feel anger at himself for not standing up for his family earlier and the wrath of his father, causing him to lose the love of his life as a consequence of his actions. He grit his teeth as he heard a concerning sound, the high pitched flat lining indicator that you were now gone. All he could do was stare, stare at your lifeless form now laying beneath him. In his hand held the picture of the two of you together, a prized possession that could never be recreated now. He let the tears fall down as the hospital staff rushed in, aware that not even the highest dose of epinephrine or electric shock could bring your body back to how it used to be, or resurrect the smile that you held as you looked at him lovingly. 

Being functional was an overestimate for Rei, but a lot can change in ten years, including the last promise that he made to you. He started off his day, doing simple hand curls and exercises to regain control back in his right arm that he blew out as a means of protecting his family from his wretched father. He was at a point where he could hold items and perform basic chores and even lift his arm above his head again.

He slicked his hair back in a ponytail as he used to, letting two loose strands dangle down in front of his face. He smiled to himself, remembering how it felt when you tied his hair back for him, the feeling of your delicate digits run through his scalp. How could he forget. He gazes longingly at the picture of the two of you at his bedside table every morning and night. Next to it was a family photo with you holding Miri, smiling next to him and Kazuki being silly on the other side of you. He had many more photos of you covered in his room, but those two were his favourites. 

It still hurt, it hurts everyday knowing that his bloodline robbed him of his happiness, your happiness, and most importantly your life. The promise that he made  to you was enough to keep him going, and to propel him to become a capable individual that took care of his partner and daughter. He stepped out into the diner that he and Kazuki now owned, ready to make Miri her favourite breakfast as it was her first day of high school. Oh how the time flies by.

Your strength was what made him continue, to him, your memory will carry on.

I'm gonna ramble on with my buddy daddies finale predictions so don't mind me I just wanna throw my thoughts out there. Feel free to read below under the cut bc its semi-lengthy and contains spoilers up to ep 11.

As for actual careers what if Kazuki actually becomes a comedian? I could totally see that hehe, not sure how Rei would go into the oil business but hey becoming true to what Kyutaro told Miri I guess.

Judging from the preview at the moment, I have high speculation that Ogino will be killed and the main protags even Kyutaro will be safe. Not sure about Shigeki though, I was thinking about the ideal of Rei assassinating his own father but I'm not 100% sure how things will go down in the brawl at the manor but Ogino will def go down.

Not sure if the finale will touch on Miri asking about her mom either, but they might tell her that she actually passed due to her cancer instead of a brutal murder from Ogino and Rei's association with it, that'll hurt her so bad :( Maybe in the future they would say something.

I really doubt this prediction will happen but if Shigeki doesn't die, maybe the Suwa organization will be stopped and turned over to the cops since they already were aware about what happened with Misaki and Ogino I'm assuming, but that would mean our boys might get jail time too so I feel like that one is super unlikely but a way to take down the Suwa organization with Shigeki alive I guess.

A prediction I had before was that Misaki actually didn't die and they are able to co parent Miri with her but judging from the trailer today it might make sense that her death is finalized and 'to be expected' by a more serious end.

After watching the trailer this prediction I had is faltered but originally I was thinking about Kyutaro sacrificng himself to protect the two since he's proven that he does care about their lil family from the previous ep. I was thinking he'd be sacrificed in the final shoot out but who knows, he seems cozy in the trailer.

Anyway Rei is me rn waiting for the finale I'm so excited and I'm so happy to be a part of this fandom and make art/writing/posts for it <3 I haven't felt this much serotonin ab anything for awhile. 🖤
