i'm very sorry for what i'm about to say but i am the worst person in the world to get fic recs from. 😔 i did the bulk of my fic reading in 2021 and i am not the person i was back then so can't tell whether the fic i liked is actually good. 😔😔😔 so here's a selection of fic i read more recently and really enjoy for characterisation reasons or otherwise

Uncertainty Principle by JayneL (archive-locked) is a post-s8 fic that manages to pack a lot into only 1.5k words

We always were but never knew it by frightfullyrude could be described as a 4x01 rescue fic? but that wouldn't do it justice at all. this one is better read on a laptop than a phone btw!

the anatomy of flightless birds by cowlovely is a really warm, cozy post-s8 fic told from cas' pov.

Ohhhhhh boy u don't know what u have just strapped urself into

SO! Hector is the oldest of his 4 siblings. In order, it's: Hector (born in 1939), Eduardo (born in '40 or '41 I haven't decided yet), Ricky Jr. (1945), and Alaina & Alberto (twins, born in '47). They're pictured below in order

Hector is an oldest sibling to a T. However, he didn't get to exert that for long in his child and teenhood. He's put away in '56 and so his youngest siblings grow up mostly without him, leaving Ed as the default oldest. And Ed is more than happy to abuse that title. He's always touting that "he's the oldest, what he says goes". He's the one who heads the business (more aptly the seedlings of a future crime organization) and he often calls the shots. Ricky is his right hand man of sorts and effective co-leader but Eduardo is an extreme narcopath; at the end of the day, he needs to be recognized as the boss.

Like I said, too, Hector's away for nearly two decades. So his dynamic with the siblings is incredibly... vacant. And not long after he's released, it's replaced with fear. And they thought Ed was a handful to deal with.

Hector loves his family the way Logan Roy loves his children. And that's something that he and Ed, for all their problems, had in common. They like their family the best when they're in their designated roles and when they themselves are in their set place (above everyone).

Since we're talking specifically about Hector's dynamic with the sibs, I'll keep it brief and give an overview:

Hector and Eduardo: Two children fighting over one toy. One's solution is to steal it away and the other's is to break, because if he can't have it, no one can.

Hector and Ricky: Ricky's a bastard but he's a bastard who's loyal to the family's needs. The "yes" man.

Hector and Alberto: Alberto gets a pass for being weak on account of his piety. He does what Hector says and that's what matters. On account of him being the babiest brother, there is more affection for him, but again, Berto is good at keeping his head down

Hector and Alaina: Alaina may as well not exist to Hector. She was already gone after he got out, so that's the truth.

There's a lot, lot, lot, LOT of history with these siblings. The many different dynamics btwn different sibs and sib groupings say a lot about them and their upbringing. And by 2002, all Hector's brothers and his sister have been out of the picture for various reasons. The man who pushed and pushed and pushed them wonders why he feels a little more hollow.

The thought of cutting Lalo's throat and being done with this whole affair had crossed Nacho's mind more than once.

It was easier said than done when Lalo was looking at him like that.

Lalo was always looking at him like that: Like he found Nacho amusing, like Nacho was a piece of meat, like Nacho had some sort of value. Nacho knew better.

They were on the road, as they often were, the engine of the Javelin rumbling beneath them. The radio was playing softly, Juan Gabriel's voice  full of longing as he sang Querida. Lalo, Nacho had learned, had incredible luck with choosing radio stations. He always seemed to find the one that would play the best songs to get Nacho lost in his own mind. Por lo que quieras tú más ven, Juan Gabriel was cooing, Más compasión de mí tú ten.

The sun had long since set, leaving the sky black and ablaze with stars. The moon was a sliver of platinum, thin as a blade. It reminded Nacho of Lalo's smile, of the cat-like thing that was focused on him right this very moment. It felt predatory, like Lalo was some frightening jungle cat and Nacho was a tiny mouse trying to hide under a fallen banana leaf.

It was a thrill he wasn't ready to address, and he gripped the steering wheel tighter, doing his best to keep his eyes on the road. His nails pressed into the leather of the steering wheel cover, pressing into the crescent-shaped divots he had been digging into it every time he was relegated to chauffeur duty.

Mira mi soledad, the song continued, Que no me sienta nada bien.

Nacho tried to ignore that, too. His chest hurt. Exhaustion, probably.

Lalo was turned sideways in his seat, talking animatedly about something, gesticulating wildly as he did, as he always did. He talked with his hands a lot. Nacho tried not to think about his hands.

He tried not to think about Lalo at all, if he could help it. He hated Lalo. He hated all the Salamancas. It was harder to hate someone when they were constantly around, though, always chattering away and grinning that Cheshire smile and purring about his plans. The only thing he didn't do was touch, and Nacho hated him for that, too.

The thought of Lalo's strong, calloused hands around his neck had crossed his mind once or twice. They weren't always around his neck, though. He tried not to think about that, either.

"Ignacio?" Hearing his name in Lalo's low, jaguar-purr of a voice sent a shiver of want skittering its way down Nacho's spine. It always did. His knuckles were white as he squeezed the steering wheel, his chewed-down fingernails cutting through the leather cover. "You listening to me, man?"

He wasn't, and he said, "No."

Lalo's eyes lit up when another car passed them. They glittered like chips of obsidian. There was something deeply unnerving about Lalo's eyes. They weren't the gold of a wildcat's eyes, and that felt wrong, somehow. They were bottomless black pits that would suck you down deep and spit out the bones.

Nacho looked away, trying and failing to ignore the heat that built low in his belly when Lalo looked at him that way. It happened more often than he'd like to admit, and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat, keenly aware of Lalo watching him.

"Getting kinda mouthy here lately, huh?" Lalo didn't seemed bothered by it; He seemed amused. He was always amused. Life was a joke to him. It irritated Nacho to no end. "These your true colors, Nachito?"

Were they? Nacho wasn't sure. Lalo brought out the worst in him.

Lalo didn't seem to mind it. He reveled in it. Was he trying to break him?

It was working.
