Gleeful Paintbox Project #5: Previously Unaired Create an outlandish concept for a glee episode

The High School Glee Club Musical Madness Part 2

Kitty tells Artie he has to give her the role of Sharpay and he says he can't just give her the role because she's his girlfriend and he has to be professional cause it's his last play before going to NY, wondering about what will happen with their relationship when he goes away, they sing Right Here, Right Now (in my fantasy world, Artie was a better boyfriend to her and they don't breakup when he leaves) (also I like to think in the end either Tina or Unique got the Sharpay role #justiceforRizzo, just headcanon whatever you want here lol).

Kurt goes to Ohio to see the play and after he tells Blaine his good news, they celebrate dancing but also helping Blaine to practice by singing Can I Have This Dance 🥺 (This is my favorite gif of them dancing cause Kurt looks like some pretty jumping pony and Blaine is just so happy he's happy and I'm ugh 🥺, I already have a full post about this particular song with Klaine btw in last week's paintbox, check that out lol).

Mercedes also went to see the play and she tells Sam he looks good with Marley, that he has to move on and be with her or someone else, but Sam says he can't and they sing You Are The Music In Me.

I Don't Dance- Jake and Blaine

The only actual song we see of the play lol (Kinda like in Grease where we only saw 2 actual songs of the play, and I kinda went on an song limit for each post cause I didn't wanna make it too long, also I know this is from HSM2 but I'd like to think the play they did was a mix between the 3 movies but cutting stuff of course, also because Blaine is Ryan and Jake is Chad so, also a treat for the Blake shippers).

The second song we kinda see of the play gets cut in half because at mid We're All In This Together (of course this one had to be here but I've reached my limit so I imagine this getting interrupted while Tina is singing because she never wins anything, sorry Tina stans, but it's not Glee without this I guess, but my episode headcanon is also a little choose your own story so you can change this lol) Sue boicots the show because they didn't give Becky the role of Sharpay (I ran out of creativity to think how she interrupts it, feel free to give ideas).

Rachel also went to see the play and Finn wants her to stay but she tells him she got a role and has to go because she belongs in NY (kinda like the scene in Glease) they sing Gotta Go My Own Way.

After Rachel leaves him, Finn sings a mashup of Troy's dramatic crisis songs Bet On It/Scream (and yes I image the hallways of the school also rotate lmao).

Finn goes back to college (I imagine Finn and Will intertwine weeks with the Glee club so he didn't left completely) and Puck tries to cheer Finn up and tells him he should get over Rachel and they sing The Boys Are Back.

Everyday- New directions with Hummelpezberry in NY

They perform this as the ending song for Will while the ones in NY celebrate for their roles. (I didn't know what else to do with Santana besides Fabulous sorry, but give me ideas as to what she is celebrating).

Will Jake and Marley get back together?

Will Quinn tell Rachel how she feels?

Is Klaine ever gonna get married?

Will Finchel, Brittana and Samcedes return?

What I post: Mostly Glee! Some Fall Out Boy, Taylor Swift, stuff about math, various memes, and a few other fandoms slip in occasionally too.

Other blogs: I'm an admin of kurtbastianarchive and gleesource, and a member of gleeful-paintbox-project 🥰 I also technically have a couple other inactive sideblogs, one of which was going to my Glee sideblog when I got into the fandom before I just gave up and used my main instead, but I'm not going to bother listing any of them since I don't use them anymore.

Do I get asks: Not often, but occasionally! And people are always welcome to send me asks (although I may be a bit slow to reply depending on what it is).

Followers: 840. It was 841 yesterday, guess someone got sick of me lolol

Average hours of sleep: ummm like 6 through the week probably? More on weekends.

Instruments: I could play clarinet really well once upon a time but that was like... 12+ years ago. So currently, no.

What am I wearing: Pajamas lol. I work from home so I am usually wearing pajama bottoms at the very least 😅

Dream job: My dream job is not having to work 😂 but honestly I'm not sure that I have one, my focus is more on just making sure I have a job that I don't dislike and that pays me enough to afford the things I want outside of work.

Dream trip: I'm not really a traveller so I'm not sure I have a good answer for this either LOL maybe Hawaii? Or New Zealand? I'd also love to go up north to one of the territories in the winter.

Favourite songs: Hmm I'm not sure I can really pick favourite overall songs tbh. My favourite Fall Out Boy songs are Young Volcanoes and Lake Effect Kid, so let's go with those.

Gleeful Paintbox Project Week 5: Previously Unaired ↳ deleted scene that should have been kept in

For this week’s Paintbox prompt I thought it was time I do something I haven’t before for the project and write some meta. Because I see “deleted scenes” and there are a few that immediately spring to mind but perhaps none more so than Kitty and Marley in 4x09 Swan Song. So indulge me as I bemoan the loss of this two minute scene which could have done so much for their characters, if only they kept it in.

So we all know what leads us here, it’s Kitty’s continuous gaslighting of Marley into developing an ED which leads to her fainting at Sectionals and costing the New Directions the competition. Throughout the episode Swan Song, the characters struggle with reconciling this. What we don’t see is how Kitty, who is at least partially responsible reacts.

Kitty started out as a new gen Quinn/ love child of Quinntana: a bitchy Cheerio making the “main” girl’s life difficult at best and a living hell at worst. When she joins the New Directions following Grease, we don’t get the sense that it’s because of innate love of the arts. If anything, other than the show needing her there to keep her part of the narrative, it’s to further prey on Marley. But then Sectionals happen and Marley faints, and Kitty freaks out. For the first time, we don’t see her a conniving bitch hell bent on making others’ lives miserable. She’s scared. She stutters and doesn’t know what to say when Santana confronts her. She’s seen Marley collapse because of what she’s been doing to her and she doesn’t know how to react.

At some point later in the episode, we would have had this scene. Kitty’s quietly crying in the bathroom and Marley, open-hearted as ever, approaches her with kindness. Kitty immediately snaps back in a manner that we’re only used to from Santana, the very person Kitty couldn’t reply to earlier in her shock. But Marley doesn’t relent and gives Kitty the benefit of the doubt. More than that, she sees right through her. “It’s okay to be sad about Glee Club, you know,” she says to Kitty. Words of both validation and comfort coming from the very person Kitty has hurt on such a vile way. But Marley is willing to put all that aside because she, unlike Kitty, paid genuine attention and noticed that Kitty was enjoying herself. Marley, perhaps before Kitty ever did, realized why she joined the Glee Club after Grease. It wasn’t to be a nuisance - or not just, anyway. It was a genuine joy, like Kitty spiritual predecessors Quinn and Santana eventually grew to realize.

Once again, Kitty snaps back instead of welcoming the emotional connection. But it isn’t as snarky as previously, there’s more emotional truth in what she’s saying now. This is not just her being cruel now, Kitty really is wondering if Marley is for real. And as she lists all she’s done to the girl, she knows it can’t be real. Because she’s been awful and she knows it, so how the hell could Marley possible approach her with kindness. Where’s the catch? Kitty keeps listing things and it’s as if she herself is truly letting the gravity of her actions sink in. Marley was hurt; she could have been even more seriously hurt. Kitty knows that and so when Marley is all nice and understanding it just makes her more frustrated because I think she knows, deep-down or perhaps not so much, that she doesn’t deserve it.

The thing is, that’s not Marley’s worldview though. She could lash out at Kitty and rightfully blame her, yeah. But Marley’s nice persona isn’t a front, the whole good girl actual sunshine thing isn’t a gimmick. Whether Kitty can believe it or not, she is that nice. Because Marley has a past of people judging her for things way beyond her control, like her mother and her background, and instead of letting it make her bitter she’s choosing to be kind. She shows understanding where it would be very fair of her to either ignore Kitty entirely or be angry. Instead, she offers a space for Kitty to be vulnerable.

The response is, predictably, for Kitty to put her walls further up. But Marley questions, that, too, and there’s a visibly change in Kitty’s demeanor as she finally gives in. Fine, wanna hear it? So Kitty gives her reasons. She reveals her insecurities, gives Marley a little something in her vulnerability. And revealing that she did feel threatened doesn’t excuse what Kitty did, of course. Just because she feels threatened doesn’t justify going way too far in teenage shenanigans and actively hurting someone in such a messed up way. It’s not right, it’s far from okay. But here it is anyway.

Marley, her being another insecure teenage girl focuses on the admission that Kitty felt threatened by her. And then comes Kitty’s most important admission, the one that reveals that yes, she knew how messed up it all way and no, none of her own issues can excuse any of it. But instead of being some 16 year-old evil mastermind, she was being a stupid kid with it all.

You weren’t supposed to get hurt.

Kitty soaks in the shock of Marley fainting mid-performance and the shock of everyone gathering around her in the choir room. The shock of Santana calling her out and all that weight of her actions suddenly crashing down on her. But she’s still on the defensive, of course, because it will take her a while yet to actually apologize for those actions. So instead of taking full accountability, she does the 16 year-old thing and doubles down. Well, you weren’t supposed to get hurt. Have you seen yourself? How should I have known you’d believe all that crap and take it too far.

It’s a moment of understanding between the two despite the lack of an actual apology. Marley realizes that Kitty is just as insecure as she is, and that she’s actually jealous in some ways. Kitty takes the first step towards admitting her fault because she’s forced to realize that Marley shares her insecurities and that playing with people like this has dire consequences.

In the end, we return to Marley seeing past the bitchiness and excessive snark. Now with a new perspective on Kitty, Marley tries the kind approach once again. She validates Kitty’s talent and offers a compliment to counterbalance Kitty’s own insecurities. And because of this small moment of connection they’ve had, Kitty now admits that she is sad about Glee Club and takes at least some accountability. Marley, ever the optimist looks on the bright side and extends an offer to Kitty to practice together for their supposed last performance. It’s a moment of forgiveness despite the lack of an apology. Kitty snaps, again, still not ready to fully accept all that kindness and not fully trusting it.

But even though Marley looks disappointed and leaves defeated, there’s been a shift in their dynamic. Kitty’s small but significant follow-up, “but thanks for asking” is the potential for their future. Maybe they can heal from this and move forward, now knowing more about each other and the insecurities they share, the ones they haven’t considered before. It’s an excellent scene that moves them from their previous dynamic into something new and bridges the gap many felt because of its ultimate absence in the episode.

It’s a scene of two characters, two girls understanding each other a little bit more and it’s bonkers to me that it was cut. Even without this scene we have Kitty finally apologizing in Shooting Star but do you see how it reads as kinda hollow without the context of this heart-to-heart right after Sectionals? The cutting room floor is a necessary place in a writing process but this one was written very well, filmed with two great actresses who conveyed exactly what they needed to, and would have added some much-needed depth to two new characters the audience was still undecided on.
