how the cup holds the tea
Scott, Stiles, a manuscript, a dog, a flan, and a ring. | 4.2k, read on ao3
written for @scilesweek 2022, day 6: life post-canon
It’s been seven months since a new supernatural creature made itself known in Beacon Hills, and Scott is spending the morning making Stiles breakfast in bed. It’ll more be like breakfast-in-chair, since Stiles fell asleep at his desk again last night working on his manuscript. Sometimes he reads paragraphs, even full chapters out to Scott, who always feels guilty when he dozes off in the middle of them but it’s not his fault Stiles’ voice is so soothing. Or that his manuscript is so boring. Scott hadn’t really thought about the process of turning a PhD thesis into a published book until Stiles mentioned he was going to do it, but if he’d imagined it at all it would’ve involved a lot less editing and a lot more, like, picking a cool font for the front cover, or whatever. Which is why, Scott supposes, he’s a veterinary nurse, and Stiles has his doctorate in linguistics.
So Scott’s making breakfast: scrambled eggs, the way Stiles likes it, with milk and salt and pepper and just a little bit of sour cream. Every time they buy a tub it goes off before they can use it all, but Scott’s found a recipe for a sour cream and strawberry flan he wants to try, so he’s optimistic this time round. And Stiles likes strawberry anything.
He takes the eggs, and the toast made with the fancy sourdough from the new bakery down over on Mountview, and a glass of orange juice without pulp because Stiles can’t stand it when the bits get between his teeth, to their bedroom. With Stiles on a stipend that only barely covered groceries all they could really afford was this tiny one-bedroom, with a leaky faucet in the sink they’ve called three different plumbers about. They have a double bed that’s probably too small for them, although Stiles likes to curl up when he sleeps and Scott’s gotten used to his feet dangling over the bottom edge. There’s a wardrobe with half their clothes squished onto hangers and the other half dumped on the floor and a mirror stuck with dumb polaroids and a dresser with photos of Allison and Stiles’ mom and the aforementioned desk Stiles is slumped over in a way that gives Scott back pain just by looking at him. He puts the tray on the dresser and goes back into the kitchen to grab the heat pack from the microwave just before the timer dings, and returns to the bedroom after he’s wrapped it in a tea towel.
“Stiles.” Scott nudges him awake. Stiles lifts his head and makes a face, one hand going to the small of his back. Scott kisses the corner of his eyebrow where an unfortunate crop of small red pimples have made their home and hands the heat pack over.
“Oh thank god.” Stiles takes it. “I love you.”

Saying Goodbye to Summer
Tumblr media
The first day of autumn, believe it or not, is September 23rd. As of when I'm writing this post, on September 13th, that's not very far away. I plan on writing a post about fun fall activities and sightings in a future post.
To the readers who are current ALTs, your school (or, schools, if you go to more than one) is probably making the preparations for the following events:
Sports Day
(体育大会/たいいくだいかい or 運動会/うんどうかい)
Culture Festival (文化祭/ぶんかさい)
My understanding is that elementary schools do not have a culture festival, but if your elementary school happens to have one, I'm sure you're busy all the same. I have no knowledge of how high schools work, so I won't be talking about them in much detail here.
If you're fully settled into your school(s) and have a good and regular communication system with your teachers and other staff, then you know when all of these days are or probably will be, and have been making yourself involved in the preparations with both the faculty and the students.
If you're someone who's brand new to the fall trimester of a Japanese school, or you're thinking about being an ALT, you might be very confused or only have a surface-level understanding of what I'm even talking about.
If you're a fresh ALT who started in the spring trimester at the start of the school year, you are probably already well aware that teachers are busy. All the time. They're about to get busier. I'll explain what the two busy events are below:
Sports Day
Tumblr media
Sports Day seems to come before the culture festival for a lot of areas, so let's talk about that first.
If you're from the states, you probably had "field days" as a kid. I did. I'm not sure about other countries, but am intrigued to hear about if you had this at your schools growing up where you're from. The super itchy potato-sack races, three-legged races, etc. That's what I thought this was going to be like, and it's possible that some schools might include that nostalgic "field day", but my school does not.
For junior high school sports days, students practice for a very long while, usually a month or so, to participate in relays, high jumps, boccia, a three-legged race, a class jump rope competition, and a dance competition. I'm actually not sure if I included everything, because they do a lot and I'm not very sporty so I don't know what they're doing half of the time.
So, if you're a new ALT and you're reading this going "wait I didn't know this was a thing" then I highly advise you to ask a teacher about it. Schools don't always include or invite the ALT to their sports days, usually because they don't quite think about it or that they assume you're busy and don't want you to make extra room in your schedule for the school, especially if your school's sports day is on a Saturday.
"On a Saturday?????"
Yes. So make sure you get the date down and, if you're able to, I really hope you go. It makes a wonderful impression on the teachers, as you feel like a more involved teacher, and the kids will remember it. I still have students who bring up last year's sports day (mine was during a normal working day), and they ask me to watch their practice to see if they do better than they did last year.
If you work at multiple schools and the sports days happen to be on the same day, talk to your company or program supervisor (the people who hired you and are sponsoring your visa). They can either A) get in contact with your school and see if one in particular wants you there or B) try to get you scheduled to visit one school in the morning and one in the afternoon. Or, C) leave it up to what you want to do.
It's an all-day event in most cases. You'll be outside, probably in direct sunlight. Keep plenty of water on you, remember your sunglasses if you need them, sunscreen, and wear loose-fitting clothes (and sneakers). You can also find many cooling tools like cooling "neckties" and sleeves that will help you stay cool and away from a potential heat stroke. Feel sick? Let someone know!
Culture Festival
Tumblr media
Culture Festival is my favorite event, I think. Let me tell you why:
First, I'm a music person. I love singing and listening to music as a whole. The culture festival is just that. I think that high schools have a more laid-out and in-depth culture festival. However, lower-level schools will likely keep things simpler.
Assuming that your school's culture festival is after the sports day, you'll probably notice a stark change in scheduling. Now, instead of the kids going outside to practice sports and dances and cheers, they'll likely be taking a class period out of the day to go into the hallways and other classrooms to practice singing.
Yes, this is a chorus contest. Each class chooses from a list of songs that the teachers give them, then they start practicing it as a group. Sometimes they'll start learning it in music class, so they're not completely lost once they start the independent practice.
You'll notice that the teachers will be pretty hands-off during both of these events, but in my case, the culture festival is where the students get the most independence. It's up to them to decide who's going to conduct their "choir", and any students who want to play their class's piano accompaniment will have auditions. This is the kids' time to shine.
I will tell you now, this isn't going to be like a professional choir singing Hallelujah. You're a teacher working with children... they are going to sound like children. Some of them will take this very seriously and put their souls into it, and some are going to use practice time to put their friends into headlocks. Always be supportive of the kids and, if you have a musical background that the school is aware of, you might be asked to listen to the kids and offer advice. I sing, so I do this a lot.
Now, the culture festival is not only singing. At my school, the "chorus contest" portion is done in the morning. We break for lunch, and then the talent show starts. The student council likes to make a fun video to show the school (that is usually very funny), we also have a quiz show in-between acts, and the kids can show their talents. This can involve playing the piano (last year we had a gorgeous Ghibli medley), manzai (Japanese comedy skit), a group of kids who can play instruments play something together, and dancing. So many TikTok dances, so many smiles and laughs.
You'll be in a larger area at your school for this, usually the gym, but every school is a little different, so make sure you have the details from another teacher to make sure you don't end up waiting for everyone in a completely different area of the school.
Words of Advice?
These events are a lot of hard work to prepare. The teachers try to get the scheduling and materials together so that the kids can be independent, learn some teamwork, and make memories that they're going to keep with them for many years to come. While your job as an ALT is, of course, to help facilitate the use of English at school, it's also to give the students a positive connection to the English-speaking world through you. Have fun, be there, be present.
If you have any experiences about these two events on an elementary school scale, I would love to hear them! Thanks for reading, and I'll see you at the next post!

Image taken from this Twitter post from Dear+!

The bonus for purchasing it on this website is a B5 clear file~ I haven't seen it on Animate just yet, so fingers crossed it'll appear on their website soon with another (different) bonus! ❤️💛
Alright, with this amazing news done, let's move onto our takeaways, the long awaited takeaways! Thank you for being so patient with me! 💜
My short life update: currently in week 8 of lockdown and I haven't left my house in a long time other than for exercise or groceries. But I do have my vaccination appointment booked so YAY! 🎉
Here are our takeaways for this chapter:
Oh man, we pick right up from the last page of chapter 13. MINATO, BB, YOU LOOK SO PAINED! 😭
Sensei is the BIGGEST tease... that's all we got of that Minato and Shizuma scene...👀😭
The female staff at the veterinary hospital have really mellowed out! They're not bad, after all. ☺️
Oh dear, Nakajou-sensei, please get better ASAP!
Whoa... did Onodera just...?? I'm starting to think back to that Onodera discussion we had a couple of months ago... 🤔
Poor Shizuma, always roped into Onodera's workplace stuff! IT'S BECAUSE YOU HAVE GREAT PEOPLE SKILLS, SHIZUMA! PROUD OF YOU! 😍🙌
Man, Onodera has a really... blunt way of saying things to her human clients. Wow, brave. 😲
But I will say, Onodera really is good with animals. 🙌
Yet again, I think about that Onodera discussion we had... 🤔🤔
And that’s it for this chapter’s takeaways! For a more detailed breakdown/summary of this chapter, please continue after the cut! There may or may not be a surprise scene (or two) there. Please keep reading if you want to see~  😉✨
Our chapter begins where we left off in chapter 13--Minato pinning Shizuma down on the bed. Shizuma looks up at Minato and reflects on his actions that caused the pained look he is seeing.
Tumblr media
Image taken from this Dear+ Twitter post!
On the next page (title page), the dialogue reads: Shizuma wants to understand what it is about his director (Onodera) that is making Minato uneasy. // However, that beautiful liar hides it well...
(I believe we are taken back to the morning before Shizuma and Minato meet up for their date.)
The title page features Onodera walking back to the clinic, bread in hand, with a cat cozying up on her leg. We are then brought to the clinic's lunchroom, with the female staff and Shizuma on break. The roster in the room shows that Onodera is extremely busy, Nakajou-sensei has afternoon house call appointments, Tatsumi is Nakajou-sensei's support for these appointments, and Shizuma has a half day and finishes in the afternoon in lieu of working on his scheduled day off.
Shizuma asks his coworkers what presents they like from their partners and takes note of their answers. One of the female nurses asks if it's Minato's birthday. Shizuma confesses that their relationship has been affected by the various things happening lately, so he wants to get Minato a gift before seeing him later that day.
Tumblr media
The nurses quickly pick up that the gift is a "tribute" of sorts as this line of work means a lot of missed appointments and dates, and Shizuma confirms their suspicions. While the nurses realise male-male relationships and male-female relationships aren't that different in this aspect, everyone in the lunchroom is alerted to someone shouting Nakajou-sensei's name.
Shizuma and a nurse see Tatsumi with Nakajou-sensei, who has collapsed on the floor. While the staff are concerned about Nakajou's well-being, she brushes it off as a dizzy spell. Before they can help her up, Onodera sweeps her off her feet and carries Nakajou to her (Onodera's) office. While Nakajou asks Onodera to put her down out of sheer embarrassment, Shizuma and Tatsumi are in shock, with Tatsumi commenting on Onodera's manliness in that moment. One of the other nurses gently smacks Shizuma's shoulder and tells the two to grab a blanket and a drink for Nakajou.
In her office, Onodera asks Nakajou why she's been overworking herself to the point of collapsing. The nurse (who gave the gentle smack) very obviously hints to Onodera that it is her fault. As Nakajou calms the nurse by saying that's just how the director is, Tatsumi asks Nakajou about their afternoon appointments. She says she'll be fine to go after a little rest, but the nurse says she mustn't overexert herself.
After a few back and forths about who should go and the clients' needs/personality (picky about the vet, had a pet that doesn't like men, etc), Onodera says she will go. The nurses are shocked and reminisce about all the issues they've had when Onodera interacts with the owners. Tatsumi and Shizuma stand there, and can very clearly imagine those situations happening.
Tumblr media
While Onodera rearranges and informs the nurses of the shift changes to accommodate Nakajou-sensei, Shizuma has a terrible premonition that unfortunately comes true: he is appointed as Onodera's support for the afternoon house calls.
Tumblr media
Wearing a sulky expression, Shizuma packs the necessary equipment in Onodera's car and reminds her that he has a very important engagement that night that he cannot miss, and as such will leave immediately after the house call appointments are done. Onodera bursts his bubble, and tells him to give up on those plans while he can since this is the line of work he's chosen.
As Shizuma reads the client files, he questions Onodera on why he is her support when he's never attended to these clients before. While Onodera tells him that good coordination is important with a physician's support and that he's the only one she can rely on to give her an honest opinion and calm the clients, Shizuma realises that he's basically the mediator between her and the owners. She confirms that this is his strong point, has great expectations for him, and proceeds to drive. Shizuma then reads the patient files at lightning speed, realising there's a threatening 'something' that Minato has sensed, but that's just how the director is. He then vows to make it to their meeting tonight, no matter what.
Tumblr media
The first three house calls, as expected, involve Onodera insulting and angering the owners--Onodera tells the first client that his insistence on seeing Nakajou rather than a 'young' director is having a negative effect on his pet who needs immediate medical care; Onodera offends the second client, inferring from their conversation that her pet's appearance is more important than the need to shave their fur and get an ultrasound done; Onodera accuses the third client of being irresponsible in caring for his exotic animals and asks for more effort on his part. In all three scenarios, Shizuma awkwardly smiles while trying to ease the tension.
The scene skips to Onodera and Shizuma arriving at their fourth and final house call for the day. Just as Onodera explains to Shizuma that she must check a whole host of things at house calls (and indirectly be too blunt about it with the owners), Shizuma asks her to consider the owner's feelings and change when and how she says things. She glares ahead in silence, and Shizuma is just glad that she is now aware of it. He again reminds her to talk with the owner nicely and gently as he probably won't be able to help with the next client as their pet dislikes men. Onodera tells him to just sit in the corner and witness the client become furious while he doesn't help, making him feel slightly guilty for saying that. He is now adament on not helping her.
They reach the owner's home and we meet an elderly woman named Shiratori and her 9-year-old male cat, Tono. Shiratori apologises to Shizuma as her cat doesn't like men. Tono hisses at them as Onodera opens his cage, but is then coaxed into submission by Onodera who covers his vision with a towel and takes him into her lap to calm down. Shiratori and Shizuma are surprised at his sudden docile nature, with Shizuma witnessing how well she deals with animals.
Tumblr media
As Shizuma looks on at Onodera while she completes a check on Tono, he sees she is crumbling at the friendliness and talkative nature of Shiratori, who sings nothing but praise for Onodera and how her family must be proud to have such an amazing daughter. Aiming to ease her troubles and remembering the earlier guilt-trip she gave him, he redirects Shiratori's attention to her broken fly screen and offers to fix that plus everything else that needs repair in her home.
Onodera watches as the two leave the room for a bit before apologising to Tono for ignoring him. Tono looks on at Onodera happily while she asks him how he can live with such a lively human and to tell her his secret to this. She brings him into her arms once more to check his limbs, and as Tono looks up smiling at Onodera, Onodera sees her reflection in Tono's eyes, and both seem to realise something.
Tumblr media
BG Text: Stare...
Suddenly, Shizuma and Shiratori, who are busy fixing the window, hear a loud crash and rush into the room to find Tono atop the cabinet and Onodera on the floor, with her hair in disarray. In the next panel, Tono is shown to be hiding in the bookshelf, looking on irritatingly at the humans. Shiratori apologises to Onodera, who shakes it off and says it's nothing to worry about and no harm's been done.
Shiratori asks if Onodera will fix/tie her hair up again, but when Onodera says her hair tie was broken when Tono used her as a launchpad to get on the cabinet, Shiratori runs to get her a new one. As Shiratori gushes over the 3 piece dopey looking character hair tie set she received as a present from her grandchild (and lets Onodera pick one), a greatly displeased look is plastered on Onodera's face. Shizuma, in shock, notices her displeasure and hopes she just thanks Shiratori for it. And Onodera does, bringing a great big smile to Shiratori's face.
As Onodera and Shizuma leave, Shiratori says she's glad to have talked with Onodera and invites her to come over again. As she says this, we see Onodera looking back with a blank look in her eyes.
Tumblr media
And that’s it for this chapter! THANK YOU FOR READING THIS FAR! 💜 While I was surprised at the lack of Minato in this chapter (Sensei legit is such a tease, LOL 🤣), I'm happy we can learn more about Onodera. Ngl, I'm starting to really question if Onodera is male or female now, given what transpired in this chapter. I guess we shall see in the next one!
I also changed the formatting a bit and removed the bullet points. Please let me know which format is better/easier to read! Ahah!
EDIT: Spelling and grammar checks are done! Didn't change a lot, but hope it reads better! 💜
📢 As always, please support Hinohara-sensei by purchasing her books and CDs! 📢
And please also refrain from resharing these translations and images outside of this post! Thank you for understanding! ❤️💛
There won't be a chapter in next month's (September release) Dear+, so I shall see you in two months for the next chapter (Dear+ November Issue, to be released in October).
As always, stay safe during these turbulent times and look out for each other and for your loved ones! 💜❤️💛

Katy my beloved 🧡
so once you're up and you have time!!
I'm requesting your list of the characters brithdays
anyways good night may your dreams be sweet because it is late for you ✨
Good Morning! It is 8am on a Sunday! and I want to go back to sleep! but I have a train to catch at 9!
So, Birthdays!! I posted about it on Reddit like almost a year ago (the first thing i ever did on reddit, actually!) So I'll copy paste that and change some things because i think I have changed some things since.
So I started this because of my fic series One More New Direction and i went a bit inane due to, like, timelines. so i wanted to give everyone birthdays if they didn't already have them. (and obviously have a note of them all just in case they could be used in the plot)
Here is a screenshot from my timeline google sheets of all of the birthdays (ignore the OCs and the colour coding, it's just me trying to keep track of who is new and who is graduated, this is also why Roderick isn't in this, becasue in my fic he hasn't transfered yet (this is the year between S5a & 6) and Jane hasn't started highschool so that's why she's not on it) and I'll explain them (mostly S2 NDs) under the cut (my reddit comment amended, basically) 💛
I know I missed Blaine but... he's not in my fic as a ND member at all so i didn't give him a birthday just yet because i haven't needed to.
Tumblr media
Puck: Aug 17th 1993 I choose Mark's actual birthday because Glee did that with Kurt so why not the other characters. - I see Puck as being the second oldest after Kurt, just based on vibes, so Mark's birthday fit here.
Rachel: Dec 18th 1994 This is her canon birthday. this means she turns 16 in S2 which makes her the youngest of her year group. I've headcanoned that she skipped a grade, or maybe her dad's started her in school a year earlier than everyone else because, well, it's Rachel.
Santana: Jan 12th 1994 Basically I used Naya's birthday. I know this messes up Finn's 'canon' birthday but bare with me.
Finn: Jan 15th 1994 I didn't use Finn's canon birthday because in S4 Sue says he's 19, like a lot, and I also couldn't find it anywhere but the Fandom Wiki. So his canon birthday doesn't work. Finn dies at 19 and if his birthday was the canon one of Aug 24th 1994 he wouldn't have been 19 when he died but 18. So I changed it and used Naya's birthday and what was said during S1's madona episode that Finn was 3 days younger to come up with Jan 15th.
Quinn: Feb 1st 1994 Basically I just looked up her birthday and there was a random thread on Fandom Wiki that stated this was her birthday so I rolled with it because it works with the timeline.
Britt: March 14th 1994 It's what it says on Fandom Wiki, but I don't remember it ever being said in canon. However it's also Pi day (3.14) so that's fun for the 'math genius'
Tina: Mar 28th 1995 A year younger than the others as she graduates S4 not S3. I was going to go with Jenna's birthday just because but apparently her and Harry (Mike) share the same birthday! So I had Mike have April 28th and moved Tina's up a month
Mike: Apr 28th 1994 See above I guess. It's Harry's birthday so I rolled with it. graduates S3
Sam: May 6th 1995 A year younger because he graduates S4. It's said in the prom episode that his birthday was a week before so I looked up when American's have prom (I'm english) and yeah. this was what I decided??? I can't remember why exactly I chose that date but I'm sticking with it because I can't change it in my fic now without messing stuff up. I maybe would change it to a week earlier so at the end of April.
Kurt: May 27th 1993 This is canon and makes Kurt the oldest in the club which is fun since Chris is the youngest of the main cast and it's also Chris's Birthday take away 3 years. My headcanon is that his mum and dad kept him back a year before starting school because he was so small or something OR that he missed too much school when his mom died and had to retake a year. I'm leaning towards the latter because that's a sadder backstory.
Artie: Jun 14th 1995 A year younger than everyone. again, I used the actor's birthday because I'm lazy and it fit.
Mercedes: Jul 10th 1994 I just see Mercedes having a summer birthday for some reason. IDK? literally just picked my mom's birthday.
And that's it for the main cast.
Here's the S3&4 newbies too, but it's mostly either random or the actor's birthday.
Unique: Aug 20th 1995 so she's in the year below Sam/Tina/Artie in my headcanon which is why she's not still at McKinley or highschool in S6. Alex's Newell's birthday.
Ryder: Sep 14th 1996 A year younger than Unique. A Sophomore in S4 (I think that may be said somewhere? or at least implied?) He could be a Freshman too, so 1997 or stick with '96 and have him kept back a year because of his dyslexia, but I decided against that in my story. Just a random date I picked because I didn't have anyone else in September.
Marley: Oct 4th 1996 Also a Sophomore in S4. (again I think that's said?) Melissa's birthday
Jake: Oct 17th 1997 Freshman in S4. Honestly, it's simply because Puck doesn't know him and if he was a Freshman in S3 than Puck would have maybe interacted with him? or at least known there was another Puckerman in the school and I don't think it's said anywhere that he's transfered or anything. so hence, a freshman... Jacob Artist's birthday.
Joe: Nov 12th 1994 completely random. In my head canon he's in the same year as Sam/Tina/Artie
Sugar: Feb 14th 1996 A year younger than Sam/Tina/Artie. I also just like the idea of her birthday being on Valentine's day, it kinda makes the whole Sugar Shack thing kinda sad in a 'noone would come if it was just for my birthday but! Valentines!!' way
Kitty: Feb 22 1997 Young enough to come back in S6 as a Senior (don't get me started on the confusion of that timeline) Random date.
I also headcanon the McCarthy twins as around late-1998/1999 (I picked 23rd May because Twins and Gemini! Only one based on astrology!) and in their sophomore year in S6. Same with Spencer
Rodderick ~ 1997 ish. I believe it's stated that he's a senior in S6? Same with Alistair??
Jane's a Freshman in S6 so a late-1999/2000 birthday.
and Myron is around November 2001 ish because he turns 13 in roughly November 2014... i think... again S6 timeline is insane.
