How I would do 2023 ship stats

You know, normally, I don't bother to do much with top AO3 ships stats. That's partly because someone already does it and partly because I think they're stupid stats that just lead to people gloating about their blorbos "winning". But I do routinely have a look at what's new and popular when I'm doing things like making a dance party playlist for Escapade Con, just so I know what fans might be getting into lately. I have to say, collecting these is not hard. It's not even particularly time consuming.

Doing it super efficiently would be easier with a script, yes, but most fandom stats aren't actually collected with scripts, and if you're only looking for the top 100 ships, you can more or less do that by hand. How I would set about it for you, the random fan who's curious but not curious enough to learn to code, would be to log into AO3 and then find tags where you can see the sidebar. They should be tags that encompass the whole archive and that are mandatory and unique… in other words, ratings.

Since every AO3 work must have one and only one rating, you can just check these five and get a good sense of what's on there. There are some minor wrinkles to iron out, but it's a good preliminary research step.

The way you want to do it is to start with a spreadsheet. Open up your ratings URLs (and also paste them in the spreadsheet for convenience—google sheets will make clickable links). Copy all the sidebar top ships into a list. Filter out all of these ships. Copy the next set, etc. After a while, you'll have a good list that's longer than 100 ships but that most likely contains everything really popular. (Filter for things posted/updated/whatever in the past year if that's the data you're after. Filter for f/f or whatever topic you're interested in if that's the question you're asking instead.)

Use your spreadsheet to generate the actual links for each of these ships. AO3 URLs are predictable: you can generate them from knowing the exact spelling of the tag and the normal format of this type of URL. (There are a bunch of standard spreadsheet functions that can be used to get rid of the work count numbers you've copied from AO3 to get just the pure ship tags. I'd use things like =right() and =left().)

Open the links. Copy the work totals back to your spreadsheet. Voilà!

One drawback of this method is, obviously, that it's boring and tedious, but if you didn't like boring and tedious, why were you collecting fandom stats anyway?

A more important drawback is that in using exclude filters, it's possible you could miss a ship. If the posting patterns are just right, there might be something that has its numbers reduced by excluding other ships that should be on your list. You could have a similar issue if the ships on your list are mostly one rating (so higher in those searches) and some other slightly larger overall ship is spread more evenly. I would try to ameliorate this problem by looking at the sizes of the smallest ships you're covering. They will likely be bigger than the entire fandom section for most fandoms. Taking another look at the bigger fandoms that could be hiding a small-end-of-big ship can help double-check that you haven't missed anything. Grabbing the top 130 or 150 ships in some search while only looking for the top 100 will likely find most of the edge stuff too.

Add any ships that look like they should be double checked to your spreadsheet. Add their work totals. Re-sort your list.

Another thing to consider is that AO3 keeps track of the most recent update date on fics. That's what's easy to search by. If you're only interested in when a work was first posted, easy manual filtering isn't the way to go… However, if the objective is to see which ship tags were active in a given year, most recent update date is the relevant piece of data anyway.

You're not going to recreate centreoftheselights' exact analysis unless you collect data year to year, but you can come up with something pretty similar that answers a similar question, and you don't need to be a programmer to do it.

In the end, accept that some data require hard collection methods that a site doesn't easily offer you and you might have to scrape multiple times a year with a script if you want to know that particular thing… or you might have to randomly sample and hand-count as with FFN shipping stats. (Yes, I've done it. It can be done. It's just annoying.)

So when you're setting out to look at some stats question, the big first step is to decide what you're even asking and why and whether you're just wimping out and going with what's easy to collect instead of what you actually want to know.

...now I'm kind of curious. Maybe I'll go pull some 2023 numbers.

Ah, you might be right; I think I skimmed that entry's propaganda, and it was very specific to whatever series it was about without dropping the full series name, and I was like "Maybe this is Warrior Cats? I feel lazy, I'm not going to look heavily into it."

So, as a reminder: use the full but common name for the series! For example, Miraculous Ladybug (this seems to be the most common title despite being a shortened version), Warrior Cats, BBC Sherlock, etc. And check that you don't have a space after the title's entry, as that counts as a different entry than the title without the space when using the UNIQUE function in Google sheets (which is how I count the unique entries).

As for recommendations, this is hard because I watch a lot of trash, especially recently, but:

- You can never go wrong with Revolutionary Girl Utena. Note: this show (and start with the show, not the movie) has a lot of potentially triggering stuff, so check out those warnings before you start if you have any triggers at all. It uses the triggering stuff very well and to tell its story and explore its themes, not just for, like, titillation though. Indeed, it is, I would argue, necessary for the story and themes the show seeks to explore. It is legally free on Youtube in...I want to say 480p, and in better resolution on Crunchyroll and Funimation (yes, Funimation's site is still up; I find it superior to Crunchyroll's since it actually includes closed captions for dubs, although it doesn't include newer anime from after the two companies merged). Also, you want to watch the sub for this. I'm normally not one to say "the dub is bad" and stuff and be a purist about it—in fact I normally go to bat for dubs—but, uh... yeah, the dub is bad this time. Crispin Freeman and Dan Green are delightful in it though, I'll give it that.

- Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood uses its female characters well. Maybe it could be better, I've seen some people in these tournaments have beef with it, but it's a pretty perfectly told story, like solid A+, with a lot of really great female characters who I find very satisfying so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. This is on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and I believe Amazon Prime?

- Don't let the title fool you: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a fantastic show with great female characters who are complex and human, have compelling arcs, and are vital to the story. The relationship between Rebecca and Paula is central to the show and SO good, especially as the show goes on. The title is because it explores the trope of the crazy ex-girlfriend in a very humanizing way, and the title/opening song even mentions how the title is a sexist term, but it's a lot more nuanced than that. Also, it's a musical with very good original songs every episode. But check trigger warnings for this show too though. The show is streaming on Netflix last I checked.

- Uhh... maybe the first two seasons of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic? It's a kid's show, but it's good. I haven't seen it in years and years though, so I don't know if I can still fully vouch for it. I believe it is streaming on Netflix?

- Revue Starlight? I haven't thought about it heavily, but I had no beef watching it. This is streaming on HiDive.

- I've heard good things about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, but I can't vouch for it personally. It's streaming on Crunchyroll.

Honestly, I know more imperfect shows that I'm satisfied with, like I give it a B+ to A- at least, but that I haven't thought heavily about than stuff where I'm like, "Oh, yeah, definitely, definitely, nothing I'd pick out there as a problem." For example, Baccano! is probably imperfect (as well as not streaming legally anywhere), but I don't remember being, like, struck by a bunch of problems there. So, I'm not the best for recs that I can give a 100% guarantee for.

Allrighty! Form’s closed, submissions were counted (there were 306 unique characters submitted) and matchups have been arranged!

Now, some stuff I need to say about how matchups were arranged and other things:

-Characters with a similar number of submissions were grouped together for fairness sake. Tho the number of submissions doesn’t line up 100% with popularity (example: Undyne from Undertale got 3 votes) I believe it is accurate enough for it to work.

-Characters that share a source IP are more likely to be grouped together, specially if they’re equally popular. This is to prevent overrepresentation, since there’s quite a lot of warriors and homestuck characters and I didn’t want the final showdown to be a cat fight (or a troll fight).

-The brackets were mainly organized by Google sheets’ alphabetical order tool, not by hand, so don’t come after me.

-Hiccup and Toothless (HTTYD) were counted as one character because I don’t know anyone who would vote for one and not the other since they’re pretty much established as a set in the movies and shows.

-Characters who only got 2 submissions will compete in a “little league” competition after the main one ends (if I remember and have time)

Word Count Update! And other things!

I have created a spreadsheet on google sheets to catalog and visualize my word count progress as I continue to strive toward 1,000,000 words.

I set out on this journey on 5 June 2022. Today is 20 April 2023, and I want to take some time to reflect back on the past almost-year’s worth of life that has happened while I’ve been cataloging my word count progress. 

When I started this project, I was fresh out of a breakup, navigating polyamory and co-parenting with a broken heart. I had just bid my 7-year-long career farewell, and my future was uncertain. I was back in school after a year-long hiatus. I started this project on the heels of a lot of loss.

Since then, I’ve survived the despair-inducing end of a decade-long life partnership, read about four and a half dozen books, had the opportunity to practice forgiveness on my family and others who hurt me, celebrated finally publishing two more books, came out as nonbinary and aro-ace, navigated the unique experiences that come with being a parent to a Teenager (TM), and tied the knot. I also pushed through one of the most depressing cases of writer’s block I’ve ever experienced.

My writing, and indeed this project, was deeply entwined with that aforementioned now-ended decade-long queer-platonic life partnership. That person had become inextricably linked with my personal writing culture, and for the first time since they left town in 2020, I found myself having to write without them. Writing had been a bonding experience, a sacred and intimate act we did, together, for too long to remember. In this way, this person became synonymous with my first love (writing). To put words on paper without them in my life felt like sacrilege. 

So I had to learn to write again. And as I did, writing became my constant. It began with a desire to commune with the muse who had one been so tied to my former partner. Hours, days, weeks, months spent unable to even stare at the blank page without weeping. You could say I spent my time in prayer, lingering in a sort of probationary period in a religious order with whom I had fallen out of practice, out of favor. I was a neophyte once more, confined to a vow of silence.

And so I listened. And so I read. And so I studied. And soon enough, as if from an impossible primal well, the forms of words began to come. Trickling, at first... nonfiction about mostly nothings... struggling descriptions of my aching day-to-day perpetuity... bits and pieces of verse that, alone, amounted to... maybe something... and hours, days, weeks, spent between, just trying to replenish the well, to pull something forward that wasn’t the haunting emptiness of wordlessness.

As I write this, I am about to enter a new phase of my life, moving away from my home of 14 years to an entirely different state. I’m about to graduate college, shortly after I graduate to a new stage of parenthood: my kid is entering high school. I am about to become a first-time homeowner and spend much of my free time rehabilitating a house that was abandoned for almost three years.

The world around me has gotten more dangerous. And yet, I find myself excited to step outside in ways I haven’t felt since childhood. I feel the muse, her ebbs and flows, dancing with me as I go. I see her everywhere, her touch in the wind, her smile in the rain, her gaze in the migrating sunbeam where my cat takes a nap, her voice in the beating of my heart.

I have written over 470,000 words since last April, but the most important thing I have learned since then is... to be silent. To listen. To read. To study. I know now that, in the moments where I feel the muse has abandoned me, what I need is... silence. Between the moments of feverish typing and contemplative crafting, there is a necessary peacefulness.

I will take it as the blessing it is.

The major chords cheat sheet is a basic PDF file with a visual of all the major chords. This cheat sheet shows you the chords with notes for that chord highlighted and also is organized by the order of notes. So, the first ones list the white-white-white note chords and then the white-black-white chords, followed by the black-white-black chords. The minor chords cheat sheet is just like the major chords cheat sheet, just showing you all of the minor chords. An inversion just means you can play the notes of a chord in any order anywhere on the keyboard. Any C-E-G, anywhere on the piano, in any order, is going to be the same chord. A good demonstration of this can be found in this video. The reason inversions are so important is they make it a lot easier to play chord progressions, which are different chords in a row in a song. This will be really annoying having to move our hand all the way down from the C chord to the F major chord. This may not seem that challenging, but as a beginner, moving our hands all around the piano will be really challenging as we try to land on the right notes. Instead, what we want to do is keep our hand in the same spot and play an F major chord inversion to play notes that are really close by. Let me explain what I mean by this. Same with the A. This part of the video demonstrates this well. The video for this example is here. This is the fun part of the lesson. All the chords you need for any popular song are already on Google, free online. I try to look for the version online that has at least 4 stars. If you look at the chords in this example , some of them will have chord extensions. I want you to ignore all the chord extensions as a beginner because even if you play the chords without the extensions they will still sound great, the extensions just add a little more flair. Now, after going to one of our websites from the Google search results of the chords, we have all of our chords in the song and we have our cheat sheets to figure out the chords. The nice thing about most popular songs is that they repeat chords over and over again. So really you just have to learn these four chords and you can play the entire first verse of the song. How do we find these chords? We use the cheat sheet. What the close chords cheat sheet does is give you a list of chords that are close to each other. The first two columns of the sheet go together and so do the last two columns. For example, G major and Ab major both use the same notes. This is our first chord. Next, we find our second chord, which is C major. Going to the cheat sheet we find that the notes are C-E-G. Our third chord is G major, which we find at the top of our cheat sheet, second from the right. These notes are B-D-G. This is our G major chord. Finally, we have our D major chord. On the cheat sheet we see that the notes are A-D-F. Alright, now this is the part where everyone freaks out. Now you have to learn the chords fast enough so you can actually play the song. Most people try to learn all four chords at the same time, but this is a very inefficient way to learn. It takes a long time this way, people get frustrated, and they end up quitting. All I want you to do is alternate between these chords. I want you to alternate between these chords until you have it completely drilled down. These chords are a little more challenging because we have to move our fingers a bit farther. Next, I want you to go back through all four chords again, alternating between two at a time, to really drill down this entire series. The concept of the root note is easy to understand, whatever the name of the chord is, that letter is the root note. So, for the C major chord, the root note is a C. For the C minor chord, the root note is still a C. Same goes for the G major chord where the root note is a G. I want you to repeat these four notes very slowly in order to drill them into your muscle memory. The final step is going through the entire chord progression. Before we go any further, I just want to say that the first time you learn this it will take a lot of time. The next step involves going over money patterns.
