paranormasight is so impressive in that it's an anime-style mystery horror visual novel that doesn't have any "pervy jokes" or sexualized designs. the world thought it was impossible. scientists are baffled. danganronpa is sweating nervously

it's tragic how the memory of kasumi has been warped by sumire's insecurity. she's practically portrayed as an inhuman gymnastics machine, a little sad about her sister one time but achievements are all that really matter. i wonder if during vanilla p5 sumire's suppressed feelings of inadequacy ever caused her to think badly of her dead sister "sumire". to think its good that she lived and sumire died. because that's what sumire herself wanted.

she remembered she had a dead sister as kasumi! but her self-hatred made her portray kasumi as someone who didn't really care that sumire was dead. the sumire that kasumi jumped in front of a car to protect. she's completely twisted up who kasumi was as a person when she was alive it's fucked. she idolized kasumi to the point of making a complete mockery of who she was and what she believed in.

it says so much about both maruki and sumire that maruki never once considers reviving kasumi.

i think something important to keep in mind when trying to understand anthy is the way that prolonged abuse often becomes a person's entire world. the abuse is so visceral and painful and seemingly eternal that every other aspect of their life becomes unimportant. nothing else provides such strong emotions, so even though the emotions are profoundly negative it creates this attachment to the abuse.

anthy may hate akio but it was so difficult for her to let go of him because he was the only one who knew the way she suffered. because he caused the suffering. the rest of their lives were grey and dull compared to the vibrant poison of their relationship. the others at anthy's school were stupid, naive to the truth. they were nothing like her, in her eyes she is more alike the jaded and broken akio/dios. she hated akio but he was her entire world in all that mattered. everyone else may as well have been a faceless mannequin that she simply had to manipulate to the whims of her awful brother. that was her role in life as a heartless doll or whatever the fuck she said in the suicide scene.

then utena came along. at first anthy treated her as more cattle she was to herd towards her wolf of a brother, but slowly she grew closer to utena and began seeing her eye to eye. suddenly someone new was providing her with strong feelings that... weren't actually pain and suffering and hopelessness! this was crucial in anthy's escape from abuse as she was finally able to open here eyes to the world outside of her birdcage of abuse. not to mention utena being groomed and raped by akio probably helped anthy in seeing that someone could be abused like this and not be ruined. they could get away from akio. and lesbionically kiss in the outside world without caring about patriarchal status.

anyway point of post is the writing of anthy himemiya is a masterpiece in showcasing trauma. i'm barely scratching the surface here

kawakami's confidant storyline is actually a good look into how teachers are underpaid/underappreciated/overworked and how women can be forced into sex work because of extortion/debts but i feel like they pushed the maid thing too hard for a lot of people to like her. the game had her keep up the act even when it was completely unnecessary purely for fanservice which is a shame, i think it stops a lot of people from wanting to complete her confidant.

idk i feel like kawakami opinions are either "mommy maid waifu" or "she's so gross and inappropriate to a minor" and that kinda glosses over her very real struggles as a woman living paycheck to paycheck. but i get it, the game really leans into a maid fetish with her sometimes
