The Many References in Teniwoha's Samsa
If you haven't read "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka, the one thing you likely know about the short story is that in it a man turns into a bug. And this is enough to recognize the allusion of Samsa being named after the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, as well as the imagery of a dragging tail and onomatopoeia of "zuki". However, there are several deeper layers to Teniwoha's symbolism of themes and references to "The Metamorphosis" that add a great level of cohesion with Immiscible Discord's story. First, I would like to say that "The Metamorphosis" can be found as a free pdf online, and is a very good short story, so if you have the time and energy you should read it. This post will only be summarizing the themes that are referenced in Samsa and Immiscible Discord and will not include some of the other great commentaries Franz Kafka has. And of course, it will spoil the progression of the plot. Also, all quoted lyrics are from Amiaryllis' english cover, which is also very good and worth listening to. The lyrics will not be quoted in order.
The biggest and first theme the surrealist nature of the story expresses is that Gregor Samsa has been led to - and does - believe that his worth is tied to his ability to work. When he discovers he is a bug, he is only concerned because he is going to be late for his job if he cannot figure out how to get out of bed in his new body. He is determined to go to work because his entire family relies on his job to pay for their lives. ("i've grown monstrous down to the very core of my soul") This is comparable to Mafuyu's relationship to academics. Their mother relies on them to fulfill her dream of Mafuyu becoming a doctor, and so teaches them that nothing matters as much as this goal. Even when Mafuyu is stressed or physically ill, they push themselves to attend school, club activities, cram school, and study. Mafuyu's academic performance is their worth to their mother, as Samsa's income is his worth to his family. ("so could the bravest of souls face me and bear the toll?") When Samsa's family discovers he is an insect, they are horrified. Samsa finds this reasonable as he also considers his form monstrous. It is another theme of the story being from his perspective that he has good faith in his family to the point of seeming either naive or to have a low self-esteem. Actions that are most easily justified as disgust and hatred are rationalized by him, despite acknowledging at points that his family was not as affectionate to him after they began relying on him for money, as well as acts of physical violence such as his father shoving him back into his room.
("those painful fights, fearful nights") This is an interesting thing to compare to Mafuyu's experience of being gaslit by their mother. They believe very strongly- because they were told- that everything their mother is doing is for them, their future, and is in their best interests. This prevents them from questioning her actions and sacrificing their own desires in a self-destructive manner, which is also something Samsa does. For instance, he hides himself with a bedsheet so his sister does not have to see him when she brings him food, despite him finding this uncomfortable. ("craving any smile or attention just from you") Samsa's sister is the only one who still shows affection towards him, as she is the one who brings him food, but eventually she too festers fear towards and dehumanizes him. By the end of the story, the entire family blames their despair on him becoming an insect and no longer believe he is Gregor Samsa. The most direct reference to the story in the lyrics is when his father throws apples at him and has to be stopped from killing him by his wife, Gregor's mother. He crawls back into his room and he is locked inside. ("i beg, don’t throw those rotten apples at my chest before they lock up, lock up samsa") This could best reference when Kaito says that Mafuyu's mother is killing their feelings or true identity. Additionally, Mafuyu's mother places all blame for Mafuyu's recent behavior on Kanade's influence. And as the family plans for their life after his death, Mafuyu's mother tells Kanade that she plans to convince Mafuyu to go back to doing what she wants, no matter how extreme she must be about it. ("if it all goes to plan, then, we’ll soon rejoice") In the end, Gregor Samsa stops eating, and dies of starvation. All the while, he still thinks fondly of his family and believes they are in the right for their treatment of him. Gregor Samsa is used to form a strong representation of the extent to which Mafuyu has been gaslit. ("so please don't tell me that you'll be giving up on reality, samsa") The biggest difference (other than the bug transformation) is that Mafuyu has people who still dearly care about them, and not just for what they can provide. While all of Gregor Samsa's family abandons him, the other members of Nightcord do not abandon Mafuyu. Mafuyu has a reason to live, and people to tell them that they do not deserve to be locked away. ("i know that brilliant light will shine as the clock strikes 25")
He could already hardly feel the decayed apple in his back or the inflamed area around it, which was entirely covered in white dust. He thought back of his family with emotion and love. If it was possible, he felt that he must go away even more strongly than his sister. He remained in this state of empty and peaceful rumination until he heard the clock tower strike three in the morning. He watched as it slowly began to get light everywhere outside the window too. Then, without his willing it, his head sank down completely, and his last breath flowed weakly from his nostrils (Franz Kafka).

Look I know the Metamorphosis reference in Servamp is for Shamrock BUT. I might have brain worms BUT Mahiru is so Gregor Samsa core… does this make sense
i mean... as far as i understand it no? metamorphosis is about how gregor samsa is basically abandoned by his family the moment he's not able to provide anymore, right? which is depicted as him being transformed into a bug seemingly out of nowhere
but even though mahiru thinks he'll be abandoned the moment he's not convenient anymore the people around him actually encourages him to think for himself more rather than continuously pleasing others at the expense of his own wellbeing
which is why shamrock is gregor samsa. a man who was so desperate to be 'good' like yoshimasa and yet his effort went unrewarded for it as he ended up abandoned

The Radiance (Hollow Knight) "The Radiance is one of the few higher beings / gods in Hollow Knight. It was previously the main higher being of the land know known as Hallownest. Then along came The Pale King. The Pale King buried The Radiance’s religious relevance with his own, becoming the knew main higher being of Hallownest. This! is because The Pale King was able to give the bugs thought, and let them have minds of their own instead of being savage beasts.
Also yes, every character in Hollow Knight is a bug. very corruption aligned as well.
Eventually, eons later, The Radiance came back, upset about being replaced. It brought about a mind-controlling plague known as The Infection. This was a mass breakout of a disease in Hallownest, which caused bugs to loose their minds and become obsessed with praising The Radiance. Not to mention the fact that orange sludge / goop drips out of the infected bugs in a really grotesque way. This is MULTIPLE elements of the corruption. Corruption of physical form, Corruption of thought, and religious corruption, as well as general themes of bugs. literally this entire game and franchise revolves around bugs.
The Pale King tries to fight back many times, sacrificing his own children and failing. By the time the player character arrives, The Knight/Ghost, Hallownest is already in a post apocalyptic state of infection, very few bugs with thought and true being remaining."
Gregor Samsa (The Metamorphosis) "For one thing, he gets turned into a big bug, but what I think matters more is that his transformation sheds light to the unhealthy dynamics of his family, it reveals it's toxicity, the corruption at it's core, if you will. Also, unwillingly or not, he definitely strikes fear in people."

The first time I read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, I was in my second year of college.
At the time, despite going to a university that was a 12-hour drive away, I faithfully returned home during every break, every holiday, and every long weekend. Much like Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of The Metamorphosis and breadwinner of the Samsa household, I thought my family needed me. They couldn't function without me. Texts and calls flooded in every day from my siblings, my mother, my father, so at the end of my second year of college, I wrote a creative nonfiction essay about The Metamophosis. My family is not like Samsa's, I claimed. Even if I get transformed into a bug like Samsa did, they would never faint at the sight of me. They accepted me each and every time I returned home from college, slightly changed from the last but still human at my core. They loved me, I said. They always will.
The recent release of Teniwoha's "Zamuza" via Project Sekai's N25 brought me back to that essay, and upon rereading it for the first time since I wrote it four years ago, I... pity myself. At 19, I had not yet come to terms with my family's dysfunction, my mother's narcissism, and my father's neglect. Being parentified growing up often means that you're the last of your siblings to realize you were cheated of a proper childhood, and that growing up too quickly has detrimental consequences on your health. Cortisol, the steroid hormone released into your body during long periods of stress, is only good for your body in smaller doses. Today, I am writing this post at 6am after rolling around in bed for hours, stuck in the limbo of waking and sleeping. Unfortunately, insomnia is only one of the issues that arise in adulthood after living in fight-or-flight mode your entire life. I would love to tell you more, but that would make this post way too long, so let's move on to the interesting stuff:
I see a lot of my younger self in Mafuyu Asahina, who puts on a "good girl" facade her entire life in order to meet the expectations of her demanding parents. By that I mean, she sacrifices her happiness and her identity to secure love and empathy from her mother, and boy do I know helpless that feeling can be. I only wish that when I was in high school, I also had good friends like Kanade, Mizuki, and Ena. That it didn't take me so long to realize that I am not responsible for my parents' emotions and that I did not need to take on adult responsibilities at a young age to be loved. Because love, as most people learn at a young age and I learned when I was a little older, is supposed to be unconditional.
Gregor Samsa, who transformed into a bug at the beginning of the story, died at the end of The Metamorphosis due to familial neglect. After sacrificing his entire life and identity to serve his family, they moved on quickly without him once he was no longer useful as their golden child. This would have been my fate, had I not pivoted my priorities later on during college to focus on myself. This would have been Mafuyu's fate, if not for her good friends who are unconditionally invested in her well-being. The song "Zamuza" is inspired by The Metamorphosis, and the song is often called "Samsa" when referred to in English. A tribute to Samsa, I think this song is not only Kanade's attempt to save Mafuyu, but also her way of making sure that Samsa, despite being forgotten by his family, will continue to be remembered by her audience.
Take a listen, if you haven't yet:

I have a question, stanley. When you look deep into your core- is there something there? Or are you empty? Are you void of what makes a person, a person? Does it hurt? Is it like a pit, black and endless, waiting to consume you? Or is it like something inside of you is broken, and you’ll never be able to fix it?
...
When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin. We don't even get to know what he was like before he turned into this. We can try to infer things from how people react to his change, how his family misses who he once was, but their treatment towards him takes a turn so fast it's hard to really tell.
I sometimes wonder if he was ever human to begin with. Even if he was, maybe he had always resembled more of a bug than a man. Maybe that just who he was deep down and he could only contain it to his nightmares for so long. That really he was just a giant insect that caused the people around him to feel waves of disgust and burden. It feels unfair.
But maybe it isn't. Maybe he was truly always like that and we aren't shown because then we'd have no care for what happens to him. If he was as awful to be around then as he was to look at now then surely that means it's alright, right? This was meant to happen then. It's revenge.
Then why does he starve himself? If he really was such a horrible person surely regardless of the circumstances he'd have no care what burden he is to others. He wouldn't have starved himself to death so that they may be free of him. I reread The Metamorphosis and each time I do I find myself just trying to figure out who Gregor Samsa is. And each time I find a different answer. And each time I feel it's the wrong one.
So I read it again, and I flip to page one, and When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin, and I reach the end, and I find a new meaning, and the cycle continues. And at some point I begin to wonder if Gregor Samsa is real. Of course he's a fictional character, and therefore can't be, but I wonder if he's alive. If each time I flip back to page one he feels it as he starts over. As he has to experience every torturous moment again. Just to once again take the selfless route and let himself become more human than he ever was in doing so. For me to ponder it for a few minutes before starting again.
And I wonder which one of us is more trapped.
And I wonder if the answer would satisfy me, or if I'd start again to find a new one.
When I look over at my colleague while writing this I'm nothing but conflicted. I know nothing about who either of us were before the parable. All I know is who he hurt. It's no longer me. It's now a list, one of at least two people. Had it been just me it would have been fine, because I don't remember who I was before. For all I know I deserved it. And if I didn't then I certainly did after some time in here. 432 never deserved it though.
But as I watched him in that museum frozen in place I realized something so inherently human in his face. Some emotion that went beyond what physical existence could present as humanity. I know now that no matter what the hell he had done before I couldn't hurt him for it now. He had long since starved whatever vermin he once was.
Mine had only recently awoken.
It's what I feared. That if I looked deep into my core I'd find I was some monstrous vermin waiting to bring fear and disgust into any room I walked in. Being nothing but a burden to those around me. I can see now that when this started I had buried it deep into my center where it waited. And it crawled its way out slowly. It rocked in bed and moved its legs uncontrollably as I hurt and as I hurt others. And once I had been to stressed with what was happening around me to keep it down, it consumed me.
And I woke up. And I set the time. And it was far past when my alarm clock would go off. And my nightmares were no longer just that.
I've lost some part of me that made me human. I'm not the monstrous vermin I knew I was deep down. I've been that way since the incident.
I know how I feel about William. I have for quite a while. But if I do not starve myself of this I will remain as I am. I do a very poor job of staying hungry, it seems.
...
If I got to an ending, if I tried to reset without fear of what would happen to him, maybe then I would've proven I've starved myself. Maybe then I would gain back the humanity I can feel myself losing. I could be rid of the core that has consumed me and start to truly be human.
And if it didn't work the first time, I could try again. And again. And again. And I could keep reaching an ending. I could keep things resetting. And if I keep flipping back to page one just maybe the universe will have decided that Gregor Samsa had starved himself to death enough times to pay for his wrong choices and he would wake up a human. One with all of his humanity. One with his mental and emotional state in tact and all of his memories and the undoubtable knowledge that he is real. He always was. His fears were irrational and everything was ok. And all he had to do was deny himself the right to remain as he was with others to gain this.

I know we don't take Richard Dawkins seriously any more but this is HAUNTING me. Bad sci fi. "An allegory of what"
Do you go into the Louvre and then get mad because the landscape behind the Mona Lisa is blurry. Would you ask for a hammer and then get mad when somebody hands you a toolbox
#i didn't know how much i cared about the metamorphosis#the best take i ever read on the metamorphosis is that because it was written under capitalism it gets taught as like.#this is just how things are. there is no way to change this. this is just the despair of life in our time.#sorry i don't know who said that#it reminds me of how ursula k leguin said that even the divine right of kings seemed immutable to people who lived under it#WHAT does bad sci fi mean in this case. that it didn't explain to you how the man became an insect#jesus fucking christ.#but the thing about the insect is that it DOESN'T MATTER what it is.#the allegory of the insect IS many things because the point is not the insect itself!!!!!#the insect gives people language to talk about what it is that makes them unsuitable to our current social structure#because it makes them UNEMPLOYABLE#that is the core of the story. gregor samsa is now unemployable; which means the world does not care if he dies#(no one talk to me about doxxing nazis and getting them fired or whatever. i don't feel like talking about how that's extremely different.#it just is. i'll find an essay if someone REALLY needs one.)#let alone whether or not he's HAPPY. whether or not he has people around him who talk to him like a person#GOD how can you not recognize that after the last year we had#i wish i could joke about this. but i'm so sad#i think about how many people just DIED because we decided that they weren't worth caring for.#i think about the personal terror of being the family member who earned the most money in the household during the pandemic#just WAITING for the other shoe to drop and for them to fire me for having an opinion or being myself#they did fine without me paying for a lot of stuff but i know i am the understudy#(WHICH IS NOT EVEN THAT BAD ALL THINGS CONSIDERED we did pretty okay last year)#i think about how many times in my life PERSONALLY i have been grete (NOT GREGOR--GRETE) and i want to DO BETTER#do you know what my father's first words were when he woke up from a 3 week coma after the accident that broke his back#paralyzed and unable to walk#at age 21--the physical effects of which still hurt him 40some years later#the first thing out of his mouth was 'tell my boss i'll be late for work'#WHAAAT COULD IT POOOOOSSSSIBLY MEEEAAAN

@wxrgirl     :     character development questions that are weird: If your muses were animals what kind of animal would they be and why? What traits of said animal would they like to have / hate to have? Who's the Gregor Samsa of your muses and would just, you know, roll with becoming a giant insect with a rotting apple stuck in his side and worry about getting to work on time?
Tumblr media
aleksander   .   stag   .   this feels like an obviousy choice  ,  it is the animal used to represent him in canon also  .  v majestic  &  private  &  capable of stabbing you thoroughly with its antler  .  he would  ,  in fact  ,  love the antler  .  wouldn’t love that he doesn’t look at all dangerous  &  that i would pet him
kaz   .   crow  ,  duh   .   mysterious  ,  associated  with death  &  disease  ,  capable of flight  ,  look badass  .  there is nothing kaz wouldn’t like about being a crow
yuri   .   praying  mantis   .   he may not look as creepy as they do  ,  but he looks just as inconspicuous until he strikes  &  eats you alive  .  metaphorically speaking  .  physically  ,  he couldn’t harm a fly which is a trait he desperately needs given his chosen career path
felicity   .   corgi   .   they are a bunch of rich kids  &  will never quite get that out of their bones  ,  even though felicity would absolutely hate being associated with a corgi  .  very fluffy  ,  tho  .  &  she would like to get her head scratched  ,  maybe
victor   .   hawk   .   idk if hawks hold their grudges for ten plus years  ,  but they look like they do  .  aside from that victor needs some of that deadly precision because then we wouldn’t have to deal with the entire plot of either novel because  . . .  he would have been better at stabbing eli first time around
jonathan   .   moth   .   drawn by the light  ,  easily manipulated  ,  fluffy  &  friend  -  shaped  .  that’s jon alright  !  he would hate having any of those traits   ( even though he already possessed them )   but he would like to have the wings i think
peter   .   seal   .   listen  ,  seals are great  ,  they get to chill most of their day  &  sometimes brutally murder some fish for dinner  .  i love seals  .  peter loves seals  .  let him be happy  &  lonely on his ice floe  ,  please
mordecai   .   hare   .   have you seen hares  ?  they always look panicked  &  a little bit on drugs  ,  which is about what i expect from a gay man in the 1800s  .  also means he could flee any social interaction pretty damn quick  .  god  ,  now i want to be a hare
cecil   .   golden  retriever   .   they are both fluffy  &  filled with love  .  enough said  .  the world needs more golden retrievers in it
malik   .   peacock   .   beautiful  ,  nice to look at  ,  but ultimately probably rotten to the core  .  have you looked at peacocks  ?  if arrogance was a bird it would be a peacock  .  though malik would kill for a full set of tail feathers  .  he would be insufferable  .  prefers to float over actually flying  ,  tho
thana   .   owl   .   wise  ,  nocturnal  ,  predators even though they do not look like it  .  thana may be the kindest person you ever meet  ,  but at least the wisdom part kind of applies  .  she doesn’t eat meat  ,  though  ,  so there may be some complications regarding the diet
nathanael   .   rabbit   .   100 %  innocent  ,  deserves to be held  &  petted at all times  ,  will pee on your carpet if scared  .  please do not stress your local nathanael  ,  he has been through enough
xayun   .   fox   .   sly  &  smart  ,  but ultimately not dangerous as long as you treat them with the respect they deserve  .  also fluffy  (:  i like foxes  &  more people should represent them
nyala   .   cheetah   .   quick  &  deadly  &  graceful  .  nyala will have your throat faster than you can blink  &  she would love to be able to do that  .  also as a cheetah she would no longer be required to communicate  &  i genuinely love that for her
eleadora   .   wolf   .   edgy  ,  loner  ,  doesn’t understand what’s good for her  .  ela desperately needs to learn that hunting in a pack is more successful than hunting alone  ,  though  ,  so please give her more traits a wolf has
river   .   deer   .   very much like a stag  ,  but softer somehow  .  shy at first  ,  will be your best friend if you offer them food  (:
rosalyn   .   house  cat   .   comforting presence  ,  everyone tells their secrets to their cats  ,  happy to just sleep eighteen hours a day  .  also rosie is the type to throw things off her desk out of spite  .  she feels bad  &  apologizes for it immediately  ,  so perhaps she could use some of the pride  &  elegance  &  arrogance every cat kinda has
florence   .   dove   .   wants to get out of her cage but can’t  ,  very pretty to look at  ,  will tear your eyes out if she thinks you deserve it  .  florence is a fantastic dove  .  cinderella needs to sit down with her
felix   .   snake   .   but like in the biblical sense  .  fucking deceiving liar  ,  deserves to choke on the fucking apple  .  no  ,  i do not hate my own character why do you ask  ?  if only felix was actually venomous  ,  he is just stupid enough to poison himself
oskar   .   apparently  the  gregor  samsa  of  my  muse  list  .  need  i  say  more  ?  just let him lie in his room  &  slowly decompose  ,  he wants nothing more   ( somebody please help him )
