Birthday Spotlight - Dr Gary Konowalous
Tumblr media
[13th January - Capricorn]
Known first and foremost as the MVP of Falling Falling Stars, Dr Gary was a runaway hit even though he was never meant to be in anything more than a handful of reminiscences re: Efnisien's sessions with a psychologist who specialised in criminal juvenile behaviour, especially those who leaned towards murder, rape, arson and animal cruelty.
The Director of Hillview eventually came to be featured in the Underline the Rainbow alternate universe, an omegaverse where he is the Director of Hillview Omega Rehabilitation, a peak alpha, and the unlikely partner of Efnisien ap Wledig in an unusual m/m romance. Going from psychologist in one serial to lover and main character in another is a pretty big glow up!
Tumblr media
‘You touch the lives of the people around you, Efnisien. In the past, all you saw was the negative ways you influenced them. I’m sure that will be the main way you orient to the world going into the future, though as I always say – we’ll work on it. But you do have an influence on the lives of the people around you. Sometimes it’s fleeting. But sometimes it’s meaningful, and important, and quite a remarkable thing. ‘I enjoy you as a client, not only because I enjoy the work we do together as a professional, but also because I enjoy the young man you are. You’re kind and compassionate, funny, and sometimes possessed with a very wicked sense of humour which I frankly find quite relatable. You’re insightful and courageous.’
Falling Falling Stars
Tumblr media
Spoils of the Spoiled - A minor character referred to by name only, and the diagnostician of Efnisien ap Wledig, formally diagnosing him with Pure O (a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).
Tumblr media
Falling Falling Stars - Intended to only be a side character with minor cameos, Dr Gary quickly became the MVP of this long running serial, and was as much a star of this story as Efnisien and Arden!
Tumblr media
The Moon is Down - A oneshot between Dr Gary and Mika from Falling Falling Stars.
Constellations - A Gwyn + Efnisien reconciliation story in the Falling Falling Stars universe.
Underline the Black - Main POV character alongside Efnisien ap Wledig. An enemies-to-lovers, alpha/alpha romance, with very unconventional dynamics and a significant (20+ year) age gap!
Underline the Gold - Cameo role
Underline the Blue - Cameo role
Underline the Red - More significant character here, and the unlikely antagonist
Tumblr media
PhD of Psychology
Specialises in niche psychology (juvenile criminals/sociopaths in Falling Falling Stars, omega rehabilitation in Underline the Black)
Has a golden retriever - Polly - who is the goodest girl ever
He is dry, witty, dominating, a top, compassionate, insightful, bullish, heavy-handed, can be ruthless, and quick to apologise (though he has to be!)
Older. Age undisclosed in Falling Falling Stars, but he's 44 in Underline the Black.
Tumblr media
The scene where he dropped absolutely everything to save Efnisien's life in Falling Falling Stars
Every time he's made Efnisien cry
Being so extra in an omegaverse that he's a literal "peak alpha."
Workaholic!
Consistently helping Efnisien realise the world can be a better place, usually after upsetting him a lot beforehand.
Dumping Efnisien into the ocean (just about) to snap him out of a dissociative episode.
The blue cup
His espresso + wine habit in Underline the Black
Chain-smoking his dead lover's cigarettes while moodily staring at the beach, in Underline the Black, like a 44 year old emo kid.
Tumblr media
That good old PhD in psychology
He keeps his wry sense of humour
He always owns Hillview!
He cares deeply for Efnisien
Good dresser! Likes suits.
He pushes too hard
He has a strong sense of inner justice and equality
Needs a holiday
Tumblr media
His appearance was intentionally never described in Falling Falling Stars so that people could imagine their own safe version of a psychologist! That's nearly 780k of never telling you his hair or eye colour, for example! Many people swear they know what he looks like, and are surprised to realise I never said a word about what he looks like in this story. Much to the rage and chagrin of fanartists (I'm sorry!)
Dr Gary's therapy sessions have inspired multiple readers to seek therapists of their own, and some people have described him as being the therapy they needed. Sometimes fiction just hits right, especially when Dr Gary's in the room. (He's a pretty annoying therapist though!)
I started shipping Efnisien and Dr Gary in the first 3 chapters of Falling Falling Stars, and then had to stop myself for the rest of the story to maintain their professional relationship. But in a way, the seeds for Underline the Black were sown a long time ago!
After typing 'Dr Gary' for so long in Falling Falling Stars, it took ages to train myself to write 'Gary' in Underline the Black! Thankfully it took Efnisien a while to get on board with saying 'Gary' instead of 'Dr Gary' as well. :D
Tumblr media
‘Did you fuck me?’ Efnisien croaked, thinking he should be presenting a more macho image right now, but waking up to that dog touching him – and feeling a bit like he might be dying – was making it hard to manage much at all. ‘You would know if I’d fucked you,’ Dr Gary said, voice wry.

Happy Birthday the super sexy Scottish actress  Michelle Gomez.
Michelle was born as Michelle May Romney Marsham Antonia Gomez in Ayr in 1966, and grew up in Glasgow. Her dad is of Portuguese descent and is from  Montserrat, her mum ran a model agency’ She is one of four children; two older brothers, one of whom is called Derek, and a twin brother who died in.2004.
When she was seven, her parents took her to see Cole Porter’s musical take on the Shrew, Kiss Me, Kate at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow and she was mesmerised by the character Kate, she described it as
 I was electrified and, of course, I thought they were talking to me. Even then I had an ego running riot. And I loved Kate’s energy, her fieriness. Even at that age, I identified; I thought: ‘Yup, I’m one of her, she’s one of me.”
Michelle attended Shawlands Academy and the junior section of The Scottish Academy of Music and Dance from the age of twelve before going to the adult Academy.
Her first major role was in Irvine Welsh's  Acid House , that’s my pal Gary McCormack with her in the first pic, she went on to make small screen appearances in The Bill and Taggart (two different roles in each) before the very funny and underrated Book Club on channel Four.
Other TV appearances have been in Rebus, Murder in Suburbia and Carrie & Barry before her big break as staff liaison officer Sue White in the Channel 4 comedy Green Wing.
For me Michelle’s best work has been as “Missy” in Dr Who, where she regularly steals scenes. Before the first female Doctor, she was the first female “Master”, one of the Doctors recurring arch enemies.
As well as her roles on this side of the Atlantic Michelle has appeared in Highlander: The Raven the American supernatural television series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, featuring in all 36 episodes, the show got rave reviews but I have not watched it myself, not being a fan of the supernatural horror genre. It was cancelled in July 2020 due to the covid pandemic, I wouldn’t write off it being picked up again in the future, some sources are erroneously saying a series 5 is due soon.
Michelle has been on our screens in The Flight Attendant, series based on the 2018 novel of the same name, it’s on HBO Max in the States, I must admit I’ve not got round to watching it as yet, the show was originally meant to be a mini-series, but a second series was commissioned and it was shown in April this year. It’s not known whether there will be a third series as yet.
Fans of Michelle and the Superhero genre will be pleased that they return to HBO Max in December.
No doubt we will also see her return to Dr Who someday, I certainly hope so. Gomez has been married to actor Jack Davenport since 1st May 2000 they have a son together. Of him she said
“Jack wasn't my type at all. I thought he was too young and too posh and I told him that. Plus, I couldn't deal with his dodgy bowl-cut. But he wore me down”
Of herself Michelle is very modest one saying
“Lots of actresses disappear by the time they're my age. So far, I've bucked the trend. I haven't got sucked into that 26-episode run of something like Casualty. Thankfully, my face has stopped that happening. It's not something you want to see every week on TV! I'm theatrical saffron in that way - just a light sprinkling of me here and there...”
Of her ambitions Michelle says it is to play Mama Rose in Gypsy on stage on Broadway.
“That would be checking every box in my career if I got to play that. That is my biggest ambition! Oh my, I would ROCK THAT! I need to learn how to sing first, but that is just a technicality.”
Happy Birthday Michelle and good luck with getting on stage in Gypsy.

Background Information
Sophia "Sophie" Grace Turner is the twin sister of Timmy Turner, she was born 5 minutes after Timmy, making her the younger twin. Sophie may seem to be girly on the outside, but she's actually a tomboy on the inside, she likes girl stuff, but she also likes boy stuff like playing videos games, reading comics books, etc;
Timmy and Sophie have a close bond ever since they were born, they're inseparable so they're rarely seen apart. Due of being twins, one knows how the other is feeling, and what the other twin is thinking, and Sophie and Timmy always have each other's back. Because of this, Timmy and Sophie are known as the "Turner Twins".
Unfortunately, they feel their parents are playing favoritism because they were actually expecting a daughter than twins, so when Sophie was born after Timmy, they always favorite her over her brother, even though they love both twins equally, but Timmy doesn't resent it since Sophie always assured him she doesn't like how their parents favors her over him when they're supposed to love them equally.
Unlike her brother who gets F's and bad grades, Sophie has good grades in school, getting straight A+, so she's very smart. She isn't afraid to get dirty as she loves to play sports. But she is annoyed with Tristan Tang, one of the most popular and handsome boy in school, her former crush and the twin brother of Trixie Tang, and Remy Buxaplenty because they both have a huge crush on her and she tries to avoid them.
She is also the only character who isn't afraid of Vicky as she stands up for herself and her twin brother, which annoys Vicky because Sophie isn't afraid of her. She is also the only girl who Chester McBadbat doesn't mind hanging out with since they're best friends and Chester, alongside A.J, knew Sophie isn't like most girls.
Sophie has a habit of twitching whenever someone, mostly Timmy, says, "What could possibly go wrong?", meaning something bad is going to happen, so it's a warning system for Sophie and those around her. Sophie also has a beautiful singing voice and hopes when she grows up, she'll become a famous singer, just like her idol and favorite singer, Chip Skylark.
Sophie has the perfect combination of beauty and brains, so she's kinda like Belle from Beauty and the Beast, she's a bookworm and she focuses on books or playing sports but remains clueless because almost every boy in school wants to date her since she's one of the prettiest girls in school who can rival against Trixie Tang's. Unlike Timmy, Sophie doesn't care about getting popular, she enjoys being herself, so even though she's not popular of being born in a rich and wealthy family, she is unknowingly popular for her natural beauty.
Because of her mother's terrible cooking, Sophie teaches herself or watching TV shows or reading cookbooks of how to cook delicious food for herself, her twin brother and their father. Despite of being a 10-year-old girl, she is actually very strong, no doubt inherited it from her mother, she can also be intimidating when someone pushes her buttons and makes her angry, like how she punches Francis to leave her brother alone, making him afraid of her, no doubt she got it from Vicky after some of her influence rubbed off on her.
Trivia
• Sophie's birthday is March 21, which makes her an Aries (planet Mars) in the horoscope.
• Sophie's favorite colors are blue, purple and pink.
• Sophie is right-handed since her brother is left-handed.
• Sophie's most common wish has been to make "everything back to normal", considering the dire consequences of many of her brother's previous granted wishes before that. Although she does say it with Timmy by saying, "We wish everything was back to normal".
• Unlike her brother, she doesn't have buck teeth since her grandfather, Pappy, was able to remove the pacifier from her, but forgot to do the same for Timmy due to him forgetting where he is and wonder where he was, causing Timmy to develop buck teeth by sucking on a pacifier too much. So even though they're identical twins, the only way to tell them apart was by their teeth and the clothes they wear.
• Since Timmy and Sophie are twins, they have Cosmo and Wanda as their godparents since only married fairies are assigned to twins while fairies that are single are assigned to the only child.
• Sophie has been to therapy with Timmy. The twins have been going to therapy possibly since they were five because there is a picture of them (and Gary, from their imagination) in therapy.
• Like Timmy, Sophie can also be able to mimic both Wanda and Cosmo's voices too.
• Even though Sophie is the younger twin, she is more responsible than Timmy, who, despite being the older twin, is irresponsible.

Keeping the love alive
Tumblr media
Have you ever wanted more sexual intimacy than your partner? Have you felt pressured for more sexual intimacy than you wanted? If so, you might have mismatched sexual desire but it doesn’t have to be this way forever. Whether you’re in a same sex or mixed sex relationship or dating, here’s a few tips that will help you become more intimately matched.
There’s usually a HDP (higher desire partner) for sexual intimacy and a LDP (lower desire partner) for sexual intimacy according to David Schnarch (Intimacy and Desire) Home » Crucible 4 Points. There can also be mismatched desire for who wants what for dinner; steak or tofu? Or what to do for the weekend, chores? Or a car trip? Sexual intimacy is just one other area where you and your partner are different and that’s ok. With a little understanding and negotiation, things can feel better for both of you. Here’s how…
Let’s check in on a few things first: how’s your relationship outside the “bedroom”? John Gottman refers to the Four Horsemen which can erode any relationship. The Gottman Institute | A research-based approach to relationships Is there contempt, stonewalling, defensiveness, or criticism in your relationship? If so, this will create a lack of warmth and openness therefore creating a barrier to emotional and sexual intimacy. Create a TEAM approach in order to cultivate friendliness and warm heartedness in your relationship. Think of your relationship like a garden. These four horsemen are weeds that grow and choke out any possibility of having a beautiful flower garden (ie. sexual intimacy). Stop the “weeds” from taking over your relationship garden, water it with attention, appreciation and positivity, then your relationship garden has a better chance of blooming emotionally and sexually.
Take time for your relationship. So many people make time to workout, help kids with homework, clean the garage, go to work, see friends and family (all of which is important) but where do you as a couple come into the picture? Last? For many couples their relationship is last on their “to do” list and they’re exhausted by the time they go to bed each night. What you make a priority in your life will thrive and grow stronger, your relationship is no different. How do you show your partner that they are the most important thing in your world? For ideas, look no further than the Five Love Languages quiz by Gary Chapman. Discover Your Love Language - The 5 Love Languages®
The five ways you like to be shown love according to Gary are: words of affirmation, acts of service, physical touch, quality time or gifts. Share with your partner how you feel most loved and find out which of these are most important for your partner, then give them to each other. For example, if you had a birthday coming up and I asked you what kind of birthday cake you would like and you said “chocolate cake with chocolate frosting” and I brought you strawberry cheesecake (my favorite) would you be thrilled? Happy? Or disappointed? You’d probably feel like I didn’t hear you or care about what you desired. Therefore, give your partner what they want regarding their Love Language. You’ll hit the mark and make them happy. Then you’ll both win.
Start one step at a time toward creating intimacy. Your love life didn’t disappear over night and it won’t (probably) come back over night. Consistency is key in proving to each other that you’re in this together.
Another helpful tip is to think about your relationship like a 3 layer cake with a table as the foundation. (Created by my colleagues Lisa Thomas at Online Couch Counseling - Couple and Sex Therapy Services and Neil Cannon at Dr. Neil Cannon Sex and Relationship Therapist in Denver, CO) What kinds of things do you need for a strong relationship foundation? Trust? Honesty? Love? Respect? Create your own list. Then the first layer of the cake would be “hugs and kisses” activities…what else would you add to this list of needs? Perhaps holding hands or putting an arm around each other would feel lovely. The second layer of the cake are “making out behaviors”…what other fun things would you add to this list? Maybe some naked cuddling or deep kisses. Write down more of your ideas. The third layer of your relationship cake are “sexual intimacy” items…what do you like to do intimately with each other? What would you like to add? Be creative. Start at the bottom of the relationship cake, don’t forget the foundation, and work on the area that seems to need the most attention. Yes, it may feel awkward, just like anything you haven’t done for awhile (the gym?) but have fun with it and be playful. Remember, you’re on the same TEAM, work together.
Try these 3 tips to create more connection and watch your emotional and physical intimacy grow, flourish and feel more satisfying for both of you. Remember this is adult play; flirt, woo, have fun, nurture each other and watch your garden come alive and bloom.

Stepping Stones - Chapter 2
Chapter links: 1
Summary: Y/N and Arthur share a delightful life, one that isn’t perfect but wholly theirs. When his struggles take a serious turn, she's surprised by the toll it exacts. Though the steps they'll have to take aren't easy, walking them together makes all the difference.
Warnings: Angst, Swearing, Struggles with mental illness
Words: 3,739
A/N: Once again, a heartfelt thanks to @sweet-nothings04 for offering to beta-read this story and her encouragement. Her contributions have been invaluable! Also, thank you guys for your support! I hope you continue to enjoy this story. And don’t worry: there may be angst - but there’s love, too.
If you have any thoughts or questions, please comment, feel free to message me, or send me an ask! I’m still working on requests and Way Back Home!
Tumblr media
Y/N wasn't used to being searched. It'd last happened at the District Courthouse when she'd gotten in the wrong line and nearly wound up in the jury room for a murder trial. At least the stout woman in Arkham's visitor entrance lobby was more pleasant than the bailiffs.
Unassuming in a white polo shirt and black pants, her nametag introduced her as Gladys, and the split "I Can Help!" sticker along the top cemented her as a fixture. She was friendly for a Gothamite, commenting on the sunny weather while unceremoniously dumping the contents of Y/N's handbag onto a plastic table pad. Asking about the ride over as she politely ignored tampons and confiscated a nail file. She spelled Y/N's name back to her before jotting it on the sign-in sheet and offered a genuine smile. "You have a nice time with your husband, dear. Just check out with me before you leave."
Visitor's badge pinned above her left breast, Y/N adjusted the collar of her red silk blouse, ensured the heart pendent around her neck was centered, and pushed through the door marked "Visitation."
Her kitten heels click-clacked across the checkerboard linoleum floor. The cafeteria was large, like an elementary school gymnasium without the scoreboards. Lack of funding had turned the once pristine walls to the off-white of a bathtub that had seen too few scrubbings. Large windows dotted them in sets of two, each covered with grate from the inside. Metal fans were riveted to their frames, a poor attempt to compensate for the lack of fresh air. To her left, six rows of steel tables stretched halfway across the room, about a third full of staff and patients, family members and friends. A metal buffet stood to her right, along with a sign stating a menu of beef cutlets and gravy would be served at 5:30 PM. A pony wall separated a family area on the far end. She spotted a patient with his wife and daughter watching cartoons together, ones that were old enough for Y/N to have grown up on.
It struck her how average the place felt, similar to the hospital back home she'd spent far too many hours in. It made sense: the people here were patients like any other, even if they were under lock and key. When she headed to the aluminum coffee urn on a rickety steel cart, there was a woman, around thirty, making conversation with a new wave chick, holding a ragged teddy bear and pulling her hair. Their eyes met and Y/N attempted a friendly smile. Once she'd purchased two cups, she sat by a window and crossed her legs, foot swinging back and forth as she sipped the stale liquid.
She tried to quell her nervous anticipation. Due to his time of admittance, Arthur's forty-eight-hour observation period had stretched late into Thursday night, well after visiting hours. Tasks big and small had punctuated the wait. One of Arthur's clients called to confirm a birthday party, and Y/N, hazy from lack of sleep, explained there'd been a family emergency.
Then it dawned on her that she'd have to find Arthur's gig list, which meant rummaging through his desk, a private space she'd respected since presenting him with it for their anniversary. Thank god he no longer locked the drawers, because she had no idea where he kept the key. (There were only so many hiding places in their three-room apartment, but she had no desire to search every nook and cranny.) The yellow legal pad resided in the top left drawer, under a prop catalog and kraft paper notebook. After ringing Gary and asking him to fill in ("I'm not sure I can do all these, but I can mention them at HaHa's." "That'd be great but don't get yourself in trouble. And, please, leave out Randall."), she telephoned eight households and three businesses with his contact information and apologies.
She worked extra hours in the evening to make up for the time she'd inevitably take off when Arthur was home, an arrangement that wasn't strictly legal, but she didn't see the harm in. Her colleagues graciously ignored the number of personal calls she made, to ask how Arthur was doing and learn about policies. While he wasn't yet rational, staff said, he was cooperative. Well, mostly cooperative. He'd eaten breakfast and referred to everyone as sir or ma'am, but he'd also caused a ruckus when he'd come to and found his wedding ring missing. They'd made an exception to the no jewelry rule and given it back. Personal clothing wasn't permitted, either, besides underwear, and toiletries were out of the question. It irked her - he deserved the dignity of his own hairbrush - but she didn't want to single him out by arguing for further favors. So she shuttled over a week's worth of briefs on her lunch break, chest tight as she gave it to the man with headphones at reception.
Despite the setting, despite the weight of not knowing what mood he'd be in, a thrill bubbled through her veins. Whenever a silhouette appeared behind the glue chip glass of the patient entrance, her pulse skipped. Y/N knew it was silly to expect a lot this first visit but she couldn't help it. She missed him. She missed him. Like it had been thirty days instead of three.
It took about six minutes for the door to crack an inch, and a full ten seconds for it to open completely. An orderly propped his weight against it, pointing in her general direction with his head. She stood and smoothed her palm down her A-line skirt, ensured the hem was at her knee. Maybe it was selfish, perhaps even foolish, but she hoped the surprise would be a highlight of Arthur's day, make him feel better, and she hoped seeing him would be one of hers. He was still her partner, after all. Still her Arthur. That would never change.
Clad in white scrubs and white shoes and about twenty feet away, Arthur stepped over the threshold and scanned the room. She gave him a modest wave when she caught his eye. His approach was more tentative than she would have liked, his steps shorter than usual, fists balled at his sides. As he drew closer, she noted the oiliness of his hair, the two-day black and grey stubble on his chin. His crow's feet had grown deeper, his eyelids slightly purple. Exhaustion dripped from every pore. The cut on his forehead had scabbed over into a thin line, quite modest considering its origin and how much he'd bled.
But he was as beautiful to her as always. The hint of a smile tipped her mouth. "Hi, Arthur."
"Hi," he said lowly. A reservation she barely recognized clouded his light green irises.
Part of her began to suspect popping in like this had been a mistake. Giving up wasn't in her nature, however, especially when it came to the love of her life. She forged ahead, closing the gap between them. Dr. Kellerman had advised her to let Arthur set the pace of their visits, to offer support while respecting his boundaries. Yet, touching him had become as vital to her as breathing, and it didn't occur to her to ask for permission before she reached to cup his face.
His skin felt papery under her fingertips, and red, flakey spots of dermatitis bloomed next to his nose and below his eye. He smelled of cheap bar soap and detergent, though whiffs of his woodsy masculine scent lurked underneath. But his clothes were clean and fit him well, better than half his own wardrobe. "I'm so happy to see you," she said, tracing his sharpened cheeks.
He nodded weakly, lips pursed into a grimace of disbelief. "Good."
"I got us some coffee. We can sit here or on one of the sofas."
"Here's fine."
She took his hand and led him to their table, itching for him to entwine their fingers, lamenting a little when he didn't. While he followed closely, his posture radiated tension like an oven radiated heat. Rather than the gait they'd adopted over the years, he moved as if he was afraid to touch her, as if he feared she'd disappear. Or reject him. Once he was situated and stirring sugar into his cup, she sat beside him and bumped their legs, refusing to let his fears go unchallenged. "How's your room?"
"It's okay. Just me. I'm not there much." He blew lightly on his steaming brew. "I haven't seen this part of the hospital before."
Y/N arched her brow. "No?"
"Penny had trouble getting over here to visit. When I had episodes."
Flabbergasted, a huff of disapproval escaped her. Arthur had been in out Arkham six or seven times, and Penny hadn't made it over once? According to Arthur, she'd been sick for a while, but what about twenty years ago? Even later, they hadn't had any money, which meant she would've had to care for herself while he was away. If she had had the wherewithal to go through the process of committing her son, couldn't she have at least called a cab? Y/N pushed her ire aside, not wanting it to affect Arthur. "Did you see your therapist today?"
"Mhm."
"Is he good? Does he listen to you?"
"He's fine."
She took a long drink. "Did you get the underwear I brought over?"
"Yeah." he sighed, tipping his head back to stare at the ceiling. "They wrote my name on the waistband."
"I'll get new ones," she said, tapping her chin in contemplation, opting for a little cheer. "Donahue's has a racy number from Mad Mod. How'd you feel about zig-zag bikinis in maroon?" Instead of the laugh she'd craved, the incredulous smirk he saved for ridiculous suggestions, his knees quaked, bouncing and bouncing, freshly wound springs in bleached cotton.
None of this was going as she'd pictured.
Self-consciousness was atypical for her, a personality trait she'd shed in her late twenties after a failed marriage and the beginning of her parents' declines. Being with Arthur felt secure, open, even during his worst days. When he'd discovered his mother's Arkham file, learned the details of his abuse. Or the weeks after she'd passed and any chance of finding out more about himself, the truth about his father and chance to get a crumb of paternal affection, had died along with her.
Gathered at this table with her husband and bad coffee, old insecurities returned with the force of a subway careening at full speed. She sought to encourage him but didn't want to dismiss his feelings, harken back when he'd been burdened with "Happy." Her questions were obviously getting on his nerves - she was at a loss as to how he'd react to more of them. Their banter had vanished. The clues she had to follow were based on an old map, comprised of well-worn paths to joy she could walk with her eyes closed. Now those paths were overgrown with weeds.
But she wouldn't stop trying to trim them. Some shears were in reach: a woman's magazine lay abandoned on a nearby table, famous for its relationship quizzes and bedroom advice. She snagged it, scooted her chair closer to Arthur, and flipped through the glossy pages until the headline "Are You Meant To Be?" screamed in bright pink font. She cleared her throat and read aloud. "'You and your husband are shipwrecked on a desert island. You can take any household item with you. What item would you bring?'" She paused, then went with what first came to mind. "Toothbrush. I can't expect you to kiss me when I-"
"Why are you acting like this?"
Her gaze locked on him. "Like what?"
"Like I haven't fucked everything up."
Automatically, she reached for his thigh, not heeding the angry twitch of his jaw. "You haven-"
He batted her arm away, inadvertently knocking the magazine to the floor. "Don't lie to me," he rasped. "I don't like you seeing me like this. I don't want you to have to come visit and pretend." He wiped his nose with the back of his hand, an anger she recognized as shame dripping from every word. "Can you please just go?"
Pain lanced through her, pain she hadn't felt since her father, deep in the throes of dementia, had accused her of stealing from him. Her lashes lowered to hide her hurt. Arthur acting like this was proof of how out of sorts he was, how much he was struggling with his illnesses. But it didn't make his behavior any easier to take, even if she firmly believed it should. She had to try to accept him as he was in the moment. To forgive him and herself for pressing him too far, too quickly. To listen to his request for time, the way he'd listened to hers after the Murray show, giving her the gift of patience and understanding. A gift he also deserved.
Pushing herself to stand, she glanced at the orderly and lay a gentle palm on Arthur's back. To her relief, he didn't retreat. "I'm here if you need me," she said softly. "If you feel up to it, give me a ring. We could both use a joke or two." Fingertips caressed his distended shoulder, and she pecked the crown of his head, breathed in the oily musk of his scalp. Not entirely pleasant but him all the same. "We'll see each other soon. Get some rest and remember I love you."
~~~~~
"This woman wandered in off the street the other day. Pointy-toed shoes, fur coat, pillbox hat like she thinks she's Jackie Kennedy..." Perched on Y/N's side of the bed, Patricia dunked her orange pekoe teabag, gave it a good squeeze, laid it on her saucer. "She wanted to sue the Wayne Estate for damages to her Bentley, because Thomas Wayne had broken a legally binding oral agreement - she must have read a legal thriller and gotten haughty - to fix the potholes in Old Gotham when he was mayor. I told her to complain to Public Works, but she decided to camp out at your old desk to clip her nails. Finally, Matt had enough and offered her a phone call to Gotham PD or ten bucks for her trouble." She shook her head with a chuckle. "What a jackass. Retirement can't come soon enough."
"Don't wish your life away," Y/N retorted, inadvertently quoting a pamphlet she'd gotten from the Arkham gift shop, "Care for the Caregiver." The title had made her balk: Arthur bathed himself, fed himself, knew who she was. But it had been a straw to hold onto, albeit feebly. She retrieved a curved, wooden hanger from the closet and stuck one end in the arm of her freshly ironed blouse. "Besides, you've been working since you were sixteen, right? I give it a year before you'd go stir-crazy."
"Actually, I've been thinking about taking a class or two at the learning center," said Patricia.
"Oh, really? What kind? Pottery, advanced baking, conversational Spanish?"
"How to find nicer friends."
Hand on her hip, Y/N smirked over her shoulder to find Patricia's teacup raised for a toast. "Let me know what you learn," Y/N said, hoisting the laundry basket onto the bed. "I could use a few pointers." She batted the older woman with a dress sock, then fished for its companion. She shook them out. Aligned the cuffs and toes, smoothed the nylon with the side of her hand, folded the fabric into thirds. The top drawer's left ball-bearing slide stuck when she tried to pull it open, and she made a mental note to ask Arthur to take a look at it.
Without warning, a profound sense of loss swept over her, flushing her cheeks, her forehead. He'd been gone almost a week, the longest they'd been apart aside from conferences and training. Her days had been blessedly busy but dragged on nonetheless, slow as the secondhand on her watch when the battery had to be replaced.
Arthur had gotten in the habit of leaving a note whenever he had an early gig or errand to run, just a few words stating where he was, that he'd be home later, that he loved her. Though she knew he was in Arkham, she couldn't stop her heart from expecting one when she made morning coffee. She ached to pull him inside before he lit a second cigarette, and for his teasing kisses when he'd resist. The way he brushed his teeth from side-to-side, eschewing her method of small circles and daily flossing. Last night, a hot flash had kept her awake, and she'd longed for the feel of his strong, slender hands rubbing refrigerated lotion into her calves, a trick he'd learned to quiet his mother when she'd gone through what he politely referred to as The Change.
Y/N had never wanted to love someone so much she needed them, but Arthur had made it safe. And now here she was, anguishing over a stubborn piece of furniture. She gave the knob another good, hard heave until it popped off into her palm. With a groan, she slapped it on the top of the dresser, between his wallet and her jewelry box.
A gentle hold on her elbow halted her. "The clothes'll keep," Patricia said.
The compassion in her voice, subtle chords that would sound like judgement to others, loosened Y/N's stance. Granted permission for her to take a break from coping and give into grief. Slinking down onto the mattress, she picked up Arthur's blue house pants from the mound of panties and trousers and hugged them to her breast.
"Your anniversary is coming up," Patricia continued. "Will Arthur be home for it?"
"Yes. Three weeks is all the insurance will pay for, and Dr. Kellerman said we were lucky to get that." Most patients were discharged after two, even if they had nowhere else to go.
"How is he? Do you think he'll be ready then?"
"I'm not sure. He barely comes to the phone." She'd tried letters, too. Written on her office letterhead, declarations of her support and affection that were as stilted as the motions she regularly drafted. Something for him to read when they couldn't speak, when they couldn't touch. But he hadn't responded.
Although Y/N was the sole person he'd added to his list of allowed visitors, he hadn't signed the release. Sure, she'd learn the details of his care if a court remanded him, but she wasn't about to have him declared legally incompetent, not unless everything went to shit. But she had deduced his schedule by calling and asking if he could come to the phone. He's in group, Mrs. Fleck, the charge nurse had let slip. Or, You can try in an hour. He should be out of one-on-one by then.
Therapy three times a day. Safety and daily living skills. Goal setting before bed. No wonder he hadn't had the energy to say good night.
"I know what you're going through," Patricia said. She stretched to put her empty teacup on the nightstand. "When Robert got back from Korea, he kept his distance. Buried himself in starting his business, was gone most nights on extra late repair jobs, worked, worked, worked. It was nearly a year before he really came home. But he made it and Arthur will, too."
The intimacy behind the disclosure was a welcome invitation, a hook that tugged at Y/N's core and confirmed honesty would be all right. She drew a shaky breath, fiddled with a loose thread on the hem of Arthur's pajamas. "I thought I'd seen everything. Losing my mother, going out of my mind with my father. Those were finalities I couldn't prevent." Rapid blinking fought the wetness of her eyes. She swiped at them with the heel of her hand. "If you had seen him, Patricia... I just hope Arthur understands. I don't want him to think I wanted him to leave."
"Listen to me." Patricia adopted her mentor tone and hugged her tight around the middle. "There's no way he'd believe that. Remember when we doubled at Kao Wah? When we were in the restroom, and he ordered your favorite dish without having to ask what it was? He adores you." She swept her hand through the air as if she could sweep away Y/N's woes. "You promised to take care of him through everything. You did what you had to to keep him safe. You couldn't have done anything else, Y/N. Don't doubt yourself."
After some moments Y/N nodded. "You know, my parents had a swimming hole on our property. When I was young, I used to skip stones across it and make wishes. For my doll's arm to mend, for my parents to say safe, for my sister's surgeries to go well." She chuckled and dabbed at her cheeks with Arthur's house pants. "I guess it was like praying, which I never had use for." The slightest smile edging her lips, she turned to Patricia. "Let's go to Gotham Park and throw some rocks."
~~~~~
The next morning, eleven percent of her worries cast away by a currently sore right arm, Y/N walked past Sherwood Florist, a closet of a shop around the corner from her office. Storefront freshly washed, robust floral arrangements on display in large, spotless windows, and an owner in horn-rimmed glasses checking the temperature of the nearest cooler, she decided to stop in. Yes, the florist told her, an expression of dubious curiosity on his face. They delivered to Arkham. Just include the patient's full name and ward in the address, and it'd be sent this afternoon.
She chose a squat, plastic vase filled with daisies and a yellow enclosure card with a bumblebee in the lower left corner. A bit cutsie for her taste, but it was the only neutral choice among birthdays and congratulations. She pondered what to write, pushing back the urge to ask him to reach out. A minute later, she put her pen to the cardstock. "I miss you like thread misses a needle. (Good thing you're the comedian - that was terrible.) You're not alone in this. You have my whole heart. - Y/N."

RIP SALLY KELLERMAN
1937-2022
Tumblr media
Sally Kellerman was an actress and singer born in Long Beach, California.  Kellerman's acting career spanned over 60 years. Her role as Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan in Robert Altman's film M*A*S*H (1970) earned her an Oscar nomination.
“I always wanted to be an actress. My mother told me to get a job as an elevator operator because Dorothy Lamour was discovered that way.”
Tumblr media
She made her film debut in 1957′s Reform School Girl. Two years later she made her small screen debut on “Playhouse 90.”
Tumblr media
She was on the Desilu backlot to film an episode of “My Three Sons” in December 1963. In “Steve and the Viking” she played a 17 year-old Danish Girl and acted opposite Fred MacMurray and a former-Fred, William Frawley.
Tumblr media
A year later, she was back at Desilu in “The Greatest Show on Earth”, a circus-themed series on which executive producer Lucille Ball herself had guest-starred four months earlier. The episode was titled “This Train Don't Stop Till It Gets There”.
Tumblr media
In September 1966, Kellerman played Dr. Elizabeth Dehner on Desilu’s “Star-Trek”. The episode, titled “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, was actually the show’s second pilot, but marked Kellerman’s only appearance on the space series.
Tumblr media
In 1969, as Desilu was sold to Paramount, Kellerman appeared on a show that was salvaged from the canceled pile and made into a hit by Lucille Ball: “Mannix”. Kellerman played Diana Walker, the daughter of a newspaper tycoon and Mannix' old flame in “The Solid Gold Web.”
Tumblr media
In October 1970, Kellerman finally shared camera time with her former boss, Lucille Ball, on an episode of “The Merv Griffin Show.”  Kellerman and Ball were joined on the couch by Gary Morton, Ross Martin, and Guy Lombardo.
Tumblr media
Kellerman and Ball were just two of the glamourous screen stars that were featured on “Happy 100th Birthday, Hollywood” in 1987.
Kellerman died from heart failure at the age of 84. At the time of her death, she had dementia. Kellerman was twice married and had three children.

[Art by me, refs i found on google. Character is mine and my comfort character]
(Back story on Jay Clef Wolfwood)
He doesnt remember much of his childhood. His adoptive father said he was found half drowned in the river. Clearly unwanted by whatever parent he was with before. If it werent for Agent Stareye, a GOC field anget he wouldnt have seen his first birthday. Since then his mind was in a fuzz until he started highschool. He can recall his fathers coworkers looking after him but never seeming happy about it. People always tense around him... never seeming comfortable with his company.. and the list, oh fuck the list, he had to live by for his "saftey" according to his father.
Never be in any pictures. Its a way to be tracked.
Never walk alone in the woods. Its too dangerous
Never tell anyone about what dad does for work
Never talk about dads friends
Never talk about what dad does
Theres more but he slowly outgrew them. As he finished highschool he entered a special collage the GOC provided for him and others like him. He was top of his class. He further advanced his education and became a science doctor, much to his fathers pride, but then... the incident happened. He was waiting for his father to return home when a reality bending anomaly was spotted near the house. He didnt notice until he walked outside to get something from the back garden. There it was staring him down. They entered a strange staring contest before he took a step further. The anomaly seemed shocked and growled at him, then the shot rang out. He whipped his head back and saw his father with his work rifle.
"Inside! Now!!" His father barked with a panicked tone.
Jay wasted no time and bolted into his childhood home. His father looked him over and hugged him close, explaining what happened.
"But.. nothing happened? It just stood there..." jay replied confused then shrunk into himself at his fathers look
"You.. didnt notice the world literally melting around you? Oh fuck oh fuck fuckfuckfuck!!" His father started to pace and tug at his hair.
"Father.. dad whats wrong?" He was scared, father never acted like this...
"Pack clothes and anything you need desperately. I... i need to call in a favor-" and off his father went.
Jay did as he was told and hurried to pack bags of clothes, blankets that calmed him, worn stuffed animals, all drawings, pictures of dad and his coworkers, and anything that would keep him sane.
He and father started to load up the car just as dads radio started to go off.
For the first time ever, his father turned it off.
They drove for hours after the incident until they reached a cabin across the country. His father has been quiet the entire time but looked to him with tears in his eyes.
"Listen my little bird.. you wont understand this yet but.. the person who lives here... she'll care for you okay? Shes gunna get you a good job and keep you safe. Please do not, and i mean this, do not under any circumstances tell them about me or what happened. You will be killed if anyone found out about who i am or what happened. Never forget your safety list either okay? I love you baby bird.. i hope you live well.." his father held his shoulders firmly as he started to cry.
Jay was frozen as tears silently streamed down his cheeks. He had so many things he wanted to say, things to ask, but no words came out.
A woman with bright red hair and her husband came out in a hurry to help unload the car while the father and son had their moment.
It wasnt until jay was on the porch and watching his father figure drove away. He broke down screaming and crying. He never knew it then but as his world broke so did the world around him.
The world gray-scaled and started to crack. Pitch black horns sprouted from his forehead and curved like twisted dear antlers. His eyes blazed different, glitching colors and a third eye opened.
The husband took a risk and hugged him tightly, urging him to calm down. It.. it took some time before things settled, the world back to normal... but jay wasnt. There were stubs where his horns were and a faint line of his third eye remained.
The kind husband, Gary, took him inside and sat him on the guest bed. Gary and Rose, the wife, began to explain what they could. That his father's work hunted down anomalies and he would be forced to kill him were his work to find out. Rose was his brother and worked for a different organization called the SCP foundation. They protected and contained anomalies like the one in the woods.
"But... i wasnt the one father killed. Why... why did he leave me here?" Jay asked through hiccups.
"Well.. that anomaly was a reality bender. It makes things change around you. You never noticed and even scared it to backing down. No one can just... not be affected. You would most likely be killed.. the place your father works for hates anomalies and he wouldnt be able to hide you. The SCP foundation would allow us to not only give you a home but make you at least a class b researcher. They would treat you well given our status as class a doctors."
As rose explained jay just nodded numbly. He wouldnt be seeing his father ever again for his own safety. It felt so.. selfish. That was the man who took him in when no one wanted him, raised him pasted the age he was about to be denied, given a home and love. Now he understands why he was abandoned, their birth parent knew he was different and tried to kill him.
Soon the lovely couple left him to unpack and settle in.. he kept the photos hidden away but didnt get rid of them. Just as he put the last blanket on... well on his new bed there was a soft knock at the door.
"Hey.. jay um.. a doctor is here just to make sure youre okay. She wont tell anyone unless we say. Shes nice, rose works with her." Gary spoke softly with a... pitiful expression.
Jay nodded and walked to the dining room with a stuffed deer plush hes always had for comfort.
The doctor, Dr felleen, made sure his mind was still in one piece and that he had no hidden injuries. He was completely fine so to speak.
Time would pass and he would adjust to his new home, gary and rose maple were kind to him. They taught him alot about where he would first show up during a "bring your child to work day" then shadow gary, who was hot shit on campus. Soon he would have his own office at Site [redacted] which he excelled in. He could make any SCP talk. Sure his coworkers were uneased around him, like something bad would happen if they stayed, but he didnt mind. Eventally he was forced to transfer to Site [redacted] and sadly forced to move away from gary and rose. He left on good terms and promises to keep in touch. He takes most of his things, just in case he must come back and takes a moment to look at photos of his old adoptive father. He smiles and kisses the photo.
Hes gotta go, Dr Kondraki is gunna be his new site director! He promised to show him around, something about 05 loving his work and promoting him to class a? Oh well. Things seem to be looking up!
[More to follow soon!]

Mondo Multiverse.
Look, we tried.
We decided, upon the first issue of Doomsday Clock that we'd write an overview of the whole thing whenever it was completed. It shipped this week, and we wrote most of our notes in preparation for a reread and planned to turn out the whole thing this weekend.
Then we began the reread. After two issues, we had to give up.
There's nothing inherently....wrong with the book. Obviously conceptually it's absolutely amoral and a further testament to how embarrassingly bad at publishing and creating innovative comics DC have become that they need to whip whatever they can out of a 30 year old Alan Moore story.
It's just. ..ordinary. It's the most superficial reading of Watchmen possible. To consider Doomsday Clock a sequel is to ignore so many of the themes, innovations, motivations, concepts and the people who make up what makes Watchmen more significant than a repackaging of the acquired Charlton characters.
So, rather than dwelling on the absolute artistic failure of DC, we'll drop off our original notes then meet you back here with a positive note.
'Well, It's About Time.'
We know exactly where we were on May the 25th.
It was our birthday. The shop was steaming hot, we were ploughing through energy drinks, we'd asked a supermodel friend to come hang around the shop in her pants. Friends mailed over mp3s of their singing 'happy birthday'. There was cake. On the whole, it was a good day.
Except for the new comics that shipped that week, which appeared to be designed to burn the tempers of fandom. Our inboxes were aflame with the revelation that Captain America was a member of Hydra. Best known to the world, of course, as the extension of The Nazis.
As preparations for the night's birthday began to come together and we ran through the reorders due to come in, the next hammer blow of news came in. Inbetween cute blondes and greetings texts, we skipped reading anything from the new comics so were told second hand that DC: Rebirth featured the introduction of the Watchmen into the DC Universe via the Dr Manhattan series from the 'Before Watchmen' series.
We shook our heads and went to meet up with our friends. It would be tomorrow's problem.
If the amount of detail about our private life seems excessive, well, it appears relevant to add some humanity to something as grounded as Watchmen. There's a distinct absence of it in all the post Before Watchmen material, after all.
Watchmen has lots of stories. The tales are borne from human reactions to the things bigger than them. Its about lots of things, relationships, percepction, maturing, forgiveness, psychosis, Doomsday Clock has one. The problem is that Doomsday Clock's story doesn't demand the vast of Watchmen to be told. Manhattan could be Captain Atom, or The Spectre. There are no people in this story. Merely plot devices being acted out by vehicles in the shape of characters.
The next thing to happen with DC including Watchmen into the DC Universe is 'The Button'. Tom King has drawn a lot of acclaim in the Tights N Fights world for his work on Batman, The Vision and Mr Miracle. This is not to be filed among those works. About the most exciting thing to be remembered is one of the cover variations wasn't available in the UK for a short period and went for more than cover price for a while.
It's winter 2017.
We're staying with a sexy friend on a comic buying adventure. Her green hair, accent and cat provides distraction from the cold and realisation that we're in the shadow of a hospital paid for by Jimmy Saville. Later we'll be shanghaied into a ludicrous story featuring a treasure trove of comics rotting to pulp kept in a series of stables. On the way to a comic shop we we work out how to download a rom of Rival Schools 2 to our hacked PSP.
We chat with the owner of the main comic shop in town. Discussion turns to the just shipped Doomsday Clock 1.
'So have you read it yet?'
'Yes.'
'Any....good?'
'It's popular. Lots of people are buying it.'
'Er-'
'You can have a Gary Frank print and a badge if you buy a copy. I'll even do the lenticular covet for regular price if you like.'
It's winter 2019. Sitting in a cafe. The Conservative party has just won their biggest victory in nearly 100 years. With a crushed sense of faith in humanity, we buy a digital copy of a comic that shouldn't exist published by a company who traded integrity in for buttons decades ago via a distribution channel owned by a company determined to turn the world into slave labour. A company that's just avoided paying back billions of taxes thanks to the defeat of the Labour party.
We've read Doomsday Clock 12. Nothing has happened in any issue of this comic that required the use of the Watchmen characters. We've been waiting 2 years to wait for Dr Manhattan to realise Superman is the bestest ever, apparently. This isn't a comic about people. It's a series of continuity fixes that wastes the talent of Gary Frank by giving him the nine panel grid to tell us about Nathaniel Dusk and why The JSA are alive.
And after all of this, we have to ask :
Was it worth it, Dan?'
Hello. Back in real time now. The main reason we couldn't get through the book was the utter lack of ambition. When you consider how Watchmen, for better or worse, set the blueprint for superhero comics for the next thirty years, you'd think something with the balls to be a literal sequel would bring anything new in the world of art that's happened subsequently to the game, but this could be any Roy Thomas JSA comic from 1984.
In fact, we'd argue the real sequel to Watchmen happened a few years back with (sorry, Alan.) Grant Morrison's Multiversity. Years in the making with no small amount of build up (Partly, we are told, via Grant having a bet with Brian Michael Bendis on who could write the most comics in a year. Just in case you were wondering why Seven Soldiers Of Victory ran quite so long.)
Multiversity takes the possibilities suggested by Watchmen and runs mental with them, taking the tropes of superhero comics and twisting them beyond recognition, not only breaking The Fourth Wall but also making you a participant, further involving you in the purest forms of The DC Universe. Frank Quitely sees the challenge of the mirror image issue of Watchmen and draws a comic that can be read in any direction.
ANY direction.
It's also sexy, irreverent, funny and somehow turns Captain Carrot into a hero. It remains, for us, the benchmark of innovation in comics since the coffee table spread from Big Numbers 2. We highly recommend it.
See Ya In The Fourth World.
