He's a 10 but he's never known darker times and he's covered the protests live at the Hatchetfield Kennel.
He is Dan Reynolds-- with Action News, weekdays at 10 pm.

Okay but with Nerdy Prudes Must Die, I think we’re finally able to establish a timeline in the Hatchetfield main canon (the three full productions, not counting Nightmare Time), even thought they’re all taking place in slightly different universes. NPMD comes first, because I think it’s Grace, Pete, and Steph’s summoning that allows the Lords in Black to be the main antagonists in TGWDLM and Black Friday. They opened the door, and it can’t be closed. Which is why Pokotho is able to influence the town as in TGWDLM, and Wiggog Y’wrath in Black Friday. In TGWDLM they’re referred to as aliens, but what other language would the characters in that musical have for an eldritch god, when they’re all very practical?
Timeline wise, I think it goes NPMD, TGWDLM, and then Black Friday. Nightmare Time strikes me as an expositionary, alternate-timeline piece, personally, which is why I’m not fitting it into the timeline.

Starkid Theory/Question ig
(Spoilers for Trail To Oregon, Firebringer, and all of the hatchetverse including nightmare time)
So, we all remember how the father in Trail to Oregon got high on snake venom and saw "the watchers with 1000 eyes" right?
Well in Nightmare time episode Watcher world we learn that that's one of the names for Bliklotep (sort of, his is the watcher with 1000s eyes, not watchers) and so it might be that TTO and the Hatchet verse might be slightly connected, or that maybe The Lords in Black are themselves connected to every universe even if that universe has nothing to do with hatchetfield
And since Pokotho is the one who started the apotheosis in The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, from a falling meteor, which in the nightmare time episode Yellow Jacket is how Pokotho becomes Otho (the scientists took some of his blue shit from an asteroid and made a human with it)
And in Firebringer Chorn is an alien from another planet who came to Earth, and says its species knows the whole history of human existence
Is it possible that Chorn could know of the Black and White and the Lord's in Black?
This is a giant fucking stretch but like... if we are assuming that TTO at least takes place in a world with Bliklotep in it, and we know Pokotho uses meteors/asteroids to take over the world (or try to take over in Yellow Jacket) in two separate instances
Is it so crazy to think that Chorn, a being from space who knows the entirety of human existence, might know of Pokotho, one of the lord's who is known to use space objects to inject his blue goo shit into the planet?
Yeah its a stretch, but at the very least it's a fun idea. If anyone had any ideas to add on please do

One thing I love about the Hatchetfield Cycle is that, even though they are fun and camp and deeply moving, they do not have happy endings. In TGWDLM and NPMD it's a classic bait-and-switch, we think we're getting a sweet ending and then someone bursts into a song that makes you go "oh. They're evil now." And BF presumably ends in nuclear winter but we do see a moment when everyone is reunited and preparing to escape the mall.
There's also levels of self-awareness and breaking the third wall. TGWDLM is obvious, but BF has General McNamara chastising the audience for being obsessed with their phones in "Monsters and Men" as well as Tom and Lex moving boxes for a scene change. NPMD has the least instances of this, and less obvious, but in "Hatchet Town" the crowd sings about how singing is simply creating opportunities for their children to get attacked, but they keep singing.
This is incredibly Brechtian and all three musicals are in the tradition of epic theatre (epic being the school of theatrical theory and not in reference to scale). A hallmark of epic theatre is denying the audience catharsis. The end of the play is not supposed to be tied up into a neatly packaged message, and you're not supposed to get lost in the story of the play. You are supposed to remember yourself so that the commentary that is happening on stage (and there is always commentary, epic theatre is deeply political) and see how it pertains to your life, the world around you. I'd argue all of Starkid's major musicals have a political point and rarely is it as subtle as it is in NPMD. I can think of three songs right now that are explicitly about being American and American cultural hypocrisy.
They also look at government, and how government fails us (very Brechtian).
Utilizing the audience and the entire theatre is often funny, but it keeps the audience from getting complacent. One of the actors hands you his half-eaten apple, that's jarring. The world of the play isn't separate from your world as an audience.
It's easy to be taken with the lore of the universe (I have theories about the Black and White, let's talk) and how great the songs are, and it's easy to say that they're good. But like. They're not just good. They're absolutely incredible modern examples of epic theatre or the next stage of epic theatre (because they do give us moments of catharsis, they just don't close with it). I don't understand how colleges are not frothing for rights to perform these plays. I have a lot more thoughts but I just wanted to get that out. It makes sense since they're all theatre kids--even if they aren't thinking "Brecht Brech Brecht" the entire time, that cathartic denial and incorporation of the audience are absolutely purposeful and not just because it's fun. These shows are amazing.

Ok Ik I already sent you one but I desperately want to know your top 5 starkid songs as welll
okay thank you for asking because i have been thinking about it
1. If I Believed (twisted): i am a dylan saunders girlie!!! sometimes i get really emotional and start poorly scream singing SCIENCE SAYS YOURE DEAD AND GONE FOREVER REASON SAYS IM TALKING TO THE AIR!!! i think i always see people rate twisted as their fave show and im like nah its not that for me and then i actually think about it for like a second and im like no this show is great
2. Join Us (And Die) (tgwdlm): i am also simply a JLB girlie!! this song FUCKS it goes HARD and UGH JLB is so goddamn talented. i also badly try and sing this constantly. i also love picturing jeff blim in the background being a hype man
3. Kick It Up A Notch (starship): we agree on this one. it’s so good. dylan saunders, jamie in the background, a fun lil joey moment, and just such a great villain song. i do love the apocalyptour rogues medley version of it slightly better, but like such a great song
4. Show Stopping Number (tgwdlm): i just like a silly fun good time with a dance break okay? sometimes my fave songs are heart wrenching and beautiful but most of the time they’re just a silly fun good time with choreo i have memorized
5. Dirty Girl (npmd): it was a toss up between this and Stutter (avpm2) but i haven’t stopped thinking about dirty girl since watching npmd. i know it’s a divisive song but it really works for me. i like how fucked up it is. i never said i had good taste
special shoutout though to the apocalyptour Rogues Medley. if i was counting like, not just songs from the musicals themselves it would be number 2. also super friends. i love super friends but i don’t think i can call it a top 5. thought about it though (i love HMB)
i’m not gonna do a fave song from each (haven’t seen me and my dick, only seen the digital ticket version of black friday and haven’t watched it again since but will soon, for some reason entirely blanking on fire bringer which is embarrassing all i can remember is i don’t really wanna do the work today)

Starkid moments where you can never quite recapture the sheer visceral feeling of seeing them happen for the first time:
• Quirrell walking onstage for the first time in AVPM
• Paul starting to sing ‘Inevitable ’at the end of TGWDLM
Feel free to add on

Watched NPMD twice yesterday, once alone and then again with my sibling/roommate when they got off work. It’s phenomenal, probably my favorite Starkid musical, which after TGWDLM is saying something! But as an asexual, every time I heard the phrase “dirty soup” the TSUNAMI of cringe that swept through my body was indescribable.

So 'Just For Once' is supposed to be a metaphor for Ruth's motivations and personality, right? Like, the lyrics generally being about wanting attention and love from other people when she normally gets ignored or passed over, and how her anxiety prevented her from doing things she wants to do (like theatre)? I haven't seen this interpretation talked about anywhere but I thought that made Just For Once really work tbh

It’s pretty hot for England atm and I have decided that for the convention I’m going to this weekend, I shall wear a long sleeved black dress, tights and turtleneck crop top on Saturday and a cosplay with multiple layers and a long wig on Sunday
I make good choices :)
