we all know that 5 years in general can help improve a voice but 5 years WITH vocal lessons can do wonders
this is showcased beautifully by jon matteson in tgwdlm and npmd. while it's clear that the reason for the improvement (which is wild! his voice was already so good and then he stepped it SO FAR up!) is the time he was given along with the lessons, i love the feel the improvement gives the characters
paul, a man notorious for hating musicals, who's 'own personal hell is being trapped inside a musical, being forced to sing and dance'. it would make sense that his voice isn't trained. after being infected, of course he has some talent, he isn't the one singing, but i would bet anything to say that before being infected, paul was tone deaf
that being said, richie's voice was much more complex, very well demonstrated by his line 'i'm not a loser' in the song 'nerdy prudes must die'. the emotion, tone, and vibrato all come through giving s beautiful impact with his voice alone.
idk, i know that the improvement comes from jon matteson himself improving, but i do think it's neat how it gives the feel that paul only could sing because of the blue shit where as richie seems like the type to scream the words to his favorite anime openings when a new episode starts.

yes, the lords in black are very silly. but can we just take a moment to appreciate how freaking terrifying they can be?? the interaction between hannah and the wiggly doll in black friday still creeps me out, the childish intonation and unsettling laugh and jolty pauses between wiggly's words are very effective. he says that he wants to eat hannah, he plans on ripping the president open and taking out his guts, he causes hundreds of deaths through the aggression caused by his toys. tinky controls time and uses it to play with people like they're toys, all the art of his goat form is so disturbing, his obsession with the spankoffskis is a big thing. "i'm gonna have the whole set in my toy box", anyone? nibby has an insatiable hunger, uses the melted flesh of pig corpses to go around hatchetfield swallowing people (like linda). he cares about nothing but his all-consuming need to eat. pokey succeeded in starting the apocolypse, using hatchetfield like a set in which to perform a musical of his own design, possessing people and using them as his stars. he wants everyone to be dead but him, controlling a hivemind of human puppets that tear each other apart and spread his infection further. blinky sees everything, refusing to let his workers blink and knowing what anyone and everyone is doing. he's the watcher with a thousand eyes, and takes enjoyment in watching bill and alice nearly kill each other.
they're honestly so unnerving, from their lack of care for human lives and bloodlust to their playful manner and habit of getting a little too invested in people. they see the citizens of hatchetfield as toys, and aren't afraid to break them. they're sadistic, violent, powerful gods.
and that's partly why i find it so funny that they choose to dress up in bright neon looking like an unhinged version of a kids' show's cast.

I am relistening to "inevitable" and we were all so desperate in 2018, looking for crumbs that paul was just pretending to be assimilated. Our homeboy wouldnt be caught dead singing (literally) let alone say to his crush "let me puke in your mouth em, just open your food bin, girl".

no rhyme or reason to them besides the fact that they caused me incredible pain.

Do you think that Paul's "Emma, I'm sorry" at the beginning of Inevitable was just Pokey mocking Emma through the voice of a person she loved? Or was it the last of Paul's individualism genuinely apologising to her because he couldn't save her?

As Holy Musical Batman once said "you must take on the guise of that which you fear most...to scare...them? yeeeeaaaah!"
Extra images in the reblogs! (Forget "is this anything?" coz this is absolutely nothing lol)

thinking about Pokey’s line “What do you want , Steph?” does that mean Pokey was behind the musical meteor that crashed into Hatchetfield for TGWDLM especially cause he’s blue too. that’s not a coincidence.

It always makes me so mad when people say the first time Paul sings is during Let It Out when he's trying to fight against the hive mind
But that's literally just not true
The first time Paul sings is when Professor Hidgens holds the group at gun point and shouts the iconic line of "SING THE BEGINNING OF MOANA!"
Sure, it's not great singing, but it's still technically singing. I mean, during Let It Out Paul is sing talking for most of it the same way he sang talk during the Moana song
"The first time Paul sings is when he's falling victim to the hive mind :( he's trying to save the earth and he fails :("
No bestie, the first time Paul sings is when he's forced to sing the opening to Moana, and also he's the one who remembers the lyrics better than anyone else despite saying he didn't like the movie
Like, even Bill ends up singing The Circle of Life, and Ted and Emma just follow Paul's lead.
Pauls, the guy who doesn't like musicals himself, first ever song is The Begining Of Moana

So I have a theory about why Inevitable is kinda like a medley of the musical and why Paul acts so differently around Emma during it, at least an in-universe explanation, not just “It’s end of the musical of course it’s a medley”
So the earliest thing hive mind Paul references is the coffee shop because it’s the first interaction between Paul and Emma that the hive mind experiences, they don’t bring up any interactions prior to that. the hive mind is just bringing up the times it saw the two of them together, it didn’t get the memories of Paul, otherwise it’d be mentioning all the personal conversations they had in an attempt to lure Emma to its side. Despite the hive mind very clearly getting the memories of Alice, otherwise it couldn’t have known about her feelings and experiences that she talked about in her song. I think the fact that Paul was so directly opposed to the idea of song and dance as a concept, not just the idea of the hive mind, made it harder for it to get into his brain and go directly against his most characteristic morals while also fighting the humanity in him. Also I think that more infected people equals more minds equals less control over specific individuals.
The hive mind has no idea what Paul and Emma’s relationship is like behind closed doors, it’s just throwing everything it’s see through the various infected until something sticks. And because it’s only seen the generally braver Paul(as brave as Paul can be) when he’s defending his friends or trying to take down the core of the hive mind, it puppets him as far more charismatic and brave than he truly is.
So yeah, I don’t know why my brain spat this out, I usually only post art, but ya know ✨neurodivergent✨

i just realized, the line "and i know it's a singular voice, paul" in "let it out" is a direct reference to pokey, whose title is 'the singular voice'. so that's neat :)

Finally colored in this post, then decided to add a few more details to it, nothing fancy-
Content Warning: Spoilers, Eye strain and Spaghetti Guts lie under the Cut
Tumblr media
And a version without The Red:
Tumblr media
(I may not have drawn Gore in a while but the rendering was actually quite fun to do tbh - might draw the rest of the cast in their respective predicaments some time soon if this gets popular, don’t tempt me)

"The old Starlight Theater... There it is. The meteor."
For those who haven't seen my past ranting and raving- I've been planning to cosplay Paul Matthews for A While now, and the place I'm volunteering at is exhibiting at a local con, so.........
(I was a FOOL and didn't get any pics with both the cardigan-pretending-to-be-a-jacket AND the mask on, so you're only getting Act 2 Paul, but I DID play around with some filters on my phone b/c why not?)
I fully plan to do this again-maybe with some more over-the-top makeup from a friend, but I honestly loved the effect that, as long as I had the mask on, it just looked like blue lower eyeliner. Maybe I'll stain the disposable mask a bit next time? All my reusable masks have too much flair for this loser the wrong kind of patterns, so I've just been grabbing these nice paper ones.
