Hav Plenty? I’ll pass. *REVIEW*

Brief synopsis: Lee Plenty is house-sitting for his friend Hav Savage. The pair have a frigid relationship but attraction seems to bubble under the surface. When Hav invites Lee down to her parent's house in Washington for New Year’s Eve he obliges but finds himself involved in the lives of all the women under that roof.

Fun Facts: The film is based on the true story of Chris Cherot's unrequited romance with Def Jam A&R executive Drew Dixon. The title comes from a Bible verse originating in the book of Philippians.

Philippians 4:12: I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

Timeline for the film according to Cherot (Orlando Sentinel, 1998):

1993: Begin his first movie, fall in love and get heartbroken, sink into rejection depression, stop making the movie

1994: Write a screenplay about the heartbreaking experience

1995: Film first movie

1996: Edit film

1997: Sell the movie and call it “Hav Plenty.”

What it is

An independent film that lucked up. According to the rich history of this film, Tracey Edmonds, wife of Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds viewed this film at the Acapulco Black Film Festival and bought it on the spot. She had recently seen box office success with another independent film: Soul Food. This was truly one of those “right place at the right time” sort of situations, y’all. The storyline reminds me very much of Love Jones and perhaps this film would have been more timeless without those comparisons.

What it isn’t

That good. Don’t get me wrong, the premise is promising, but the execution is lacking, to say the least. I’m sure the independent film budget factored into some of the decision-making. Hav Plenty had a budget of $65,000 in comparison to Love Jones $10 million budget. I do think it is a wonderful study in turning your pain into art. Something I believe Cherot succeeded in doing with Hav, however, I do think the film would have been better served with someone else playing Lee Plenty. Thereby giving way for more time to be spent by Cherot to finetune the details in production.

My opinion doesn’t matter much though. At the time of release, the film was met with praise and received a number of awards, including the Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film at Sundance and Best Screen at the Acapulco Black Film Festival.
