"liam saved theo from his never ending nightmare so theo saved liam from himself"
it’s no surprise to anyone, i’m a tiny bit obsessed with thiam.
when theo first arrived to the show i liked him already, i felt like he was an interesting character with an interesting backstory, i wanted to learn more. the more i did the worst it got but i kept thinking he was interesting and i liked seeing how he was able to plan his take on the pack. he managed to insert himself in the life of the characters and turned it around, when his plan failed, he still got his pack but ended up killing them all, i admit, kinda real bad, and then he got drag down to hell.
during the fifth season we found out that when he was ten he was manipulated into thinking his older sister – tara – wanted him to have her heart, because his had a genetic disorder. he believed the dread doctors when they told him they could make him better and he killed his own sister – taking her heart. he then left with them and was raised by them, raised believing that power was all that mattered and that he would be nothing and no one without it.
Tumblr media
in season six episode six liam and hayden decided to bring him back because they needed his help with a supernatural creature in town, while hayden was more resistant, liam did not hesitate to smash kira’s sword into the ground and free theo, saving him from his never ending nightmare at the same time.
very rapidly we understood that whatever power theo might have stolen from his chimera pack – more specifically josh – he wasn’t in possession of them anymore, he was back to "classic theo" part coyote and part wolf. after he helped with the ghost rider, liam and hayden locked theo in the holding cell at the sheriff station. theo wanted out and liam wanted answer, they made a deal and liam broke the sword and with it any chance of theo going back to hell, his never ending nightmare.
Tumblr media
when they needed him more, liam and stilinski broke theo out of jail but unfortunately the sheriff was taken and only theo and liam were left, leaving them no choice but to work together to flee the ghost riders. they – liam – had one goal, lure them away from scott, lydia and malia who were trying to get stiles back.
the both of them ended up at the hospital where, and i quote, liam said "when the ghost riders find us, i’m not gonna do anything for you, i’m not gonna help you, i’m not gonna save you, i’m gonna do exactly what you’d do to me, i’m gonna use you as bait". we all know he did not keep that promise, in fact, while fighting with a ghost rider, he pointed a gun at the one theo was fighting and shot, saving his life in the process. to "pay him back" and maybe prove that he wasn’t as bad as liam made him out to be, theo offered himself as bait.
Tumblr media
while we all thought he had been taken in the hunt, we found out he hadn’t when out of nowhere he came back and saved liam from one of the ghost riders at the school, leaving liam able to get on with his god awful – but working – plan to get into the hunt.
while theo later on fought at the side of scott, malia and peter, he was forgotten and left alone. obligated to live in his car.
we found that out on season six episode twelve, where i noticed that the deputies coming to wake him up seemed to always wear a different uniform, did theo move around? or is the beacon county just, that big?
he was shot and didn’t come back until three episodes later (not gonna lie, these were the three most stressful weeks of my life).
when in episode twelve we found out he was living in his car, we also found out that he might have been the first target for the anuk-ite. thankfully, theo caught the spider early and got rid of it before it took his body and with it, his life.
Tumblr media
when he came back in episode fifteen, he was hang up and tied to an electric fence in gerard and monroe’s headquarters. along with two other werewolves. when he thought he was free, he ended not being and was taken into custody.
during episode fifteen, when nolan was caught trying to sneak into the sheriff station liam automatically recognized him as the one who tried to make him shift in front of the whole school by beating him up. by scott’s reaction we understand that he might not have told him. but some of the shots during this scene were interesting, showing liam on the first plan with a close-shot accompanied by a blurry theo in the back. we understand why in the next scene that they share, in the bathroom.
theo confronts liam about what is happening, saying he will not risk his freedom. while liam first manages to stay calm during the discussion, he looses control when talking about brett and lori’s death. he punches theo before heading out and saying "i’m still working on my anger".
Tumblr media
while we don’t know what happens between episode fifteen and episode sixteen, we understand that something might have clicked in liam’s brain, because, while he reacted poorly, theo seemed to be the only one noticing that something was wrong with liam. could this be why he brought him with him at the zoo? maybe.
it could also be because theo seems to be able to handle liam. theo has a past and liam knows it, theo doesn’t shy away in front of danger and maybe this is what liam needs at the moment? someone who will not hesitate to get in the way to stop him from doing something stupid?
there is also a line in this episode where theo says "i’m not dying out here because you want pay back against a kid who kicked your ass" and while i have no recollection of anyone explaining to theo what happened in the prior episodes with nolan and liam, maybe someone did between episode fifteen and sixteen, liam perhaps?
the car conversation is also interesting because now theo knows how bad liam has it with his anger, and the fear the anuk-ite brings is not helping "people only feel one emotion at a time liam". he also knows liam needs help "you brought me here because that thing that came out of the wild hunt is affecting you too" at this moment theo has already made up his mind, whether liam wants his help or not, he is going to get it.
Tumblr media
and funny enough, liam doesn’t seem that resilient – oh he is yes – but not so much because deep down he knows he needs it, he also knows that whatever technique theo uses, it seems to be working because in episode seventeen, during the locker-room scene, liam calms down a bit too quickly for my liking (wrong i absolutely loved that).
theo uses reversed psychology and makes it to seem like liam would turn into a murderer, into someone like him "i’m the one with experience here", theo even uses "we" so that liam can feel more of a "bad person" because of what he might do. but in the end, it works and liam calms down.
now here is my favorite part, right after that liam asks theo "why do you keep trying to save me" and while theo answers something so dumb i don’t even want to mention it, i know it’s because liam saved him first and now theo feels obligated to return the favor (well, he does seem to enjoy it anyways).
Tumblr media
theo can be seen in the next episode, number eighteen, right at the beginning, in the animal clinic with scott, liam and mason.
mason agrees with theo and liam doesn’t seem to like it, everything he says to or about theo seems to come out as an insult, but why? they seemed to be getting along well in the prior episode? finishing each other sentences when showing the dead bodies gabe brought them to to scott and malia? maybe because he’s starting to realize he might need theo more than he thought? and he doesn’t want to acknowledge it?
either way, theo and mason are sent to the tunnels to find aaron. they are both clearly uncomfortable being with each other but theo even more because the tunnels are where everything started and he surely does not want to stay or be here at all.
mason ends up hurt, and theo decides to try and take his pain away. first of all, great decision, it shows that he is trying to change, that he at least knows he can do it at some point and wants to. unfortunately he isn’t able "you can’t take pain if you don’t care". theo still decides to stay with mason while waiting for help.
Tumblr media
the next time we see theo, it’s at the beginning of episode twenty, the finale. he is in his car, driving to somewhere on the phone with scott.
here are some details that don’t sit right with me. their phone call lasted twenty six seconds. there is no way theo answered the phone, got in his car, and drove to what seems to be the highway in twenty six seconds, so where was he going? was he leaving town because of what had happened with mason in the tunnels or liam’s sneaky comments at the clinic? because even after all his efforts, he is still not being accepted and knows he probably never will? probably. but i’m glad scott called and asked for his help.
he got to the hospital and saved liam’s ass – again might i add.
then, there is what is for me, their most important scene, for their relationship but also for their own character’s arc.
the elevator scene.
where they promise each other they weren’t gonna die for each other. where they lie their ass off.
i have a theory about this scene. remember the look? yes that one, the famous look down. based on my calculations, it is way too low to be directed to liam’s lips as people believe it to be, no, i think it’s directed to his chest, most importantly, his heart. because liam lied, and theo heard it. now of course theo lied too but he’s a professional he knows how to keep his heart steady.
and of course liam knows that theo knows because the look gives it away, which is why he accepts to fight with him (and damn, they make a pretty good team! i mean, that back roll? come on!) and i think in that moment they understood that no matter what, they can’t hide from this anymore, whatever this is (my money’s on anchor with a touch of love).
but in that moment i knew. i knew that because liam allowed himself to get help from theo, allowed himself to be anchored by theo, he anchored theo too. he gave him a reason and the opportunity to stay on the right path, on the path to redemption. and in that moment theo realized that he mattered, that he had a purpose.
Tumblr media
can we also quickly talk about the small shot of theo flinching at the sound of the gun going off? when has he ever done that? he was literally raised by the dread doctors, he’s not afraid of anything, but not knowing if liam was on the other end of that gun shot scared him.
now we all know that part of why theo was able to take gabe’s pain was because he saw himself in him, the kid who trusted the wrong people and suffered the consequences, just like he did. but part of why he was able to care was because liam cared. liam gave theo a reason to care.
Tumblr media
and this is why i love them so much. because their relationship, again, whatever it is, is special. it’s unlike any we’ve ever seen in the show. it’s important because it takes into consideration who they are on their own. it doesn’t exist just to add a relationship or a story-line to the show, it exists to fit on their own story-line, to make them better people.
as the title says, liam saved theo from his never ending nightmare so theo saved liam from himself (and fell in love with him in the process).
they are so important to me because i like when relationships have meaning, and theirs seems to be just that, meaningful.

A Very Hexley Birthday
A/N: Seeing all those beautiful edits on my dash for the birthday of my favourite twins in the Potterverse (I said what I said), I knew I couldn't possibly do any better. So instead, let's have a look what Ethel and Jim are up to on their birthday, shall we?
This is for you, Bestie! @the-al-chemist
Happy Birthday, Jim and Ethel! 💛️
Naturally, Ethel and Jim Hexley and Héloïse Perrault belong to my favourite person in this world @the-al-chemist. The attending guests belong to @slytherindisaster (Lysander Mercury), @kc-and-oc (Siobhan Llewellyn, Bradford Pendleton, Oliver and Eliot Gerard, Ivy Anders), @hogwartsmysteryho (Vinny Raymond), @that-scouse-wizard (Cledwyn Ironwood), @cursebreakerfarrier (Galen Stagg), and @unfortunate-arrow (Anthony Rosen).
Tumblr media
Even though the golden arrows of the September sun were showing themselves on the enchanted ceiling in the Great Hall of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Jeremiah Hexley was in a rather glum mood when he reached for the huge bowl of porridge at the Hufflepuff House table.
It was just out of his reach and his fingertips only grazed the rim; he simply would have needed to stand up to get it, but that would only draw attention to the tall, lankish boy, which was something he generally tried to avoid, but especially so today. So Jim sat straight again and reached for a slice of toast instead.
“I wish you the finest of mornings,” he heard a voice call out to him, “isn’t it a wonderful day outside? You should have seen the colours of the sunrise; no one can paint anything as beautiful as that.”
The voice belonged to Lysander Mercury, another Hufflepuff boy from his year, and undoubtedly Jim’s best friend. He had a spring in his step as he walked up to Jim, and his thumbs were hooked under the straps of his suspenders; he hadn’t bothered putting the black jumper of their school uniform over them yet.
He sat down opposite Jim with a graceful motion, grabbing the porridge bowl in the same instance and pushing it over to Jim. Giving Lysander a grateful look, Jim helped himself to a healthy portion and drizzled a teaspoon full of dark golden honey on top, just the way he liked it. But even the prospect of his favourite breakfast wasn’t enough to lighten Jim’s mood, and it wasn’t lost on Lysander.
“Why such a long face, old fellow?” he grinned, and his stress on the word ‘old’ wasn’t lost on Jim, quite the contrary. “It’s not a day to be brooding!”
Jim opened his mouth to explain himself, but was interrupted by the sound of quick footsteps approaching from behind him; a moment later two pairs of arms were flung around his neck and Jim almost knocked over his bowl of porridge in his attempt to not be thrown off the bench.
“Happy Birthday, Jim!” two girls shouted into his ears in perfect unison, of course they did. The sound of their excitement cut through Jim’s eardrums and he winced as he pushed them away.
“Uhm, thank you,” he muttered, “Happy Birthday to you as well,” he said in the direction of the smaller of the two.
Ethel Hexley, his twin sister and complete opposite and in every aspect imaginable, grinned and clapped Jim on his back so hard he almost lurched forward. “Thanks, kiddo. One more year of making sure my little brother has at least some fun in his life.”
“Like a proper big sister should,” her best friend Selene Fraser added with a knowing nod. Not even the Sorting Hat had been able to separate these two, and sometimes Jim wondered who out of them three actually were the twin siblings.
“But, er, you know Effy’s only older by a few minutes... so she isn’t really my big sister, if you want to put it that way…”
Jim trailed off when he saw something whisk past him into the direction of the porridge bowl. Before he had the chance to dive straight into it though, Lysander had already gotten hold of the brown and white ferret Ethel and Selene shared custody of; Alan’s nose twitched as Lysander held him out to Ethel.
“Take your ferret back, Hexley,” he said, “I’d say you two are looking like the actual twins here, but seeing as it’s unfortunately your birthday as well, I’ll let it pass. Consider this my present.”
“Seeing as Alan definitely is the best looking guy I’ve spoken to today, I’ll take that as a compliment, Mercury,” Ethel immediately shot back, with that unmistakable glint in her eyes that Jim knew promised nothing but bother, very wordy bother.
Lysander had already leaned slightly forward as well, his eyes fixed on Jim’s twin sister, ready for their morning round of bickering and Jim sighed.
“Could you two, uhm… maybe, just maybe… perhaps stop it? Just for today?”
“Leave him, Effy, he’s not worth it. Not a match for you anyway,” Selene muttered to her best friend; Jim gave her a grateful look.
“True, Sels, I won’t have my birthday spoiled by a wanna-be artist in suspenders,” Ethel said indignantly, and Lysander opened his mouth in protest. Selene elbowed Ethel into the side, before setting Alan onto her shoulder and linking arms with her, quickly pulling her away before things would escalate. Again.
Selene turned around after a few steps and called over her shoulder. “Come to the Quidditch pitch after classes, Jim, will you? We have a little surprise for you!”
*
Throughout the whole day, Jim wasn’t sure what made him more uncomfortable: all the attention he got because it was his birthday, or the prospect of a surprise set up for him by Ethel and Selene. The sheer idea of everything these two could have been planning was enough to upset Jim’s stomach and he couldn’t even enjoy his favourite roast beef for lunch.
When their last class of the day was over, Jim reluctantly made his may over to the Quidditch pitch, as he had been told to. He had wanted to ask Lysander to come, but then again, bringing Ethel and Lysander into the same space was too much for him today; or any day, to be precise.
As soon as he stepped through the opening in the wooden perimeter of the pitch, he raised his eyebrows in surprise. Ethel and Selene had laid out several red and white chequered picnic blankets in the middle of the immaculate green lawn, just like the ones their parents had at home. He could see baskets full of sandwiches, little cakes, fruit and cheese on every single one of them, alongside countless jugs of pumpkin juice.
Naturally, Ethel and Selene were standing in the midst of the people already gathered there, laughing and joking and having a wonderful time, and Jim’s heart sank a little. He saw many familiar faces; he saw Siobhan Llewellyn and her best friend Galen Stagg, who were feeding slices of roast beef to a very content looking Alan; he saw Oliver Gerard who was laughing with Ethel about a lively story she was telling; he had brought his brother, Eliot, a Ravenclaw boy Jim didn’t really know, and who was looking very comfortable talking to Selene, who was standing next to Ivy Anders and Vinny Raymond were sharing some cake; he could even spy the eternally grumpy Cledwyn Ironwood, who never got tired of proclaiming he wasn’t Ethel’s friend but, just like Jim, had obviously stood no chance in declining the invitation.
All of these people were there, but all of them were Ethel’s friends, not his. Jim sighed; he knew Ethel and Selene had meant well, but they just didn’t understand him, they never really did.
“I ‘ope we aren’t late, non?”
Upon hearing the familiar French accent, Jim’s heart skipped a beat before beating doubly as fast as before. He turned around and his eyes went wide when he saw the group of people who had quietly come up behind him.
“Bon anniversaire, Jim!” Héloïse swept in and quickly kissed him on both cheeks in close succession, before pushing an immaculately wrapped gift into his hands, the edges of the paper sharp and the bow perfectly tied. Jim tried to thank her but his words came out as a horrible stutter and he felt the heat rise to his face; it felt particularly warm where Héloïse had kissed him.
Next up came his dear friend Bradford, who shared his enthusiasm for painting; he extended his hand to Jim to wish him a happy birthday as well, and the gift he was handing over to him felt suspiciously like the elaborate sketchbook Jim had seen on his last trip to Hogsmeade.
His roommate Anthony was there, too, as always accompanied by his wolfhound Conall. Jim bent down to pet the animal and scratch his ears. He had to smile when he saw how enthusiastic Conall was at the prospect of all the attention; at least one of them was, then.
Even Lysander had been invited, or had in any case decided to show up; you never knew with Ethel and him. But whether he had actually been asked to be here or not, Jim was glad to see him.
By Brady’s side, more quiet than the rest, stood Brady’s friend - or at least that’s what they claimed to be - Carolyn Nyberg. Jim was surprised to see her here; he and Carolyn didn’t really have anything in common but Brady, but then again, they were seldomly seen without each other these days. She inclined her head and quietly congratulated him.
The question as to why Carolyn had come, though, was quickly answered when Ethel spotted the new arrivals and bounded over to them. “It’s so good you came! I’m so happy all of you could make it to our birthday picnic. Most of you, that is,” she said with a pointed look in Lysander’s direction, but before he could shoot back, her attention had already shifted to Carolyn.
“Did you manage to make what we talked about?”
Jim could see Carolyn was trying hard not to roll her eyes. “Please, who do you take me for? That was a child’s play.”
Brady gave her a pointed look. “Be nice, Caro, it’s their birthday.”
She sighed, but her face softened and she reached into the hidden pocket in her dress, producing a small, stoppered vial with purple liquid inside. She weighed it in her hands, looking at the mugs of pumpkin juice on the picnic blankets. “I’d say six drops per mug should be sufficient.” She moved the vial out of Ethel’s reach when she extended her hand towards it. “Not one drop more, you hear me?”
“Loud and clear.”
Jim’s apprehension about Ethel putting a potion into their drinks soon vanished when he saw what it was that Carolyn had brewed on his sister’s request. After drinking from the modified juice, everyone of their guests had a distinct spring to their step that made them jump a little every time they moved. He remembered how much fun Ethel and Selene had had when they had turned the floor of the courtyard elastic with the Spongify charm; it had gotten them three weeks worth of detention and a passion for jumping as high as they possibly could.
Not being particularly keen on moving around like a bouncing ball, Jim had only taken the tiniest sip of pumpkin juice when Ethel had offered it to him; it was enough to give his step a tolerable spring, but not enough to make him bounce like the others, and that was just the way Jim preferred it to be.
Jim usually didn’t feel comfortable among so many people, but he had to give Ethel that, even he was enjoying himself. He watched Héloïse and Selene sharing excited whispers about the latest story of the Muggle detective they were so keen about, while Brady was bickering with Siobhan over one thing or the other, and Lysander was busy trying to place Alan on top of Carolyn’s head, who told him very sternly to stop it if he didn’t want a swig of Veritaserum served with his next meal.
Happy that his and Ethel’s friends seemed to be having a good time, Jim sat down on one of the blankets, partly because he wanted to eat something, and partly because he needed a step back from the hustle and bustle.
It wasn’t long, however, before Ethel spotted him. She walked over to him, jumping into the air with each step, and slumped down onto the blanket beside him.
“Aren’t you enjoying yourself?” she wanted to know. For a very brief moment, concern flickered over her freckled face. “Because I did my very best to make this fun for both of us. Look, I even invited that horrible friend of yours,” she said and pulled a face in Lysander’s direction; he stuck his tongue out at her in response before turning away.
“No, uhm, I just needed a short break,” Jim answered and set down his plate. “You, er… you did a great job, Effy, you know? I’m having fun, I think… It’s a lovely birthday party, really… so thank you. I, uhm, I didn’t expect this, to be honest.”
“But why?” Ethel asked; she looked truly baffled at his words.
“We’re just so… uhm, how do I say it… we’re just so different, you and I. I’m quiet and, er, shy, I guess and you’re so… loud and popular and we’re just not much alike.”
Ethel dipped her head back and laughed loudly. “I’m not popular, Jim,” she sniggered, “I just don’t leave people alone. Tell them you’re friends often enough and they end up believing it,” she grinned and waved to Cledwyn, who rolled his eyes and looked away. “There’s nothing more to it than that. I bet you could do it, too.”
But Jim shook his head. “I’m not really so sure of that... I think.”
Ethel nudged him into the side with her shoulder. “Give yourself more credit. You’re my twin brother after all, that has to account for something. If this is any help, we may be polar opposites, but you’re still my favourite person in this world.”
“Uhm, what about Selene?”
Ethel pursed her lips. “Okay, maybe it’s a tie.”
Jim had to smile at that. Remembering something, he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out a piece of parchment, tied to a scroll with a crimson piece of ribbon.
“Happy Birthday, Effy,” he said, for once without a stutter.
Ethel’s eyes went wide when she saw the picture Jim had drawn for her. It showed the two of them, laughing with each other. Ethel, despite being smaller than Jim, had his head in a headlock and was ruffling his hair while he was trying to escape, but he was laughing just as much as she was. The drawn versions of themselves were moving over the parchment in fluent motions. Jim had asked for Héloïse’s help with enchanting it; with his French still being awful, it had been one of the most awkward and complicated conversations in his entire life.
“It’s beautiful, Jim, thank you,” she said and flung her arms around his neck. When she let go, she looked a little sheepish. “Now I feel stupid for what I got you, although I’m pretty sure you can need it.”
With a wink, she produced her own gift. Jim could see she had wrapped it in her typical Ethel-style, with way too much wrapping paper and loads of colourful ribbons; one of them looking suspiciously like the hair tie their grandmother had gotten Ethel for Christmas. He blushed deeply when he read the cover of the small red book the parcel contained:
101 Foolproof Ways to a French Witch’s Heart - A Guide for Modern Gentlemen
“Effy… that… um… you… why…” Jim stuttered, his face a deeper shade of red than the Gryffindor banners hanging from the wooden tower behind Ethel.
His twin sister only sniggered. “Read it and thank me later.”
She got to her feet and pulled Jim along, motioning to the entrance of the pitch, where Selene was in the process of levitating a giant birthday cake onto the field. It had enchanted lion and badger figurines on top; the lion was throwing tiny pieces of cake after the badger, who caught it with its mouth.
“Come on now, dear brother,” she said as she linked arms with him and half marched, half dragged him across the lawn towards their friends. “We have a cake to cut.”

Drowning In You

Stiles often found it amusing that despite the horrors they had witnessed in previous years, here was Derek Hale, living in the renovated Hale house. The house itself looked as though it belonged in a home&garden magazine. After years of self-flagellating, years of living in abandoned warehouses and other unsuitable spaces, the wolf now had it all.
Derek now owned a large picturesque home, ready to be filled to the brim with the pack, miles of thick forest surrounded the house, bright sunlight filtered through the vibrant green leaves of tall trees streaking patterns of light across the dirt floor. It was serene.
Stiles sat on the porch; his hand wet from condensation as he nursed a cold beer, he had kicked off his converse hours ago, leaving them in a messy heap by the railing, his loose t-shirt swayed in the gentle breeze as he pondered over how their lives had led them to this moment.
Perfectly shaped clouds littered the sky, providing breaks of shade from the suns heat. It was perfect, really. Stiles sucks in a deep lungful of clean, forest air, warmth blooming in his chest as he realises how much of a home this place has become to him. Home used to be a small house shared with the Sheriff, but now his home was here with Derek and the pack.
He feels the heat of Dereks eyes boring into the side of his head, "Dude, I know you were raised by wolves, but to humans, it's classed as rude to stare." Stiles huffs, but his voice holds no bite as he turns away from the idyllic scenery, rolling his eyes as he spots the amused smirk on Derek's face.
"Don't call me dude" Derek glares at Stiles; It's been years since his glares held any heat when directed at Stiles. Derek had been admiring Stiles since they sat down, eyes drawn to the younger man's relaxed face as he drank in the peaceful scenery.
They settled into an easy silence, comfortable beside each other as they watch the sky change from a striking blue to a gentle pink as nightfall creeps closer. Stiles is known for being restless when silence and stillness fall, as expected it's not long before the younger man is fidgeting in his seat, punctuating his movements with drawn-out huffs and sighs, making his struggle known to the wolf. With a long pull of his beer, Stiles turns to Derek, the expression on his face instantly alerting Derek to the fact he wasn't going to like whatever the boy wanted to say.
"Derek" Stiles whispers, his forehead is pinched into a worried frown, his brown Bambi eyes peering up at Derek from beneath his lashes. Derek tears his gaze from Stiles, throwing his head back against the chair. He knew he wasn't going to like this. "We need to talk about Kate."
Stiles had been attempting to force Derek to talk about this particular subject since the woman had reemerged in Beacon Hills, they had been tracking her, alongside their team for months. They were part of an organisation that protected supernatural creatures from deranged hunters; Kate had reappeared in Beacon Hills with a trail of bodies behind her. The organisation they worked for were unaware of Derek's personal connection to Kate, Stiles, unfortunately, was more aware of their past relationship then he'd like.
"Let's not do this Stiles," Derek grunts out turning to where Stiles is sat beside him, "not tonight" he mutters quietly, his words almost drowned out by the chirping of birds perched in a tree nearby.
"This isn't healthy Derek" Stiles exclaims throwing his arms up in exasperation, his eyes burning with a rage Derek knows isn't aimed at him. Goosebumps raise over his skin as Stiles' eyes flash violet, his anger allowing for a brief lapse in his usual iron-clad control. Stiles is watching him carefully, his shoulders tense and his body no longer slumped against the chair. Instead, he sits upright his eyes locked with Dereks as his waits on the wolf to respond. Stiles stares up at him his warm whiskey brown eyes soft and patient, the sight alone enough to make Derek want to give him the world.
"Stiles, please" Derek pleads, Stiles rolls his eyes with an annoyed huff, but Derek takes it to mean the younger man is relenting. The, for now, goes unsaid; he wanted to tell Stiles, of course, he did, he just wasn't ready to have that conversation yet. Derek reaches into the cooler beside them, pulling out to fresh beers and wordlessly handing one over to Stiles, a metaphorical olive branch that has the boy biting back a soft smile.
Stiles settles back into the chair allowing the tense conversation to lapse as he closes his eyes, letting the gentle summer breeze wash over him, his pale skin bathed in a golden glow from the setting sun. Beside him, he hears Derek's chair creaking as Derek shifts his weight. Stiles' heavy lids flutter open, tired eyes watching as the man repositions himself, his eyes trace over the wolfs unguarded expression as he wonders not for the first time how they ended up here. Together. When he feels Derek's eyes focus on him, and the man's expressive brows furrowing in confusion, he realises he's staring.
The realisation settles on him heavily, constricting his throat as he tries to swallow, a flush rising high on his cheeks, the werewolf could no doubt hear his heart hammering beath his ribcage. The shrill ringing of Derek's phone breaks them from the trance they'd been lost in, cursing, Derek pulls it from where it's hidden in his pocket. Stiles sighs, taking one last swig of his beer, he stands up and stretches out his relaxed muscles, behind him, he sighs mournfully as he hears Derek informing the caller they were leaving.
As soon as Derek slips the phone back into his pocket, Stiles rounds on him with an annoyed huff; he leans down to push a finger against his muscular chest. "Damnit Derek, it's a Saturday" the whiny tone to Stiles' voice causes Derek to let out a low chuckle at the man's childish antics.
"Get ready Stiles," Derek reaches over to Stiles' deserted chair, and balls up the flannel shirt draped over the arm, Stiles squeaks indignantly as the balled up materiel is propelled at his face, Dereks deep laugh filling his ears. ~~~~~~~~
Once they enter the packhouse, they go their separate ways to change into more professional attire before reuniting outside the heavy oak doors that lead into the pack briefing room. Inside the room, Peter is sprawled comfortably across one of the plush armchairs, whereas Lydia stands impatiently with her arms crossed and hip resting against the large solid table in the room's centre.
"Finally" Lydia snaps an air of polite impatience radiating from her, it's been years since Stiles believed he was in love with her; however he still takes a moment to admire the confidence she exudes.
As they all crowd around the briefing table, Lydia gestures towards the files strewn across the table, inviting the other unit members to familiarise themselves with the case. Their specialised supernatural unit is being assigned to the protection of a  young werewolf named Daniel Garcia; the man is a few years younger then Stiles, who is now twenty-three.
In the file there is a picture of the young wolf, he looks shockingly similar to Scott with his scraggly brown hair and boyish smile, he looked young and innocent, and Stiles can't help but feel bad for the young man. Unconsciously he looks to Derek, who had still been baby faced in his photo when his family had been murdered. Stiles feels his chest constrict, his breathing becoming ragged as he loses himself in the hardships Derek has been forced to struggle through. One of Derek's large hands wraps around his wrist, the touch grounding him, pulling him back from the edge of a panic attack, Stiles flashes Derek a grateful smile, his lips shaking slightly as they twitch up.
Daniel is a key witness who is due to appear in court and testify against Gerard Argent. The infamous hunter is on trial for setting ablaze to dozens of homes, trapping the supernatural families inside. Daniel isn't the first witness to emerge ready to testify against the heinous man; however, unsurprisingly all the other witness have wound up dead, this time the stakes are higher, without Daniels testimony Gerard will be released from prison. Stiles shares a brief look with Derek, the man obviously as disturbed by the thought of Gerard Argent going free as he is.
"Well, we can't let that happen" Stiles interjects stating the obvious, his intelligent eyes still scanning over the various pages of information.
"Thank you for stating the obvious little spark" Peter snarks, Stiles briefly flicks his eyes up, catching the hint of a smirk playing on Peter's lips. Beside him, Derek forces his face into an unimpressed scowl; Stiles has spent years interpreting Dereks facial expressions and hidden deep in his technicolour eyes the younger man catches a glimpse of the Alphas amusement.
"Shut up Zombie-Wolf" Stiles shuts the file, smirking to himself as he watches the two wolves wince at the unexpectedly loud snap ringing out through the otherwise silent room. He flashes Derek a bright smile, the man fixing him with a subtle shake of his head and an annoyed eye roll, as he slides the file across the table to Peter.
"His location has been compromised; we are releasing him from the Sheriffs departments custody and taking him into ours," Lydia informs them Stiles looks to Derek, briefly remembering the emotionally stunted man he'd been when they'd first met, Stiles wasn't a religious man. Yet, he found himself praying this case wouldn't reopen any closed wounds for the wolf.
"Okay, no one is to disclose any information pertinent to the case with any member of the Sheriff's department" Derek turns to look at Stiles his eyes softening slightly before he speaks again "Sorry Stiles but that includes the Sheriff." Stiles pinches the bridge of his nose to fight the oncoming headache this case was already causing him. Barely an hour ago he was enjoying a relaxing Sunday, and now here he was dealing with this shit storm of a case. ~~~~~~
Stiles and Derek arrive at the Sheriff's department where Garcia is waiting for them in the Sheriff's office, Peter, Lydia and the Sheriff roll their eyes as the two walk into the room bickering over Dereks driving. A common argument between the two men.
Amongst the Sheriff and their pack members is an unfamiliar woman who appeared to be readying herself to leave as they arrived. She had tanned blemish-free skin; her legs were long and sleek, a tight pair of jeans wrapped around them, as she reaches out to shake Derek's hand Stiles spots a glimpse of a silver wolf pendant hanging from her neck, he files the information away to deal with later as he greets the stranger. "Hi, I'm Allison, I'm the lead prosecutor for this case, I was actually just on my way out but, it was nice to meet you"  her voice is sickly sweet as she speaks, flashing Stiles a dimpled smile, her eyes slowly trailing over his lithe frame, in a way that makes him want to take a scalding shower.
She reaches out, giving Stiles' hand another tight squeeze before sweeping out of the room, as the door slams shut, Derek bumps his shoulder, his face twisted into an irritated scowl. "Focus Stiles" the Alpha growls.
"I am focused!" Stiles exclaims indignantly, his own face twisting into a disgusted grimace, trust Derek to be the only person in town oblivious to the fact he's gay. The Sheriff clears his throat shooting a pointed look in the direction of the uncomfortable sofa across the room, lying on the couch is Daniel Garcia, Stiles schools his expression as he remembers why they're here. The man in question has deep purple bags under his eyes, and his complexion is ghostly, Stiles doubts the man could even stand up in his exhausted state. There are no protests from the deputies nor the witness as their team bundles the man into the backseat of Dereks Camaro. Derek relays the coordinates to the safe house to Peter and Lydia, leaving the two in charge of gathering supplies as they leave for the safe house with Daniel.

Yo, I’m soft today. Arranged marriage or kid fic for Dallison?
Bold of you to assume that I’ll choose one.
Tumblr media
1. The Hales and the Argents are rivaling families in business, have been for quite a while, to the point where the media calls it a family feud. Gerard Argent, the CEO of Argent & CO, tasks his younger daughter to find a way inside the Hale’s circle to spy on them. She targets Derek, the second son of CEO Talia Hale. It goes better than expected, and though they keep the relationship a secret, she coaxes valuable information out of him. It would have been great for the Argents, if Kate didn’t sabotage Laura’s car brakes, causing a fatal accident. After that, Kate is caught, and in her confessions she drags Gerard down with her, leaving her older brother in charge of the company. It only gets worse, when they discover Kate is pregnant.
2. It’s a mediatic circus for both families, and the PR crisis puts the reputation of their companies at risk. Because of this, Chris holds a meeting with Talia so they can put an end to their feud. There’s a lot of pain and mistrust in the middle, and Talia questions how can he ensure that future generations will hold his end of the deal. Here comes Allison’s intervention. She doesn’t really like the Hales either, and she surely doesn’t have reasons to like Derek, but she knows what damage her family has caused them, and this conflict has already taken an innocent life, so it’s time to put it to rest. She agrees to a marriage with Derek, if he’ll have her, and that way they would prevent any future rupture on their deal.
3. Derek objects to the marriage as soon as his mother tells him. An Argent woman is the last thing he wants in his life, not now and not ever, and while Talia is understanding of his pain, she insists on it, tells him to do it for Laura, if not for them. He hates the low blow, but she knows him all to well, so he ends up agreeing. His only condition is to have full custody of his daughter, once she’s born. They get married, and they make a big show out of it. Pictures of their wedding are all over the internet and it’s the only thing people talk about for a while, but neither of them is really happy, and Derek wonders how anyone can see anyting but pain and misery in his eyes.
4. They make it work, somehow. They sleep in separate rooms and have heated fights, they go hard at each other, not holding back their resentment, pain and confusion at all of this. They settle on a routine, divide the house chores, and share an office at home where they both work in silence. Slowly, they make compromises, they eat together and make an effort at talking and getting to know each other. They share opinions on each other’s jobs, help each other get a different perspective, and it’s surprising the first time they genuinely laugh in each other’s company. But when they’re starting to get comfortable in their new routine, Derek gets a call, telling him that his baby is coming, and he panics. That night, Allison stays at his side, and doesn’t let go of his hand.
5. She suggests calling the baby Laura, and Derek chokes back something akin to a pained whine, shakes his head and tells her that he wants her to have her own name. He’ll always love and remember his sister, but won’t project his loss onto his daughter. They call her Nadia, and it means hope. She has dark hair, big blue eyes and dimples. Kate is declared incapable of safely raising the child and Chris doesn’t protest against it when Derek is given full custody. They adapt their routines and schedules around Nadia’s existence, and it’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Her first word is “dada”, and Derek almost cries with it, but her second is “mama” and it’s directed at Allison. Derek calls Nadia their child, and that’s what she is, after all. A year later, the pictures that go online on their second anniversary have them both smiling with genuine happiness.

PLAY==> http://ver.yess-movie.com/movie/tt9162090/c-est-la-vie.html
Its somewhat ironic that a movie about time travel can’t be reviewed properly until your future self rewatches the movie. It’s bold of Nolan to make such a thoroughly dense blockbuster. He assumes people will actually want to see C’est la vie more than once so they can understand it properly, which some may not. This movie makes the chronology of Inception look as simplistic as tic-tac-toe. Ergo, it’s hard for me to give an accurate rating, without having seen it twice, as I’m still trying to figure out whether everything does indeed make sense. If it does, this movie is easily a 9 or 10. If it doesn’t, it’s a 6. It’s further not helped by the fact that the dialogue in the first 15 minutes of the movie is painfully hard to understand / hear. Either they were behind masks; they were practically mumbling; the sound effects were too loud; or all of the above. The exposition scenes are also waayyy too brief for something this complex — a problem also shared with Interstellar actually. (Interstellar had this minimalist exposition problem explaining Blight, where if you weren’t careful, you’d miss this one sentence / scene in the entire movie explaining that Blight was a viral bacteria: “Earth’s atmosphere is 80% nitrogen, we don’t even breathe nitrogen. Blight does, and as it thrives, our air gets less and less oxygen”). I guess it’s a Nolan quirk. Hopefully, a revision of the film audio sorts the sound mixing out. I do like the soundtrack, but it’s too loud initially. I liked all the actors. You think John Washington can’t act at first, but he can, and he grows on you as the film progresses. And Pattinson is his usual charming self. Elizabeth is a surprise treat. And so on. Its worth a watch either way. See it with subtitles if you can. And definitely don’t expect to fully understand whats going on the first time around. Its one hell of a complicated film. It will be very hard for an average viewer to gather all the information provided by this movie at the first watch. But the more you watch it, more hidden elements will come to light. And when you are able to put these hidden elements together. You will realize that this movie is just a “masterpiece” which takes the legacy of Christopher Nolan Forward If I talk about acting, Then I have to say that Robert Pattinson has really proved himself as a very good actor in these recent years. And I am sure his acting skills will increase with time. His performance is charming and very smooth. Whenever he is on the camera, he steals the focus John David Washington is also fantastic in this movie. His performance is electrifying, I hope to see more from him in the future. Other characters such as Kenneth Branagh, Elizabeth, Himesh Patel, Dimple Kapadia, Clémence Poésy have also done quite well. And I dont think there is a need to talk about Michael Caine Talking about Music, its awesome. I dont think you will miss Hans Zimmer’s score. Ludwig has done a sufficient job. There is no lack of good score in the movie Gotta love the editing and post production which has been put into this movie. I think its fair to say this Nolan film has focused more in its post production. The main problem in the movie is the sound mixing. Plot is already complex and some dialogues are very soft due to the high music score. It makes it harder to realize what is going on in the movie. Other Nolan movies had loud BGM too. But Audio and dialogues weren’t a problem My humble request to everyone is to please let the movie sink in your thoughts. Let your mind grasp all the elements of this movie. I am sure more people will find it better. Even those who think they got the plot. I can bet they are wrong. C’est la vie is the long awaited new movie from Christopher Nolan. The movie that’s set to reboot the multiplexes post-Covid. It’s a manic, extremely loud, extremely baffling sci-fi cum spy rollercoaster that will please a lot of Nolan fan-boys but which left me with very mixed views. John David Washington (Denzel’s lad) plays “The Protagonist” — a crack-CIA field operative who is an unstoppable one-man army in the style of Hobbs or Shaw. Recruited into an even more shadowy organisation, he’s on the trail of an international arms dealer, Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh in full villain mode). Sator is bullying his estranged wife Kat (Elizabeth Debicki) over custody of their son (and the film unusually has a BBFC warning about “Domestic Abuse”). Our hero jets the world to try to prevent a very particular kind of Armageddon while also keeping the vulnerable and attractive Kat alive. This is cinema at its biggest and boldest. Nolan has taken a cinema ‘splurge’ gun, filled it with money, set it on rapid fire, removed the safety and let rip at the screen. Given that Nolan is famous for doing all of his ‘effects’ for real and ‘in camera’, some of what you see performed is almost unbelievable. You thought crashing a train through rush-hour traffic in “Inception” was crazy? You ain’t seen nothing yet with the airport scene! And for lovers of Chinooks (I must admit I am one and rush out of the house to see one if I hear it coming!) there is positively Chinook-p*rn on offer in the film’s ridiculously huge finale. The ‘inversion’ aspects of the story also lends itself to some fight scenes — one in particular in an airport ‘freeport’ — which are both bizarre to watch and, I imagine, technically extremely challenging to pull off. In this regard John David Washington is an acrobatic and talented stunt performer in his own right, and must have trained for months for this role. Nolan’s crew also certainly racked up their air miles pre-lockdown, since the locations range far and wide across the world. The locations encompassed Denmark, Estonia, India, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom, and United States. Hoyte Van Hoytema’s cinematography is lush in introducing these, especially the beautiful Italian coast scenes. Although I did miss the David Arnold strings that would typically introduce these in a Bond movie: it felt like that was missing. The ‘timey-wimey’ aspects of the plot are also intriguing and very cleverly done. There are numerous points at which you think “Oh, that’s a sloppy continuity error” or “Shame the production design team missed that cracked wing mirror”. Then later in the movie, you get at least a dozen “Aha!” moments. Some of them (no spoilers) are jaw-droppingly spectacular. Perhaps the best twist is hidden in the final line of the movie. I only processed it on the way home. And so to the first of my significant gripes with C’est la vie. The sound mix in the movie is all over the place. I’d go stronger than that… it’s truly awful (expletive deleted)! Nolan often implements Shakespeare’s trick of having characters in the play provide exposition of the plot to aid comprehension. But unfortunately, all of this exposition dialogue was largely incomprehensible. This was due to: the ear-splitting volume of the sound: 2020 movie audiences are going to be suffering from ‘C’est la vieis’! (LOL); the dialogue is poorly mixed with the thumping music by Ludwig Göransson (Wot? No Hans Zimmer?); a large proportion of the dialogue was through masks of varying description (#covid-appropriate). Aaron Taylor-Johnson was particularly unintelligible to my ears. Overall, watching this with subtitles at a special showing might be advisable! OK, so I only have a PhD in Physics… but at times I was completely lost as to the intricacies of the plot. It made “Inception” look like “The Tiger Who Came to Tea”. There was an obvious ‘McGuffin’ in “Inception” — — (“These ‘dream levels’… how exactly are they architected??”…. “Don’t worry… they’ll never notice”. And we didn’t!) In “C’est la vie” there are McGuffins nested in McGuffins. So much of this is casually waved C’est la vie as “future stuff… you’re not qualified” that it feels vaguely condescending to the audience. At one point Sator says to Kat “You don’t know what’s going on, do you?” and she shakes her head blankly. We’re right with you there luv! There are also gaps in the storyline that jar. The word “C’est la vie”? What does it mean. Is it just a password? I’m none the wiser. The manic pace of C’est la vie and the constant din means that the movie gallops along like a series of disconnected (albeit brilliant) action set pieces. For me, it has none of the emotional heart of the Cobb’s marriage problems from “Inception” or the father/daughter separation of “Interstellar”. In fact, you barely care for anyone in the movie, perhaps with the exception of Kat. It’s a talented cast. As mentioned above, John David Washington is muscular and athletic in the role. It’s a big load for the actor to carry in such a tent-pole movie, given his only significant starring role before was in the excellent BlacKkKlansman. But he carries it off well. A worthy successor to Gerard Butler and Jason Statham for action roles in the next 10 years. This is also a great performance by Robert Pattinson, in his most high-profile film in a long time, playing the vaguely alcoholic and Carré-esque support guy. Pattinson’s Potter co-star Clemence Poésy also pops up — rather more un-glam that usual — as the scientist plot-expositor early in the movie. Nolan’s regular Michael Caine also pops up. although the 87-year old legend is starting to show his age: His speech was obviously affected at the time of filming (though nice try Mr Nolan in trying to disguise that with a mouth full of food!). But in my book, any amount of Caine in a movie is a plus. He also gets to deliver the best killer line in the film about snobbery! However, it’s Kenneth Branagh and Elizabeth Debicki that really stand out. They were both fabulous, especially when they were bouncing off each other in their marital battle royale. So, given this was my most anticipated movie of the year, it’s a bit of a curate’s egg for me. A mixture of being awe-struck at times and slightly disappointed at others. It’s a movie which needs a second watch, so I’m heading back today to give my ear drums another bashing! And this is one where I reserve the right to revisit my rating after that second watch… it’s not likely to go down… but it might go up. (For the full graphical review, check out One Mann’s Movies on t’interweb and Facebook. Thanks.) As this will be non-spoiler, I can’t say too much about the story. However, what I can is this: C’est la vie’s story is quite dynamic in the sense that you won’t understand it till it wants you to. So, for the first half, your brain is fighting for hints and pieces to puzzle together the story. It isn’t until halfway through the movie that C’est la vie invites you to the fantastic storytelling by Christopher Nolan. Acting is beyond phenomenal, and I’d be genuinely surprised if neither Robert Pattinson nor John David Washington doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination for best actor. It’s also hard not to mention how good Elizabeth Debicki and Aaron Johnson both are. All around, great acting, and the dialogue amps up the quality of the movie. The idea of this movie is damn fascinating, and while there are films that explore time-travelling, there’s never been anything quite like this. It has such a beautiful charm and for the most part, explains everything thoroughly. It feels so much more complex than any form of time-travelling we’ve seen, and no less could’ve been expected from Nolan. Oh my lord, the score for this film fits so perfectly. Every scene that’s meant to feel intense was amped by a hundred because of how good the score was. Let me just say though, none of them will be found iconic, but they fit the story and scenes so well. In the end, I walked out, feeling very satisfied. Nevertheless, I do have issues with the film that I cannot really express without spoiling bits of the story. There are definitely little inconsistencies that I found myself uncovering as the story progressed. However, I only had one issue that I found impacted my enjoyment. That issue was understanding some of the dialogue. No, not in the sense that the movie is too complicated, but more that it was hard to make out was being said at times. It felt like the movie required subtitles, but that probably was because, at a time in the film, there was far too much exposition. Nevertheless, I loved this film, I’ll be watching it at least two more times, and I think most of you in this group will enjoy it. I definitely suggest watching it in theatres if possible, just so you can get that excitement. (4/5) & (8.5/10) for those that care about number scores. At first, I want to ask Christopher Nolan one question, HOW THE HELL YOU DID THIS? Seriously I want to have an answer, How did he write such as this masterpiece! How did he get this complicated, fabulous and creative idea? What is going on in his mind? The story is written and directed perfectly, the narration style was absolutely unique. I have no idea how can anyone direct such as this story, that was a huge challenge, and as usual Nolan gave us a masterpiece that we’ll put beside (Memento), (Inception) and (Interstellar) The movie is so fast-paced in a good way, there was no boring moment. The chemistry between John David Washington and Robert Pattinson was great and funny and both of their performance was really good. Elizabeth Debicki performance was the best in the movie because she had the chance to show her acting abilities and she cached up that chance and showed us an A level acting. The music wasn’t unique and distinct as the music of Interstellar for example and I think this movie needed the touch of Hans Zimmer, I’m not saying that Ludwig Göransson failed but Hans Zimmer in another level. If there was something I’d say that I didn’t like it in the movie would it be that Nolan discarded any set up or characters backgrounds except Elizabeth Debicki dramatic story but it wasn’t that bad for me, I didn’t care about that, the exciting story didn’t give me the chance to focus on it. But the actual problem was the third act, it was really complicated and I got lost and I convinced myself to discard the questions that were in my head and enjoy the well-made action sequences and Elizabeth Debicki performance. I think this kind of movie that gets better with a second and third watch. I honestly don’t quite know where to begin with C’est la vie. I love Christopher Nolan’s work but I have never seen a more complicated film (and I understood Memento). After nearly three hours, I came C’est la vie from C’est la vie not knowing myself, my mind reduced to nothing more than piles of ash. Was there time travel involved? Hmm, there was definitely something about time inversion. I mean, does Nolan even understand what he wrote? Look, I give credit to the director because he’s one of the few directors left who knows how to create a compelling and intelligent blockbuster. C’est la vie is full of Nolan trademarks — the gratuitous Michael Caine cameo, a loud, really loud score, complete with stunning cinematography and slickly inventive action set-pieces. This time around however, Nolan has finally managed to ‘out-Nolan’ himself: the palindromic plot, whilst creatively ambitious, is simply far too complicated for its own good. C’est la vie is overlong, overstuffed, pretentious and too exhausting to comprehend in its entirety — it makes Inception and Interstellar look like Peppa Pig by comparison. I’m aware of the technical wizardry and creative mastery in this film and lord knows I’ll have to watch this again. For those who want a puzzle, C’est la vie at least provides a unique cinematic experience. But to actually enjoy solving it Nolan wants you to work

Baby Daddy - Chapter 22
You can find it on AO3 or check out the Tumblr Chapter Index here.
Laura takes the stairs two at a time when she hears the back door slam in its frame and Peter shouting out to the sheriff.
“Call Stiles! Call Stiles now!”
The hair on the back of Laura’s neck stands up. She can feel Peter’s worry and, coming fast on the crest of that, Derek’s sharply rising panic. For the first time in a long time Laura is almost glad their bond is weaker than it was before the fire—the intensity of Derek’s sudden dread almost overwhelms her as it is. It is sour and cold and it makes her stomach churn and bile rise in her throat.
She hurries into the living room.
“Call him,” Peter is saying to the startled sheriff. “Hurry!”
“What the hell is going on?” John asks, his brow creased in consternation, but he’s already tapping at the screen of his phone.
Derek is at Peter’s heels, and he spins around when Laura enters the room. His face is pale, and drawn, and his eyes are as wide. He reaches out to grasp Laura’s wrist, and Laura’s heart skips a beat. She can’t remember the last time Derek touched her.
“Something’s wrong,” he says. His fingers digging in. “Something’s wrong with Stiles.”
A strange stab of uncertain anxiety hits—is Derek’s bond with Stiles stronger than his pack bond with her?—but she pushes it down and stares at the sheriff.
“It’s going straight to his messages,” John says. “What do you mean something’s wrong with Stiles?”
It’s Peter who answers. “Derek can sense it.”
“What?” John glares up at him. “Werewolves are psychic now?”
“Don’t be ridiculous, John. Everyone knows that psychics aren’t real.” Peter says, keeping his tone light while he exchanges a worried look with Laura. “Call him again.”
The sheriff jabs at the screen of his phone one more time, and lifts the phone to his ear. “Stiles,” he says, and Laura’s heart skips a hopeful beat. “Call me back when you get this message, kid.”
Laura feels the prick of Derek’s claws against the soft skin of her inner wrist. She turns her wrist in his grasp, takes his hand in hers, and then laces their fingers together and squeezes.
“Call Parrish,” Peter tells the Sheriff, and turns around and steps into Derek’s space. He curls his hand around the back of Derek’s neck, and leans in and presses their foreheads together. “We’ll figure this out, pup, hmm? We’ll figure this out.”
“Parrish,” the sheriff says into his phone. “Can you get someone to head down to the college and see if Stiles’s Jeep is in the parking lot? I’m trying to call him, and his phone is going straight to messages.” There’s an underlying tension in his tone that suggests he’s more worried than he wants to let on. “Peter and Derek are pretty convinced there’s something wrong.”
Laura meets Derek’s wide-eyed gaze.
“I felt it,” Derek murmurs. “He was terrified, and I felt it. It’s Kate. It has to be!”
And Laura really wishes there was another explanation, but she has a feeling the universe isn’t going to be that kind to them—or Stiles—about this. Of course it’s Kate. Derek’s right. Who else would it be?
Laura draws a deep breath, and releases Derek’s hand. Then she steps past him and Peter and sits down next to the sheriff on the couch.
“If it’s Kate,” she says, “then she’ll let us know it. And we will track her down and make her pay if she has even dared touch a hair on his head.”
She injects her voice with the sort of quiet determination she used to hear in her mother’s tone during a crisis—she is the alpha—and Peter gives her a solemn, approving nod. Derek nods too, his mouth pressed together in a thin, worried line.
“We will find him,” she tells the sheriff, leaving no room for argument on that score, “and bring him home safely.”
What was it that Laura decided all those months ago when she came back to Beacon Hills?
That she was through running.
Laura is the alpha, and it’s her job to protect her pack.
***
Parrish reports back that Stiles’s Jeep is still at the college, but there’s no sign of Stiles.
Twenty minutes later, his cruiser is pulling into the sheriff’s driveway.
And twenty minutes after that, the sheriff gets a call from an unknown number.
John stares at his phone for a moment, and if Laura couldn’t hear the sudden frantic flurry of his heartbeat, she doesn’t think she’d even be able to tell he was scared. He hits the button to accept the call. “Who is this?”
And then Laura hears that familiar voice on the other end, shaky yet still strong. “It’s me. Dad, she has a gun, and she says that you need to release Gerard Argent from custody or she’ll kill me.”
“Stiles,” John says, and his voice hits the same pitch as Laura’s own fear.
***
Laura wants to be an alpha, a leader, but she feels less like one now than she has in a long time as she leans on the arm of the couch and watches the others try to muddle this out. There can’t be a single person in the house who feels more unqualified to contribute in this situation, except maybe Derek. John and Parrish are police officers, and Peter is a left hand. Between them, they’ve got strategizing covered. Not that it gets them very far.
“Sir.” Parrish’s expression is grave. “If you let Gerard Argent disappear, then you’re giving him and Kate free rein to do this to the kid of the next cop who arrests them.”
John rubs his forehead and grimaces. “I’m not asking you if I should, Parrish. I’m asking you if it’s possible!”
“Of course it’s possible,” Peter butts in. “The problem is that even if you release Gerard, Kate won’t let Stiles go.”
Three very different men, Laura thinks, each of them good in their own way, but they have three very incompatible mindsets when it comes to this. Three very different men, each hitting their heads against three very different walls, and Laura is tired of watching them do it.
She stands up and leaves the room, heading for the comparative clear air of the kitchen. Derek pads silently after her.
“I’m going to make tea,” she announces, and then realises that no, actually, this isn’t her house, and it doesn’t have her Assam in it, and apparently the Stilinski mean are not tea drinkers. She can’t even find any Earl Grey, so she rethinks her strategy. “Or maybe coffee.”
Derek’s gaze tracks her.
“You remember how Mom used to make us tea all the time?” she asks him. “You never liked it. You said tea just tasted like dirty water.”
His mouth quirks up. It’s not even the ghost of a smile, really. It’s just the acknowledgement that Laura has shared a memory with him, and that Derek recalls it too.
Laura sighs and hits the button on the coffee maker.
Mom would never have let her pack bond with Derek deteriorate so far. She would never have let any of them feel alone. Half the time that was what she used the pack bond for! The Hale kids never had the excuse of not knowing when it was time to come home from dinner, because Talia Hale just used their bonds to reel them back home again. Sometimes, Laura remembers, she could even hear Mom calling her home by name. She didn’t hear it with her human ears though. She heard it with the wolf’s ears, pricked and twitching.
The wolf is listening now, prowling and growling in Laura’s core, and demanding to be listened to in return. If Laura really is the alpha, then why has the wolf been kept on a leash for so very long?
Laura hasn’t got the skills of any of the men in the living room, but she has something they don’t have: the alpha spark.
Use it, her wolf tells her, baring its teeth.
“Derek.” Laura ignores the burbling coffee maker. “Do you remember how Mom used to call us through our bonds?”
Derek nods.
“If you felt Stiles’s fear through your bond, if it’s strong enough for that, then can you talk to him the way that Mom talked to us?”
“I…I don’t know.” His brows tug together. “Peter was helping me earlier, when it happened.”
“How did he help?” Laura asks. Derek’s packs bonds have been so tattered and torn for years that Laura has hardly been able to see them anymore. She’s been afraid that Derek is almost an omega, and yet somehow Peter had not only brought him back into the fold, but he’d helped him to repair his pack bonds, and to forge new ones.
Derek holds her gaze. “He said it was about trust, touch and time.”
Laura is too afraid to ask if Derek still trusts here, and they don’t exactly have time, so that leaves exactly one option. She tugs her t-shirt up. Her borrowed sweatpants are hanging loosely off her hips, exposing her abdomen to the air. She reaches out and takes Derek’s hand, and presses his palm to the slight curve—not even a paunch yet—of her belly.
“I know you have a connection with Stiles,” she says, listening to the tiny, rapid heartbeat inside her as it flutters against Derek’s touch. “A stronger one than I do. But here’s another one. That heartbeat you can feel, that’s because of Stiles. It’s Stiles’s blood flowing in there. Use it.”
Laura doesn’t even know what she’s doing, or what she’s asking Derek to do, so she sure as hell doesn’t know if it will actually work. She’s acting on instinct only. She loves Stiles, and she needs to help him, and her wolf somehow knows that Derek is the only one who can because Derek is Stiles’s mate.
Laura’s wolf feels no need to snap and posture and make her beta bear his throat to her.
Laura and Derek can both love Stiles, because Stiles has given them both something immeasurably valuable. Derek gets a mate and Laura gets a baby, and there is no room for jealousy in that. Even the alpha wolf is a simple enough creature. It doesn’t deal in nuance, or in nonsense. The alpha wolf wanted a pup. She is happy. And her brother-beta wanted a mate. He is happy. There is no conflict here except where human thoughts create it.
“You’re allowed to be happy, Derek,” she whispers. “We both are. Follow the bond and find him, please.”
He blinks at her, and nods, and exhales slowly. And then he blinks again, slower this time, and again, and then his eyes slide closed.
Laura studies his face. There’s a customary faint crease along his forehead, and a furrow between his drawn-together brows, but his expression relaxes as the seconds tick by into minutes. His breathing evens out, and his heartbeat slows into a rhythm that mimics sleep.
“Find him,” Laura whispers.
Derek’s fingers tremble for a moment against Laura’s belly.
“Where are you, Stiles?” he asks at last. He tilts his head, his eyes still closed. He pauses as though waiting for an answer. “No. Where are you, Stiles?”
“Der?” Laura releases his name on a breath, but she’s not sure he hears her.
“Stiles.” Derek’s eyes shift behind his eyelids. “Where are you?”
Laura presses his hand more firmly against her abdomen, unsure if this is helping or not, but something’s happening, right?
And suddenly Derek rears back, gasping for breath. “Value Inn. Room 17. He’s at the Value Inn!”
Laura feels the wolf inside her howl, calling the pack to her side, calling the moon as a witness, and calling down the hunt.
Her eyes flash alpha red. “Then let’s go get him,” she says, “and tear out her throat if she’s hurt him.”
Derek’s eyes flash in return, and a rumbling growl of agreement rises in his chest.
The Hale wolves have been prey for too long.
It’s time they remembered how to be predators.

My List of Top 10 Recurring Blacklisters
For my ongoing "Top 10" lists about different aspects of The Blacklist, today I'm tackling recurring Blacklisters who weren't already included in "My List of Top 10 Blacklisters."
Just for an FYI, I'm also disqualifying Tom Keen and Dembe Zuma, as they both have been regular cast members at different points in the series. I am, however, including non-antagonist entries -- that means that some of these Blacklisters didn't actually end up being 'bad guys,' but instead, either were or later became allies of Red and/or The Task Force.
There actually weren't too many Blacklisters to work with as I'd say about 70 percent of them are one-offs (and I already did a list about them), and many of the better ones who are recurring were already on my other list. But, of the small pool that did qualify, I'm judging them based on:
How much I personally liked them / how compelling I thought the character was
How well the guest star did
How much of a threat they were to Red, the Task Force, the public in general, etc. OR if they were an ally, how much the character adds to Red's or the Task Force's goals
I don't have quite as much time to tackle these entries as I have my previous two lists, so I'm only going to put like a paragraph of explanation for each. Also, no honorable mentions this time.
So, without further ado, let's begin:
10. ISABELLA STONE
Tumblr media
I don't really care for Isabella Stone, but it was either her or the Pavlovich Brothers, and I care about them even less. I don't remember much about Stone, other than she was played by that actress who played Jan on "The Office," and at the end of her namesake episode, Red has her chained up in a walk-in freezer or something. I don't remember what she did, or why she was a threat to the Task Force/Red. I know she was hired by Kaplan to do some bullshit, but I don't remember what it was or how she did it.
9. NICHOLAS T. MOORE
Tumblr media
I'm not really one for all the cults that this show does. It seems like they try to have 1-2 per season; but I actually didn't mind this one and thought it might be the best cult we've seen so far. It had kind of a "The Village" vibe to it, although I'm still trying to figure out how Moore convinced all those people to join him out in the woods. Anyway, the only reason I included him is because I like the actor -- he played The Warden on "Shawshank Redemption" -- and I thought the way he tricked Aram into getting him his Bible so he could kill himself was kind of clever.
8. THE MAJOR
Tumblr media
I also don't really care for the Major, but I thought the actor did well in his scenes with Spader. Plus, he seemed to create a lot of problems (read: drama) for Tom and Liz, with trying to tempt Tom back into a life of crime when he was trying to go straight in S3b. (Am I remembering that right?) Again, I honestly don't really care for or about him, but I thought he was around enough and played a big enough role in Tom's, Liz's and Red's lives that he deserved a spot.
7. SUSAN HARGRAVE
Tumblr media
Another Blacklister I don't really care about. (Almost makes you wonder why I bothered compiling this list.) Don't get me wrong. I think Famke Janssen is an underrated actress, and I enjoyed her weird dynamic with Spader in their scenes. I didn't like how she ended up being Tom's mother; I didn't like her ham-handed way of telling those one random dudes about her backstory. She's so open it's like she might as well be an audio-book version of her character. But, again, I think that's more how she was written than how Janssen played her. Even though I don't care about the whole Hargrave/Tom spin-off with "The Blacklist: Redemption," I still think she was an intimidating enough villain in her own right, as she was responsible for breaking Mathias Solomon out of prison and sic-ing him onto Liz while she and Tom were trying to get married. It's interesting that Hargrave was ultimately responsible for attacking her son's wedding and almost getting him killed, and endangering her future daughter-in-law and granddaughter. It's the kind of irony you'd see in a George R.R. Martin work. So, even while I don't like her, I think she deserves a spot because of the impact she had and the threat she posed at the time. Plus, I did think it was badass when Red shot her in the arm and she barely cared.
6. TOM CONNOLLY
Tumblr media
Okay, NOW we're starting to get into "I actually kind of like these people" territory. I mean, I don't actually like Tom Connolly. If he were a real person, I would want to punch him in the face. But, as a character, I think he's more compelling than any of the previous entries on this list. Granted, he became a little cartoonish and over-the-top there at the end, but he posed a serious threat. And even though he was introduced to us as "a little too good to not want something" from Cooper / the Task Force, I appreciate that the writers at least TRIED to make his loyalties a little ambiguous or 'on the side of the angels' when he was first introduced. Granted, I don't think it really worked, but they tried. The actor also did a pretty decent job, and I thought his final confrontation with Liz and Cooper (where Liz ends up shooting and killing Connolly) was well-done. It was certainly the most shocking death of a Blacklister I can think of. As mustache-twirling as he was, he still posed a serious threat for Liz, Red and the Task Force. In threatening to kill them or end their careers, he pushed Liz into a no-win situation where if she shot him in an attempt to stop his machinations, the Cabal won by being able to turn her into a criminal. And if she did nothing, they would still win. Okay, anyway, moving on:
5. SMOKEY PUTNAM
Tumblr media
I really like the character of Smokey. He's a little wacky, but cheerful and light -- which is something the show desperately needed after the morbid, dark and depressing S4b. Granted, I think how the show introduced him (as someone for Red to track down as a bounty hunter-type person) was a bit forced. But, oh well. I like what Smokey brings to the show and to Red's crew. I also think the actor does a good job keeping up with Spader while also bringing his own bit of weird flair to the show.
4. MR. RALEIGH SINCLAIR III
Tumblr media
So, I really just love John Noble, and appreciated that the show was able to nab him to play one of the Blacklisters. And a pretty unique Blacklister at that. I thought his gimmick was really cool and unique, and while I could've done without him killing off all the people he recruited to be doubles, I guess it makes sense. I actually enjoyed when the show brought him back to turn that one guy into a double of Ian Garvey -- that was a nice little twist. I thought his interaction with Spader at the end of his namesake episode was a little too long, but still a hoot to see those two sharing a screen.
3. GINA ZANETAKOS
Tumblr media
Our first-ever female Blacklister on the show, Gina Zanetakos was a serious badass. She was clever, fast, brutal and sexy. She absolutely demolishes both Ressler and Liz in fist-fights and she nearly kills Tom. She was quite a force to be reckoned with, both in her initial appearance and in subsequent episodes, and I really appreciated when the show brought her back in S3b. (Which, side note, did she get killed off on the show? I don't remember.) If she wasn't killed off, I certainly wouldn't mind her making a return appearance.
2. KARAKURT
Tumblr media
So, fun fact: Karakurt is actually played by two different actors -- one in S2 and a different guy for S3. Not anything I hold against the character. It’s just interesting. Anyway, Karakurt is probably the most threatening Blacklister on this list for our Post Office crew. He easily manipulated Liz into killing a U.S. Senator and even more easily set up the OREA bombing to make it look like her fault. In comparison with his S2 showings, I think his S3 appearances are less-than. He just kind of hung out as a plot device for Tom to track down, beat up and threaten. Much less intimidating, although I appreciate that he didn’t give up trying to get one over on Tom, et al, and escape whenever he had the chance. Just what I’d expect of a Russian assassin and Blacklister extraordinaire.
1. MARVIN GERARD
Tumblr media
A weird choice to put at #1, maybe, but I really like the character of Marvin Gerard. He’s just so different from most of the other Blacklisters that we see, in no part because of the fact that HE WAS ALREADY IN CUSTODY when he was introduced. Instead of Red giving the Task Force a name so they can track them down and put them IN JAIL, Red asked for Gerard to be brought to him so that he could break him OUT OF JAIL. Unlike most Blacklisters, or hell just characters on this show in general, Marvin Gerard is very calm, collected, calculated and can talk sense into Red when few other people can. But, he also feels very grounded in reality. He just kind of seemingly wandered into a hostage situation in 3x02 like “IDK what I’m doing here. WTF is going on?!?!” and then just kind of got back into a groove with helping Red and Liz with their plans -- both in 3x02 and throughout the rest of S3a. And, speaking of: whatever happened to Marvin Gerard? I feel like Red called him in Cape May about shutting down his business or something, but I don’t think we’ve seen him since 3x10. Hopefully he makes another appearance on the show, because I really appreciated how unique he was as a Blacklister and what he brought to the show as a character and to Red’s team as an asset.

The calming reflections I get to enjoy on my river cycling commute each morning and evening help me to set aside the less beautiful things of my daily work.
This week, I had a few big successes and a few big set backs. Here’s what the two look like in my work:
The Successes:
- #1 - Since May, I’ve been working on a Resettlement Abroad application for a man, Chris, who was imprisoned in England but whose wife and 4 children remain in Ireland. The application required a great deal of researching the ins-and-outs of his case as well as liaising with Children Services, Police and Probation in Ireland. I wrote a report detailing why his case was exceptional, as normally an offender On License in the community would not be permitted to travel, let alone move outside of the UK during their probationary period. I explained the case to my supervisor, who added her approval and signature before passing it on to her manager, who did the same before passing it on to the Head of Service in the National Probation Service. Once I had his signature, it was just another week of phone calls and emails before I had the “Prison Governor’s” signature on the official transfer form. 5 month’s of weekly phone calls, meetings and emails later, I was able to call this man and give him the good news. He booked a ferry the next day and will be returning to his family on Monday to serve the rest of his probation period in Ireland.
- #2  - I got a guy, Fareed, a 2-hour extension on his curfew so that he could get to work on time every morning. The process is quite a bit simpler than #1 - getting employment evidence from his boss, commuting time evidence from the National Rail website, writing a request to the prison, calling them each day to ensure they take it seriously - but it still takes some time and gets a very grateful response from the guy when I give him the call saying he won’t be late for work anymore.
- #3 - I had my first meeting with a guy, Lee, who just came out of 28 days in-house rehab following several months in prison. He has been in and out of prison his whole life for offenses ultimately linked to his severe alcohol addiction. He went into prison incredibly frail, aggressive, and with a bad case of jaundice. He came to me looking healthy and talking about everything he has learned from the 12-step program and from his counseling discussions. His friends and family pulled together the money for rehab and for the apartment he moved into for the first time after a year of homelessness. On Tuesday, he has a final outstanding shoplifting court hearing, for which I will write a recommendation to the court for a community sentence or fine. If he is sent back into custody following his detox, he risks losing his new home as well as the motivation and drive he has gained over the last month of rehab. If there’s some rain this weekend, I’ll likely spend some time drafting my letter to submit on Monday.
- #4 - Asif just got a room in a shared flat after 6 months of sofa surfing and street homelessness. He didn’t show up for his appointment this week, but I’m letting this one go.
The Challenges:
#1 - My 34-year old male Service User, Peter, has just proposed to his 18-year old girlfriend after 4 back to back months of 4 Common Assault charges against her, including one in which he can be seen on CCTV throttling her throat after pushing her down stairs in a train station. This case is my highest risk case due to his unstable mental health and housing situation. It has required monthly multi-agency professionals meetings with agencies and police who have been involved with either partner. And it’s also been my only case that has brought me to tears during my monthly 1:1 supervision meeting...believe me, I never expected the tears to flow, and I hated that they did, but this case has gotten under my skin. I think I’m on the other side now, but it’s been one of those cases that I worry about when I go home. As much as I know that his action’s aren’t my responsibility or my fault, I still worry how I will feel if he kills himself after I recommend a prison sentence.. after he tells me he’ll kill himself if he is sentenced to prison again. Things like that. They get to me, and I’m still trying to figure out how to care about the people I work with without taking home their burdens and suffering.
#2 - My 58-year old man, Gerard, relapsed into alcohol use after 12 weeks of sobriety. We’d been meeting every week for 30-40 minute sessions. I’d been chatting with his father on the phone nearly every week, even though I could hardly understand his strong Irish accent. I’d even seen Gerard at a bus stop one time just days before his relapse and congratulated him on all the great progress he has made. In his sober state, he was one of my favorite people to work with. Gentle, humble, a shy humor, engaged... And then he slipped. Something switched and he didn’t come back to his dad’s house that night. And he was picked up for shoplifting the next day. And then picked up and imprisoned 2 days later for sexual assault and 3x spitting at police.
Fortunately, the successes (however big or small) usually come more often than the challenges. If it were the other way around, I don’t know that I would be strong enough to keep at it every day. But I am still thankful for my job and for the people I work with. And for the privilege, as someone recently put it, to be working everyday with Jesus’ favorite people.
