INT: To be totally honest, coming here, I didn't know who I was going to meet. From a personality perspective, you read all sorts of things about you. RUSSELL: You do, don't you? INT: Do you feel that this image of 'Hollywood's bad boy' is overblown? RUSSELL: Here's the thing mate, I'm not from Hollywood. I go there to work. But it's all made up and I'm sorry to burst your bubble. What do you think the whole tough guy thing is? I put makeup on for a living, brother. That's all. That's what I do. But it's not an act. It's a perception that somebody writes and then the next person goes on top of that and goes on top of that. You know, I'm in no way, shape or form like an angry person, you know, but if you do my job. And you don't get irritated by certain points of it, right? There's something wrong with you.
#russell crowe#quotes#russellcroweedit#crowedit#croweedit#gilles gifs#if you do not want my cringe analysing then do not read further yadda yadda#but there are a couple things to note here#i think the most important one is his body language#he invited this interviewer to his farm and his safe space and they seemed to have a lot of fun#but nothing really cut deep at first#it was mostly just talking about projects and the farm and goofing off on the quad bikes#and then towards the end they end up discussing more serious matters#i do not know how it is cut but this subject seems to be dropped a bit out of nowhere#and russell is REALLY obviously not comfortable with the subject#he builds up walls & he's dismissive in his answer & trying to deflect and not feed the interviewer too much at first#his 'you do do you?' is really like a laughing scoff that in a way tells the interviewer Okay Do Not Go Here#and then during his reaction to the image of hollywoods bad boy and the image being overblown#he slowly eases a bit#first of all because the interviewer allows him to explain himself and share his thoughts without too much judgement#which helps a lot as russell deals Really Poorly with people who have their judgements ready#and i think he was afraid of that#so he starts off a bit colder with the 'here's the thing mate'#but then he removes his sunglasses and he seems a bit more... thoughtful#and imho saying Everyone Else Is Wrong etc is still a bit... a deflective statement#but at the same time his whole body language went through a Huge transformation already in the span of 15-20 seconds#I think it is fair that people ask him tougher questions and I think he is very capable of handling them these days#but you can just... tell that this subject will always be kind of elephant-in-the-room-ish#and that in many ways russell is trying to carry himself with pride while simultaneously looking like a guilty dog#ALSO i do think he is right and justified in saying this

Fahej’s complex history
I am bored, you are bored, let’s read (I am posting it in the link card later). If you have an opinion I will gladly hear it.
Fahej’s history
Family background
Fahéj doesn’t have any sibling, neither she wanted to have any. Her parents weren’t exactly the richest people, mother took care of the fields and crops, her father worked in the factory. Most of her free time she spend helping her mother Edina, building things she tried to put into the real life and strolling around with the Gypsies children. Her family also had a dog, Bernat.
Her father, Pitti, worked in the gun factory in the nearby Nyiregyhaza. He was often away, trying to help his family in the financial way. Though he didn’t spend much time with Fahéj, she loved him much and knew why he is not there. On the contrary her relations with the her mother were kind of cold. The woman that raised her had a loving hearth, but the times made her to be tough and she did what she had to do to survive. Fahéj knew that her mother loved her, but they could rarely come to terms with a lot of subjects.
Edina’s family lived in the Vaja from the ages and they held this part of the land from the long time. Pitti travelled a lot of as a Gypsy with his family, moving through the Hungary with his family. It was when they came to Vaja that he noticed Edina – one of the fairest lady in the village. He started immediately to follow her, asking her out. At first she was wary about him, but not in the long time they grew found of each other. At first Edina’s father didn’t want to trust Pitti, since the Gypsies didn’t had the best reputation all over the world, but when the man was ready to do anything for this marriage, he no longer brought objections.
Pitti’s family stayed on the wedding and after that they went into the journey once again, from time to time coming back to Vaja, while Pitti stayed in the village and took over the farm with his new wife. On the 7th of January 2042 their only daughter, Fahéj Erdélyi, was born.
By now Edina and Pitti are on the retirement, living from their small incomes and money their daughter sends them, taking care of the farm.
Childhood and teenage years
Fahéj at first didn’t actually get along with other kids – though she was talented in the school subjects, she had a few arguments about her family background . Though her classmate’s words were only a small teasing about her person, she already started to see them as a less-sensitive, unfairly placing herself on the superior position, feeling smarter than them and getting her victories whether she could beat them with knowledge.
The only kids that didn’t care much about her level of knowledge or her heritage were Gypsy’s children. She quickly befriended them – if mutual sarcastic comments and teasing could be called ‘friendship’ – her proudness breaking a bit under the witty puns from people who liked her. Fahéj started to hang out with them, strolling around the village and the area.
It would be safe to say that this was a moment when her ‘teenage rebellion’ began. Gypsy people had very bad reputation, so the gossips, those that were truth and those completely made up, spread up pretty quickly, making Fahéj sick of the town itself. Now most of her free time she spend near the lake or camping in the forest. To separate herself even more, she started to accept alcohol – drinking a lot on the meetings and coming home with not a hint what is going on while she still was underage, lowering her grades at school. Daring herself more and more, she even moved to steal some things from the shops and homes.
One of the often family arguments finally broke her proudness – hearing that she will never achieve anything if she would continue behaving like that was like a strike on her face, but the girl knew that her mother was straight to her point in this one. At the state like this she would end up living in the Vaja with the simple life, not getting to do anything, or even worse, becoming a drunkard with the broken dreams. She moved everyone aside, devoting only to studying from that time. She managed to return to the best scores in her school and her hard work was paid off when she accepted to Budapest Engineering and Robotic University.
Studies and the terrorist attack
At first she was scared of the Budapest – the first time in that huge city and being all alone here made her unsure what to do. She didn’t know anyone here and it was her first time being in the other city. It was the moment when she was afraid and seriously thought of the returning to her home.
Luckily the group of people that studied with her was quite open and most of them quickly befriended with her. It was the first time when she was feeling the part of the larger group and get attached to them pretty quickly. Moreover, she finally met someone she could call her best friend. One of the girl in the group took her under her wings, not pushing too much but also helping Fahéj to unwind.
Cili somehow managed to reach to everyone and she had that cheerful attitude that helped everyone to ease themselves whether she was around. Her free-spirit yet open attitude quickly learned Fahéj that is good to open sometimes for the new experience. They both spend a lot of time together, working together, making sleepovers and realizing stupid yet harmless ideas for the fun.
Fahéj became more open towards the other, managing to improve relations not only with other people, but also with her mothers. Now she could see how tough was the time of her childhood and after few sincere talks they both managed to make some consensus. From that time they started to repair the years of the fighting and arguing between both of them.
The whole group planned what they could do, deciding to make a joined project of new housing estates that would be friendly for both omnics and people, taking an inspiration for the Numbani’s experiences. They worked hard on it, making few trips to the important technological resorts in the Hungary and other nearby countries to see the relations between the citizens and what could be improved.
As the conference that gathered the ideas for both was about to being held on they university, the all started to work even more harder and the presentation was created to show their ideas. Many investors and important guests declared their appearance, so it was a chance for the whole group to boost their project and maybe even find a sponsor. They all were excited when the conference started, but neither of them could predict the danger. The activists decided to start and the bombs blew off, destroying part of the building and ending many innocent lives.
For almost half of a day Fahéj and many other people stayed, major wounded and not knowing if and where the rescue will arrive. She was somehow separated, but she managed to create enough space to see Cili, they both trying to lift their spirits up by jokes and reassuring words, holding hands desperately. Before they were saved, Cili passed away.
Breakdown and joining police forces
After a week of being unconscious she woke up, remembering every detail of the events that turned her life upside-down. Part of her irrationally started to blame herself for that and part of her was still mad about it. Moreover, hearing the news about the victims and finding out that she didn’t even had the chance to take part in the funeral seemed to be too much for her. The visit of Cili’s parents pushed her even further into herself as she stopped to care about anything.
Being granted a break for the recovery she spend a lot of time walking around the city, mostly finding the less welcoming pubs and places where no one asked questions and where she could drink alone and don’t care about the others. Fahéj distanced herself from others, not wanting to hear any consolation words but couldn’t ask for the support either, not knowing to whom she should ask. It slowly drifted into the direction of the smoking and alcoholism, and at that time she didn’t dare to touch anything from her projects, locking her tools in
But once again she was granted a chance. One of her old professors who heard about her state decided to visit her once time. He also suffered in the accident and from that time he was bounded to the wheel-chair, disabled for the rest of his life. It was some breakthrough for both of them, as they talked all night, discussing about their future now they both lost something and debating on the possibilities. It was a small thing but it pushed Fahéj towards the change.
Trying to make a new start, with the help of Kristóf, she decided to sign to the psychologist, asking now for help. Managing to find the job, she slowly returned to her former self, returning to the engineering and once again in her life achieving what she has previously lost, pushing alcohol and loneliness away. Graduating from the university with one of the highest score, she was now thinking what she should do in her life.
Though she still wanted to make the world a better place, her wiliness to do that was now striped of the idealism of the previous idea – she knew that the chance to do that won’t magically appear. She had to do something, take the initiative and mostly, work on herself. She got interested in the Overwatch, the global service that helped to save people. The biggest impression on her made all the constructors of the organization, especially Torbjörn who tried now to repair the mistakes from his past.
The woman decided to risk and send her application, in the meantime trying to catch the other job. In some time she was received a chance as she got the invitation for the interview, but before she managed to get into one, Overwatch was forced to disband. Not planning to give up now, she quickly assigned to the police academy, in the meantime taking the employment in one of the renowned company that helped the young people with a start in the market.
It was during this time when the idea for the ‘Boudica’ was born. Fahéj wanted to create something that would help special forces to be more efficient – the thing that would make them move faster, but at the same time made them more protected against the different kinds of bullet. She created and built the first and original Overground Battlesuit and named the first prototype ‘Boudica’ after the famous Iceni queen – a good name to say that you should stand for what is right. And the warning of what will happen if you push too much into the revenge.
That got the attention of the Hungarian government that decided to set up this in the use. Fahéj agreed to give all the rights, in return demanding of not using it in the case she would not give her agreement. After joining the rank of the police, she used it herself, though she didn’t have that chance many times. That also provided her a new career job as now she was accepted into the part responsible for creating and supporting Hungarian national defense system, creating the weapons and bombs that would be used on the polygons.
Serving in the police
The news about the terrorist attack and her university turned out to fade quickly since the attacker was never found. The woman didn’t complain, rather wanting to take care of more burning issues that could be solved, starting from paperwork and small cases to kick herself in. Sometimes she helped with more important things when the bigger group. After few years of work, her case once again showed up. Fahéj was offered a participation in this case, but she turned it down, reasoning it with lack of the experience and personal attachment to the case.
She didn’t expect that she would be dragged to this against her will, as one night she got an urgent email by mistake, in which one of her colleague asked for the meeting. Fahéj decided to show up, not knowing that both of them walked straight into the ambush. She managed to get out of it with a minor shot, the fellow officer sadly didn’t make it, giving her information that opened many old cases.
It turned out that for many years there was an omnic activists group that was responsible for many riots and acts of violence. They didn’t believe in the coexistence between humans and omnics, opting for starting one more Crisis and spread the one that was in Russia. Whole Budapest police started a chase for the gang and everyone felt that they were chasing with time before something else will happen, but every time they had the trace of the activists, the criminals managed to get away.
Finally they managed to discover the plot about blowing up the Parliament, all special units and forces swung to the action. Fahéj didn’t expect herself to be the one person to stand eye to eye with a person that almost killed her, both of them standing and aiming to each other. Though a huge part of her wanted to solve it the violent way but she tried to solve it more peaceful way. It didn’t work as a distant shooting made both of the fire, the omnic killed instantly and Fahéj with a bullet through her chest, barley managing to survive this. After that she take her time returning to her condition, taking more stationery work from that time.

Around midnight Cat Noir entered through the open window of the bathroom from his room and he got out of there heading to his bed, where he spotted Kagami sleeping and his little sibling lied next to her resting too, then the blonde lied down next to the girls, then destransformed back into the civilian form and groaned, waking the little girl up, which saw the brother and embraced the adult making him smile and pull her into his chest.
„Hey little lady“ Adrien greeted caressing his sister on the back. „Shouldn‘t you be sleeping in your own bed?“
„I wanted to see, if you would come back safe“ Hope responded as her brother lied her back between him and his girlfriend.
„We superheroes will always help each other. There‘s no way someone will take us down“ The blonde assured giving the girl a peck on the forehead. „Come go back to your room, your big bro is very tired,“ The brother noticed, then Hope lied back on the bed on the same spot as before.
„But Kagami allowed me“ Hope countered earning a nod from the blonde, which lied down on the bed nodding at the girl, which smiled at the man and closed her eyes. Adrien smiled a little at seeing the girl then he heard something land on their bedcovers and he looked down to see the kitten Shadow walk over the covers and lie himself down between the space of his and Kagami‘s legs. Adrien shrugged his shoulders and took one last look on his sister before he lied down to sleep.
„Goodnight“ Adrien wished the girl.
On the other side of Paris, Nathaniel walked up the stairs entering into the bedroom, where his wife Lila lied. Nathaniel sat down on the bed next to her, then began to pull out his shirt, while yawning afterward he dropped his shirt on the top of the bedcover, then Lila moved in the interior of it and opened her eyes to see her husband there.
„Nathy“ Lila spoke passing her index finger across his spine making him shiver, then he looked down at his wife to see her smile.
„Hi pumpkin“ Nathaniel greeted. „You‘re not asleep yet?“
„I got thirsty Nathaniel“ Lila mentioned making Nathaniel chuckle.
„Want some water?“ Nathaniel asked making Lila shake her head. „What do you wish?“
„A milkshake“ Lila answered. „A big one“
„aoy vey,“ Nathaniel wailed and got up from his bed to pick up his smartphone. „You know I have to make this right now“
„I‘ll be waiting, “ Lila said sitting up on the bed earning a nod from Nathaniel.
„Well, it says the recipe is easy so I say…..maybe in ten…..fifteen minutes I‘m done“ Nathaniel mentioned. „Uh have we got strawberries?“ Nathaniel asked.
„UH I think not“ Lila answered making Nathaniel sigh.
„Welp looks like I have to get them first, “ Nathaniel said picking up his shirt again. „Now that I‘m going to the 24h store, is there anything we need, or you?“
„If there are sweet potatoes, those would be appreciated. I heard it‘s healthy to eat it during pregnancy“
„I see if there is some“ Nathaniel said picking up his wallet, that lied on the commode of their bedroom. „I will have a quick stop down at the kitchen for Karaa to charge her energies“
„Sure baby“ Lila answered watching her husband leave followed by his kwami, that flew behind his head.
On the next morning Adrien along with Fernando picked together with a pitchfork mown grass into a wheelbarrow, they were sharing together. Adrien stomped with his fork on the grass over the wheelbarrow to give it more space, then Fernando dropped a bunch of mown over the wheelbarrow, then stung his pitchfork on the earth to grab the vehicle and along with Adrien, the two walked across the field back to a farm, where a police officer stood watching the female farmer bring out from her house a freshly baked bread to place it on a table which had knives and a few sorts of butter and marmalade shared over the table.
„Are they self-made?“ The officer asked earning a nod from the woman.
„Yes, they are“ The woman answered. „The marmalade is made by my kids. The butter is from my farm“
„Nice“ The officer mentioned, then saw a few of the group arrive to sit down on the table. „Go ahead boys and girls, farmer Juni‘s house-made bread and butter awaits you“
„Mmh it smells tasty“ A man complimented making the woman smile seeing a man starting to cut down a slice of the bread, then he continued and shared it with the people around his table.
„Hey Nando, Adrien, take a seat next to me“ Kim offered, then the two sat down next to the raven-haired man and the two picked up their slice of bread to put butter on it.
„How are you doing?“ Adrien asked his old classmate. „I‘ve heard about the fire at the Grand Paris“
„Fine“ Kim answered. „We overnighted at another hotel, which Chloé‘s mom owns too. But it‘s tragic, what happened.
„How did it come to the fire?“
„I don‘t know it exactly“ Kim answered. „I heard it had something to do with the kitchen having gas stoves instead of induction cookers“
„Okay, I didn‘t know that“ Adrien answered, then noticed on the other side of the table Raiden putting his airpods on then pressed on the home button of his smartphone to look for something. „I wonder if he heard anything about yesterday“
„I think he doesn‘t know anyone from there“ Kim pointed out earning a nod from the blonde.
Raiden was on the superhero blog, which was founded by the former high school student Alix Kubdel passing through several unopened video clips of the superheroes, then he opened one, where he saw on the cover the two superheroes Miss Vixen and Ryuko on a mother‘s day even from one year ago. Raiden pressed on the play symbol to open the video to see the heroines being interviewed by the journalist.
„River Langerak here life at the champs de mars, where many of the mothers were invited by their kids to participate on this special tournament sponsored by Gabriel, Wayhem, Mikado Catering, D‘Argencourt academy and other famous sponsors to make this day special for the moms and for their children“ The brunette journalist proclaimed on the shot, then looked back behind her, where the two superheroines Miss Vixen and Ryuko stood waiting for their turn on the microphone. „Miss Vixen, what do you think about this occasion specifically made for the kids and their mothers?“
„It‘s a sweet idea, River“ Miss Vixen answered while Ryuko nodded.
„Despite this being for kids only, would you two like to see this also for adults and above?“
„Yeah, I would find lit, if even the adults or any other people for that matter could also when possible enjoy this day here. But I think for the other‘s that won‘t be important as long as they‘re with their mother together“
„Do you agree Ryuko?“ River asked earning a nod from the blue-haired superheroine.
„I do“ Ryuko answered. „But you should never just show your love or admiration for your parents on specific days. You should do it always, cause you won‘t always know, what happens the next day“ Ryuko recited earning a nod from the journalist.
„Very wise words, Ryuko“
„This Ryuko looks familiar to me“ Raiden mumbled holding his hand under his chin, then swiped to the next video, which was older and on the clip was Super Nathan together with Viperion and Honey Bee.
„It‘s the 56th time you supers had to deal with Mr. Pigeon. How does it feel for you to defeat the same villain over and over again?“ Mrs. Langerak asked holding the microphone at the three superheroes, then Viperion chuckled along with Super Nathan about the question.
„Well...I really don‘t know, what to answer“ Viperion confessed. „It has usually been the same routine with him“
Raiden fast-forwarded the video to the end of it, then looked again around the blog for other videos finding another one with Ryuko, Cat Noir and Viperion. Raiden pressed on the play button to show Cat Noir standing by the stairs of a building along with a short woman with black hair, next to a boy with the same hair color.
„His akumatization made me think of my third time“ Ryuko spoke standing in front of Cat Noir along with Viperion, then a male journalist interrupted the two superheroes with questions for the news.
„Viperion, Ryuko a short reportage of this case, may I?“ The man asked earning a nod from the two.
„Dägé‘s mainly motivation was to protect his best friend from people in real life, that could hurt her feelings in anyways like a heartbreak, friendships, or even familiar cases. To our luck, his best friend managed to talk with him about it and we took care of the akuma right after it“ Viperion explained the man.
„According to eye-witnesses he had gotten akumatized, because someone broke the girl friends heart?“
„Did you catch it?“ Viperion asked earning a nod from Ryuko.
„He was seen phoning with her on the park and during the call he seemed very depressed until an akuma came and turned him into a supervillain“ Ryuko answered then behind her Cat Noir tapped on her shoulder and pointed down at the raven-haired boy having his forehead leaned on the girl‘s whispering something in their language, making Ryuko smile.
„Very interesting, how normal does it seem, when after an akumatization the one or other person realized the other person‘s feelings for one?“ The man asked making Cat Noir shrug his shoulders.
„I haven‘t paid attention to those details, but as long as I‘m around I caught this for about five times“ Cat Noir answered gazing at Ryuko, which winked at him.
Raiden widened his eyes at listening to Cat Noir‘s voice, then rolled them at Adrien, which was on the other end of the table, and removed one of the earplugs to listen to Adrien talking.
„They had this list of people that should be hated for having a different opinion. I left the group because it turned out into something no one seems to see it“ Adrien spoke to the man in front of him and Raiden pulled the line on his phone back to start the part of Cat Noir again.
„I haven‘t paid attention to those details, but as long as I‘m around I caught this for about five times“ Cat Noir answered gazing at Ryuko, which winked at him.
„Major of those users are just superficial jerks. No one pays so many attention to details no one cares about“
„I haven‘t paid attention to those details, but as long as I‘m around I caught this for about five times“
„Just get out of there as soon as you can‘t and block them“
„I haven‘t paid attention to those details, but as long as I‘m around I caught this for about five times“
„I‘ve done this a lot, makes everything better“ Adrien assured and Raiden listened another time to the voice of Cat Noir and shook his head.
„This must be a coincidence“ Raiden mumbled. „I don‘t think they look that alike“ Raiden hold his phone next to Adrien‘s head to check the details noticing from his chin up to the nose it was just like Adrien‘s and he thought about Adrien telling him the number of information of the miraculouses. „But he was able to tell a lot about the superheroes and…..“ Raiden opened the Facestargram app and typed down Kagami‘s full name landing on a list filled with many persons with the same name and he clicked the first profile, which had shown her to be in the French capital living and as he opened it he saw, that it was the Kagami Tsurugi he wanted to look for and he opened her profile picture, where she was leaning towards a wall in her fencing suit and held her saber with the point down at the ground looking up at the sky. Raiden zoomed into the picture and screenshotted it, then switched back to the video to zoom into Ryuko‘s face to picture it. Afterward, he entered into the gallery and opened the picture of Ryuko, then added Kagami‘s to it and expanded it to compare them and shrieked at the resemblances of the blue-haired persons. „That‘s impossible“ Raiden murmured quietly observing Adrien laugh at one of his friend‘s comments.
„That‘s just pointless“ Adrien stated making Kim and Fernando laugh.
Raiden kept his eyes on Adrien, then next to him a teenager offered him, honey, then he shrieked at her offer, but took it and used it to spread it over his slice of bread glancing back at the blonde, which picked up a glass filled with dark coffee and Kim had poured out into his cup milk from the vase.

Six Organs of Admittance Interview
Ben Chasny
In preparing for the first album of non-Hexadic Six Organs of Admittance music since 2012's Ascent, Ben Chasny had a think about what he'd be saying in his own tongue for the first time in a half-decade. As ever, a head-full of ideas were driving him to think and speak music as a spirituality superimposed onto a reality, with the ghosts of both whispering at each other. In the end, what sits in our listening ears is the sound of communion. ‘Burning The Threshold’ brings a wealth of Six Organs-styled lightness into one of his sweetest musical meditations yet. With this new music, Ben Chasny has created a potent tonic for our times. The gentleness found here, balanced on top of his classical asceticism, provides love, forgiveness and an ever-wider view, with the understanding of our circular path in this lifetime… We talk to Ben Chasny about being more playful, sequencing a record and Shirley Collins…
TSH: What led you to gravitating towards themes and topics in relation to writers, theorists, philosophers and other musicians for this latest record?
Ben: Well, stuff like that usually influences Six Organs records. I don't think it's different than any other musician. Interests seeps into the work. It just creates a sort of framework from which to hang stories and melodies and keep a record cohesive and of one piece. I try not to make anything too overt and I don't think anyone would really pick up on that stuff when listening to the record. It's just a secret skeleton I use to put the meat of the record on.
TSH: In what ways did you outline production values that were more optimistic with this album?
Ben: I used a new tuning for the guitar on this record that I felt was lighter. I also tried to write music in more major keys than usual. I generally tend to write in minor keys. Also, with the lyrics, I tried to keep things a bit playful. It was all a bit of an experiment for me. My safe space is generally darker.
TSH: How would you sum up your daily surroundings as the record was coming to fruition?
Ben: The original basic guitar tracks were recorded on my friend's farm on a mountain in Vermont. I was housesitting for him for a week and he had built a great music shed, so I took advantage of that. I had to quit at dusk because he has a pond filled with frogs who really started to act up when the sun went down. After that I took the tracks to Chicago where I worked with Cooper Crain on building the tracks up with other instruments.
TSH: Was it vital that most aspects when forming the record went hand in hand with capturing the specific emotional atmosphere of the moment?
Ben: I don't think so. The tracks were recorded over such a long period of time that they ended up soaking up all sorts of ideas. I don't generally concern myself with emotion when I am recording. I generally try to capture slivers of ideas. I think I find working with the emotions too manipulative. I like to let people have their own emotions.
TSH: Were there much unfamiliar tonal elements incorporated within the album?
Ben: In a way. As I mentioned, I thought about more major keys and major 3rd intervals on this record more than I usually do, so that was a bit new to me. I also tried to keep the harsh drones out that have sometimes crept into Six Organs recordings. It seems I usually can't help myself and have to balance out the pretty with some ugly, but for this record I tried to keep it pretty.
TSH: Did you identify ‘Things As They Are’ early on as the album opener?
Ben: No, I shuffled that playlist around a lot. It takes me a while to get the proper order. I think I had it 4th or 5th when I did my original order in the studio. Ordering a record is a great puzzle unto itself when making a record. Sometimes I feel I am good at it, other times I need some help.
TSH: Was there a certain mood and feel that informed the track ‘Around The Axis’?
Ben: I wrote that song specifically with Ryley Walker in mind. I really enjoy his guitar playing because he has such an English style, which I can relate to. I thought it might be cool to do something sort of in the Jansch/Renbourn style. Then he recorded and I think it might have turned out more Jansch/Jansch style, which kind of cracks me up. He's a great player.
TSH: What would you say mainly provided the impetus for the song ‘Reflection’?
Ben: With that song, I was sort of trying to go back to the sound of earlier records like Dark Noontide. I also wanted the last song to have sort of a come-down in terms of instrumentation so it's more stripped back.
TSH: What constraints do you mainly have to overcome whilst forming new music?
Ben: I have to have a clean workspace. It's terribly annoying. I might get inspired, but if my workspace is cluttered, I need to clean it first. Sometimes by the time everything is tidy the inspiration has passed.
TSH: In recent times, have there been many personal highpoints during your touring travels?
Ben: I just played in Paris for the opening of a building. I was invited by the architect, Eric Lapierre. That was a really amazing experience.
TSH: How much are you looking forward to playing acoustic in the States?
Ben: Very much. The band will be Elisa Ambrogio, Donovan Quinn and myself. We will all be on guitar. We've been friends for a very long time, so I expect it to be a really fun tour. I'm also looking forward to playing the new songs.
TSH: You’ve previously mentioned ‘fear is interesting’ – how do you feel about this since the few years you said it last…
Ben: I have no idea what I meant by that. I actually don't even remember saying that. I suppose it is true? So strange. I wonder where my head was at when I said that.
TSH: For yourself, is it a key aspect to keep it challenging for yourself by having parameters and boundaries in place to overcome?
Ben: Maybe not so much to overcome, but I do like to keep each release within certain parameters. It helps with creating a cohesive work, which is something I try to achieve, though I'm not sure how much I succeed. But it's a goal.
TSH: What was your verdict on the new Shirley Collins record?
Ben: Amazing. I was just saying the other day to a friend that her re-entry into the world of music is one of the few things that is joyful in 2017, everything is considered.
TSH: Outside of music, what brings about most joy on a daily basis?
Ben: Friends.
TSH: Finally, what are the primary incentives that you bear in mind with your future musical endeavours?
Ben: I suppose trying to execute the ideas that I have in my head faithfully to the ideas themselves. There's always just a few ideas that I think, "I need to do that, and then I will be done." Of course when those ideas are nearing completion other ideas pop into my head. I guess one day they will stop, and then I will just stop doing music. That won't necessarily be a bad thing. It'll be natural. But for now, there's always some pesky idea that needs completion.
