That... STINK
I know there's the whole thing of European foreigners smelling like milk to people in Japan, but if you know anything about 17th century English hygiene then I'll wager Fowler smells much worse than milk. The standard procedure even in the lowest social classes was to wash one's face and hands, but not to necessarily bathe. Before this period, bathhouses were popular both for bathing and as a site for sex work. However, with the bubonic plague recurring every so often and the spread of syphilis, along with other ideas of health risks stemming from opening up the pores to dirt and such, it was believed that bathing and water spread disease moreso than preventing it. More moralistic, religious reasons for not bathing also grew in popularity. With it being seen a vain and sinful (which I guess might be a reason Fowler might bathe simply because it would be considered indulgent?).
Tumblr media
For the rest of the body, besides the face and hands, they'd occasionally rub it over with a rough cloth and wear a fresh linen shift (basically a long shirt) to soak up any sweat, oils and scents that came from the body during the day and swap it for a new one the next day (so people tended to have many shifts / more shifts than other garments, such as the outer garments(not coats, but the rest of the outfit which wasn't in direct contact with the skin), which tended to just occasionally be aired out and frequently re-worn).
Various soaps were used, but again mainly for the face and hands. Grey soaps made of animal fat and wood ash tended to be made and used by most people, but since it was quite caustic it wasn't great for direct use on the skin. Instead, white soap made from olive oil and burnt ocean plants (seaweed, usually) was more expensive (especially in the early part of the 17th century due to the olive oil needing to be imported along with various soap taxes - which got worse in that in the latter half of the century laws were put in place banning small-scale soap production (basically making your own soap for home use) and taxing the larger scale soap production that was still legal) and thus only really used by the merchant class and upper classes. It was less caustic, so could be used directly on the skin. Fowler definitely has the money for it so it's not as bad as it could be.
Tumblr media
So, rather than washing off anything that might smell bad, it was more common to overpower existing bodily smells with perfumes instead. Said perfumes also tended to be stronger than the ones we might use today, with more emphasis on scents that better compliment the body's natural musk such as perfumes using amber and musk. That is to say, Fowler probably smells bad and I sympathise with Heiji.

This year’s movie is 7/10.
Should’ve named it Detective Conan: Tracking device tag (I’m corny)
Spoilers ahead in the cut ⬇️ And I mean a crazy amount of spoilers. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK
Set in Hakodate, Hokkaido prefecture with the theme of the entire movie about swords and the lost treasure no one can find after they hid it.
Half Japanese rich guy (with a crazy band of mercenaries) goes around and tries to steal them for himself after KID steals the two he had in his possession.
There’s just so much lore and deductions in this movie that action scenes are halved compared to recent movies.
And the amount of tracking devices the characters used. Conan, the half Japanese guy, KID, the actual murderer, even Hattori!! I can understand most but Hattori??
Let’s not forget the love story between Heiji and Kazuha. At least it progressed, but figures the ending would end up like a joke as usual and Heiji’s screaming internally.
Momiji was in the movie but she was playing “Where in Hokkaido is Hattori Heiji?” And went all over Hokkaido looking for him (Her role was basically Hokkaido PR for the viewers. She helped with the puzzle solving but the rest of the time, she’s in her helicopter finding Hattori)
Aoko makes an appearance in the movie because her father gets shot protecting a suspect. Ran and Aoko don’t meet but KID’s pretty much keeping watch over them, hoping Nakamori will wake up. KID is blaming himself for not being able to stop the shooting in time. And that scene is burned into my memory because that is one powerful moment to realize KID never wants any harm to come to Nakamori, even if KID himself is getting shot at.
Kudo Yusaku and Yukiko also show up but if you weren’t in the loop about the frenzy that happened on Twitter, to put it short, Yusaku and Kuroba Toichi are twins. Yusaku is the older, Toichi is the younger. Which makes Kaito and Shinichi first cousins.
They’ve touched on this 18 years ago in files 570-573. Toichi told young Shinichi that he’s his younger brother (in reference to Yusaku). But it isn’t exactly direct and a very odd statement to make at the beginning of the case. Yusaku was also the one to name him KID because of Toichi’s handwriting of 1412 looks like KID.
But besides that case, they don’t touch it until the movie (which is also not canon btw, including all movie OVAs and episode tie ins). If Gosho adds it to his manga, then we can consider the fact canon (so 570-573 brother fact is canon for 18 years but people are deciding to scream about it now)
This whole movie revolves around the age old question, “Are Kaito and Shinichi related?”
But the one thing everyone should be screaming about is Kuroba Toichi is alive in the movie. After being confirmed dead and come up at the very end of the movie to text Yusaku, this was a shocker. And wearing an all black version of KID’s outfit.
As for the 2025 trailer, we gonna get Kogoro in a forest. In the middle of a blizzard. Don’t ask 😂 I was just as lost

I still can't stop thinking about the M27 teaser trailer. Honestly, when the very first teaser (that had played after the credits of M26) became available online without subs or translation, I thought the new movie might have an amnesia sub-plot. Like something happened that would make Kaito forget everything related to Kaitou KID and Heiji and Conan would have to deal with that along with the rest of the movie's plot. Of course, that idea was shot down from the translation, but I got attached to it for fanfic purposes lol.
So, after seeing the new teaser, that first silly impression is slowly becoming a fully fledged fic (is it HeiKai, HeiShin, HeiKaiShin, idk haven't reached that far yet 😅)
Like yeah, I want the dissonance of KID being aware that Heiji knows Conan is Shinichi, and Heiji not really knowing that Kaito looks like Shinichi (because Kudou never tells him any details that are not important for the task at hand). If anything, Heiji probably heard that's an option from Kazuha because Ran kept complaining to her about all the times KID had disguised as Shinichi before (or given recent manga spoilers, even from Hakuba and his suspicions).
That's why when Heiji unmasks him by cutting through his top hat, KID still slips into his Shinichi disguise (after doing it so many times, I'm convinced he can without a mirror at this point). Not because Heiji will believe it, since Conan is right there, but to buy time.
Heiji, of course, is pissed off about it, and given the whole Kidzuha fiasco, he wants to cut KID in half more than play along.
But KID says that he can't help it if disguising as the people that Heiji loves will keep him safe from his wrath. While Heiji has a crisis over what kind of love does he mean, KID makes his escape (recently stolen sword and all). Heiji throws his sword after KID, like a javelin, and unbeknownst to him, actually hits the handglider. KID drops out of the sky, fate unknown.
Next day, Iori shows up to bring Heiji to Momiji's temporary place (will the plot remain in Hokkaido, dunno) as there is a sensitive matter to discuss. Turns out, they found KID somewhere. While they recognize this person looks like Kudou Shinichi, it's still pretty obvious the clothes he had been wearing was KID's outfit. Heiji manages to convince them to bring Conan along, since the suspicion for KID's real identity will fall on his "cousin" and who's better to dispel these kind of rumors.
What neither of them expects when they are left alone with KID though is that one, he doesn't know who he is; two, he doesn't recognize Conan; but three, he remembers Heiji.
For now, I think the sword has something to do with this temporary amnesia (like holding a part of Kaito's soul or sth) since he feels more like himself whenever he's close to it. I also like actual magic shenanigans in the DetCo universe because it means I can make Akako appear (if the magic is real, she can exist. That's my rule lmao).
But that's pretty much what I have of this idea.

My husb-I mean Hakuba for the bingo meme? OvO;
Tumblr media
I'm only slightly sorry for drawing your husband in his worst outfit
Anyway he's Fine (tm), like Heiji I don't go as feral for him as some and he kinda melds into the soup of Kid's Many Rivals. But I like him, he's such a dweeb. I feel like Fanon actually does more with him that makes him stand out than canon does.
I do really enjoy that he's voice by Light Yagami, I think that was a brilliant choice. Works for his Vibe and with Kaito being voiced by L, it inverts their Criminal/Detective dynamic, which is so fun. (Also they can both sing and that's super fun too)

I saw your recent post and honestly I can imagine sonoko accompanying shinichi clothes shopping just so she can sleep peacefully in the knowledge that his fashion sense won't embarrass ran in dates (I'm not saying shinichi has bad fashion sense, I'm saying sonoko says shinichi has bad fashion sense. I personally like most the outfits I've seen shinichi wearing)
Having rewatched all the movies recently, I do have very strong opinions about what the anime/movie cast dress him in. Special mentions to whatever the heck he was wearing in Darkest Nightmare... to a day to the aquarium. Or the outfit he wore in London for the confession. That one is very high up on the terrible scale as well. In both color ways. What is that, Shinichi.
Tumblr media
There is a reason fandom latched on to him wearing a turtleneck ONCE and made it a style for him, we were starved for decent fashion choices to draw him in. To me, Shinichi doesn't care much for fashion. He learned early that dressing formally is seen as being put together and then created his wardrobe around it. More than anything he has a uniform, clothes he wears repeatedly because they work for him. In most of his pre-Conan days, he wore his school uniform everywhere. It worked, was formal enough and he didn't have to spend energy on thinking about what to wear. And he translated that over to Conan with his blazer and bowtie. Less thought spent on what to wear means he can think about cases more.
The few times he looked decent when he took the antidote he wore Heiji's clothes (movie 7, the Shinigami case arc) so he gets zero style credit for those either.
Tumblr media
Thank you Heiji.
And since I watched all the movies again recently I can also confidently say that Kaito dresses Shinichi better whenever he disguises as him too. The bar is very low and easily cleared. Example:
Tumblr media
I also attribute most cute Conan outfits to Ran having bought them for him.
Personally, I see style as something more than just clothes. You can make any clothing look good by the way you wear it and how you sell it. Shinichi just doesn't care enough one way or another. Is he dressed and things are clean? Probably good enough for him.
