Why this is my favorite panel in hgsn
Tumblr media
Hgsn has some incredible art and page composition, but out of the entire manga so far, to me this is the best panel of them all. Hell, this might be my favorite panel of any manga ever. (Note: Due to respecting the scanlator's wishes, I blanked out the dialogue and replaced all necessary dialogue with the official English source)
1- Build-up
Before I get to the panel itself, lets first talk about the pages before: For context, this is in chapter 2. Yoshiki has just found out about "Hikaru", and its trying to adjust to this new reality. As they walk from school to Yoshiki's house, Yoshiki asks him if he killed Hikaru. This is how the previous two pages look like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notice how the half shading effect is done in hatch marks. This is the first sign the all-black shading is a stylistic choice used to convey something.
Look at the balance the two pages form when you put them together: half white, half black, half black, half white. They compliment each other, both in color balance and in panel shape.
We have to turn the page to hear Hikaru's answer to Yoshiki's question. This gives the control of the narrative back to the viewer. This creates tension and build-up to it, it is a common tactic famously employed by Junji Ito in his famous "page-turner" moments where the viewer has to turn the page to see the monster. Except in this instance we are not revealing monsters, or are we?
2- The page
Tumblr media
I'm not gonna get into too much detail on the page itself, I just want to point out the juxtaposition between the page composition of this page and the previous two. The last two were balanced and had all the panels closed while this one is much more liberal, bringing a feeling of unbalance, like something just shifted. I'd say the black and white balance is still there, with the Hikaru on white and Yoshiki on black panel side by side and all, which actually brings me to my next point:
3- Black and White
Honestly this could be an entire analysis post of itself, where do I even start?! Let's go from the very beginning. This is the very first time we learn of "Hikaru" :
Tumblr media
Notice how the panel is colored black. In fact, throughout the story, we see black panels being spoken by "Hikaru", usually right before he does something unnatural:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here are the only two instances we see of the Brain-snatcher's true form:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• He's literally a black blob, just like the text bubbles! And now combine that with Hikaru's white hair, and the fact his name means to be bright, and what's the brightest color but white, and there is a clear color symbolism going on:
Hikaru=White
"Hikaru"=Black
4-The Panel
And now we're back to the original panel! Taking all the other points in mind, we can analyze the panel itself
Tumblr media
First, his expression. My G-d, his expression! His raised eyebrows and his squinted eyes, making his pupils way larger, make the expression seem almost childish and pitiful. But the half black-out face turns this pity look to an ominous one. Not being able to see the face or having your face obstructed is easy path into the uncanny valley, which I think is the case for this scene. Immediately 180 from "aww the poor guy" to "what is he hiding?"
The white panel says "I like you" while the black panel says "I'm crazy for you". HOWEVER, The white bubble is by the black side of his face and the black bubble is by the white side of his face. So which Hikaru is saying that? Is "Hikaru" crazy for Yoshiki, while Hikaru just liked him, or the other way around? Did the original Hikaru ever love Yoshiki, or is that the monster's feelings? Well we don't know! That's the premise of the whole manga! In one panel!
And that's why it's my favorite :)

Remember in episode 47, when Duo is looking for Heero and Relena, and walks into a room where it looks like two people are having sex. He's shocked at what he found but it turns out the reason he is shocked is not that he walked in on Heero and Relena but because he found the scientists, case solved right?
Well, this is official art for episode 47.
Tumblr media
This artwork is from the "Gundam Wing Encyclopedia" which is also where "Chronicle of the After Colony Era" comes from, so it's very official. It has a summary of every episode and an official art piece to reflect what happens. This is the artwork for Episode 47.
There's a scene afterwards where Heero is redressing and it's even framed in a way that makes it seem they're both putting clothes back on. It turns out they're changing into astro suits but the way it's done right after the "Duo walking in on them jumpscare" makes it imply something really did happen, or at least the writers want us to think something did. Even if it wasn't what Duo walked in on, there was something going on elsewhere on Libra.
Duo and Quatre even joke before this episode, that there's no point going with Heero to rescue Relena because "they'd only get in the way".
The lyrics to Just Communication even have the theme of spending the night together in a true moment of peace amongst the chaos of war.
Tumblr media
The song literally describes the picture above with them "gazing painfully, intensely"
"Rythym Emotion", the second opening song, also has "Lithely accepting the moment with my bare skin, I want to find more gentleness".
Tumblr media
"White Reflection" is the theme song for the "Endless Waltz" OVAs, but still has the subject matter.
Hikaru Midorikawa (voice of Heero) even did a cover of this song 💖.
Tumblr media
There's also a scene in the Preventers 5 radio drama where the other pilots are asking Heero just how far he's gotten with Relena to which Heero uses spy vs spy tactics to avoid the question, even getting flustered when asked XD. It's crack and definitely not a real scenario for the boys lol but it's still considered canon character interpretations as it was written by the anime writers, includes the voice actors and is included in the Japanese Blu-ray Collection.
So, I'm not saying something definately happened between Heero and Relena in episode 47, but something went down and it wasn't Libra.

idk how I slept on this for so long since it seems like something right up my alley. Literally picked up a lot of all the 39 currently out volumes (it came with the light novel too), no questions asked. I’m only a few volumes in, but I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s giving me Ertugrul vibes (the historical Turkish drama). No, I won’t expand on that point, go watch Ertugrul!
Tumblr media
I’m committed apparently...
ROMANCE
A Sign of Affection by Morishita Suu
(7 volumes, ongoing)
Available in English
Tumblr media
Blind-buy. A cute romance between a deaf girl and a well traveled guy. I got nervous it was going to do tropes I hated, but it didn’t! It handled them maturely and I love it for that!!!
FANTASY, ISEKAI
✨Ascendance of a Bookworm by Kazuki Miya and Shiina You
(3 seasons, ongoing)
Available in English - originally a light novel
Anime - yes, I’ve been watching this not reading it yet
Tumblr media
Listen, isekai just don’t ever click with me, but this one does. There’s political drama and we get to learn about the culture and daily lives of people living in this world.
Our mc is reincarnated into a medieval fantasy world where access to books is limited, making it her personal hell. But don’t worry, she gonna do something about it! This series is so interesting and I love the character dynamics. Even if isekai aren’t your thing, try this!
DRAMA, HISTORICAL, POLITICAL
✨Requiem of the Rose King by Kanno Aya
(17 volumes, complete)
Available in English
It has an anime but I heard fans were really mad at the adaption. I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment.
Tumblr media
Normally not the kind of thing I would go for, but this series has me constantly screaming. IT’S SO MESSY, but the good kind of messy. It takes every fiber in my body to contain myself when reading in public. It features an mc who was born intersex and a battle for the crown of England.
DRAMA
My Broken Mariko by Hirako Waka
(one shot)
Available in English
Tumblr media
Saw this at the bookstore and I looked at the cover like “wow, she looks like she’s really going through it…and she’s carrying someone’s ashes, oh no…” Didn’t know anything else about it but, oof, it’s a heavy one…
DRAMA
Look Back and ✨Goodbye Eri by Fujimoto Tatsuki
(one shots)
Available in English - also on the Jump app
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Fujimoto-sensei’s more well known work wasn’t 100% clicking with me, I tried his one shots and really enjoyed them. I particularly liked the cinematic feeling and environmental story telling.
Maybe when I’m up to it, I’ll do posts on some of these that go into a little more detail on how I felt about them idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was going through the p5 official artbook yesterday and found unused confidants with no notes from the designer at all. I was obsessed with the idea of "hey, what would they be like in-game? What were the plans for them?" And. I decided to make it myself.
Here are the confidants I made out of concept art in the artbook!!

I'm going to write their confidant routes and make more polished portraits and ect, but I don't know who I should start with!

Could you summarize all the Tale of Genji references in Len'en so far? I vaguely remember you talking about those but I forgot what they were.
Okie dokie! This is a good chance for me to gather and organise what I know myself too, so thanks for the question~! So here we have:
The Tale of Genji in Len'en
The Tale of Genji (源氏物語) is a classic work of Japanese literature, written during the middle Heian Period (early 11th century), and is interestingly referenced at several points in Len'en.
But before we get into the references themselves, let's first briefly go over the story itself to get a better idea of things:
A "The Tale of Genji" Brief
Background
The Tale of Genji (源氏物語) is said to have been (at least largely) written by the noblewoman and lady-in-waiting Murasaki-shikibu.
Lady Murasaki was writing during the height of the Fujiwara clan's power and her work reflects much of aristocratic society at the time. In fact, several characters in the tale are believed to have been informed by the people around her in court at the time.
It is believed that Lady Murasaki would have written the story in chapter-by-chapter installments and delivered the tale to her fellow ladies-in-waiting, as a form of entertainment.
Story & Writing
The tale largely follows the romantic life of Hikaru Genji (光源氏), or "Shining Genji", a son of an Emperor and a low-ranking concubine. There isn't really an overarching plot, events simply happen and the characters age as the story go on.
For political reasons, Genji was given the surname Minamoto (源) demoted to a commoner, after which he pursues a career as an imperial officer.
A very unique feature of the story, is that almost none of the characters is given an explicit name and is instead referred to by some other title, like their role, an honorific or their relation to other characters.
This is also likely a reflection of court manners of the time but makes the story hard to follow at times. Future readers and translations use a number various nicknames to help keep track of the many characters. I'll only be using the most common ones still used today.
The story is large separated into two sections:
Genji's rise and fall (Chapters 1-41)
On Genji's son Karou (Chapters 45-54)
References in Len'en
Now that we've gone over the bare basics of the story, we can take a look at the three references to the tale found in the Len'en series. Notably, they're all found in BPoHC.
Kaoru Kashiwagi
Kaoru, the Emon no Kami, captain of the Goefu, gets their name from the protagonist in the second half of the story, one of Genji's children.
Tumblr media
In the story, Genji's nephew, nicknamed "Kashiwagi" (柏木), an eulogistic title for the Emon no Kami in traditional Japanese poetry, forces himself upon Genji's second wife, nicknamed "the Third Princess" (女三宮).
"The Third Princess" gave birth to a boy who is said to always have had a pleasant aroma, hence he is nicknamed "Kaoru" (薫 aroma/fragrance). On official records, he is the son of Genji, not "Kashiwagi".
Len'en's Kaoru Kashiwagi gets their name from a combination of these two nicknames, their own position of Emon no Kami from "Kashiwagi" and their ability to manipulate miasma based on Kaoru's pleasant scent.
The Dragonfly Castle — The Crest of Dragonflies
The Dragonfly Castle (蜻蛉乃城) may also be able to trace its inspiration to The Tale of Genji, although not directly.
While whether the entire castle itself is related is ambiguous, its emblem, The Crest of Dragonflies (蜻蛉の紋), is definitely related.
Below: The Crest of Dragonflies used as the Dragonfly Army's crest at the Outpost Base Camp in the Unlost Woods during BPoHC.
Tumblr media
The Crest of Dragonflies comes from Kōdō (香道 Way of Fragrance), the traditional art of appreciating Japanese incense, specifically from games played during an incense ceremony.
For our purposes, we'll be looking at the Kumikō (組香 set of incense) games under the Genjikō (源氏香 Genji incense) rules. In Genjikō, 5 bags of 5 different incense are prepared and five of them are chosen at random.
The incenses are then lit and passed around the participants one by one, where they appreciate and comment on their fragrances. Then, they mark down which of the incenses had the same fragrance by connecting five vertical lines in various patterns.
The participants then compare the patterns they have drawn with the Symbols of the Genji Incense (源氏香の図), where a list of every possible symbol is shown, paired with a corresponding chapter in the The Tale of Genji, with the exception of 2 chapters as there are only 52 possible patterns.
The pattern important to us is the Kagerou (蜻蛉 dragonfly) pattern, compare it with the emblem above an you can see it's used on the bottom of the crest.
Tumblr media
A key note to mention here, is that the pattern is likely not only used for its relation to The Tale of Genji but for the fact that incense is a typical offering for the dead in Japan, a jab at Chouki, if you will.
The Dragonfly Castle — Ukifune's Room
The eerie, black and white throne room deep within the Dragonfly Castle is called "Ukifune's Room" (浮舟の間).
Tumblr media
However, before we can get into the reference here, we must get into the deuteragonist of the second half of the tale, "Niou-no-miya".
"Niou-no-miya" (匂宮 fragrant court [official]) was Genji's grandson through his third daughter who married the Emperor, hence he is a prince.
He was raised alongside "Kaoru", who was basically a younger brother to him. However, the two were bitter rivals, so fierce were these feelings that "Niou-no-miya" would have all his clothes perfumed to imitate the natural fragrance "Kaoru" had. This is where his nickname came from.
Back to Ukifune's room, it's name references "Ukifune" (浮舟 floating boat), a noble girl from the tale caught in a love triangle with "Kaoru" and Prince "Niou-no-miya".
After her arranged marriage fell apart, "Ukifune" would come into the service of another imperial prince at Uji, there she was talked into becoming the lover of "Kaoru" by another character.
"Kaoru" would manoeuvre to keep and hide her within Uji, so that she would stay his and out of the grasp of "Niou-no-miya", but unbeknownst to him, his rival would sneak in while "Kaoru" was out to see "Ukifune".
The nickname "Ukifune" comes from one such rendezvous, where "Niou-no-miya" invites and takes "Ukifune" to a hidden house across the Uji River.
While on the boat, "Ukifune" would compose a poem where she uses a boat adrift on the river as a metaphor for how she is unsure to whom her heart belongs to.
Ultimately, troubled by being the target of affection by the two rivals, she attempted an escape by drowning herself in a river but was rescued by a Buddhist monk. She then vows to become a Buddhist nun and took into hiding, vowing to never meet "Kaoru" again.
Curiously, Ukifune was introduced near the very end of the tale that we now have and her story was never completed.
In fact, the story abruptly ends with "Kaoru" wondering if "Niou-no-miya" was hiding "Ukifune" from him, as the nun he thought was "Ukifune" (and actually was) refused his letter asking her to come back by replying that he got the wrong person.
Unlike the previous two references, I have absolutely no idea why "Ukifune" was used in the name of the throne room. Nevertheless, I am fairly certain that it is a reference to her, since searching for 浮舟 pretty much exclusively gives me The Tale of Genji.
Of note perhaps, is that ukifune later became a general metaphor for someone/something that is unreliable, although even then I'm not really sure how it connects.
What Does This Mean For Len'en?
While I can't concretely saw what all these references to The Tale of Genji means, I do have a few ideas as to what it could possibly mean, so let's take a look at those:
The Mugenri Minamoto
There are four clans particularly famous throughout Japanese history, for how much they prospered starting from the Nara period and onwards.
These are the Minamoto (源), Taira (平), Fujiwara (藤原) and Tachibana (橘) clans, and amongst them, the first three are particularly famous for their roles in history.
We've already seen some of them referenced in Len'en, Taira no Fumikado and the Fujiwara dynasty of Devanagara being clear examples of a "Mugenri branch" of the Taira and Fujiwara clans.
If you'd remember, Genji, from The Tale of Genji, is actually a Minamoto himself. I propose, that these references points to, at least in one time in the past, a Minamoto presence in Mugenri, which JynX seems to suggest is possible.
Fall of the Minamoto
While my proof sparse, I propose that all this hints at a fallen, or at least vastly diminished, Mugenri branch of the Minamoto clan.
Key to this idea is Kaoru Kashiwagi, the Len'en one. He is the head of the Fujiwara dynasty's Goefu (五衛府 the five palace guards), palace guards entrusted with the Emperor's personal safety.
Specifically, Kaoru is the Emon-no-kami (衛門督), captain of the Emonfu (衛門府) guards. Historically, in real-life, the Emonfu (衛門府) was originally composed by the vestiges of enemy clans' palace guards as well as peasants.
It is that first bit, "the vestiges of enemy clans", that make me wonder if the Fujiwara once managed to score a decisive victory against the Minamoto, which let them swallow up many of the Minamoto, Kaoru being one such member, or a descendant of one.
It's not hard to see why a member of a fallen clan would want to change their name, and "Kashiwagi", which like I mentioned above was an eulogistic title for the Emonfu, seems like a good fit.
The Enemy of My Enemy Gets My Castle
Next, let's look at the Dragonfly Castle, it always struck me as rather odd that the castle with two references to The Tale of Genji would end up in the purview of the Taira.
Considering the Fujiwara's seemingly absolute domination over the capital in the past, perhaps the Minamoto entrusted their secrets of the Dragonfly Castle with the Taira clan, in hopes that they'd be able to make use of it to fight back against their common enemy.
This would explain how the Taira clan now seems to be the keeper of the Dragonfly Castle's secrets, as Fumikado themself confirms.
Secrets Yet Kept
If this was true though, it would seem that the Minamoto haven't completely given up either, as it would seem that they haven't told the Taira everything.
A key revelation in BPoHC, is that the castle doesn't simply invite its chosen emperor within, but that whoever it invites is actually "bait" for the true emperor it wants.
Curiously, this information comes to us via Tenkai Zuifeng, close friend and conspirator of the old dictator, Tsurubami Senri, who was the previous lord of the Dragonfly Castle.
Taira no Chouki was shocked at the revelation, although this was perhaps understandable due to their status as a branch family member and (previously) mere servant to Fumikado.
What's stranger though, is that Fumikado themself seems to have no idea of this either, the key figure the Taira were trying to install upon the throne, clueless as to how the Dragonfly Castle worked.
This is evident in the New Emperor Team's Haze Route, where upon being told that the castle has chosen a new emperor, they seem to completely believe it and panic, which wouldn't make much sense if they knew how the bait system worked.
So perhaps the Minamoto still kept some secrets close to their chest, in hopes that they may one day rise again...
Ending
And that's all I have on The Tale of Genji and Len'en.
The analyses on the references themselves are fairly solid, I'm quite confident on that front (although I do apologise for spending so much time on the tale and not much on Len'en).
However, my theory is a lot more shaky, more 20% canon and 80% extrapolation-fanfiction. Still, I do think some of the possibilities and notes pointed out are of note, even if the overall theory collapses. Which is fine of course, it's just a fun possibility is all.
Welp, I'm done now. As usual, I hope you enjoyed~! :)

Are you still doing the headcannons thing? Because I would love if you wrote some for Hikaru and Mei Mei. I actually ship them because I think the aquario girls would be adorable together.
ooooh Aquario girls!!!
-Since Wang Hu Zhong are pretty close with the main cast, they probably visit as often as they can. On these visits, Mei Mei always tries to get to know Hikaru a little more. She tries talking about their beys and giving helpful tips, dropping into the office at random with a coffee or some sweets, and inviting Hikaru out to go shopping with her. She's just really excited to have met another female blader around her age, yet alone another Aquario user!!!
-Hikaru is very reserved with her at first, a little confused as to why she's getting so much attention from this random girl. She still tries to be as polite as she can, accepting the gifts with thanks and usually declining the invitations to hang out. Eventually she confides in Madoka and asks why Mei Mei's trying so hard to get close to her, and Madoka has to explain that some people actually have the gall to act on their crushes (be they platonic or romantic). So once Hikaru had grasped the concept of someone wanting to get to know her, she finally accepts one of Mei Mei's invitations to go out for lunch.
-Before this, Hikaru had assumed that Mei Mei's constant optimism and peppiness meant that she would be super high energy and hard to keep up with. But when she takes the time to get to know her, she sees that Mei Mei is actually pretty chilled out and matches her vibe pretty well (I like to think that Mei Mei is good at matching the energy of whoever she's with, so if she's with someone like Chi Yun she'll be serious, but if she's with someone like Yu she'll be super hyper). Her relaxed optimism and genuine joy for all life has to offer is very refreshing to Hikaru. She's also surprised by just how smart she really is, given what others tend to say about her.
-Mei Mei just immediately adores Hikaru. She tries to contain her excitement as to not overwhelm her on their first official outing, but she's just so interesting! Mei Mei hangs off of her every word, greatly admiring her intelligence and how hard she works. Hikaru says she's just as intelligent as her, but she's just being nice, right? Does she really mean it? Barely anyone's ever called her smart before.
-Mei Mei doesn't hesitate to ask Hikaru out as soon as she realises she's caught feelings; she doesn't beat around the bush when it comes to romance. Hikaru is a little taken aback at first, so Mei Mei gives her some space to think about it and assures her that their friendship won't be affected should she decline. Hikaru doesn't take too long to accept, since she realises that she feels happiest and most relaxed while in Mei Mei's company.
-At first, Mei Mei would try too hard to keep their relationship exciting and fresh; always popping into Hikaru's office to deliver flowers or chocolate, trying to organise fun dates every other day, and sending about a million messages a day. She gets burned out very quickly, and Hikaru has to tell her that their relationship will only burn out faster if she tries to bring out the excitement all at once, and that spending some time together doing something they enjoy is all they really need.
-The rest of Wang Hu Zhong certainly try to make Hikaru feel as welcomed as possible around them, but when your girlfriend just happens to be closest to three martial arts masters, you just can't help but feel intimidated. Mei Mei does not remotely feel the same way about any of Hikaru's friends. She loves them, obviously, but she could kill them in an instant if needed.
-Mei Mei is a very good listener for when Hikaru goes on one of her rants about work and such. She takes in all of the information carefully and tries to help come up with a reasonable solution. Hikaru, on the other hand, always proposes violent answers to any problem where Mei Mei is being disrespected.
-Hikaru sees that Mei Mei isn't as appreciated as she should be at the Beylin Temple and that is just not acceptable to her. She brings it up to the rest of Wang Hu Zhong, who thank her for pointing out the issue and ask her how they can show their appreciation. She suggests not laughing/groaning at her every time she gets her words mixed up, since it makes her feel like an idiot when she's clearly a smart strategist, and just generally giving her more support in her own endeavors- especially when battling on her own instead of being a support.
I love girls and women and ladies <3

mye’s media list, 1/23
last month, i made my first media list--a list of four-ish things i’d like to engage with in that month.
the items on that list were:
jojolion
hikaru ga shinda natsu
pride and prejudice
when the angels left the old country
for this month, i’ve decided to take on the following:
spy x family cour 2
princess jellyfish/kuragehime
when the angels left the old country
here’s what i thought about last month’s offerings, and then a rundown of this month’s list:
last month’s list
jojolion
i kind of understand why jjl isn’t as widely read as other parts of jojo: at least, i know what took me so long to read it. i was afraid of reading the last available part, because i didn’t want jojo to be ‘over.‘
i did work up the courage to read it, and i’m very glad that i did! it gave me the same thrill that the other parts have! it had the same creativity and deeply compelling emotional core as every other part, a fabulous reminder of why i love jojo in the first place.
though i understand why people haven’t read it, i’d really suggest that they do!
stan jobin.
hikaru ga shinda natsu
god, everything about this is so beautiful in such a unique way. i usually read manga pretty quickly--i’m still trying to cultivate patience--but i really found myself slowing down to take in the gorgeous art and the haunting storyline.
yoshiki is such a compelling protagonist and hikaru (or not-hikaru) is a truly charming love interest, and the underlying symbolism... the horror of growing up gay and approaching queer desire for the first time is portrayed so well here, and it resonated so strongly with me.
there are only a few chapters out as yet, but don’t let that stop you. run, don’t walk, to hikaru ga shinda natsu--and, of course, support the upcoming official release!
pride and prejudice
i will not lie. i did not finish pride and prejudice. i was in a mood for something more action-packed at the time i was reading it, and jojolion quickly consumed all of my attention.
additionally, i found myself thinking ‘i can get the same enrichment in less time by watching the 2005 film.‘
however: i enjoyed what i read of it. i loved austen’s wit so much. i also found it really interesting to observe the way that it was written--the rules of engagement vis a vis writing have really changed in the past 200 years.
not bad! just not what i needed at that time.
when the angels left the old country
i’m sure you’ve noticed that this is on my list for both december and january--this is because i didn’t make it. i didn’t touch it at all, i just didn’t have time.
my excitement to read this book is unchanged. it’s in my kindle library. it will happen.
this month’s list
princess jellyfish/kuragehime
a favorite anime from my teenage years, but the show doesn’t cover the whole story. since i’m getting back into reading manga, i think it’s finally time to see how princess jellyfish ends.
spy x family cour 2
i have a terrible habit of keeping myself from doing fun things. i feel like i have to earn it by being productive.
i enjoyed the hell out of the first cour of spy x family. it’s time to let myself have fun with the second cour.
let’s get going! and, of course, if you have any suggestions for things to include on future media lists, feel free to reach out! i’d love to hear from you!
thanks for listening!

augh. I love sumhika so much I rotate them in my mind. It's one of my hyper fixations so if u want could u info dump Abt it a lil bit? Reading the manga n drawing them hasn't worked for me
YEAS okay one sec lemme remember everything I know
OUGH okay firstly in Super excited to see how hgsn ends only bcs most of the time a mangaka will have other works for you to get the idea of what they write like but mokmok len only has one other oneshot and the ending is SUPER weird n comfusing n doesnt make sense but its like. I rlly hope hgsn is similar just for the weird trippy vibes of it yknow ??
ALSO one if my favorite things abt it is the use of style- like for the most part all panels are correct anatonically and such but when hes trying to really get a point across thats when it rlly shines. AND THE WAY THE COMIC FORMAT IS UTILIZED like the typesetting in ch 1 w/ the bugs ough.... I love it. In a way it reminds me of Ino Asano's early work- Im def looking forqard to how Mokmok len's manga continues to grow consindering he basically just started his career
As for the manga itself im SO interested in how it progresses. ch 9 has my favorite scene n I dont want to spoil it but like In general I adore how mokmok len shows emotions and atmosphere. OOOH ANOTHER THING
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
these three drawings already have an explanation in the chapters out - the leaves in #1 are that of the forest mountain hikaru died in, and the imagery in #3 are reminiscent of a scene in ch 9. the middle one shiwd the premise of the plot w/ hikaru holding a funeral frame over his face
usually when official art doesnt mean anything mokmok len will say so
Tumblr media
(^ in reference to the meat cube official art)
buuuut these two
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DIDNT have any caption. and you coukd chalk that up to the author just not putting captions in older art but im still interested in seeing if it has any semblance to canon- esp the second one seens to be "hikaru" losing control mahbe trying to stop Yoshiki from going back into the forest? idm idk but Im looking forward to it.
Tumblr media
also this. I CANT wait to hear abt hikarus family's jinx

I need to go to sleep, but the Delicious in Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi discussion is reminding me of Attack on Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin. When the title sounds weird in English, and the Japanese isn't too hard to grasp, I can see why people prefer the Japanese. For Dungeon Meshi I feel like it makes even more sense because Dungeon is borrowed so directly from English, so "Dungeon Meshi" is not hard to say. It's shorter, even. I get why it needed an English title, because meshi isn't a commonly known word, but I bet it'll become a lot more well known now.
I feel like this might be an ongoing list of how titles get treated, as I think of them.
All English (=fully translated)
Captain Corinth
Assassination Classroom (Ansatsu Kyoshitsu)
Fullmetal Alchemist (Hagane no Renkinjutsushi)
Beyond the Boundary (Kyoukai no Kanata)
The Summer Hikaru Died (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu)
Classroom of the Elite (??)
the Grimoire one...wait, Grimgar
Your Lie in April (shigatsu wa kimi no uso)
Attack on Titan (shingeki no kyojin)
Blood Blockade Battlefront (?) (Kekkai Sensen)
The Executioner and her Way of Life (and good thing they did, too... something something virgin road)
Erased (Boku dake ga inai machi)
The Saga of Tanya the Evil...?
The Night is Long, Walk On Girl (I definitely have that wrong)
Black Butler (but I call it Kuroshitsuji so often I almost forgot about the English name)
Run on Your New Legs (?)
Laughing Under the Clouds (donten ni warau)
All Japanese (includes Japanese words that aren't proper nouns)
Akane-banashi
Oshi no Ko
Gintama
Yugioh
Haikyuu!!
Hikaru no Go
Asobi Asobase
Kagurabachi
Tegami-bachi (I think)
(Tengan Toppa) Gurren Lagann
Yamishibai
Jujutsu Kaisen
Toradora
To-rabu (?)
Uma-musume (?) ('Horse girl' just doesn't sound right >>)
Doraemon (this sound probably go in the "both anyway" category
Sazae-san?
Nanbaka
Dorohedoro
[It's probably examining which ones I put in this category versus which ones I put in 'It's Both Anyway' that's interesting]
Some Japanese, some English (/some proper noun):
Bungo Stray Dogs
My/Boku no Hero Academia
Fugou Keiji Balance Unlimited (?) (I called it the Daisuke anime, anyway)
Blue Exorcist
Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Kaiju No.8 (I'm counting Kaiju as the English word)
Ranma 1/2
Kado: The Right Answer (Sekaisuru Kado) (these categories are starting to blur)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken)
Arslan... (Arslan Senki)
March Comes in Like a Lion (sangatsu no lion) (??)
Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) (I often just call it Yona)
Gargantia on the Verduous Planet (Suisei no Gargantia)
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (... meidoragon?)
Ya Boy Kongming (Paripi Koumei) well, I guess technically that's fully translated...
Ouran High School Host Club (Ouran koukou host-bu)
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles (does it have more Japanese...?)
Wandance!
Crayon Shin-chan (I think the -chan keeps it out of the 'but both' category)
Seraph of the End (owari no seraph)
Vampire Knight (it was Vampire Kishi, right??)
Keep it but add on:
Ajin: Demi-Human
Magi (??)
Ano Hana ? (this actually seems like a good fit for this category)
Bofuri?
It's both anyway: (or it's a name/proper noun)
Bleach
Naruto
Undead Unluck
MamaYuYu
Free!
Noragami
Code Geass
Fruits Basket (had to keep the s on Fruits I guess)
SkipBeat
Hunter x Hunter
Yuri on Ice
Ruroni Kenshin
Inuyasha
Given
Yuyu Hakusho
Karneval
Boys Run the Riot
Re:Zero (??)
Black Clover
i tell c
FLCL (sorta?)
Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
One Piece
Death Note
Sword Art Online
Chobits
Macross
Sailor Moon (I guess really bishoujo senshi sailor moon)
Claymore
Kill la Kill (sorta?)
Date-A-Live
D.Gray-man
No.6
Chainsaw Man
Mob Psycho 100
Angel Beats
Brand New Animal
Made in Abyss (??)
Deadman Wonderland
Zombieland Saga (is that right? Also Saga is doing so much there)
Cantarella
Wind Breaker (?)
Cardcaptor Sakura (??)
I'm thinking it may mostly have to do with whether they were already out when I heard about them, or they gained traction before official release (...of the anime...?)
