hxh chapter 395
IT HAS BEEN 22 YEARS SINCE CHROLLO WAS FIRST REVEALED IN THE MANGA... 23 SINCE HE WAS FIRST MENTIONED... AND FINALLY........ WE ARE GETTING HIS BACKSTORY . all in god’s (togashi’s) timing. i literally couldn’t believe my eyes when i woke up to baby chrollo on the tl wednesday morning. i’m just now getting the time to scribble down all my thoughts that have been haunting me since then. is any of what i’m about to say coherent? probably not. i’m just so excited that i can barely put it into words. like. how am i supposed to function. i sure don’t know. i’ll put all my screaming + rough analysis under the read more then summarize what new things we learned about chrollo and the phantom troupe. idk how to format this so i’m sorry for anyone who braves the abyss below. anyways , without further ado ...
(the link to the chapter for anyone who is curious)
nobunaga frames the flashback with the statement “fueled by despair and anger, we were searching for a purpose...” which more of less confirms the widely accepted notion that the phantom troupe was formed to give these people something to do. after reading that, i was expecting to go into some depressing stuff right away, but instead we get to see the baby phantom troupe members kinda roughhousing each other? acting like lil rascals. so i’m assuming nobunaga’s statement comes into play a bit later.
Tumblr media
the spiders seem to have been split up into smaller cliques before they eventually formed together, these groups being chrollo/franklin/shalnark (HIS LIL MISSING TOOTH OH MY GOD), machi/uvo, and phinks/feitan.
Tumblr media
this more altruistic viewpoint further convinces me that something major must’ve happened for chrollo’s worldview to shift so drastically. here and throughout the rest of the chapter, we can see him championing the cause of sharing knowledge with others around his age instead of hoarding it. this immediately sets him apart from the uvo/machi and phinks/feitan cliques who want to keep anything remotely valuable to themselves. Hmm.
Tumblr media
i could be wrong, but the architecture of this church having crosses + pews seems reminiscent of the abrahamic religions, leaning more toward catholicism perhaps? this must play into chrollo’s fascination with catholic aesthetics in his adulthood. it seems that compared to the rest of meteor city, this church was somewhat of a safe haven.
Tumblr media
NGL it’s kinda funny little baby chrollo looked @ phinks and uvo and went hm. yeah those dudes are definitely not the church crowd. baby chrollo being able to teach himself various languages just from watching tapes that everyone else his age finds too boring to sit through though... he’s always been a little genius. interestingly enough, the compliments on his intellect never seemed to have gotten to his head? he always took them in such a good-natured way. he seemed like such a kind boy... meteor city’s elders mention how bright he is in the next page too. i wonder what they expected from little chrollo though?
“perhaps he could be of use to the elders? you think he may be able to solve the problems plaguing the city...”
very curious to know if they meant now or when he’s older. anyway, the elders took an interest in him from a young age, only for chrollo to completely disregard them when he became an adult (chrollo stealing one of their abilities for his fight against hisoka).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’m in ABSOLUTE agony. while this interaction is so cute, i can’t help but think about how paku prioritized chrollo’s life despite his philosophy that ‘the head of the spider [himself] can always be replaced’, which lead to her own death 🙁 OUCH OUCH IT HURTS... her care for chrollo and the troupe ran so deep. now we get to kinda see why. chrollo so brazenly telling paku that he loves her when it’s very likely she’s rarely (if at all) heard those words growing up in a place like meteor city......................... ah...........AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Tumblr media
HE’S A LITTLE GENIUS!!! LOOK AT HIM GO !!!
‘no way he was born here...’
it makes sense that chrollo ended up getting voted to be the leader of the troupe since his intelligence has been universally praised all along. a smart lil guy. i really can’t get over the fact he did all this just so the other kids could understand/enjoy the cartoon more 😭😭😭 that just leaves me with the same, pressing question that machi has here...
Tumblr media
‘is that chrollo?’
she must’ve been shocked to see him go from :D to :| ........... what happened to my MANS...

A/N: Hey!! Everyone wants more Quinnvoyant right? Right?? Well too bad, it’s all I have. And an au! Soulmate au where if you write on yourself, it’ll show up on your Soulmate.
--
Everyone knew that if you wrote on yourself, it would appear on your soulmate as well. And Chris Quinn was no exception to this. Though, for a long time, there was only cute things like drawings of cats and rainbows and stars. Cute poems. Reminders. It was fine enough when he was a kid but as he got older it was just embarrassing. So he would wear long sleeves and hide the writing as best as he could.
Sometimes he would talk with her, but she was too shy to reveal where she lived or who she was. Which kind of annoyed him. Wasn’t the whole point supposed to be that they would meet?
When they got to high school, they talked less. Life got busy for her. Life was busy enough for him as well. Sometimes they would check in. Sometimes it would be reminders of homework assignments, or notes in class. Just kind of easily forgetting the other can see what they wrote.
Then one day, his skin started getting covered in words, very quickly. Bright red marker showed up all over his arms and hands and it crawled all over his body. The same words over and over and over.
   “FREAK”
   “PSYCHO”
   “CREEP”
   “KILL ME”
None too surprisingly, the only place she didn’t write was on her right arm. She was too busy writing, after all.
Chris found a nearby ballpoint pen and began writing.
   “Et tu?”
The scribbling suddenly stopped. For a moment he was worried. But then the ink began running off. It looked wet and began to run down his arms.
   Tears.
After watching it a moment he began writing himself.
   “What happened?”
   “Bullies.” was the eventual reply.
   “Why?”
   “Cause it’s true.”
   “Same.”
   “What do you mean?”
Chris sighed. He knew he wasn’t like other kids. They would all avoid him, be afraid of him, or talk about him weird just cause he talked about blood and death and demons and stuff that went bump in the night. He wasn’t gothic. Not by a long shot. He just...liked gore. He liked pain. He once got into a fight. One of the kids had a knife.
   He couldn’t stop giggling.
There was something so...so thrilling, when he saw the red.
The voices in his head only encouraged it.
   “I’m a psychopath.” he wrote.
   “I don’t think you are.”
   “That makes one of us.”
“Well what makes you so weird?”
   “I… hear voices… And… I see things.”
   “Really?”
“Yeah. But I’m told it’s not-”
   “Me too.”
Chris stared at the two simple words. Somehow, it utterly stumped him. He felt...weird. He wasn’t sure why though. But he wasn’t entirely opposed to it.
“What kind of things do you see?” he asked.
“It’s hard to describe. Sometimes it’s people. Sometimes it’s just screaming. Or loud talking. Sometimes it’s colors and random pictures. What about you?”
“More about dogs and demons and the end of the world and shit.”
The rest of the writing on his body started to disappear. She was wiping it off.
   “Can we switch brains?”
“Yeah, yours sounds more fun.” he chuckled to himself. After a moment’s thought he ventured forth to ask. “So what do you imagine I’m like?”
“I don’t know. When I try to read you I get this weird image of something dirty and gritty like a horror movie. But at the same time, I also get this...warmth.”
   “Warmth?”
“Like a towel out of the dryer. It’s warm and soft and it feels like home. It’s funny... Reading your words…”
Chris felt a bizarre fuzziness grab hold of his brain. The world seemed to darken around him as she continued to write.
   “I can almost see you
   Christopher Quinn”
Suddenly Chris felt very uneasy and quickly began rinsing off their conversation and scrub the words away. An unsettling chill surrounded him. It was weird. It was creepy. It was...sexy?
Chris then proceeded to dunk his head under the sink and run cold water over him as well.
   They stopped talking after that.
Chris got into writing. Finished high school and began making his living.
   Then the asylum.
   Then the Shadow.
   Then the Ministry.
Chris went through so much hell. Of course it had its positives. There was Trilby and kicking demon ass. A good use of his psychotic tendencies. Making the world safe from the Shadow and keeping magic a secret. The people around the Ministry weren’t too bad. Yarrow was a bit...boring. But Jim was fun to mess with. And Claire was fun. There was always something to do, even if that something normally made Trilby roll his eyes.
Then one day, well… It was bound to happen.
Trilby was going to be out of action for a while. A mix up with a vampire left him incapable of going on assignments with Chris. But anyone who ever called Chris a “loose cannon” would recommend that he got someone to tag along in place of Trilby. Someone responsible and level-headed.
Well who better than the absent-minded psychic he was pounding in the off hours?
Yeah they were knocking boots. Nothing to get too attached over. It’s not like Chris got to know her life story or anything. Just letting off a bit of steam whenever they could hook up. All he knew was that she was very very much a psychic. Something he found interesting and she found best kept swept under the rug, much to his own disappointment.
At first she seemed hesitant to go on a mission with him, but after some convincing, and a lot of unusual head shaking and slicing motions from Trilby behind her, she finally agreed.
It was a simple mission. Done and over in a day. Of course it was the traveling that took the longest. It was on the farthest end of Ireland, naturally. It had some cultists and brainwashing and something to do with summoning a pagan deity. Claire was a natural and it was actually kind of fun getting to do work stuff with her.
They were traveling back and Claire was already writing up their required report on a notepad. Chris couldn’t help but notice the way she gnawed on a pencil as she tried to focus. The way her fingers drummed through the air like she was at the computer back at HQ, if not fiddling with her large, round glasses. The way the air around her became still and focused as she accidentally projected her feelings about them. Chris could practically hear the gears grinding away in her brain as she tried to recall every needed detail.
He chuckled to himself and it instantly snapped the tension in the air as her brain derailed.
“What? What’s funny?” she asked, looking up.
“Nothing. Just.. I dunno.” he shrugged. “You’re so focused.”
“Well… I mean..” she shrugged as well. “It gets kinda hard to report faithfully.”
“Eh those pricks in the higher-ups always find flaws in our reports. No matter what.” Chris rolled his eyes.
“Hm. True.” Claire sighed. “But it’s not just them. You go looking through so many different minds, so many different vibes and lives it’s kinda easy to forget what’s happening in the real world. You know?”
“Well.. No. I wouldn’t.” Chris glanced back at her.
“Oh.. yeah, I guess you wouldn’t.”
   Chris chuckled again.
“Hey by the way, you were pretty great back there.”
“Hmm.. I wouldn’t say that.” Claire shrugged.
“You kidding me? The way you fucked with that one-”
“Ummm.” Claire interrupted and Chris noticed she looked horribly uncomfortable as she fidgeted with her glasses more. “If.. If it’s all the same Chris.. Can we not talk about...that?”
“Oh.. Right. Sorry. Forget that makes you uneasy.”
“Just…something drilled into me, I guess.”
There was a moment of silence. Then Chris spoke up.
   “Hey um.. Can I...ask something?”
“If you wanna know if I can predict the future, the answer is no.” Claire rolled her eyes.
“Damn.” Chris clicked his tongue in disappointment. “....Did you always hate your powers?”
“Mm..” Claire was quiet for a moment before she shrugged and looked out the window of the car. “What was there to like?”
“Um, cause it’s fucking psychic powers.”
“Yeah, exactly.” she sighed. “They always got me in trouble.. It.. Creeps a lot of people out.”
“Come on. It couldn’t have always been that bad-”
“No. It was.” Claire growled, her voice taking on a tone akin to earlier that day, but somehow lacking the same venom behind it. “It was always that bad. It was awful. You’ve no idea.”
   “...Well… Like what?”
“....Like earlier.” Claire shrugged. “But.. By accident. I would...hurt them.. And scare them.”
Chris frowned. Claire was normally so bubbly, happy, a bit forgetful, but chipper despite the depressing and horrific nightmare that their livelihood was. He hated seeing her this downtrodden. It was wrong. Like on a fundamental scale, this was just wrong.
“...Did.. Something traumatic happen?” he asked. “Something that made you hate it so much?”
Claire gave a dry chuckle before replying. “I wouldn’t say...traumatic but.. Well.. It did drive a wedge between me and some really important people.”
   “Was there a guy?”
   “....Yeah…”
Chris felt something grip him. A sudden kind of deep-rooted anger. The kind akin to staring down a vampire or some other unholy abomination. Not counting Trilby, of course.
   “Who-”
“Should get some gas. Before the ferry.”
Chris sighed but found a station and pulled over. Clearly she didn’t wanna keep talking. While he was filling up, she went inside to use the bathroom.
“Look over the report. Jot down anything I missed, got it?”
   “Yeah..”
Chris felt crummy and stupid and angry. Claire was a great person! Why would anyone hate her for having psychic powers? Okay yeah so she kind of really mentally fucked with that one guy. And yeah okay so maybe she kinda caused another to have an aneurysm. Yeah sure that might’ve been a more common problem when she was a kid and yeah it might’ve been like Stephen King’s Fury, but so?
And it’s not like Chris would’ve hurt this guy…. Much.
He growled and kicked a tire before getting back in the car. He sighed and leaned against the wheel, waiting for Claire to return. That was when he noticed Claire’s notepad left laying on the space between their seats. Oh right.. Reporting.
Chris sighed and grabbed it. He looked over the notes. Everything seemed in order. She left off at the part where cultists were about to start sacrificing the local children but she’ll likely finish jotting down the basic plot when they got back. Chris grabbed the ballpoint pen she had been using and was about to go back and fix her grammar when something caught his eye.
A small doodle Claire had in the corner. It was a cat.
Chris squinted and looked it over carefully. It looked familiar.
Suddenly it dawned on him. He had seen this before.
Chris’ mind started racing, putting all the pieces together. But.. But how could he prove it? And how could he prove it without worrying Claire?
Chris then looked back at the pen in his hand and had a perfect idea.
Meanwhile Claire was hiding in the bathroom. She knew this was a bad idea. She knew this was gonna be horrible! She knew this was gonna happen and she just had to keep playing with fire, didn’t she??
“Stupid stupid stupid!” Claire banged her head on the wall. “Listen! To your! Intuition!!”
Of course she knew who he was. Ever since the first day Trilby introduced him at the STP.
Claire and Trilby were discussing the differences in using iodized salt compared to sea salt, though ultimately, they both knew pink Himalayan was best. But then Claire felt it. A familiar presence.
She suddenly felt an oncoming wave of giddy excitement that made her almost tremble. And a familiar warmth that quickly wrapped around her like a towel fresh out of the dryer.
   “Claire? You okay?”
   “Think someone’s-”
“Trilby! We gotta go do a thing with cake- Oh. Hey.” Chris had rounded the door to Trilby’s cubicle but stopped short seeing Claire.
   “Hey.” Claire waved.
“First of all, never again. Secondly, I never introduced you two, have I? Chris, meet Claire. Claire-”
But she already knew who he was. But a deep anxiety prevented her from saying anything. But after getting to meet him, within all of five minutes she forgot entirely, simply living in the moment. And then she forgot again when they agreed to meet up after work. And she kept forgetting to a point it would’ve felt awkward to start saying anything then and gosh dammit.
‘Claire, why do you do this to yourself??’ she sighed and stepped out of the bathroom. ‘Always have to make everything awkward and weird…youfreak Can’t just remember to freaking speak up and say what’s on your mind?’
Claire only hoped Chris would drop the subject and they could return to their normal status quo. At least she got to see him. At least they got to talk face to face. It was better than what most people could hope for. After all, some people never find their soulmates.
‘But they write every day.’  her unhelpful thoughts reminded her as she returned to the car. ‘When was the last time we wrote to each other?’
She opened the car door and-
   “I KNEW IT!!!”
    “Aah!”
Claire stumbled back, tripped on her heels and fell backwards onto the pavement.
“What the hell, Chris?!” Claire scolded as she picked herself up.
“Take a look in the mirror!”
She got up and looked at her reflection in the window. She gasped, seeing a rather crude doodle of a cat across her cheek. She looked through the window only to find Chris with a matching mark and a wide grin stretching from ear to ear.
“Why the hell didn’t you tell me?!” he asked.
Claire stammered, laughed, and ended up crying. Her heart was pounding, she felt scared and worried. Chris’ smile disappeared and he got out of the car and came around to her.
“Hey.. Hey hey hey. Hang on now.” he came over and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “What? What is it?”
“I thought you’d hate me.” Claire managed to get out with a hiccup.
   “I know.. I’m sorry.. I didn’t hate you. I never did! I just.. You…”
“Scared you.. Like.. I scare everyone.” she sniffled.
   “No! You didn’t scare me! I just.. I.. I dunno.” Chris shrugged. “I was a dumb teenager. I didn’t know what I was feeling.. I’m sorry.. I’m so sorry…”
Claire simply shook her head. Chris ran a hand through his hair and thought for a moment.
“...If it’ll make you feel better I could still kick my ass.”
Claire laughed. She choked and then giggled some more and finally started wiping away her tears.
   “Please don’t.”
Chris smiled and hugged her tight. She weakly hugged him back.
   “I’m sorry.”
   “I know..”
After that, they began writing to each other more and more often. Little notes, here and there.
“That was a lot of fun last night.”
 “There’s coffee in the breakroom.”
“Fought a ghost. It was gross.”
 “Kissed one the other day.”
“I’m stealing the last slice of cake. Don’t tell Trilby.”
It was nice. It was fun. It was one thing that Claire would say was normal about their lives.
“You wanna do something else after work tonight?”
“I got a new cat figurine!”
“Got to see the sunset while on the job. Reminded me of..”
“Hey you’ve been quiet. You okay?”
 “Can I tell you something?”
   “I love you.”

hm... might as well write another one of these. might make me sleepy enough to go to bed.
why yes, these were a stand in for socializing how did you guess.
I am fully ingrained in my FC now, it’s been a while. We finally reached 40 members, and Meri offered me a role as an officer then and there since we were in a call together. I... half expected it, to be honest. I’ve done my best to be helpful and friendly because I crave gratification and need people to like me or I’ll explode. Also of course because I genuinely like these people and would like to confidently be able to call them my friends. Through them I was finally able to overcome my lingering fear of voice chat, wrapping up that little bit of middle school trauma. I don’t feel so much social anxiety after spending time with them, either. It’s nice.
Ah, but back to being an officer. I suppose there weren’t many other options there, few of us are all that far into the end game. Lucky I think Meri made an offer to but he refused, but that little exchange is muddled in my memory. he got his own unique crafting themed position, anyhow. Oh right, we also got our fc house recently, and today they started on building up stuff.
I do feel... kinda bad about this, getting in with people, on sort of a weird level. I’m generally poor company, being a 19 year old anxiety and depression riddled shut in no-lifer. I’ve gotten more comfortable hanging out in calls, though I still wish I could contribute to conversations more. That would require getting a life though. But I won’t go down that rabbit hole, this whole paragraph has been personal and uncomfortable enough. Oh, I will note that my stutter is not helping matters. Being in a call and not talking in person gives me more time to think about my words, and that’s when they refuse to come out. At least Di’s a kindred spirit in that regard, dude stutters like crazy when he gets excited talking about something.
Case in point, I had explained to me some of the unsavory things that have happened behind the scenes. Nothing too serious, but still a bit surprising nonetheless. I guess Di wanted to clear the air about some of the stuff in the moderation channel in case I went snooping myself. Hm... I guess it doesn’t bare repeating here, actually. Just some uncomfortable things, and things that no longer matter but tell me something about some previous members that’re kinda funny imo? Like their behavior was a problem, as is what became of them, but some of what I was told was genuinely humorous to me for some reason. Ah but the actual case in point is that Di drew that explanation out way more than it needed to, stuttering the whole while. I kept trying to tell him that I understood but he got so worked up about it! Not that it was bad or anything, dude’s just passionately opinionated, there’s just a dumb sort of solidarity of hearing someone else struggle with a stutter.
Oh, I guess I should also mention that I’ve uhhhhhhh kinda forgotten about whatever narrative I had before. That was more of a way to pass time and keep myself sane as I burned through the game but now I have people to talk to and activities to do with them, much more fun. Doran is increasingly just my avatar, which is fine. Still love the WoL in this game, no matter who they are. He does continue to be a cutie though and I summarily will continue to smoosh him together with half the game’s cast in my head.
I think I’m sufficiently tired by this point. Actually getting involved has had the curious side effect of making me want to go to sleep earlier, so I can try and play when the most people are actually on.

You didn't like sun and moon?
There were things I did like about the game, such as some of the new Pokémon and the removal of HMs, but there are so many problems I have with the game, and when you look more into it… it’s almost comparable to Sonic 06 in some aspects.
Everyone’s gonna grab their torch and pitchforks, but it’s kinda true. They focused so much on the story, and rushed the game for not only for an anniversary release, but a Christmas one too. Even the kid who gave it to me (yes, it was given to me) said he thought it was boring compared to the previous titles.
Eh, might as well go on, and point out the things that are wrong in terms of programming, and writing…
Unfinished content. There are several unused assets in Sun/Moon, more than there were in Gen 2 and 3. There’s this golf course for one. Supposedly, /vp/ went into the code and found a ton of unused stuff. The player’s house was originally way bigger than it is in the game with a garage and other rooms. Fully modeled Pokémon that follow you are still in the game data. There’s also a bunch of unused caves, allegedly.
There’s a few buildings that you just… can’t enter, for whatever reason. The lighthouse, and the one building in Malie Garden. It’s kind of frustrating since there is a door there, but you can’t do anything with them. It doesn’t even give you the satisfaction of a “it’s locked” like past games did.
There’s quite a bit of lag in this game, even with the new 3DS. Supposedly, once again at /vp/, an anon went into the code and found out that the programming behind battles in SM constantly re-rendered the models over and over, which slows the game down tremendously. Why they did this? I have no clue.
The AI for some of the trainers happen to be extremely pathetic, especially the Elite Four. This isn’t even a case of the EXP Share being overpowered, the AI is just as stupid as it was in gen 1.
I might as well nitpick the Elite Four while I’m at it. Two of them you already fought, one you have met, and one is from the aforementioned unused golf area most likely. They couldn’t bother to come up with new people to insert, or use exclusively the ones you didn’t battle.
You may notice that the National Dex is not in the game at all. So when you get a Pokémon not in the dex, like say, Inkay, it will not show up. No entry, nothing. Your save file will never read more than "302" Pokemon even if you have all 802 of them.
On that note, a lot of the returning Pokémon are from gen 1. There’s only a couple of Pokémon from gens 2-6. Pandering much? Especially with that Nugget Bridge callback, even though the Nugget Bridge in my opinion, was one of the worst parts of gen 1.
Unlike most people, I love when new Pokémon are introduced, and I get really upset when they become practically hidden in comparison to the flood of Kanto Pokémon plus Alola forms. Seriously, it took far too long to find a Salandit, Rockruff I never ran into at all, Dhelmise I only saw in the Elite Four, and Dewpider? Didn’t even know it was in the game. Gen 2 had this problem as well, but that was years ago, and they should have learned.
Nitpicking again, but Alola forms… yeah, not a fan of them. I was okay with the Mega Evos, particularly when they were given to underpowered Pokémon. Geodude and Grimer didn’t need these things at all. Bellossom though, one of the few Pokémon that would work well in Alola? Maybe as a Fire/Grass type..? Uhhh, nope, it’s gen 2, not our precious gen 1!
The Zygarde stuff feels like it was leftover from the next part of gen 6, but rather than making “Z” like everyone initially expected, in hopes of fixing past problems X/Y did. Instead though, GameFreak came with Sun/Moon, and rushed it for the 20th anniversary.
And the Battle Tree. God, I remember everyone gushing over Red and Blue returning, but… they were literally just there, for another recycled Battle Maison thing. You think GameFreak would have learned from the backlash against ORAS for removing the Battle Frontier, but nope. It’s literally barebones fan-service.
Soooo… what of the story? Well, in the game is kind of a mess, then maybe the story is better? What about the characters?
And by characters, I mean just Lillie. Lillie is the only character that gets any development, that becomes likable-- heck, I’ve seen some people say they wish she was the protagonist instead of the blank-faced player avatar, because they absolutely hate the player avatar for standing there.
I would have liked Lillie even more, if she went from disliking fighting, to deciding to break through and actually try it herself, becoming a rival. She doesn’t though, so…
Hau doesn’t do anything for his character. He’s nice, but he’s no Bianca, who became a professor at least. Gladion is an edgelord who helped Team Skull (even though they were helping his awful mom anyway so.. did he even know about this?) who just suddenly turns around at the climax.
Guzma… well, there’s nothing negative to say about him, but I just… don’t understand him. Why is he helping the Aether Foundation? Was there something I missed? He’s funny, and I liked having a less serious antagonist after how tryhard Lysandre was, but then that ends up being ruined with Lusamine.
Lusamine, god, where do I begin? She is easily worse than Lysandre in terms of Pokémon antagonists. She lost her husband (who is on that island with the Pokébeans by the way, so he isn’t dead or anything to begin with) and just ends up being cold to her children, focusing only on the Ultra Beasts.
This would be okay, if she was maybe… actually depressed, and not absolutely psychotic for no reason, wanting to fuse herself with Nihilego and freezing Pokémon. And you’re supposed to feel sorry for her and Lillie, I’m sorry, what? No, I’m not forgiving her. These are explanations, but not excuses.
Cyrus wasn’t forgiven, even though out of all the antagonists, I find him to be the most sympathetic. Ghetsis certainly isn’t being forgiven, and for good reasons, he closed his son off from the rest of the world and used him for his own goals.
The game can’t figure out if they want Lusamine to be absolutely awful, or “no she’s not so bad, she just had it rough!” It ends up feeling like a bad fan-fic, and I honestly wished Lusamine kicked the bucket after you fought her, because that would have actually been a nice change for a Pokémon game.
When she fuses herself with Nihilego, nearly everyone would expect you to fight her, as the Nihilego… but no, she just sends out her usual Pokémon from before, and she’s pathetically easy. Why was it so hard to fight her, but with Nihilego’s moveset?
Lusamine is easily the worst character and the worst antagonist in a Pokémon game, ever. The entire Aether Foundation has little build-up too, you can figure out they’re the bad guys right from the opening cutscene. At least Cipher from the GameCube games had thought into their bigbads, y’know.
Finally, we have the Ultra Beasts. I was thinking this would be a game where you have to catch the legendaries, and use them against all the Ultra Beasts to chase them out, like how we saw Tapu Koko going against Buzzwole, but no. It’s only Lusamine fusing with Nihilego. You only have a proper fight against the Ultra Beasts in a ridiculous post-game sidequest that’s more annoying than fun.
Whew… okay, I think that’s it. Yeah. Sorry for the long-winded rant, but I’ve been wanting to get that off my chest for a while. Yeah, I just didn’t have much fun with the game, and could tell it was rushed out. I disliked it even more when I learned of all the unused content, and thought more about the story.
If you liked Sun/Moon, that’s fine, I’m honestly hoping Ultra fixes all the mistakes this game made, but… I kinda doubt that, GameFreak’s jump to 3D was kinda rocky. Doesn’t help when people hype these games for a couple of months, then completely drop and forget about them.
If I want a Pokémon game with more story, I think I’ll stick to Black/White, the GameCube games, and Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, thank you.
I’ve said it before to friends but… y’know, it’s kinda sad when Pokémon Clover, an unfinished and very crude hack by 4chan, is far more polished than Sun/Moon is. (Heck, rather than removing the TMs, they buffed them, especially Cut!)
