Cosmere Characters: Would They Be Good at Pulling Pranks?

Yesterday was April 1, aka April Fools Day, a holiday that encourages people to pull pranks. So that got me wondering: if such a holiday existed in the Cosmere, would various Cosmere characters be good at this whole "pranking" thing?

1. Syl: Yes, but only of one type

Syl is a prankster in canon: she likes to stick things together! Your shoes to your floor, your hand to your spear, your butt to your chair...so yes, she is great at pranks. I bet if April Fool's Day existed in the Cosmere, she would be an absolute menace.

2. Lopen: Depends on who you ask...

I think Lopen's pranks would be like his jokes: not intended to be mean, but actually kinda mean. In Dawnshard, Lopen came to learn that his jokes were not universally fun and beloved, and I feel like his journey with pranks would necessarily be similar. He'd love pulling them, though!

3. Wayne: Yes, and everyone has fun

Sanderson once said that the difference between Lopen & Wayne is that Wayne can read the room. So I think Wayne would not only like pranks, but would also be more aware of their effect. Like...if Lopen is tying your shoelaces together when you're late for work, Wayne is putting googly eyes (which he invented) on all of your family photos while you're out.

4. Sarene: Yes (mostly against Iadon)

Sarene, Miss Malicious-compliance-and-weaponizer-of-other-people's-misogyny, would love an excuse to "accidentally" prank Iadon. She'd either do really obvious pranks and blame them on feminine confusion ("Oh dear I just wanted to clean but I guess washing your portrait ruined it??") or do really sneaky pranks that no one could trace back to her (cut to Sarene secretly weakening the seams on all of Iadon's clothing so that a good sneeze will make them all fall off).

5. Kaladin: Not anymore

We know that in canon Kaladin pulled pranks as a kid--he told Tien to save a lurg to dump in their dad's bath later. But I feel like nowadays, Kaladin is too gloomy and glowering to pull pranks. He might just enjoy Syl's sometimes though...

6. Steris: Maybe they're just not the most creative...

I think that if a Pranking Holiday existed, Steris would study up and do a textbook prank. Like, she's replacing Wax's sugar bowl with salt, and then he drinks a sip of salty coffee, and then she says, "Ah ha! You have been Pranked per the Social Conventions of today's Holiday!" And Wax would be genuinely delighted.

7. Dalinar: No--not at any point in his life

Blackthorn Dalinar would think a prank is "stabbing a guy in the leg and laughing." Modern-day Dalinar would be puzzled that anyone actually does pranks--aren't they, you know, kinda beneath you? The Codes would DEFINITELY not allow them.

8. Sigzil: No, too much paperwork

The Prank Authorization Form is 7 pages and takes 5 weeks for review and approval. Who has that kind of time???

9. Lift: Yes, absolutely

I can see Lift positioning buckets of water over, like, Dalinar's door or slicking the floor right as that merchant she saw yelling at kids walks by. Now--imagine Lift & Syl going on a prank spree together. You're welcome.

10. Hoid: Nobody knows

Hoid put paperclips in the pockets of every single one of Elhokar's outfits. He put edible glitter into Rock's stew, turning it into Glitter Stew. He found one of Kaladin's buttons on the ground and straight-up ate it while making direct eye contact.

But...were any of those things pranks? Were they plots? Were they just Hoid being Wit?

Nobody knows.

Here’s why Jasnah and Hoid is a great ship:

It’s not a ship.

It’s a stopgap.

I think Jasnah and Hoid do, on a personal level, enjoy each other. I do not think Brandon is writing them to last, and that’s intentional.

Jasnah finds Hoid to be an intellectual equal—“after all this time” implying she has never encountered someone who could be on her level before. She finds him “fascinating”. She needs his knowledge to save her planet and people. She doesn’t trust him. The text says this directly.

Additionally, they’ve been ‘together’ for what can’t be more than a few months. I don’t remember how long between Oathbringer and ROW, but it’s not long. People don’t fall in love that fast, and both Jasnah and Wit are too smart and risk-averse to let themselves do such a thing. They are not in love. They are doing a very strange form of dating, on top of which they are facing down Odium. No walks in the menagerie for them, just a constant barrage of stressors on all sides. They are under a great level of stress and not doing anything remotely close to courting or dating, physical affection from Hoid aside. Jasnah doesn’t even call him Hoid, so it’s unclear if he’s divulged that name to her despite telling Dalinar and Kaladin, who forgot or refuse to use it. The text is clear that he has told her some things about himself, like not being Alethi, using some power of physical transformation, and being immortal, but she’s stymied on anything else. I don’t think she’s the sort of woman who would insist on calling him Wit in private if she knew a more personal name, but I could be wrong.

So: Jasnah needs Hoid as an ally, needs his vast knowledge of all things Odium/Rayse, and perhaps fancies him as a future partner (“curious how the relationship would develop”). She doesn’t seem to be betting on Hoid 4 Life, but is enjoying the comfort it provides in the moment.

What does Hoid get from this?

First, he gets his dick wet. Jasnah’s canonically very beautiful. The benefit there is obvious.

Secondly, he gets to influence her decisions. He is shifting the boulder to roll in the direction he wants. Hoid is after something, and we don’t know what it is. I do genuinely believe he wants Odium contained—having a God roaming around the universe who wants Hoid specifically to die would doubtlessly be a big ol’ wrench in whatever his plans are. Hoid can do his work much more effectively at Jasnah’s side than on his own. He gets into the Big Important Meetings and knows all of the Plans being made. He gets to cast his vote. Jasnah takes his opinions into consideration.

They are both deriving an immense benefit from their relationship. Don’t let the sex fool you into thinking it makes what they have deeper than it is—as an ace person, I believe Jasnah sees sex as a necessary compromise in maintaining the relationship (“she could provide the intimacy he desired….this was not a new experience for her”). This is unsurprising. Sex is a small price to pay for, uh, saving the planet from an enemy you only recently learned exists and also happens to be the god of hate incarnate.

Brandon has said of the pairing "Wow, that's a really great and a really terrible match all at the same time, and that's what I'm looking for, in a lot of ways.”

Great match for intellectual brains and snark. Terrible match because something is being set up under the pretense of what we are assuming is a sloppy last-minute ship randomly set up in the second half of ROW.

There’s a WOB about how Jasnah and Hoid perceive power—I cannot find it, so here’s the paraphrase I’m drawing on:

“we should be concerned about how both Hoid and Jasnah view power and that’s what drew them together”.

Jasnah and Hoid are creatures of philosophy. Jasnah values the masses over the individual and Hoid values the individual over the masses (“[he] is legitimately empathetic to the individual”; telling Dalinar he would watch Roshar burn to get what he wants while devoting time and risk to helping various characters through rough spots). This is where their attraction to power and how they subsequently use it will put them at odds. They do not have the same goal, though they don’t know it—or perhaps Hoid does already, but is playing the game. Jasnah wants to save Roshar. Hoid wants to save Roshar, but more importantly, as he’s said, he wants to save his own interests.

Jasnah is brilliant, but I do think Hoid is conniving enough to manipulate her. “Yes, he did seem genuinely fond of her. He said it had taken him by surprise as much as it had her” (ROW 99)—this does not mean romantic relationship. It could. It could also mean a general fondness, like a dear friend. We have not seen Hoid or Jasnah exactly palling around with anybody on their own. We don’t know if they’re awash in good judies. They are two very smart people burdened with difficult tasks. Jasnah didn’t like Wit when we first saw them interact. Now they get along and playfully banter. That’s some unexpected fondness for sure. Trauma bonding, baby! It’s a hell of a drug!

Jasnah and Hoid are not fated to be together. They’re not supposed to be convincingly in love, because they aren’t. They are together purely by circumstance and their time is largely consumed with trying to stop Odium or Jasnah picking Hoid’s brain for her scholarly pursuits. Their relationship is, for now, enabling them to tackle the task in front of them. They are together for now, to save Roshar for now. After the battle of champions in SA5, it’s anyone’s guess—mine is that Jasnah will use what she’s learned against him somehow, and he will oppose her directly in pursuit of his own unnamed goal.

There will come a day where they realize the next obstacle they face is each other. They are locked in an embrace with knives in their hands.

TL;DR: Jasnah and Hoid are not in love and it’s okay if you don’t think they’re a good match, because they aren’t, and Brandon has said as much. Their relationship is setting up a mighty, mighty plot point in the back half of Stormlight.

In Warbreaker, Vasher starts off with around 50 Breaths, which he considers low while acknowledging that many people would not. Most Returned have the equivalent of 2000. This is enough to be worshiped as gods.

In retrospect it makes perfect sense that they already know about the Shattering. They fled Threnody, which is only Like That because of the Odium/Ambition/Mercy fight that killed Uli Da and Splintered Ambition. Those three only existed as Shards because they had already killed Adonalsium.

Also I hadn't realized or had forgotten that Shades are a "being from Threnody" thing, rather than a "dying on Threnody" thing

Fascinating that Auxiliary's corpse can still change forms even when his consciousness is completely gone. That implies that Maya and the others did something on purpose to lock themselves into sword form, rather than it being a direct consequence of the spen dying.

Also don't think I didn't notice Sanderson deliberately dancing around exactly what Sigzil's oaths were. He was Fourth Ideal in two different Orders and everything past Second is personalized

I was laughing at the Cinder King for thinking that you could just conquer all of Roshar (it's so big), and then I remembered the Voidbringer reveal in... I think Words of Radiance? And just started laughing harder. They literally did conquer the entire planet, other than the Shattered Plains and a few other remote areas. That canonically happened

Tress of the Emerald Sea

Description: The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

This was released on the 1st of the month to kick off the "Year of Sanderson" and I spent the entire day yesterday binge reading it and loving everything about it. He also worked with Howard Lyon, an artist, who detailed illustrations to be added throughout the novel that were all AMAZING and increased the reading experience! I want some of these as giant art prints because they are gorgeous! (I'll be including them below!)

I read the book in a day and loved it. It had good deaf rep for a side character, a fun and interesting magic system and incredible new world and planet to explore in the cosmere. A world that seemed as beautiful as it is deadly. The 12 different moons, with 12 different seas made of different spores that do a variety of dangerous things that could kill you, but be so useful if used properly when they get wet. It was really cool to read about and to read about how well Tress handled herself as she learned! Sandersons magic systems are such a strong point for his novels. I loved the playful silliness of the prose. I was surprised in the best way that the story is actually told and narrated by Hoid, a beloved cosmere character, as if it's a lengthier verison of the stories he tells in the Stormlight Archive. He breaks the fourth wall, engages playfully and the humor hits for me. The romance was sweet, not overtly intense or even the best relationship he has written, but it was cute. I enjoyed Tress as an MC and following her adventures and accidental Voyage into piracy as she heads out to rescue her love was amazing. The crew was great and I love a good pirate novel! And Piracy on an Ocean that had no water and was magical was super cool! The cosmere Easter eggs were amazing to find. Like Ulaam the Kandra, Riina from the Ire, and Hoid, of course, played a much bigger role as the stories narrator. I saw references to Mistborn, to Warbreaker and to Stormlight here. But while there were references, it is possible to read this book without reading anything else and holds itself up as a really great cozy lighthearted fantasy standalone read without spoiling any other books. Which is great!

Honestly, a great book to start off my 2023 reading time with and while I don't normally post my reviews here, I wanted to share this one and I wanted to share all the stunning art too! Because WOW! I ultimately ended up giving this book 4 stars out of 5. I can't wait for the merch box that comes with it to get here this month and see what's included as well as get to have this in hardcover!

Stunning art. Truly. Will be spending some time on 17th shard exploring all the possible intricacies I missed my first time reading and hearing what everyone else was thinking of it and any other possible cosmere connections!

Cosmere - Pirates - World building

⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)

A book brilliantly narrated, with amazing world building, and characters so easy to fall in love with. Brandon Sanderson will never fail me when i want a GOOD fantasy read that has literally everything. Dragons, a complicated magic system, a talking rat, a brilliant planet design, immortal characters, scientific advancements, LAPTOPS that actually fit the narrative of a fantasy book... I could go on forever.

Tress, is a sixteen year old window-washer girl whose life revolves around a rock (island) surrounded by seas made of spores ready to kill at the slightest hint of water. She sets sail to rescue the man she loves after a ploy by his father that sent him into the domain of the Sorceress to be kidnapped for ransom. Her growth was one of the most wonderful things about this book, because we could actually witness her change thought by thought. It was surreal to read, especially as a person whose been through a very similar development in my life.

Then we have Hoid, the narrator whom i never knew i needed before. I don't know how i'm gonna enjoy reading other books without his detailed absurd metaphors every few sentences. I think he can become one of my favorite characters of the cosmere once i actually dive deeper into this world's lore.

Additionally, we got the most amazing bunch of sailors that got me invested in every bit of their interactions. I will not go into detail here because I'm trying to post less spoilery reviews. Butttt i can happily say that i got my GRAY PIRATE, and i loved every second of it.

I mean, i know i don't have to pitch it to cosmere fans, but the amount of referencing to other stories was amazingly done that i squealed at each one i recognised and the ones i didn't did not affect my understanding of the book.

All in all, an amazing book that i would definitely recommend to all fantasy lovers.

Okay I desperately want to hear any and all Marsh headcanons you have, either for future stuff in era 3 or 4 (or even Lost Metal), or stuff that we didn’t get to see with him in era 1

i have very few marsh headcanons in comparison to the hours ive spent wailing about his lack of screen time in era 2. i cant wait to see him become a major player again, whether thats in era 3 or 4....i thought sanderson said he'd be in heavy focus in space age mistborn but i might be misremembering? either way that's the picture of future marsh i have in my head, i see him in the stars with incomprehensible space age fashion being a complete bitch to hoid on his dead brother's behalf.

you know im not sure if current era 2 marsh even knows about kelsier and the ghostbloods. like i dont know how deep he is in the southern continent rn. i really would like them to meet up again just because theyve literally not spoken since final empire lmao. the two of them do these huge gestures (marsh at the end of final empire, kelsier at the end of secret history) that really show how much they loved/understood each other but also theyre not friends and they dont talk. brothers who become cultural symbols of life and death on the same weekend and dont talk about it

Cosmere Characters: Should They Be At The Club?

As I think I've mentioned, I write these lists a couple months in advance, usually. So I don't know if the great "They should be at the club!" meme is still going strong, or if people will see this and be all, "Bah! That's SO 2023!" But eh.

So anyway, should Cosmere characters be at the club?

1. Dalinar

Dalinar should not be at the club. Dalinar would not understand the club, and he would not like the club.

2. Sadeas

Weirdly, I think Sadeas would understand the club better than Dalinar would, but he still should not be there. Sadeas's presence would make the club worse, no matter how fashionable he is.

3. Tress

Tress was only eighteen! She should have been at the club, although the club would probably be less exciting than her life at sea.

4. MeLaan

MeLaann is only, uh, thousands of years old (I think) but she should ABSOLUTELY be at the club. She would love the club, and the club would love her too.

5. Rlain

Has Rlain ever NOT been having a tough time? He deserves a wild night at the club with Renarin, and I'm sticking with that.

6. Vivenna

Vivenna was only twenty-two when she was supposed to be sent to marry the god-king. Yes, she should have been at the club instead. She would hate it, though. She would hate it so much.

7. Painter

Painter should get to be at a club lurking in a corner, drinking vodka on the rocks because it sounds tough and wishing it didn't taste so much like rubbing alcohol.

8. Hoid

Hoid should not be at the club. He's very old and also, no one at the club would be able to hear what he was saying and that would make Hoid sad.

9. Demoux

Demoux was in his early twenties when Kelsier's rebellion was going on. He 100% should have been at the club instead. He's named after a friend of Brandon's and Brandon said he'd survive and "get a girl" apparently and those are both things that can happen at a club.

10. Lift

Lift should not be at the club. Isn't she like 13? That's too young for the club.

11. Kaladin

Kaladin should be at the club. Adolin will have to drag him there, though, and he will spend much of the time looking glowery.

12. Ulaam

Ulaam should not go to the club because drunk people cannot consent to giving up their body parts (even after death) and Ulaam knows that and it would make him sad to see all of those beautiful elbows or what-not and not even be able to ASK for them.

13. Sebarial

Sebarial should not be at the club--he should be home drinking with Palona. He would own clubs, though, if he could.

14. Hrathen

Hrathen should not be at the club. He would definitely kill the vibe.

15. Szeth

Szeth is like 35 years old. He should not be at the club. He should be wrapped in a warm blanket and placed somewhere quiet, peaceful.

16. Moash

Yes--at any point in the narrative you can look at what Moash is going through and say, "Would it be better for him to be at the club right now?" and the answer is always yes.

My favorite six Sigzil moments:

6. After the side carry, when he and Kal are standing there and trying to understand what's going on- and as much as they are both very smart and strategic, it takes them so long before they realize it because they just can't not value life and can't see this as anything other than senseless and horrible even if it had a logic to it

5. Trying to tell a story, very badly. He just wants to help Kal and tries to do what Hoid would but he is not good at it. It's ok kid your place is wiki articles not fables

4. How he was the only person to not try to hold Kal down when he was trying to sleepwalk into the Highstorm. Everyone is Bridge Four has to dogpile him and he said "yeah if you giant Alethi can't keep him down I'm sure not getting punched because I tried to stop him" and just watched.

3. "You have a leader's face" when he tried to translate a compliment from Azish. He was telling Kaladin that he's hot. He was trying to flirt. Kal just reacted so badly to the wording and bring compared to a lighteyes that he assumed the Alethi were homophobic for months after that until they cleared up the no gayperwork thing in book three

2. "I'm going to be the first into the sky" I'm???? Love him???? Please I need more content of him

1. The time in the first book where Moash and Kal are having their talk about how they're different as foils and Sigzil spells out that The Answer Is Intersectionality And Solidarity. Like he says the point for the whole book series right there but no nobody listened because Kal was too busy "oh you sweet summer child"ing Moash about the winning shards thing

Time for some more fic recs because its been awhile since I did them!

1. 幻想农场 (Fantasy Farm)

Author: 西子绪

Farming/slice of life, food fic, supernatural, mythology

Summary [taken from novel updates]:

After being fired, Lu Qingjiu finally decided to return to his hometown to farm.

At first, he started raising a pig, and then he found that the pig could solve more high-level math questions than he could.

After that, he started raising a flock of chickens, and then he found that his own fighting ability was one-tenth of that of a single chicken.

Finally, Lu Qingjiu finally realised that this old home wasn’t quite right… Especially a certain person by his side who constantly stared at him day in and day out.

Lu Qingjiu: “Are you drooling because of the spicy stir-fry I’m holding or because of me?”

Bai Yuehu pointed at the stir-fry.

Lu Qingjiu: “Then can you let go??”

Bai Yuehu reluctantly glanced at Lu Qingjiu’s arm, before loosening his teeth.

Comments:

My first thought is: don’t read this fic when you’re hungry. Every chapter is filled with delicious descriptions of food that’ll make one’s mouth water. The novel makes a lot of references to creatures from the Classics of the Mountains and Seas, which is a delight to learn about. An easy-to-read, fun novel.

However, something about these exams and the system controIIing it didn’t seem right — lt seemed to be trying to trap the examinees with ridiculous ruIes and strange questions…

There, You Huo meets lnvigiIator 001 who seems to hoId a key to the past he no Ionger remembered and, together, they go through the exam, unravelling the mysteries behind their past and the system.

Tldr: A pair of chaotic madmen work together to go against the examination system while feeding the readers dogfood.

Comments:

I admit that I didn’t like the story when I first started reading it. But as the story progresses, the rules of the examination fall into place and the different examinations got very challenging and interesting. The whole power couple and stranger-to-lover tropes are an added highlight.

The next day, a child's voice announced to the entire world: Ding dong! 15th November, 2017, the earth went online.

   The three iron rules of the towers:    (1) The towers shall explain everything.    (2) The game time starts from 6:00 - 18:00.    (3) All players please try their best to attack and defeat the towers.

Comments:

Another suspenseful infinite flow stories. I love the smart power couple dynamic, how the two of them become powerful when they collaborate, but are also equally capable of defeating the towers’ levels by themselves. Moreover, all the characters don’t have your typical “oh let me be a hero and save everyone” complex. They all weighed the benefits and costs at each turn and are capable of making decisions that best maximize their chances of survival - whether that is ruthlessly killing other players or extending a saving hand. All the powers and items that the players received and the world-building are very unique (especially Tang Mo’s and his book haha). This one is gonna challenge your brain a bit, but definitely worth a read.

A friendly tip, usually, through dedication and self-sacrifice, our employees slowly foster a sense of dependency in the scum gongs, gradually making it so the scum gongs can’t live without them.

Chi Xiaochi: How many regret points is a complete loss of reputation and standing worth? How about a fall from grace? Or wanting something but never being able to obtain it?

Comment:

Don’t let the title fool you. I entered the novel thinking it’s some meet-cute modern-day slice-of-life comedy, but it turns out to have some really good angst and adventure moments in there. Heck, it’s been awhile since I cried for a novel. :’) 

There are ten arcs (i.e. worlds) that the protagonist enters, each with its own backstory, so this novel might feel longer than the usual danmei. Nevertheless, I enjoyed all the details placed into each world and all the side characters. I also like that the protagonist is very smart and cunning and he grows throughout the different worlds. The only con I’ll say to this is that everything proceeds a bit too smoothly, especially with the golden finger of 061, so the protagonist can come off as being too OP. Nevertheless, the ending and last world are just huge tear-jerkers.

5. 迪奥先生 (Mr. Dior)

Comedy, fluff, romance 

Summary [from novel updates]:

One day, Zhang Chenfei met a car accident. Fortunately, he didn’t suffer any serious physical injuries. However, due to the impact of the car crash, his brain’s perception of the real world had turned into that of the novel that he was reading prior to the accident. The thing that horrified his wife, Jiao Qi, was… the Smart Brain, Louis XIII downloaded a series of books which meant that his husband would turn into a different character each time!

How will our adorable little wife deal with this kind of husband who seemed to suddenly suffer from multiple personalities?

This novel’s plot focuses on Zhang Chenfei’s changing personality based from the characters in the books, and how his wife, Jiao Qi, deal with every character as he will have to act in sync with whoever his husband’s character is. This is per the advise of the private doctor since treatment of this special condition was still under research.

As they act out their roles, they will gradually discover and learn more about the other, which they’ve never known in their seven years of living together.

Comment:

The amount of second-hand embarrassment and cringe I got from this novel is huge and I love it lol. If you are curious about how cheesy and cliche Chinese romance can get, please do try reading this. It includes some of the worst and most dog blood tropes in a comedic and satirical way, while advancing the main pairing’s relationship at the same time. Truly a fun read!

My Ranking of the Cosmere Novellas/Short Stories

(Going to try to avoid major spoilers for these works in case you haven’t gotten to them yet, but proceed at your own risk)

1) The Emperor’s Soul - An absolute 10/10.  Beautiful in every way.  A piece of art to rival Shai’s own work.  One of Branderson’s most unique protagonists.  Commentary about art and its relationship to its creator.  The dynamic between Shai and Gaotona *chef’s kiss*.  One of the few Sanderson works that acknowledges that good people in government does not benefit the people unless they’re willing to make systemic changes and pursue justice for everyone in their society.  Not surprised that this is the piece that finally got Branderson his Hugo award

2) Mistborn: Secret History - 9/10.  An automatic second place because of how critical it is to the greater Cosmere.  An in-text reference to Adonalsium? Check.  Confirmed worldhoppers from Threnody, Taldain, and Sel, with the bonus appearance of a fabrial? Check.  Kelsier’s tenderness towards Vin? Anime fight between Hoid and Kelsier?  Closure for some of our favs from Era 1?  Check, check, and check.  Not as beautifully crafted as the Emperor’s Soul, which is why I’m not giving it a 10, but a must-read for the Cosmere

3)  Dawnshard - 9/10.  Refreshingly different from the other Stormlight books. Representation of disabilities and bilingualism/experiences of immigrants.  Automatic two-stars for cat/larken mom, Rysn. Lopen’s little arc was also a punch in the gut, and so different from other character arcs in Sanderson’s books.  The Lore implications in this book are arguably almost as important as Secret History’s, but I’m placing it third because Sanderson kind of cheated with this novel-length “novella”.

4) Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell - 8/10.  A wild ride that I absolutely enjoyed.  Silence Montane is one of my favorite Cosmere women.  A mother willing to do anything for her children?  Down for murder?  Savvy, clever, and subtle in her craft?  This woman is everything to me.  Very different compared to the rest of the Cosmere, but not as unique when compared to the greater genre.  If someone chose this as their first Sanderson read, they wouldn’t get a good idea of his style or world building, but the implications to the Cosmere endgame are wild.  Ripe for fan theories

5) Sixth of the Dusk - 7/10.  I would die on Patji.  Actually, I wouldn’t even get to shore.  But I loved it still.  The recurring symbolism with the feather and individual arrogance?  The secret behind the Aviar? The relationship between the trappers and their love for their Aviar above all else?  The ending theme about how unchecked capitalism leads to exploitation?  A solid Sanderson read

6) Edgedancer - 6.5/10.  I like Lift as a character, but 50k words of her POV narration is a little tiring.  A full star for grumpy Wyndle and his usefulness in giving us good Lore. I liked getting to see parts of Roshar we hadn’t encountered yet, and seeing parts that often get left out of the royal POVs that make up the main series. A solid read but not particularly outstanding amongst Sanderson’s other short works

7) The Eleventh Metal  - 5/10.  Good backstory for Kelsier but didn’t have a ton of substance and wasn’t particularly memorable.  Didn’t dislike it, but wouldn’t go back to reread, whereas  the other works above add value with each reread

8) The Hope of Elantris - 4/10.  An underwhelming read that was alright, and just short enough that I didn’t get too annoyed with it.   It gets a star because Dashe is a legitimately good father and we know that the Cosmere could use every one of those that it can get.  An extra star because of the author’s note at the end of it and the kindness that compelled Branderson to even write this little piece.  If 13-year-old me knew that my favorite author made me the main character in one of his stories, I would have wept.  I’m sure real life Matisse was similarly moved

9) Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania - 1/10  I know he was writing this to feel like an old-timey western story but I couldn’t stand it.  A few paragraphs from the newspaper clippings in Era 2 were fun and refreshing, but a whole short story made me want to bang my head on the wall.  I skimmed through this purely for the Lore, and I really only got some information about how the Koloss are made, but not much more than you can glean yourself from reading the Mistborn novels and other shorts. Not really worth reading except for the street-cred of claiming you’ve read every Cosmere work

Ramblings about sharp ends (seriously it's pointless and incoherent): spoilers for everything up to there!!

A Beautiful Bastard:

-ngl I basically only read sharp ends bc I heard there was a glokta short story so imagine how glad I was that it was the first one

-absolutely love Salem's pov, originally I was really bitter about how everytime we get a cameo from an old character we never get their pov, but I also love it when abercombie develops his side characters

-screamed a little bit a what a fuckboy glokta was like omg im such a simp

-the move with the lady's handkerchief shshshshhs I'm sorry I'll stop

-the way glokta seems to treat west here really makes how they reunite even crazier, like damn I know in the first trilogy he's a torturer but he's really mellowed out

-tunny is the hoid of first law

-"who'll bring my personal effects back to mother" I wanna know what his relationship with his mom is like who is his dad what kind of family did he have?? What kind of woman is his mother please I need to know

-the utter sense of juicy doom mwah

-however I feel like I didn't learn or gain that much from this short story compared to the others so

-4/5 because I'm obsessed with glokta which clouds my judgment

Small Kindnesses:

-WHEN I SAY I FREAKED THE FUCK OUT WHEN SEVERARD SHOWED UP SJSJHSHS

-I FUCKING LOVED THAT KID BACK IN FIRST LAW MAN WHEN HE WAS MAKING HIS LITTLE INVESTMENTS AND TAKING CARE OF HIS LITTLE BIRDS!! I just wanted the best for him!!

-thought jabre was vitari at first but then realized that wouldn't make sense because severard

-carcolf and shev jshshshwhwb that's a relationship and a half

-nice set up but didn't care that much at this point about it so 3/5

-here was when I realized that the stories were chronological and that there would just be a whole bunch of stories I wanted out of sharp ends that I just won't get

-tbh craw was never my favorite pov in the heroes and I didn't feel like I learned anything new or special in this story

-i alternated between skimming and feeling bored

-but I love whirrun and wonderful so

-javre really is the baddest bitch in the circle of the world and this is when I was really hooked, but then the story ended! Damn you abercombie!

-a multitalented king!! Yes!!

-throughout red country I kept wanting temple to talk about his past and he did here

-brutal! Dagoska siege was my fave part of before they're hanged so! Yay!

-i also just have a thing for sieges in books, this is the impact of being obsessed with Shostakovich in middle school

-the way temple couldn't move when he thought he should have sacrificed himself for kahdia urGjjHhhgh

-i would say like he's come so far but he probably hasnt it's just that he's a lawyer in a small town now and doesn't need to worry about this

-loved learned about gorsts daddy issues I always feel like I get a bit too little of characters' parents in these books

-always did wonder what happened to the farms everyone just kills a bunch of people in

Three's a Crowd:

-this jappo kid is either gonna be insufferable in future books or my favorite ever

-shev and JAVRES FRIENDSHIP UGH (highkey relate to shev all my friends are javres) I felt like it was really realistic and well done and I'm a whore for a good friendship

-tunny is literally fucking hoid is yolk is the Yoru sulfur of uselessness

-the way this ends with carcolf I was like yessss but then the next story happens god I feel like carcolf and shev r one of the best first law romances tbh like they way they both have this pile of mistrust and lust and longing and like they can't be with each other but the only thing stopping them is themselves but URGH it's so good.

-holy moly it wasn't until this short story that the gravity of "the bloody nine is the scariest dude, super evil, etc" really sinks in??

-like I felt genuine horror when bethod walked into the dungeon at the end??

-such a different dynamic between logen and dogman ?

-bethod is interesting as hell like callback to that speech he gives logen about wanting peace in last argument of kings like this man was lucky to die as late as he did

-it feels like the bloody nine in red country is closer to this version of the bloody nine, like a more extreme version, than the bloody nine we get in the main trilogy

-that passage about logen killing sheep really sealed it for me im ok with people being killed but every time abercombie kills a sheep or a horse I cry a lil bit inside

-absolutely crazy I feel like I learned so much about logen and bethod and I felt genuine fear 6/5

5. samwise gamgee from LOTR

HE’S SO LOYAL TO HIS FRIENDS!!!!! i will always appreciate that in a character. i also love his perseverance, his caring nature, his courage. i love that he finds so much joy in the small things that made up his life in the shire, and that they — alongside his love for frodo — are what keeps him going most of all.

4. hoid from the stormlight archive (and also various other books because he’s a recurring character across several universes)

he’s such a smart-ass piece of shit and i’m always thrilled when he shows up because he’s just!! so fucking fun to read!! and beneath all the wit he’s sincere and caring which i’m always a sucker for

3. the tenth doctor from doctor who

i have a powerful fondness for him born both of the specific time i first encountered him — because he was a massive source of comfort and joy to me when i desperately needed it — and of the fact that he’s played by david tenant who i adore. as a character he’s like an endearing puppy, i just never stop smiling when he’s on screen

2. elend venture from mistborn

i would DIE FOR HIM. he’s a deeply good person who’s so charming to me, he’s clever and passionate and fiercely loyal, but he’s also put in a position where he needs to change if he wants to achieve his goals. and the way he changes, the difficult decisions he has to make in compromising some ideals to achieve others in light of a complex world, is both heartbreaking and inspiring to me. i think about his character arc and where it ends up all the time and i’m filled with awe

1. aziraphale and crowley from good omens who count as one pair of characters because i said so
