Hungey Larry is considered a standalone (with Spider with a Top Hat) and it is NOT canon. The only thing that bugs me is that the Diazes are celebrating Halloween but they should get the house ready for Dia de los Muertos, which is Nov. 2nd. They are part Mexican. My theory is that they both celebrate these holidays which means they clean up the house fast. Or when Rafael moved to America, he seemed to love Halloween for its art. (costumes/decorations). But the episode wasn't canon anyway. (1/2)

(2/2) The Diazes never forget the holiday. It was referenced in Blood Moon Ball and Marco’s Day of the Dead suit came from Rafael. It would seem odd for them to celebrate both holidays, but I think it was the writers’ intention to do a Halloween episode. And it was out of place. I just wish we can see them celebrating Dia de los Muertos as much as Halloween. Maybe. All in all, I just feel like I would like to see much of Rafael’s Mexican’s roots and even his family tree like Star’s.

Yes, these episodes stand alone and don’t have much impact on the rest of series, anon. But I see no reason to believe they’re not canon. Don’t know where you got that idea.

I agree that it would be nice to see the Diazes celebrating Dia de los Muertos, because they are, after all, Mexicans. But I don’t think it would be a good idea for a few reasons.

1. I only have a vague idea of what Dia de los Muertos actually is. I imagine most people who don’t have Mexican roots don’t know either. So it would be kind of confusing if they didn’t explain the holiday. And if they did explain the holiday, it would be boring. At least with Halloween, it is celebrated around the world.

2. It could very easily come across as racist. There are some films, TV shows, and other media that use race as a tool to promote some kind of agenda. I recently had to watch one such film in a Spanish class at my school. (Not going to name it for obvious reasons.) Now, it can be done well, and it can be done without any social commentary from the writers. But that is very difficult to pull off.

3. The Diazes are American. Yes, Rafael immigrated from Mexico. But he’s an American now and so is Marco. I don’t call myself a German just because my family is from Germany. I call myself an American because I live in America.

But even with all those reasons, I imagine that the Diazes do celebrate Dia de los Muertos. From personal experience, I know that the Germans in Milwaukee (where I grew up) took their culture with them, such as Oktoberfest, bratwurst and beer, Friday fish frys, etc. It’s just kind of a background thing these days. (Shameless plug: Summerfest starts this Wednesday in Milwaukee! It’s the world’s largest music festival and I’ll probably be there at some point! Also, it’s the 50th anniversary!)
